This show grants top notch designers both legends of their time and new upcoming creative talent a platform to showcase their seasonal collections. The show gives way for new design talent to share the ramp with their hero’s and mentors thus providing them the opportunity for inspiration and growth. We see varieties from beautiful sixties skater dresses, to pleated chiffon fly away gowns. These collections are current, ladylike and fall short of disappointing the crowds of fashionista’s that book their front row tickets. Stella designers like David Tlale, Gavin Rajah, Abigale Bets and Terrence Bray steal the show and wow fashion entusiasts with their take on what the seasons must haves should comprise. In the recent years the domination of fashion has expanded to an extend where the fashion has moved off the catwalk onto local females who find this as a gathering to show off their perfectly fabulous trendy selfs and flaunt their own sartorial style. The social columns of newpapers are were these fashion conscience females find themselves gracing.

When it comes to this look you will find many variations. English braid, French braid It all depends on your preference. This look can also be achieved by those who have heavy front layered hair. The style requires some texture to hold, so if our hair is straight give it some wave by twisting sections of hair around a curling iron. We ask you to use light weight mousse, this provides superior natural looking volume without the greasiness of serum and adds long lasting fullness to your hair.

Terrence Bray

Sophistication & Style

30 | LSR dec 2014

The success of Terrence Bray is firmly based on his design philosophy. He strives for the best quality, fit and overall design. Terrence’s attitude derives from classical concepts placed in a contemporary context. His designs honour beauty, humour and passion. Having launched his label in 1998 he is a firm favourite local designer. He often graces the catwalks of South African Fashion Week, Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and The Durban Fashion Fair. His collection produced seasonally are always well received by the crowd that attend and they follow with interest drawing fashion inspiration. Meeting his collections on ramp this year his SS2014 collection is inspired by the magical romance of summer evenings, fires in the bushveld, dry grass and trees eerily dancing in the with flecks of ash floating. The idea would be to shedding of our winter skin. Through his steady achieved work over the years, Terrence was named the “ South African label to buy “ by British Vogue. Speaking more on inspiration, Terrence draws this from life around him. His favourite pastime is sitting in the garden sketching and dreaming off into fashion fantasy while enjoying the company of his cats enjoying nature. One of his recent collection inspirations came from watching his cats play and interact in their surroundings. It struck him that they must find the garden gigantic, it is their entire “world”. He soon conceptualized a collection based on supersized prints and summer notes from a cat’s perspective. This is the creative mind of our very own talented Terrence Bray. This high profile designer is admired and followed by so many fashion enthusiast, his seasonal collections on ramp never disappoint, they always bring something fresh, feminine and flirty.

The meaning of the manicure has been transformed in the last few years. Until recently, Painted nails were a symbol of classic, grown-up elegance. Tracing the history of nail art brings us to China’s Ming Dynasty, where members of the upper class kept long nails as status symbols that implied they were not supposed to touch anything. onday

#ManicureM

Traditional shades with timeless names dominated the market. But the boom in nail art and the trend for eyebrow-raising colors like tangerine, hot pink and moss green have turned the rules upside down. From the runway to mainstream, nail art has emerged as a form of self expression that anyone can participate in. Nails have never been so high profile in fashion and a new generation of young women are using nail polish to express their individuality, their fashion savvy and skill if we may put it. It’s no longer just about keeping colors standard or bold solid colors. Eye-catching metallics that were once popular are getting the back seat. Inspired by celebrities need for the limelight and do-it-yourself guides in fashion blogs.

34 | LSR dec 2014

Enthusiasts world wide are embracing all manner of experimentation with the most popular being intricate floral patterns and cartoon characters, glittery tiled patterns, 3-D lace embellished with gems, charms and foils. The shapes of nails are even changing, from traditional round and then the trendy square to diagonal, almonds and pointy stilettos. Nail art is very accessible, and certainly falls short of demotivating because even if you think you are too curvy, or too skinny or maybe too unattractive it really doesn’t matter because you can still have beautifully groomed nails. You don’t need fake nails or tips to enjoy the trend. Just groom your nails and you are ready to explore this trend. It won’t dent your pocket much and it is certainly not life changing like getting your hair cut so if it still hasn’t grown on you in a day or two simply remove it. Nails have become a major trend setting accessory not only for the high fashion female but also for the average woman as well. The internet is flooded with extreme forms of “nail porn“ most of these designs and inspiration started at Fashion Week. Backstage at the shows with hair extensions being blow waved, glitter settling on furniture and the most recent add on is original hand nail art. You don’t need much for this craze, just stock up on good nail polish, steady your hand, grab some thin brushes and toothpicks and have a go at your own creativity and mix up your mani.

NO G NEED You want to get fit but you don’t want to leave home because your schedule is just too crazy for you to make a move. Can you really get a great all round workout without leaving the house? . . . Absolutely Consistency is key, so it means that your desired goals can be achieved at home with even some loose furniture lying around. Do something at some time and being home allows you to take some time out and get back into a few quick reps. With exercise comes eating smarter, you goals are achieved 80% in the kitchen and 20% training. It doesn’t take much effort or money to design an effective workout programme at home. Things like fit balls, dumbbells, exercise bands , and push-up bars are an inexpensive way to create a routine that works all the major muscle groups. But even with no props or machines, you can build muscles and burn calories. An effective fitness program has five components, all of which you can do at home:

What did you do today?

GYM DED

Dolphin arm Plank

Begin on your hands and knees. Then move your elbows to the floor directly under your shoulders. Keep your abdominal muscles pulled in to support the movement as you step back into a plank position. Your legs are together. The length of your body is supporting this move -- it is not focused only in the upper body. Don’t sag in the middle or let the butt be too high. You need to maintain a straight level position. Both positions make things easier on the core, but it’s the core that we want to work for out tummy toning effect. So make sure you are in a straight line. Hold for a minute.Release and repeat 1 or 2 more times.

Bicycle

Lie face up on your mat and place your hands behind your head, lightly supporting it with your fingers. Bring the knees in to the chest and lift the shoulder blades off the floor without pulling on the neck. Rotate to the left, bringing the right elbow towards the left knee as you straighten the other leg. Switch sides, bringing the left elbow towards the right knee. Continue alternating sides in a ‘pedaling’ motion for 1-3 sets of 12-16 reps.

A warmup. A cardiovascular (aerobic) workout. Resistance (strength-building) exercises. Flexibility moves. A cool down A warm-up could be an easy walk outside or on a treadmill, or a slow pace on a stationary bike. For the cardiovascular portion, walk or pedal faster, do step aerobics or jump rope -- whatever you enjoy that gets your heart rate up.The resistance portion can be as simple as squats, push-ups and abdominal crunches. Or you could work with small dumbbells, a weight bar and resistance bands.

Criss Cross Lie on your back.

Bend your knees and bring your shins up parallel to the floor. Place your hands behind your head. Keep the elbows wide. Exhale: Pull your abs into a deep scoop. Leave the pelvis in a neutral position (not tucked or tipped), curl the chin and shoulders off the mat up to the base of the shoulder blades. Inhale. Exhale: Reach your left leg out long, and rotate your torso toward the bent right knee. Inhale: Switch legs and bring the trunk through center Exhale: Extend the right leg. Rotate your upper body toward the left knee

FETISH. FOOT. FANTASY. Summer is right around the corner and of course that comes with a change in wardrobes. People will switch from wearing heavy jackets, boots and thick toweling socks to short summer dresses, shorts and yes most importantly sandals. Are your feet healthy and ready to come out of hiding, it’s been a long 3 months. The average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. This wear and tear on your feet can be harmful if they are not maintained and cared for properly. Pedicures are a great way to provide basic care for your feet. This cosmetic treatment for the feet and toenails cleans your feet, provides nail care and foot/calve massages. In response to the popular stereotype that pedicures are just for women. . .They are for anyone who likes to care of their feet! We explore a few benefits of the pedicure and we go on to provide our exploration of a brand who we feel we trust most with this luxury treatment.

Decreases Chances of Infections

Clipping, shaping, cutting and cleaning of the toe nails prevents them from growing inward and causing infection. The elimination of dirt and bacteria from your feet will also help prevent nail diseases disorders (fungi) and foot odors. Keeping toenails in a good condition is important because they protect toes from trauma.

The average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day.

Early Detection of Problems Receiving a regular pedicure can help the pedicurist detect early signs of corns, bunions and fungal infections. These conditions can become serious and are easier to treat when they are identified in its earlier stages

Preserves Moisture

Skin’s

A pedicure includes soaks in warm water and massages with oils and lotions that help preserve the moisture of your feet. Moisturized feet are less likely to get crakes or other foot problems that are difficult to treat when left long. It is also important to keep your cuticles moisturized to prevent nails from growing out with split ends which can cause the nails to lift out of the nail beds resulting in discomfort.

Promotes Circulation Massaging helps promotes circulation and helps relieve tension in the calves and feet. It helps you relieve stress and can be very relaxing. A huge benefit is the increase in blood circulation which can reduce pain.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The delicious Spalicious Pedicure was our find, this is an intensive an specialized foot treatment adding some unique massage elements. You begin by choosing a flavor that best suits your body and your specific needs at that point either a relaxing and calming aromatherapy scent (Fig & Pomegranate) or an energizing & invigorating aromatherapy scent (Grapefruit & Thyme). A soothing hydrating foot soak happens next followed by followed by an exfoliation for skin renewal and improve circulation and skin texture. A very special kaolin based mask is now applied and left to re-mineralize and hydrate the skin which is followed by a heavenly foot and lower leg massage, using a specialized Massage wand to help to release foot tension. The massage takes place with an anti-ageing and anti-oxidant rich butter, the nails are groomed and the treatment is finished off with a toe nail paint that leaves you with beautiful & relaxed feet.

47 | LSR dec 2014

Key Differences Noted : The massage wand: a birch wood massage tool with a Jade stone tip is used to massage into the reflex points on the foot. Releasing tension in the feet as well as working to balance reflex points helping to balance the body’s energies. Tailor made treatment: aromatherapy based products are used during the treatment to help balance mind and body. The guest is given a choice of aromas at the start of the treatment allow their body to choose what aromatherapy blend it needs the most. The welcome touch. Each Spalicious treatment begins with a welcome touch ritual. Your therapist will start with an inhalation of aromatherapy oils followed by a pressure point massage of the head and shoulders. This allows the guest to relax and become present before the treatment begins.

The rise of the new millenium has seen the world investing in businesswoman to boost the economy. It is a known fact that woman are crucial to economic growth around the world. Based on experiences and knowledge, woman in business see the world through a different lens. Different perspective to that of men. This is reflective in the kind of business that we create, manage and the networks that we keep. Females are emerging faster and more steadily In business making significant contributions to the economic growth.

We are our own enemy because when we lack the confidence then we lose out on an opportunity to influence directions and planning. The starting point to emanate selfconfidence should be taking in your position and understanding the role you play and all that depends on your guidance. When I am standing here in the boardroom I am looked upon for a way forward and an intervention to consolidate what other key players have provided”.

We speak to newly appointed CEO of Ushaka Marine, Stella Khumalo to get an insite of how strategy, operational and being female find common ground in the best interest of the business. Speaking strongly on self-confidence, Stella professes that once woman builds her confidence they are able to handle themselves very well. “You may find that woman in position might have the competence but not the confidence and that is where the struggle begins. Females hold very strategic positions here in my environment and I depend on their confidence and competence to put their points across to me so that we can work on an integrated plan together and run this place successfully.

NINE to FIVE in

HEELS 50 | LSR dec 2014

How do you start your day, do you let the morning flow or do you plan the night before? I am very fashion conscience; I make my mind up on the same morning depending on how I am feeling. So many elements inspire my clothing choices. I am a mum and a wife so some part of my morning involves making sure my family is settled. I check my emails and meetings planned for the day and just take a few minutes to get myself structured for the day. I need to be more innovative and creative to ensure the steady growth of the park. I reflect on all these aspects in the mornings when my mind is clear.

A leader should be equipt with a set of competencies neccessary to perform the role. . . Which would you say is the most important ability a CEO should have?

What is your super power, How do you find a balance? I am often asked how I find my balance. It is challenging and there isn’t just one answer to this. I believe that it depends on circumstance. It’s something that you have to continuously develop and achieve. How I handled situations 5 years ago would be remarkably different to how I handle situations now because we are always developing. Finding a balance for me continues to be a process on which I grow and learn.

Being able to provide strategically and finding a balance for the business operations. I have experts below me in charge of different departments and it is important that I find the balance in strategic and operational because when you micromanage you end up undermining the competence that these executives have, but at the same time I need to step in when needed to provide strategic guidance. So the skill to hold your position but try not to undermine at the same time is an ability that a CEO should have.

How do you view the females in the generations to come? They have advantages that we otherwise hadn’t. Their challenges are not as huge as ours have been because we have pioneered the way and given them something to follow.

They now have role models. The younger generation have the advantage of a changed environment and they can learn form our leadership and also from our mistakes.

Appearances and presentation is a huge factor for females in business. Do you pry yourself on being perfectly polished before leaving home? I recently cut my hair, I like change. I am the kind of person who loves to present well. I wear my heels to work my collegues said that very soon I will get rid of them but I doubt that. Appearances and grooming does play a huge role and it also ties in greatly with your confidence. And I believe that a confident person is a productive person.

How would you describe yourself in one word? Go-Getter!

How do you recharge? Spending time with my friends, I enjoy standup comedy it is one of my main de-stresses and obviously I go shopping often. . .very often.

Females are all about perfection, has this ever had a negative effect? I think so, I need to often remind myself that when I am home its family time. Soetimes I often stop and take a step back in realization that the situation has changed so I need to act accordingly. Even as parents we demand perfection but we forget that perfection is where you make your own mistakes and learn from them.

Fashion is forward, how do you incorporate the latest trends into your work wear? I try to keep up, I am not so into branded wear. I like mixing my own style and making it my own. Im not your traditional everyday black suited CEO, I do opt often for colour. Right now I am loving sheer silk and classic colours with some brocade or floral. I love looking good, this also relays a powerful message on your capabilities.
