Fashion photography is not just about portraying clothes and models in their best light. It is about creating art, transforming blank landscapes into a story that captures attention. Every shoot is different and with every photo shoot I am inspired to begin another one, the fast pace changes and the perfect shot is what keeps me going. It is an open book with blank pages that allows me to constantly draw new scenes and stretches me creatively. I make absolutely sure that everything is perfect for that one shot, to make sure that when I walk away, I have the one. I am constantly moving, in all different directions to find the best possible light, the best possible composition and the best angle for my shot. The astonishing thing about the fashion world is that it is an exceptionally visual and versatile industry. Fashion photographers create a sort of need and desire, intended for the viewers. They produce an art that exhibits another form of art in a way that others may not see it.
I am constantly following overseas fashions. It’s my addiction, Passion and obsession. I have vast knowledge and expertise on what looks, styles and colours will be trending big in SA and shortly hitting our fashion stores.
Depending on the style and idea behind the shoot the makeup is very basic such as keeping it natural by using bronzers, shades of browns, peaches and nudes. Keep the lip colour soft and not over the top, use soft pinks. My favorite soft pink is by the brand NYX and colour is called DARLING. If the shoot has more of an edgy approach the makeup can be extreme by having a good smokey eye and gorgeous dark lip and good contouring and highlighting, by doing this it enhances your facial features eg your cheek bones. We all have a basic face shape which allows us to highlight the areas we want to bring out and contour the areas we want to hide using makeup. My must have product is a good primer: this helps prep and moisturize the skin before adding all the layers of makeup to your skin. My favorite is the CATRICE PRIMER its inexpensive and works like a charm!
My talents as a stylist is not only the ability to break the rules and make each outfit a statement, but to dress in confidence, express my personality and to be unforgettable in my choice of styles. My goal as a stylist and upcoming designer is to inspire and be inspired. I Believe that if you dress for it, anything is achievable. My dream is to someday design and style for the women I want to be, used to be and will always be a little piece of.

Move Over Ombre Dramatic Ombre has left the building
A
Ecaile - TortoiseShell Hair nd we see a shift to a more natural easy on the eye trend. Similar to balayage which ruled those sunkissed highlights, we find Ecaille a slightly darker free hand technique that is about to go mainstream. Just what the doctor ordered. With smooth caramel , chocolate, honey , chestnut tones, the ecaille technique is a slightly richer and darker version of your natural color paired with golden highlights and a whole lot of shine. The look, which began trending in Paris, tends to also be darker at the roots and lighter at the ends – consider it a much more sophisticated not so hard hitting version of the ombre we know and love. Keep the colour rich, warm and glossy and bam you have multidimensional killer locks. The bouquet of colours makes for the perfect accessory. Don’t ask for it by name just yet and it is still making its way through. Chat with your colorist about the style, and of course, bring a picture along for guidance. Look to Khloe Kardashian , Blake Lively for Ecaille inspiration. The aim is to achieve face framing highlights in the front while adding softer pieces all around keeping the base and roots darker. Be mindful of matching colour to enhance your skin tone and provide those elements to achieve a more golden tomes to add vibrancy. Avoid getting a noticeable line of separation of darks and lights, otherwise you are just getting another Ombre and really aren’t we all just done with Ombre. Maintain with your stylist that you would like to achieve a natural soft warm blended look. We suggest that you visit a professional stylist for this trend, as there is a lot that goes into this colour and it involves highlighting with various tones to perfectly match your hair colour and it can be easily messed up by a diy box kit.
Beautiful... We know!
Fancy a game of Tetris?
B
ig news – Ombre is over, it had a successful 2 years made popular by Jessica Alba , Rita Ora, But in the world of fashion , there is a new trend in town and Ombre is old news. Fancy a throw back to when video games and tetris was popular?
Pixelated hair Well see this new trend as Tetris for your lovable locks. This quirky colour trend is pixelated and as the name explains it involves having pixel style graphics coloured onto your hair. The colour technique can either be subtle, using tones similar to your natural hair colour, or much more daring using clashing neon shades to redefine the 80’s. Square blocks of colour are soaked into the hair before being blended into one another to create the graphic effect. Colour is fast becoming one of the key style areas to really experiment with your look and create something individual. The Pixelated Colour has been a growing trend in the hair industry for some months now with the style being infiltrated into salons in Spain, New York and London. Pioneered in Spain by hair colourists Jose Luis Almendral, Marco Antonio Restrepo, and Jorge Cancer of Madrid’s X-presion Creativos, the look is making waves on social media. It is stated that the style was created purely by mistake. The colour experts were preparing for a big show in Minneapolis and while colouring on of the models hair , an effect was created which looked pixelated inspired. The look was then mastered to mimic that of Tetris blocks. This Looks works best on short straight hair where movement is minimal, this way the effect can always be shown out. This trend is certainly not for just anybody, it requires a great deal of spunk. For those eager to give it a try we suggest creating this trend on the fringe area that grows out easily. . That way you don’t have to bury yourself in if the trend is not for you. This trend simply cannot be done DIY, you need to invest slightly to achieve this trend, and it is really easy to maintain. When your hair grows, the pixels will shift lower but still look great. If you want to retouch and revive colour , you just need to get a few more pixel blocks done. Total throwback hey?

Samaai RUTH
DESIGNER >> P R O F I L E
29 | LSR mar 2015
30 | LSR mar 2015
Ruth Samaai head designer of the popular brand of the same name in the fashion scene grew up with a sewing machine in her room. She remembers fondly bunching up fabric against her body in front of the mirror while her mum sewed and prepared for design competitions of which she entered and regularly won. Her words to Ruth were always “measure twice and cut once” These fond childhood memories stirred up complete love for fashion and she graduated from DUT In 2008 where she excelled in creative design and fashion illustration. Being unafraid of new environments and exploring her creative abilities , her talent led her to showcase at the Bahrain Fashion Week in 2010. Complete with accessories created by herself, this was her first international showcase and a firm career highlight. She stayed on and was presented with an opportunity to work as a visual merchandiser in Bahrain. Her creative flair was noticed and she began making fascinators and headpieces which were frequently used for fashion photography and magazine catalogue spreads. Returning to South Africa , March 2013 saw her attend David Tlate’s fashion extravaganza workshops where she was selected and taken under the mastermind wing of one of South Africa’s most established designer, David Tlale. Being one of David Tlale’s interns was a huge eye opener for her, it took her to New York Fashion Week in September 2013. Ruths fall collection was also showcased at Mercedes Benz Johannesburg fashion week in March 2014. Being the intern for David Tlale was extremely demanding and kept pushing her to the best, but the discipline was admired as she can now take the knowledge and make beautiful though worthy creations.

Ruth’s inspiration comes from different places. Sometimes life experiences can inspire a collection, or architecture, nature of even a piece of fabric. Her design process usually starts with sketching then draping and creating a mock up then fabric selection. The order is sometimes reversed where Ruth prefers draping on a mannequin to create shapes and new silhouettes then working with flat patterns. Success comes from having an amazing support structure her parents took much interest in her business and its development over the years. This task has now been passed onto Ruth’s husband Gareth Rankin who has gotten her used to burning the midnight oil and helping out when needed. Ruth’s favourite technique would be manipulating fabric with folds and pleats to create depth and volume. Creating a fashion illustration book with a collection of all her sketches is a long term creative goal of hers, exploring painting and drawing is something Ruth would love to put her fingers in when the time sees fit.
DOs&DON’Ts FASHION MISTAKES NEVER TO BE BROUGHT INTO 2015 Dressing outside of your age. Older women who dress to young or young girls who dress too old. Respect, accept and sink in life chances, Respecting your age helps eliminate most fashion mistakes. There is nothing wrong with dressing like you are a stylish 45 year old keeping in line with trends forcasted when you are in fact, 45 years old.
Lifeless dead weight hair The trend most females are into now are the heavy strong eyebrows, it is safe to chop off all the extra extra long hair that has been lengthening over the years and style it into something fresh and new. We do favor long hair over short pixie styles but a well styled longer cut is even more appealing.
Wearing stockings with open styled shoes. You should rather save yourself from being office gossip. This look is inexcusable. There are 2 options, just moisturise your legs with some extra moisture relief moisturiser. This will make your legs look glossy and healthy or in the cooler months wear closed toe shoes with opaque stockings. Opaque’s are seriously trendy especially in the colder months with so many colour variations. Basic black is last year’s news.
Panty Lines A strong error that often is overlooked, wearing garments with pant lines showing is another huge eyesore. Wearing silk can help soften and bumps or lines. A real winner is using shape wear. The bonus of this is while it will erase panty lines, it will also tuck that tummy in solid.
SLIM AND TRIM 32 | LSR mar 2015
Heavy Metal Make-Up Paying particular attention to matching your neck and face should never be missed. We all have those moments were we really need to rush out, but please sacrifice that extra squirt of fragrance and don’t compromise on checking that neck and face match. Fake tans along with Ugg boots should be banned. Layering on foundation multiple times around your eye area is not going to cover up dark circles but rather make you look like a living corpse, a good quality concealer will help you here
Lip liners making solo appearances Pamela Anderson has something common with Lip liners. .a 90’s throwback. This look is unflattering and extremely harsh. Even if you apply lipstick over, your lipstick will fade leaving that nasty darken ring boarder around your lips. Outline your lips with lipstick, full with lipstick and add gloss to set.
Living life tracksuits.
in
Yes they are a lifesaver after that long miserable day you just experienced, but please respect others and keep the tracksuits just for home, gym or running out for those emergency time of the month supplies. Ugg boots should be permanently banned from stepping on shopping mall floors.
Wearing a bra that makes you look dead A good quality everyday bra only has a shelf life of around 6 to 12 months. If the thought of spending money on a hidden item makes you cry inside, then consider the fact that a well fitted bra can instantly make you look slimmer. Golden rule , Hand wash please.
Uneducated Accessorizing Shockingly most women are guilty of under accessorizing than over accessorizing. Follow your instincts. A couple of small touches like a statement ring, polished nails, colorful heels will finish of your look. It will take you and extra 30 seconds in the morning we promise.
33 | LSR mar 2015
Shopping large Most women think they can “hide” their lumps and bumps under loose clothes, but this only makes you look bigger. The trick is to always accentuate the best parts of your body, not drown in excess fabric.
Pantones appointed hue for 2015 was getting very little love from the fashion world, but then Beyonce happened in a three quarter sleeve dress that was gathered and knotted to one side exposing most of her thigh. Soon after Rihanna showed up in an off the shoulder silk gown, then suddenly the brownish, burgundy hue that reminds us of Dusty antiques became more favorable to the world. It looks just about great on anybody.
Pairing it with neutrals such as black, white and gray and metallics such as gold and silver seems to soften the hue, especially when it’s a part of a print or pattern. Seen on the runway during Louis Vuitton’s and Dries Van Noten’s during the Spring 2015 shows, its safe to say you’ll be seeing a lot more of this robust hue. When new colours are introduced we usually are a bit unsure. The easiest way to add a little of this maroon madness can also be inexpensive. We are even seeing this colour in shoes, bags and jewelry worn against solid dark colours. Lip colours and nail polish are enjoying this shade. If you are a makeup fan this shade is perfect for bold dark lips. You will have much fun choosing a lipstick and blush shade to inspire you this autumn/winter. Try using Marsala as your base color and pair other rich fabrics with it, like silks and chiffons
Much like the regal wine that gives Marsala its name, this emanates a sophisticated, natural earthiness that exudes confidence and stability. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors. It’s unlikely that the color is going to win over a lot of followers, but I would say it is doing okay. You have to work harder to integrate it into an existing wardrobe and make it look fresh come across as modern trendy.
There are so many ways to wear this fun shade. This hue also looks so chic in leather and looks perfectly matched as your pop of color against white or nude. Marsala is versatile enough for the warmer months too. And a classic bag will never go out of season. Marsala is a color that can be worn in a monochromatic ensemble, as a pop of color, or as an anchoring main. 36 | LSR mar 2015
We see this look also paired up with lilac, teal which makes the look more contemporary instead of teaming it with basic black. Throwing another colour in to off set the mix will keep your ensemble looking young and fresh. We are really excited about this shade, it does capture the colors of Autumn but it is virtually seasonless. Let Marsala win by pairing it with jeweled regal tones, nudes , navy. If you are too afraid to jump into the deep end with this color rather start small and focus on your accessories. A layered scarf , Marsala boots and gloves will give allow you to ease this color in. Marsala looks best in rich textures of fabric like suede, leathers, heavy knits. Poncho’s with a tasseled bottom is a wonderful add on.Enjoy the versatility of this color and embrace Marsala as the new black. Look to our celebrities and fashion influencers to get the best of this vibrant rich shade.
Makeup Clean up Don’t we just wait for trips to the chain stores, testing out new products , and bringing home tons of samples. We don’t really need all of this makeup do we? We make it our duty to clean out our closets according to the season, so we should try to adopt the healthy safe way of cleaning out our makeup collection every 6-12 months. You would be surprised to know how many eye shadows you have dating back to high school. Trimming down your makeup load is actually a relief, it saves you time digging through your makeup bags looking through bottomless canisters and bottles. Gain control of your makeup bag and know when you have too much. Cosmetics have a limited shelf life. After a certain amount of time they expire, and all kinds of nasty bacteria begin to call your makeup home.
When in doubt, throw it out If you know how to take care of your cosmetics, your makeup should serve you well. If you are unsure of how long ago you bought the product please toss it out. Makeup can harbor bacteria and all kinds of infections. It is easy to spot makeup that has long past its expiry date eg your lip gloss separates, cutex separates, powders harden and your lipstick has a funny smell.
Buy small quantities
Guideline for tossing
It’s tough to throw out a tube that still delivers on its high volumizing Kim K look promise. So purchase small so that your mascara finishes faster. Trusted slightly more expensive brands should be picked when it comes to the delicate eye.
Mascara Foundation Concealer Powder Blush/Bronzer Cream Blush Eye Shadow Eye Liner Liquid Eyeliner Lipstick/ Lip gloss Lipliner Nail Polish Make-Up Sponges
Scale down on similar colored products We all have that one favorite shade and own about 5 of the same shade in different brands. Line all your similar products up and decide which you will keep by the date of purchase. In future buying one shade per colour should be the goal. That way the lipstick gets finished faster without you having to throw it out due to it being too old, and isn’t it the most heart sore feeling in the world throwing out an almost full canister of lipstick
Check the time Expiration dates are usually not present on a product, you should track this yourself upon purchasing a new product. Look through your makeup bag for your old mascara and throw that even if it hasn’t dried up yet, chances are it is expired.
Rework your process Never apply your mascara before slipping in your contact lenses. “If bacteria from your makeup gets in your eye, then you can contaminate your contact lens. Never underestimate the speed that bacteria can multiply at.
Be Stingy, it’s allowed! Not even your sister gets a pass on this. She may have bacteria on her skin that doesn’t make her sick but that could cause a nasty infection in you. Sharing makeup is the highest way to transmit dangerous germs.

THICK VS
THIN
You can determine the thinness or thickness of your entire head of hair. If your hair is long enough, pull it back into a ponytail and measure the circumference of the ponytail. Thin hair generally measures less than two inches in circumference, whereas thick hair generally measures four inches or more in circumference.
Y
ou can use a tape measure similar to one you would use for sewing, which is soft and pliable to measure the circumference. Determining your hair’s visibility is another way to test the thick or thinnest of your hair. Begin by washing it and allow it to air dry. It’s important that you do not towel dry or style your hair in any way once you have washed it. Dirty or styled hair may throw off the results in determining your hair’s visibility. Hold a single strand of hair in between your fingers, pulling it in front of your face so you can examine the hair shaft. If your single hair strand is barely visible, you have fine hair. When you roll the hair shaft between your fingers, you should barely feel it if your hair is thin. Thick hair is easily felt when rolled between your fingers. It may even feel coarse or wiry and is easily visible. Having fine, thin or thinning hair can be frustrating. Leaving your hair open most often is a distant thought. You constantly need to wash your hair to keep it looking fresh, but overwashing it leaves it dry, brittle and frizzy. There are some rescue remedies for you. Many shampoos and conditioners geared to add volume to hair, “Volumizing” shampoos and conditioners claim to work by coating the hair shaft and “plumping” each strand of hair to make it appear thicker.
It is silly myth that thin haired girls can’t pull off certain hairstyles. From long styles to sharp bobs, with a bit of research anything can be achieved. Layering when your hair is in a bob hairstyle is a wonder. The layers gives your look a fuller appearance. Long hair should have less layers as that cuts away the volume of hair. Fringes should be avoided when are keeping a long hairstyle. The perks of having thick hair are many like being able to rock layers; being able to pull off any type of braid you want. But thick hair also comes with a selection of its own problems: frizziness, dryness, unruliness. Fortunately, all of those issues are avoidable if you eliminate simple thick hair mistakes…. Not getting a correct cut is a common thick hair complaint. Woman usually don’t know how to style their thick hair,it is so important to have the proper cut, with the right amount of layers for better movement, face framing, and manageability. If you want to get rid of some of your hair’s “bulkiness,” you need to visit the salon more often. Your stylist will remove weight by using texturing sheers and sometimes a razor to create proper movement and lessen bulkYour hair may be able to handle more heat than finer hair, but if you’re blow drying every day, you’re doing damage. Oiling your hair often will bring back the shine and restore some of your lost nutrients.
Remember the 90’s when everyone had extremely drawn on high arched eyebrows. I know you thinking Pamela Anderson. Shockingly enough when doing research for this article I discovered that now well into her late 40’s approaching 50, she still has the same brow game on in 2015.
Brows on point 44 | LSR mar 2015
For 99% of the female popular those days are over, and we are moving into a more masculine territory. Bigger , better ,bold brows are fast becoming a woman’s most treasured accessory. A new study in the Clinical Plastic Surgery journal predicts that the arched brow will soon be absolete. .
The killer brow has been moving closer to the eye for decades now where models have been studied in magazines dating from 1946 to present and one stand out point has been noticed. Brows have been getting fuller , bushier but well kept over the years. The distinctive feature is that the peak has been moved further from the nose, basically speaking brows have been getting flatter and fuller.
This trend has become so popular right now that individuals have been trained to consult and a business is made out of this. This business is taken very seriously where it is believed that every face can adopt that killer brow. After all they frame your eyes and are the ones to determine your expression. Another serious bonus is that thick brows make you look younger, fresh and very bold another face from this brow game. Brook Shields was right all along, some of us wished we followed in her footsteps from years ago. Having fuller brows is as serious as being labeled “ having bad brows is worse than being fat “. Some may prefer bushy, wild totally natural eyebrows and others may opt for them to be slightly styled and plucked but still maintaining the thickness. It can take a bit of time to acquire an eye to the adjustment and a large dose of patience while growing them out but the results are so worth it. There is nothing more flattering to your natural beauty than a pair of bold eyebrows. Woman are ditching the lacquered lashes in exchange for a defined strong eyebrow. Fuller brows can work for anyone , given that you keep it close to the eye , drop that arch and find those perfect proportions. Sounds good?

HIGH INTENSITY
Time is something that many of us don’t really have and finding that two hours to hit the gym can seem like an impossible nightmare. You sometimes reshuffle your time and make the commitment but is that two hours of routines training really helping you achieve your goals? 50 | LSR mar 2015
Four Minute Cardio • 60 Seconds high knees • 60 Seconds plank • 60 Seconds alternate lunges • 60 Seconds squat jumps
With the High Intensity Interval Training there shouldn’t be an excuse for time and efficiency doubt anymore. Research has shown that with the (HIIT )you can get fit within a fraction of the time compared to the old recommendation of 30minutes minimum 5 days a week. The most recent research shows that alternating relatively short bursts of intense exercise with periods of rest can deliver many of the health and fitness benefits you get from doing hours of conventional exercise – even if done only a total of a few minutes each week. This has been explored by so many people and the result is it actually is beneficial. The beauty of this is that you don’t need a gym membership or equipment. It is all about the same home exercises that you normally incorporate but for a shorter time with more intensity and rest periods. You can do interval training by starting off with a power walk and then progressing to a jog and then a sprint all in 5minutes. The key to making interval training work is, in a word, intensity. Doing this two or three times a week at high intensity is most beneficial as you need to recover between sessions as well. With added benefits to curbing heart diseases and chronic illnesses, ( HIIT ) stands out as a key strategy for improving health, stamina, fitness level , endurance. Weight training is also effective while adopting the ( HIIT ) routine. High intensity interval training is popular because it actually ends up revving up your metabolism so that you burn calories at an elevated rate for hours after your sweat session is finished. A HIIT workout is effective for weightloss because of the metabolic rate that it reaches. When you work your body’s systems with such an intense output of exertion, it takes time for it to reregulate itself and return to it’s normal rate of energy expenditure. What this means is that even though you only really worked out hardcore for a short time, your body will keep burning fuel as though you are still working out. HIIT workouts generally use your body strength since the focus is on getting your heart rate up.

Alternating lunges Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and step out in front of you with right foot while bending right knee. Lower yourself until left knee almost touches floor. Repeat on other leg
Squat Jumps Bend knees and lower yourself into a full squat. Once you hit the bottom, jump up explosively and reach high towards the ceiling. When you land, return down to the squat position and repeat.

ound on the Eastern seaboard of the Great African continent, renowned for its beautiful sun-kissed beaches and sub-tropical climate, our home ‘Durban’ is rich in diverse culture which provides guests to this gorgeous land a unique outlook that surpasses the scenic diversity and urban lifestyle that the city has to offer. We often look to our neighboring countries for a quick tranquil getaway, but situated inside the exclusive Zimbali Coastal Estate, you will find The Fairmont Zimbali Hotel and Resort which is located on one of three coastal forest estates in the world - a 700-hectare protected tropical paradise. Zimbali – Zulu for valley of flowers, captivates visitors with its untouched natural splendor. We at Lipstick Red were recently invited to experience the luxury hospitality that The Fairmont Zimbali Hotel and Resort has to offer. Prior to entering the estate, each visitor goes through a methodical security process. Giving both the residents and visitors peace of mind, that their safety is a major priority. Our slow drive on the pathway through to the hotel gave us the opportunity to admire the lush green vegetation that surrounded us. Roguish vervet monkeys and graceful bushbuck are part of this ecosystem. This relaxed estate living welcomes joggers and power walkers to engage in their fitness routines as we passed by many enthusiasts. With the theme set to reflect the African culture I noticed a remarkable feature wall showcasing an extraordinary display of handcrafted Zulu baskets, which incorporated black and copper telephone wire in geometric designs.
Each one eloquently depicting the role that traditional arts and crafts play in tribal culture. Guests are greeted by staff in Zulu ethnic prints, the real feel that I picked up on, was an African Safari sunrise. Floor to ceiling length windows stretched across the hotel foyer presenting the sprawling Indian Ocean. Regular sightings of the bottlenose porpoises can be seen. Dramatic views extend to the elaborate pool area. Holidays and quick weekend escapes are really about relaxing, rejuvenating, listening to the sounds of the ocean and soaking up those UV rays that we love so much. Peace and tranquility is what most of us desire when we have had enough of life’s stresses. We checked into a one bedroom suite which offered roomy space, 88 square meters of luxury to be exact. A full kitchen arrangement, mini bar with tea and coffee supplies. A combined dining area , large patio with panoramic sea views and a built in couchette along the bay window – the perfect place for me to soak up some relaxation time over a good read I thought. The main bedroom opens out into a private veranda with outdoor furniture. Frosted sliding doors allow the bathroom to be closed off or left open for guests to soak in a therapeutic salt bath with scenic landscapes. And it was certainly astonishing views of natural beauty. With the color palette of either soft sienna or moss green,
dark African wood and soft crème drapes this surrounding provide a serene heaven. Backed with our itineraries we set off to experience the day ahead planned by the executive team of Fairmont Zimbali. The activities at this unparalleled wonder includes Willow Stream Spa, nine restaurants and bars, 5 pools, tennis and squash courts , gym facilities and an 18 hole Tom Weiskopf designed golf course. We started off at our suggested lunch destination Ayoba. This restaurant makes meal time and every other time in – between a fiesta of Mexican flavours.

Palatable vegetarian options presented itself to us. The Chipotle Verduras which combined peppers, mushrooms, aubergines and spinach with herbs and spices was my choice served with guacamole, salsa and a crème fresco. My partner opted for the greaser Cheese Nachos, served with cheddar cheese, jalapenos and tomato salsa with home made guacamole and sour crème. The barista even personally came out and suggested a few virgin cocktails that could be whipped up. All this while we enjoyed the pool side elegance of Ayoba. It just occurred to me that I could see myself escaping the rigorous, nerve wrecking city life often. The environment around the silence is untouched and blissful having opened up to so much natural beauty. After soaking up the sun and sipping on our Mojitos and Zimbali Passions, we made our way through to Willowstream Spa. The beauty about this is that each Willowstream Spa is designed to reflect the splendor of its location. So here at Fairmont Zimbali we saw our gorgeous South Africa brought to life inside with colour amalgamations of dark wood, soft gold, and enlivening shades of orange – reminiscent of our mighty dawn sunrise. Artwork is locally produced, traditional African stools intensify the décor and offer casual seating. The water features offer a therapeutic element to guests. Soft aromatherapy fills the air with enchanting scents. We were directed to the change facility room to slip into our warm soft gowns. There we had the option to enjoy a Vichy shower or de - stress in the steam room. The changing room leads into a private lounge area where guests can unwind. The woman’s lounge is sunny, open and serene with cosy chairs and magazines. Muffins, sweet breads are always available. Healthy drinks comprising of vitamins and nutrients like garden mint, grated ginger and freshly squeezed lemon juice add to the holistic wellness.

This pampering helps keep guests hydrated during their treatments. Then the therapist took us down to our therapy rooms. Crisp white linens with fluffy oversized duvets wrap the beds, while essential oils fill the room. Beautiful orange and yellow hand beaded butterflies purchased from the local Zulu villages lay gently on the bed. I opted for a full body Swedish massage that increases circulation, assists lymphatic drainage and promotes relaxation. Calming lavender oil is the preferred oil combined with uplifting ylang – ylang which helps to sooth the internal clock. After the treatment I extended my spa experience by relaxing in the great room. This is a glorious airy oasis of absolute pleasure. It has a double vaulted ceiling with sheer drapes that cascade and circle each chair to provide a wishful cocoon of privacy. Refreshments are provided again. A warm breeze filled the room through a double set of French doors that open into a secluded terrace and a private jetted mineral pool. Checking our itinerary we had 7pm dinner reservations at OSA , where we were set to meet with the reputable Chef Constantijn Hahndiek who has achieved quite remarkable success. He has been selected to compete at The San Pellegrino Young Chef competition.

He has made the top ten and has a chance to cook of at the final event at Expo Milano in June 2015, based on this – we were extremely excited to taste what the Chef had to prepare for us. Before making our way down the elegant staircase to the main dining area, we slowed down with some virgin cocktails in the very eloquently styled cocktail bar, whilst we waited for our table to be ready. OSA is a very contemporary restaurant with a modern twist on its unrushed traditional cooking. Everything that is eaten here is made in-house, from the ice saucers that keep the home-made ice cream cool to the butter that you spread on the multiple varieties of bread that is served to you. Chef Constantijn did not disappoint, his presentation of each meal was superb and the fusion of flavors that bursts alive with each bite gives you an indication of why he was selected to compete at San Pellegrino – my favorite taste being the Mushrooms on toast grilled Brioche and candied hazelnuts with its extraordinary smokey taste. We finally retired back to our suite which was meticulously made-up and we noticed a little note on the bedside detailing the weather for the next day and we thought to ourselves, it’s these little things that separate the good from the amazing. The next morning I woke-up to an incredible view of the ocean and the beautiful bright green vegetation that outlined the pathways around the resort. After getting ready, we made our way to breakfast at the Coral Tree Restaurant, upon entering the restaurant we were treated to a variety of freshly made smoothies. We made the decision to sit on the outside terrace on this sunny day to enjoy the view that spanned over the massive Zimbali pool. The huge spread that the buffet had to offer comprised of all types of cheese, pancakes, waffles, a multitude of breads and muffins, and other delicious savouries. And so concludes our stay at our very own local ‘Little piece of Heaven‘. The Fairmont Zimbali Hotel and Resort has definitely delivered beyond our expectations, it is quiet the getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday living and we cannot wait to visit again.
