My life ... BETH TWEDDLE MBE, FOUNDER OF BETH TWEDDLE GYMNASTICS

How would you describe yourself ? Passionate and determined. Where is home? And work? I am now based in West Lancashire and my work head office is in Bury. What did you want to be when you were younger? When I was younger I always wanted to be a physiotherapist. I had a place to start at University but decided to focus on my business. Name a few of your favourite places to be… Home, I love being around my family and I am looking forward to being allowed to spend time with my immediate family once restrictions are eased. With my friends, it doesn’t matter where we are just being able to spend some time with them. Similar to spending time with my family, I am looking forward to restrictions easing and being able to see

“Giving the next generation of children the opportunity to try gymnastics is what I’m most passionate about and I really can’t wait to open our doors” them. Family and friends mean everything to me. I love going back to Bunbury where I grew up. What or who inspires you? When I was younger, Kelly Holmes and Paula Radcliff. They achieved so many amazing things throughout their career but had ups and downs in their journey which inspired me to want to achieve my dreams even if it was an up and down journey. Also, my parents. They have helped me throughout everything and are always there when I need them. What was the last gift you gave someone? My mum for her birthday. They love going for meals and given the restrictions, they have been unable to, so I bought an At Home with Moor Hall, which is a fantastic Michelin Starred restaurant. Tell us a secret/fun fact? I like things organised so all my books/DVDs (I know old school with still having DVDs) etc are in alphabetical order. Who or what would you place in room 101? People who are consistently late. What’s been your biggest life lesson? Never to give up. It can take a while to achieve/realise dreams, but it is worth it in the end.

8

As Britain’s most successful gymnast which title brought you most joy? Winning my Olympic medal. Without all of the other medals that I achieved, the Olympic medal would not have been possible, but it was so special to win an Olympic medal at a home Games in front of a home crowd and all of my friends and family. What do you enjoy on a treat day? A mixture of things really. I think the fun part is having something different every time. I love ice cream, raspberry ripple flavour. You are all set to launch a new industry-leading gymnastics programme at Abbey Gate College in Chester – what made you choose Chester? Chester is where I grew up, so for me it’s really special and amazing that I’m able to offer local children the opportunity to try gymnastics for themselves. Giving

the next generation of children the opportunity to try gymnastics is what I’m most passionate about and I really can’t wait to open our doors. What can up and coming gymnasts expect from the programme? The programme will be a chance to learn fundamental gymnastics skills, alongside further values such as friendship, courage and determination. Children aged 2 - 7 on our programme will first work through our Beth Tweddle Gym Stars awards scheme where they can learn the basic fundamental moves of the sport, have fun, make new friends and achieve badges, certificates and stickers on the way. Our children aged 8+ will then work through the Beth Tweddle Academy awards and can train for up to 2 hours a day, once a week. www.bethtweddlegymnastics.co.uk

A Birthday Celebration

To celebrate the 95th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen, Royal Collection Trust has produced this official range of commemorative chinaware

A

SHAUN JEFFERS / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

range of official chinaware produced by Royal Collection Trust has gone on sale to celebrate the 95th birthday of Her Majesty The Queen on 21 April 2021. Each item is made by hand in Stoke-on-Trent using methods and techniques that have remained unchanged for 250 years. From the development of initial designs and creation of individual moulds, to the hand-finishing with 22-carat gold and manufacture of the special packaging, the production process encompasses the skills of over 50 individuals from several factories at the heart of the English Potteries. The central feature of the design is the Royal coat of arms above a garland of roses, shamrocks and thistles, the National Emblems of the United Kingdom, surrounded by pink roses. The design was inspired by the pink roses growing in the East Terrace Garden at Windsor Castle which bloom in June, the month of The Queen’s official birthday. The delicate border designs follow a l’oeil-de-perdrix or partridge-eye pattern, inspired by the decoration of Sèvres porcelain in the Royal Collection. The official commemorative range includes a mug (£25.00), pillbox (£35.00), tankard (£40.00), side plate (£40.00) and teacup and saucer (£65.00). A range of limited-edition commemorative pieces will be introduced in the coming months. A complementary range of traditional commemorative items has also gone on sale, including a corgi hanging decoration (£18.95), a tea caddy (£9.95) and cotton tea towels (£9.95 each) that are printed in Northern Ireland. Shortbread (£10.95) is made in Scotland, while rose and almond biscuits (£9.95) are made in Lancashire and sweets (£5.95) are made in Sheffield. The china can be purchased online from www.rct.uk/shop, and will be sold in Royal Collection Trust shops at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace and on Buckingham Palace Road, and at Royal Collection Trust shops at Windsor Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, when non-essential shops reopen in England and Scotland. 13

A Ritz

Love Affai ffairr Celebrating over two decades at the Ritz, London, Senior Advisor Andrew Love sits down with Craig Hough to discuss his daily dealing with the royals and further tales from his incredible career

D

esigned by French Architect CharlesFrederic Mewes and Englishman Arthur Davis in Louis XVl style, the Ritz Hotel was opened by Swiss Hotelier Cesar Ritz on 25th May 1906, but was not an immediate success, losing over £50,000 between May 1906 and July 1908, resulting in the appointment of a new manager, Theodore Kroell. At this time, room rates per night were 1 – 1½ guineas. The Ritz was made fashionable in 1911 with the patronage of the Prince of Wales, and the Hotel’s success followed. Film stars, including Douglas Fairbanks, actors and high society figures frequented the Hotel. In 1921, Earl Louis Mountbatten’s friend Charlie Chaplin had to be ushered inside the Regal Suite by 40 policemen to protect him from his fans. In the 1930’s the then Prince of Wales honed his dancing skills at The Ritz. During World War II, eminent royals enjoyed the social whirl at this hub for the aristocracy. After World War II The Ritz was owned for 30 years by the Bracewell-Smith family, who also owned the nearby Park Lane Hotel. In October 1995 the Hotel was purchased from Trafalgar House for £75 million by the Barclay twins Sir Frederick and Sir David, of the Ellerman Group

of Companies, owners of The Daily Telegraph. The Group spent £40 million and eight years in restoring The Ritz to its original grandeur, with sparkling chandeliers, and it was the first hotel to receive a Royal Warrant from Prince Charles.

“ Everyone is looking forward to getting back and serving our guests” 15

Mr Love, you have a long and successful career working at The Ritz London. Over the years The Ritz has hosted many famous guests from Charlie Chaplin and Roger Moore to Paul Getty and many more. What was the most unusual request you have had from a guest and how did you fulfil their wishes? There are guests that are demanding and guests that are less demanding. Most guest are less demanding, but sometimes they wish for eccentric things. Michael deCozar, who is our Head Concierge, was once asked to get some bath water from Brighton. Which in fact, he did do! What we do, we hope, is to make our guests stay private and comfortable, giving the service they expect from an iconic hotel, known as The Ritz. Any personal favourite guests? I suppose the most memorable guest was President Clinton. He was doing a book signing in Piccadilly and he was walking past an Afternoon Tea where someone was celebrating a birthday. He later walked back and recognised the lady and said to her “I understand it’s your birthday – happy birthday!” The lady said, “I’m

sure I know you” and he retorted “I’m President Clinton”. The guest wrote a lovely letter back to the hotel to say “It’s amazing who you meet when you go to Afternoon Tea at The Ritz”. We’ve had lots of lovely guests, it’s a very privileged place to work for me. Back in 2002, HM Queen Elizabeth II hosted a party on The Prince of Wales’s 54th birthday in The Ritz Restaurant and also held her 80th birthday celebrations in 2006. Do you have any memories you can share from royal events? Her Majesty The Queen has held several, notable functions with us and The Prince of Wales has also held a mutton lunch for Welsh farmers (back in 2006) when he was encouraging the public to eat mutton so it should not go to waste. Each event was a joyous occasion for all staff, and everyone is delighted. I am a royalist and those who I have met (from the family) I’ve found charming, and I am privileged to have met most of them. I admire the tireless work that they do. The Ritz in London is famous for its luxury and splendid catering services and in 2002 your hotel received a Royal Warrant for Banqueting and Catering Services. What special requirements need to be met to receive such an award?

16

changed, is historically The Ritz might have been thought to be have been for the elder generation or middle-older generation, but now we have a wonderful eclectic mix of people from youth to aged. Its lovely to see the way they join together. Everything is more based on providing the service. Our staff still wear long tails to serve in the Tea Room. It’s a little bit of glamour for some people – that is different. The award is given if you provide catering facilities to St James’s Palace or to Clarence House. You have to prepare a cocktail party for the palace, providing both the staff service and the product. Speaking of His Royal Highness, you will remember that he and Camilla HRH The Duchess of Cornwall were first photographed together (in January 1999) as a couple on the Ritz steps as they left a party. During the 23 years you have spent with the company, how do you feel the hotel has evolved to cater to the modern luxury market? If you consider that, the hotel was originally known as the first place that single ladies could go unchaperoned. A gentleman could take the lady to tea at The Ritz without her chaperone. The world has changed. Whilst we have maintained, in many ways the tradition of the hotel, the hotel is evolving in the sense of the wonderful mix of clientele of people. From people that come for treats to young people that come to experience something traditional - as we still maintain a dress code in the dining room and for afternoon tea. We offer an opportunity for younger people such as my children, who would normally dress down to go out, the option of dressing up and they find it quite refreshing. What is lovely about how it’s

Since its launch in 1906, The Ritz Hotel has remained open through many times of difficulty, including the two world wars. Last year, when the pandemic hit the UK, the hotel closed its door for the first time. What was the effect on the staff and business? If you have seen the ITV ‘Inside The Ritz Hotel’ documentary series, you will have seen one of special times of the year is Christmas. Unfortunately, because of the second lockdown, our guests were only able to enjoy the decorations for two weeks, which was very sad. We have been fortunate in that we have been able to keep all the staff and we look forward to reopening in May. The staff miss the people

“We’ve had lots of lovely guests, it’s a very privileged place to work for me” and the people miss the staff. What’s been apparent since the exit plan was announced is that bookings have been vibrant. Everyone is looking forward to getting back and serving our guests. The Ritz has been used on several occasions for filming (including the aforementioned documentary) and back in 2015, key scenes for the final episode of the acclaimed television drama’ Downton Abbey’ were filmed in The Ritz Restaurant with Lady Edith and Lady Rosamund. How was that experience for the team? The Ritz was also used for the film Notting Hill with Hugh Grant. Our concierge was involved in the filming and Julia Roberts was said to be staying. This was just before I started working there. A scene from the final episode of Downton Abbey was filmed at The Ritz (in December 2015). After filming the cast stayed for their wrap party and obviously our team loved it. We know (Downtown Abbey Creator) Lord Fellowes quite well, and the restaurant was typical of what he wanted for the final episode. With sustainability being a hot topic currently, what is The Ritz doing in terms of sustainability and your green footprint? We are doing a lot. We provide our guests with toiletries such as soap, shampoo, body wash etc

18

and when guests leave, we collect them all together and send them to a charity organisation called CleanConscience. The organisation collect together soap and toiletries are sorted, sanitised, repurposed and distributed to those in need of sanitation- there is no waste. We recycle all the food that we can and are very conscious of that. One of His Royal Highness Prince Charles’ main interests is sustainability and we are the only hotel that has his warrant so do our best to fulfil all of his commitments to sustainability. As hospitality venues across the UK set to re-open soon, what changes can guests expect at The Ritz? From our point of view will choose to carry on doing what we consider we do well and that is provide a service of privacy and confidence that guests will be safe within our hotel. We practise social distancing, reducing numbers inside the hotel and the one thing we want to ensure when speaking to guests is that they feel comfortable. We react and change as required to whatever the market place wants. The one thing I don’t think we will change is the traditional aspect of our staff and the courtesy shown. With your work commitments to The Ritz and numerous charity commitments, how do you spend your leisure time? What would be your ideal weekend off? Staying at home! I enjoy walking, I enjoy reading and I enjoy watching sport. I go to Lords (as and when you can go and watch cricket) but for my sins I am an Arsenal supporter. I find the opportunity to watch sport as a total relaxation from the concentration needed to keep everyone in the hotel happy. www.theritzlondon.com

5 Minutes with

Louise Kennedy Craig Hough meets Irish fashion designer Louise Kennedy to discuss her love for the business and her Spring Summer ‘21 collection

Where does your passion for fashion come from? I grew up in Ireland where my parents were both retailers so my passion for fashion ultimately comes for them. When I went to art college, I initially studied interior design before soon realising my real interest was design, so I moved courses swiftly to study fashion design. Fashion satisfies all my interests, from texture, colour, design and shape- it is where I feel most at home. What designers and business owners have inspired you and your business model ? This is a question I am frequently asked, and I always return to Manolo Blahnik as my hero in the design world. I have admired his work and his business for many, many years and each season I am reminded that he is the master of attention to detail. His work is timeless, and I can but marvel at the craftsmanship of his collections all marked out by their exquisite details. I think the Weston family are super impressive as business owners and champions of premium retail operations. Their business in Ireland, the Brown Thomas

Group recently acquired another department store, Arnotts, and the combination of how they satisfy all market segments is exceptional. In the UK, the Selfridges group is a world market leader, the same for their brands in the Netherlands, de Bijenkorf and Holt Renfrew in Canada. Alannah Weston, the groups creative director has a background in journalism, art and fashion- a potent mix for her current role. How would you describe your customer? Our customer base is international but in common with all our customers is their overriding interest in clothes that are stylish, purchased as investments to wear across many seasons, not just one. They appeal to a woman with a sophisticated eye for

22

intention to keep and wear a garment for many seasons before passing it to a family member or friend, perfectly intact. Quality ensures, never wasted. detail and an appreciation of fabrics, craftsmanship and classic styling. We can say with confidence, that once we meet a new customer, she tends to return each season to add to her Louise Kennedy wardrobe. That’s always so nice to see. What does a typical day look like? If it wasn’t for the pandemic, I could tell you a typical day involves a plan to travel overseas or to return home! Our partners in production are based in Italy, Portugal and India so studios must be visited to oversee each season’s production. We retail in the UK and North America so trips here are frequent to meet customers and plan new season campaigns. The past 12 months have meant I’ve been grounded in Dublin with some limited essential travel to London and I must admit it has not been bad! I’ve had time to draw breath each day, walk in my local neighbourhoods- in Dublin, that is magnificent Merrion Square and in London, it’s been Ennismore Gardens that reminded me how important it is to stop and relax for a period to soak up the nature all around us. It’s been good for my soul. In between my time is filled with zoom calls which I now really enjoy especially as we all dab hands now at selling virtually. There is truly a solution for every problem. What does sustainable fashion mean to you? Investment dressing is the very definition of sustainable fashion. Buying carefully with the

What was the inspiration for your Spring Summer ‘21 collection? The SS/21 collection is inspired by dreams of visiting the idyllic archipelago of islands, The Maldives and boasts bursts of therapeutic colours such as bold azure, duck egg blue, powder pink, ivory, and pure white – all of which perfectly contrasts with touches of midnight navy. It allows the Louise Kennedy woman to look forward to a bright future and enjoy the uplifted spirit of planning the summer wardrobe, that we all have so longed to do. Any favourite pieces? I adore our pretty and fun Freya silk printed chiffon dress, the structure of the Navy classic Gianna Jacket and our ever-popular Ivory Lily Knit that can be worn in summer and winter. Do you have any favourite areas in Cheshire to visit? I had a great Irish friend who once lived in Prestbury, so I visited the area many times and adored each visit. I am hugely interested in architecture so for me the fun was seeing such pretty houses and leafy lanes as well as enjoying some great shops and restaurants. We have some very loyal clients who live in Cheshire but shop with us in London so I might have to plan a visit there soon once we can all freely travel again! www.louisekennedy.com 23

a re Fore orev ver Craig Hough speaks to Will and Greg Powell, the Father and Son force behind Chester’s oldest independent jewellers

The name Powells is synonymous with Chester. Having opened your first independent shop together, on Chester’s historical Rows in 2002, you have since opened another 2 premises in the city. But your story actually goes back further as Greg’s parents (Joan & Dave) owned jewellers in Wales. Talk us through your family history that led you to opening in Chester city. Greg: My father grew up in Chester and moved to North Wales during the war. Having had shops in North Wales from the late 60’s, the bright lights of the city felt like a natural progression or the next step in order to grow the family business. I entered the business in the mid 70’s and split my time between working in the family business and being a goldsmith in the well renowned Hills workshop in Liverpool. At what point did Will join the family business – and how do you find working together? Greg: Will joined the business in the March of 2002 after a spell working for a financial marketing company in Scotland. Working together has its challenges as I am sure many father son teams would tell you. On the on the whole, I feel we make a good team. Oli had always expressed an interest in music and is

now a successful tour and production manager within that industry. The twins’ sister Georgia is based in London and has her own business specialising in curation and restoration of fine art with a business partner in Los Angeles together they help the add value to their customers collections. When taking over the former premises of well known jewellers G J H Browns (established in 1878), how important was it that you continued on with the building’s heritage? What was behind the decision to trade in the iconic building? Greg: Chester is well known for its jewellery shops, G J H Brown was long established, and we were fortunate to obtain the iconic building after they had closed their doors after having served the city well for well over 100 years. The

24

fabulous grade 2* building has an original spiral staircase spanning three floors and an open fireplace, both under conservation with English Heritage. The shop is small and lends itself to being a jewellery shop - why try and change something that works and has done for decades? We instantly fell in love with the building and settled in quite quickly. We didn’t make drastic changes, but we wanted to make it our own as well as do the necessary restoration work to enable us to reopen its doors. In 2010, you both opened a second store just around the corner from Powells Vintage Jewellery specialising in modern contemporary fine jewellery – what made you make the progression into this market? Will: The modern jewellery was something we had done along side the vintage jewellery around the corner on Eastgate Row, when the Bridge Street Row shop became available, we felt it was a good opportunity to separate the two and make more of an impact with each. GJH Brown had in fact occupied the Bridge Street unit until the property was sold and the linking doorway was bricked up to utilise two rentable units. The modern jewellery market is an ever-changing world led by fashion and trends. We make sure we have an up to date offering but also cater to the customers that appreciate a traditional, well-made piece of jewellery and the customer that desires a completely bespoke piece that really does stand out from the crowd. We are looking forward to a full refurbishment in the Bridge Street shop later this year.

Established in 1770, Lowe & Sons, based on Bridge Street Row is Chester’s oldest independent jewellers, and is believed to be the second-oldest independent jeweller in the country. What made you open a third business within the building in 2018 and what stories from its deep history can you share? Greg: Lowes was a shop Will and I had always admired, when there was talk of Lowes closing, we were very quick to express an interest. We both have a passion for design and craftsmanship and keeping Lowes alive was paramount, it has an amazing Victorian interior with so many original features and an ambience that one must experience to understand. Lowes has such a rich history of fine jewellery and silverware and a great reputation for antiques. The antique side was something I felt it had moved away from in its later years. Taking it on the main focus was to regain this reputation, which meant we now had separate outlets for antique, vintage and contemporary jewellery with a very different experience in each shop, all in the one city. I have a somewhat emotional attachment with Lowes for the very fact that my Father/Will’s Grandfather (Dave Powell) worked for Lowes as an apprentice watchmaker just after the Second World War. On his first day he was given an old

25

bike, he thought it was a test, but quickly discovered part of his new role included riding to the Eaton Estate every week to wind up all of the Duke’s clocks. How important is your business association with Chester Racecourse? Will: It is very important for us to be associated with successful local businesses and the Racecourse is ranked very highly amongst those. At Lowes we are very proud to have a long and happy relationship with Chester Racecourse. We have recently had their spectacular trophies in for engraving and cleaning. Since lockdown the seasonal fashion and retail industry at large has seen many casualties. The jewellery sector doesn’t seem to have been as affected as consumers seem to have prioritised investment pieces when purchasing jewellery. What are your thoughts on this – have you noticed the same trend? Will: The lockdown created casualties on a daily basis. We have had to be flexible in our approach to adapt as well as possible to online trading which is a challenge for our product. Pictures on a screen can’t replace the special feeling you get when wearing something that is the result of many hours of skilled craftsmanship. The investment market is strong as investors have seemed to be less affected by the pandemic. We’re fortunate to have such items in our stock as the past 12 months could have looked very different without them. What advice would you offer to readers looking to start investing money into antiques? Greg: Always buy with your heart, you cannot go wrong, you’ll know when something is right. Will: Some pointers to be aware of are to make sure your source is 26

reliable. The aim with an investment is to sell at some point so make sure the market exists for the product you’re purchasing. Do your own research and seek professional advice where available. With the world hopefully returning to some kind of normal soon, what can customers expect over the next 12 months from you? Greg: You can be reassured that we shall be working hard to maintain our customer experience, giving service to highest level, and continuing our quest to source the unique and interesting pieces which are the backbone of our business. Will: We have the excitement of the refurbishment of Powells Fine Jewellery. We also want our friends and customers to feel as safe as possible when visiting the businesses and the team will be doing everything possible to ensure that is the case. Finally, when you are not running three successful businesses, what do you do in your spare time? Where in Cheshire do you love to visit? Greg: Spending time with the family and cycling in Wales for the hills and onto the Wirral, often stopping at the Eureka Café, a favourite watering hole. Will: I love taking my three sons Charlie, Louie and Harri on adventures in the nearby countryside. Myself and my partner Carly enjoy skiing, this is something we are keen to get the boys involved with at as young an age as possible, we didn’t start skiing ourselves until our teens. I thoroughly enjoy playing a round of golf with friends when and wherever possible. A family favourite is La Fattoria we visit as frequently as possible. The three shops are situated on the rows in the centre of town overlooking The Chester Cross www.powellsewellery.com

Presenting the newest OMEGA timepieces for 2021

CONSTELLATION SMALL SECONDS Born in 1952, the Constellation has become OMEGA’s enduring symbol of beauty and precision. The iconic look we know today, with the distinguishing claws and half moon facets, first arrived in 1982, and has since become one of the world’s most recognised watch designs. This year, OMEGA is adding a new range of Small Seconds models to the collection, enhanced with extra diamonds and a number of unique details.

Overall Design

The watches, with a new 34 mm size, will be offered in a choice of 18K Sedna gold, stainless steel, or a combination of both. On top of each case, the bezels will feature engraved Roman Numerals, or a circle of 38 full-cut diamonds.

5th Generation Details

In keeping with the 5th generation Constellation makeover that was launched in 2018, all of the watch’s brushed components are complemented by polished bevelling along the casebody and bracelet, while a polished crown also adds to the slimline look. For the most essential Constellation feature, the famous claws are polished and bevelled, and integrated smoothly around the sides of the case.

Symmetrical Dial

Most noticeably, a special symmetry has been given to these new Small Seconds watches. Along with a round date window at 6H, OMEGA has used incremental diamonds for the hour markers, which have been placed in 18K gold holders, and arranged by size around the dial. Furthermore, OMEGA has added rings for the Small Seconds subdial, as well as the Central Minute Track. On some models, these rings are presented in 18K Sedna gold with the addition of delicate single-cut diamonds. Finally, the use of 18K Sedna gold or 18K white gold continues for the leaf-shaped hands, the Small Seconds hand, and the applied OMEGA logo and Constellation star.

Captivating Colours

Taking the Constellation in a vibrant new direction, each of these models is presented with a dial of exquisite colour. The first models to be revealed feature dials in sun-brushed burgundy, which exude a sense of luxurious heritage as well as sophistication. Other dials to follow in the collection will include mother-of-pearl, sun-brushed peacock blue or light chestnut.

Strap & Bracelets

While some of these Small Seconds timepieces will be set on colourful leather straps to match the dials, the full metal versions will include the Constellation’s legendary mono-rang bracelets. Featuring brushed links with polished central bars, the bracelets also have a butterfly clasp and easy comfort adjustment.

SEAMASTER

300

Time is precious on OMEGA’s latest Aqua Terra timepieces, which feature hour markers in diamonds or rubies. The 2021 models are all about elegance, with fabulous new wave-embossed dials and luxurious bezels. Perfect for women who like to be dazzled on the hour, every hour.

First created by OMEGA in 1957, the Seamaster 300 represents one of the most famous watches in underwater history. Admired by generations of divers, it has remained an iconic timepiece for more than 60 years. In 2021, the latest collection of models will arrive. Not only will they be thinner than previous versions thanks to the new sapphire glass, but they will include plenty of vintage tributes and a brand new Master Chronometer upgrade.

Overall Design

Overall Design

SEAMASTER AQUA TERRA

The new 34 mm models highlighted here, are in stainless steel and 18K Sedna gold and feature a symmetrical polished-brushed case body, a polished bezel set with diamonds, central hour/minute and seconds hands in diamond-polished 18K Sedna gold and a date window at 6H.

Luxurious Dials

With these exquisite watches, checking the time is a feast for the eyes. The latest models include beautiful waveembossed dials, which evoke the gentle rippling surface of the ocean. To add softness and warmth, each one is also offered in a unique new colour. This includes a nude dial encircled with 11 marquise-cut diamond hour markers, or a pale pink dial with 11 marquise-cut ruby hour-markers.

Shimmer or Shine

In addition to dials that dazzle, OMEGA is offering luxurious new ways for Aqua Terra fans to fix their watch to the wrist. There is an integrated bracelet in stainless steel and 18K Sedna gold, with polished central links, brushed external links and a butterfly clasp – or shimmering leather straps in red or nude.

The new collection follows the spirit of those original models. Each of the 41 mm timepieces will be delivered in classic stainless steel, with thinner bezels crafted from an oxalic, anodised-treated aluminium for increased hardness.

Strap & Bracelet

The bracelets are also in stainless steel and now come with an improved fit and finishing. Their shape has been ergonomically adjusted with streamlined fittings and a thinner, polished-brushed clasp. On the leather straps, a new buckle has also been included.

Sandwich Dial

Perhaps the most noticeable changes can be found on the new dials. For this, OMEGA has utilised a sandwich concept, including a base layer with Super-LumiNova and a second plate over the top with cuttings for the recessed hour markers and numerals. In a nod to history, these numerals are in the vintage Arabic open style, which appeared on early Seamaster 300 models in the 1960s.

Clean Dial & Lollipop Hand

OMEGA has also reintroduced the popular lollipop central seconds hand for the stainless steel models, with its tip now filled with Super-LumiNova. The hand works beautifully with the cleaner dial, which features only the OMEGA logo and Seamaster 300 name.

Slimmer Style

Those with a keen eye may also notice that the slim inner frame has given the dial a larger display, with an opening of 30.4 mm, as opposed to the previous 29.5 mm. Furthermore, OMEGA has achieved a slightly slimmer Seamaster 300 thanks to a new domed sapphire crystal on the face of the watch. This thinner look is enhanced by the addition of a new conical crown at the side of the case. www.davidmrobinson.co.uk 29

ICON Editions Mulberry launches 50th anniversary celebrations with their Icon Editions collection

M

ulberry celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and have announced their first in a series of Mulberry Editions drops: a hand-picked collection of Mulberry’s most era-defining silhouettes – perfectly recreated in collectable, miniature sizes. Mulberry began in 1971, founded by Roger Saul with his first collection of hand-crafted, timeless leather accessories. In the ensuing 50 years, successive creative directors have continued to champion British craft skills and a youthful, elegant aesthetic, while adding their own twist on Mulberry DNA. This collection pays tribute to the legacy of some of Mulberry’s most influential creative directors of the past two decades, from Nicholas Knightly and Emma Hill to Johnny Coca. The Iris, Amberley, Bayswater, Bayswater Tote and the newly relaunched Alexa all feature in miniature forms as part of the Icon Editions, alongside the Roxanne. Debuted in AW03, this luggage-inspired silhouette is making a long-awaited return, reintroducing its free-spirited stud and belt detailing to a new generation. The block-colour bags of the collection are crafted from Mulberry’s signature sustainable leather, a heavy grain style responsibly sourced from environmentally accredited tanneries with a Gold rating, available in Pale Slate, Chalk, Oak, Deep Amber, and Mulberry Green. Each silhouette is also offered in its own playful iteration of an archival check, electrified with the eye-catching Mulberry Pink shade that will appear across wider 2021 collections. This first Mulberry Editions collection marks the start of a series of limited-edition drops that will launch throughout 2021. Each one will celebrate an aspect of Mulberry’s heritage or introduce a collaborative partnership that chimes with the spirit of the brand. The collections will fondly pay homage as well as boldly breaking the rules to create something new that is beautiful, functional, and made to last.

Ask the EXPERT Amy Wright, Founder of Londe Botanics takes a look at how to conquer insomnia and get the best night's sleep

I

've been an insomniac for much of my life; struggling to fall asleep, waking in the early hours and then battling fatigue throughout the next day. It wasn't until I discovered self-care using aromatic botanical oils that I began to embrace evening relaxation routines. These gentle practices had such a powerful effect on my sleep and wellbeing that I became fascinated and decided to create my own. Using oil to anoint the skin is one of the oldest human rituals and is found in almost all cultures, from ancient Egypt to modern day royal coronations. Touch is powerfully soothing and massaging the skin can increase serotonin to help maintain the sleep cycle.

40

Natural aromatics are also excellent alternatives to promote the onset of sleep. Chamomile has long been known for its calming effects, rosemary is a mood enhancer and lavender is shown to lower cortisol levels and promote feelings of wellbeing. Our skincare and aromatherapy oils are blended from 100% UK grown botanicals to give a purely natural, locally-grown experience, but you can use other types of oil such as almond or softened coconut oil, scented with a couple of drops of essential oils. Some of my favourite bedtime rituals include: • A hot bath with a few drops of our lavender and rosemary Botanic Body Oil (add magnesium flakes to ease muscle tension)

• A gentle facial oil massage to finish an evening beauty routine. Our Botanic Evening Oil with starflower, chamomile and lavender is a divine way to help you drift to sleep and awaken with beautifully nourished skin. • A gentle foot or hand massage with a body oil, either from yourself or a partner, to stimulate acupressure points associated with sleep, including the outer wrist and just beneath the ball of the foot. • Finally, an aromatherapy pulse point oil such as our Stillness Oil kept on your bedside table can be used to enhance breathing exercises or pre-sleep meditation. I still have nights where I struggle to sleep but having these nurturing rituals to return to is a saviour, particularly during lockdown, and I love hearing that our oils have helped others. Wishing you sweet dreams and peaceful nights ahead. The Reme emed dy to D Diiet Woe oess Michael Gates trialled the new Remedy Kitchen Meal Prep Plan as part of his new diet regime

H

aving piled on a few too many pounds during lockdown and with summer fast approaching, it was time to take action. I have been enduring outdoor PT sessions throughout winter, but I really needed to get my diet back on track. With so many options for meal prep on the market, I was really excited to try The Remedy Kitchen. Already well established as a favourite Manchester healthy eating restaurant, they now offer luxury tailored Meal Prep Plans which are 100% gluten, dairy and refined sugar free. There are various plans to suit your lifestyle and dietary needs, I opted for a 3 day reset plan view to supercharging the body and mind. You can choose from plant-based, vegetarian, meat-based or pescatarian. Available for delivery or collection, I arranged a convenient drive-in lay-by collection which was seamless. I couldn’t wait to get home and review my personalised menu for the days ahead. I also added a smoothie bundle, with a different flavour for each day.

Monday

Lunch; Citrus avocado, Puy lentil and black grape salad with cucumber, radish, spinach and micro greens. Served with a lime, ginger and chilli dressing. Dinner; Chicken breast and Puy lentils in a creamy tarragon sauce served with brown and wild rice and topper with micro lemon. Smoothie; Green Miracle – Avocado apple, spinach and coconut milk.

Tuesday

Lunch; Puy lentil, ginger and chilli sweet potato with baby spinacy, courgette ribbons, pine nuts and paprike hummus. Dinner; Tomato, chicken and mixed bean chilli, brown and wild rice with omega seeds served with a lime a coriander yoghurt. dishes were flavoursome and just had the right level of spice. And finally, my favourite smoothie was the tropical glow. Think a colada cocktail but minus the alcohol and actually healthy for you! By day 4, I could definitely feel the benefits of the plan. Not only did I felt less bloated, I had lost 4 pounds in 3 days. And the best part of it was the food was delicious and I didn’t go hungry. So, if like me, you don’t have the time to meal prep every day and want freshly prepared dishes, brimming with vitamins, nutrients and 100% gluten, dairy and refined sugar free, give The Remedy Kitchen a try. Remedy Kitchen is open for meal prep clients and will reopen for sit-in dining on 17th May. For plans and prices, check out their website: www.theremedykitchen.co.uk

Lunch; Harvest salad - Roasted carrots parsnips, courgette and white onion with peppery rocket, tender stem and coriander leaf. Served with pomegranate seeds, micro greens and lemon and coriander hummus. Dinner; Spiced coconut and cardamom chicken curry and black rice topped with spring onion and chilli. Served with a cucumber raita. Smoothie; Tropical Glow – Mango, banana and coconut milk.

Favourite Dishes

My favourite lunch was the citrus avocado, lentil and black grape salad. It was so light, fresh and tasty and the lime, ginger and chilli dressing had a real zing. For dinner it would have be the chicken and mixed bean chilli closely followed by the coconut and cardamom curry. Both

This month I shine a light on a British Institution - The Kennel Club What could be more quintessentially British than The Kennel Club and the

Two hundred and twenty-two breeds of dog, seven dog groups, tens of thousands of competitors, hundreds of thousands of visitors, a global television audience and one Best in Show! Dogs were originally bred for practical functions such as hunting, guarding and herding, but during the Victorian era in the middle of the 19th century they became a status symbol and dog breeding became a serious hobby. This is where most modern breeds originated, pure bred dogs were bred from a narrow set of ancestors and the function of the dog then came secondary to its appearance. In 1873 a British politician, Sewallis Shirley, became frustrated trying to

New data from The Kennel Club shows native breeds making a comeback, half of the top ten fastest breeds gaining popularity are native British breeds such as the Jack Russell Terrier and the Corgi. The Labrador reclaims the top spot after a short reign by the French Bulldog. Some of the top breeds going down are the Chihuahua and the Siberian Husky. Old English sheep dogs are sadly now at risk, and Irish Red and White Setters are the most vulnerable of all native breeds.

Terms and Conditions apply (over 18 only) Protecting your Spirits Collection Beautiful bottles like the unique porcelain used by The Forest Distillery may form part of your collection. Building any collection is an investment, so as well as making sure it’s covered under your home insurance policy, it’s important to consider these storage tips to preserve it for future years:

54

#1 - Store upright – whiskey bottles must be stored upright, since the cork doesn’t close as tightly as a wine cork. Whiskey corks are designed for multiple uses, whereas wine corks are disposable. #2 - Reduce evaporation – since tiny amounts of liquid evaporate through the cork, the filling level will decrease over time. An additional cap on top of the cork can also help, but take care that the cap doesn’t soil or damage the original sleeve. Bottles with screw-tops must be retightened by hand regularly, since they always loosen on their own, which leads to increased evaporation. #3 - Protect from humidity – in a damp basement the label starts to mould easily. A thin plastic bag is ideal to pack the whiskey airtight. But take care - the plastic bag mustn’t contain any plasticisers or other chemicals. They could bleach out the label and affect the bottle contents through the cork. aving been lucky enough to indulge in a gastronomic pilgrimage to Northcote a few years back, as well as visit Ribble Valley Inns under Nigel’s vision, I was excited to hear news of the chef’s latest chapter – providing some semblance of normal dining out in your own home. Each gourmet food box uses the finest, ethically produced ingredients, packaged and delivered nationwide for you to finish and plate at home, whilst remaining true to his Lancashire roots and 20 years of holding a Michelin Star. No pressure then. The Gourmet Boxes change each week, making the most of the freshest, local ingredients available and delivered to your door in a temperature-controlled box. There are easy-to-follow instructions, a running order, and tubs and packages for each course individually and clearly labelled. First up, the bread. Pop it in the oven, and plate with the indulgent butter and super-smooth hummus. Next, the salmon parcel, which was easy to cook and a little more involved in the plating. If I were to score myself, it would be a ‘could do better’. Although a good size, the parcel wasn’t heavy going, the delicately pickled cucumber adding a hint of freshness and the caviar cream the ultimate indulgence.

On to the chicken, the main event, with the most instruction and elements. I don’t know it was the pressure of not doing the food a disservice or trying to make the evening perfect, but I was a little apprehensive on this one. I needn’t have been. It was a bit more involved, so it meant transporting the glass of wine and conversation from the dining room table to the breakfast bar but all completely do-able and ready in approximately half an hour. Again, the plating needed work but the meat was super-succulent and the rest an amazingly good earthy quality about them, brought together by the tastebud tantalising mushroom puree. After a good discussion about the advantages of good, local food and visions of growing our own (which will never actually happen), it was onto dessert. This plating I could do, although I did have to fight our two-and-a-half-year-old over the left-over chocolate mousse and white chocolate snow. Light, fresh, zingy and sweet, it was the perfect end to the meal. Not to mention the artisan chocolates that we treated ourselves to with a coffee after the washing up.

This is a gourmet box for avid foodies, prepared by a Michelin-starred chef, using the best of local produce. What more could you want? Haworth at Home Gourmet Boxes, £110 for two people, www.nigel-hawroth.co.uk

Life on a

Plate

Podca st The second episode of the Waitrose ‘Life on a Plate’ podcast features award-winning comedian Sarah Millican who talks about her passion for baking, what she eats on tour and how she and her family show their love through food Sarah’s Childhood Memories of Food ‘My mam was never really good at cooking but she could do a good dinner. She could never do a souffle or a flan, that’s not the kind of house we grew up in. I’m similar now - I don’t stretch myself. I remember I would get in from school and I would make dinner for the four of us, but it would be ‘out of the freezer into the oven.’ So, fish and chips. It was more warming through… not what I call ‘proper cooking’ which always starts with an onion, doesn’t it? Everything starts with an onion! ‘ Sarah on Cooking ‘The first time I experimented a little bit [with cooking] was when I was first married and I would have people over. I would do a chicken pasta thing - I never did recipes then. I must have been quite

an entertaining host because they always came back, and I think the food was very bland!’ Sarah on Food on Tour ‘Part of my lifestyle is eating out a lot because whenever you’re on the road, you don’t have a kitchen. So I tend to cook things you can’t find in restaurants - like beans on toast. When I’m on tour the nicest thing somebody can do for me is cook me a meal and invite me to their house, because it’s so rare. [On tour] you eat either in restaurants or cafes, or you get takeaways backstage - it gets boring. Every time I’m in Newcastle my sister will invite me round and she’ll cook a roast and it feels like such a treat when all your other home comforts are gone. That’s what restaurants are missing - living rooms - for the unbuttoning of jeans, and a small nap afterwards. There’s definitely a gap in the market for that!’ Sarah on Baking ‘I’m more of a baker than a cook. I don’t trust anybody who doesn’t like cake. I’m a massive workaholic and a few years ago when we moved to the countryside and it wasn’t quite so manic all of the time, I started to bake. A friend of mine gave me

a massive list of things I should have in my kitchen - ingredients and equipment and utensils. But every now and then I’ll find an 8-year-old jar of nutmeg and think ‘she was wrong - nutmeg’s never come up!’ Sarah on The Great British Bake Off ‘Whenever Bake Off is on, I like to bake along. I do a cake or biscuits every week and my favourite is a chocolate and banana cake. I don’t do fancy icing, I don’t always do fillings. This cake needs neither. It’s not pretty but it’s delicious. I can’t not eat something sweet when Bake Off is on. I also enjoy the variety of responses I get [on Twitter] when I ask what people are eating [during the show]- sometimes it’s a Twirl and other people have got a croquembouche!’ The Life on a Plate podcast is available from all platforms, with a new episode every Thursday. 57

CALM, ECLECTIC

LIVING

Known for her calm, elegant schemes accented with antiques, textures and artwork Clive Christian recently partnered with UK interior designer Louise Bradley. Whilst working on a styling project for their Weybridge showroom, Louise shares her inspirations and thoughts on the latest interior trends

YOU & YOU R HOM E What was your journey to become a designer? I started my career in fashion but found it very transient. This led me back to my passion for interiors, with the opening of my showroom on Walton Street, it was shortly after this that my first client asked that I design their home and from there the business has grown to where it is today.

60

How would you describe your signature aesthetic and has this changed over time? I have been designing the classic contemporary aesthetic and neutral colour palette as the heart and soul of the design style, since starting the practice. This aesthetic provides a timeless solution for interiors, unfettered by passing trends.

Homes and Interiors

If you had to save one item within your home what would it be? It wouldn’t be an item but my beloved miniature dachshund Ellie.

For every client the balance between the classic and contemporary elements of the design is different and it might mean working with original features of the property, introducing antiques found in our favourite Parisian markets, or contemporising the space with interesting textures and surface finishes. I choose a neutral colour palette for our clients’ homes to create elegant and calm homes. I’m very particular with the paint shade and fabric hues we choose for our palettes although they are neutral, they are vibrant with various textures and tones, often taking inspiration from nature.

What is your personal style signifier? My go to outfit is normally leather trousers and a neutral-coloured cashmere jumper. I need always be comfortable as so often you will be on site! What’s your most recent “find” and where do you source your feature design pieces? When it comes to our feature design pieces, we design these in-house bespoke for our clients. Some of the pieces are then introduced to our collections, launched annually and available from our Knightsbridge Showroom. For accessories though, nothing beats Parisian antiques markets for unique pieces and object d’art.

Which room do you love the most in your home and why? It has to be the open space on the basement level of my house. Whilst the property had an existing basement kitchen and dining space, I increased the footprint of both spaces and achieved higher ceilings by digging down and back. The resulting open plan kitchen/dining area/snug became the core of my home, perfect for both relaxing and entertaining.

T R E N D S & S PAC E S What is one interior design trend you’re really enjoying at the moment? Together with the design team, we don’t follow fleeting trends. What I’m enjoying at the moment, is noticing how more and more new designers focus on a more eclectic look and understand the mastery of putting together a neutral and timeless interior scheme. It takes practice and dedication, to carefully layer interiors, with art and accessories to give a calm and relaxed space. When embarking on a project, such as your own recent home project, where do you start when it comes to space planning? We start each of our projects with getting to know our clients, their lifestyles and how they will use their homes every day

62

– from morning family breakfasts to the evening entertaining. The same rules followed designing my own home – I have quickly become my own toughest client. When it comes to the context, we considered the location of the home and its natural surroundings. Thanks to this, we can create beautiful indoor-outdoor spaces, which aid wellbeing and a sense of calm when at home. What do you consider to be the added touch of luxury in a kitchen? There are so many ways in which you can add luxury to a kitchen – from state-of-the-art technology, through carefully sourced natural surfaces, to bespoke cabinetry, creating a space for everything. Do you see any particular trends emerging in the way we live and use the spaces in our homes? I feel like this year we all got to know our homes intimately and the way we use spaces has changed

Homes and Interiors

dramatically. This will develop further as we negotiate new work-life habits and we spend time with family and friends differently too. I’m excited for everybody to use their spaces in line with their lifestyles, understanding how we spend our days, do we have our own spaces in which we can recharge, do we have quiet work environments and do the common spaces work for our socialising needs. What does a beautifully thought out kitchen mean to you? A beautifully thought out kitchen can quickly become the heart of the home, especially when it’s effortless to use, thanks to clever spatial planning and aesthetically pleasing design solutions, it should always be a pleasure to spend time in. I love kitchen designs which are directly connected to the entertaining spaces, making for a fantastic evening with friends and family. www.clivechristianfurniture.com; www.louisebradley.co.uk

Q&A

with

CHARLOTTE COCHRANE, FOUNDER OF MADE BELOW How would you describe yourself ? I’m a crafter, mender, and mess-maker. I’ve had a life-long interest in everything arty and have tried my hand at many crafts, eventually settling on upholstery and generally ogling beautiful furniture. Tell us a bit more about you… After having a number of varied jobs and careers, I’ve settled in Manchester where my most meaningful career change has happened. What started as an appreciation of furniture, turned into something special when my husband bought me a course to learn upholstery. I was hooked and this lead me to where I am right now with Made Below. Who are your greatest influences? Tricky question. Obvious influences are my family, but that’s a whole other interview! In terms of creativity, I admire the work and ideology of the Arts and Crafts Movement. I also adore Ray and Charles Eames and lots of others such as Iris Apfel and Maggi Hambling, who channel their creative urges in their own unique way. What have been some of your best jobs/experiences at work and why? As an upholsterer I get to work on people’s treasured heirlooms and give them a new lease of life, ready for the next generation. Some of these items are so special that customers have actually cried and hugged me when they’ve seen the transformed piece.

Traditional vs contemporary style? I like an eclectic mix! Traditional, older furniture is definitely better made than today’s ‘high street’ furniture. The manufacture of traditional furniture oozes attention to detail and quality, something I aim to achieve in my furniture. Contemporary styles are hard to keep up with, which is why I treasure my unfashionable mixture of a mid-century Womb Chair, antique wooden furniture and modern hand-crafted items. What would you consider your greatest achievement? Becoming self employed. It’s given me a lot of creative and personal pleasure as well as a sense of achievement. It also suits my personality to work (largely) alone. What would your superpower be? Teleporting. www.twistedloom.co.uk

P.S. Last book you read? Lanark by Scottish writer Alasdair Gray, which is a slightly bonkers novel about the two sides of a living hell! I discovered the author whilst staying in an Air BNB in Scotland and randomly picking his book off their shelf. Dream buy? I’d really like an amazing 1920s cocktail cabinet (full of ingredients!)

Working life in the Isle of Man is collaborative, innovative and world leading. Home to a wide range of sectors including e-business and e-gaming, fintech and emerging technologies, biomed and manufacturing, you can fulfil your career aspirations here, but also find the right work/life balance. There is a saying in the island, Traa-dy-Liooar, which means ‘Time enough’. Let go of stress, take a bit of extra time and embrace life. One of the many benefits to living in a stunning Island location is that there are minimal commute times to allow more time to enjoy what makes you happy, and there is plenty to do with your spare time in the evenings and weekends. There are 24 beautiful beaches on the Island all boasting a wide variety of habitats and geography, from long sandy beaches that wrap around the coastline with dunes and lighthouses dotting the shore, to sheltered bays and rocky cliffs. The size of the island also means you are never further than 20 minutes’ drive away from a beach paradise – a luxury and sanctuary during the recent period of isolation and restriction. You can also choose from a wide variety of beautiful eateries across the island.

For those wanting to feel the salt on their skin, there are opportunities to go out sailing in the Manx waters, while those who prefer to watch from dry land can enjoy events such as the Round the Island Race which happen every year. With kayakers and paddleboarders aplenty, spending evenings and weekends at sea is the norm. The Isle of Man also has acres and acres of green lanes and open spaces that are perfect for horse riding, and there are plenty of private stables for horse owners with many competitions and shows throughout the year. Whether riders choose the scenic countryside or the beautiful beaches, there’s ideal terrain to be enjoyed on horseback, with breath-taking views guaranteed. The Triskelion Polo Club caters for those with more of a competitive spirit. E AT I N G OUT Across the entire island, award winning food and drink producers always keep things local by using the island’s bountiful supply of ingredients in their recipes. Living in the Isle of Man offers a paradise of long sandy beaches, and this leisurely lifestyle does not stop when it comes to food. A new generation of artisan producers is leading the way in progressive thinking, building on the island’s strong agricultural heritage, creating a vibrant food scene centred in cooperation and sustainability, and winning an increasing number of Great Taste Awards.

The Boatyard, Peel Situated on the west coast in Peel’s historic quayside overlooking the bustling marina and ancient castle, the Boatyard is a family-run restaurant that serves some of the best local seafood. Husband and wife Joan and Graham Mowat, who previously owned and ran restaurants and a hotel in the UK, visited the Isle of Man in 2006 and fell in love with the Island immediately. The Boatyard prides itself in using fresh seafood straight off the boat – including local lobsters, whole fish and the famous Manx queenies (queen scallops) – and as much locally sourced produce as possible to bring diners a true taste of the Island and its surrounding seas, as well as offering freshly baked breads, homemade puddings and ice creams, and Isle of Man beers.

Versa restaurant, Port Erin Sustainable eating advocate and campaigner Pippa Lovell has taken her passion for sustainable living, and her gift as a chef, to open Forbes European 30 under 30 winning restaurant Versa. She was inspired by the

foraging methods she learned at the Noma Group’s 108 in Copenhagen. All food served at Versa is found within 25 miles of the restaurant, a buzzing place serving Michelin-quality food with an ever-changing menu. An incomer to the island, Miss Lovell says she’s constantly inspired by the quality of the meat and fish from her local suppliers, together with the many wild herbs she literally stumbles upon.

Cycle 360, Douglas Inspired by the cycling scene in London, Austin, Minneapolis and Brooklyn, Cycle 360 is the brainchild of husband and wife Mark and Sacha Horsthuis. Both were born on the Island, but spent time living and working in the UK, before moving ‘home’ to begin their business venture. Originally a ‘pop-up’ shop out of a storage unit in the heart of the island’s capital, Douglas, the couple launched Cycle 360 as a quirky bike shop selling coffees, and quickly made a name for themselves. In 2018 they expanded to open a fitness club on the site offering gym facilities, a range of classes in their studio, and a post-workout refuel bar. Now the Cycle 360 brand is recognised by locals and tourists, and attracts reputable and successful bike and fitness-related brands from all over the world, eager to get involved with the unique and exciting Cycle 360 concept.

GEMMA WASLEY AND ZOE GUILFORD

OWNER-DIRECTORS OF REHAB SQUARED How long have you lived in the Isle of Man and what made you move here? I was born here, as was my wife and business partner, Zoe, but we both moved away for University then stayed away for 15 years. Completely coincidentally, we ended up moving back to the island in 2010 for family reasons. So, we’ve been home for a decade now. How would you describe it to someone who has never been? Our perception of the island hasn’t really changed since we were younger: we’d still describe it as a green, hilly, peaceful little enclave in the middle of the Irish Sea. However, it has a lot to offer besides. Collectively and independently we’ve always been fiercely proud of the island and its heritage, but even more so since returning as we truly appreciate what being home means to us now. I think this feeling has crystallised during 2020 and into this year, given the global pandemic. Tell us about your business – When was it founded and what makes it different? I set up an ‘upcycling’ business in the Isle of Man upon my return from Sydney, because coming home allowed me to take a conscious break from the corporate world and make a fresh start in an industry I’d always been passionate about. I was able to find a gap in the market on the island at that time. As Interior Rehab, I created pieces of custom-made furniture and provided design services to both residential and commercial clients. Five years ago, when I moved the operation from a unit on an industrial estate to the high street, the business became Rehab² and Zoe joined to

78

assist me as the business grew and evolved. Initially we designed and offered solely furniture and over time this led to sourcing handpicked antiques and design-led gifts and accessories, in order to stay relevant and accessible on the high street. At that point, I stopped residential projects to concentrate on commercial interior design. Tell us about your plans for the future When we returned to the island ten years ago, we believed that the Isle of Man would be a place we would have as a base and where our family was safe, but that we would spend most of our time away because there wouldn’t be enough to sustain us and our preferred lifestyle. We feel very differently today; we’ve committed whole-heartedly to living here so are in the process of building a home (a Californian inspired passive Huf Haus by the sea, the first of its kind on the Isle of Man) and we are expecting our first child in the Summer. Work wise, we are continuing to grow and diversify Rehab Squared, developing the interior design side of the business. We’re keen on the idea of working from home so have incorporated a home-office/studio into the design of our new home. There will be a workshop on site where we plan to focus on developing the custom-made Manx product range to sell on our website. We are also about to launch our first accommodation project called Loft 11, which is a high-end, NYC-loftstyle apartment for business and tourist travellers, an exciting new proposition for the island, located in the heart of Douglas. The concept is “invisible service” which now makes more sense than ever in the age of Covid. There is a plethora of seaside, cottage, more traditional places to stay on the island, but a real lack of design-led unique accommodation options. We hope to

Homes and Interiors

bridge that gap with Loft 11. We are also excited to be involved in an upcoming hospitality business so watch this space! Rather than hold tight and stay quiet this year, we’ve ramped things up and continued to invest more in the island. This year, the Isle of Man has managed to stay open for business far longer than any other neighbouring country, and we’re among the members of the community who have been lucky enough to take advantage of that opportunity. What difference has living in the Isle of Man made to your work-life balance? How do you spend your free time? Not having to live with a twice-daily commute is a dream that we both still value, given our former lives in Sydney and London – today we live within walking distance of both our workplace and our current development project, so we really appreciate the joy of being able to savour the extra time that allows us. What’s the best-kept secret in the Isle of Man? It would be difficult to name just one as the Isle of Man has hidden its light under a bushel for far too long. The island has something unique to offer - we have an incredible local food offering (great producers and restaurants), brilliant music and dramatic arts (the live scene and theatre community here is truly alive), and breath-taking natural landscapes. On a beautiful day there’s seriously nowhere more stunning and it’s not widely known that the island has biosphere status. What opportunities has living in the Isle of Man given you and your family? We see the Isle of Man as a microcosm of the rest of the world, so it’s a great place to try out new ideas. You can reach the community directly, the school and health systems are excellent, and you’re not just another number. You can be somebody and make a difference,

while still being able to travel to Manchester in 25 minutes to enjoy city life or to fly abroad easily. What opportunities do you see for others who are considering relocation? We both worked in different countries during our early careers, Since returning to the Isle of Man, we feel so lucky to have the opportunity to make the same money and live the same lifestyle but feel freer and less stressed. Zoe set up and ran the Isle of Man Film Festival for a few years and said that the opportunities that this community – and especially people interested in the creative industries - received on the island were far and away greater than those provided in the UK when she’d worked on similar art and film ventures. There’s more help and fewer people, meaning that if you’re driven, you can follow your passion and create a true niche for yourself. Why would you recommend the Isle of Man to others looking to relocate and what would be your top tips? We have many good friends in London who are currently re-evaluating their positions due to the ongoing pandemic, so are starting to come around to the idea of moving out of the city in order to be able to live their lives. We believe the Isle of Man has something to offer everyone. Though my family is Manx through generations, Zoe’s is English, and they came over the year she was born, so we have asked them why they moved and why they’ve stayed. They truly feel their lives are better living on the island and have never looked back. Both my own and Zoe’s parents and grandparents set up businesses on the island which demonstrates the historic opportunity for innovation here. Now that we’ve moved back to stay, we’re very happy with our decision and look forward to the island being our base for life.

IAN WARBORN-JONES

DISTILLER/CO-FOUNDER OF OUTLIER DISTILLING COMPANY How long have you lived in the Isle of Man and what made you move here? My wife and our (then only) child moved over in April 2017. We moved for a number of reasons, not least of which being a job I had been offered, but ultimately it was for a change of lifestyle. We were living in Kew in SW London, which is a fantastic place, but your priorities change when you have kids, and suddenly those incredible restaurants become theoretical. My family are spread all over the world, whereas my wife’s parents live in Bride in the North of the Isle of Man How would you describe it to someone who has never been? The Isle of Man is a fascinating place, with the landscape changing with each mile. The scenery is incredible, and the ever-present sea provides a constantly changing backdrop. The people are friendly, very approachable and down to earth. The sense of community is the best I have ever experienced. There’s a great mix of those that are ‘Manx as the hills’ and international ex-pat ‘come overs’ so there’s a far wider spread of people and backgrounds than you’d expect from a population of 83,000. The quality of the produce is world-class, and there are some superb restaurants that use this to the fullest. There is a vibrant music scene throughout the pubs and bars, and the level of the local musical talent is much higher than I had anticipated. The schools are good, and generally small and community focused. focused. Obviously, the TT is amazing, with the island transforming for those two weeks in the summer, and the smells and sounds of the bikes are a welcome touch of madness to what is generally a calm and beautiful place to live.

80

Tell us about your business – When was it founded and what makes it different My business partner Rick and I set up Outlier, a small craft distillery in November 2019, but then swiftly found ourselves in lockdown and put things on hold for a few months. We’ve set up on Ballakelly Farm in Andreas. Our 180l still equipment was built in 1994 and runs on wood. We burn off-cuts sourced from the sawmill in St Johns, so we garner all of our operational heat from waste. It’s about as good for the environment as one could hope. It’s important to us that we use as much as we can from the Island. We’ve commissioned a local craftsman to build us a 6000l Manx elm fermentation vessel, which again will be heated by wood, via a friend’s old hot-tub boiler! At Outlier, we’re not rejecting modernity to be obtuse, we just like doing things differently, it’s also more fun this way! It’s still early days, operationally speaking, but we’ve released two small-batch spirits so far. The first was a locally foraged 45% wild-berry schnapps called Hedge Fund. Rick and I press-ganged a few friends and went out picking blackberries and elderberries which we then fermented and distilled. Came out great, so we’re definitely doing it again. That’s really our ethos. Try it. If it works - cool - we’ll do it again. If it doesn’t, so what? We tried! Tell us about your plans for the future Well, obviously world domination. Aside from that, we’d like to be in a position to have our products sold across the UK and Ireland within the next three years and hopefully further afield after that. In terms of business growth, we’d like to expand to a bigger still in the next few years, and eventually on to whisky. For the time being, consolidating, making unusual booze and hosting some fun and interesting events is the plan!

Homes and Interiors

What difference has living in the Isle of Man made to your work-life balance? How do you spend your free time? It’s made an absolutely huge difference, there’s no two ways about it. When I first started working in London, I used to commute 2.5 hours either side from Lewes into Holborn. When we were in Kew it was still 40 minutes into town on a rush-hour tube. Now it’s 15 minutes including dropping my son en route to school. I see my kids an awful lot more than had we still been in the south east, and the quality of the time spent together is much higher. We walk a lot. Beaches, mountains, glens, and Ramsey town centre are all within a stone’s throw of where we live in Andreas. We have a beagle called Claret, who (like all beagles) needs a lot of space to run about. The Ayres nature reserve, or Ramsey beach at low tide are excellent places to let her off for a sprint. What’s the best-kept secret in the Isle of Man? This is a tough one. I think there are a lot of really cool things happening now, particularly in terms of food and drink. Of those that are still getting established, I’d say that Pippa Lovell’s restaurant Versa is one that stands out, for sure. She’s focused on using as much native, local and foraged ingredients as possible, and the result is a truly incredible menu. Likewise, the Odin brewery in Glen Mona is making some really cool beer in some interesting styles. The history is always close on the island, and the ruins and ancient graves are really interesting to explore. A hoard of Viking treasure was recently unearthed by a detectorist. If I had to pick one element which I love the most it would be the beaches. I swim a lot, and the water is cold and clean. The beaches are huge and usually empty, making it amazingly peaceful and invigorating. What opportunities has living in the Isle of Man given you and your family? The opportunities here are manifold. Starting a business is encouraged, with easy access to government

and the associated support. You’re not punted around multiple call centres – you get to speak to helpful and enthusiastic teams. The population is not large, so it’s likely you’ll bump into your MHK at the supermarket or in the pub. Everything’s much easier to do here than the UK, and the bureaucracy isn’t onerous. As far as family, my little boy Leif is 4 years old and has just started at Andreas school. The school is lovely, the class sizes are small, and it’s really engaged with the parents. My little girl will start there too in a couple of years, and I’m looking forward to that already. We spend a lot more time outside than we used to, weekend walks along the Thames have been replaced with hikes up mountains, beach exploration and enjoying the plantations and nature reserves which are all over the island. I’m happy my kids will get to spend their childhood free-range and breathing fresh air. What opportunities do you see for others who are considering relocation? I think the opportunity to have a healthier, more family focused life. No traffic, less stress, shorter commutes, and a more relaxed life in general. You’ll get to know people quickly, and it’s easy to fall in love with the place. Why would you recommend the Isle of Man to others looking to relocate and what would be your top tips? The island is a great place to live, there’s good food, great pubs, friendly people, good schools, less traffic and pollution, clean air, breath-taking countryside, and (in normal years) you can be in Liverpool within 25 minutes and London City within an hour. As far as tips go: Have an open mind. Things are very similar to the UK here, but not all of them. The pace is slower here, and that (as a southerner) took a bit of getting used to. I love it now, and it’s made me a much happier person on the whole. Get a good jacket and a comfortable pair of wellies! The weather is sometimes challenging, but often that’s when the island is at its most beautiful. As Billy Connelly said, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.”

KEVIN AMPHLETT ENTREPRENEUR

How long have you lived in the Isle of Man and what made you move here? I moved with my family to the Isle of Man from the Ribble Valley in Lancashire in 1998, and we have 5 children, two of which were born in the Island. Over the years I had visited on business and had always being attracted by its unspoiled scenery, quaint villages and rolling hills - in some respects very similar to the Ribble Valley. This incredible scenery brings a real feeling of space and freedom and of course we’re always near the sea; we enjoy the stunning coastal walks. I can’t deny the tax regime was a draw. With zero percent corporation tax and no capital gains tax it is an ideal place to base myself while planning, growing and exiting businesses. The low crime rate and safety was another important factor when we decided to relocate as a family. How would you describe it to someone who had never been? Don’t expect San Tropez but when the sun shines on the Isle of Man there is no place in the world like it. You have the freedom to roam, and it may be an island but there is so much space that you don’t feel restricted. I’m passionate about my cars and on the Isle of Man I have the potential to use them all, and I get to drive safely through

incredible scenery on unrestricted roads and drive my car in town knowing I won’t be in a traffic jam. The infrastructure has grown tremendously over my time here with great restaurants, caterers, bars and shops. We have two fabulous theatres with big names as well as local artists keeping us entertained. Tell us a little about your business interests? I started out in insurance and founded specialist Healthcare brokerage, Chase Templeton Limited in 2002. We successfully sold the business in 2017. Since then I have invested in and have various business interests, one of the most exciting is AMACOR Capital, a consolidator in the growing convenience retail sector in the North West of England. Running your business from here works incredibly well, and island life is not restricting. I have direct travel links and benefit from great communication systems, with good internet speeds and fibreoptic cable. The island gives me a great base from which to travel the world with direct links into the major UK airports and ferry to Heysham and Liverpool when I want to take my cars away. I also make regular use of helicopters from home and private jets out of the Private Jet terminal based at the airport in Ronaldsway. It really does cater for all my needs. What are your plans for the future? More of the same! Building new businesses and enjoying life, especially as we have made the Isle of Man our permanent home now.

What difference has living in the Isle of Man made to your work-life balance? How do you spend your free time? Work-life balance is very important. We have such a great group of friends and a huge social scene, and when the pandemic allows, we often travel on holiday together. We host loads of social events and enjoy meals in and meals out. We are involved in several charities too which keep us very busy. My main lifestyle passions are golf, keeping fit and my cars. There’s lots of opportunities to play golf with nine golf courses on the island - Castletown Golf Course is one of the top 100 courses in the UK. The Isle of man offers an incredible array of sport - football rugby, cycling, fishing, diving, motorsport, and yachting - it’s hard to think of a recreational activity that’s not represented. We built our house in 2013 and I am fortunate to have a gym and pool at home to help me keep in shape in an attempt to balance out the socialising. What’s the best kept secret in the Isle of Man The Isle of Man itself is THE best kept secret, there is such potential here. The island is about real people and real families, and it’s about speaking to people in the street and making new friends at any opportunity. The winds might blow occasionally but there’s a warmth here that’s hard to find.

the team at Locate Isle of Man, who can support with any aspect of relocating. The Government is open to opportunities for establishing businesses and there are business grants available for anyone building businesses here. My family have benefited from a great education system, and we live in a safe and supportive community. This is your opportunity to have a great work life balance; enjoy sports and leisure facilities, explore hills, coastlines and glens, have a fantastic social life and still travel globally (when the world allows). What would be your top tip? Buy a raincoat!! (The weather is very similar to the north of England) Be outgoing and open to making new connections and new friends. There’s a lovely group of high net worth individuals living here on the island who collaborate and support each other. I’d be more than happy to speak to anybody who is considering relocating – and when the borders open, I’d urge people to come see the Isle of Man for themselves.

What opportunities do you see for others who are considering relocating? The island has a warm and friendly attitude to newcomers. It’s supportive on all levels from tax to infrastructure and community. I’d encourage anyone to have a conversation with

The iconic Royal Crescent and Royal Victoria Park, which also feature in the series, are just a short stroll away for the perfect wedding pictures. The Assembly Rooms, one of Bath’s finest Georgian buildings, was purpose built in 1771 for a particular 18th century form of entertainment: the assembly; ‘a stated and general meeting of the polite persons of both sexes for the sake of conversation, gallantry, news and play’. These are the activities that the beloved Bridgerton characters were involved in during the series and it’s wonderful that this venue can still be used today for what it was originally designed for. www.bathvenues.co.uk

DOWNTON ABBEY It’s been six whole years since millions watched Downton Abbey’s final television episode aired on ITV. The series was a huge hit, especially overseas and was set at Highclere Castle in Hampshire. The Earl and Countess of Carnarvon were delighted to welcome back old friends Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter and Phyllis Logan to tread the Castle boards once more to create Downton Abbey: The Movie. You can now visit Highclere Castle and relive every scene: glide down the grand oak staircase like Lady Mary did on her wedding day, sit at Jackdaws Castle where Lady Edith so often found herself and take in the state dining room where many of the Dowager Countess’ wonderfully acerbic lines were delivered by Dame Maggie Smith. www.highclerecastle.co.uk

GAME OF THRONES Go behind the scenes of HBO’s Game of Thrones with a stay at The Potter’s Cottage, a cosy property that sits on the historic farmyard of Castle Ward, the location of Winterfell, the backdrop for the series pilot and much of season one. It’s also where you will find the Whispering Wood and key scenes including Robb Stark’s Camp, the Baelor battle and when Brienne confronts the Stark men. Game of Thrones spent eight weeks at Castle Ward building the set of Winterfell ahead of the pilot episode and hundreds of actors and crew worked on the filming there. The staff were a little star-struck when the team of producers and executives flew in from LA to check out the site, and it was agreed that the area was simply perfect to provide the setting of the home of the Stark family. The farmyard was transformed into Winterfell with a large set, helped by a large amount of CGI in post-production. Although the set no longer remains, it’s easy to see how the Tower House became the imposing entrance to Winterfell. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/castle-ward 94

Sail Away to

Luxury Kevin Evans set sail on a tropical Caribbean cruise on the MS Nieuw Statendam – taking in Turks And Caicos, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas for a picture-perfect, white sand escape

Departure Day My colleague and I have travelled many places around the world, however as first time cruisers we were both excited and apprehensive about our trip. As we had never cruised before we had preconceived ideas of what was instore. Our journey began in Manchester via Philadelphia to Miami, which was seamless and was prior to the pandemic last year which seems a lifetime ago! We had an overnight stay at the Marriot Harbour Beach Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, where our transfer was picking us up to start our Holland America experience.

96

Background

Day 1

Holland America Line was founded in Holland in 1873. It provided service from its European base to the Americas and the company’s first ship was the original Rotterdam, which sailed its 15-day maiden voyage from the Netherlands to New York City on October 15, 1872. During the first 25 years, the company carried 400,000 people from Europe to the Americas. Other North American ports were added during the early 20th century. It now is a thriving cruising business servicing the world.

En route to the ship we were taken aback by the sheer size of the ships at the port, as we approached the Niew Statendam, our ship really stood out as it was only a year old. On arrival at check in we were ushered through quickly and efficiently- within 15 minutes. As we walked on-board it felt like we had walked into a boutique hotel rather than a cruise ship- it had a very modern feel to it with artwork adorning all the main corridors. The Niew Statendam is only one of 3 ships in the pinnacle class within the Holland America fleet. Pinnacle class is the premium tier within Holland America and as you can imagine it didn’t disappoint. We arrived at our stateroom on the 5th deck and dropped our bags. We then went onto the balcony to take in the amazing view. Our stateroom was well designed and equipped with plush beds and luxury fixtures and fittings with all the amenities you would expect in a boutique hotel room. We celebrated with

a pre-arranged bottle of Champagne, which was perfectly chilled awaiting our arrival. We quickly read our information packs and went to explore the ship. The Niew Statendam is 975 foot in length and is 115 foot wide and can accommodate over 2666 guests at any one time. There are a multitude of entertainment and innovative dining options and we couldn’t wait to try them all. After exploring the ship, we took a few hours to refresh and then got ready for our evening ahead. For our first dinner we headed to Club Orange - the new on-board programme that gives an added level of luxury with priority access, exclusive amenities and special events for an additional cost. Club Orange has a Grill like menu – with specially sourced ingredients with provenance that deliver on quality. We ate Florida Stone Crab Claws and had an amazing steak with a side of Beechers Mac N Cheese which should not be missed. All washed down with perfectly paired wine from the sommelier.

Day 2 Following a night at sea we arrived at the first port of call, Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas. We took in the breath taking sights from our balcony as the ship came into port. It tends to get busy when everyone tries to disembark the ship at the same time, so we soon realised it was best to stay back an hour when it was much breezier. We used this time wisely and had premium in-room dining breakfast, which was a perfect start to the day. We then headed out to stunning beach on the small private island and hired a cabana overlooking the crystal clear waters. Whilst I chilled and took in the Caribbean sunshine, my colleague went on a horseback riding by land and

sea excursion. Setting out on a ride along winding trails up to the highest point on the island, for a panoramic view of Half Moon Cay and the surrounding islands. We continued along the bay, back to the corral which was an incredible experience. For lunch we headed to Lobster Shack on the beach, where we sample lobster with Caribbean rice and lobster rolls. We then spent the afternoon lazing on the beach and headed back to the ship for some downtime. That evening we headed to the award-winning Rudi sel de mer Brasserie, which offered a modern twist on classic French dishes and seafood. If you are a seafood lover this is a must! For appetisers we had Classic Baked Escargot and Calamari followed by the Sharing Platter of Fruits de mer which was phenomenal. We also managed to sneak in some marinated lobster – simply divine. The highlight for the mains was the Salt Crusted Baked Seabass.

Day 3 This was a day at sea on our journey towards Grand Turk and Cacaos. We took advantage of this to explore the ship in more detail and check out the facilities. For most of the day we spent relaxing at the lido deck by the pool sampling the gourmet burgers and hot dogs from the Dive in casual poolside grill – these were sampled everyday by us as they were delicious. In the afternoon we checked out The Greenhouse spa by Elemis which we amazed at the size and facilities available. This heavenly retreat nurtures every aspect of your well-being with renowned spa rituals and healing touches. In the spa, you can pamper your skin with facial treatments featuring premium ingredients and nurture your bodywith massage treatments employing time-honoured, hands-on massage techniques gleaned from around the world. There was a huge steam room

97

and sauna that had windows so you could take the view in whilst pampering yourself. Alongside this was a huge hydra pool with assorted waterfall treatments. We had the Elemis deep tissue muscle massage which so relaxing we had to go for a nap after. In the evening we went to a formal gala night at the pinnacle Grill where everyone in the restaurant was dressed in black tie. During the evening we met Seth Wayne who is the Brand Ambassador for Holland America, and spent some time chatting to him about the company and the rest of the trip. Pinnacle Grill is the premium steak house restaurant on board. The menu focuses on premium ingredients expertly prepared—from wild-caught king salmon from Alaska to sustainably raised beef from Washington State’s Double R Ranch. And, every evening in this venue offers a chance for you to experience the signature recipes of Culinary Council Chef David Burke. Complementing your perfectly prepared meals are boutique wines from the Pacific Northwest and other celebrated vineyards from around the world. As recommended by Seth we opted for the Clothesline Candied Bacon which is a signature dish of Pinnacle and a must have. We opted for the dry aged Delmonico Steak which was superb – the texture was like butter and was rich in flavour. I also managed to persuade the head sommelier to take me into the wine cellar which was heaven on earth. I don’t think I have ever seen so much wine in one place. After dinner we then headed to the Billboard Bar where two sparing pianists did song requests to duel to the delight of the crowd. We stayed here for the rest of the night sampling the extensive cocktail menu. 98

Day 4 We woke with somewhat of a fuzzy head on day 4 (cocktails were the culprit!), but that was soon clear when we walked onto our balcony and saw the paradise that is Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos. I can honestly say I have never seen sea that blue – it didn’t look real. After a delicious breakfast we got ready for our day excursion which was the catamaran trip. This was a great way to experience the island and once we had gone around a cove we did some snorkelling off the boat. We saw lots of colourful local fish and it was great fun. One back on board we sampled some of the local rum cocktails and had some local music on and the party started. The catamaran then took us to a secluded beach to rest up for the later part of the afternoon – the sand on the beach was so silky and the sea so calm to swim in, without doubt I will be returning to the island. After a chilled day of sun and sea we made our way back to the ship to refresh and have a nap before dinner. After dinner we attended Blend. The first of its kind for Holland America Line and the only purpose-built wine-blending venue at sea, Blend has a tasting table that accommodates 10 guests who can create their own blend from a selection of five barrels of single-vineyard red wine. In addition to participating in the blending process, guests also learn about wine from the ship’s wine expert Lily, who leads the blending session. Lily was an absolute star and her knowledge of wine was second to none – she was so passionate about wine and also had an amazing warm personality. At the end of the session we blended our own wine and got to take it away – I would highly recommend doing this.

Day 5 We woke on day 5 to the beautiful Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic which was a chilled day for us – we wandered around the cove and took in the sights and had a leisurely walk around. Had a spot of lunch and some Champagne and watched the world go by. We had a busy night ahead of us so we went back to the ship and also spent the afternoon enjoying the lido before getting ready for the evening events. We started the evening with dinner in the Tamarind restaurant which is the perfect place to explore the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan. We had a selection of dishes and they didn’t disappoint – Lobster and Shrimp Gyoza with Smoked Shoyu, Pickled Ginger and the Chinese Five Spiced Baby Back Ribs followed with Roasted Pork Belly Char Siu and the Mongolian Barbecue Lamb Chops. We even managed a dessert which was a Yuzu Cheesecake which had a delicious citrus note to it. Well worth the calories. Once we had finished dinner we went onto the orange party – a Dutch annual tradition where once a year in Holland there is an annual holiday celebrating the Dutch national colour of orange. Everyone has to wear orange and it was one big party.

Day 6 This was a day at sea and allowed us to enjoy the ship and wander around and do some tax free shopping – always a fun thing to do and there was plenty of choice on board. We relaxed by the lido and had some cocktails and got talking to some people from Florida who were lovely and then

went to the room and watched a movie on the extensive movie list on board. We were lucky to have dinner with the Captain Noel O’Driscoll in the dining room, which was great to have time to ask him about his career and some of the fun goings on he has experienced on ships. Highlights were the Lobster Ravioli and the Braised Beef Gnocchi and some Aperol Spritz to add to the Italian theme. To end the night we went to BB Kings – this was our favourite place to spend the evening as the singing and music show was beyond fantastic.

Day 7 We arrived at Key West on our last full day of the trip – this is a place I have wanted to visit for a long time and it didn’t disappoint. We made our way around on one of the mini train trips around the island which was great to soak up the heritage and beautiful architecture. We then did one of the local tours around the Hemingway Rum Distillery which is still owned by the family. This was a great insight into him and also the tour was really informative – and we got to sample lots of rum! Dinner that night was in the orange club and of course we sample the nightlife on board as it was our last night – and went back to Billboard where the duelling pianists rock out your song requests which was fantastic.

Day 8 We woke up in Fort Lauderdale and disembarked to start our journey back to the UK. Both my colleague and I left Holland America with such fond memories and met some great people. Our pre conceived views on cruises were completely changed. We were lucky enough to meet the Brand Ambassador Seth Wayne who absolutely lived and breathed Holland America and made our experience an amazing one. We will definitely be back with the pinnacle class by Holland America as we loved every minute of it! www.hollandamerica.com 99

Britain’s Favourite Carribean Island From its first British settlers in the 1620s through to full independence in 1966, Barbados has a remarkable history with Britain, one that is woven into its very fabric

B

arbados and the UK have a longstanding historic relationship which dates back to the 17th century; this relationship is complex and is just one of many that contribute to the island’s rich history and heritage. In 1625, The first English ship arrived in Barbados, Captain John Powell and his crew were sailing from Brazil to England and went off course, due to a navigational error. Powell found the island to be uninhabited and claimed the island in the name of King James 1 of England. On February 17th, 1627 a second voyage, led by his brother Henry saw a group of English settlers land in ‘St James Town’ which is situated in present-day Holetown in the Saint James district. Barbados became officially independent on 30 November 1966, and since this time the relationship between Britain and the island has remained strong. From the point of settlement until Barbadian independence, Barbados remained the only Caribbean island to never change hands between other European nations.

Senate of Barbados. Visit the west wing and you’ll find The Barbados Museum of Parliament and the Barbados National Heroes Gallery. The British influence can still be felt today, most notably in the language spoken (English), but also the red post boxes found across the island, the names of various places on island and the fact islanders still drive on the left side of the road.

Electric power is taking performance cars to new heights, and F1 team-turned-car-maker McLaren has been at the cutting edge of that technology. The latest chapter in that particular story is the gorgeous new Artura, which combines a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 671bhp. Not only can it drive for around 18 miles without burning a drop of petrol, but it can also roar from 0-62mph in three seconds flat. It’s the most fuel-efficient McLaren ever, yet it can still hit 205mph. www.mclaren.com

NICE TO C YOU

I

n the world of the medium-sized executive saloon car, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has always been the comfy, elegant choice. Completely revamped, the go-to saloon has been modernised with extra technology and a striking new look, not to mention a forward-thinking new interior. The old C-Class’ rounded lines are gone, replaced with sharp lines and narrower lights designed to make it look sportier and classier all at once. The interior has had a similar upgrade, getting a smooth new look and a huge central screen, as well as a big digital instrument cluster and a skeletal sports steering wheel. It’s all very futuristic. As are the oily bits found under the skin. Mild-hybrid technology is found across all the 1.5and 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines, with a 48-volt electrical system giving the car a little extra boost when it’s under load and allowing it to shut down when coasting – all in the name of saving fuel. But the really progressive options are the plug-in hybrids, which will now manage around 60 miles on electricity, with the petrol or diesel engines taking over when that range is exhausted. As before, the C-Class will be available in saloon and estate forms, but rumour has it the gorgeous coupe and convertible versions won’t be carried over to the new model. However, there’s speculation the gap in the market may be filled by a standalone new model. Watch this space. Mercedes-Benz C-Class, £TBC, www.mercedes-benz.co.uk 104

DEFENDERS OF ANARCHY loves With the new Defender, Land Rover has a hit on its hands. Easier to live with and easier to drive than its predecessor, the car has finally struck the balance between usability and ruggedness. But the bigwigs at Land Rover’s Coventry HQ obviously thought more power was needed. So now the Defender has raided the Jaguar sports car factory for the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine that now rests under the Defender’s bonnet. That means you get 518bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.9 seconds, without sacrificing the Defender’s legendary off-road capability. It can all be summed up in three words: unnecessary but awesome. SOLAR FLAIR Luxury yachts seem to be car makers’ latest plaything. Aston Martin and Lexus have both dabbled in the high-end marine market, and now Volkswagen, is dipping its toe with solar-powered catamarans. Perhaps they aren’t as sporty as some of the company’s road cars, but they’re every bit as clever, using solar panels and VW’s electric motor technology to navigate the world’s oceans quietly and efficiently. Built by Austrian firm Silent Yachts, the first VW-powered examples will arrive in 2022, with the German company’s electric motors fitted across the entire Silent range. It’s a line-up that includes several luxury cruisers, including the mid-range ‘55’ model seen here. Capable of 100 miles a day using electricity gathered from the sun’s rays, the four-cabin cruiser can be crewed by just two people, which Silent Yachts claim will make it perfect for “families cruising with or without additional crew”. Silent 55 from €1.97m (~£1.7m), www.silent-yachts.com

This year marks 45 years since Volkswagen changed the performance car game with the Golf GTI. First launched in 1976, the hot hatchback showed us fast cars didn’t have to be presumptuous, expensive or impractical. To celebrate, VW has created a special version of the alreadyhardcore GTI Clubsport, which packs an extra 54bhp over the standard Golf GTI, taking the total to 296bhp. The 45 model is set apart by 19-inch alloy wheels, larger air intakes and a bigger rear spoiler. There’s a new exhaust system, too, as well as black trim and some ‘45’ graphics down the side. But performance is key, so VW has removed the electronic speed limiter, allowing the Clubsport 45 to cruise past 155mph. VW Golf GTI Clubsport 45, £TBC www.volkswagen.co.uk

GENI NIU US James Fossdyke finds out whether Scandi brand Polestar can really take the eco-friendly fight to Tesla

I

f Boris Johnson is to be believed, electric cars are the future. Someday soon we will be zipping about the country in silence, with the clatter of exploding petrol replaced by the quieter and cleaner hum of electrons. No more washing smelly diesel off your hands after a trip to the filling station; instead you’ll simply plug into a nearby lamp post to recharge the batteries. That’s the dream, at least. For the time being, the reality is somewhat less appealing. Instead of refilling the tank in a matter of minutes, you spend hours sipping tepid coffee in miserable motorway service stations while the charger transfers power as grudgingly as Donald Trump. Instead of blatting down the motorway with music

106

blaring, you sit in cold silence at 56mph, desperately hoping the car will hold enough charge to get you home. Unless, of course, you own a Tesla. The cars will drive a long way between charges, and the Supercharger network is reliable and fast, all of which means you spend less time with your nose in a disgusting flat white from Stella’s butty van. But now there’s a new company on the scene, and it’s here to play Tesla at its own game. Unless you’re a fan of niche motorsport or high-

performance Volvos, you’ve probably never heard the name Polestar. But the company that started out turning Volvos into race cars is now building its own cutting-edge eco-friendly vehicles that play Tesla at its own game. Key to this fight is the new Polestar 2 – a £50,000 four-door designed to take on the Tesla Model 3. With two electric motors providing 402bhp and four-wheel drive, as well as a 78kWh battery that (allegedly) offers up to 292 miles of all-electric driving, it stacks up well. It works on the road, too, because unlike a Tesla, the interior doesn’t feel as though it’s made from old wheelie bins. Although that

might be down to the fact Polestar has nicked half the interior trim from a Volvo. And the touchscreen is based on a sort of Android operating system, meaning it works just like your mobile phone. All of which makes the Polestar cleaner and more intuitive than pretty much any other car on the road. Combine that with strong performance, fine

107

handling and decent ride comfort, and it’s every inch the premium saloon. In fact, it’s better than a Tesla. Or at least it would be, were it not for one fundamental flaw. You see, it might manage 292 miles to a charge if you pootle around town like a saint, but on a long drive – where range really matters – I couldn’t get it to do much more than 180 miles between trips to the plug, even driving at a snail’s pace. Admittedly, the weather was cold and the days were short, but not excessively so. It

108

wouldn’t be such an issue were the charging network larger and more reliable, but the world just hasn’t caught up yet. It’s a crying shame, but it’s hard to recommend the 2 as anything other than a second car. Fortunately, though, Polestar makes another car that isn’t waiting on the world to catch up. It’s called the Polestar 1, and it’s a breathtakingly pretty two-door coupe with a clever plug-in hybrid powertrain that effectively combines a petrol engine and two electric motors. The 77-mile all-electric range is perfect for plodding around town, while the 2.0-litre petrol engine is there to provide some peace of mind on longer journeys. When the battery dies, you can either recharge as you would with an electric car, or let the engine take over, turning the car into a conventional

petrol-powered vehicle. But the engine does more than just save you from dodgy coffee and unappetising burgers. Working in tandem with the electric motors, it provides a massive 601bhp that takes you from a standstill to 62mph in about four seconds. That’s fast in anyone’s book, and although the delivery is eerily subdued, it will very quickly put you on the wrong side of the law. And it isn’t just the engine that’s high-tech. The bodywork is made from carbon fibre, the rear spoiler rises and falls depending on the situation and the suspension is adjustable to make the car comfier or more agile, depending on your preferences. It all allows the Polestar to handle beautifully, with an impressive lightness that’s missing from, say, a Bentley Continental. It still has a slightly soft side, though, which is ideal for covering long distances in comfort. But again, there are catches. For starters,

just 1,500 examples will be built, so Polestar hasn’t bothered to develop a right-handdrive model for the UK. You can buy a 1 in this country, but the steering wheel will be on the wrong side. And when you slide into that left-hand seat, you’ll find yourself ensconced in a cabin stolen entirely from Volvo. That’s no bad thing – Volvo parts are hardly found in the bargain basement – but it’s a bit galling when you’ve paid a frankly outrageous £139,000 to own one of these cars. But for all that, I like the Polestar 1. Nothing else on the road attracts so many admiring glances, and few things intrigue like a car nobody is likely to see elsewhere. I know all about its flaws, but somehow, I just don’t care. That’s the sign of a truly great car.
