Visitor Information Centre Makes Way For £1m Guild Hall Make Over Preston’s Visitor Information Centre is on the move, to make way for a £1m transformation of Preston Guild Hall. The new ‘Villa Italian’ restaurant and new wine bar ‘Review’ are set for the Guild Hall, adding a whole new vitality to Preston City Centre. To help progress these exciting City Centre developments, the Council is relocating the Visitor Information Centre to Preston Town Hall, so that it becomes part of the Council’s existing customer contact centre. This move, which will save the Council up to £80,000 a year, was welcomed by Councillor John Swindells – Deputy Leader of the Council, who said: ‘The £1m transformation of Preston Guild Hall under Simon Rigby’s ownership is really gathering pace. A new Italian restaurant and wine bar is next, which will be great additions to Preston’s growing restaurant and night time economy. We need to re-locate the Visitor Information Centre to make way for these exciting developments. By moving a short distance across the road to the Town Hall we can

continue to provide a Visitor Information service and allow the Guild Hall to blossom. What’s more is that we can save taxpayers up to £80,000 a year by merging the visitor information service with our Contact Centre. This is another example of the benefit of transferring the Guild Hall to a successful local business.’ Simon Rigby, owner of Preston Guild Hall, added: ‘The Guild Hall goes from strength to strength. The whole team is working flat out to create an experience that Preston can be proud of. We’ve already made a whole host of improvements to the Guild Hall and we have some big announcements to make on our events programme for 2015. As part of our ambition to be Lancashire’s premier entertainment venue, we are investing over one million pounds in our new ‘Villa Italian’ restaurant and ‘Review’ wine bar. Work starts next month and when it’s finished, guests will enjoy first class food and drink in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. When I took over ownership of the Guild Hall I promised not only to re-invigorate the venue but also to save money for the taxpayers of Preston. I am delighted that moving the Visitor Information Centre will not only allow the Guild Hall to flourish but will also save £80,000 a year for the taxpayer. Who could argue with that?’

Honorary Freedom Of Preston For Lady Grenfell-Baines On Thursday 5th February, Lady GrenfellBaines became the 25th person awarded the title of Honorary Freedom of the City of Preston For over 50 years, Milena Grenfell-Baines has been a notable citizen of Preston. Whether as Chairperson of the Preston Friends of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, trustee of the Harris Charity or as a hard working member of the city’s Twinning Committee, she has brought dynamism, generosity of spirit and love of culture to her role. Lady Grenfell-Baines has put her legendary cookery skills to work on behalf of Preston and the wider region for decades. For Preston Guild 2012 she continued her commitment to fostering and promoting artistic talent, with her involvement in ‘The Young Musician of the Guild’. Mayor of Preston, Councillor Nick Pomfret, lead the ceremony at Preston Town Hall. He commented: ‘Lady Grenfell-Baines has been a wonderful ambassador for Preston. With her

natural charm and enthusiasm, she has been an inspiration to many. From first coming to England as a child refugee from Czechoslovakia just prior to the Second World War, Milena has shown remarkable spirit and energy to all the different aspects of her life. I am delighted to preside over this ceremony and welcome Lady GrenfellBaines to the group of leading Prestonians on this list of Honorary Freemen and Freewomen of the City of Preston.’

Chorley to Host Opening National Cycling Race Over 100 top cyclists from across the country will descend on Chorley at Easter on Sat 4th April, as the borough kick starts the British Cycling Elite Road Race Series for 2015. Chorley Council has teamed up with British Cycling and Chorley Building Society to host the event that will see professional riders take on a challenging course around the borough in the first race of the season. The prestigious event will bring thousands of visitors into Chorley and build on the borough’s enthusiasm for cycling. It will also showcase the beautiful borough to a European audience when the event is broadcast on Eurosport. Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley Council, said: ‘People in Chorley have embraced cycling in recent years, particularly since the Manchester Commonwealth Games route was hosted in the borough. This enthusiasm has been reflected in the numbers of people, hundreds of them, who have taken part in our “Sky Rides” which we launched last year with British Cycling. Hosting this elite event will top off what has been a brilliant few years for cycling and will certainly put Chorley on the map. We’re delighted to have the first Elite Series race of the new season and it should provide a boost to the local economy with lots of visitors coming to watch the race.’

great way to keep fit and enjoy the outdoors but it is also good for the environment and can be enjoyed by all the family.’ The race, called the Chorley Grand Prix, is being organised by Chorley Council with sponsorship from Chorley Building Society. It will be held on Saturday 4 April and take in a 100-mile route. The start and finish line will be on Park Road in Chorley town centre with the road race taking in Chorley, Rivington, Belmont, Abbey Village, Withnell, Brinscall, Wheelton, Buckshaw Village and back to Chorley. The riders will complete five laps of the circuit but there will generally be rolling road closures in place, which will mean very minimal disruption to traffic. For further information on the Chorley Grand Prix, people are encouraged to visit chorley. gov.uk like Chorley Council on Facebook or follow @ChorleyCouncil on Twitter.

British Cycling’s director of cycle sport and membership, Jonny Clay, said: ‘We are all excited to welcome in the new British Cycling Elite Road season and the anticipation is only increased with new location Chorley set to host the opening round. The region has a proud cycle sport history and I’m very hopeful that the Chorley Grand Prix could lead the way to the creation of a Tour of Lancashire in future seasons. However, for now I am simply excited about 2015 and the racing that is going to take place. The appetite for top-level domestic racing has rarely been higher in this country and I’m very confident that the upcoming season will continue to increase competition and conditions for riders, while also entertaining new and existing fans of the sport.’ Chief Executive, Stephen Penlington from Chorley & District Building Society said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to support British Cycling and be a part of this prestigious event. As a local Building Society we are committed to playing our part in the community. Not only is cycling a

Olympian Gail Emms speaks at Preston Sports Awards 2015 Olympian Gail Emms MBE will visit Preston in March to speak at the Walker Smith Way Sports Awards, in association with Preston Guild Hall Ltd Former World Champion and silver medalist at the Athens Olympics, Gail is one of Britain’s most inspiring Olympians. Playing badminton from the age of four, she shaped her career around the sport and has represented her country since 1995. Now retired from professional competition, Gail has turned her attentions to sharing the hugely positive impact that sport can have on life and well–being. Gail works as an ambassador for sport, inspiring young people to be more active. Gail commented on her forthcoming visit: ‘I am honoured to have been asked to speak at the Preston sports awards. I understand the ceremony is in its tenth year. Finding good local talent and nurturing that desire to be the best you can be is priceless. Anything I can do to help inspire athletes is very important to me in my ambassador role.’ Jayne Raven, at event sponsors Walker Smith Way Legal, added: ‘Gail is the perfect choice to be our guest speaker. Her sporting story will motivate our award nominees and winners to continue with their dedication to sport in Preston. Pay & Display Charges Freeze Preston City Council made the decision to freeze pay and display charges on their city centre car parks. The decision was made at the end of January by Councillor Robert Boswell for pay and display charges to be frozen for the forthcoming year at Avenham, Market Hall, Hill Street and Trinity Square car parks. Cabinet member for community and environment, Councillor Robert Boswell, said: ‘We have made the decision to freeze pay and display charges at four of our car parks to make it easier for shoppers, visitors, commuters and businesses to access the city centre. The freeze has been put on for the forthcoming year. We have made a lot of improvements to the city centre and there will hopefully be more to come,

so now we want people to easily access parking close to the city centre and enjoy the ongoing regeneration.’ Addresses for the car parks; • Avenham car park, Skye Street, Preston, PR1 3XA • Market Hall car park, Tenterfield Street, Preston, PR1 2JD • Hill Street car park, Hill Street, Preston, PR1 2BB • Trinity Square car park, Market Street West, Preston, PR1 2EU

Preston Sports Awards 2015 Launched

Preparations are well underway for one of the most popular events on the Preston sporting calendar. The 10th annual Walker Smith Way Preston Sports Awards, in association with Preston Guild Hall Ltd., will be held on Friday 13th March, at Preston Guild Hall. This year will be one to remember with the city celebrating 10 years of the Annual Sports Awards event. A celebration event to launch the Sports Awards was held on Monday 12th January at Preston’s College. Part of the proceedings gave local sports clubs a platform to recognise their volunteers who go the extra mile. Richard Ellis, Preston Grasshoppers Rugby Football Club, attended to give sponsors and volunteers from across the city an insight into how the club had benefited from being recognised as the Community Organisation of the Year at the Preston Sports Awards in 2014. Mayor of Preston, Councillor Nick Pomfret, also attended on Monday and commented on the brilliant work of volunteers:- ‘Many clubs and events, but especially those represented here, would not be able to continue or even open their doors if it wasn’t for the wonderful people who volunteer their time. Commitment and dedication are required by athletes, both amateur and professional, but they are also two essential qualities that apply to volunteers across the city. I would personally like to thank them for their hard work and continued enthusiasm.’ At the 2015 Preston Sports Awards, there will be 17 awards up for grabs.

Preston News

A Place to Play Safely Preston City Council have cleaned the alley ways in Preston to improve the environment and to enable children to play in them safely.

Residents have been leafleted to encourage them to keep these areas clean for all to enjoy and have been asked to report any rubbish dumped. Council waste enforcement officers regularly have to deal with dumped rubbish in these areas which is an environmental crime and spoils the area for other residents. Cabinet member for community and environment, Councillor Robert Boswell, said: ‘We have cleaned up alley ways in the past and as soon as we did we noticed that children started to play in them. They are a natural safe place for children to play and exercise. Routine removal of dumped waste has been suspended and anyone identified as mistreating the alley ways could face legal action. ‘Dumped rubbish in alleyways has been a problem in previous years but now that we have cleaned the alley ways we hope they will stay clean for the sake of the children and the community in general. Dumping rubbish is a serious issue and if you are caught, or waste from your property is found fly tipped, you could face large penalties or even a term of imprisonment.’

• To report fly tipping call the litterline on 01772 906909 or visit www.preston.gov.uk/ yourservices/bins-and-recycling/grot-spots/. • In total over 200 alleyways have been cleaned. • Around 5,000 houses have received leaflets. • All waste must be presented in the collection bins and boxes provided. To arrange extra collections or bulky waste collections call 01772 906905. • Leading the way - Some of the best maintained alley ways in Preston include Dove Street (Deepdale), Bence Road/Roman Road (Frenchwood), Rydal Road (Ribbleton) and Browning Road (Ribbleton). • Since the watch your backs campaign began dumped waste in alley ways has reduced by around four fifths.
