Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Paul Aspin feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ribble Valley area & Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth

is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just

goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Shutters the way you want them

S

tyleshutters North West was registered in Feb. 2014 and is a sister company to Border Blinds Ltd which was established in the year 2000. An excellent reputation has been developed in the Ribble Valley and Pendle area over the last fifteen years. However, it was felt that with the increasing public awareness of wooden interior plantation shutters it would be more efficient to establish a separate company dealing exclusively and solely with shutter enquiries. All enquiries will be entitled to a free no obligation survey and estimate for both supplying and fitting. Please visit our showroom today or view our current products on the website.

Step closer for Clitheroe Market

redevelopment

The proposed redevelopment of Clitheroe Market took a step closer this week after the shortlist of six potential developers was reduced to two.

R

esearch into the viability of a redevelopment of the market site was presented to Ribble Valley Borough Council last year.

The selection of a development partner in line with the council’s procurement procedures started and a shortlist of six potential developers was drawn up. Now the shortlist has been reduced to two, who are currently finalising their submissions. Colin Hirst, Ribble Valley Borough Council’s head of regeneration and housing, said: ‘The final submissions will be evaluated with a view to making a recommendation to the council’s policy and finance committee in September. We will then select a partner, who will work up a detailed scheme and submit a planning application for a retail-led mixed-

use market development and car park. This is a fantastic opportunity to bring modern retail and leisure facilities to Clitheroe town centre, and the proposed scheme generated strong interest from developers across the country. ‘We expect a planning application will be submitted and approved by next March, with work starting in the summer. We will be holding discussions with market tenants and businesses who may be affected by the proposed redevelopment over the coming months.’

Residents invited to take the plunge

for fitness

Ribble Valley residents are invited to take the plunge in a free new fitness scheme currently making waves across the country

R

ibblesdale Pool in Clitheroe is to host Swimtag, which offers swimmers analytical data via a unique wristband.

The Swimtag wristband feeds detailed information from a swimming session to a dedicated web site, featuring a profile page with a colour-coded graph outlining average pace, rest times and stroke rates. The page includes a swim summary, logs personal best times and training plan progression, and information from Ribblesdale Pool. Colin Winterbottom, Ribble Valley Borough Council’s culture and leisure services manager, said: ‘A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in half an hour and a fast front crawl can burn as many calories as an eight-mile run. Swimming can support up to ninety per cent of the body’s weight in water, meaning those with disabilities, injuries or illnesses, such as arthritis, can also take part in sport in a comfortable and safe environment. Swimtag is a valuable aid to swimmers by motivating and encouraging them to reach their goals, and it’s free.’

A recent survey has revealed that 52 per cent of swimmers had been motivated by using Swimtag and 62 per cent said it had helped them improve their swimming. Further details about Swimtag are available from Ribblesdale Pool on 01200 424825.

Money Matters

How to haggle for the best deals By Martin Lewis Haggling isn’t just a skill for market stalls, these days where it really pays is at call centres. And if you’re a Sky customer there’s no better time to put your haggling skills to the test, as some Sky TV customers are facing hikes of over £50 a year. Yet this isn’t just for Sky. It works for other TV firms, mobile, TV, broadband, breakdown and more. Last year on my site, I polled over 7,000 people who tried to call-centre haggle, to see how successful they were company by company. The results are staggering, at Sky 86% succeeded in some form of discount, the AA 84%, TalkTalk 83%, Plusnet 82%, Virgin media 80% and RAC 78%. In other words, for every five people who tried, four got a deal. And don’t think the amounts are trivial either, here’s just some of the successes people have tweeted me in Sky’s current round of price hikes… “Just saved £315 a year with a good old haggle with Sky, cheers Martin.” “Phoned up and in 10 mins it’d knocked £134 16 No change to services or terms. off my bill. Thank you!” “Managed to save almost 50% by calling. Firm but polite with a clear message throughout my call.” 16

So don’t be shy, it’s time to tool up and get a haggle on. Here are my top ten tips (but for you, I’ll do it in 9)...

1. Benchmark the best deal.

It’s important to have the factual arsenal. Research the deals, discounts and codes that are available for new customers, as a basis for negotiation. Here’s a quick rundown for each of the main haggle areas. Digital TV: For example, you can currently get 25% off all Sky TV bundles and £75 bill credit, compare this with what you will be paying. You can use this figure to haggle with Sky or Virgin. See www.mse.me/digitalTV for all the deals. And of course the cheapest digital TV option is Freeview. It’s a one-off cost of around £20 for a box and there’s no monthly subscription. Breakdown cover: If you go via a cashback site, you can effectively sign up for basic AA or RAC cover for under £20. See www.mse.me/ breakdown for full best-buys. Broadband: Here the best deals are all promo offers. A common level is line rent and broadband for £16 a month, plus a £100 high street voucher. Full best-buys in www.mse.me/broadband.

2. Timing is crucial.

Haggling works best when you’re near or beyond the end of your contract as then they have a real risk you’ll leave. There’s no harm in giving it a try when you’re not, if you struggle then diarise when you’re nearing the end (you can give Sky notice of leaving 31 days before the end of your contract) and call back then.

Advertise your business call 0800 970 7687 or email info@link-mag.co.uk

Business & Finance 3. The haggling Holy Grail is the customer retention department.

If you’re coming to the end of your contract, or are out of it, then you’re wielding a powerhouse weapon: customer loyalty. If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”. There the staff ’s job is to keep you, and they have massively more discretion to offer you deals to do so.

4. Use charm, chutzpah, cheek and a smile.

Aggression or anger will just put their back up. You’re asking for a discount, and they’re just as much within their right not to give it as you are to leave.

Aim for polite, firm and non-combative.

5. Use the phrases that pay. You may find that the customer service rep will only offer a small discount at first, but if you don’t agree with the price use phrases like:

n I’ve worked out my monthly budget, and my absolute max is £[insert price here]/month n [TalkTalk/Virgin/BT] can do it for less... n I need to think about it... n I think my husband / wife will go bonkers if I pay that... n It’s still a lot of money... n What’s the very best you can do?

6. Don’t panic if it calls your bluff and says it’ll disconnect you.

Some people worry and get nervous to try this in case they’re disconnected. My easy ‘get out of jail free’ card on this is the phrase: “Hold on, I’ll call you back on that. I’d like to check with my wife/ husband/dog/Aunt Fanny first.”

7. Ask if it can throw in extras.

If it won’t slash the price, see if it can include any extras, like free calls or extra channels, bigger download limits, or one level higher breakdown cover

If they don’t offer the deal you want, tell them you’re going to leave. This means you get put through to what they externally call “disconnections”, but internally is called “customer retentions”

8. If you fail? Try, try and try again.

I’ve heard rumours that different staff members have quotas of how many deals they can do. Even if not true, it feels like that to many. You may have called the wrong person at the wrong time. So call back a few days later and speak to someone else. This works for many people.

9. Vote with your feet.

If you don’t get what you want and other firms offer the same for less, then you should seriously consider leaving and go grab one of those deals.

Affordable homes boost in barrow

Twenty -Eight affordable homes will be up for grabs in Barrow by local residents from October.

A

nd a registration event for the new properties will take place at Whalley Methodist Church Hall on Thursday, July 14, from 4.30 to 7pm. The two and three-bedroom houses will be available on a shared ownership or affordable rented basis at the former Pendle Garage site, now called Barleyfields. Barleyfields is being developed by North West housing association Great Places Housing Group and affordable home ownership company Plumlife in partnership with Ribble Valley Borough Council. Shared ownership allows residents to buy from 35 to 75 per cent of a new home and pay rent on the remainder, with the option of increasing their share as their circumstances change. The council’s housing strategy manager, Rachael Stott, said: ‘We are delighted to have supported this excellent scheme, which will make much-needed high-quality rental and shared ownership properties 18residents with a local connection.’ available to Tom Johnson, neighbourhood coordinator for East Lancashire at Great Places Housing Group, added: ‘Barleyfields will provide new high-quality affordable family homes in a desirable area, where the need for such properties is high. We are pleased to be helping

18

local residents get on the property ladder through our sales team, Plumlife.’ The provision of affordable housing is one of the biggest challenges facing Ribble Valley Borough Council, which is working closely with housing partners to address the problem. House prices in the borough are way above the national average and firsttime buyers are being forced out of the communities their families have lived in for generations. Ribble Valley Borough Council is at the forefront of several housing initiatives, from the provision of affordable properties in partnership with the housing sector to cutting-edge energy efficiency. As well as Barleyfields, shared ownership properties, including one-bedroom apartments, four-bedroom family homes and two-bedroom bungalows, are currently available in Whalley, Billington and at other sites in Barrow. Anyone interested in a shared ownership or affordable rented property should contact Ribble Valley Borough Council’s housing team on 01200 414567.

The forum provides a voice for all older people living within the Ribble Valley, anyone is welcometo attend, but the group is particularly keen to involve those aged 50+. Members are unpaid and therefore passionate about the voluntary work they are committed to in the community. We feel that personal experience is vital in understanding the problems and difficulties with which the older generation is faced. We have a good working relationship with many older people’s organisations but are entirely independent and non-political. The Forum meets about every 6 weeks in different locations, and usually has an interesting speaker. Our meetings are open to all - come along and meet new people, and help to make a diffference. The group meets at various locations around the Ribble Valley. Charges are a contribution to the lunch.
