Cloudy2Clear Windows โ Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT
Itโs been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes โ not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Branch Manager Paul Aspin feels that itโs all about service. โOur product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But itโs not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.
Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didnโt focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didnโt expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.โ Cloudy2Clear service the Ribble Valley area & Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. โThe truth
is that itโs not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people Iโve done work for, which just
goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.โ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and heโll be happy to help!

Lancashire women urged to get pretty muddy Lancashire women are being urged to fight dirty when it comes to conquering cancer - by signing up now for an exciting new event from Cancer Research UKโs Race for Life
P
reston has been chosen to host the only Race for Life Pretty Muddy event taking place in the county this summer.
Pretty Muddy is a women-only, non-competitive 5k obstacle course โ with added mud. It will take place for the first time in the city at Prestonโs Moor Park on Saturday, July 18. Cancer Research UKโs Race for Life family of events also includes the 5k and 10k courses, which thousands of women will take on at the same venue on Sunday, May 24 to raise money for life-saving research. Itโs the perfect challenge for those looking to shake off the January blues and commit to get more active in 2015. Every hour, more than four people are diagnosed with cancer in North West. And thatโs why Cancer Research UK is calling on Lancashire women to fight back against this devastating disease by choosing their challenge - Pretty Muddy, 5k or 10k - and signing up now. Laura Taylor, Cancer Research UKโs North West Event Manager, said: โWeโre so excited about launching Race for Life Pretty Muddy in Preston. The event is taking place in the city for the first time and weโre calling on local ladies to sign up now. Weโve no doubt that theyโve got the fighting spirit to get down and dirty in the bid to beat cancer sooner. Pretty Muddy promises all the fun and camaraderie of our much loved 5k and 10k events โ just with an extra serving of mud. Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. Women can complete the Pretty Muddy course at their own pace, climbing, jumping, walking and laughing their way around. Itโs about an army of women coming together in the fight against cancer. If youโre looking for an opportunity to get the New Year off to good start, this is the time to commit to Race for Life. With fire in their bellies and trainers at the ready, we know that Preston ladies are up for the challenge.โ Cancer Research UKโs Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy events which raises millions of pounds every year to help beat 200 different types of cancer. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UKโs doctors, nurses and scientists
to advance research which is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the Lancashire. Cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s and Cancer Research UKโs work has been at the heart of that progress. But more funds and more supporters are needed to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Laura continued: โWeโre calling on the brave ladies of Lancashire to pull on their leggings and take on cancer at this yearโs event. Race for Life is to celebrate those who are with us, and also remember those who are not. The atmosphere is electric, our participants are so inspiring and weโre calling on the women of Lancashire to help make 2015 our best year yet.โ To enter Race for Life today go to raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770.

Affordable homes boost in Barrow Twenty eight affordable homes will be up for grabs in Barrow by local residents from October
T
he two and three-bedroom houses will be available on a shared ownership or affordable rented basis at the former Pendle Garage site, now called Barleyfields. Local residents will be given priority and consideration will be given to people with special housing needs. Barleyfields is being developed by North West housing association Great Places Housing Group and affordable home ownership company Plumlife in partnership with Ribble Valley Borough Council, who also collaborated on the popular affordable housing scheme at Petre Wood, Langho. A total of 25 two and three-bedroom properties were made available to local residents at Petre Wood. Resident Sid Hill said: โWe now have a family home at an affordable price in a nice area near our childrenโs school. It is a lovely little neighbourhood and we couldnโt be happier.โ Neighbour Lorraine Wilson added: โThanks to this scheme, my daughter and I have new home with a garden and driveway, and we are delighted.โ Two shared ownership properties are still available at Petre Wood, with prices ranging from ยฃ66,500 for a 35 per cent share, with ยฃ226.42 monthly rent on the remainder, to ยฃ142,500 for a 75 per cent share, with ยฃ87.08 monthly rent on the remainder. The provision of affordable housing is one of the biggest challenges facing Ribble Valley Borough Council, which is working closely with housing partners to address the problem. The councilโs housing strategy manager, Rachael Stott, said: โWe are delighted to have supported these
excellent schemes, which have made much-needed high-quality rental and shared ownership properties available to residents with a local connection.โ Great Placesโ director of development Peter Bojar added: โThese developments will provide new highquality affordable family homes in a desirable area, where the need for such properties is high. We are pleased to be able to help people get on the property ladder on a shared-ownership basis through our sales arm, Plumlife.โ House prices in Ribble Valley are way above the national average and first-time buyers are being forced out of the communities their families have lived in for generations. Ribble Valley Borough Council is at the forefront of several housing initiatives, from the provision of affordable properties in partnership with the housing sector to cutting-edge energy efficiency. As well as Petre Wood and Barleyfields, shared ownership properties, including one-bedroom apartments, four-bedroom family homes and twobedroom bungalows, are currently available at Lune Road and Low Moor Gardens in Clitheroe, Water Meadows in Longridge, Whalley Road in Billington and Barrow Brook Grange in Barrow. Anyone interested in a shared ownership or affordable rented property should contact Ribble Valley Borough Councilโs housing team on 01200 414567. S
tage 2 will see 20 of the worldโs top cycling teams, including Olympic and world champions, and Tour de France stage winners, power through Ribble Valley and Pendle from Clitheroe to Colne, taking in the Nick oโ Pendle climb, Dunsop Bridge, which is the official Centre of the Kingdom, Slaidburn in the Forest of Bowland and Barnoldswick. Ribble Valley Borough Council leader Stuart Hirst said: โRibble Valley is one of the UKโs premier visitor destinations, with a national reputation for fine food and drink, outstanding independent shops and stunning countryside. The Tour of Britain attracts a huge following, as well as an international television audience, so is the ideal showcase for Ribble Valleyโs many attractions. We are delighted to be hosting the Tour of Britain and look forward to giving the elite cyclists, their teams and tens of thousands of visitors a warm Ribble Valley welcome.โ After departing from Clitheroe in the morning, the race will pass back through the town in the afternoon, before the run to the finish through Nelson and into Colne. Pendle councillor Paul White, who has responsibility for enterprise, growth and promotion, said: โWeโre really excited to be hosting this yearโs Tour of Britain. Stage Two is the shortest but toughest of the stages, so it will be a great one to watch. The Tour is the countryโs largest free-to-spectate sporting event, attracting thousands of spectators to each stage. According to an independent report, host areas can expect an injection of over ยฃ2m into their economy. Pendle is a hidden gem and this gives us an amazing opportunity to show the world what we have to offer! Weโre really excited and hope that everyone will get behind the Tour and help make it a fantastic event.โ It will be the first visit of the Friends Life Tour of Britain to the two boroughs since 2010, when the opening stage of the race passed through on its way from Rochdale to Blackpool, and the first time that Clitheroe or Colne have been a host venue. Commenting on the announcement, Mick Bennett, race director at Friends Life Tour of Britain organisers SweetSpot, said: โ We are pleased to be bringing the race to Ribble Valley and Pendle for the first time and look forward to showcasing the area via the

Orienteering course up and running at Clitheroe Castle An orienteering course is up and running at Clitheroe Castle
T
he course has seven routes ranging from easy with seven points to difficult with 16 points, as well as a route that is fully accessible with eight points.
It covers the whole of the castle grounds, taking in many well-known features and some that are not so well-known. Orienteering, the outdoor adventure sport that exercises and challenges the mind and body, is gaining popularity across the UK. The aim is to navigate in sequence between points marked on a map. It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course at your own pace. Ribble Valley Borough Councilโs sports development officer, Peter Fletcher, said: โOrienteering is a great sport for all, whether young or old, active or less active, for those who want to improve their navigation skills, or for anyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors more. It is suitable for all ages and fitness levels, families, the elderly and those with restricted mobility. It is also an excellent team-building activity, so is ideal for schools,
The Fletcher family of Whalley enjoy the new orienteering course at Clitheroe Castle
sports clubs, Cubs and Brownies, Scouts and Guides, companies and organisations. The castle grounds are rich and varied, and a fantastic venue for orienteering, so this course is a great addition to Ribble Valleyโs community sport and leisure offer.โ Maps for the course are available for ยฃ2 each, with discounts for 10 or more, from the Clitheroe Castle Museum Shop and Clitheroe Visitor Information Centre in Station Road.
council colleagues enjoy a taste of โfair fareโ
Staff at Ribble Valley Borough Council enjoyed a taste of โfair fareโ, when the authority marked Fairtrade fortnight with a food sampling session
D
uring their lunchtime break, council workers sampled Fairtrade food, including chocolate and biscuits, and were treated to a Fairtrade cuppa.
The event, organised by the Clitheroe Fairtrade Group, included an exhibition of Fairtrade products, a short film about two tea farmers in Malawi who have benefited from Fairtrade and a prize draw for an Easter egg. The councilโs principal surveyor and Fairtrade enthusiast, Tim Lynas, said: โThe event aimed to raise awareness about Fairtrade and colleagues were surprised by the wide range of Fairtrade products available, particularly from big brand names. Swapping18 just one item a week in your shopping basket to Fairtrade can make a significant difference to farmers in the developing world and we plan to hold a similar event in November featuring Fairtrade festive gifts.โ Fairtrade campaigns for fair prices and better working conditions for farming communities in developing 18

countries. Over 1.4million farmers producing a wide range of products, from bananas and coffee to soap and shampoo, have benefited from the scheme. Fairtrade also requires producers to uphold the rights of their workers, including safe working conditions.

A flurry of first-rate art galleries and exhibition spaces have opened in the area in recent years and the Ribble Valley is also home to some outstanding public art projects, such as the Clitheroe Castle Labyrinth and Ribble Valley Sculpture Trail. At 300 square miles, most of which is in the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Ribble Valley offers peaceful and panoramic views as well as plenty of inspiration for creative minds and art enthusiasts. The forum provides a voice for all older people living within the Ribble Valley, anyone is welcometo attend, but the group is particularly keen to involve those aged 50+. Members are unpaid and therefore passionate about the voluntary work they are committed to in the community. We feel that personal experience is vital in understanding the problems and difficulties with which the older generation is faced. We have a good working relationship with many older peopleโs organisations but are entirely independent and non-political. The Forum meets about every 6 weeks in different locations, and usually has an interesting speaker. Our meetings are open to all - come along and meet new people, and help to make a diffference. The group meets at various locations around the Ribble Valley. Charges are a contribution to the lunch.
