FAR RIGHT: From left, Stephen Gregson, Norman Tenray and Andrew Howarth RIGHT & BELOW: Stephen Gregson talks to delegates on the QES breakfast at Preston’s College

No need for businesses to panic despite slower growth A positive picture for Lancashire businesses was painted as the results of the latest Quarterly Economic Survey were revealed

S

tephen Gregson, of Moore and Smalley chartered accountants, gave an inspirational talk on the state of the county’s businesses following detailed responses to questions by companies across the county. The QES is compiled nationally by the British Chambers of Commerce and in Lancashire by the three Chambers, North and Western Lancashire, East Lancashire and Lancaster. Mr Gregson told the event at Preston’s College, attended by about 100 businessmen and women: ‘There has been a significant increase in the manufacturing sector in the recruitment of full-time jobs. This is one example of the ups and downs of the economy. We do not have to get too panicked about it. What comes with this is that we are getting a greater sense of predictability. We have a sense of what the risks are and we can do more planning for that. What it is suggesting with recruitment being down is a little bit of a cause for concern but maybe what we are seeing is that recruitment has gone down because there has been more invested in kit, and that is one way of getting worker productivity up.

could be because of confidence or there could just be a sense of people being fed up with doing nothing and wanting to just get on and try to do something.’ Mr Gregson’s talk was followed by a question and answer session with Andrew Howarth, managing director of The Promenade Group, which owns Bartle Hall near Preston and The Glendower Hotel in Lytham, and a networking session. NWL Chamber president Norman Tenray said: “While the figures are in a slight decline, I am actually really reassured because we can see a bit of continuity and a little bit of sustainability coming through. ‘The results over the past four years have shown that there is that consistency. Originally, for the first couple of years it was quite flat when we were really in deep recession but now we are coming out of recession we are starting to get some nice peaks and troughs, which is good because obviously if you go through a bit of growth you have got to consolidate and you have got to see those results come in and then you are going to invest. What I would urge any business out there to do is follow the QES, contribute to the QES and actually get along here and discuss the results with other businesses at this event because it is incredibly powerful. I use these results as one of the key indicators to help me make decisions within my business and I have found it incredibly accurate.’

He continued; ‘If anything signifies that people feel confident about the future it must be investment and recruitment. Investment has gone up. If you are thinking that the future might be better you might be thinking about going to the bank and asking for money for investment. Our experience is we are starting to get swamped with transactional work. We are getting more Lancashire Chamber of Commerce and more enquiries about buying and selling. Experience the great indoors Experience the British music festival experience without the threat of rain or trips to the portaloos of doom as ‘Glastonferret’ the original indoor turfed festival returns to The Ferret in July

A

rguably one of the finest and most unique venues in the Lancashire, The Ferret in Preston has, and continues, to be an outlet for the finest and most original acts currently slogging their way across the UK live circuit. Whilst the music scene continues to be disregarded by robots glued to ‘Britain’s Got The Clone Factor’ on the moron box every Saturday night, the good folk at The Ferret are giving you access to something real, something you can make your own and love like some kind of wayward child with a potty mouth and disregard for ‘the rules’. Music with feeling and emotion. ‘Glastonferret’ one of the jewels in the venues crown, is back for another year, bigger and better than ever. There is turf on the whole inside of the venue, for that great outdoors feeling, hay-bales to sit on, guest craft ales and an otherwise fully stocked bar, a second bar filled with cider and summery drinks, a BBQ outside featuring world-famous ‘Ferret Burgers’ and hotdogs, DJs and other acts packed into a tent in the beer garden, and, most importantly, three days filled with brilliant and diverse acts on the stages. Events run from Friday night until Sunday night. Friday 8pm - midnight, Saturday 12pm - 2am and

Sunday 12pm - midnight, with acts playing and food and drink available all day. The Saturday night sees the venue open until 2am! With DJs and a post show party. From 12pm-3pm Saturday and Sunday, there is a live open stage with free entry, featuring open mic acts all afternoon before the event begins. Line Up: Friday: Shields, Sweet Deals On Surgery, Doppelganger, New York Tourists. Saturday: Then Thickens, Kagoule, Rook & The Ravens, Jordan Allan, Seamus Mcloughlin, Pinstripe Pigeon Band, Go Around Captain, Antelopes, Breaking Waves, Jekyll. Sunday: The Folkestra, Bees Of Burden, Tales Of Two Counties, Billy Bibby, Bear Around Your Neck, Sean Keefe & The Diableros, Mog Stanley, Adam Shaw, The Sweeney Astray, The Porter & May. ‘Glastonferret’ at The Ferret, 55 Fylde Road, PR1 2XQ Preston, Lancashire. Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July. For further information head to www.theferret.info Main photo by Arlen Connelly

Wheels in motion for Moor Park

Work has now started on Moor Park to construct the skate park, as part of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) project

T

he skate park will be a regional attraction and has been funded by the Heritage & Big Lottery Funds, but funding support has also come from Preston City Council, UCLan & Community Gateway Association. Freestyle Skate Parks, one of the UK’s leading skate park construction companies, has worked in partnership with the Preston City Council and Preston Skatepark Projects Community Group to design the area to incorporate the best features for its users. They have also taken into account the drainage, landscaping and safety of the skate park. Mayor of Preston, Councillor Nick Pomfret, said: ‘The skate park is going to be a great addition to an already beautiful and well-used Preston park. It is going to be an excellent facility that will benefit a lot of young people, but also be a draw for people from across the North West.’ Bob Frost, Chair of Preston Skatepark Projects, said: ‘This will be a great project and encourage more people to use Moor Park, which is what the heritage lottery scheme is all about. The skatepark will strengthen what is already a great city centre park and give the youth of the city an alternative to the more traditional sports already on offer.’ 18

• The skate park will cost £320,000 • The skate park will be located in the North East of Moor Park, close to the Parks main large car park. • The skatepark is scheduled for completion by autumn 2015. • The full Heritage & Big Lottery Funded Restoration is a £2.3 million project. • Future improvements to Moor Park funded by the HLF such as improvements to tree stock, entrance features, cricket pitches, the main car park, the recreation of an ornamental garden, provision of an events arena and the refurbishment of a stone grotto.
