My life in

CHESHIRE CHLOE MOSS, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, CHLOBO JEWELLERY

How would you describe yourself ? I am a free spirited, caring, loving and loyal! However I do have a sassy side. Where is home? work? I live near the River Dee in Chester, which is perfect for morning runs. Work is based in Chester also which works perfectly for me. I also travel a lot with work, this year I’ve been to Venice & Morocco. What did you want to be when you were younger? I wanted to perform - I always wanted to be on stage and be creative. I was always singing and dancing and being a little drama queen growing up. Name a few of your favourite places to be... Barbados is one of my favourite place as it’s my second home. My mum is Bajan so I’ve grown up there and have a beautiful home on the island. I spend most of Christmas and New Year there with my family so I have amazing memories. What / who inspires you? My mum inspires me everyday - she teaches me to be the best version of myself and keeps me grounded. If i’m half the mother she is I’ll be very happy.

“Always be as positive as possible, and surround yourself with positive people! Negativity gets you nowhere” What was the last gift you gave someone? Someone special to me put diamonds in one of my necklaces as a beautiful gift. Tell us a secret/fun fact? I cannot live without my Bajan hot sauce. It goes on everything! Who or what would you place in room 101? I’d place negative attitudes in room 101. Always be as positive as possible, and surround yourself with positive people! Negativity gets you nowhere. What’s been your biggest life lesson? To be grateful and always be kind. Always treat people the way you want to be treated. www.chlobo.co.uk

Rags at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester Multi-award-winning composer and lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, currently visiting Manchester, has written popular musicals like Wicked, Godspell, Pippin and the lesser known Rags. He has also contributed lyrics for the movies Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and songs for The Prince of Egypt. On this rare visit, Stephen said: "I'm delighted that Katy Lipson, with Hope Mill Theatre, will be presenting our newly revised version of my musical Rags in its first production. Rags is the story of Russian immigrant Rebecca, who, with her son David, travel to America in search of a better life. She must decide what matters more to her - staying true to her roots or adopting a new cultural identity. “This show seems even more timely than ever,” says Stephen. “I’m enthusiastic about all the improvements we have made and excited to be sharing the show with Manchester audiences.” Last month Schwartz generously performed a delightful one-man show of his many hits, with an additional Q&A session, in aid of Hope Mill Theatre’s 2019 season. This theatre within an old mill is fast making a name for itself particularly since 2016 when Hope Aria Productions was created. That’s when Joseph Houston and William Whelton of Hope Mill Theatre joined forces with Katy Lipson of Aria Entertainment in order to spearhead the venue as a home for new musicals, musical premieres and musical revivals. Katy is now Producing Artistic Director for all in-house musicals. Since 2016, Hope Aria productions include Parade,

Hair, the European premiere of Yank!, Pippin, and the European premiere of Little Women. They also presented the world premiere of Toyboy Diaries, Spring Awakening, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love, the new British chamber musical The Return of the Soldier, and Stephen Sondheim’s Putting It Together. London transfers include Yank! at the Charing Cross Theatre, Pippin at Southwark Playhouse and Hair at The Vaults, which won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Of West End Production. Hair will tour the UK later this year and the London transfer of Aspects of Love has recently opened at Southwark Playhouse. In 2018, Hope Mill Theatre won The Stage Award for Fringe Theatre of the Year and the company featured in The Stage 100 in 2018 and 2019. www.hopemilltheatre.co.uk

BRB’s Beauty and The Beast at The Lowry in Salford Quays Balletomanes are in for a truly magical treat as master- choreographer David Bintley, of Birmingham Royal Ballet, takes us with Belle, into the fantastical castle of the Beast who finds salvation and is transformed by love into the handsome prince he originally was before the witch’s curse. There are wild waltzes, animals and some magic - all beautifully danced. I’ve already seen this sumptuous production which comes highly recommended so I’m looking forward to seeing it again! As far as Ballet and Dance fans are concerned, the exciting news at the moment is that the superb dancer, Carlos Acosta, has been made Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet. I had the pleasure of interviewing him when he was a principal dancer at the Royal Opera House. He is not only charming but equally proficient in both the classical and contemporary repertoires so his appointment has been greeted with much anticipation of what he will bring to this excellent company. www.thelowry.com

GlenGarry Glen Ross at the Opera House in Manchester Starring Mark Benton and Nigel Harman, David Mamet’s Olivier and Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a bitterly funny but savage account of the cutthroat dealings in the office of real -estate salesmen in Chicago. Mark Benton is more popularly known for comedy roles like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Hairspray. Olivier Award winner, Nigel Harman, is another excellent actor and producer who is known for strong roles on stage, film and television in Downton Abbey, EastEnders, and Miss Marple. Here they both get to show their acting skills in this absolute gem of what is generally acknowledged as Mamet’s best work. www.atgtickets.com/Manchester

The Worst Witch at The Lowry If your children love Jill Murphy’s books, which have been made into a very popular television series, then you’ll enjoy this stage version in which Mildred Hubble finds herself in a school for witches. Jealous Ethel Hallow is always out to spoil Mildred’s fun in this action-packed stage version in which an old enemy returns. There are original songs, music, magic, and a dose of Mildred’s unique brand of absolute pandemonium. Sounds fun! www.thelowry.com 19

First Class THRILLER Samantha Womack chats to Natalie Anglesey about her latest role as ‘The Girl on the Train’ and life before and after the streets of Walford.

T

he career of glamorous Samantha Womack has run the gamut from pop-princess to soap-star. Along the way, she’s been seen in leading roles in numerous television series, as well as winning praise for her performances in musical theatre. She’s also gained accolades for her ability to play both comedy and drama - although now, she tells me, she’s facing the biggest challenge of her career! “I’m playing the title role of The Girl on the Train, a stage adaptation of the internationally acclaimed, best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins which sold over twenty million copies,” Sam explains. “It was made into a film starring Emily Blunt- although they moved the location to America. As I’m a huge fan of thrillers and I’d loved the book, which has been adapted for the stage by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel, I thought it was about time I faced a challenge. “It’s directed by Anthony Banks, who already has a reputation for directing thrillers, and it’s been relocated back to this country. It appealed to me because when I used to get the train to and from Manchester when I worked there, I’d look out of the window and make up stories about the people I saw. I think most of us, just like the girl on a train, have wondered about the lives of the people we see - so I relate to her in that way.” Director Banks impresses: “This thriller has even more twists and turns than I’ve ever had to juggle before. It’s a crime drama that takes place across a

week, each day they get closer to finding out who the guilty party is and all the evidence is about images and identity.” Sam adds wryly: “I must admit, when I’d accepted the role, I didn’t realise I’d be on the stage the whole time and have over 70 pages of dialogue to learn. For an actor that’s like playing Hamlet. I never shut up!” As we chat before opening night of the tour, I wondered how rehearsals were going and Sam confesses: “Well the character I play is a broken woman who is an alcoholic. But this is such a gripping thriller because she regularly sees what appears to be a perfectly happy couple. However, when the wife Megan appears to disappear, she decides to get off the train and investigate - with terrifying consequences. Rehearsals have been

“I didn’t realise I’d be on the stage the whole time and have over 70 pages of dialogue to learn” quite intense for me - but children are great levellers and I’ve been so lucky to have my daughter with me, who is studying her GCSE curriculum online, so she keeps me sane!“ I first met Brighton- born Sam when she was playing Morticia Addams, fresh from leaving BBC1’s EastEnders after nearly nine years, with a break in between, playing Ronnie Mitchell and winning several awards. “I loved my time on EastEnders and although it was the right time for me to leave, I was sorry to leave all my friends there. We’d laughed together, cried together, been through weddings and funerals together so it was sad to say goodbye. But my children had never seen me on stage and they did come to the Addams Family. “When I was young I was such a fan of the Addams Family I used to run home from school to watch the black and white television series and I jumped at the chance to play Morticia,” Sam laughs. “However, trying to glide across the stage in a tight dress with a long, black wig and remain quite still was surprisingly difficult. “My children are my harshest critics but thankfully my daughter, Lily-Rose, who loves creative writing, enjoyed it. While my

teenage son Ben shocked me by saying he was proud of me. I remember when he was little he would wind my hair around his little fat fingers and now he’s 6 feet 4 inches tall and about to leave school! I’m dreading going through the empty - nest syndrome. But I’ve tempted him, when this tour has finished, with a last holiday together in America because he loves American football.“ Although Sam’s been concentrating on her stage career, we recently saw her in a double episode of Silent Witness as a predatory police investigator. “I enjoyed being back at the BBC and my BBC pass was still functioning! I also loved playing such a double-sided character but she’s not a long-running character- that was just a one-off. However, I have the greatest admiration for Emilia Fox who is so lovely and strong in the leading female role with amazing attention to detail.”

Although home for Sam is in the south, in Bedfordshire, she knows Manchester and ex-Corrie actress Sally Lindsay particularly well as she appeared as Tanya Porter in Sally’s Sky One popular television series, Mount Pleasant. “That was such an enjoyable thing to do over a four year period and Manchester is so full of lovely restaurants and bars. We unofficially made the Malmaison Hotel our headquarters and we would retire there at the end of each day’s filming to unwind! “ On film Sam recently reprised her role as Michelle Unwin, Taron Egerton’s mother in both Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle movies. Although fans got a shock at the premiere when they saw that she’d

25

dyed her blonde hair black! Audiences here in Manchester were also surprised to see her with short blonde hair on stage as Nellie Forbush in the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical South Pacific, which had come from The Barbican when nightly she would sing. ‘I’m gonna wash that man right out of my hair!’ “I think people forgot that, after training at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, I started my career as a pop singer using my real name of Samantha Janus,” Sam laughs. “Even I can’t believe at eighteen I sang in the 1991 Eurovision Song contest with A Message To Your Heart - to no great success - and that’s when I started thinking seriously about acting.” Sam was thrilled when she took over from Debbie Gibson in Grease on stage in the West End. Much later she also starred in Guys & Dolls with Patrick Swayze in London shortly before he died. “Patrick was such a lovely man and so modest about his own achievements. He and his wife were totally devoted to one another. He was charming and a pleasure to work with but unfortunately, he had to leave because of his last illness. However, another charmer took over his role and Don Johnson, whom you may remember from Miami Vice, always had a naughty twinkle in his eye!” It was the television series Game On, in which she played Mandy Wilkins, which established Sam’s television career- although it seems that she’s been training her whole life for an acting career. “My mother was a model turned actress and, as a child, I lived a charmed life for a while on the QE2 with my granny, Sheila Holt. She was also an actress who turned choreographer and arranged all the dancers’ routines on board. It was so

glamorous then because huge Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton would be on board and would dine with us at the captain’s table- so I’d be listening to all their wonderful stories.” But it wasn’t until Sam appeared in Who Do You Think You Are in 2012 that she discovered her links with the theatre went even further back in time. “I discovered there were a couple of musicians in my past while my great, greatgrandmother, Jessie Ryder, was an actress in New York City in the early 20th century.” Sam’s career has been a happy mix of theatre, television and film and that’s exactly how she likes it. She appeared in the film Up ‘N’ Under with Neil Morrissey after appearing in Men Behaving Badly. She’s appeared in series like Wild At Heart, Where The Heart Is, Judge John Deed, and Pie In The Sky. She laughs: “You name it I’ve been in it! But glad to have so much work in this profession.” In 1998 she starred in the ITV series, Liverpool 1, with her future husband Mark Womack. They married in 2009 with Sam changing her professional surname to Womack. They have two children together. With drama and comedy in her CV, Sam starred as Cinderella in the ITV Christmas pantomime alongside a host of stars like Harry Hill, Alexander Armstrong, Frank Skinner, Paul Merton and Ronnie Corbett. In March 2013, she also starred opposite her husband, on stage in the world premiere of Hope at the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool. Along with Lenny Henry, Angela Rippon and Reggie Yates, Sam appeared in a BBC fund-raising documentary for Comic Relief where the four celebrities were sent to Kiberia in Kenya, Africa’s largest slum. She’s also sung, along with her

EastEnders family, for Children In Need. But perhaps the most bizarre thing she’s ever done was choosing to be sawn in half on television – all for charity! In 2005 Sam also turned to directing an anti-bullying music video for Liverpool band, Just 3, entitled Stand Tall. The video starred her with Liverpool F.C. footballer Jamie Carragher and it was backed by Childline ambassador Esther Ranntzen.

It had also been reported that Sam was in the running, alongside Dannii Minogue, to become a judge on the 2012 series of Britain’s Got Talent. She has since confirmed that she was offered a place on the judging panel and had a meeting with Simon Cowell in Los Angeles to talk it through. She has said that although she was grateful, she rejected the offer as “it’s just not me”. But now Sam’s most excited about her new role. “The character I play is a very unhappy woman called Rachel Watson who longs for a different life and wrongly thinks she’ll find release in alcohol. The problem with playing a drunk on stage is getting the balance right as it’s a thriller, not a comedy- so no stage drunks here. “Rachel’s only release from her personal problems is watching every day from the train what appears to be a perfect couple, happy and in love. When she discovers the woman has disappeared, she finds herself both as a witness and even a suspect in this thrilling mystery.” I wondered if the people who have read the book or seen the film will already know the ending. “Well on stage it will look very different because of the setting designed by James Cotterill.

I’m afraid I can’t tell you too much about that because we want you to come and see it for yourself. What’s great about theatre is that you can hear the character speaking their thoughts aloud. However, I can tell you that because it’s set in this country and the events could be happening in your street, it gives it a very different feel and additional impact.” However, the play is not a monologue and Sam’s delighted about the casting of her fellow actors. Oliver Farnworth, who plays the male lead Scott, is perhaps best known for playing Andy Carver in Coronation Street and has also appeared in Mr Selfridge, The Royal and he’s also played Will Hacket in Hollyoaks. He reveals a bit about his character Scott: ”Throughout the play you’re drip-fed information about him so the audience gets to ask questions. Has he been left by his wife or did he do something to make her run away? I like roles like this that have a bit of meat and a bit of weight to them.” Sam adds: “We’ve got a great cast who bonded really quickly. We’re really looking forward to this tour and coming back up north. I loved performing at The Lowry in The Addams family as it’s such a beautiful theatre. I do hope all my old friends from Manchester will come and see me in what I think is a great thriller. Like Hitchcock’s Rear Window, the audience takes a voyeur’s journey into a world which is both dangerous and full of suspense! “. Mister Loophole Criminal Defence Lawyer Nick Freeman (also known as ‘Mr Loophole’) writes exclusively for The Cheshire Magazine

My late father, Keith, himself a keen one handicap golfer who’d played for Nottinghamshire’s first county team, understood how much I wanted to turn pro. But I’m grateful that dad also recognised the Herculean challenge of embarking on such a path: too many truly talented amateurs had failed to secure their card. What’s more - so he wryly pointed out - the prize money hardly compared with the riches to be gleaned through a successful career in law. So instead, dad encouraged me to get a degree, qualify as a lawyer and then revisit my golfing ambition once I’d also secured a professional label. ‘If you qualify as a lawyer’,

I

was 12 years old when I watched Tony Jacklin clinch the 1969 Open at the Royal Lytham & St Anne’s Golf Club with my late father, and my best friend Peter. As a young boy already incubating his own passion for the sport, it was an incredible experience. When Jacklin walked the final hole, I knew in that moment what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to be him. And with youthful naivety and boyish self-belief I actually - thought I might succeed too. Part cringing, part chuckling now, I remember how, as a boy, I told myself I had the right credentials. After all, I told myself, I was captain of the first X11 football, hockey and cricket teams, and had been a vigorous judo enthusiast. (the attraction of which paled once I was moved from boys to seniors and got thrown around like a lump of lard) But it was golf I loved the most. There was something about having to master physical technique whilst coping with immense mental pressure which was hugely appealing to my competitive spirit. Indeed by the time Jacklin had potted the US Open in 1970, I told myself I might even be catching up. At the age of 12 I’d already won the Henderson trophy (a competition for all Nottinghamshire golfers under 25 off a handicap of 24! ). Within four years, I was representing my home turf of Nottinghamshire, becoming junior county champion 12 months later. I was also junior county captain. In my teenage mind, I was on my way.

he told me, ‘you’ll always earn a living.’ It was the best thing he could have ever done for me. Though, once I qualified he did dangle a carrot… of sorts. Back in 1981, a newly qualified lawyer could expect to earn £5,000 a year. ‘If you can’t get a job which pays double,’ Dad told me with an impish smile ‘then I’ll sponsor you to play golf for two years and see how you go’. Did I take the path of least resistance in order to cash in on his offer? I`m afraid not. I`m one of those dreadful people who have an insatiable hunger to win (great for court, not so great when you’re arguing over who left the fridge door open). What’s more, I`d already been offered a job with a large commercial firm. Though that all changed when was I entered into and won an advocacy competition. As I stood there arguing my point I thought – and apologies for a bit of a theme here – this is what I want to do with my life. I wanted to be a criminal defence lawyer. Those boyhood fantasies about becoming the next Tony Jacklin were junked quicker than you could say ‘not guilty’. I never took my father up on his kind offer. Instead I pursued my newfound love of criminal law by taking a position prosecuting for Greater Manchester Police (GMP). Nearly four decades later do I regret becoming an officer of the court rather than an officer of the course? Well, there are – albeit after a few beers in the club house – a few maudlin moments when I reflect what might have happened had I had a stab at a golfing career. But in truth I`m sure I never really had the talent. Anyway, as the late John Lennon so wisely remarked, life happens when you`re busy making

other plans. Meanwhile, after spending two years with GMP I left in 1983, to join a prestigious firm of criminal lawyers in Manchester. Yet, ironically, as I climbed the legal ladder much of my life continued to revolve around world class sportsmen. Not, alas, as a teammate, but as their brief, since countless footballers, snooker players, boxers, cricketers, golfers and more formed a large chunk of my client base. Ruefully I’d think about what it must be like to be that good at sport. Instead, after representing most of the players at Old Trafford, I had to content myself with being described as Manchester United`s best defender. But in the process I also acquired another nick name – Mr Loophole. It was bequeathed by a journalist to describe the way I marshalled obscure legal technicalities to secure courtroom success. I didn’t like it – Mr Loophole suggested something underhand or dodgy and I’m neither (although I went onto trade mark it because I didn’t wants anyone else using it on the back of my reputation). Anyway, if I’m really honest, I was a bit miffed at being made to sound like a second-hand car salesman (it didn’t escape my notice that legendary QC George Carmen was nicknamed the Great Defender). But over the years I’ve come to appreciate its benefits and so we rub

United manager had had an upset stomach. To winning a successful appeal against conviction for speeding for David Beckham by arguing the then England captain was trying to escape the pursuit of a paparazzo and was fearful of his life. However there have been other dividends in not pursuing a sporting career. In short, I`m a terrible traveller. I get car sick even thinking about taking a lift with someone else. I have to drive everywhere and won`t go near airports or railways stations. The international peripatetic existence of the professional sports star would have been an absolute non-starter. In contrast, pursuing a career in law meant I could put down roots here. In my beloved Cheshire. Indeed, when I decided to establish my own practice, Freeman and Co, after 16 years with a city centre firm it crossed my mind to open in Knutsford. I adore the town with its village air, unaffected architectural quaintness and studded gentility.

along nicely. Certainly, working in criminal law is a world away from the niceties of the golf course where gentlemanly argument is diverted with a waspish put down and the thwack of a well-aimed shot. In court there’s the ruthlessness of unapologetic advocacy. Of slowly dismantling the testimony of a prosecution witness while summoning obscure details of the law – and it is law, not loopholes – to win the case. Anyway, through the legal aid work – which ran parallel to my private specialism in road traffic law - there was the sheer excitement of mixing with the villains and bank robbers who came to me as their public defender. But whether it was representing a petty thief or a premier soccer star, I applied myself with equal enthusiasm. Like the best sportsmen, to be top of your game in criminal law you fight to win. And like all good sportsmen, I never took my eye off the ball or failed to find ways to seize an advantage – through knowledge, advocacy and sheer focus

It is that so called ‘loophole’ knowledge which has enabled me to drill into the darkest corners of the statute to reveal police or prosecution incompetence. And it has provided some of what have been described as my most ‘notorious’ legal arguments. From defending Sir Alex Ferguson against a charge of driving on the hard shoulder of a motorway by arguing that the Manchester

But I discovered it was no more expensive to set up in central Manchester. I also feared that I might be regarded as provincial. Though, what I’ve since learnt is that if people want your services then they will find a way to access you (these days, something easily achieved by a consultation with Google or a shout out on Twitter). It’s why I find the concept of the Northern Powerhouse so utterly meaningless. Of course, we need more investment in the infrastructure of the region. But the paradigm that labelling an area will somehow create a concept is risible. The brand should follow the work – not the other way around. As my own practice grew I did consider

opening up another office in London – especially since so much of my work was and still is rooted in the South East. But it would have absorbed too much time and energy. But there have been other advantages in working from offices in Manchester rather than anywhere else. I can draw a line of demarcation between the buzz of our busy law practice and the tranquillity of my Cheshire home. And tranquillity is something I prize – another reason I enjoy being out on the golf course, especially when I play at Delamere, a magical oasis unlike any other. In fact, after marrying my first wife in 1991 finding somewhere to live that offered unrivalled peace and serenity was a key factor in choosing where to buy. I knew I’d nailed it, when I first looked at the property in Mere that, 27 years after first setting eyes on it, is still my home today later. Although I liked the house for its cosy, compact design I was – and still am - absolutely poleaxed by the view. The trees were a conspiracy of browns and greens while sunlight sparkled across the expanse of water. What`s more, you can see the mere from every room of the house. My then wife wasn’t as sure – we still had other properties to see. So, I turned to her and said ‘tell you what, darling. I’m buying this and moving here. If you want to join me, you’ll be very welcome.’ It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. And there are added benefits in the location too. There are some lovely local pubs and restaurants nearby such as the Church Inn at Mobberley. Above all, I have Tatton Park on my door step. When I’m not working away I start each day with a 10 km walk through its magnificent acres with my Staffie, George. I turn off the phone, and we plunge deep into the

woods and fields. There are days when I literally feel like I’m on safari as we plot new, uncovered tracks through the parkland. Representing so many sportsmen does, I admit, remind me of my once yearned for dream – or rather pipe dream - of becoming a professional golfer. No more than when I have the opportunity to play alongside any of them. Such as the two charity matches I took part in with Colin Montgomerie (whose conviction for speeding I got overturned after finding the police speed gun operator had also trained the device on joggers and dogs!). Or after successfully defending Ronnie O’Suillivan by arguing the snooker superstar’s medication for depression had been the reason for his failure to produce a urine sample when suspected of drink driving. To celebrate Ronnie and I enjoyed a leisurely game of golf at Coombe Hill in Kingston Upon Thames where I finished Birdie Birdie to beat him on the last (having been persuaded to give him ten shots). Half a century after first nursing hopes of becoming a professional golfer, it`s fair to say the sport endures as a critical component of my life – and therefore my work. Out on the course I find sanctuary for a frazzled mind, freighted with a welcome but heavy case load. My phone is off, my thoughts focused. I play to win. Not unlike the way I perform in court (although when I leave the 18th I still think of the shots I left out there). Achieving more than I could have ever imagined in my legal career has, of course, been consolation for not pursuing a golf career. Winning in court is almost – almost - as satisfying as hitting an ace. Anyway, compared to Mr Hole in One, Mr Loophole is so much easier to say. I`m sure Tony Jacklin would agree. The Art of The Loophole by Nick Freeman is published by Hodder and Stoughton

with Sophie Walker Craig Hough talks to professional golfer Sophie Walker about her career highlights and her thoughts on women’s golf

Golf is played in 208 of the worlds 245 nations. What makes it such a great professional sport? I really enjoy the challenge mentally. It’s about beating the course and not yourself. You don’t have to win to be a winner. Don’t get me wrong, the lows are low, but the highs of coming out on top of your game and possibly on top of the leaderboard are both mentally and financially rewarding. Also, in terms of women’s professional golf, amateur male golfers can relate to how far we hit, as its similar to them. They can learn a lot from our game whereas the professional men are none relatable as they hit it 300 yards off the tee. Who inspired you to pursue your career in golf ? My dad played golf and got me into it; I was then lucky to have an excellent coach from a young age who taught tour players and I wanted to be like them. I was part of a tremendous junior section at the golf club that a lot of my school friends were also in. I progressed through age groups and levels, club, county, national and international. When I went to Loughborough University, I was surrounded by elite athletes and Olympians, and things got serious in my game. It became a natural progression to turn pro as all my peers were. I wanted to continue playing against the best and pushing myself.

Having studied sports science at Loughborough University can you share the physical benefits of playing golf ? Walking for 7km is an obvious benefit. Free air and if you carry your own bag which can be up to 20kg. Other advantages are that you have 4-5 hours away from your phone, emails and social media. You can play golf forever; I play still with my dad who is in his 70’s. Mentally, the challenge of getting better is also great.

“Visit us in the city centre and experience social golf, 34

Golf can often struggle to attract a younger generation, so what can be done to get more young people golfing? I find working at The Range in Manchester that our clientele is much younger than your usual golf club. Being in Spinningfields and allowing people that work in the city to pop in at lunchtime and after work is perfect for their busy lifestyles. Golf needs to have a short form like cricket does. You can play nine holes here in 60 minutes. I think having younger role models is always helpful. Seeing Niall Horan and Justin Timberlake hosting professional events and being visible on tv on social media also helps.

“You can play golf forever; I play still with my dad who is in his 70’s”

What advice would you offer young golfers starting out in the sport? Go to a Driving Range or visit us in the city centre and experience social golf, no rules, no dress code and a relaxed atmosphere. The feeling of hitting a golf ball sweet is something that everyone needs to experience. Once you get the club in your hand, it becomes addictive. You will want to hit the ball further, straighter, higher and

I hope the bug will be with you forever. Golf as a sport has come a long way in the past decade, and I encourage anyone to give it a chance. You have achieved so much in your playing career, winning several championships and representing England and Great Britain. Could you talk me through your top career highlights and what they meant to you? I have played in 5 British Opens including the monumental first women’s visit to St Andrews. Initially, women weren’t allowed to join the club so playing at that course in the women’s open was a big step forward in terms of equal opportunity. The US Open was an incredible week last year; I had to qualify and go through a playoff to get into the field. The US Open is the highest prize fund in women’s golf. I was lucky enough to hit the opening tee shot of the 2018 event at Shoal Creek and lead the tournament early on. Another career highlight for me was the 2017 Spanish Open at Aloha. Holing my final shot for eagle to jump into 3rd spot and earn the biggest cheque of my career was a huge buzz. It was live on Sky Sports Golf so all my family and friends could share the experience with me. There is currently a women’s revolution in sports, with the Williams Sisters, Ronda Rousey etc. becoming huge international mainstream stars. Can you see the same thing happening in the golfing world and who do you believe could be that break out star? I think women’s golf needs a superstar. Sports flourish with a single player who dominates. Like tennis (Serena), athletics (Bolt). We had it with Annika Sörenstam, and we hoped Michelle Wie could achieve that but it hasn’t happened with her. I would love to have Georgia Hall or Charlie Hull be the leading lights in women’s golf from an English point of view.

Six-time Ladies Tour winner Mel Reid was recently quoted as saying “Inequality in golf ? ‘To be honest, I think it is getting worse”. What are your thoughts on the topic and what changes do you feel need to be made? I think what Mel is trying to say is that she can see the men’s prize fund increasing dramatically in Europe and the women’s game in Europe fading away. This comment was aimed at Europe, not other golf tours such as LPGA and PGA. Mike Whan became CEO of the LPGA, and they are playing for more money than ever and have increased their tournament schedule. Mel is speaking out and getting women’s golf noticed and I admire her for that. She isn’t being grateful for taking part. She wants to earn money as a professional golfer and be paid for the hard work and ability she has. Men and women can play on the same course and venue. Our money isn’t equal, but women’s professional golfer can still earn an excellent living compared to other sports. You now help nurture talent at The Range, what are the aspects of the role do you enjoy the most? I enjoy helping people improve. When I get messages or comments about how their golf game has improved and scores improved when playing at the weekend or in competitions, it brings a smile to my face. I have so much experience of playing the game that I enjoy passing that on. With the technology we have at The Range the pupil can see why the ball is going where it is going. Be it good or bad. We can analyse everything from the ball, club, pressure, visual data. Which can be put into a formula for them to play better golf and shoot lower scores which is the whole idea of golf. It’s not about playing golf swings; it’s about playing golf.

Collection BANDS OF

Engagement

Harry Winston once said that

he believes that life’s most meaningful moments should be marked with exquisite jewels. It’s for this reason, perhaps, that the jeweller has introduced a brand new capsule collection of diamond engagement rings, aptly named Bridal Couture. Landing in select Harry Winston stores just last month, the collection consists of six unique rings, a style to suit every bride, each inspired by the extraordinary intricacies and elements of a bespoke wedding gown to celebrate the beautiful artistry behind the great bridal ateliers of the world. The level of detail and precision in the craftsmanship is evident in the exquisite rings. With only six made, and each of them a one-off, we suggest you book your appointment in now. FEELING BLUE When founding their brand, Amrapali, in the late ‘70s, Rajiv Arora and Rajesh Ajmera were certain that the best way to design is by starting with the stone. And while more than 40 years have passed, its design process has stayed the same. India’s natural landscapes formed the inspiration for its latest Opal collection. Each piece handcrafted from opals boasting a water-like iridescence and marbling across their surface, framed with 18-karat white gold and expertly inlaid with diamonds. The intricate detailing is a testament to the level of craftsmanship and the results are simply divine. Opal Collection, From £4,400, www.netaporter.com 48

Bold Gold

David M Robinson has marked its 50th year by launching a new and bold collection. The new pieces, that make up the Giallo collection, are inspired by two of the most beautiful Italian cities, taking design reference from the padlocks which line Venice’s famous canals and the warm golden hues throughout Florence’s iconic jewellers. Comprising of elegant yellow gold earrings, necklaces and wrist wear, it’s safe to say you won’t be short on options. Giallo collection, From £350, www.davidmrobinson.co.uk

Tiffany True

After almost a decade worth of waiting, Tiffany & Co. introduced its first new engagement ring to the market last year, and at the end of January, the eagerly anticipated pieces finally arrived in the UK. The new collection, Tiffany True, takes inspiration from the ‘T in the brand’s name. Designed to sit low on the finger, the ring has as especially delicate band, sculpted to reflect light and allowing the fancy-cut diamond to truly dazzle. Geometric lines and ultra-fine details, like discreet marking on the side with a ‘T’ – a detail that is personal to the wearer, ensure the ring is a modern masterpiece, while staying true to the iconic setting the has become Tiffany’s signature style. Alongside a new engagement ring, the line includes bracelets and additional rings in 18ct gold, white and rose gold. Tiffany True, From £750, www.tiffany.co.uk

Butterflies have nurtured the creative vision of Van Cleef & Arples for more than 100 years, pretty much ever since the brand was first founded. The sheer diversity in their forms, species and colours have captivated the jeweller’s Maison, so much so, that every year the arrival of spring is celebrated with a new creation, butterflies often as it’s muse. This March, Van Cleef & Arples have marked the new season with the Two Butterfly collection. Four new charming pieces, encompassing two rings, a pendant and pair of earrings, which effortlessly blend the intense depth of lapis lazuli – a deep shade of blue – with the warmth of yellow gold and the sparkle of diamond. The pieces are modern and elegant, their original blend of materials used only adding to their allure. Two Butterfly collection, From £11,000, www.vancleefarpels.com

Best of SIHH:

Golden Hour SIHH is the world-renowned festival of horology and a show that watch enthusiasts wait for all year. The annual showcase is where the world’s most famous timepiece producers reveal their very collections for the first time. This year saw grand reveals from the biggest names in the industry. We’ve picked our top three latest reveals. 1. Galop d’Hermès Teaming up with furniture designer Ini Archibong, Hermès introduced a brand new, Equestrian themed timepiece, fittingly named Galop d’Hermès. Staying true to the house’s signature style, the Swiss-based designer added subtle elements of his personal touch to create a dazzling new timepiece. The watch, of which there are four versions, has a curved sapphire crystal and a grained silvered dial with a case that echoes the shape of a stirrup, as well as an entirely new numerical font.

2. Cartier Baignoire Cartier’s history with unconventional shaped watch faces is a long and intricate one, and among the variety of stunning releases this year, the Cartier Baignoire stood out. The understated timepiece was named after the French word for bathtub, because of the similarity in its oval case profile. Presented in white or yellow gold models and limited to just 50 watches in each metal, the elongated versions of the Baignoire boasts soft curves and plain yellow gold, resulting in a truly ageless piece.

3. Piaget Extremely Lady Piaget unveiled a bold new addition, championing its goldsmithing skills, a tribute its rich history. The bewitching timepiece, Extremely Lady, was a clear show-stopper, featuring a horizontal oval-shaped case – a trend that can be traced decades back. The watch, crafted in 18-karat yellow, pink or white gold, features a hand-engraved motif that emulates the look of fur, but what makes this timepiece particularly spectacular is the fact that every link on its bracelet is individually handchiselled, taking a single artisan hundreds of hours to complete.

FLUID

EXPERT SUSAN KITCHEN OF SUSAN KITCHEN AESTHETICS

WHAT CAN WE DO TO SLOW DOWN THE AGEING PROCESS? Ageing is a natural process, and it happens to us all. But we can help slow down the process. Sun protection is a must and non-negotiable, and I recommend medical grade products with active ingredients as part of a good beauty regime. Our skin barrier function breaks down as we age and our skin needs to be supported. Topical retinoids, vitamin C and alpha-hydroxy acids are a worthy investment. WHAT TREATMENTS ARE MOST EFFECTIVE IN THE BATTLE AGAINST AGEING? If you look after your skin, it shows. People can throw away their genetic advantages with poor lifestyle choices, and so that is always my first important message. Protect your skin and follow a medical grade skin system. Then consider anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler. Anti-wrinkle treatment can be very natural if given correctly and provide lovely results, dermal fillers can also help to provide support to the ageing face as well as help against volume loss, creating a more youthful look. The best results I believe should go unnoticed. WHAT TREATMENTS WILL BE POPULAR IN 2019? There are two treatments - micro needling and Profhilo; not only does needling improve loose, lax skin, it also improves skin texture, pigmentation and pore size. Profhilo has hit the news lately also for its uniqueness in the aesthetic field. It is a series of small injections at certain points in the face/ neck. Overall patients can expect increased firmness, elasticity and overall improved quality of the skin. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 3 BEAUTY PRODUCTS? As many of my clients know my favourite product is the Skin Ceuticals Antioxidant C E Ferulic. It carries eight times the natural protection of the skin against environmental ageing. I also can’t do without my factor 50 Heliocare 360 Gel oil-free sun protection and lastly the Kate McIver Secret Weapon Serum which gives beautiful radiance.

PAMPER IN PAIRS Mary Jane Greenhalgh reviews The Midland Hotel

T

he Midland hotel luxury spa in Manchester is a hidden gem. You leave the crowds, queues, the hustle and bustle at street level and head down to an astonishingly calm space where my to-do lists and jobs suddenly melted away. This a perfect place to escape for an hour, a day or weekend with the shimmering décor and gorgeous lighting. One of the highlights of the spa is the sumptuous relaxation room with hanging pods, soft cocooning chairs, armchairs and three beds with luxury duvets and pillows. The wet facilities include a 9-metre relaxation pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room. This really is a

68

haven of calm, and I felt thoroughly relaxed from the moment I arrived and left feeling I had been there for much longer than just 3 hours. The Double up Spa day makes a visit for couples, friends or colleagues ideal. As part of the treatment, I chose a mindfulness sleep massage which included a fantastic massage and facial and a guided meditation session. The therapist was superb, and you are given the option taking your treatment in the same room or in different rooms- it’s a nice idea to get massages side by side if you go with your significant another half. I was so relaxed I almost drifted off. After warming my body with hot stones, my therapist then massaged away the tension from my tight shoulders then I was treated to a mini facial. I opted for the light lunch option instead of afternoon tea and had a bowl of soup, a small sandwich and salad to round off the selection. The lunch was a lovely way to finish off the morning, and it was simple and tasty but packed with nutrients and flavour - indulgent but health. This package is great if you have a half day or even just a few hours as I did to unwind and enjoy all the facilities. There are good hair dryers and straighteners in

the lovely changing rooms so you can return back to your day looking groomed. Also of note is a well-equipped gym that I nipped in to for 30 minutes before the massage. The entire package can be done in three hours, or you can stay longer and make the most of it. You don’t need to go far to really unwind and get some zen. Treat a friend or loved one to the ultimate spa experience which includes a 30-minute Rasul treatment for two, a 55-minute spa treatment of your choice, a glass of champagne and a delicious light lunch or afternoon tea. McLaren has long

been tussling with Ferrari on the race track, but like a pub brawl in a dodgy rom-com, the fight has spilt out of Formula 1’s door and on to the public road. This is the latest road-legal, V8-powered punch to be thrown, and it’s called the 600LT Spider. Taking on the convertible Ferrari 488 Pista, it boasts a 592bhp V8 engine with two turbochargers. So if you put your foot down, 62mph will flash up in 2.9 seconds and the numbers will keep climbing right up to 201mph.

T

here are many words to describe a Maserati, but ‘common’ isn’t one of them. Last year, the Italian manufacturer sold fewer cars than either Aston Martin or Bentley. But despite this, the company has decided to build an ultra, ultra-exclusive version of its sexy Levante SUV. Named the Levante Vulcano, it’s limited to just 150 examples across Europe and Asia. All will come with a lava-inspired colour scheme of matte grey paint, glossy black accents and dashes of Italian racing red on the brakes. But while the exterior options are set in igneous stone, you do get choice of interiors. Our pictures show the red leather with black stitching, but those wanting a slightly less vibrant cabin might prefer the black leather with red stitching. Either way, you’re surrounded by swathes of carbonfibre, which is even found on the steering wheel and gear shift paddles, and you get a ‘One of 150’ plaque to remind you that you’re essentially driving the fourwheeled equivalent of a unicorn. Prices start from £85,425, and for that you get a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with 345bhp, but you can upgrade to the 424bhp version for an extra £7,500 or so. 72

EVOLUTION AND REVOLUTIONS The Lamborghini Huracan has been getting long in the tooth, so the company’s engineers have indulged in some pretty major surgery. The looks haven’t changed much, but the 5.2-litre V10 that hides behind the seats has been given a thorough makeover. Where once there was a mere 601bhp, there are now 631 raging Italian horses. And enormous exhausts provide a soundtrack to match. That’s enough for 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of “more than 200mph”. That should provide competition for the McLaren on the other page…

YOUR MOVE, MERCEDES If you want a luxury saloon, you buy something German. It’s just the way things are done. But the question remains; which one? BMW’s latest attempt to woo you is the new 7 Series. Behind the upright and somewhat opinion-splitting snout, there’s a choice of petrol, diesel and hybrid power, all of which use super-smooth six-, eight- and 12-cylinder engines. On-board tech is also extensive, with the highlight being a tablet computer that controls the sat-nav, climate control and pretty much everything else, too. Prices start from £69,430. 73

SCI-FI STYLE Hybrids are cool again, and none more so than Lexus’ gorgeous new LC

T

he ninjas of ancient Japan practically invented the element of surprise. Their mastery of stealth and disguise allowed them to ghost into enemy territory, then attack with vicious savagery and lethal efficiency. They were like the SAS, only better. This month, though, I think I’ve found something equal to their talents, and it comes perhaps unsurprisingly - from Japan. It’s called the Lexus LC, and it’s a huge luxury coupe that sits somewhere between the Porsche 911 and the Aston Martin DB11 in the sports car hierarchy. It’s more thrusting and wafty than the Porsche, but cheaper and less opulent than the Aston. And it’s more futuristic than both, because it’s available as a hybrid. I know what you’re thinking, but bear with me on this. Once upon a time, hybrids were bought by virtue signallers of the highest calibre, with celebrities flocking to the Toyota Prius like popstars to an African orphanage. It told the world they cared about the plight of the polar bear - just not enough to take the train. Fast-forward 20 years, though, and the pursuit of speed has made hybrids cool. F1 cars are hybrids these days, and so too are some of the world’s fastest supercars.

74

75

Drive | The CHESHIRE Magazine

And although the hybrid LC isn’t quite a supercar, it’s definitely fast. There’s a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine loitering under the bonnet, as well as an electric motor, and the two combine to produce 354bhp. That means 0-62mph takes just five seconds, and the top speed is 155mph. You can have a thumping 5.0-litre V8 version, too, but that’s barely any faster and it won’t match the hybrid’s economy. It would also struggle to be anything like as refined. In the cruise, the hybrid system is like a good butler; quiet and efficient. The supersmooth engine and near-silent electric motor split their duties without fuss Lexus or sound, and you almost forget LC 500h there’s a huge amount of power just a few feet in front of you. Price from: £76,595 Price as tested: £88,520 But the car is stalking you, Engine: 3.5-litre petrol V6 lulling you into a false sense of plus electric motor security. And just when you Power: 354bhp think it’s safe to mash the Top speed: 155mph throttle pedal deep into the 0-60mph: 5.0s firewall, the butler’s wrath is unleashed. The electric motor pins you to the seat while the engine begins its attack, screaming like a bear having a prostate exam. Then the numbers on the speedo start to blur, changing faster than you can read them. Before you know it, the angry-looking magistrate has taken your driving licence away. Sometimes, then, you’ll want to drive this car slowly, although that won’t just be because you’re scared of the jujutsu Jeeves under the bonnet. It’s because you’ll want to be seen behind the wheel. By any measure, the LC is simply gorgeous. It’s angular but sleek; sharp but svelte. It oozes futuristic style and sophistication in a way that no Bentley or Mercedes can replicate. Even among the sexiest supercars and the smartest SUVs, the LC turns heads. However, the car is at its best not in town, but on the open road - as long as you don’t think you’re Lewis Hamilton. At almost two

76

The super-smooth engine and near-silent electric motor split their duties without fuss or sound tonnes, it’s too heavy for properly fast driving, and the hybrid’s punchiness means flooring it halfway through a corner is a one-way ticket to the nearest ditch. You have to treat it gently. If you do that, you’ll find the LC a fabulous long-distance companion. The petrol-electric power unit whispers in the background while the optional high-powered Mark Levinson sound system assaults your ears. The seats are comfortable and the ride, which has to be a little bit stiff for handling purposes, is better suited to faster roads. The only real problem, then, is the interior. It looks almost as good as the exterior and it’s littered with clever gadgets, but some of the plastics are a bit low-rent for a £75,000 luxury car. The rear seats are suitable only for children or Nearly Headless Nick, too, although that accusation could be thrown at pretty much any sporty-looking coupe. But the true lowlight is the multimedia system. It’s a massive, high-definition widescreen unit controlled by a fiddly laptop-style touchpad and an array of tiny buttons. It might have sounded clever in a Lexus board meeting, but when you’re on the move it’s irritating and distracting in equal measure. For all that, though, the LC is still a great car. Far more famous cars have had much bigger issues than a stupid sat nav. Early versions of the Porsche 911 Turbo were notoriously difficult to drive fast, and the Lamborghini Countach was impossible to see out of. And so the LC has its foibles, yet all is forgiven if you just step back and look at it. It isn’t perfect, but somehow it just is.

Stars in their Eyes

The Beverly Hills Hotel in LA has been undergoing a step-by-step restoration since celebrating its centenary in 2012, starting with the lobby, the Polo Lounge, then the pool and Cabana Café, and the rooms and suites. Its final step is now its famous bungalows. First introduced in 1915 for families seeking space and privacy, there will eventually be five legendary bungalows, which have been inspired by famous celebrities who stayed there. Fun fact: Elizabeth Taylor spent six of her eight honeymoons there, and her inspired bungalow was unveiled in 2016, along with Frank Sinatra’s. The three remaining – Marilyn Monroe, Howard Hughes and Charlie Chaplin – will make their debut this year.www.dorchestercollection.com

Following Hurricane Irma that wreaked havoc on St Barths in 2017, the romantic Caribbean destination is firmly back on the map. Le Sereno, originally designed by Christian Liaigre, has reopened with new suites, restaurant, family suites, spa and fitness facilities. about it now as one of my all time favourite places. We travelled around the area (which is the heel of Italy) for our first wedding anniversary, and it did not disappoint. We stayed in a few different locations across the 11 days - Monopoli, Lecce, Ostuni and Matera - and each place was honestly more beautiful than the next. Every time we would leave somewhere we would say the next place wouldn’t be able to beat it...and we were wrong. The people, food, towns, beaches are all really traditional Italian, and though less English is spoken than in the more well known cities of Italy, everywhere was super friendly. So, if like us, you’re a couple who likes to travel, try new things and places and LOVES incredible Italian food then I couldn’t recommend Puglia enough. We can’t wait to go to continue exploring and get to know this beautiful area of Italy even better.

SEAS for all

Seasons Sarah Irlam heads to the Maldives for some winter sunshine and plenty of adventure

I

t’s wet, cold and windy in the UK in December. I’m aware that this is stating the obvious, however like so many, I long for some winter sun to get me through these months until spring pokes out its sprightly head. So this year instead of powering through, I find myself at Gatwick Airport, about to board a 10-hour non-stop BA flight to Malé, in the Maldives. Everyone needs to go to the Maldives once in their lifetime. Nowhere else does the desertisland idyll quite so well. Whether it’s the crystal-clear turquoise seas, the blindingly white sandy beaches or the palm trees swaying the in the gentle breeze, it really is the place to fly and flop. Made up of around 1,190 individual islands peppered across the Indian Ocean, it sits just below India and Sri Lanka, and has a year-round tropical climate. My exact destination? Sheraton Maldives Full

Moon Resort & Spa. Having been greeted at the airport by our driver and also villa host, Asad, it’s just a 10-minute speedboat to the five-star hotel. And given the last mode of transport, I feel quite the female equivalent of James Bond already. Impressively, check in is completed on board the boat, meaning that I don’t have any of the hassle of waiting at reception. I’m also given a cold towel,

which is well-received with the mercury averaging 26 degrees. The plummeting temperatures in the UK already seem a distant memory away. The resort is nestled among lush greenery, palm trees and a lagoon, and is every bit the ultimate island retreat I had envisaged. I sip on a refreshing coconut cocktail as I soak up my surroundings, and then the luxury continues as I’m driven to my villa by golf buggy, happily counting all of the novel transportation needed to reach my end destination. I have a pinch-me moment when I see where I’ll be calling my home-from-home for the next four nights: the accommodation is spacious and furnished in a tropical Maldivian style, and there’s a nice personal touch, with ‘Welcome to the Maldives’ written in flowers on the bed; not to mention the fact that I have my very own private pool. Upon my explorations, I also spot fresh fruit and mini desserts on the table but decide not to ruin my appetite. It’s certainly a good job I don’t, as at

lunchtime I’m treated to a very special meal. Taken to the beach by buggy – it’s now my favourite way to travel – I’m wowed when I see that a picnic-style table has been put out in the sea for me. Served with a glass of Champagne on arrival, I dip my toes in the water and savour the meal which includes a starter of grilled halloumi with prawns and watermelon salad, followed by a passion fruit sorbet with apple caviar as a palate cleanser. The main course of tiger prawns, tuna steak and fish fillet is an extraordinary amount even without the accompanying grilled vegetables and sumptuous baked potato with saffron cream sauce and garlic butter, but I manage to happily scoff everything nonetheless. Despite all this indulgence, I’m still able to find room for a

83

mango cheesecake dessert with fruits and vanilla ice cream. Having eaten enough to sink a fleet, I decide it’s best to remain on dry land for the rest of the day, and later it’s with no sense of irony whatsoever that I find myself watching sharks being fed just off the beach. That evening, although still full from lunch, I enjoy a buffet dinner in the Feast restaurant, followed by drinks and cocktails in the Anchorage Bar while listening to a live band – a perfect way to end a first day in paradise. The next morning I’m up bright and early for breakfast, eager as anything for a 9am snorkelling lesson. I learn the ropes and one hour later I’m continuing the theme of glamorous transport on board another speedboat to one of Maldives’ sandbanks – these are are islands with nothing on them but sand, and are a Maldives must-see. I put my lesson into practice and watch as colourful fish surround me. The staff meanwhile set up sunbeds with towels and umbrellas, and once I’m out of the water, I enjoy a glass of Champagne accompanied by some canapés. Continuing the tour, I hop back on board the boat and later snorkel with large stingrays and more rainbow-coloured fish that would give the cast of Finding Nemo a run for their money. I return to the hotel, already with the next activity for the day lined up. This time it’s a cookery demonstration, where I’m shown how to make local favourites such as fresh tuna salad, chicken curry, chapati, rice and banana fritters; the class is fun and engaging, and also acts as lunch. Having digested my homemade meal and not being one to do things by halves, I make the most of another excursion – this time on a dolphin cruise. I watch as dolphins

84

swim alongside the boat and am struck by the thought of just how truly breathtaking it is to be so close to nature. I get back just in time to see the sun set at the hotel, and in the evening I enjoy a barbecue buffet dinner which has been laid out on the candlelit beach, all the while listening to authentic Maldivian drummers. To finish, I have cocktails back at what is quickly becoming my new favourite bar while listening to a DJ. As the sun rises on my third day of my sojourn, I wake up and enjoy a breakfast of champions by the sea, with an array of pastries, fresh fruit and sweet treats to tempt me. I opt for French toast with cinnamon and maple syrup, followed by eggs Benedict, all washed down with fresh juice and coffee. After refueling from my action-packed day before, I decide to make the most of the setting and settle into a slower pace of holidaymaking, whiling the morning away playing boules on the beach, followed by table tennis, and finally, paddle boarding in the sea. Enjoying my surroundings, I stay by the sands and dine at the Kakuni Hut beach bar, where I order up a Tex-Mex dream of a lunch consisting of nachos, quesadilla and mini burgers. As the day blissfully drifts by, I watch how coconuts are collected from the trees – it’s

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Travel The CHESHIRE Magazine | Regulars

incredible how the locals tie fabric around the tree and climb right up to the top. I’m given one direct from source and I savour its refreshing taste. By late afternoon I head to the hotel’s Shine Spa – it’s not often one can experience a private spa island, on an island. Pre-treatment, I sip fresh mint tea in the relaxation room before heading to one of the spa pavilions where I indulge in a relaxing full body massage. Feeling invigorated yet soothed, I finish the day with cocktails and canapés on the seafront, with dinner at the Baan Thai restaurant. This eatery is especially worthy of a mention as it has such a variety of dishes, all made from imported ingredients from Thailand. Afterwards, I find myself once again

in my regular haunt, the Anchorage Bar, where I indulge in cocktails and shisha while listening to a live solo singer. With a new day dawning, I try and atone for my excesses of the previous evening with a spot of yoga on the beach. Doing so provides me with one of those once-in-a-lifetime feelings, as well as a sense of virtuous achievement which helps me to justify another bout of intense relaxing, making the most of the blissful weather by the pool. The activity is only broken up by mealtimes, with lunch at the T-For Tea House, although its outdoor dining option means that I can still bask in the Maldivian sun regardless. The rest of the day is spent continuing to laze around, followed in the evening by sampling a mock-up wedding breakfast on the beach where I enjoy chicken satay with papaya salad, followed by an incredible spread of salmon steak, local lobster, calamari and grilled vegetables, along with the now-obligatory baked potato with saffron cream. The crème brûlée with fruits and ice cream tops off a meal which is the perfect end to my island getaway. And as I head off the following day, although my head starts turning back to the freezing joys of my homeland, I know that the memory of my short escape to paradise will keep me warm long enough until spring finally arrives. SLEEP REPEAT MJ Greenhalgh seeks the perfect alpine weekend bolt hole even with children in tow

W

here does a family of five go for a three-day mini-break in the Alps to catch the early season snow and benefit from some mountain luxury? A brief session on Google and fond memories from childhood holidays suggested that Flaine was a good place to consider. Growing up we both remembered happy holidays in the Totem and Gradin Gris Hotels (the latter of which has now become part of the Totem). The area’s proximity to Geneva and the fact that the Grand Massif offers a large amount of varied skiing to suit all levels of experience meant that it ticked all of our boxes when finalising our short break to the Alps. At the end of the day we were looking for something that provided us with a luxurious but low-key and friendly environment for both adults and children, whilst also considering that a trip to the Alps with 3 youngsters could be a challenge for such a short period of time; so everything

86

needed to be easy and well thought out. Wind forward a couple of months and it is fair to say that the resort and our accommodation more than stepped up to the plate and we have come back feeling fully rejuvenated and the children have had a wonderful time. The Terminal Neige Totem is situated in pole position on the edge of the forum in Flaine with direct access to all of the local amenities and to the pistes themselves. Our trip running Thursday night through to Sunday afternoon was made

exceptionally easy via the use of Erica Transfers www.ericatransferts.com. Erica herself is a charming Argentinian lady who was exceptionally amenable and immediately put us into the holiday mode on collection from Geneva airport. One of the reasons for picking Flaine was its proximity to Geneva (only a 60-minute transfer away). We arrived in the resort at 11 pm with 3 tired but hungry children and the hotel immediately scored full points, having prepared a fantastic meal for us all with the expectation that we would not have eaten properly on our travel over. We were shown up to our amazing suite which has been beautifully done up but reflects the original Bauhaus design of this intimate but minimalist hotel.

The abundance of cowhide, vintage decorations and modern art both in our stunning suite and around the hotel juxtaposes well with the bare concrete and makes for a cosy but modern ambience in the rooms and the hotel. Crisp fine linen coupled with plenty of sumptuous towels and robes provided a real sense of luxury at the end of a hard day on the piste along with natural mountain toiletries. We made use of the hotel’s half-board proposition, which provided us (and more importantly our children) with a fantastically filling breakfast with a huge array on offer, including both healthy options (wonderful fruit, nuts, cereals and porridge) and delicious cooked choices as well as the more traditional French pastries. The dining room opens onto a large terrace facing the ski slopes so it was great to see the first skiers hit the slopes whilst we were finishing a delicious cappuccino and breakfast. The bar and restaurant follow a similar format to the rest of the hotel in so far as there is a modern, urban vibe infused with the traditional Alpine warmth and there is a fantastic open fire that acts as a focal point the bar. The bar itself has a real buzz to it and offers a great array of cocktails and all the usual suspects. In the evening guests had the option of two sittings either at 7 or 8.30pm and again there was a wide array of food on offer to satisfy the demands of a full day on the piste - from delicious sushi salmon to more traditional French options and child-friendly pizza and

87

Travel | The CHESHIRE Magazine

pasta. This was complemented by a well thought out wine list. We ended up at the later sitting as couldn’t escape the pull of the bar plus the constant requests to take the children to the ice-skating rink which is conveniently located directly opposite the entrance to the hotel. The hotel benefits from the stunning Pure Altitude Spa and its skier programme is an absolute must. I was able to benefit from the restful Ritual Pure Altitude Massage which was 50 minutes of sheer bliss and one of the best massages I have ever had and is personalized depending on your needs. All the products used are from the Pure Altitude range which is made in the mountains locally using plants and natural mountain minerals. In addition, there is a sauna and stunning outdoor hot tub which has a panoramic view out across the natural bowl in which Flaine sits. My husband seemed to want to return to it at any opportunity to help soothe away the aches and pains that one invariably gets when pushing hard on the mountain and picking up children! For those that do not feel they have done enough exercise throughout the day, there is also a well-equipped gym that guests can make use of at their leisure. The hotel has a well-equipped ski shop which allows guests to hire ski kit directly from the hotel to ensure you can be straight out on the mountain which is especially important if you are just there for a short weekend as we were. I would recommend booking at least 3 days

88

before to get the 25% discount. In addition, there is also a facility in the reception area where you can buy your ski pass. This was very helpful as we were able to get ski passes in two minutes flat from the comfort of the hotel whilst the children enjoyed playing on the retro packman computer games that are cleverly placed for free of charge use in the bar area. These gave us lots of child-free moments so at the end of the weekend we felt we had had a proper break! For a busy family with three active children, Flaine and the Terminal Neige Totem offered us the perfect solution to getting on the piste for a relatively short period of time. The combination of ease of access along with a hotel that offered a fantastic balance between all of the best Alpine traditions in a modern and funky setting left us feeling like we had been away for far longer than the long weekend we had. My husband and I can’t wait to come back for a weekend part deux as the hotel clearly caters for this market amazingly too ‌ as we enviously noted! www.terminal-neige.com

SPOTLIGHT ON... THE COAST, Tarporley Best for...

W O R D S : K AT H R Y N O T T O

First class fish and seafood menu

I

t was a Friday evening as we arrived in the picturesque village of Tarporley and made our way to The Coast. We were greeted warmly at the door and taken to our table. As we sat down we took in the décor, which was stylish and beach inspired (hence the “The Coast” name), which merges perfectly with the first-class fish and seafood menu. We had a table towards the back of the restaurant, so we were in prime position to people watch, and we were amazed as to how busy it became so quickly. This is obviously a firm favourite with locals, and we were about to find out why. As it was Friday, I ordered a Sauvignon Blanc, Pacamaya, Chile (£22.00 a bottle) which was fresh and lively with an attractive floral character. Our drinks were brought to us very swiftly, and a member of staff took us through the impressive menu, offering suggestions on dishes that they would recommend. Starters were a selection of classic favourites such as prawn cocktail, duck liver parfait and meatballs and calamari. We opted for meatballs and Thai fishcakes, which both were a fair size. The meatballs were covered in a gorgeous rich tomato sauce, and the

96

fishcakes came accompanied with a delicious sweet chilli dip on the side. The mains on offer were classic pasta, pizza, salad, meat and fish dishes. I decided on the rack of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, fine green beans and an alluring Barolo jus, by far one of the best dishes I have tasted in a long time. A traditional Italian dish cooked superbly, the meat fell off the bone, the potatoes were soft but not overly creamy, and the jus was moreish, I still have cravings for it now. My partner chose the lasagne as recommended by the waitress and it didn't disappoint. The portion size was generous, and came accompanied with two ciabatta slices, again a classic Italian dish, but with character. We had no room for pudding however the waitress insisted we had to try one and thank goodness we did. A raspberry

and vanilla pannacotta was served to share, which was rich and sweet in flavour and creamy, topped with white chocolate. After the distraction of dinner, we took to people watching with a glass of wine and noticed that the restaurant had filled with a selection of couples having a night together along with a couple of tables of large parties celebrating birthdays. The atmosphere created by the lighting, the food, the staff and the customers were like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold night, leaving you with a warm, fuzzy feeling. It was at this point; we decided we would be back to take a trip along this coast. 67 High St, Tarporley CW6 0DP T: 01829 730785 www.thecoasttarporley.co.uk

MEET THE CHEF:

Alex Mackay

An inspiration behind Merchant Gourmet’s first cookbook Alex Mackay, TV chef and author, shares one of his favourite recipes from Merchant Gourmet’s The Pulses & Grains Cookbook

M

erchant Gourmet, the UK’s leading brand for grains and pulses, was founded back in 1995 by Mark and Oliver Leatham, brothers with a passion for exploring real food. Since then, the team has worked tirelessly to source the finest lentils, quinoa and wholegrains from across the world and to create nutritious range of product for its consumers. This year, Merchant Gourmet has taken its ready-toeat pulses and wholegrainbased brand, along with its quick, easy and tasty recipes, and created a treat for all in the shape of its first ever cookbook. Alex Mackay, Guild of Food Writers award winning author, has worked with Merchant Gourmet for almost two decades, and was an inspiration towards the initial concept of creating the cookbook. He explains that the vision behind the cookbook was to reflect the brand’s mantra: providing wholesome ingredients along with inspiring, accessible and creative recipes that everyone can make. Merchant Gourmet partnered with Quadrille to publish this beautiful book that incorporates the brand’s well-known contemporary design.

From freekeh porridge with poached pears to lamb chops with mint, pomegranate couscous and pistachio pesto – Merchant Gourmet’s aim is to introduce as many people as possible to the many virtues of pulses and grains, and to help these ingredients become a part of their everyday cooking repertoire. Alex is immensely proud of his longstanding partnership with Merchant Gourmet and has selected Shakshuka with Lentils and Feta as one of his favourite dishes to share with Cheshire Magazine. He believes it’s a great, versatile meal that you can create for breakfast, lunch or dinner and its vibrant colour and flavour never disappoints. This dish is a prime example of how versatile and delicious Merchant Gourmet’s pulses, grains and chestnuts can be. The hearty and spicy vegetable stew is inspired by the one-pot Middle Eastern cuisine. Beluga lentils, which gets their name from their resemblance to beluga caviar, add that extra bit of protein to keep you fuller for longer. Don’t forget the sourdough bread to soak up the extra juices! Merchant Gourmet’s The Pulses & Grains Cookbook is available to purchase now on Amazon and selected Waterstones stores. INGREDIENTS SERVES 4 PEOPLE 1 onion 3 cloves of garlic 2 tbsp olive oil 1 large jar of flame-roasted red peppers (280g drained weight) ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 tbsp tomato purée 2 tbsp harissa 1 x 400g can of chopped tomatoes 1 x 250g pouch of ready cooked Beluga Lentils 4 free-range eggs 4 tbsp natural yoghurt or labneh 30g feta, crumbled 3 tbsp finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley salt and black pepper

METHOD Shakshuka with Lentils and Feta

1

TO SERVE: toasted sourdough bread

2 3

Peel and finely slice the onion and garlic. Heat the oil in a wide, shallow pan or large frying pan over a medium heat, add the onion and garlic and fry for about 6 minutes until the onion has softened and started to caramelize. Drain the peppers, reserving the liquid for the sauce. Slice the peppers into 1cm wide strips. Add the paprika, tomato purée and harissa to the pan and cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and liquid from the pepper jar, followed by the sliced peppers and lentils. Season with salt and pepper and give everything a good stir, then cook for 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4 5

Make 4 indentations in the sauce with the back of a large spoon and crack an egg into each. As you add them to the hot sauce, the eggs should hold their shape but don’t worry if one breaks or sinks as it will still all taste delicious! Cover the pan with a lid if you have one and cook for about 10 minutes or until egg whites are just set. Serve topped with the yoghurt or labneh, the crumpled feta and chopped parsley. Accompany with toasted sourdough bread.

Lost wills: Ensuring your legacy is secure Heather Roberts, Associate Solicitor in the Manchester Will, Trust and Estate Disputes team at Irwin Mitchell, explores the issues

E

ven with today’s technology, lost wills can occur. There is no central will registry and with an ever-changing legal landscape, tracking down an original will can be very difficult – especially if the will was created some time ago. At an already emotional time, you may also be facing a situation where the will designed to safeguard the family home, business or other assets has gone missing. All reasonable efforts should be made to try and find the original will. “Reaching out to friends, family and advisors is a good starting point and trying to establish a paper trail may also help,” Heather explained. “Finding the original document will save a potentially time-consuming and costly process in the future.” But what if the original will is nowhere to be found? Being part of the Will, Trust and Estate Disputes team, Heather frequently sees cases involving disputes over missing wills. She advises that finding evidence that the original will was made can be a great help. “If it’s possible to obtain a solicitors’ file, a copy of the will or even a handwritten note made by the deceased concerning the will, an application can be made to the Probate Registry without the original will.” Where an original will was in the custody of the deceased and cannot be found after their death, there is a legal presumption that the will was destroyed by the deceased with an intention to revoke it. However, this presumption can be overturned in circumstances where evidence exists to suggest that there is a more probable reason for the will being missing. The court will assess the

104

available evidence and ask itself: is the most likely explanation for the will being missing that the deceased destroyed it with the intention of revoking it? In the absence of any evidence, the presumption will apply. What counts as evidence in this situation? Any sort of records by the deceased or copy wills or oral evidence of conversations with the deceased could be vital pieces of evidence in these situations. “If there’s any sort of letter or record by the deceased about the existence of the will and their intentions for it, then this acts as primary evidence that the original wasn’t destroyed,” said Heather. This means it may be possible to use a copy of the will for securing probate, but only if the evidence is strong enough. The best way to prevent this scenario would be to store the original will at the solicitors’ office which drew up the document. “It’s the safest place to keep a legal document,” Heather explained, “Plus the solicitor will be very used to the process.” Telling family, friends or any advisors where your will is stored is helpful for those dealing with your estate. “It’s not a nice thing to think about, but easy access to your will is so important for your family or friends.” Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth’s Will, Trust and Estate Disputes team has a national capability and can assist you with your concerns over missing wills, as well as a range of other probate, trust and estate disputes. BUSINESS MAG invests £1 billion into Manchester Airport

Passenger numbers reach record levels

Manchester Airport Group aims high with its latest expansion plans at MAN

BY JOE WORHTINGTON

M

anchester Airport Group (MAG), the owner of Manchester, Stansted and East Midlands airports and headquartered at Manchester Airport employs almost 38,000 people across the UK, 19,000 at Manchester alone. Over 58 million passengers passed through the three airports last year, and the combined airports serve over 390

destinations around the world. As the largest and most important airport for the north, MAG is undertaking a £1 billion transformation programme at Manchester Airport including a 150% expansion of Terminal 2, increased overnight parking spaces to 59, a new pier set to open in April and two more piers opening in 2022 and 2024. Terminal 1 will be decommissioned in the coming years. A new private terminal, ‘PremiAir’, is opening in the middle of this year. Operated by MAG, the small terminal will be located to the north of Runway 1 and will offer a more private and relaxing passenger experience – no private jet required! MAG is aiming to the skies with its expansion plans at Manchester, and with an ever-increasing catchment area encompassing over 22 million potential passengers living within a 2-hour drive of the airport, and new direct flights to Guangzhou, Delhi and Shanghai in the offing for the next two years, the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme aims to bring the technical runway capacity of 55 million passengers into reality.

‘P MAG is an important contributor to Greater Manchester council budgets

T

he public-private ownership structure of MAG, unique in the UK’s aviation sector, means that the local councils of Greater Manchester – Manchester, Salford, Oldham, Wigan, Thameside, Rochdale, Trafford, Stockport, Tameside and Bolton – benefit from increased passenger footfall and profits at the group’s three airports. In the 2017-18 financial year, MAG reported an operating profit of £217.1m, a 4.4% increase on the previous year. This increased profit can largely be attributed to an increase in passenger numbers to 58.9m across the three airports, and total revenue increasing by 9.8% to £814.3m. A combined dividend of £71.4m was shared between the 10 councils who own two-thirds of the airport group last year, with the remaining £39.3m going to IFM Investors, an Australian investment fund which owns a third of MAG.

remiAir’, the name for the private terminal that is set to open north of Runway 1 at Manchester Airport later this year, will bring a more bespoke and exclusive passenger experience within reach of all passengers. The small terminal experience will offer a more luxurious place for departing and arriving passengers to wait, a step up from the premium lounges inside the main terminals. MAG is hoping to attract passengers to the private terminal with promises of uninterrupted runway views, menus using the finest local produce, private security screening and a personalised service. Passengers are also being offered luxury transfers to and from the aircraft. For departing passengers, the priority package will include access to the private

terminal lounge, complimentary food and drinks and a transfer to the aircraft. Arriving passengers who choose the PremiAir experience will be greeted at the aircraft, fast tracked through passport control, and lounge access in the private terminal whilst awaiting their luggage. The terminal will be open to passengers travelling to any destination, on any airline, and in any travel class. The prices have not yet been set but prices are likely to start at £50 each time passengers use the new terminal. The PremiAir experience will bring Manchester in line with Heathrow and Dublin airports, although their private terminals are only open to passengers travelling in specific classes on certain airlines. There are also plans to introduce similar terminal experiences at Stansted and East Midlands in the future.

L

ast month we wrote about adopting a pet but after you’ve worked out what kind of dog would suit your lifestyle and your family the best, how do you go about buying a puppy from a breeder? Horror stories abound about dodgy dealers but here’s some top tips to help you on your journey: • Various schemes such as The Kennel Club’s Assured Breeder Scheme are great places to start as they register and monitor the breeders and puppies but not all good breeders are enrolled. (It doesn’t cover non-pedigrees like the Labradoodle and Cockapoo) There are various things you can do, however, to ensure you pick a responsible dog breeder. • The breeder in question should be open and transparent – allowing you to visit, return and ask as many questions as necessary so that you can see first hand how all the dogs are kept and how their needs are met. • All the dogs should be healthy and the breeder should be able to talk to you about any issues they have had to deal with in their breed lines. They should also have a good relationship with the local vets. Indeed, they should be incredibly enthusiastic about their chosen breed, traits, tendencies to help you in your decision. • Responsible breeders should provide references on request as well as genuine paperwork and support you after the sale in the care of your pup. • The RSPCA has an amazing website to help you on your journey to adding a new member to the family along with downloadable checklists. The website is well worth a visit. Good luck! www.rspca.org.uk

Indulgent ways to

Spoil your Mum this

Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day fast approaching, The Cheshire Magazine team took their Mum’s for an early surprise celebration

Spa Day The idyllic Grosvenor Pulford Hotel & Spa was the choice of venue for Kat Hannon and her Mum, Pauline

Kat says “They have everything at The Grosvenor Pulford, Spa and Hotel, a stunning Palm Court restaurant and a pub! With Chester only up the road, it’s the perfect venue to combine a spa weekend with shopping. The location was beautifully set in the countryside and only a stone’s throw from Chester aswell as bordering onto North Wales and all its glory. As we pulled up we took in the beautiful old period building. At reception there was a contemporary glass feature which made for a stunning entrance which really set the tone. As we arrived at the Spa The staff extremely lovely and gave us the best experience. They were very informative and kept us topped up with waters, herbal teas and anything good for our bodies! As soon as you walk into the Spa it is dark, with little twinkly lights and water running. The smells of the oils hits you in the waiting room, making you anticipate what’s to come. The Spa was gorgeous and immediately puts you in a relaxed state. The use of the pool and hot tub were lovely features to add to the spa day and made it a more complete experience for me. We had a joint massage experience, (which I haven’t done before), which made the trip extra special as we experienced the treatment together. Following our spa we headed to Palm Court for dinner, which was incredible. The decor alone puts a smile on my face: a beautiful blend of feature lighting merged with foliage and water trickling sounds from the indoor water feature. An epic feature is the self-playing piano, which just so happened to play a song very close to my heart. So I knew I was in the right place.”

Kat’s Mum said “I was thrilled at the news of being treated to an early Mother’s Day spa and excited to try the Grosvenor Pulford as I am a regular spa goer and had yet to visit there. The hotel and spa are set in the countryside, only a short drive from the elegant city of Chester. A relaxing massage was long overdue, and the spa offered everything I needed. Kat and I had a Hot Stone Massage. The masseuse explained she was using Balinese stones bathed in the Frangipani Monoi Body Oil to work deep into my muscles, getting into areas of tension. My skin felt hydrated and I felt completely relaxed. I then had a Elemis Touch: Skin Solutions Facial in which my masseuse explained “targeted treatments will gently but firmly take on the challenges of sensitivity, oiliness and dullness for healthier complexions.” After the treatments we used the rest of the spa which included 3 relaxation rooms, a couple’s VIP suite, traditional Hamman, a Roman/ colonnaded style swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna. After enjoying the spa, we changed and went to dinner. Located within an impressive conservatory bursting with the greenery of the Kentia Palm tree and filled with the calming sounds of bubbling fountains; Palm Court is a garden room restaurant unlike any other. The restaurant offers quality British and European cuisine, and we had a gorgeous meal topped off with wine.” www.grosvenorpulfordhotel.co.uk

Weekend Away

Richard Harisson treated his Mum, Sally to an overnight stay at Seaham Hall Hotel one of the most luxurious spa hotels in County Durham. Situated amidst 37 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens in a striking cliff top location, this immaculately restored Georgian country house fuses contemporary luxury with classical elegance to create a truly unforgettable five-star experience.

Richard says “Upon arrival to Seaham Hall Hotel I knew me and my mum were in for a treat! The grand entrance with the swirling vortex water feature was incredibly impressive. We were checked in by a very welcoming receptionist called Jade, and as we were a little early, had a coffee in the bar area over-looking the perfectly manicured gardens. We were very lucky with the weather, it was cold but not a cloud in the sky, and the sun gleamed over the hotel and gardens. We were then given an in-depth tour of the hotel by the hotel’s porter, Tony who showed us various decadent function rooms and walked us down to the hotel’s spa which was stunning. Tony also gave us a few unique insights into the hotel’s history including the wine cellar that has a secret tunnel out to the sea and also told us about the sea glass that washes up on the nearby beach. We then were shown to our room which was an elaborate executive suite with separate sitting room and a huge modern bathroom. We ventured down to the spa after having a relax in the room. I had booked my Mum in for a surprise treatment, so decided to also treat myself to a full body massage. My deep tissue massage was perfect, and my back felt brand new afterwards. After the spa Connor invited us to enjoy drinks in the bar lounge area and sampled some of the delicious cocktails. We were then led to dinner in the Byron restaurant and were served by Luke who helped us with choosing our meals. I had grilled quail to start and roasted duck to follow. For dessert I had honey and pistachio tart which was incredible sweet and delicious. Overall this hotel is exceptional and the staff all made our stay extra special. I will definitely be back.”

114

Richard’s Mum said “Anyone who goes to this hotel and spa is in for a treat. It truly is a five-star experience. We were shown to our beautiful suite by Tony who was very informative and professional, showing us how to use the different lighting and temperature settings to ensure the ambience to each room was to our liking. He didn’t miss anything out. The rooms had everything you could want for your stay and the decor was immaculate. The spa experience was our next delight where I had a nails and eyebrows treatment and again the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Following our pre-dinner drinks in the bar Connor showed us to our table in the restaurant. To start I chose the Goosnargh chicken ravioli with celeriac, lovage and hazelnuts, all the flavours complimented each other perfectly. For the main course I had the roasted Suffolk lamb, slow cooked carrots and braised barley, cooked to my liking. For my dessert I had the salted caramel tart with cultured cream, chocolate ganache and chestnuts, a dessert lovers dream. The management at this hotel and spa should be very proud of all their staff, they are all extremely polite and helpful and would try and do everything to make your stay at this hotel memorable. If someone asked the question would I go back to this hotel and spa, the answer is most definitely, yes.” www.seaham-hall.co.uk

Night Away & Spa by Day Built in 1816 for the wealthy William Hilton Cooke, Rookery Hall Hotel & Spa in Nantwich, Cheshire was the chosen venue for Craig Hough and his Mum, Beverley

Craig says “Every son loves to treat their Mum, so I wanted to plan to go somewhere with a reputation for incredible dining, with a luxury spa, and somewhere just far enough that it warranted an overnight stay. Rookery Hall was the definitive option. As we arrived at the grounds my Mum’s face lit up at the unique Grade II listed Georgian style country mansion. After a warm greeting from the staff and a short show-around, my Mum went for her treatment as I kicked back with coffee in the Spa lounge. Once she was done, we sat and grabbed a delicious light lunch before

settling in pool side. After a quick check in, we freshened up and headed down to dinner. Our host was incredibly welcoming and showed us into the Terrace Restaurant where you can see how the owners have restored the room to its original grandeur. The 2 AA Rosettes awarded restaurant uses local ingredients and their dishes were as tasteful as the surroundings. The menu offered classic British cuisine enhanced with a contemporary twist. I opted for a melt-in-the-mouth English lamb rump with potato terrine, salt baked celeriac, wild mushroom covered in a roast lamb jus. I ordered a couple of sides to complete the meal. For desert I opted for the hot chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. After dinner we retired to the Drawing Room and were surrounded by original family owners of the property, whose portrait adorns the wall. it was a cosy place to unwind and talk in front of the open fire. After a great night’s sleep, Mum and I set off home, having spent some lovely quality time together. “ 116

Craig’s Mum said “When Craig called to say we were going to Rookery Hall I was excited as it was much needed. I hadn’t been to a spa for a while so was more than ready to unwind. The staff were incredibly welcoming and showed us round and talked me through my treatment. I opted for the shoulder neck and back massage. I entered the dimly lit room, with soft music playing in the background, and immediately felt at ease. It was a deeply therapeutic massage focusing on the aches and pains in my back, and eliminated tension knots in the shoulders. It was wonderful, and the member of staff was incredibly informative and offered advice on what she was doing, and the products she was using. After my treatment we settled down for lunch where I had ham terrine for a starters and noodles as a main, finished off with a crispy glass of Champagne. I was in my element. After a few hours in the Spa we headed for dinner. I opted for the delicious stone bass fillet, Colcannon potato, braised baby gem, spinach, tomato, fish cream. Post dinner I enjoyed a chilled drink by the fire, which was the perfect end to a perfect evening. Having had the massage earlier in the day, I sunk into bed and had one of the best night’s sleep I’ve had all year. I had a lovely, relaxing experience, and I am already looking to book my next trip.” www.handpickedhotels.co.uk/ rookeryhall

Firs Fest Is Back The Firs School Chester get creative WORDS BY MARY JANE GREENHALGH

T

he Firs Prep School is recognised as one of Cheshire’s leading Independent co-educational Primary schools, offering high-quality education for boys and girls aged from 2-11. Most importantly it is recognised as one of the happiest schools. The school seeks to find every child’s unique gifts and talents and ensure they are provided with an extensive range of activities, equipment and support to help them reach their potential. All year six pupils go on to their first choice of secondary schools such as King’s, Queen’s, Abbeygate, Ellesmere College and Packward, as well as to Caldy and West Kirby Grammar. In addition to the successful academic record and the exceptional pastoral care, The Firs School prides itself on focusing on various programmes/activities which are not curriculum-based, such as the Gifted and talented programme, which works to further a child’s more academic abilities to the highly popular ‘Extra Extra’ programme. All designed to encourage the whole school to try a variety of activities so that children can find their passion. These activities range from gardening,

outdoor forest school, looking after the school guinea pigs, gymnastics, arts such as sewing and pottery, to languages and music. This unique approach ensures that all children, regardless of their academic standards, feel they have a talent they can nurture and feel happy, confident and optimistic about life. Most recently the school celebrated its annual ‘Firs Fest’ week, in which the entire school came off their usual curriculum and had the opportunity to study one special topic. This year the chosen subject was the Creative

the Creative Arts enjoyed by all the year groups. The assembly consisted of drama, drum and storytelling, singing, House of Dance performances and a fabulous display of all the amazing artwork produced by the various year groups. The exhibition of artwork was officially opened by Matt Baker, well known Chester based director, composer and performer, and local Chester artist Julie Mitchell. Arts with a story theme. In the past, the school has studied Winter Wildlife, the history of Chester, and the wonder of Science and Maths in everyday life. Once again the whole school got involved in the Creative Arts themed week, from the two-year-old pre-school/Kindergarten children to Year 6. Pupils spent their time getting involved with different areas of Creative Arts from dance, singing and drama to painting, mosaics and drumming. The fabulous week culminated in a special assembly to showcase

While our school is consistently ranked as the top performing school in the North West based on GCSE and A-Level results, those who know us understand what really makes Withington special cannot be tested or measured. arrow & Ball has revealed two of its must-have colours to update your home in 2019: De Nimes and Sulking Room Pink. Joa Studholme, colour curator, says the former “is ultimately fashionable but always feels grounded. A complex blue, it is perfect for those who are wary of moving into a world of colour because it still has a familiar underlying grey tone which is more visibly apparent in spaces with low light.” The latter meanwhile she describes as “the colour that we have all been looking for. An intriguing mix that sates our desire for both grey and pink. It feels both down to earth as well as a little romantic.” Both herald the trend to move away from neutral shades in favour of introducing bolder tones. www.farrow-ball.com

A SPRING IN HER STEP Jacqueline Milton has added to her fabrics with a new collection called Melbury Lane. The Honeysuckle pattern in saffron stands out in particular as it’s perfect for this time of year. She says of her inspiration: “I love how honeysuckle fills the gaps in the hedgerow. As you walk along the lanes the scent is amazing, especially on a warm summer’s evening. I enjoy adding insects to my designs and if you look very closely, you will see I have painted some ladybirds along the stems.” £52 per m, www. jacquelinemilton.co.uk

This spring, why not brighten up your home with a bunch of blooms from Serenata Flowers? Arranged by floral artists and hand-delivered, they’re perfect for adding that seasonal touch to any home. What’s more, if you’ve not yet thought about Mother’s Day on 31 March, they make for a perfect gift. www.serenataflowers.com

LIFE IN DESIGN

Simon

EVANS The founder of interior design practice, Design by UBER, delights in crafting interiors which abound with creativity and are created with both environment and lifestyle in mind

How would you describe your design style?

We have to be creative chameleons in order to fulfil our clients’ dreams so it’s important to actually be an extension of our client’s style rather than prescribing a look that might not suite their personality or lifestyle. Personally I guess I’m a lot more understated at home than people expect. For me it’s about stylish comfort, a home that is filled with objects that represent purpose and soul, each with their own part to play in harmony with their surroundings.

What is the easiest way to transform a space? What inspired you to create your design business?

I’d say the overarching factor and principle influence in my life has been travel. Through that I’ve always been overwhelmed with ideas, collecting materials and palettes that I don’t see in my day to day. Being able to use these to create unique spaces and to work with like minded people who are prepared to push boundaries is ultimately the most creatively rewarding job I can imagine.

Creating mood is an art in itself and is one of the first things I try to consider. I love to use lighting and textures as the foundations of a great ambience.

What do you see as being the design trends this year?

Whilst we see trends come and go in the industry it’s much more important to consider timeless elegance when designing the key components of a home. The use of quality materials is far more important than attempting to be bang on trend.

“Creating mood is an art in itself and is 132

Homes and Interiors

What’s your favourite architectural style?

Professionally we don’t have an in-house style, we have amassed a team of really talented creatives each with their own fortes, from period properties to contemporary architecture and everything inbetween, it’s literally a melting pot of talent. Personally, I love to combine different styles - what could be better than the charm of chunky beams, log fires and period features with uninterrupted views through ultrasleek minimalist glazing. The perfect way to bring the outside in.

Can you describe your average weekend?

Following a hectic week which can involve a lot of travel there’s nothing better than escaping to the tranquillity of home where there’s always a fire crackling away, a glass of something nice and the chance to catch up with my kids who I don’t get to see until the weekend. I love to cook so that’s usually a big part of my weekend as well as playing football on Saturdays and some exercise training to kick start my Sunday.

If you had just one item in your design toolbox, what would it be?

Visualisation. The power to show photo real images of our work before a single brick is laid is so incredibly powerful, it’s a huge USP to have this in house and to create unlimited perspectives of our schemes.

If you could banish something from the world of design, what would it be?

Plagiarism. If only everything we created as designers was entirely unique, the world would be a hugely eclectic gallery of creativity, representing every aspect of our personalities the world over. Deisgn by UBER, Chelford Road, Ollerton, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 8RY | t:0333 220 5550 www.designbyuber.com

What’s your favourite colour and why?

It has to be blue. I just think it can be one of the most tranquil colours and in some tones, the most vibrant. It’s an emotive colour too, reminiscent of clear blue skies and Caribbean seas.

one of the first things I try to consider” 133

ocated in Cheshire’s “golden triangle”, the Wilmslow is the final home available at the exclusive, intimate development and is ready to move into, with carpets, curtains and light fittings, plus turf to rear garden. Arriving at the exclusive enclave of 10 substantial properties, it’s clear to see why the homes earned the seal of approval from judges in the Northern Design Awards, earning a place on the shortlist of the residential development category in the 2018 awards. Elan has tastefully redeveloped a former garden centre site, creating bespoke housetypes, designed specifically to sympathise with the character of the site and help integrate into the neighbourhood. For example, the five-bedroom Wilmslow, offers 2,009 sq ft of carefully considered living space, designed very much with modern family living in mind. Step inside the welcoming hallway and you will feel a sense that you have arrived. Throughout the property, large windows and doors, plus high ceilings add a great amount of light, emphasising the sense of space. Recognising that digital connectivity is now a necessity for discerning buyers, it features a future-ready

hidden Smart home system – a hidden wire high speed digital multi-room entertainment and communications systems that can be customised. The dual aspect lounge spans from the front to the rear, the perfect place to sit back and relax. French doors lead from this inviting space out to the rear garden. The relaxing ambience of the lounge is complemented by the sociability of the open plan combined kitchen, breakfast area and family room, which is very much the focal point for family living. There’s also a formal dining room, perfect for entertaining. A utility and cloakroom complete the ground

floor. Upstairs, both the master and second bedroom have an en-suite, leaving the family bathroom to serve the remaining three bedrooms. Located on Moor Lane, homes at The Larches are close to good and outstanding schools, high street and boutique stores, plus a good choice of dining options. It’s a great base for commuting to Manchester city centre, which can be reached in around 20 minutes by train, or 40 minutes by car; while the Cheshire countryside is also within easy reach. CASE STUDY

Built From The Grounds Up: Coffee At Whitworth Locke Foundation Coffee House by NoChintz moves into a new neighbourhood

F

oundation Coffee House is the portfolio space for creative studio NoChintz. It showcases their multi disciplinary approach and experience of delivering aspirational brands and spaces. The creative studio has a focus on interior design and branding, using a holistic approach to lead the way in the next generation of commercial ventures. Activating, attracting and retaining communities which define and re-position a neighbourhood. In 2015, NoChintz opened the doors to the first Foundation Coffee House. Located a stones throw from their studio in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. ‘Built from the grounds up’ is one of the coffee shops slogans and appears throughout the space; it epitomises the journey NoChintz undertook to get the business off the ground. From the naming, branding, interiors, project management, business development to operational set up – every detail was conceived, designed and delivered by the studio team. The influences which shaped the brand and the space draw back to the design studios interior architecture practices and Manchesters industrial past. The name Foundation is literally derived from the start of any build,

156

representing FDN Coffee as the starting point from which great things can happen – and its proving to be right! The space is littered with details such as bespoke brass ruler trims, bolt head tiling and exposed finishes which celebrate our industrial past and industrious ethos. The motto at Foundation is ‘Coffee is Everything’. This is because coffee is at the heart of everything that the brand does, and it informs the approach to everything that FDN Coffee has to offer: with quality, consideration and constant refinement. That’s not to say coffee is all that they have on offer. Key to the brand is creating an environment where people can eat, drink, meet or shop. Design led spaces create a backdrop where people can socialise, host meetings, showcase artworks, hold workshop, learn about coffee and more with a high quality menu of the finest coffee, cocktails, brunch and cakes to compliment. In 2018, NoChintz opened the second location for Foundation Coffee House; this time located within the ground floor of design led Aparthotel brand ‘Locke Hotels’ flagship hotel Whitworth Locke. Foundation Whitworth is surrounded by individuals whom share a passion for creating experiences which are accessible for all. Where creativity is allowed to lead and drive forwards a successful venture. Underpinned by the same focus on a coffee centred menu and packed diary of events and activations. The design is a continuation of the Northern Quarter space and tells the story of how the brand has matured and become more confident as it has established itself as one of the best coffee destinations in the North West. Considered details such as bolt head tiling, etched mottos, bespoke lighting and exposed finishes celebrate the cities industrial past and the studios industrious ethos. In 2019, NoChintz will continue to nurture and grow Foundation Coffee House, opening new sites, developing creative programming and constantly refining products and menus to ensure a leading hospitality experience is maintained which is accessible to all. www.nochintz.co.uk

PROMOTION

Q&A

The Inside Track on Work at Malpas Site manager Steve Wood talks about what makes a successful development and his aims for the future of the site How long have you worked at Bovis Homes and in the housing industry? I joined Bovis Homes in July but have been a site manager for 22 years. How would you sum up your role in one sentence? My role as site manager is to produce quality homes for all my customers and to make a safe and enjoyable working environment for the people working on my building site. What makes Hampton Lea stand out from other newbuild locations? Hampton Lea is a wonderful spot to build quality new homes with fantastic views of the Cheshire countryside, combined with the quality village life of Malpas. The neighbourhood is peaceful and quiet but also just a short drive to Wrexham or Chester, should home buyers want a bit more excitement! What house types are available at Hampton Lea? We are building two and three-bedroom social properties plus a wide range of three, four and five-bedroom homes, so we literally have a new property for everyone. How would you sum up a Bovis Home in one sentence? A Bovis Home, for me, is someone’s biggest purchase, so we do everything we can to make their purchase special. 160

What can visitors and home buyers at Hampton Lea expect from the Bovis Homes there? All visitors and purchasers get a warm welcome and we are happy to show visitors our site. If they are a buyer, we are also happy to provide updates on the build progress of their property, including inviting them to the site and taking photographs as their home is built. How often are you in touch with customers at Hampton Lea? We are constantly in touch with our clients. We like to be available to our customers, even if it’s just to say good morning. They know where we are, if they ever need us. In our short time here, we have moved in a number of home buyers. They all seem to be happy new homeowners who wave as they drive past or chat as we walk by. Long may that continue. How would you describe your team at Hampton Lea? My team consists of my long-term assistant, Paul, who has worked with me for many years, although he insists everyone calls him “Woody” (even his wife calls him Woody). I have a new forklift driver on location and an agency labourer, Matthew, who has worked on site since before I started. We have now sent him an offer of employment as he has impressed us so much. We have taken on some new contractors since we arrived and feel all of us are working together to produce the best homes we can. What’s happening next at the location? The location is currently undergoing a re-plan for the remaining properties, including the new Bovis Homes housing range, which we are all excited about. What is your overall aim for Hampton Lea as site manager of the location? The plan for Hampton Lea is to complete the build by the end of 2019. Our aim is to leave a legacy for Malpas of quality new homes in a rural environment, with happy and contented customers. www.bovishomes.co.uk
