£22,000 to inspire Local Communities Local neighbourhoods across Preston are set for a £22,000 funding boost from the City Council.

A

new Community Innovation Fund is now up and running that aims to support local neighbourhoods, voluntary and community groups across Preston. Focused on innovation and making a difference, the launch for the £22,000 fund marks a new era in supporting local communities as Councillor Matthew Brown Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Inclusion and Policy explained: “We want to help local communities at a grass roots level, to make a real difference on the ground. More and more, we are seeing a disruption to the status quo and people taking the initiative to improve their own lives and the lives of others in their communities and neighbourhoods. “This is what our Community Innovation Fund is all about. Laying the foundations and building capacity for groups to take the lead to bring about change street by street, community by community. “Every community is different with different needs and solutions. So, as a Council we have to be flexible to

10

allow communities to take charge of their own destiny. By empowering groups we can support a wide range of innovation and ideas to improve health, tackle food and other poverty, revitalise neighbourhoods or purchase technology and equipment to access new skills. All this is possible and more. It’s really exciting to help create a movement within Preston for the benefit of everyone.” Councillor Martin Rawlinson, Cabinet Member for Resources, added: “This is a key priority for the Council, to support local communities and neighbourhoods. Yet, with such strain on public finances we have to think differently. To encourage and nurture innovation. To give power to the people to see and deliver change. From small acorns do big oak trees grow and that is exactly what this new fund is all about. Every community and we mean every community - stands to benefit from this new fund and we are eager to hear ideas and suggestions from across the whole city. Anyone interested in applying for funding should contact their local Councillor who is the one that needs to champion the cause and apply on behalf of the group.”

Preston Leisure Centre Joins the Fuel Revolution A Green Swim & Gym!

F

ulwood Leisure Centre recently joined the fuel revolution by updating its heating system. By replacing it with a wood pellet biomass boiler, making it a sustainably powered leisure facility, this is the latest of several ongoing energy efficiency initiatives being undertaken by Preston City Council. This change alone will reduce the Council’s total annual CO2 emissions by 3%. The new biomass boiler at Fulwood Leisure Centre uses wood pellets. Pellets are a processed form of wood which, although more expensive to purchase, are much more condensed and uniform. This means they have a lower moisture content than wood chip and are therefore a more efficient type of biomass fuel. Evidence has shown that pellet-fired boilers require less maintenance and repair. Executive member for Community and Environment, Councillor Robert Boswell, said: “We are pleased to be making these energy efficient changes as we replace old equipment. This biomass boiler is an exciting addition to Fulwood Leisure Centre as it will, in time, save the council money, but also reduce the carbon footprint.”

12

Executive member for Culture and Leisure Services, Councillor Veronica Afrin added: “Fulwood Leisure Centre is an important Preston resource and we are pleased to have found a solution that meets its extensive energy needs in an environmentally friendly way.” IMAGES: Councillor Robert Boswell and Councillor Veronica Afrin with the biomass boiler.

WHEN IT COMES TO HOME IMPROVEMENTS, YOU KNOW YOU ARE THE BEST AT WHAT YOU DO WHEN SARAH BEENY REQUIRES YOUR SERVICES TO WORK ON HER OWN HOME. RESIN DRIVES BASED IN BRADFORD WON THE CONTRACT TO RE-SURFACE SARAH’S 450 METRE DRIVEWAY EARLIER THIS YEAR, JUST ANOTHER CELEBRITY NAME TO ADD TO THEIR CUSTOMER LIST AS THEY ALSO TRANSFORMED URI GELLER’S 2,000 METRE DRIVE LAST YEAR. Being a well-known expert at home improvements and restoration work to property that adds aesthetic and monetary value, Sarah wants only the best people when it comes to working on her own home and obviously the reputation for the standard and high quality of work Resin Drives in Bradford provides is spreading and reaching people at the highest level. The Background Resin bound drives were traditionally used in the commercial sector as the range of colours and patterns lend themselves perfectly to corporate colours and logos and have been used for hotels, company headquarters and even premiership football clubs and soon the more prestigious home builders wanted resin drives for their new developments as they definitely add the ‘wow factor’. The aggregate is supplied in a large choice of standard and bespoke shades making the decorative potential unique to your taste and colour scheme, and the use of templates on site means that virtually any pattern and style can be achieved, including lettering and images within your driveway.

giving it all round better traction for tyres, making it safer for walking on and last but not least, it’s up to 10 times more eco-friendly than concrete. Some companies will lay resin on hard-core, however you should really only lay resin drives on concrete or asphalt. With a tired looking tarmac drive that’s still in relatively good condition then a resin bound drive can transform it in comparatively quick time.

Kerb Appeal Home owners and house builders alike recognise that differentiating a property’s façade from neighbouring homes can have a positive impact on value and with the decorative potential that Resin Drives provides, it’s the deal way to do just that.

Guarantee The completed driveway itself is porous so there’s no issues with drainage, it’s resistant to weed growth and occasional power washing is all the maintenance that’s required. Resin Drives offer a 5 Year Insurance Backed Guarantee on all of their installations.

Achieve stunning results At their large premises in Bradford, they have constructed a state of the art external showroom to give customers an understanding of what resindrives. co.uk are all about and the options available on colour and finish. Resin Drives believe in looking after our environment and are taking steps to lower their carbon footprint. All of their resin drives are made up of natural stone and 100% organic resin, which look fantastic, and is as strong and durable as concrete, without the heavy cost to the planet. Resin completely transforms driveways, patio areas and even something as simple as a path.

Why Resin over concrete, block paving or tarmac? That’s simple; their product naturally drains water through the finished surface which means no more puddles. It is also resistant to weeds, hence

PROUDLY ENDORSED BY SARAH BEENY, CELEBRITY EXPERT PROPERTY DEVELOPER

Preston’s Fish Market Set For Facelift

The first stage in the restoration of Preston’s historic Fish Market is now underway, with specialist investigation into the 90 year old structure.

T

he Fish Market canopy is a grade II listed building and in need of repairs. However, before full refurbishment work can begin, specialist metal workers must fully examine the state of the metal columns that hold up the canopy.

“There will be some minimal disruption to trading under the Fish Market canopy whilst the works are underway but there is enough space in the markets area, to accommodate all outdoor and car boot traders.

The specialist investigative works are required to find out the full extent of repairs that might be needed to the Fish Market.

“The main thing is that we are making progress. We’ve opened a dialogue with traders and are keen to work in partnership with all traders to deliver a brighter future for the markets. Indeed, following on from this consultation it is clear that we need to invest more money into the market to make sure we “get it right” for traders and also for Preston which prides its self on a unique, thriving and vibrant market. This commitment to investing more into the markets does however present us with different challenges. For example, we now have to look again at the procurement of professional services supporting the project, such as architects, but it’s a nice challenge to have.

Welcoming the start of the works at Preston’s Market’s Councillor Peter Rankin, Leader of Preston City Council said: “This is the very start of our multi-million pound investment into Preston’s Markets Quarter. Firstly, we will fully restore the Fish Market canopy. It is a wonderful structure dating from mid 1920s and it is very much a Preston landmark. We have to treat the Fish Market with care. It is a listed building and we have to fully explore the condition of the metal working. This work is expected to last several weeks before we gear up to start on the restoration proper in the autumn

“So lots to be positive about as we look forward to making progress together as a city.”
