Hello and a huge welcome to Fleetwood for Tram Sunday 2013.

Officers and Committee of Tram Sunday Fleetwood Chamber of Trade & Commerce Chairman, Derek Eaton Secretary, Shaun Hartley (CIM DipM) Treasurer, Martin Wigley Membership Secretary, Robert Brown

Hello and welcome to Fleetwood. The enthusiasts and volunteers who live in the area of Fleetwood are both proud and honoured to be able to put on this event for you and your family to enjoy. This year will be the 28th running of the event which is known locally as Tram Sunday. The event ran for 25 consecutive years before major tram line replacement meant that we could not hold the 2010 meeting. The committee who organise Tram Sunday do it for no reward as this is not for any one individual but is for the town of Fleetwood. We are a mixture of local traders and businesses, retired workers, volunteers and enthusiasts and is enjoyable to be part of. Tram Sunday was initially only going to be a one off to celebrate a centenary in Blackpool but here we are some 29 years later still going strong, although the committee has seen some changes of personal. You will be amazed by the different forms of entertainment that will be on offer this year. We will have an area which the children can come along and do karaoke, all free, dancers, local schools, clubs and societies etc will be here as will fairground rides and a wide selection of vehicles, large and small. The main sponsor this year has again been Chris Allen Garages who are the main dealers for Ford and Mazda. Thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers, marshals and the committee without who Tram Sunday could not be staged. Have a wonderful day and make a date in your diary for next year’s event which is on Sunday 20th July 2014. Robert Brown Chairman

History of Tram Sunday The Fleetwood Festival of Transport, or “Tram Sunday” (as it is more commonly and affectionately known), has now been staged for over a quarter of a century and is fairly comprehensively acknowledged as both the largest event to hit Fleetwood every year, as well as arguably the biggest FREE event in the North West, with up to 40,000 visitors enjoying a free family fun day out every July. But how did it all, start? As with most things, it started small and was actually intended to just be only a “one off” event. In 1885 Blackpool started its pioneering electric tramway and so by 1985, it was time to celebrate its centenary. A list of events was devised and in conjunction with the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland. They suggested a vehicle event using the last original street tramway in the UK, in Fleetwood, so it could look like a British street from the 1950’s (or before). With classic vehicles rubbing shoulders with working veteran tramcars (visiting Blackpool that year), as well as some of Blackpool Corporation Transport’s existing fleet (that were worthy of being museum pieces themselves). It would have the roads that the tramway runs down, closed to normal traffic and it was then filled with exhibits from the museum, such as the famous “Pope-mobile”, as well as other classic vehicles, stalls, entertainments and other exhibits to further enhance the event. Held in the town centre, everything would be on hard standing and it would be free! In total about 150 vehicles were organised on the day and despite it being a very bad year for weather, the 3 main events in that year’s centenary programme, a depot open day in Blackpool, the centenary day itself in the September and the Fleetwood event enjoyed great weather. The crowd on the day was about the 12,000 mark, so whilst small compared to today’s figures, for a first and theoretically only event, the numbers were very encouraging and the event was considered to be a great success. Once over, as it was part of a centenary event, it wasn’t proposed to be being run again any time soon. However, fate has a way of presenting itself sometimes and that was the case here. By a quirk of fate, the Victorian “new town” of Fleetwood was commenced in 1836, thereby its 150th anniversary was to be in the next year, 1986. A Fleetwood based committee set up by residents who were very proud of their town’s history, started to consider what events could be run to celebrate such an anniversary. They had it suggested to them, that perhaps the “tram do in the street”, could be run again and as several of the “Fleetwood 150” committee had been there on the day and enjoyed it, it was agreed that it should be looked into. Two organisations were asked to see about putting together an event using their vehicle contacts and the committee would sort out the entertainments and the stalls. One was the Leyland museum again and the other, the newly set up, Blackpool Vehicle Preservation Group, that had run their first proper, but very successful, vehicle rally on Blackpool’s Middle Walk Promenade on the Tramway Centenary day, the previous September. All was going fine until about 6 weeks before the event, when at a committee meeting, it was disclosed that the Leyland museum had dropped the project. Therefore, with very little time to go, the whole vital vehicle entry part of the event was now firmly shouldered by a group, that whilst very enthusiastic, had only run one event to date. However, the group, to their credit, grasped the nettle and carried on getting in entries to try to fill the event. They succeeded and indeed managed to actually exceed the previous year’s vehicle attendee numbers. Visitor attendance numbers were up as well, with an estimated 26,000 on the day and again, whilst cloudier than in 1985, the weather held again and an enjoyable free day out was had by all. Brought Up To Date Therefore, it then came to the fact that Fleetwood had by now a free family day out that had somewhat put the town firmly on the map. And so, even though the two events so far had been part of two separate and individual “one off” celebrations, the question was asked, should this totally unique and popular event be allowed to be consigned to the history books? Or should it be allowed to run on its own merits every year, as against waiting for another celebratory year to come along. It was unanimously decided that it should be an annual event and accordingly a committee was set up that would ensure that the event could and would be run annually to keep “Tram Sunday” and Fleetwood, very firmly “on the map”. Over the years we have had challenges and changes. For example in 2000, Blackpool Transport, on whom we rely for the trams, had a staff dispute. Such was the known pull of visitor’s numbers by our event that of the few strike days the unions chose to withdraw their labour to have the most effect. Our event’s day was chosen as one of them. However, we rose to the challenge by asking visiting bus exhibit owners, if they would be prepared to operate a free bus service from Blackpool into Fleetwood all day and enough did to ensure the crowds were as big, if not bigger, than the year before. This did however admittedly lead to probably the biggest change to the event since its inception, as on the day the trams were not in attendance to run through the event as had always been the case. It was then found that it was so much easier to park vehicles, as the tram tracks did not need to be kept clear that year. With the street improvements bringing ever more restrictions on parking with ever more street furniture and build outs into the carriageway, any method of offsetting that year on year reduction in available space was welcomed. Following an enforced “year off” in 2010, whilst major tramway infrastructure along the entire Tram Sunday site was replaced to prepare for the new tramway, the original organisation decided after a very creditable 25 years, to retire.

success and experience of some members. This newly invigorated and professional new team now best assures this unique event’s future” The event now looks forward to many more years so that hopefully this is really just the start of the history of it and the new “Flexity 2 “ trams herald a new era in the tramway’s history in which “Tram Sunday” plays it’s part each year. So we really do feel that the event is as strong now as it has ever been, with the town itself, the local council and many others in the area and further afield, knowing just how important this event is to visitors and the residents alike. We hope that this gives you something of the flavour of this totally unique and very popular event and its humble beginnings. One of our committee years ago was getting quite hassled on the day. It was a lovely hot summer’s day and eventually, with being needed here, there and everywhere, he just stood for a second and thought to himself, “why on earth do I do this?” Next to him was a dad showing an absolutely fascinated small son (probably aged 6 or 7) how nearly all buses like this one in front of them, used to have open entrances at the back of them and someone called a “conductor” stood there. The child smiled from ear to ear and said. “Wow, Dad, I’ve never seen that before. What a fun day out. I’m happy you brought me here.” That child had answered his question... that’s why he did it!! If you haven’t ever visited us before, or it’s been a while, do try to keep the middle Sunday in July free and come and experience what must be one of the greatest free days out in the UK, or perhaps rekindle your interest in it. “Fleetwood Festival of Transport (Tram Sunday)”- “Our past, in our present, for our future”.

David Evans

For 2011 and beyond the Fleetwood Festival Of Transport C.I.C (a charitable company born of the Fleetwood Chamber Of Trade & Commerce) was formed to run the event. The new Committee (an almost completely new team) was set up, that achieved an incredible event that year saying it was that organisations very first effort, whilst building on the past committee’s 12

“Cleveleys Writers - Writers for Charity”

is a friendly group of all abilities, from beginners to published authors. They meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month in the Lounge of the Park Club on West Drive, Cleveleys to enjoy writing in all its forms. “Cleveleys Writers” compile Anthologies of their stories and poems which are then sold to raise money for a chosen local Charity. They also run an Annual “Lyric Competition” involving many local Primary and High schools in the Wyre area. The winners receive a unique CD of their lyrics set to music by our two talented musicians at a special Presentation.

“Wordsmiths with a Song”

is a sub-group who enjoy performing throughout the Wyre and Fylde area by reading their own Poetry (some happy, some sad, some humorous and some plainly mad!) alongside two guitar strumming singers. They visit local Care Homes and the Trinity Hospice on a regular basis to entertain and amuse. The “Wordsmiths” were recently ‘Artists in Residence’ at a Wyre Borough Council event at The Marine Hall, Fleetwood. This Tram Sunday will find the “Wordsmiths” performing at the Civic Luncheon at The North Euston Hotel, Fleetwood, and later in the Wyre Borough Council’s Hospitality Marquee.

Static Display Trams Brush “Railcoach” No, 631 Green and Cream Single Decker Tramcar. Part of a large batch of new trams and corresponding buses introduced by the very forward thinking and then newly appointed, General Manager of Blackpool Corporation Transport, Mr Walter Luff, in-between 1934 and 37 which at the time, made Blackpool’s fleet among the most modern and streamlined anywhere in the world, Brush Car No. 631 was part of an order of 20 cars built in 1937 by Brush in Loughborough. All of the batch that survived to the new tramway reopening in 2011 have been saved for preservation with 631 currently being the only one kept by Blackpool Transport. 631 has recently been partially restored in the traditional green and cream livery of the 1950’s and 60’s and next year the department will remove even more of the recent modernisations carried out on the tram, to return it more toward it’s original condition.

Blackpool “Balloon” Tramcar No. 706 “Princess Alice” Green and Cream Double Deck Open Top Tramcar. Again from the original order of Walter Luff, these tramcars were built more locally by English Electric at Preston, which still survives as Alstom. They arrived in 2 batches. Nos 700 -712 were delivered as Open toppers as shown here, whereas 713 - 726 arrived with fully enclosed roofs. During WW2 the early batch were covered over with roofs. In 1980, 706 had a dreadful head on collision with sister 705 at the Pleasure Beach and the 2 cars sat for many years in the bus yard awaiting their fate. Shortly before the tramway’s centenary in 1985, suggestions for heritage trams from other former systems to be borrowed to help celebrate the centenary were asked for, but a current member of the Fleetwood Festival of Transport suggested that reconverting the, by then, very sad looking 705 or 706 to their original condition might be a better alternative. As it happened other “foreign” cars were still borrowed as well, but also the suggestion for 706, being slightly less badly damaged of the two, was quickly taken up. In 1985 Princess Alice, The Duchess of Gloucester was asked to then uniquely, give her name to a tramcar and newly restored 706 was chosen, an honour which she continues to carry to this day. 20

Trams On service from Fisherman’s Walk to Thornton Gate:

English Electric Open “ Boat” cars 600 and 230 Green and Cream Single Decker Open Top Tramcars Built by English Electric in Preston in 1934, these 2 sister cars, were also part of Walter Luff’s “5 Year Programme” of upgrading the tramway and bus service fleet. 600 was the prototype and differed only slightly from the 11 other production examples in having slightly shallower body panels, earning this car the nickname of “Little Willie”. When the inland routes closed in the early 1960’s, the fleet of “Boats” was reduced to just 8 and were shortly renumbered to 600 - 607. Always among the most popular trams, 5 still survive with Blackpool Transport today and over time, it is hoped that they will all be refurbished and re-enter service. Former car 604 was named “George Formby O.B. E.” in June 2012, was repainted and given her original pre1968 fleet number of 230. Sister car 602, which isn’t here today, is undergoing refurbishment and is to be shortly recommissioned wearing a pre 1933 red and white livery, reminiscent of the livery carried by the “Routemasters” run by Blackpool Transport in early deregulation days in the mid 1980’s. This colour scheme was in fact the Corporation’s early fleet livery until Ribble requested that it be changed so not to confuse passengers with the red livery carried by their buses, that by the 1930’s had started to expand into Blackpool. If weather dictates, there may be a replacement of the “Boats” by traditional “Balloon” double deckers, similar to 706, but possibly in differing liveries. Several of the original 1934 “Balloons” have been recently upgraded to be able to service the new higher DDA compliant, tram stop platforms and thereby in busy times, augment the new “Flexity2” cars that normally perform the core service. Most carry a variation of the “Flexity” council inspired maroon and white corporate livery. These may form the replacement for the “Boats”, should weather require them to be needed.
