Diary of a local Councillor Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to. Saturday: As this weekend was a bank holiday
weekend, I took the chance to get out in the sun and tidy up one or two of the public gardens around Anchorsholme. Most of them had grown weeds over the past few months so I weeded them and planted new seeds so hopefully they will be nice and colourful come the summer. In the evening I received some emails from residents and have organised to meet them on Monday.
Sunday: I had a day of and walked to Fleetwood and back along the Prom with my girlfriend, we had so much, nothing beats a good walk by the sea. Monday: Today I updated the notice boards in Anchorsholme and Eastpines Park. In the afternoon I visited several residents, all of whom had problems which varied from issues with paving stones to people who were unable to park outside their house. Walking home was lovely as I saw so many people who were out in their gardens working and had some lovely chats with some residents in the ward. I really do appreciate it when residents come out to say hello. It’s nice to hear from people, and that includes the problems they need help with. That is why I love my role as Councillor. It gives me the opportunity to help people and I love problem solving, too. So if you see me out and about do say hello! Tuesday: Today I attended a meeting regarding parking during the construction of Anchorsholme’s new promenade. In case you don’t know I’d like to make you aware of the new parking restrictions coming into place at the end of May. The restrictions concern the following roads: Chatteris Place, Buckden Close, Alconbury Crescent, Huntingdon Road, Queensbury, Ipswich Place, Blandford Avenue, Cherrywood Avenue and Anchorsholme Lane West. Firstly, Anchorsholme Lane West will have single yellow lines and no parking whatsoever between the hours of 8am and 6pm. The other roads will have residents only parking. Each household on those roads will receive a letter from the council asking you to claim your two resident’s parking permits.
After the meeting I visited a resident who is having problems with a broken boiler. Once I got back from these meetings I worked on my business. Thursday: I had a meeting with the dog warden team
from Blackpool Council today and I’m pleased to say we have recently caught two individuals who weren’t picking up their dog muck. The small number of people who aren’t picking up their dog mess are letting our area and the vast majority of dog walkers who do pick up, down. If you see anyone not picking up, don’t confront them, call me on 826679 with either a description and a time or an address of where they live and I will organise everything to catch them.
Friday: Today I took a general walk around the ward to see what needs doing and if there are any problems. I was upset on Monday to see Eastpines Park full of litter but today it looked much better. It is very frustrating that, despite the park having plenty of bins, litter is still thrown all around the place. In the evening I started working on our plan for the next few years for Anchorsholme, it’s going to have everything in it from new bus shelters, to new trees, basically it’s a map of where we want Anchorsholme to be in a few years time. the bingo club at St Teresa’s Church Hall which I enjoyed. It was brilliant to see everyone after the Easter break. In the afternoon I attended a meeting at the town hall which was great as it meant I got to have a ride on the tram which is a real treat for me.

WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities. Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, to keep everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers. Work due to start on leisure redevelopments Construction work is due to start to redevelop two health and fitness centres in Wyre Thanks to a £5.1m investment from Wyre Council, Thornton will benefit from a ten-pin bowling alley, indoor skate park, 3G outdoor pitches and additional fitness facilities, while Poulton will be extended to make room for an indulgent spa experience and new fitness studio. Contractors ISG will move on to both sites after Easter and in order to ensure the least amount of disruption throughout the seven-month build, Thornton will need to close from tomorrow (17 April) until early May for essential preliminary work. During this period a large wall will be erected between the main sports hall and the rest of the building, taking in the mezzanine and first floor. This will separate the building works from the rest of the centre and still allow customer access to two squash courts and Sports Hall A, housing the gym and activities including group exercise classes, gymnastics, martial arts and badminton.

The Poulton site remains unaffected as construction will start outside the existing building. As part of their membership package, members can continue to use all YMCA centres throughout the Fylde Coast with the nearest being Fleetwood and Poulton. Michael Ryan, Corporate Director of People and Places at Wyre Council, said: ‘Can we thank everyone in advance for their patience and reiterate that ourselves and the YMCA are doing everything we can to keep the centre operating throughout the redevelopment. As with any big building project there may be some inconvenience, especially at the beginning, but we ask members to keep in mind the fantastic new facilities they will be able to enjoy by the end of the year.’
