Hello and a huge welcome to Fleetwood for Tram Sunday 2014.
O fficer s an d C ommittee of Tr am Su n day Fl eetwo o d C ham ber o f Trade & C o m m erce Chairman, Derek Eaton Secretary, Derek Eaton Treasurer, Martin Wigley Membership Secretary, Robert Brown
This year’s Tram Sunday will be the biggest event ever staged in the town. Not content with one parade at 11 o’clock, there will be a second at 3.30pm. Our Partners, Leftcoast will be bringing a vast array of Art based themes which will make the event bigger and better than before. More about them later in the programme. We are a small group of volunteers who try to bring the whole town together and are very thankful to the businesses for their support and understanding in this. To keep Fleetwood firmly on the tourist map is paramount in helping the Fylde coast economy. There have been difficult times lately with the loss of the fishing industry, the Sealink Ferry and the Tram upheaval but there has been some positives with the success of the local football club, Fleetwood Town who have just been promoted to the 3rd tier of the football league. This all goes to help the local economy with increased footfall. Also happening this year is the very first Fleetwood Scarecrow Festival which will run for 2 weeks starting on the 7th July with the judging taking place on Tram Sunday. All that is left to say is a huge thank you to all the volunteers who give up their time freely and the sponsors who donate so generously.
Have a wonderful day and we look forward to seeing you at next year’s event which is on Sunday 19th July 2015. Robert Brown Chairman

History of Tram Sunday The Fleetwood Festival of Transport, or “Tram Sunday” (as it is more commonly and affectionately known), has now been staged for over a quarter of a century and is fairly comprehensively acknowledged as both the largest event to hit Fleetwood every year, as well as arguably the biggest FREE event in the North West, with up to 40,000 visitors enjoying a free family fun day out every July. But how did it all, start? As with most things, it started small and was actually intended to just be only a “one off” event. In 1885 Blackpool started its pioneering electric tramway and so by 1985, it was time to celebrate its centenary. A list of events was devised and in conjunction with the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland. They suggested a vehicle event using the last original street tramway in the UK, in Fleetwood, so it could look like a British street from the 1950’s (or before). With classic vehicles rubbing shoulders with working veteran tramcars (visiting Blackpool that year), as well as some of Blackpool Corporation Transport’s existing fleet (that were worthy of being museum pieces themselves). It would have the roads that the tramway runs down, closed to normal traffic and it was then filled with exhibits from the museum, such as the famous “Pope-mobile”, as well as other classic vehicles, stalls, entertainments and other exhibits to further enhance the event. Held in the town centre, everything would be on hard standing and it would be free! In total about 150 vehicles were organised on the day and despite it being a very bad year for weather, the 3 main events in that year’s centenary programme, a depot open day in Blackpool, the centenary day itself in the September and the Fleetwood event enjoyed great weather. The crowd on the day was about the 12,000 mark, so whilst small compared to today’s figures, for a first and theoretically only event, the numbers were very encouraging and the event was considered to be a great success. Once over, as it was part of a centenary event, it wasn’t proposed to be being run again any time soon. However, fate has a way of presenting itself sometimes and that was the case here. By a quirk of fate, the Victorian “new town” of Fleetwood was commenced in 1836, thereby its 150th anniversary was to be in the next year, 1986. A Fleetwood based committee set up by residents who were very proud of their town’s history, started to consider what events could be run to celebrate such an anniversary. They had it suggested to them, that perhaps the “tram do in the street”, could be run again and as several of the “Fleetwood 150” committee had been there on the day and enjoyed it, it was agreed that it should be looked into. Two organisations were asked to see about putting together an event using their vehicle contacts and the committee would sort out the entertainments and the stalls. One was the Leyland museum again and the other, the newly set up, Blackpool Vehicle Preservation Group, that had run their first proper, but very successful, vehicle rally on Blackpool’s Middle Walk Promenade on the Tramway Centenary day, the previous September. All was going fine until about 6 weeks before the event, when at a committee meeting, it was disclosed that the Leyland museum had dropped the project. Therefore, with very little time to go, the whole vital vehicle entry part of the event was now firmly shouldered by a group, that whilst very enthusiastic, had only run one event to date. However, the group, to their credit, grasped the nettle and carried on getting in entries to try to fill the event. They succeeded and indeed managed to actually exceed the previous year’s vehicle attendee numbers. Visitor attendance numbers were up as well, with an estimated 26,000 on the day and again, whilst cloudier than in 1985, the weather held again and an enjoyable free day out was had by all. Brought Up To Date Therefore, it then came to the fact that Fleetwood had by now a free family day out that had somewhat put the town firmly on the map. And so, even though the two events so far had been part of two separate and individual “one off” celebrations, the question was asked, should this totally unique and popular event be allowed to be consigned to the history books? Or should it be allowed to run on its own merits every year, as against waiting for another celebratory year to come along. It was unanimously decided that it should be an annual event and accordingly a committee was set up that would ensure that the event could and would be run annually to keep “Tram Sunday” and Fleetwood, very firmly “on the map”. Over the years we have had challenges and changes. For example in 2000, Blackpool Transport, on whom we rely for the trams, had a staff dispute. Such was the known pull of visitor’s numbers by our event that of the few strike days the unions chose to withdraw their labour to have the most effect. Our event’s day was chosen as one of them. However, we rose to the challenge by asking visiting bus exhibit owners, if they would be prepared to operate a free bus service from Blackpool into Fleetwood all day and enough did to ensure the crowds were as big, if not bigger, than the year before. This did however admittedly lead to probably the biggest change to the event since its inception, as on the day the trams were not in attendance to run through the event as had always been the case. It was then found that it was so much easier to park vehicles, as the tram tracks did not need to be kept clear that year. With the street improvements bringing ever more restrictions on parking with ever more street furniture and build outs into the carriageway, any method of offsetting that year on year reduction in available space was welcomed. Following an enforced “year off” in 2010, whilst major tramway infrastructure along the entire Tram Sunday site was replaced to prepare for the new tramway, the original organisation decided after a very creditable 25 years, to retire.
success and experience of some members. This newly invigorated and professional new team now best assures this unique event’s future” The event now looks forward to many more years so that hopefully this is really just the start of the history of it and the new “Flexity 2 “ trams herald a new era in the tramway’s history in which “Tram Sunday” plays it’s part each year. So we really do feel that the event is as strong now as it has ever been, with the town itself, the local council and many others in the area and further afield, knowing just how important this event is to visitors and the residents alike. We hope that this gives you something of the flavour of this totally unique and very popular event and its humble beginnings. One of our committee years ago was getting quite hassled on the day. It was a lovely hot summer’s day and eventually, with being needed here, there and everywhere, he just stood for a second and thought to himself, “why on earth do I do this?” Next to him was a dad showing an absolutely fascinated small son (probably aged 6 or 7) how nearly all buses like this one in front of them, used to have open entrances at the back of them and someone called a “conductor” stood there. The child smiled from ear to ear and said. “Wow, Dad, I’ve never seen that before. What a fun day out. I’m happy you brought me here.” That child had answered his question... that’s why he did it!! If you haven’t ever visited us before, or it’s been a while, do try to keep the middle Sunday in July free and come and experience what must be one of the greatest free days out in the UK, or perhaps rekindle your interest in it. “Fleetwood Festival of Transport (Tram Sunday)”- “Our past, in our present, for our future”.
David Evans
For 2011 and beyond the Fleetwood Festival Of Transport C.I.C (a charitable company born of the Fleetwood Chamber Of Trade & Commerce) was formed to run the event. The new Committee (an almost completely new team) was set up, that achieved an incredible event that year saying it was that organisations very first effort, whilst building on the past committee’s 12

LeftCoast This year for the first time LeftCoast are working in partnership with Fleetwood Festival of Transport and Wyre Council to add a new arts element to Tram Sunday, which is set to wow audiences with street theatre, workshops and spectacular performances themed around transport.
If you’re feeling energetic you can take a ride of the Cyclographic-Splodge-a-Matic Spin Painting Machine created by artist Shane Johnstone. This human powered live painting machine is the perfect way to create unique spiral paintings in the style of the popular 1970s vintage toy ‘Spiromatic’.
A mechanical parade will sweep through Fleetwood, packed with eccentric human powered vehicles and kinetic contraptions from Rag and Bone, mechanical creatures including Hieronymus the poorly hippo and his doctor from Thingumajig Theatre and pop up musical stages on the back of boom bikes.
For those of a musical persuasion toy have plenty to choose from with Dan Fox’s boom bikes providing pop up stages which will appear at various locations throughout the day giving bands and performers from the area a chance to bring their music to your ears. As well as this three part acapella girl group, The Bobbysocks, will be performing in and around the festival with an eclectic blend of swing, boogie-woogie and alternative country with a transport theme, sure to keep you dancing in the streets.
The Marine Hall will play host to a cinematic exploration into the future of transport with three large projections taking over the space. Artist Pablo Perrezarate will use a selection of audio gathered from the residents of Fleetwood alongside experimental sound techniques, musical compositions and digital animations to give us this unique glimpse into how we might be getting about in the next millennium and beyond.
The climactic finale to SpareParts will see dance company Motionhouse delight onlookers with their spectacular performance Traction on the beach behind the Marine Hall. The show which lasts twenty minutes was originally created in 2011 for the Bullring in Birmingham and is a Transformers-esque performance that sees There’s plenty of ways to participate too with six dancers and three JCB diggers dancing Blackpool based artists Boz Phillips and together in a high octane celebration of the Mr D doing a graffiti live paint to create an harmony between humans and machines. installation based on the New York Subway, and Vanessa Card creating paper lanterns Transport yourself there. on the day which will feature as part of the SpareParts parade.

The Poulton & Wyre Railway Society & Trust
Progress at Burn Naze Arguably, Fleetwood owes it’s very existence to the railway as it was the brainchild of Sir Peter Hesketh Fleetwood as an integral part of his “new town” of Fleetwood in 1840. ( Or “Wyretown” or even “New Liverpool” as it was nearly called!)
as Dr Beeching personally maintained that all dock connections should be kept open. But BR ignored this and then by 1999 the remaining freight traffic also got transferred to road haulage. The line was then “mothballed” and awaited it’s ultimate fate.
In fact until 1856, going via Fleetwood was the only way of getting to Scotland as no loco until then, had been built that was powerful enough to conquer Shap in the Lakes, with a fully loaded train.
In 2007 a plan to create a double width cycle path on the now “mothballed” line, met with fierce opposition at a public meeting and from that, the PWR was created. We now boast just under 200 members and aim in the next year or so, to in some form, reopen part of the 6 mile route from Poulton to Fleetwood via Thornton and Burn Naze. We then aim to reopen more sections until the line is fully reopened. At first it will be a heritage/ tourist railway, but in time, our aim is to be able to operate commuter and even freight services along this historic and important line once again, thereby adding extra tourism, regeneration and investment potential to the communities along the line.
It was therefore for many years, the NORTHern end of The EUSTON railway line.. hence the railway hotel at this end is known as...The North Euston Hotel. The Fleetwood railway line fell back a bit in popularity when Shap was eventually conquered, but enough port traffic had by then been established to enable it to still prosper. It was also, as far as we know, to be the first railway line anywhere in the world, that went to the seaside. However, over more recent years the railway sadly lost out to other modes of transport and by 1970 BR decided it was unprofitable for a passenger service to be maintained. It was NOT however a Beeching cut
Fleetwood is now allegedly known to be the largest town by population in the UK, that has no railway and so that is a record that we are happy to help Fleetwood to lose. If you would like to help us to get Fleetwood “back on track”, see us on our stand on Corner of Warren Street and Lord Street or visit our website on www.pwrs.org. We have working parties every Saturday and Wednesday mornings from 9am till 12 at Thornton Station on Victoria Road East and on the former ICI plant now known as NPL, so if you’d like to lend a hand, we would love to see you. We at the PWR hope you have a really great day here at “Tram Sunday”.

Contrary to popular belief, the tramway we know today, wasn’t always just one continuous line from Blackpool to up here in Fleetwood. Until 1920 it was split into 2 totally separate sections at The Gynn. The Northern section to Fleetwood was operated by a private company called The Blackpool & Fleetwood Electric Tramroad Co and it had it’s own style of trams, one of which is Box Car No. 40. 40 was built exactly 100 years ago by Milnes & Co. of Birkenhead in 1914 and looks very like the trams you can still see running on the Manx Electric Railway on the Isle of Man. However that is perhaps not so surprising as the same company that built and operated the Fleetwood tramway, had previously already built the Manx one, namely the M.E.R. which as we say, still runs today. Box 40 survived by becoming a works tram after Blackpool Corporation bought out the Tramroad in Jan 1920 and survived in this role long enough to become rescued and restored as part of the Blackpool Tramway’s 75th anniversary celebrations in the September of 1960. 40 then went to the National Tramway Museum in Derbyshire, before coming back to Blackpool, via the Heaton Park Tramway in Manchester.
Box 40 operating at Manchester’s Heaton Park Tramway in September 1986
Box 40 running through the 1997 Fleetwood Transport Festival or Tram Sunday
Box 40 has recently been refurbished by Blackpool Transport for potentially another decade of operation here and is being relaunched into service here today for your enjoyment.
