News that Gleeds has confirmed its appointment as cost manager for the construction of a new ÂŁ55 million cruise ship terminal at Southamptonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Western Docks. INTERIOR DESIGN OF CHIC BURGER JOINT CREATED BY H2R DESIGN

H2R DESIGN was appointed as the interior design firm for Surround in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The awardwinning design firm was tasked to create a fun and playful space with sophistication for the foodies of Riyadh to gather, have great food and to really celebrate life together. Primarily a chic burger joint, with other indulgent quality foods, the interior design of Surround is colourful, vibrant and an engaging space full of quirky design features which displays the character of the space. The brief was to create a fun and easy-going dining concept, where friends and like-minded people get together, catch up and relax over good food and good company. The venue is conceptually divided into two spaces: the workshop (open kitchen) and the playground - the restaurant area, depicting the recess scene at school, where groups of friends would congregate to catch up while enjoying a bite. H2R Design worked closely with the client to execute their vision for Surround which resulted in the minimal yet playful restaurant inspiring the sense of community. “We focused on making Surround a spirited ‘playground’ for adults, whilst retaining the elegant side. This can be seen in the wall grid, taking us back to school graph paper, with quirky sketches and ‘doodles’ that create a nostalgic language. As there is so much boldness on the higher level of the space with pink taking prominence, we wanted to keep it quite cool and neutral as we worked our way down”, explained Hasan Roomi, co-founder of H2R Design.

“Our methodology was to combine the different ways of harmonising the playfulness with the cultured. We didn’t want to scare people off by being too childlike, and we didn’t want it to feel too sophisticated either. The pink perimeter paint was initially alarming for the client, as it was so protruding. But once all the other materials and furniture coalesced, they loved it! As designers, we always have to remind everyone to be patient until the end, to really see the design as one holistic experience and to believe in it,” he continued. The interior design features distinct use of materials and unusual amalgamations. For example, concrete micro topping was incorporated as a neutral canvas, and the space was built up with different tiles, marble and white, cut in different shapes and angles. Brave colours in the furniture on the higher level form the sense of boldness and fun, while the use of wood and rattan add a bit of temperateness. The bold colours were influenced by the original branding, in pinks and greens. H2R Design aimed to develop the identity of Surround holistically between the brand identity and the location. The space encourages each visitor to use it differently, as if it were an adult ‘recess’ area where guests can sit in a big group, a pair or as an individual. www.h2rdesign.com

PANORAMIC VIEWS OF LONDON FROM 'THE HAMPSTEAD PENTHOUSE' BY UNGAR ARCHITECTS

London-based architecture practice, Ungar Architects, has completed the creation of a breathtaking new penthouse in Hampstead, with panoramic views across the city. The clients, a young family of three, welcomed the transformation of their home with open arms, as an opportunity to create a peaceful retreat above the city - an â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;urban treehouseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; - which they could use as a living room and adapt to use as a pilates studio when required. The project is situated in Hampstead, North London - atop a block of flats built in the early '90s. The clients live in the top floor, three bedroom flat and own the large flat roof above, affording the opportunity to extend upwards.

Ungar Architects was appointed to create a rooftop extension to take advantage of the views and to create a large patio area around it. The challenge was to take advantage of the views outwards towards London but to minimise the views towards it. Its prominent location in relation to the other flats in the development also meant that the rear of the structure needed to be solid, but the other three sides could be glazed.

Its set back and height were also critical in relation to views from further afield. The final design is a floating curved structure which assists with the set back, and softens the visual impact of the extension. Ventilated zinc is used across the roof with minimum falls to keep the edge profile as thin as possible. The steel structure was welded and test on site in order that the materials could be reasonably hoisted to the roof at fifth floor level. With sweeping vistas on three sides, the fully enclosed rooftop lounge and surrounding patio adds extra light, space and beauty to this property and a much-needed place for retreat and contemplation during these uncertain times. DMFK COMPLETES LATEST WORKSPACE FOR THE OFFICE GROUP IN CANARY WHARFâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S ONE CANADA SQUARE

The Office Group (TOG) has opened its first flexible workspace in Canary Wharf, located on the 7th, 8th and 9th floors within the iconic One Canada Square tower, following a comprehensive, stylish refurbishment by dMFK Architects. This marks TOG’s 39th workspace now open in the UK. TOG occupies 80,000 sq ft across three floors of the prestigious 50-storey office building, which forms the centrepiece of the renowned Canary Wharf estate. Designed by the late César Pelli and completed in 1991, the landmark One Canada Square skyscraper stands at 235 metres high and is currently the UK’s second tallest building, holding a striking position in the London skyline. TOG worked with long-time collaborator dMFK to transform the three floors into an inviting, light-filled space that offers members flexible offices to cater for companies ranging from four to 1,000 employees. The floors now occupied by TOG have been reconfigured to provide numerous design-led meeting rooms – all with a bespoke feel, communal lounge and recharge areas, breakout spaces and phone booths. Members will also benefit from the inclusion of a fitness studio by TOG’s inhouse partner, Manor, including a dedicated Peloton bike area, and a Maple & Co café serving seasonal and locally-sourced nutritious meals and bites throughout the day. (cont...) dMFK’s reinvigoration of the TOG space in One Canada Square has focused on the creation of linear avenues – connecting the directional views from each side of the building – to flood each of the floors with light, illuminating even the centremost parts of the building, bringing the spaces to life. The three floors are connected by a dramatic new staircase to create natural circulation amongst TOG members and provide access to the full range of amenities. Each floorplate has been carefully set out to create a sequence of different spaces that feel intimate and warm, through the considered use of texture and craft within the upholstery, as well as joinery and floor finishes.

In designing the interior concept, dMFK drew inspiration from the mid-century era of Phillip Johnson and Mies Van der Rohe, a nostalgic reference to the heroic period of American corporate interior design. Stylistically, the new interior references the materiality and tonal quality of the original building foyer, using rich figured terrazzo, mid-toned sapele timber panelling and painted metalwork to create a welcoming, tactile and crafted working environment. Extensive planting, use of custom lighting designed by dMFK and a bold colour palette of deep blue, soft pink, smoky green and terracotta contribute to the mid-century style of design, creating warm pockets of space within the linear avenues that emphasise the geometry of the common spaces whilst activating the depth of the plan. GLEEDS ON TRACK TO DELIVER NEW SOUTHAMPTON CRUISE TERMINAL IN 2021 International property and construction consultancy Gleeds has confirmed its appointment as cost manager for the construction of a new £55 million cruise ship terminal at Southampton’s Western Docks. The scheme is the result of a strategic partnership between Associated British Ports (ABP), MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and will be the

port’s fifth dedicated facility for cruise passengers. Heralded as being next-generation ready, once complete the terminal will be able to accommodate the world’s largest ships, capable of carrying 6,000 passengers each. It will feature a host of sustainable features, including the use of glulam beams and roof-mounted photovoltaic panels.

The building will also boast ‘Shore Power connectivity’ which will enable suitably equipped vessels to plug in to a local power supply while in port, rather than using onboard generators. Having received a grant from the government’s Getting Building Fund, works on the 11,695m2 build began earlier this year and have continued at pace despite the challenges presented

by the outbreak of Covid-19. The fibre reinforced ground floor slab and steel frame have already been installed, with curtain walling and cladding now well underway. A link bridge for the connection of ships to the shoreline has been created in a bid to ensure that the facility is fully operational for the holiday season. www.gleeds.com

LANES GROUP PLC Drainage engineers from Lanes Group plc have used new pipe cleaning technology to solve persistent drain blockage problems at a nuclear power station. Their success means station workers can be confident that the drains flow freely so they do not have to use contingency measures to take wastewater to a radioactive effluent treatment plant. NEW SMALL AND EFFICIENT HUMIDIFIER FROM CONDAIR Condair is launching the Condair RM, a new low capacity resistive steam humidifier that can provide up to 8kg of steam to a duct. This level of output is ideal for applications like CRAC units in data centres, MRI suites in hospitals and high-end residential humidification. It is also ideal for offering zonal humidity control in branch ducts of buildings, like galleries or multi-occupancy offices, where a specific area of the building requires an independently managed humidity level. The Condair RM reduces the cost of consumables, when compared to electrode boiler humidifiers, as it incorporates a boiling chamber that can be cleaned to remove lime scale, rather than needing disposable plastic cylinders. It is also, therefore, a more sustainable solution. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION – ADSA LIVE STREAMS TRAINING FOR QUALITY STANDARDS What the COVID crisis has taught us, is that we can do things differently. Technology has enabled many of us to work from home, meet with colleagues remotely and deliver services in a way that previously we had not considered. Throughout these unprecedented times, the automatic door industry has produced innovative adaptations and new solutions for entrance requirements enabling us to adapt to this ‘new normal’. Meanwhile installers and service engineers have found themselves at the cutting edge: assisting the front line by maintaining the effective operation of critical buildings – from hospitals to supermarkets. The Automatic Door Suppliers Association (ADSA) continued to work during lockdown to provide much-needed support for member organisations and their employees. External stakeholders also contacted the association for advice and assistance during this difficult time. A fundamental part of ADSA’s role is helping set standards and train those working in the industry to deliver quality service, mindful of legal requirements and good practice. Traditionally, ADSA training has taken place in the classroom but the COVID pandemic and the ensuing lockdown meant that this was not achievable, or desirable. It was considered vital that training delivery be maintained and a solution was found that would emulate the quality of classroom delivery providing delegates with an in-depth knowledge of all standards to determine the safe operation, design and specification of powered pedestrian doors.

Said ADSA CEO Ken Price: “It was essential that we continued to offer training during lockdown but traditional classroom delivery was out of the question. We quickly needed to develop an online alternative that would offer the same quality and interaction as being there in person. I had sat through, and presented, a number of online seminars during lockdown, and I was

convinced that digital was the way forward, but I felt that existing platforms were a little one- dimensional. To replicate the quality of our classroom delivery and stimulate engagement, we arrived at the idea of producing a televisionstyle broadcast.” ADSA identified an experienced partner - RED Shell Productions which had significant television production experience. The company used a multi-camera feed, with live mixing and an interactive web platform to help ADSA deliver dynamic content with clear advantages. The digital delivery saves members extra travel and hotel costs and ensures their safety during the continuation of the pandemic.

Feedback on the courses has been extremely positive. There has even been a 100 per cent pass mark – the achievement being taken by Nigel Cove, of dormakaba, who was the first to do this through the live stream training.

Said Ken: “Our first live streaming event took place mid-June and monthly courses are now scheduled until February 2021. “The response has been extremely positive with members keen to applaud our proactive approach and work with us to make it a success.” The content for the courses was redeveloped from its original 1.5 days duration and adapted for online consumption, introducing breaks to maintain focus and encourage participation. “We also had to identify a way to maintain the security and integrity of our examination process. We were able to achieve this through emailed links to each delegate for an online examination which had to be undertaken within a set period,” added Ken.

In addition to the live sessions, there has been an uptake of 30 per cent in the use of the ADSA Academy which provides more than 100 online courses – the majority free to employees of member organisations. The Academy has been a lifeline for many individuals including those who initially found themselves furloughed during the lockdown period. With time on their hands, and an opportunity to learn at no additional cost, 8200 training packages have been accessed this year to date. HEAT PUMPS SUDDENLY HOT....... LG has welcomed the news from the Prime Minister recently as he outlined his 10-point plan for a Green Industrial Revolution for 250,000 jobs. This included a target to deploy 600,000 heat pumps per year by 2028, a oneyear extension to the Green Homes Grant and that new build housing will ban gas boilers by 2025. LG’s Heating Manager for the UK and Ireland is Andy Hooper: “We’re delighted at the level of interest in the Therma V range we have available here in the UK,” he continued. “In particular we have seen huge interest in the Therma V R32 Monobloc unit which requires no F-Gas expertise at the installation stage. It’s a very simple alternative to a boiler driven heating and hot water option and is the simplest installation for traditional installers to get to grips with. COLOURFUL, PRACTICAL DOOR PROTECTION FOR RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT The Northern General Hospital in Sheffield chose Yeoman Shield fire rated door protection systems to refurbish doors in the Radiology Department. The configuration and refurbishment of the department was undertaken to improve patient flow, the overall environment and to rationalise inpatient and outpatient areas to satisfy privacy, dignity and capacity issues. WRITABLE DIVIDING WALLS FOR GLOBAL BANK’S UK OFFICES As part of a refurbishment project, Bank of America wanted to better maximise space at their Chester Business Park offices. Style was contracted to work with architect TP Bennett and contractor Amspec, to design a partitioning solution that would allow the meeting rooms to be used more flexibly, as well as encourage collaborative working practices. Two Dorma Hüppe Variflex, semi-automatic, white laminate operable walls enable the main meeting room to be quickly divided into two separate areas. Boasting an impressive 59dB acoustic integrity, the walls allow concurrent meetings to run entirely undisturbed. Injecting vibrancy and inspiring lively sharing of ideas and information, Style also installed six brightly coloured, moveable glass ‘squiggle’ panels, providing magnetic, writable surfaces for use in dynamic discussions.

USING DAYLIGHT TO CREATE A BRIGHTER FUTURE With winter here and the days shortened, many people – office workers, students, home owners - look back on the long days of summer with a sense of regret. Daylight flooding into workplaces, schools, and homes has a positive impact on our daily lives, and that is not just a vague feeling, it’s a scientifically proven fact and one that architects and designers are keen to exploit. The 2017 Nobel Prize for Medicine went to three American scientists for their work on understanding circadian rhythms – the 24hour cycle also known as the internal body clock. Daylight suppresses the hormone that induces sleep and the ultraviolet wavelengths in natural light have a positive effect on the body’s immune system. In other words, daylight induces wakefulness, cognitive function, productivity, general health and healing. No wonder in a recent survey 80 percent of UK office workers said daylight was important to them. This, for a growing number of architects, is a clarion call for natural light to be recognised as a powerful design tool. A report by US practice HMC Architects comments: “As the importance of sustainable design grows, passive strategies like daylighting have become critical in reducing the impact of the built environment.” And they continue: “Today, we have more tools than ever to harness daylight. From innovative reflective materials to advanced computer modelling, architects are using modern technology to light buildings more efficiently. When you embrace these systems, you’ll create a brighter future.” The use of such fenestration forms an important part of an architect’s passive daylighting strategy and addresses the issue of ‘collecting’ light into the building. But further options are available from Crittall to assist in the ‘distribution’ of natural light through the interior of a building. This can be achieved by incorporating Crittall Innervision® glazed interior partitioning screens, a seamless transfer of that

increased level of natural daylight throughout the building reaching even the most remote working areas. The UK’s Building Regulations Part L1A, address the issue in an oblique manner while considering the balance between the insulation of a building and its energy demands.

The Regs point out that: “Limiting the glazing on a project will increase the building's reliance on artificial lighting, increasing the house’s energy demands.” But, conversely, “Overglazing might reduce the overall thermal insulation of a building.” So there’s a delicate balance to be struck. A plentiful supply of natural daylight, not merely into but throughout a building, good insulation but adequate ventilation, and acoustic control all form parts of this elaborate jigsaw. Steel window manufacturer Crittall is in a unique position to offer complete solutions to these cross-cutting issues so as to provide specifically tailored environmental conditions, whether the end result is a office complex, a university, a hospital or a home. The hallmark of a Crittall window is the slender steel frame that is so much slimmer – and therefore admits so much more light - than the alternative window systems that use PVCu, timber or aluminium.

It used to be something that we only considered in our advancing years, but the evolution of design and a greater awareness of the long-term benefits have influenced a significant shift in mindset. Instead of treating the idea as an afterthought, many people are adopting a forwardthinking approach which ensures that a home never requires a costly and disruptive retrofit.

As a space where safety in use is critical, the bathroom is subject to many of the most important design decisions in any future-proof home. In the past, there has been a common perception that facilities which aid mobility are aesthetically incompatible with the finer details of contemporary bathroom design.

Many people have come to realise that the opposite is true. Shower facilities are a perfect example. Traditional shower baths and shower trays are often cumbersome, with a high clearance that makes them more difficult to access for those of restricted mobility. They are increasingly being replaced by less obstructive alternatives: wet rooms and level-access showers that provide frictionless floorspace throughout the bathroom. Wet rooms provide a slight gradient in the floor that directs the water into a small drainage point, which means the whole floor can become wet, especially with high-output showers. That can be problematic in terms of laborious cleaning and maintenance, hygiene issues and risk of slipping. We advocate a less hazardous and more efficient option in the form of a level-access shower which has a built-in drainage catchment space below the floor level. Rather than spreading across the bathroom, the water falls through a grille which sits flush to the rest of the floor, with no gradient required to effect drainage. Well placed support fittings can enhance comfort and assist mobility to provide a facility suitable for a lifetime of use. In the past, these types of fixture have carried a negative association as features that make a bathroom look like a clinical or institutional environment rather than a homely, domestic setting. Much of the blame for that perception can be attributed to a lack of imagination on the part of manufacturers. The rare examples of high-end products have tended to come at significant extra cost, with a premium price on materials like chrome.

Thankfully, this rule of thumb no longer applies if you know where to look. Investments in product development, advanced manufacturing techniques and value engineering have enabled a wide range of superior options in an affordable price range, so a stylish and modern inclusive bathroom neednâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come with a price tag which is anything but inclusive. Powder coating techniques have improved the quality and diversity of the finishes available on the market, including metallic styles such as chromeeffect. Vibrant contemporary colours can add a burst of brightness to complement the monochrome style of many modern interior schemes. That strong visual contrast is a hugely beneficial feature when the eyesight deteriorates in later years. When designing a future-proof bathroom, we should never lose sight of its primary purpose to provide safety, comfort and ease of access. Thankfully, that purpose no longer compromises visual appeal, making it possible to have a facility which can be used by everyone, as well as admired by everyone. The importance of having access to the outdoors was dramatically highlighted this year by the restrictions caused by the pandemic and, for those living in apartments, the lockdown was particularly testing. Although balconies certainly offer a great opportunity for the clapping of key workers and even the occasional community sing-a-long, they do come at a price, potentially reducing precious internal floor area. They also often go under-utilised, being too cold and windy for practical enjoyment much of the year, especially on north-facing residential tower blocks. Offering home-buyers the best of both worlds, the winter garden has become a fashionable accessory for new high-rise developments, offering versatile indoor-outdoor space for year-round use. Their popularity in the Capital particularly soared after the Mayor of London published planning guidance in 2016 which stated that private open space is highly valued and should be provided in all new housing developments. The document went on to say that where site constraints make it impossible to provide private open space for all dwellings, enclosing balconies as glazed, ventilated winter gardens can be considered as an acceptable alternative to open balconies. Reflecting this shift in priorities, it has been estimated that over 60% of new apartments in London now have some type of outside space â&#x20AC;&#x201C; three times the level of a decade ago (Galliard Homes).

Originally popular among European nobility in the early 19th century, winter gardens were heated, glass-enclosed spaces attached to the side of some of the largest homes. They were used to grow rare, exotic plants, such as orchids, as well as an extension of the sociable living space of the property. Modernising this concept, a contemporary winter garden offers stark contrast to a blustery balcony. Usually created in an alcove off the lounge or main bedroom, it is generally an area that is glass-enclosed on three sides and might feature underfloor heated stone tiles for example, or self-irrigating planters and even a fireplace perhaps to further enhance the atmosphere of a lush urban oasis. Being weather-proof, the creative opportunities for a designing a spectacular winter garden are quite limitless. Depending on the location and aspect of the property, it may be appropriate for the winter garden to feature fully-opening windows or alternatively, louvered panels that offer free air space to residents of even the tallest buildings. Ensuring use of the space is maximised, some developers specify a moveable partitioning wall to divide the winter garden from the rest of the apartment. Often constructed using glass elements to maximise natural daylight, the partitioning wall helps create an exclusive space with a separate atmosphere, folding effortlessly back to allow seamless flow with adjacent living areas. The addition of a moveable wall is particular important for apartments on the top floors of a high-rise development, where wind and air pressure are at their strongest. Residents obviously value the opportunity to throw open the windows and get some natural fresh air into their winter garden but there is a safety consideration regarding the external atmospheric pressure. For this reason, it is essential that any moveable wall system installed has undergone appropriate independent pressure and impact testing to ensure the integrity of the system under any prevailing conditions.

With the increasing demand for adaptable living spaces, a winter garden offers homeowners the opportunity to customise the space to suit their own needs and shifting lifestyle. Large enough for a bistro-style table and chairs, residents may use as it as a breakfast room, or as a quiet area to sit and enjoy an evening drink whilst enjoying the night-time view over the city. Even more relevant today, with the very pressing need to work from home, a winter garden can also offer a suitable office space, separated from the rest of the apartment by an elegant glass partitioning system. Clearly the advantages to the homeowner are immense, from space flexibility to the opportunity to linger in a lush, bespoke indoor-outdoor space, even when it is freezing, snowing or raining. MARMOX THERMOBLOCKS USED FOR PARAPET WALL CONSTRUCTION ON BRIGHTON STUDENT BUILDING The development of a new student accommodation building in Brighton has included proven-in-practice and versatile Marmox Thermoblocks: specified to combat cold-bridging at the junction of its parapet walls with the property’s roof decks. In total 800 of the 600mm long, 215x65mm Thermoblocks were supplied during the development of the nine storey ‘Student Castle’ on Brighton’s Pelham Terrace. Marmox Thermoblocks are formed from sections of XPS (extruded polystyrene) encapsulating two rows of high strength, epoxy concrete

mini-columns. These are attached at either end to the top and bottom layers of glassfibre reinforced polymer concrete, to ensure a good bond with the rest of the structure. Possibly just important today is the importance of thermal insulation and the MB-77HS system can offer a very high insulation capability of up to 0.84 W/(m2K). Whilst these standards are well accepted performance levels for doors and windows in normal use, balcony doors at 32 storeys high could be subject to much harsher weather conditions common to the North West. 62

It was decided that the specific door configuration on the project should be tested to meet the much more onerous testing that curtain walling is often tested to by testing to CWCT standards. The main difference is that the normal window and door tests take place within a cabinet, whereas weather testing to CWCT is applied externally. Tested at Wintech in the Midlands, now UL, testing was independently overseen by Fenestration Consultants, Cladtech Associates. The CWCT Sequence B test is far more intrusive than the traditional cabinet testing and is summarised as follows: Air permeability in a cabinet test will have an overall figure of 3m³/(h:m²) and an opening joint would be 0.75m³/(h:m²), for the CWCT sequence this is reduced 1.5m³/(h:m²) for overall area and 0.5m³/(h:m²) for a fixed joint which is a significant tighter specification.

nozzles would be set at 400mm centres and 250mm from the face of the sample. With the CWCT the sequence requires that nozzles no more than 700mm apart horizontally and vertically and then 400mm from the face, the rate of flow is increased to 3.4l/m per nozzle. This is a significant increase in the level of water, over three times the normal amount in a cabinet test and it is unlikely that many opening products would achieve a rating, but the MB-77HS system passed the CWCT Sequence B. MAGPLY BOARDS INTEGRAL TO PERFORMANCE OF IRISH SPECIALIST’S LGS SYSTEM MgO board manufacturer, Magply, is continuing to build its relationship with Irish offsite specialist Framespace, leading to their latest collaboration helping create an ultralow energy residential property in County Clare. The 9mm version of the versatile magnesium oxide panels has been used on both faces to Framespace’s light gauge steel (LGS) wall sections, contributing to the rigidity of the structure as well as its airtightness and fire resistance. Importantly, because the top-hat sections are fixed horizontally across the walls they provide extra rigidity to the Magply’s racking strength forming an extremely fire safe structure which achieved two-hour fire rating during independent testing to EN 1365 series standards. www.magply.co.uk

SOUTH WALES CHURCH WARMS TO CIRCOBOARD PERFORMANCE The congregation of Salem Baptist Church in Barry, in the Vale of Glamorgan, can look forward to physical as well as spiritual comfort during services in the winter, thanks to a comprehensive upgrade of the building’s heating provision, with a full underfloor heating system from Circoflo having been chosen to deliver efficient background warmth. A key early decision was to conceal the substantial slope in the floor, which ran from the main entrance towards the pulpit, by fitting timber floor joists creating a 400 mm deep void which was filled with insulation. The CircoBoard panels were fitted flush on the angle brackets supplied between the joists, although they can also be installed on battens, if preferred, before installation of the final finished floor. CircoBoard is one of six floor construction options available from CircofloPro. HAURATON CHANNELS DRAIN BLUE BADGE SCHEME PARKING BAYS AT RHS WISLEY In June 2019, Alan Titchmarsh, MBE, opened the first phase of The Welcome Building and surrounding landscape at Royal Horticultural Society gardens, Wisley, Surrey. There are now three large car/coach parks including Blue Badge scheme easy access bays for visitors in park two. One hundred metres of Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC® C250, 9mm HEELSAFE slot gratings, was used to drain the asphalted Blue Badge parking bays for visitors. The channels were installed between the bays and the path leading to the entrance of the new arrivals hall. The FIBRETEC® C250 HEELSAFE slot grating was designed to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. The RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel component is made from 100% recycled polypropylene (PP). STO HELPS CREATE STRIKING APPEARANCE FOR NEW UNIVERSITY BUILDING The centre-piece of a ÂŁ90m redevelopment scheme on Merseyside has been given a striking appearance thanks to a comprehensive faĂ§ade solution supplied by Sto. The Roscoe building in the Greenbank Student Village at the University of Liverpool was completed with the installation of 5,500m2 of StoVentec R ventilated rainscreen cladding, and finished with the unique Sto Lotusan external render. The site contains a rich mix of significant and interesting buildings, such as Derby Old Court which opened as the first hall of residence on the site in 1939. The Sto materials chosen for this project had to perform reliably and effectively, but also be sympathetic to these surroundings, and to the fact that the site sits in a conservation area.

The StoVentec system has a fire classification of A2-s1, d0 and was able to meet all the required performance standards, while also permitting the creation of the visually striking, smooth exterior surfaces which harmonize with the surroundings and give the building its distinctive new appearance. The StoVentec R ventilated rainscreen cladding system allowed the creation of these façades thanks to its easily-adjustable stainless steel and aluminium sub-construction, to which StoVentec carrier boards are fixed. This is partially filled with mineral fibre insulation to provide highly effective thermal insulation and excellent fire protection, while still protecting the wall by keeping it dry and allowing it to breathe. The StoVentec boards are made of 96% recycled expanded glass granulate, and reinforced on both sides with glass fibre mesh for superior impact resistance. These boards do not expand or contract with temperature change and induce

far less stress in the screws, enabling the boards to be butt jointed with no risk of cracking – crucial for producing large-area façades. For this project, special profiles and jointing pieces were used to overcome large joints due to the construction method, and a layer of StoArmat Classic cement-free base coat was applied to the exterior surface of the StoVentec boards, providing the final surface with outstanding crackresistance characteristics. The installation was completed with StoLotusan, Stolit and StoSilco external renders in different colours, to provide outstanding protection and enhance the design of the façades. StoLotusan is a superhydrophobic render finish with a patented Lotus-Effect® microstructure surface, similar to that found on the lotus leaf. This render offers unbeatable water and dirt repellence by causing rainwater simply to roll off the façade, taking dirt particles and grit with it as it goes. www.sto.co.uk

COLOURFUL LOCKERS LIGHT UP LEISURE The new ÂŁ42m Ponteland School comprising a 1,600 pupil high school, 420 pupil primary school and leisure centre has been opened near Newcastle. Helmsman Lockers & Cubicles were specified to provide a range of lockers for the school and leisure centre. They have varying colours, finishes and styles to delineate the different zones. It was also a key requirement that the lockers could cope with the heavy volume of daily use, were accessible to all and easy to manage by the staff. Helmsman presented an innovative scheme with a mix of three and six compartment lockers. These used blue and white high-pressure laminate from Abet Laminati with some overclad with glass and all complemented with Ojmar OTS locks. The overall effect provides a sophisticated and elegant solution befitting such an impressive building. MAGPLY DOUBLES UP ON SHORELINE PROPERTY TO WITHSTAND THE ‘SANDS OF TIME’ A striking new three bedroom beachfront home on the East Sussex coast has been designed to not only respect its location within an area of Special Scientific Interest, but also withstand the challenging weather conditions as well as shifting sands, with Magply boards specified as part of both the roof and wall construction. Sea Breeze at Camber Sands is being built by Coast View Property Ltd. The building is making use of nontraditional construction methods, which features twin 12mm layers of the rugged and versatile Magply boards as a carrier for a render like finish across the entire envelope. In the case of the habitable roof-space, the contractors are applying a single ply Renolit rubber membrane over a sarking board and then bonding aluminium rails along the line of the rafters, to which the two overlapping layers of Magply are fixed with stainless steel screws. MARMOX MULTIBOARDS CARRY MARBLE-MOSAICS ACROSS CINQUE PORT SELF-BUILD A strikingly modern residential property in one of Kent’s most famous coastal towns is making articulate use of Marmox Multiboards as part of its cladding solution, around both the inside of an elevated balcony terrace, as well as across the main entrance elevation. The 3600 sq. ft. four-bedroom self-build on Cliff Road in Hythe – one of the country’s historic Cinque Ports – has been constructed for Gerald Glover using a high performance SIP system to create a series of rectangular elements, stepping down the steeply sloping site; with natural, Multicolour Slate Split Face slips, other cladding materials surrounding the runs of triple glazing. Externally the Multiboards are being fixed over a breathable membrane and timber battens at 300 mm centres with the use of the special Marmox sealant, jointing tape and washers ensuring the creation of a watertight surface. Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS encapsulated in reinforced polymer concrete, in a range of thicknesses up to 60mm and offer a variety of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. NORDIC BRASS SPIRALS Nordic Brass copper alloy cladding, sunscreens and ceilings help to define a new museum designed by architects BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) in the Swiss Jura mountain region. The Musée Atelier for Audemars Piguet houses the watchmaker’s collection of timepieces. Located in the Vallée de Joux, home to the company since 1875, the new building is linked to the original workshop and slotted discreetly into the hillside landscape with a grass roof. The plan form is conceived as a pair of parallel spirals, referencing

mainsprings – the beating heart of the complicated mechanical watches that the company is famed for. The spirals are formed of structural glazing, highly-insulated from the outside and creating column-free space to allow visitors extensive views of the landscape and interior. The watch reference also extends to the restrained materiality of the building, as many watch parts are made from brass.

Nordic Brass crown - Externally, a band of Nordic Brass cladding crowns the curved glass facades. Then, a transparent brisesoleil screen extends down over the tops of glazing and clerestory windows, protecting them from the sun. The sunscreen comprises interlaced Nordic Brass ribbons, adding depth and varying transparency from different viewing angles. It was carefully adapted to the changing curvature of the plan, as well as differing height requirements for solar protection around the building. SHINING A LIGHT ON THE WORLD’S LARGEST HANGAR A large new hangar for American Airlines has been completed at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport using Kalwall ® translucent cladding to provide natural daylight to form signature ‘light bars’ at each end. The hangar cost $251million and was designed by architects Ghafari Associates. At over 185 metres long, 90 metres wide and 36 metres high, it took almost three years to build and is the longest clear-span, dual entry aircraft hangar in the world. The clever use of Kalwall means that natural diffused daylight is transmitted deep into the interior space.

At the same time, it provides security and additional thermal insulation, thereby reducing the reliance on HVAC systems and artificial lighting. In addition, the Kalwall minimises light pollution out of the building and stops the sun reflecting off the surface. These were both important considerations because the building is sited near busy operating runways. These aspects also helped the new hangar win an honourable mention in the 2019 Airports Going Green Awards.

Aesthetically, the Kalwall also works well on this project. The lightweight panels fit seamlessly with the building’s primary steel supports, which positively impacted the bottom line since there was no need for a secondary structural system. NEW ANGLE ON GARAGE DESIGN PROVIDES EASIER VEHICLE ACCESS A newly refurbished garage at a private residence in North Yorkshire demonstrates how thinking outside the box and applying a non-standard shape can maximise the building footprint to provide the largest area of usable internal space and easy vehicle access.

The angle of the external boundary of the plot of the Victorian house presented an opportunity during a refurbishment project to remodel the garage and move away from the existing garage’s standard rectangular shape.

Here the client and their architect specified the door to be extruded aluminium, insulated and powder coated in a white finish to complement the natural stone and brick construction.

By aligning the front elevation of the garage with the adjacent house, vehicular access could be improved. It was, however, a design that required the integration of a door that could comfortably handle a right angle corner followed by an obtuse angle further along the side wall of the garage. KALWALL SHEDS LIGHT ON RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT A £4m extension to the globally recognised Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) at the University of Strathclyde has used Kalwall ® to solve an interesting problem. The Centre houses Europe’s largest forge – to be precise an 8.5m high 300-tonne hydraulic press forge along with the associated isothermal, cooling, furnace and manipulator plant. Kalwall was used on the original structure. The addition of the new extension has seen a Kalwall clerestory surround added to bathe the interior with diffused daylight. A clever system of removable 6 x 5 metre Kalwall rooflights has been installed allowing for the craning out of the plant machinery to service and maintain when needed. The rooflights not only allow for this vital function but, similar to the clerestory, cast daylight deep into the building below. For projects like this, the use of Kalwall means that natural diffused daylight is transmitted deep into the interior space. This means there is an even balance of light throughout. STRUCTURA BRINGS SHAKESPEARE’S FIRST THEATRE BACK TO LIFE Structura UK, the fabricator and installer of glass curtain walling and specialist refinishing expert, has completed an intriguing project at ‘The Box’ on New Inn Broadway, London and it’s a project full of firsts! The location is the site of ‘The Theatre’, Shakespeare’s first polygonal purpose-built theatre and precursor to The Globe. Combining five floors of exhibition space and offices, the whole front façade has been supplied and installed by Structura. An open plan ground floor and basement features an exhibition run in

TITAN LITE PROTECTING MOVEMENT JOINTS WITHIN NEW MIDLAND METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL The fire protection of critical movement joints within the main floor slabs of the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Birmingham has consumed some 1,000 linear metres of Titan Lite 120/60, as a well proven and widely specified passive fire protection product. Flynn Interiors’ operatives have attached three layers of the fire resistant fabric to sub-frames made up of 25 x 25mm steel angle, bolted to the concrete soffit. The Titan Lite is secured in place with staggered overlapping joints to resist the passage of flame and hot gases. Both TBA’s technical department and IFC were involved with the inspection and sign off of the work. As a non-rigid woven material Titan Lite is easy to cut and fix and is created to improve its cooling properties and therefore prevent temperatures rising in adjoining areas. The system has been fully tested to BS 476 Parts 6.7, 20 &22 and is third party certified by IFCC. www.tbafirefly.com

SCHÖCK ISOKORB FOR SEAFRONT PASSIVE HOUSE AWARD WINNER Seaton Beach Apartments in Devon is the first UK multiresidential development to be certified as passive house plus. Some claim that passive house standard is easier to achieve with simpler, box-like forms, resulting in finished buildings being aesthetically limited – but this is certainly not the case here. A little design ingenuity and the use of Schöck Isokorb thermal breaks, has enabled generous sea-facing balconies with sweeping curves to create a striking finish. Seaton may be a traditional Devon seaside resort town, but there is nothing traditional about the eyecatching new passive house development right on the seafront. Seaton Beach Apartments is an innovative, award-winning, new development of seven luxury twobedroom beachfront apartments, complete with a three bedroom penthouse – and is the first multi-residential development in the UK to be certified as passive house plus. Which means it is not only able to meet the ultralow energy fabric requirement, but also generates renewable energy. The project can also boast ‘best sustainable residential development in the UK’ from the International Property Awards. Initially though, the original architectural design was not to passive house standard. However, the developer recognised that the south-facing orientation and form factor would make it possible to reach the necessary standard. 86

Uses 90% less energy than a typical new build - Other features of the construction include low electromagnetic field wiring arrangements and a highly efficient mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery. Complete with an exhaust air heat pump for hot water supply. An array of PV panels on the roof yield an annual 14,234 kWh, resulting in the building generating more energy than it uses. There is a constant supply of silently circulated filtered fresh air within the triple glazed, airtight construction. And 90 per cent less energy used than in a typical new build. All factors which have contributed to the building achieving the stringent passive house plus target. Passive house standard is easier to achieve with simpler, box-like forms and finished buildings are often considered aesthetically limited and rather prosaic. However, with Seaton Beach Apartments, a little design ingenuity and the use of Schöck Isokorb thermally broken balcony connectors defies this notion. The potentially unexciting building now features large seafacing balconies with generous curves. The detailing of these balconies is critical though, if thermal bridging is to be minimised and the building’s energy performance not compromised. (cont...) 87

The Isokorb is a technically advanced solution - SchĂśck Isokorb thermal breaks are installed where the balconies meet the clay block structure, as ineffectual insulation at these cantilever connectivity points will result in local heat loss. Architects Gale and Snowden, who have helped stimulate the trend for larger scale passive house projects in the region, were brought in at this point to develop the initial detailed designs and oversee the construction. The ground floor is concrete, with a monolithic clay block construction used from the first to third floors and timber frame for the penthouse. Combined with high-performance external render and internal plaster, the result is an entirely mineral hygroscopic wall build-up, which helps to regulate humidity and provide a healthy and comfortable internal environment. This means more energy is required to maintain the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s internal temperature. Low internal surface temperatures around the thermal bridge can also cause condensation, leading to structural integrity problems with absorbent insulation products and the potentially serious occurrence of mould growth. The SchĂśck Isokorb is one of the most technically advanced countermeasures against thermal bridging. 88

It not only thermally separates components from one another, but acts in a structural design capacity as well. The product type used here has an innovative HTE Compact compression module made of highdensity micro-fibre reinforced concrete and transfers both negative moments and positive shear forces with cantilever balconies, or positive field moments combined with shear forces. YEOMAN RAINGUARD PLAYS A PART IN BRINGING LISTED MANSION HOUSE BACK TO FORMER GLORY A grade II listed Mansion on the outskirts of Ulverston, Cumbria, has respectfully been restored and developed by housebuilders, Charles Church, Lancashire. As a way of protecting the future of the mansion, planning permission was granted for it to be converted into 19 apartments and the gatehouse into a bungalow. Charles Church ensured that the conversion work carried out was sympathetic tothe Scottish baronial style whilst respecting the original features. These qualities also needed to be reflected when it came to the replacement of the rainwater systems on both the mansion and the gatehouse.

With over 40 yearsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experience of providing aesthetically appropriate, yet highly functional rainwater systems for heritage and listed building projects, Yeoman Rainguard were the perfect choice to provide a suitable system for the restoration. On the mansion house gutters that could not be refurbished were replaced with Yeoman Rainguard MOG 25 x 100 mm cast iron gutters finished in Light Aircraft Grey colour along with complementing rectangular rainwater pipes.

Cast iron soil pipes were provided from the Rainguard TX range providing a highly durable, easy to install waste water drainage solution. Finished in a classy gloss black paint the rainwater system was befitting of the buildings design and heritage.
