fter layering heavy for the winter season and living in a dull colour palette, we bid adieu and urge toward the reigning fashion favorites for summer and embrace it with confidence. This season’s staples include cotton dresses, soft pants (summers hero), embellished gladiators and many accessories. We have put together a 10 page ‘ Summer ready ‘ catalogue with the beautiful Fairmont Zimbali Coastal Resort as a backdrop, featuring KZN’s design talent to inspire your summer wardrobe. Keeping our focus on fashion we showcase SAFW A/W 15, striking new features witnessed on ramp is the spectacular range of textile innovation, fresh ideas and prints giving a futuristic appeal. My favorite read in this issue is the ‘Chanel Historic Timeline’, we are talking about a revered female in the fashion industry - years after her death her brand is strongly moving forward. Loved and admired by all for her innovative fashion contributions like ‘The little black dress’ Coco Chanel is our firm favorite. Being fit and healthy also gets our attention in this issue; your handy food journal is available on pg 40 for your easy tracking. With year-end approaching, healthy meal choices must be considered. Straw Sun Hat Mr P R79.99 Did you know that 25% of your wardrobe budget should go towards your accessories? You didn’t? Well now you have been informed. Accessorizing should be seen like the spice of an outfit. Avoid common jewelry errors, . just because it is sentimental doesn’t mean it needs to be worn with every outfit and just because you are a professional doesn’t mean that you can’t have some fun with colour. It may seem strange that adding more

to your shopping list will save you money, but the more accessories you own the less clothing you will have to buy, it’s that simple. Why? Well our wardrobes are usually basic driven; it’s the accessorizing that changes up the looks. So imagine having one dress that you can accessorize four different ways simply with a shoe change or different jewelry. If accessorizing is an additional step, how exactly will it save time, you’re wondering? Time is saved via accessorizing because you can go for trusted and basic outfits that you know work and use the accessories to change up the looks and make them more interesting. This takes a lot less time than the time you spend staring at your wardrobe trying to figure how to put whole new outfit together. I’m guilty! ,It takes like 4seconds to put a necklace over your head. Okay, so you’re sick of being just another face in the crowd. Imagine you and another woman were standing side-by-side, both wearing a pair of skinny jeans and a button down white shirt. The one who is going to stand out is going to be the person who chooses a stylish pair of shoes to compliment her look and finishes with a great necklace, some colorful jewelry or a handbag that isn’t unfashionable. If you want to stand out, accessorize. When you accessorize, you can wear your versatile basics without being boring.

Zama Mathe

Zarth was founded by head designer Zama Mathe in 2009, from a Bcom background and working at the bank to designing garments and showcasing on ramp a complete change. Zama knew fashion was her calling, she has always been artistic and her degree was something to secure her future. As a young girl in a rural area she believed that designing was only for City people and that you can’t make a career from designing. Completely self taught , Zama started sewing clothing to dress herself after matric. “No one taught me how to do it, it’s just the love of fashion in me that guides me. I draw my inspiration from our diverse cultures, lifestyles and modern life,’ she said. “ , which has clearly proven successful. This is how she worked her inner talent and the love of fashion guided her to create well recognized designs that allow her to be repeatedly invited to showcase at Durban Fashion Fair and The Vodacom Durban July. READY SET SUMMER

Y

ou’ve finally packed away the last of those bulky winter sweaters and found your favorite T-shirt from last year. Yes summer is practically made for kicking back and relaxing, but it’s definitely not a time to slack on your skin-care routine. While the skin’s needs are certainly different as the seasons change, it’s still important to use products that’ll help you protect it from the sun and prevent problems that can occur from the outdoor activities and heat. Keeping your skin fresh , healthy and glowing all season long should be your summer must, with the right care, your skin can go from sorry to show stopping. Before you get alarmed it’s important to know what summer means for you and your skin. Summer brings the added benefit of soaking up some extra sunshine which poses an obstacle to good skincare.Whether you’re exercising or just relaxing by the pool, you’re bound to sweat a bit more. 36 | LSR nov 2014

For your skin, extra sweat means that dirt, oils and other environmental chemicals are trapped close to the skin and your pores. These extra hot day and nights are perfect to enjoy a Pinna Colada with friends but the temperature also plays a number on your skin. When the skin is warm, blood vessels send extra blood to the skin’s surface to cool it off. Extra blood can turn your face red, making the skin swell and retain water while kicking oil production into high gear. Don’t wash too frequently. Washing your face twice a day is enough to remove dirt and oil buildup. Washing more frequently could stimulate extra oil production. Switch to mild fragrance free soaps and remember to take it easy with the towel, lightly patting your skin allows some moisture to retain and seal your moisturizer well. Remove temptations. Your hands, feet and face are some of the

turize it. Simple daily activities such as perspiring, shaving or washing your face can disrupt the skin’s natural oil and moisture level. To counteract any skin stress your daily routine causes, apply a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type to keep things soft and supple.Look for moisturizers that are labeled noncomedogenic. These moisturizers do not contain ingredients that are known to clog pores. Clean, clear pores will ensure fewer breakouts. People with dry, flaky skin should apply a cream-based moisturizer to lock in the body’s natural moisture. Those with oilyskin should try a liquid, water-based moisturizer. Exfoliator Exfoliation is key for removing surface dry or dead skin cells, Over-exfoliation is never beneficial to the skin because it can break down the skin barrier. But, it’s especially crucial to avoid it when spending more time in the sun as it can increase sun-sensitivity, which can lead to

melanin, which causes this discoloration to appear or become more pronounced. It’s also a great time to add a serum formulated with skin-lightening ingredients like Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a form of vitamin C, into your routine. This stable form of vitamin C is a proven suppressor of pigment cells and, when used under SPF moisturizer, it can provide even more added sun protection. Sunscreen It’s never too early in the year to think about applying sunscreen. The sun’s UV rays can damage your skin all year long. Even on a cloudy day, your skin can be exposed to up to 40 percent of the sun’s UV rays.Choose a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) rating of at least 15. For those with lighter, fair skin,

“Keeping hands away from your face will help reduce oil transfer.” oiliest places on your body. Every time you touch your face with your hands, you are transferring oil and dirt to places already prone to oil buildup. Keeping hands away from your face will help reduce oil transfer. Hair is oily too, so pull it back to keep it from making your skin greasy. It’s never too early in the year to think about applying sunscreen. So, although summertime might try to throw you and your skin a curveball, with a few simple solutions you can hit a skin care home run and have everyone applauding your summertime glow. inflammation and dryness. Exfoliate no more than twice a week with a gentle facial scrub during the summer. Masks Depending on your skin type, summer is the time of year when it’s important to absorb excess oil, deliver hydration, or calm redness. Masks are a great way to give your skin extra care. Gel masks can temporarily lower the skin’s temperature to reduce redness and sensitivity. For an extra cooling treat, put your gel mask in the refrigerator 30 minutes prior to using on sweltering, hot days Dark Spot Corrector Pesky brown spots tend to increase or become darker in the summer. The heat and sun both cause the skin to produce more

try a sunscreen with a rating of SPF 30. Apply your sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before going outside. To be the most effective, sunscreen needs time to absorb into your skin. Keep a easy spray on sun lotion in your hand bag for easy on the go application, this step here simply cannot be skipped. Keeping all these things in mind will make your summer skin-care routine a breeze. In addition to a summer glow, your skin will certainly thank you come Autumn.

lipping through a Prada catalog is a certain way to commit one of the seven deadly sins : envy. There is just too much to take in, but the one thing we can’t take our eyes off is the model’s perfect wavy hair. While this hairstyle has been a classic go to for the beach, it is fast becoming as pervasive as ‘Rachel’s’ layered cut in the 90’s. Almost every celeb has waved her hair for the red carpet, with the booti best Jlo wearing this look at most of her performances, that’s good enough reason for us to make this our own. So you would like your hair to fall in soft curls or waves but nature gave you smooth straight hair? That is no problem at all! Today’s styling tools, heat control sprays and a curling iron will help you to create the kind of curls you always wanted. Curls add volume to your hairstyle, and they can be styled to look bouncy but still soft. Besides, they are a beautiful alternative to straight or sleek hair. Since you don’t rely on the curls nature provided, you have a choice between large wavy hair and the smallest of curls. Your curls or waves may start at the roots of your hair or flow from ear level down. It is your choice. Curls on the Ombre look are particularly popular this season.

“Curls on the Ombre look are particularly popular this season”

First things first! How can you use a curling iron to create exactly the curls you want? We master this look with the Glam Palm Magic Wand. 1.

Towel dry your hair, a little damp would be better.

2.

Brush your hair out to remove any tangles and lightly flat iron your hair. Sleek hair works well.

3.

Work mousse through your hair, even it out well.

4.

Section by section spray heat protectant on your hair. Make sure not to leave any hair unsprayed.

5.

Work your hair into sections and clip the top half up.

6.

Curl parts from one section of your hair around the rod of the curling iron, allow the heat to work into your hair for a short time before releasing the newly developed curl. Work your way through the bottom section and then release the top section and curl throughout.

7.

If you desire natural falling curls, then bend forward dropping your head and shaking your head. If you desire beach day curls then lightly brush through your curls to open them up.

KEEP A FOOD DIARY WE ALWAYS THINK WE ATE LESS THAN WE DID. What if just by making one change in your habits, you could double your weight loss? It may sound too good to be true, but many experts say that the simple act of keeping a food diary can encourage you to eat fewer calories -- and thus achieve lose weight. If you are anything like me, you have no idea how much food you take in on a day - to day basis. Thanks to a busy lifestyle, eating on the go, munching to keep full at odd times of the night and various other weight loss crimes I barely register that I am eating. Simple example last week, I was oblivious to popping astro’s into my mouth until my daughter yelled that am wiping it all the way to the bottom. It is hard to watch every mouthful you eat and it can also explain why it’s so hard to lose weight, no matter how tight the exercise plan is. Forget what’s on your folk when it comes to weight loss, talk about the power of a pen your most powerful tool, ‘ People who keep a food diary lose twice as much weight as those who don’t’ – American journal of preventative medicine. For one thing, keeping a food diary instantly increases your awareness of what, how much, and why you are eating. Whether you are at a five course meal or just grabbing something quick form a food vendor, the most important thing to do is write down everything. So stop assuming and start calculating. Find a good calorie counter online that has the calorie count and nutritional stats for most foods.

41 | LSR nov 2014

So many people can’t seem to understand how their training and diets are not allowing them to achieve their desired result. Making a mental checklist of what you ate yesterday seems easy, sure you can probably remember what you ate for breakfast, lunch and supper, but what about that Tempo that you snatched from the express till or that potato salad you took off your child’s plate? This is a huge mistake and should be avoided by all means, on average there is 25 calories in each mouthful. Basically six little bites a day adds up to kilo gain a year. Keeping a food journal helps create accountability to one’s self. It is extremely motivating when you look back and inspiring for people to see the positive change that it has brought. Follow these guidelines to get started: Be honest : Record everything, if you don’t want to record it then don’t eat it.

Be accurate : Measure your portions and read labels Be complete : Include garnishing and the way your food was prepared. Be consistent : Keep your journal close and record at every intake. Once you have finished jot down for a week, it is time to sit down and take a long hard look at what you are putting into your body. The goal is to find out what foods are causing high calorie consumption and what you should be avoiding. Try to eliminate saturated fats and carbohydrates. For weight loss this elimination should be your highest concern. A food journal is also a great way to find out if you have any deficiencies. You may realize through your tracked food journal that you are not eating enough vegetables, so now you are in a position to improve your nutrition. The more you find ways to tweak your diet, the healthier you will fell with added weight loss.

IBV SUPERCAR CHARITY PARADE

I

t is not every day that the super-rich deploy their deliriously expensive supercars to make a little orphans day out splendid while also breaking world records. The aim was to reach 1 Million for charity. This was easily achieved by the kind generosity of all the wealthy individuals that were invited to show their support. Sunday the 21st of September will always be a memorable day for the many individuals who helped make this dream come true. Durban was buzzing with excitement when 200 shiny man machine super cars accompanied by close to 100 bikers and 5 helicopters, left Pavilion Hotel in Durban to a rapturous crowd that were in awe of the beautiful machines before them. 14 Children’s homes around Durban had the experience of a once in a lifetime journey in a super car. The charity parade started in central Durban and proceeded to Ballito and ended at the Gateway shopping center. Palm Blvd looked like a stretch out of a blockbuster movie, and to think it was our very own Durban, with our very own successful business men and woman. The first lady Madam Thobeka Zuma addressed the invited guests, and shinned her positivity for a hopeful South Africa. Children are closest to her heart. Mark McKinley, the Guinness World Records adjudicator, who flew in from London said it was a never before attempted record. “I have never seen such a phenomenal display of cars and was overwhelmed by the welcoming nature of Durban.” said McKinley. CEO of IBV International Vaults, Ashok Sewnarain was humbled and is grateful to all those that participated in this record breaking attempt. “IBV would like to thank each and every individual, corporate, partner, volunteer and the media in making this a phenomenal success. Our aim was to raise more than R1-million in a Supercar Parade and through the proud efforts of every single person and those that pledged money, we did it,” he said. The beneficiaries of this humanitarian event are UNICEF, child welfare South Africa, The Sun Flower Fund and the IBV childrens VIP day.

A

s the majority of us know only too well, any attempt at healthy eating goes sailing out of the window during the holiday season. We tend to conveniently forget about our health and diet, and instead, take the opportunity to over-indulge in every way possible. According to a recent Weight Watchers report, the average individual gains around 3 - 5 kilos during the holiday season. Sadly most of this weight is now maintained from thereon despite the January fad diets and weight-loss supplement urges. It is not hard to understand why people fall into such bad habits during the holiday season. Everywhere you go there is somebody waiting to offer a glass of wine or a box of chocolates to you. Surely it would be bad manners to refuse, after all it is rude to offend the host. Secondly it is the holidays! Your trip to the local supermarket turns into an epic adventure. You find yourself in a maze of aisles displaying a range of colorful, tempting goodies that are excitingly packaged and screaming at you to try me I’m new. Even visits to friends and family are unsafe, it is the holiday season and they want to bring out the best to impress. By easily swapping regular ingredients for their half fat alternatives you can make a healthy cut back on calorie consumption. If you are going to a big party or dinner, don’t starve yourself all day in anticipation. You’re in danger of arriving there feeling ravenous and eating everything in sight. throughout the day. On announcement of the buffet opening, don’t be tempted to fill up your plate with purely rich, calorie-laden food. Always remember that rich, sugary foods have a nasty habit of making us crave yet more rich and sugary foods. We’ve all been there...over-indulging in sweet or rich food...feeling bloated, sick, and making rash promises to never eat again. Instead, have a little of everything including fruit and vegetables. This way, you’ll still get to indulge as well as receive valuable nutrients and vitamins. Don’t forget that alcohol is fattening too. That innocent small looking glass of sparkly wine or that little bottle of beer may look as though it will do no harm. However, alcohol contains calories and lots of them. Try and control the amount of alcohol you consume over the holiday period and, in the same way as food, try not to over-indulge regularly. Don’t feel as though you have to say yes to everyone that offers you food and drink. If you are not hungry, then simply say so. Do not let yourself be bullied into eating something that you really don’t want. Don’t stand around the food table when you are at a gathering, focus your energy and time on making conversations. Conversations are calorie free!. Another helpful golden rule is, don’t feel obliged to clear your plate. When you feel full, stop eating. Simple. By ensuring that you practice healthy eating over the holidays, and throw in some form of regular exercise, you can expect to have more energy and fewer cravings. Remember, the holidays are meant to celebrate good fun times with family and friends. Enjoy the holidays and plan effectively to achieve your weight loss goals. Reaching your goals will give you one more good reason for holiday cheer! Happy Holidays!
