Diary of a local Councillor Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to. Saturday: Today was a day of two halves. I met up with a lovely lady this morning who is very concerned about the amount of dog fouling on our pavements. I’ve asked for the area in question to be given a deep clean, the people who don’t pick up after their dogs are letting down Anchorsholme and the vast majority of dog owners who are brilliant at picking up. We have done alot of work to catch the people responsible and in the next few weeks the various people responsible are going to be visited by the dog warden. If you have a problem with dog mess on your street in Anchorsholme call me on 826679. In the afternoon I had a meeting with a resident who was suffering from damp in their property and have put a plan together with him to help him get it sorted. Sunday: Today was lovely it finally felt like spring is coming. I updated the notice boards in Anchorsholme and tidied up some of the public gardens. I got the chance to chat with some lovely people and it was a really relaxing day. Monday: I attended a very exciting meeting today. I met up with everyone involved in the Promenade works and received some brilliant news. The scan of the promenade shows us that the foundations are fine and that the work is now speeding along nicely. The scan was carried out to look for any air pockets (voids) in the new structure which would indicate a structural weakness, the good news is no voids were found, Balfour Beatty have said they are aiming to have our new promenade completed by the end of December this year. Tuesday: Today was the busiest day I’ve ever had as a councillor. At 10am, I had a meeting with United Utilities in Anchorsholme Park to discuss their work plan for Anchorsholme Park it will last for four years and when completed will mean we have cleaner beach water and a brand new Anchorsholme Park with some of the best facilities available including new cafe, toilets, pavilion and sports areas and lots of landscaping to reduce the amount of wind in the Park. It will link up to our new promenade and it’s pathways will be the same colour as the promenade so you can go straight from the Prom in to the Park. I then went straight from that meeting and I attended the first of two public meeting we held to inform everyone about the Promenade and Park regeneration. Both meetings were well attended and it was great to hear residents views on how the park should look after the work has been completed. In between the meetings I also launched the new Wildlife Watch Group in
Eastpines Park, which is being run by a teacher from Anchorsholme Academy and we had over 30 children and some parents involved for it’s launch. The group will look for and support wildlife in the Park and it’s part of our major plan to make Eastpines Park a centre of sports training and wildlife education. The Wildlife Watch Group will meet in the Park at 3.30pm every first Tuesday of the month. I finally got home at 9.40pm and was really proud about what we achieved today. Wednesday: In the morning I called the bingo at St Teresa’s and then spoke to shop keepers to discuss where the trees will be going on Anchorsholme Lane East. The planting of trees is all part of the Anchorsholme 2020 plan which we’ve written. The trees will eventually link up to the rest of the trees we planted so we have a corridor of trees linking Anchorsholme Prom / Park to Eastpines Park via our shops so we connect all the amazing spaces we have in Anchorsholme together. It will put us on the map when it’s all completed in 2020. Thursday: Today I have been pushing the council to help in my scheme to drop some of the curbs in Anchorsholme. I’m hoping to have some very good news for you soon as it’s one of my big priorities to make some of our pavements far more accessible for all of our residents. In the afternoon I had a meeting about a controlled crossing at Anchorsholme Lane / North Drive, I’m determined to get us a crossing at this junction to reduce the number of accidents at this busy junction, I won’t stop until I’ve got that junction for us. Friday: I had a great day today, I ordered a defibrillator for St Teresa’s Primary School. The plan is to eventually get an external case for it so that it will be the third public defibrillator in Anchorsholme - the others being located at Sevenoaks Community Centre and outside Anchorsholme Library. We are determined to see that every resident in Anchorsholme is within three minutes access to a defibrillator. It’s a radical scheme as no else has done it yet but one day I’m sure it will be standard practice for the rest of the UK. What a week it’s been for Anchorsholme, I’m so excited about the direction we are headed in. Many thanks

Already a paint job and a new gallery are making the building look very smart, but soon the refurbished sails will be back in place. Work on them has finished and they are with a millwright. But before they can be reinstalled the fantail must go back in and two large beams inside the cap of the mill must be repaired. The sharp-eyed will have noticed the mill cap has been turned. This is to give better access for the replacement of the fantail. Although the shops at Marsh Mill Village remain open, the mill itself will not be accessible until after Easter because of delays to the mill restoration. Watch this space for more news of the opening. NORCROSS CRICKET CLUB As we head towards the warmer weather, another cricket season looms large. Tel Doreen 890775 WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities. Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, to keep everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers. Win tickets to see UB40 announce further UK tour dates for 2015 due to massive demand
Following their sold-out UK tour of 2014, reggae stars UB40 have announced nineteen further dates in May and June. The Brummie legends recently completed the second leg of their ‘Getting Over The Storm’ tour, which has seen UK’s most successful reggae band play over forty UK shows to over 100,000 fans. UB40’s 2015 UK tour dates, which start at Motherwell Concert Hall on Monday 4th and end at Doncaster Racecourse on Saturday 6th June, continues the band’s preference to avoid arena venues in the UK, as founding member and principal songwriter Brian Travers explains: ‘The success of this years tour has confirmed what we already knew, that it’s better to play to 100,000 people across forty intimate venues across the whole of the country rather than playing to the same number of people at six enormous domes in the same cities. It’s a much better experience for both the band and our fans, and we get to play in towns and cities we haven’t visited for many years.’ Fellow UB40 founding member and principal songwriter Jimmy Brown agrees: ‘The atmosphere in the venues on our current tour has been amazing. You can feel it from the stage and it lifts the band to a different level. You rarely get that in an arena. We’re never happier than when we are on stage; we are a working band, it’s what we do.’ The success of the tour is bound to rankle with UB40’s former lead singer Ali Campbell, who has repeatedly attempted to discredit his former bandmates since he walked out on them in 2008. UB40 founding member Robin Campbell said: ‘Ali has been shamelessly attempting to pass himself off as a “reformed UB40” since the start of 2014, which has confused many of our fans, the media and concert promoters all over the world. We’ve had to issue writs against Ali and two other former members. If they want to be UB40 so badly they should never have chosen to leave UB40 in the first place.’
