Diary of a local Councillor Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to. Sunday: I had a wonderful day today, I met up with the Friends of Eastpines Park who completed a funding bid to help pay for the continuation of the free football training run by the Blackpool Football Club Community Trust. The football has brought so many benefits to local children and a whole new use for Eastpines Park. It costs £6000 a year to run but is worth every penny.
Thursday: Following a call from a resident, I read up on the new Care Act that has just come in to law on the 1st April. It means the Council and all councils have to meet set criteria’s to support carers and support independent living as much as possible. All carers are now entitled to ask for support - this could be in the form of a paid care worker to give you a short break etc. There is also a cap on care costs and a deferred payment agreement which means that people should not have to sell their homes to pay for care. The new Care Act has massive potential to help our most vulnerable members of society and their carers, and if anyone wants more information about the new Care Act and what rights and support is now available please call me on 826679 and I’ll be happy to give you a small information Pack that I’ve found on the internet.
Monday: Had a very interesting meeting about Anchorsholme Park. Work is underway by United Utilities to install a cabin near the Anchorsholme Lane West entrance which will allow everyone to see the latest pictures and news during construction of the new underground storage tank in the Park. It will be open every day. Already a paint job and a new gallery are making the building look very smart, but soon the refurbished sails will be back in place. Work on them has finished and they are with a millwright. But before they can be reinstalled the fantail must go back in and two large beams inside the cap of the mill must be repaired. The sharp-eyed will have noticed the mill cap has been turned. This is to give better access for the replacement of the fantail. Although the shops at Marsh Mill Village remain open, the mill itself will not be accessible until after Easter because of delays to the mill restoration. Watch this space for more news of the opening. NORCROSS CRICKET CLUB The sun is shining (honest it is there in the sky!!!) and we are looking ahead to a successful season for both the senior and junior sections of the club as the cricket season starts. We currently have 3 senior teams, 2 play Saturdays and a Sunday Side. We also have a junior section looking to cater for all age groups from 10 years old and upwards. Tel Doreen 890775 WYRE ARCHAEOLOGY Wyre Archaeology (WAG) offers a rare opportunity for anyone with an interest in the history of the Fylde Coast and North Preston areas to get hands on experience of practical archaeology through our regular programme of excavations and other activities. Our 2013 BIG DIG found evidence of Iron Age, Roman and Early Mediaeval presence in the Thornton area and we’ll be following up these tantalising leads in future digs. In the 2014 season we also plan to investigate the elusive ‘Danes Pad’ and if you have an idea for a dig just get in touch. WAG is open to people of all ages and has previously provided practical experience for students going on to study for degrees in Archaeology. We’re keen to have new digging members but you’d be welcome whatever skill you might be able to bring at whatever level. We’re fully insured and we provide basic training and equipment. We’re affiliated to the Council for British Archaeology and have strong links with local professionals in the field. We meet at Farmer Parr’s in Thornton on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 7.00pm, to keep everyone informed of activities and there are occasional guest speakers. ou might have wondered what all these strange sights were in Cleveleys but do not panic it was Cardinal Allen pupils in disguise and all in aid of Brian House. Cardinal Allen School has recently become a member of Interact which is a Youth branch of Rotary. Under the guidance of Andy Harding and Christine Smith at Cardinal Allen they have formed ties with North Fylde Rotary Cleveleys and this was the first Charity fund raising venture for Cardinal Allen’s Interact group.. Andy Harding, Community school’s officer, said ‘we meet on Thursdays after school and have about twenty regulars attending and are working closely with Peter Kerekjarto , Youth Co ordinator at North Fylde Rotary.’
Fifteen pupils boarded a tram at Broadwater alongside Andrew Aukland,Roy Haskett and David Wilde from North Fylde Rotary to help shake buckets along the way to Cleveleys. Passengers were quite happy to share a seat with mad scientists and Despicable Me characters who despite their guises were all impeccably behaved ! Christine Smith Chaplain from Cardinal Allen really got into the spirit of the walk by appearing as a Minion from Despicable Me and said ‘ the students wanted to do something for a local Charity and also have some fun and they have certainly enjoyed themselves. They are a great bunch !’ After visiting Jolly Tars, The Venue and Harvester collecting with his bucket a final word from student Matthew Gowens,student Community Officer who in his Union Jack onesie and a big smile gave a High Five and said ‘ it’s been a brilliant day !
Leading cancer charity appeals for Fylde Coast volunteers A leading charity is looking for volunteers to help them reach even more people in the Fylde Coast area who are affected by cancer.
M
acmillan Cancer Support needs volunteers who are willing to establish or join a fundraising group on the Fylde Coast. Fundraising manager for Lancashire, Fiona Dundas said: ‘We have some really interesting volunteer roles available for people who want to take on a new challenge, have fun or just want to help us raise the money we need to fund our cancer services. For most of our roles, volunteers don’t need to have special skills or experience. They just need to be enthusiastic and willing to learn. We provide training if it’s needed and offer on-going support to ensure all our volunteers get the best possible experience while helping us be there for people affected by cancer.’
Macmillan is almost entirely funded by public donations and the charity says the support of volunteers is essential to helping it raise all the money it needs to fund its cancer services. Macmillan support people with cancer and their families in a number of ways, including by providing specialist nurses who work within the NHS, giving grants to cancer patients with money problems and running a nurse-run support line. Community funding on offer in Wyre A share of £60,000 is on offer to people in Wyre who want to make a difference in their communities.
W
yre Council’s Shaping Your Neighbourhood initiative has been extended for a third year and bids are now being accepted for community projects that will improve enterprise, health or engagement in the borough. The council is looking for creative ideas that will make a real long term difference to local people. It could be something simple like provision of equipment to enhance towns and villages, improvements to existing services or facilities that will encourage more people to use them or new ways to reach people and bring communities together. Shaping Your Neighbourhood was launched in 2012 to allow people to get involved in improving their neighbourhoods and over £450,000 in grants has already been awarded across Wyre. Funding has gone towards an assortment of projects including dementia and bereavement support programmes, sport and play equipment and refurbishment of community buildings. The Willow Garden Project in Fleetwood, a charity that supports adults with disabilities and mental health problems, received a grant of £3,000 to build an observatory in its sensory garden. Pamela Laird from the project commented: ‘The observatory compliments the garden perfectly and I know that it will be very much appreciated by our service users 62
and the local community. The support we received through Shaping Your Neighbourhood has been brilliant and the links we have established will no doubt help to spread the word to the local community to explain what the Willow Garden Project is all about. Thank you so much for supporting us.’ Jane Littlewood from visitcleveleys.co.uk secured £5,000 towards restoring a seaside clock shelter in Cleveleys. She said: ‘If you don’t like something in your local community, you really do have the power to do something about it, and a Shaping Your Neighbourhood grant might help you to pay for it. If you’ve not been involved with anything like this before you need to be clear about what you want to achieve, how you will do it and how much it will cost before you apply but from there it’s simple and officers at Wyre will help you. I was astonished at the community support and pride that the project created.’ Wyre is split into six neighbourhood areas: Cleveleys, Thornton, Fleetwood, Poulton, Rural East (Garstang and surrounding villages) and Rural West (Over Wyre and Great Eccleston). To add to our woes, our Reserve Team also lie at the foot of their league. This is one football double we do not want to achieve. It all sounds depressing I know and believe me everyone connected with the club is feeling down but if the worst happens we will dust ourselves down and look to come back next season stronger than ever.
Everything that could have gone wrong this season has. We had a home against new champions Charnock Richard abandoned 3 minutes into added time with just seconds remaining. 1-0 up and safely in mid table, the portents looked promising. Then, whilst shaping up to take the goal kick which will herald the final whistle, our goalkeeper is taken ill. Game abandoned, result doesn’t stand and several months later the replayed game is lost by a wide margin. That game sums it up really but what can you do, except fight back and restore the club to former glories. That is what we are all determined to do. We have a superb junior section, some very promising young players who will have learnt a lot during this arduous
