My life ... ROD THORNLEY, SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPIST AT ARRENTEE SPORTS MANAGEMENT LTD

How would you describe yourself ? I’m talkative, generally a happy person, like to be the centre of attention, quite confident and sometimes cocky. Where is home? And work? I was brought up in Salford but lived in the Hale area since 2007. I love Hale, it has everything I need, a very friendly place, hardly any trouble, full of beautiful restaurants, a couple of nice bars, and on the edge of the countryside so long walks are on my doorstep. I’m currently running a clinic at CPASE in Mobberley after doing a near 20 year shift at Manchester United. I also worked with the England national team between 2001-2015. What did you want to be when you were younger? Funnily enough for a while I wanted to be an accountant for a couple of years, then a footballer, then I kind of fell into being a masseur and the rest is history. Name a few of your favourite places to be... My favourite holiday destinations are Maldives (just the only place I’ve ever been where I could take my shoes off on arrival and had nothing on my feet till I left, heaven), Dubai and New York. They all have very fond memories and will visit all again at some point. I’m a big fan of Sigiriya and Cibo restaurants in Hale and. My local is the Elk of Hale and I do have to admit, anyone who follows me on social media will know I’m a frequent visitor. Dunham Massey and Tatton Park are two lovely walks.

...I kind of fell into being a masseur and the rest is history

What or who inspires you? I know it’s boring, but I have to say, my parents. They have always been there for me, showered me with love, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen two people as in love as them, even after 50 years. They were very liberal when me and my siblings were growing up and I learnt a lot from them and their parenting. An honorary mention has to go Bryan Robson though, an inspirational captain of a bang-average Manchester United team I supported growing up in the eighties. What was the last gift you gave someone? Strangely, a shot dispenser for parties.

Tell us a secret/fun fact. I have many, many, secrets, but I’ll save them for my book written on my deathbed. Fun fact: I went to 4 World Cups, and won many titles with Man Utd, but by far the best experience I ever had was playing football for an England side in an unofficial World Cup at the age of 41 over in Thailand with many ex-professional players. Your mastermind subject? Easy, The US Office, the greatest show ever made. What’s been your biggest life lesson? Friends will come and go but family will always be there for you. rtsportmassage.co.uk Instagram @rt.sportmassage

DREAMLAND Lily Allen talks to The Cheshire Magazine about her debut TV role in Sky’s new big-hearted comedy drama

D

reamland is Sky’s brand new drama about secrets, lies, loves and aspirations within a family of four sisters. Set in the sun-drenched British seaside town of Margate, it is a dark comedic exploration of multi-generational female relationships, and their (somewhat dysfunctional) family dynamics. Eldest sister Trish (Agyeman) is pregnant for the third time with her partner Spence (Kiell Smith-Bynoe). And this time, she’s decided: it’s going to be a girl. Her two sisters Clare (Gabby Best) and Leila (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) rally around her with their mum (Frances Barber) and their Margate-legend nan (Sheila Reid), “manifesting” a little girl at Trish’s ‘mani-festival’. But when their other sister, Mel (Allen), makes an unexpected reappearance back into their lives, her return threatens to destabilise the entire family. A knock on the their door and their ‘Dreamland’ is no more…

12

Tell us about your character Mel Mel is a bit of a dark horse within the family make up. She has aspirations outside of Margate where her family live. She’s tried to make a life for herself away from that all, and that’s failed, and she has now returned. She loves her family, each person for different reasons. I think she just feels a bit misunderstood, and maybe not heard and not seen – but’s probably not well equipped to be able to deal with it.

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature

What drew you to working on Dreamland? I had just moved to New York, but I bring my kids back to the UK for summer to spend time with their dad, so when this landed on my desk, and I heard it was shooting in Margate – and I love Margate – I was instantly hooked. Of course, I thought the script was amazing and this being a Merman Production was a big pull for me too. I trusted their instinct with it, and I loved the short that I had seen of it in its previous incarnation.

You say you love Margate, how was it filming there? It was great! I rented a little house in the square and brought my kids across. It was excruciatingly hot. But it was lovely. It’s steeped in summertime history, that town.

There are many different generations within the family, but is there a relationship for Mel that stands out most to you? The relationship between Trish, Spence and Mel are particularly interesting. They grew up inseparable friends, but once Trish and Spence got together, Mel was somewhat side-lined and felt abandoned by them. I f ind that most interesting because that wouldn’t necessarily occur to anyone else, but it is glaringly obvious to her. If she was able to articulate these

“ I think all good comedies stem from reality and darkness, and

the mundanity of life. People come together and laugh about those things, and I think this show does that really well.

feelings, then it could have sorted itself out, but she doesn’t have that in her.

How do you think Dreamland strikes the balance with it being a comedy but covering important topics such as race, feminism, and class? I think all good comedies stem from reality and darkness, and the mundanity of life. People come together and laugh about those things, and I think this show does that really well.

What are Mel’s dreams? I don’t even think Mel knows what her dreams are. She is just very reactive and knows that she used to be miserable in Margate and couldn’t see a way of rectifying that. Hence why she did the classic geographic change and tries to escape. In her head she wanted to thrive in Paris, working in fashion, but that didn’t work out, so she is back at square one. She currently doesn’t really have aspirations other than to just not be her, she is just escaping herself.

With a female heavy cast, female writers, and a female production team – do you think this had any impact on the show? It’s funny because when we were in rehearsal doing the roundtables, there was such a good vibe and energy and I had never experienced anything like it. And then I was like, oh yeah, it’s because it’s nearly all women. But in the other hand, it’s my first TV job so I don’t have anything else to compare it to. But I can tell you that I had an amazing time and have made some lasting relationships.

thumbs for a few hours, so it was nice to get up and get straight onto set and start working. I do find the waiting around on set quite interesting because I’ve got quite sever ADHD, so my concentration levels are difficult to manage in those situations. The long days don’t scare me because I’m a grafter, I like to keep busy.

Are there any similarities between you and your character? I’ve felt very misunderstood in my life. I’ll seem very visually present to people in my life but at the same time not really understood or listened to. I think that’s what attracted me to Mel in the first place, the similarities not the differences. I felt an affinity with her.

Did you get the itch to do more acting after? I’m doing more theatre in summer and developing a few things with different people. But also, I am back in the studio making music!

What do you think people will take from the series? I think it’s easy to point fingers at the guilty party but there’s always two sides to a story. I think we are in a time where people are quick to blame and shame people, but we’re complicated as human beings and we do things for an all manner of reasons. Everyone comes into the world the same, right? We all become who we are from learned behaviour and our surroundings and our environment – and Mel is the same. She’s done a terrible thing, but she isn’t a terrible person.

This is your debut TV acting role. How did you find the filming? I get up at 5am anyway, even when I am not working so it was actually quite nice. When I get up at 5 in Brooklyn, I’m just sat twiddling my 15

Clare Stobart goes toe-to-toe with Savannah Marshall to find out more about her life inside and outside the ring

T

he most exciting boxing match I have ever watched was Savannah Marshall’s fight against Claressa Shields. It was outstanding and gave Sheilds the toughest fight of her career. Even as one of the biggest punches in the women’s code, Savannah remains grounded and humble despite her outstanding career. I had the honour of sitting down to learn more about this polite, kind and engaging Geordie athlete at the helm of women’s boxing.

22

You’re a northern girl who can pack a punch, what made you first step into the ring? I’m originally from Hartlepool, which is an old shipping town. I became interested in boxing at 11 through curiosity as one of my neighbours boxed. I went to Hartlepool Headland Boys Club where the coach was abrupt and said, “if you’ve come to mess about you can do one now!”, but from the first session I was hooked. It was me and about 30 boys and I fell in love with the competitive side of the sport; who could hit the bag the most or do the most press-ups? I never ever won anything, but really got into wanting to! Prior to boxing, I only did sports at school, like hockey and netball, which I was really good at. When I joined the club, the coaches and boys didn’t want me there, they didn’t even speak to me. I joke now and say, “I never got the memo”. It was all I thought about, I would go to school, come home, go straight to the gym, have my tea, bath and bed. On repeat. I was obsessed with how it made me feel. We went to spar with another club, but the

You are one of the first pro female boxers to headline the O2. How do you feel to be a part of this incredible change in attitude towards female sport? Can you feel the support of the masses?

coach wouldn’t let me in, yet now they have umpteen national female champions! Twenty years ago, most coaches didn’t want females there. Tim actually became my Amateur Coach, and we are still quite close, even now, he is like a father figure for over twenty years. He has daughters and didn’t want me there because he didn’t want to see me get punched in the face. Even the boys wouldn’t hit me because I was a girl, but then I’d hit them, and they’d soon join in. As an amateur, I boxed for Great Britain. I represented us at 4 World Championships, 2 Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games. I had 118 fights and I lost 15. By the age of 26, I had been fighting for 15 years and at this point, I had lost a lot of love for the sport. It became a job rather than a hobby. I was ready to walk away, and then Floyd Mayweather came along and offered me a promotion to move to Las Vegas and be part of the Money Team. I recall thinking, “Wow, I’ll have a Lamborghini and a penthouse on the strip!”. It was the biggest shock of my life. I lasted 6 months and didn’t earn a penny because everything was so expensive. I recall saying, “I’m not paying $9 for Coco Pops!”. I ended up spending all my money and coming home. But making my professional debut with Floyd Mayweather in 2017, in Las Vegas on the Mayweather/Connor McGregor undercard was massive for me. It really felt like I was starting from the top.

I have spent my entire career wanting to headline the O2. Initially, to have a female fight on TV was really rare, whereas now you can watch 2 or more. It is more normalised, female sports are everywhere. I’m even trained a little in Brazilian Ju-jitsu, and there are so many women in their 40s and 50s who just love it. It is so empowering. There really is a women’s revolution going on in sports at the moment. It is massive. I felt like first you had football, then rugby and now boxing. It’s the first time the whole country has been pushing female sport. Even broadcasters and brands are getting behind it. We all needed the whole country to come together to take us to the next level.

Speaking of your incredible success, what rituals or routines do you have to quell any pre-fight nerves? I suffered really, really bad with my nerves. I always wore the same white Adidas boots, but then they got discontinued! By the time the last pair were finished, they literally had no grip left.

23

Feature | The CHESHIRE Magazine

Pre-match, I would have a can of Red Bull, but as I got older and learnt about nutrition and realised it was probably the worst thing I could have done. It wasn’t uncommon for me to be sick or have a nervous rash all over my neck and face. My last amateur fight was in the Olympic Games in 2017 and I was beaten in the quarter finals. I remember thinking I don’t want to do this anymore. I missed out on Olympic medals, all down to my nerves. Since turning pro, my mindset now is that I was never meant to be here. I was going to quit, so this is all such a bonus for me. It’s crazy how a little tweak can just change your whole outlook. In my last fight, I was so excited. Nothing really simulates boxing other than sparring. You wear headguards and bigger gloves, and whilst it isn’t a real fight, it does help you to work on game plan, which is a great way to quell pre-fight nerves.

What motivates you to stay in the ring? All I’ve ever done is box. Now I’m a little bit older and at the back end of my career. I’m injured. I have arthritis in my elbows. Ninety per cent of me does it for the money, not a lot of people would admit that, but it’s true. Before you box, you’ve paid for sparring partners, coaches and gyms. Then you have to pay managers, promoters and taxes. Now I am a pro,

24

I have sponsorships that help me to live month to month. In return, I advertise companies on my kit, sports bras, social media and things like that. My biggest sponsor at the minute is called Manjaros who originate from the North East of England where I’m from, but you can find them in Manchester too.

You now live in Cheshire, where is your favourite place to go? I have recently moved to Holmes’s Chapel, which is great. I really like a routine. I like to be at home, at the boxing gym in Congleton and CPASE. I don’t go out of that triangle. But I love seafood, so ventured to Cibo in Wilmslow once.

As a valued member of CPASE - can you walk us through your usual routine? The main reason I joined was for recovery. I have the boxing gym where I do all my training. Recovery methods like cryotherapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy aren’t readily available so to have them on my doorstep is amazing. I use cryotherapy up to 4 times a week. Followed by 15 minutes both the traditional and infrared sauna, finishing with 30 minutes in the hydrotherapy pool. I have sparred 3 times a week for 20 years, which is a lot when you’re taking punches to the head. Which is a bit scary if you think about it. As I get older, I worry a lot more about my health. There have been times when I’ve come home with

As a role model to young people, what would be your best piece of advice?

Where do you see yourself going next? Have you another fight? I am fighting in my home city of Newcastle on the 17th June against Franchon Crews Dezurn who is the undisputed super middleweight world champion.

And finally, I know you get asked this a lot, but what would you go back and tell your younger self? I wouldn’t actually say anything to her. I was painfully shy; I didn’t know how to communicate with people. I had 2 friends in school and didn’t speak to anyone else. Throughout my amateur career, my self-confidence really hindered it. I can confidently say not being able to handle pressure lost me an Olympic gold medal. But now, all these bumps in the road and little things have helped me grow. Looking at that 15 year old girl who couldn’t even look at herself in the mirror, but loved boxing, I would just let her crack on. You are going to get there in the end. PHOTOGRAPHY © KAT HANNON

headaches, which really makes me think. It is a dangerous sport. People with long careers, even in other sports like football, have studies that show Alzheimer’s is a possibility in later life. I first used an oxygen chamber 10 years ago when I was representing Team GB to speed up a stress fracture I had in my shin from running, it really helped with my injury recovery. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is backed by evidence, which for me is the main thing. I don’t feel much during the session, but then I train really hard, so for me to notice changes is rare, yet the benefits are amazing. It isn’t just for athletes either, it has so many overall physical benefits, especially for brain health. I have a heavy training camp leading up to the next fight. This is one thing I do for myself; it is literally aiding my brain. I started doing yoga classes in October, which really helped both my physical and mental well-being. Weekly, I do 3, 40 minutes strength and conditioning sessions, focussing on power and strength, essentially pushing. But with yoga, you’re holding your body weight in strange positions which is unnatural to me, and I really struggle! Whilst boxing is my main source of cardio, I use running for weight loss, before a fight, which is either 40 minute fat burners or sprints on the treadmill. I often come to CPASE with April Hunter who is also a pro boxer but I try not to train with her because I always turn it into a competition. Our careers are at different stages, she is in the early stages of hers, with 5 or 6 fights a year, whereas I tend to only fight 2 or 3 times. Whilst she follows a similar recovery routine as I do, she is currently fighting more often, so is training harder than me.

Enjoy it. Female boxing wasn’t really a thing when I started, it was more of a novelty and I was seen as a bit of a freak. I was only 13 when I was turned away from sparring at another club. I remember thinking I didn’t want to spar anyway, but I think anyone else would think I’m not meant to be here. I’m not welcome. Which could take you completely off the path of something you love. It’s all about loving what you do, for you, not other people. If you listen to negative comments, it will stop you from achieving amazing things.

ASK THE EXPERT Global Head of Fragrance Céline Roux and master perfumer Marie Salamagne discuss the new Blossoms collection Can you tell us about the trees these Blossoms were inspired by?

Céline: The three trees we have focused on can be found in China – we’ve been travelling to China for many years now and have always been inspired by Chinese blossoms. With this year’s collection, we’re bringing together favourite Blossoms of the past: Osmanthus Blossom, Nashi Blossom and Star Magnolia. Each brings different facets of fragrance to the table, but each also embraces the joys of spring and that unmistakable feeling of being in nature.

How did you come up with the ideas for each fragrance?

Céline: A colleague in our regional team introduced me to the osmanthus flower and I was amazed that such tiny flowers can produce such a powerful fragrance. I was drawn to its unique scent, combining peachy and soft suede notes. It’s one of few blossoms that you can get a natural extraction from, which gave us even more motivation to work with it. A few years later, while working on a different Blossoms collection I discovered the nashi blossom and I loved its striking aesthetic: speckled white and black blooms – very Jo Malone London. Balancing these delicate flowers with the juicy, fruity appeal of the nashi pear gave us a fascinating contrast to explore. Star Magnolia had a different point of origin: when I was on a trip to Shanghai in 2014, I stumbled upon a city park that was full of these amazing trees in flower. I was blown away by the sight of all these white blossoms as well as the divine

smell, so I decided there and then to create a fragrance around it. All three Blossom fragrances have different personalities and tonalities, but all three celebrate the arrival of spring.

What was it like creating the Osmanthus Blossom fragrance?

Marie: This was actually the first Blossom fragrance I ever worked on with Céline, so it was a very exciting process for me. I hadn’t had the chance to travel much to China at that point, so it served as a great introduction to the incredibly rich nature and culture of the country. I wanted to capture the sense of airiness that passes through the petals of the flower and really capture its luminosity. Osmanthus also has a fruity velvety note, which is quite different from other white flowers that can be more heavily scented. It’s probably the fruitiest flower that it’s possible to work with, so the challenge for us was to make this fruity note light and airy, in a Jo Malone London style. We also balanced the luminous, fruity part of the fragrance with soft cashmere wood, giving us a Blossom scent that was incredibly joyful and uplifting, but also had an underlying softness and a compelling quality.

How do the three fragrances complement each other?

Céline: Osmanthus Blossom is the most sparkling of the collection: it’s airy, luminous and just so joyful. Nashi Blossom balances the delicacy of those exquisite flowers with the distinctive, bright juiciness of the glorious nashi pear. Star Magnolia is softer and creamier, delivering that unique, beautiful springtime scent captured in Shanghai. All three fragrances have different personalities, but all represent the arrival of spring: that moment that flowers open on the trees in all their full, fragrant freshness. jomalone.co.uk

INTRODUCING…

M I L L I E F E R O Z E F R O M F E R O Z E P I L AT E S Millie, what led you to open Feroze Studio? I first discovered pilates when I was 18. After years of dragging myself to the gym and dreading exercise, I was so happy to find a form of movement that I genuinely loved, looked forward to and gave me the desired results. My Friday morning class at a tiny local studio quickly became the highlight of my week. Myself and the same five women would laugh/cry our way through The Hundred (if you know, you know) and leave feeling strong, toned and energised. That experience planted the seed to become an instructor myself one day. Fast forward two years of training with Body Control Pilates and regular teaching slots in London and Amsterdam, I’m so excited to have opened my own reformer pilates studio in beautiful Chester which already feels like home.

Why did you choose Chester? When I moved to Chester from London, I missed the array of luxury boutique pilates studios that offered very personalised programming catered to my individual body and needs. After toying around with the idea of recreating that same experience in Chester, it became clear there was real demand so I took the leap and

38

Feroze Pilates was born. Chester has such a warm and welcoming community and independent businesses are really championed here so it was the perfect place to set up camp.

Talk us through the benefits of reformer pilates. The benefits to reformer pilates are truly endless and what I love most is they are applicable to all shapes, sizes, genders, ages and fitness abilities... • Strength and tone: The springs allow for changes in resistance to continuously increase the challenge and intensity of each exercise. • Improved functional movement: The feedback from the reformer helps you develop a conscious awareness of how you move your body in day to day life. This enables you to correct muscle imbalances and improve postural alignment so you can move better without aches, pains or injuries. It’s the perfect antidote to a sedentary lifestyle. • Improved posture: The focus on form and alignment will have you standing taller, breathing more efficiently and less prone to tension in the neck, shoulders and back. • Flexibility: Pilates incorporate dynamic stretching (moving the muscles and joints through

full range of motion whilst moving as opposed to holding stretches whilst still) which is a very efficient way to improve flexibility. • Better mental health: Each exercise has a specific breathing pattern that will help to calm the nervous system and reduce stress and anxiety. The focus on technique also helps bring the mind into the present moment. • Fun! Most importantly, everyone has fun whilst doing reformer. And you enjoy it, you’re more likely to be consistent. And if you’re consistent, you’re going to see and feel the benefits.

What can people expect from a class? Feroze Pilates offers small group classes and private sessions in a beautiful modernised outhouse five minutes from Chester city centre. My clients range from people starting out in their fitness journey and new mums, to individuals recovering from injury and avid pilates movers so we have a variety of beginner, intermediate and advanced classes to choose from. I also have mother-daughter duos and groups of friends who opt for private group classes. When you step into the studio, you can always expect a feel-good playlist, fresh flowers and endless candles to create a calming space to move your body and destress from daily life. We also have a coffee station for your post class caffeine fix - very important - and free parking on site. ferozestudiopilates.co.uk Instagram @ferozereformerpilates

Has Your Relationship Hit Cruise Control? WORDS: Alex Mellor-Brook, Dating and Relationship Coach, Co-founder at Select Personal Introductions

S

ettling into a groove is great for motorway driving, not so good for relationships! This tendency, also described as the roommate rut, often creeps up on us, and - disturbingly - it’s more often found in good relationships than ones that are rocky. Why? Because we can get into a habit of simply maintaining our current situation, and that means there’s no growth. Without growth, all relationships inevitably, if slowly, decline into habit, and then into indifference. The good news is that there’s a lot we can do about cruise control.

Rebuild your relationship’s foundations Almost certainly you started out with romance and passion, connection and communication. These things can slide out of sight as we get to know each other better but they can easily be restored to their central place. Begin by reflecting back on the high points

of your time together: when were things at their steamiest and most passionate, which activities gave you the most intimacy and connection? Rebuilding those key aspects into your time together can reignite some of those early feelings of joy in each other’s company and that puts you back into a higher emotional gear.

Master your love language Author Gary Chapman identified five love languages: #1 - Affirmative words #2 - Quality time #3 - Physical touch #4 - Receiving gifts #5 - Acts of service. These five ways we express love for each other manifest very differently and recognising our own love language and seeing if it differs from our partners can help us to appreciate how they reach out to us, and how the way we reach out to them might not be as clear to them as we’ve always thought. We can ‘learn’ the love language of our partner, so that we both see their loving acts and can communicate our love for them in ways they understand more easily. This improves our connection and leads to renewed intimacy.

Remember to flirt Remember flirting? It was probably something we did instinctively in the early days of our relationship, but 44

cruise control takes flirting out of the equation. Why should we flirt? So many reasons: flirting boosts your partner’s self-esteem and creates emotional closeness, it adds laughter, which in turn reduces stress, and by breaking the monotony it allows new ideas and activities to enter the relationship. Flirtation can feel artificial to start with, but the rewards are usually almost instantaneous. Start by calling your partner by a new pet name - make it sexy. Compliment them on their appearance. Listen, really listen, to what they say, and ask questions. Touch them more. Smile into their eyes. Flirtation builds energy like nothing else, so be prepared for a high-octane response! Once your partner has become used to your flirtatious ways, they are likely to reciprocate with more loving, more flirty behaviour of their own, and this creates new opportunities for intimacy and pleasure in each other’s company that will revive your marriage and take it out of the rut that it’s fallen into. www.selectservices.co.uk

Everyone is Welcome at Race for Life Cheshire People are being invited to step into spring by signing up to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life events in Cheshire

T

he charity’s much-loved events are returning to Cheshire and anyone who joins between Wednesday March 22nd and Sunday April 30th can claim 30 per cent off the entry fee as part of a special sale by using the code SPRING30. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with headline sponsor Standard Life, is an inspiring series of 3k, 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research. This is the 30th year of Race for Life and participants will receive an exclusive medal to mark the milestone. The Race for Life events at Chester, Delamere Forest, Tatton Park and Warrington, between the 21st of May and the 9th of July are open to people of all ages and abilities. Women, men and children can choose from 3k, 5k and 10k events. There is also a chance to take part in Pretty Muddy - a mud-splattered obstacle course - and there’s a Pretty Muddy Kids option too.

Steve Allinson, Race for Life spokesperson for Cheshire, said: “We’d love for as many people as possible across Cheshire to join us during our 30th year of Race for Life.” “Spring is an ideal time to commit to getting a little more active. Sadly, cancer affects all of us in some way. Whether people are living with cancer, taking part in honour of or in memory of a loved one with cancer, or signing up to protect their own children’s future, everyone has a reason to Race for Life. So we’re asking people across Cheshire: “Who will you race for?” “Our Race for Life events are open to all. For some people, the Race for Life is literally a walk in the park. Slow and steady still wins. For others, it’s a jog. Others may opt to push themselves harder, taking up the challenge of the 10K distance.” “But what is for certain is we’re looking forward to welcoming people of all ages and abilities.” One in two people in the UK born after 1960 will get cancer in their lifetime.* Money raised at Race for Life enables scientists to find new

MEET THE CHEF:

A DA M

M c E VOY Executive Chef at April’s Kitchen What’s your first food related memory? Baking with my mum.

Who is your biggest supporter? My wife and 3 sons.

What do you love most about your job? Making people happy. I still enjoy my job of cooking after being a chef for over 30 years as food concepts and ingredients are always changing, which makes the job exciting.

What would you want to have as your last meal? Pulled brisket with nduja, lobster ravioli, toasted sourdough with a large glass of malbec if a drink was an option.

Describe your style in three words. Classic, versatile, tasty.

Are there any foods you just don’t like? Celery also known as the devil’s food (ha ha).

What’s your favourite dish to create? Thai red curry, because of the style of cooking, the ingredients and I like to eat Asian food at least once a week, whether as a broth, soup or curry.

What do you think is the most challenging ingredient to work with? Tofu as you have to do so much with it to make it taste interesting in my opinion.

Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? Anyone really, colleagues, television, street food or any new ingredient that comes on the scene that takes my interest.

Do you do the cooking at home? Occasionally, we all chip in, especially my wife and my youngest son.

What four ingredients are necessary in your kitchen? Seasonings, oils, root vegetables and spices (sorry, I cheated there).

Any top tips for guests coming to your restaurant? Think casual dining done elegantly, relax and enjoy.

If you could prepare a meal for anyone, who would it be and what would you make? My dad, he is no longer with us, but he loved steak, so I would cook him a classic ribeye steak homemade chips with a peppercorn sauce with English mustard. What are you most proud of in your career? Head Chef at Manchester City Football Academy and becoming a Director of April’s Kitchen.

What dish on your menu would you recommend? Buddha bowl as you can build your own, creating a variety of flavours with a healthy concept. What is your most popular dish? Depends on the day! Monday to Friday its our crushed avocado on toasted sourdough with poached eggs. Saturday our build your own Buddha bowls and Sunday it’s our American style pancake stack or full English breakfast. What advice would you offer an aspiring chef? Being a chef in this climate is tough but there is so much support out there from chefs and mentors that can guide and pass on their experiences. Join an apprenticeship or a get a part time job so you can see it hands on. And like most jobs, you get back what you put in. aprils-kitchen.co.uk

Chef-cooked using high-quality, fresh ingredients, our meals have a shelf-life of up to 7 days, thanks to the state-of-the-art machinery that we operate in our facility in the North West. Based on a subscription plan, our subscribers receive weekly Fuel Boxes that can range from 6 to 24 meals, delivered to doors nationwide for free. Fuel Hubs take just 3 minutes to heat in the microwave, with oven and hob as alternative options. With over 30 meals to choose from and a monthly-changing menu, our chefs, product development leads, and nutritionists are constantly working hard to hit our community of Fuellers with new fuel, new flavours and a new focus. We have built a team of highly skilled, hard-working individuals who all share the same mission; to be the ‘go-to nutrition provider’ for sports teams and elite athletes across the UK, alongside our thriving direct-toconsumer model and bespoke business portal. Whether you need 6 or 6000 meals,

we can provide your company with the nutrition needed to power performance.

Why Fuel Hub? So, what separates Fuel Hub from the pack? Well, our co-founders, Michelle and James Laithwaite, realised there was a huge gap in the industry for Athlete Approved Nutrition; fuel that can elevate everyone to athlete level. What we eat plays a significant role in our fitness, physique and mental well-being, but not everyone has the time to manage macros and calorie count every day - that’s where Fuel Hub steps in. We have built a community of winners, who break down barriers and smash their goals without the added stress of managing their nutrition.

Who We Fuel No matter what your goal is, everyone can use Fuel Hub to maximise their potential. We are an inclusive nutrition provider that appeals to everyday performance, whether that be in sport, business or day-to-day life. We are proud to fuel elite athletes, sports teams and fitness fanatics across a whole range of sports, including football, rugby 52

union, rugby league, boxing, basketball, cricket, cycling, badminton and athletics. Manchester United, Chelsea, Fulham, Brentford, QPR, Warrington Wolves, Harlequins and Team GB are just some of the teams we supercharge, alongside partnerships with the likes of Super League Triathlon, Hyrox and RLWC2021.

Sustainability Striking and bold in their black and neon green appearance, our boxes are made from vegan ink and 100% recycled paper and cardboard. We use 100% pure compostable wool as a naturally sustainable insulator alternative, which is a by-product and is washed and dried with natural detergents. The trays we use are fully recyclable and biodegradable, comprising 98% sugar cane pulp that is eco-friendly and BPA-free. The remaining 2% consists of recycled cardboard that has been repurposed from landfill. Based on a subscription plan, we cook to order here at Fuel Hub, meaning we can successfully operate a zero-food waste policy. Sustainability isn’t just a word we slot into a conversation - it sits at the very core of everything we do. So, are you ready to maximise your mindset, fuel your fitness and elevate your everyday performance? Head to our website to find out how you can become a Fueller today. fuelhub.co.uk

MEET THE M I XOLO GI ST

JAC K

MITCHELL Head Bartender at Present Company, Liverpool

A local bar generating national attention. Named in number 20 in the UK’s Top 50 Cocktail bars, winner of ‘Best New Bar’ just five months after opening, and awarded ‘Best Drink’ for the Biscoff Old Fashioned at the Class Bar Awards; Present Company is a spot for everyone from the discerning drinker to those looking to enjoy a delicious cocktail alongside some great music in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. What is the cocktail you would recommend right now on your menu? The Mango Margarita, it has become one of our unofficial signature drinks and is a firm favourite with our guests. It’s a relatively simple riff on the classic and covers all bases appealing to everyone from a cocktail novice to cocktail nerd. Where do you look to find new trends and inspirations to develop new cocktails? Recently, online and particularly social media is what I have been turning to. There is so much information and inspiration from all over the world, it’s interesting to see what people are doing, what trends are developing and what people are engaging with. I also love being a cocktail tourist whenever I go somewhere new. I'll make a list of bars to visit, ask bartenders for recommendations and immerse myself in the local cocktail scene which always gives me ideas to take back to Liverpool.

What do you order in a bar when you have a rare night off? A Daiquiri is always my go-to. Whilst I’m enjoying that I can take some proper time to read through the menu. I always try to order from a bars’ in-house or specials menu; it’s interesting to order something that’s unique to the bar I'm in, as I know the team would have spent time perfecting it, and it will be the best showcase of what they can do. Could you name an underrated cocktail? Why do you think it doesn’t get the credit it deserves? The category of ‘Sour’ cocktails is pretty well known, a lot of people are familiar with the likes of Whiskey or Amaretto Sours. A lesser known version is a Pisco Sour, I think simply because Pisco isn’t on many peoples’ radar in this part of the world. The spirit category itself is fascinating, and the drink is delicious- well worth trying out! What tips would you give our readers for a signature cocktail to serve friends at a dinner party? • I would always suggest a drink that is easily batchable, so I can get consistent quality drinks out quickly and actually spend time with the people I’m hosting! • Sometimes simple is better; having a really complicated spec list for a cocktail will probably result in you buying lots of obscure bottles you won’t end up using, and the cocktail itself just being a bit of a hot-mess with a hundred different ingredients chucked in. Some of the absolute pinnacle cocktail classics like Martinis, Old Fashioneds, Daiquirs etc. are also some of the most simple to make ingredients-wise. • Get your hands on some good ice. Ice in a cocktail is as important as any other ingredient and can drastically change the final result. Cheap bags from the local supermarket freezer are not going to cut it! presentcompany.bar

Treating Injuries Through Thalassotherapy With travel being so accessible, seeking medical advice abroad has never been easier. Forte Village’s Acquaforte Thalasso & Spa recognises the importance of treating injuries and their pioneering Thalassotherapy circuit can provide the perfect antidote. The journey begins in the first pool with the highest concentration of magnesium salt and saline density which starts to soothe joints and muscles at 38°. At the same temperature, the second pool offers alfresco aromatherapy with a saline and herbal mixture of sea oil, aloe and mint. The seawater in the third pool intensifies a high detox eliminating toxins, its private location allowing for floating massages. The synergy between water and air pressure in the fourth pool helps tone muscles, as well as having an anti-swelling and draining effect. The last two pools offer lower temperatures of around 32° and 25° to help regulate body temperatures. Combined with the Thalasso pools, guests can continue to focus on their medical needs at the AcquaForte Clinic. The Forte Lab is a state-of-the-art diagnostic centre with an extensive medical team on hand to create personalised treatment plans for their guests. W

e have been very fortunate to stay in some beautiful resorts over the years. However, the exceptional natural beauty of the Maldives cannot be surpassed. The amount of “repeaters”, guests who repeat visit The Conrad Rangali, can testify to this. One guest I spoke to had visited no less than 30 times! During our stay, we met guests from Switzerland, United States, Singapore and the UK. The best time to visit the Maldives is between November and April, outside of the monsoon season. In March and April, you will enjoy hot dry weather and quieter resorts with lower humidity levels. The climate can be classed as tropical and temperatures sit between 25 and 31 degrees owing to the Maldives’ position on either side of the equator. Landing at Male airport we were met on arrival and escorted to our seaplane by Faisal, part of The Conrad marketing team. The over ten-hour flight, stopping in Dubai, was soon a distant memory as we were hit by the turquoise, cloudless skies and the

clear ocean. Boarding the seaplane felt as though we were embarking on a true adventure as luggage was loaded onto the craft. The flight is a short, exhilarating trip taking in the geography of The Maldives. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is nestled in the South Ari Atoll and set over two idyllic islands, one being adult only. A 500m bridge connects the two islands and you are transported comfortably via golf buggies. The Hilton Group were the first international hotel group to land in The Maldives. The resort is reminiscent of a Bounty advert – a true, unspoilt paradise. The resort features 151 beautifully designed villas and is home to The Muraka, the world’s first undersea residence. The Muraka is a truly unique three bedroom, two level residence with a master bedroom submerged over 16 feet below sea level. The Muraka is an influencer’s dream with tropical fish, turtles and exotic manta rays floating overhead you are encased in an acrylic dome. Perfect for a once in a lifetime honeymoon stay. The island was chosen by Paris Hilton, greatgranddaughter of Conrad Hilton, the founder of Hilton hotels. as her honeymoon destination. Rooms are serviced twice a day by friendly, inobtrusive staff. The Conrad Rangali has a choice of 12 diverse restaurants and bars offering a range of ambience. This includes the globally renowned Ithaa Undersea Restaurant and celebrity chef restaurant Ufaa by Jereme Leung specialising in Chinese cuisine. The resort also offers a cheese and wine bar. The beach barbecues are to a high standard offering Lobster and Champagne nights and traditional Maldivian cuisine. The Conrad offers the largest wine lists in The Maldives, over 800 labels are offered in the wine cellar stored 2m below ground. The area plays host to the country’s best diving, whale shark areas and sprawling coral reefs. We had the pleasure of assisting in planting coral reef. A conservation initiative

Snorkelling safaris, diving, windsurfing, big-game fishing catamaran sailing and cruising aboard luxury yachts are among the activities on offer. For those seeking more thrilling seeking activities Rangali-Finolhu’s water sports centre and the unique activities on offer include the Jet Pack and X-blade experience. Our Experience Birthdays are such a special occasion, with each being a blessing, and I decided I need a special place to stay and celebrate. Baobab Suites was my location of choice, and I’m so pleased my choice. We were allocated a 2 bedroom suite with the breathtaking views, a large terrace that ran the length of the suite with doors from both the bedrooms and the lounge opening out. At the end of the terrace sat a hot tub, the most comfortable corner sofa and a large dining table where we enjoyed room service on the first evening. As Baobab has a privileged location on a hill you enjoy the views across Adeje and beyond that change throughout the day and night, we spent hours on the terrace just staring out at the scenery, you certainly don’t need a television for entertainment. The immense ocean or mountain views and private pools make you reluctant to venture far from your suite, but one lunch time we decided to visit BB Lounge and enjoyed a bite to eat, such a lovely setting to enjoy a snack or a cocktail or two, situated near to one of the hotel’s pools. We had a magnificent time at Baobab Suites and would highly recommend to anyone wanting somewhere special to enjoy a break with the convenience of having all the essentials that your home would have, perfect if you are visiting with a family. We will remember our time fondly and be sure to return soon. baobabsuites.com

OV ER A N D OU T Jaguar’s F-Type sports car is not long for this world, but the big cat is going out with a bang

T

hey say cats have nine lives, but the Jaguar F-Type appears to have used them up. When it was launched a decade ago, the big cat was one of the most beautiful roadsters in the world, and it remains a looker to this day. But now it’s being killed off by Jaguar’s impending switch to electric power, and the thunderous 5.0-litre supercharged V8 is soon to be silenced. Before it is, though, Jaguar has announced a new special edition to celebrate 75 years of Jaguar sports cars. Simply known as the ‘75’, the new version is available on both Coupe and Convertible versions of the F-Type, but both come with bespoke interior and exterior design features, as well as some extra equipment and an optional green paint job. Specifically, the cars are marked out by their bespoke 20-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheel designs, the silhouette motif on the centre console andl tread plates, and the Interior Black Pack, which gives the cabin a dark, sporty image. Lightweight seats, Windsor leather upholstery and a crafted monogram stitch pattern also set the 75 models apart from more conventional versions. And although ‘standard’ F-Types are offered with 2.0-litre petrol engines, the 75 models come with a choice of two 5.0-litre V8s. There’s the P450 with 444bhp, or the R model with a massive 567bhp. TOP OF THE RANGE loves While the Range Rover Velar has long been one of the most attractive luxury SUVs on the market, Land Rover has seen fit to change things up a bit. This is clearly an evolution, rather than a revolution, of the Velar design, but it’s more minimalist and more high-tech than ever before. Clever new headlights, new bumpers and a huge new touchscreen set it apart from its predecessor, while there’s also an active noise cancelling system to make the Velar whisper quiet on the motorway. As before, there’s a choice of petrol and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid system capable of 32 miles on electrical power alone. Range Rover Velar, from £54,045, landrover.co.uk

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN After three generations and 25 years on sale, Audi has confirmed it will soon kill off its popular TT coupe and convertible models. But the TT is determined to go out with a bang, and Audi has announced a selection of run-out models to celebrate the car’s life. Final Edition versions of the TT and TTS Coupe and Convertible models will be set apart by black exterior design features and red brake callipers, as well as 20-inch alloy wheels. Inside, there’s a sportier cabin with extra leather and Alcantara trim, while Tango Red inserts adorn the seats and air vents on the Coupe. Customers get a choice of three engines, including the high-performance TTS with 316bhp. Audi TT Final Edition, from £41,910, audi.co.uk

BMW has finally launched a more practical estate version of its brilliant M3 performance car, but is the new M3 Touring the car petrolheads were hoping for?

T

he BMW M3 is a special thing indeed. On sale for more than 35 years, it’s the car that showed us executive saloons could be sports cars, too. Over the years, the recipe has been honed and refined, and the latest-generation car is one of the best in the business, despite also being one of the most challenging to look at. But for the M3 as we know it, time is running out. Emissions legislation, a crusade against speed and rising fuel costs all count against it, and it seems inevitable that it will soon vanish for good. Yet it seems BMW is not content to let its superstar go without making an emphatic statement, so for the first time in the model’s history, the company has launched an M3 estate. As BMW aficionados will doubtless be keen to point out, this isn’t the first M3 Touring to be built – there was a one-off prototype back in 2000, although that car never made it into production and BMW didn’t even admit it existed until 2016. Now, the car languishes in an underground car park in Munich, wheeled out only for high days and holidays. Building an M3 Touring, then, is something of a poisoned chalice for BMW. Fans have been demanding one for years, but the company is trying to stay true to the roots it has laid down with previous versions of the M3. Which means the M3 recipe has changed very little. As with the four-door M3 Competition Saloon, the estate gets a big engine at the front, some sportier styling on the outside and a more performance-orientated cabin inside. The only real difference is that this time, instead of applying all this to the 3 Series Saloon your accountant drives, it’s fitted to the five-door 3 Series Touring driven by your double-glazing salesperson. Viewed from the front, the new M3 Competition xDrive Touring (to give it its full name) looks nigh-on identical to the M3 Saloon, with the roof rails proving the only real giveaway. It has the same huge front grille, the same flared wheel arches and the same four exhaust pipes poking from the rear bumper. It even has the same rear spoiler, albeit crudely tacked onto the 3 Series Touring’s existing spoiler.

74

The interior is much the same, too, with an identical dashboard design that includes BMW’s advanced Curved Display infotainment system. That sees the digital instrument cluster and touchscreen navigation system housed in the same wide, curved screen that covers roughly half the width of the dashboard. Looking and feeling more modern than the system previously fitted to BMW 3 Series models, it’s an improvement in every way. Except one. With the arrival of the sharper, faster new screen, BMW has seized the opportunity to save a few euros by removing the climate control switchgear. Instead, the controls are housed in the touchscreen, which obliges you to look at them while performing simple acts such as adjusting the temperature. It’s far from the worst touch-sensitive climate control system we’ve encountered, but it’s still unnecessarily distracting. If you’ve ever come across We Want Plates on Twitter, we’re tempted to do something similar for in-car buttons. That small gripe aside, there’s no denying the quality of the M3 Touring’s cabin. Every button, every panel and every material is carefully considered and there’s a Germanic pedantry about the way it’s constructed. It makes Mount Everest look flimsy and insubstantial. And it makes F1 car cockpits look mundane and boring. While BMW has fallen into the trap of lashing carbon-fibre trim all over the show, it has fitted a sporty steering wheel, a skeletal gear selector and some fabulous gear shift paddles behind the steering wheel. In that oh-so German way, they have slightly different rubberised grips to tell you which is the ‘up’ paddle and which one is ‘down’. Our test car also came with the optional bucket seats, which look dramatic and are brilliant at holding you in place while you thrash the car down a country road. They even have a carbon-fibre nub between your legs to stop your knees cracking together during rapid changes of direction. But as clever as the seats might be, they’re also hideously uncomfortable on long-distance drives, and getting in and out of them is bordering on torture. Stick with the standard seats and your backside will thank you later.

BMW M3 Competition xDrive Touring Price: From £86,365 Gearbox: Eight-speed automatic Engine: 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six petrol 0-62mph: 3.6 seconds Top speed: 155mph Power: 503bhp

But don’t conflate an indictment of the climate control and the seats with a dismissal of the car itself, because the M3 Touring is one of the all-time great performance cars. The 3.0-litre straight-six engine snarls and snorts away to produce 503bhp, which heads to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Unlike the M3 Saloon, which drives the rear wheels unless you specify the optional xDrive all-wheeldrive system, the M3 Touring gets xDrive as standard, and that means it can put its power down more effectively. Where a standard M3 Competition Saloon gets from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds, the M3 Competition xDrive Touring takes 3.6 seconds.

76

Flat out, it’ll do 155mph, but for a small consideration, BMW will up that to 180mph. And the M3 Touring isn’t just fast in a straight line. Although it feels heavier than the Saloon, it still handles spectacularly well, with loads of grip and alert steering that allows it to change direction at the drop of a hat. The price you pay for that agility is a slightly firm low-speed ride that makes town centres a bit challenging, but it’s much smoother above 40mph, which makes it quite a relaxing longdistance cruiser. Of course, that’s also true of the M3 Saloon, which is undoubtedly a masterpiece. But what sets the M3 Touring apart is its bigger, more practical boot and more rear passenger space. True, the lighter M3 Saloon is slightly faster on a race track and it’s a few quid cheaper, but for 364 days of the year, the M3 Touring will be the one to have. It’s fantastic.

With his extensive experience in the industry, Ben has a keen understanding of what it takes to create buildings and spaces that are not only visually stunning but also functional and efficient. His ability to blend creativity with practicality has been instrumental in the success of the firm. The company’s range of services includes extensions, commercial buildings, remodelling and new builds, and has established a reputation for creating inspired spaces that add value to the lives of its occupants. The Raven Inn was purchased by the local community in April 2022, to protect the building and restore the property back into working order. The proposed development entails the erection of a two-storey rear extension, and although Draw Plan has incorporated some slightly modern applications to the rear extension, the development will be sympathetic and designed in a way to highlight the features of the existing building. Case Study

Design tha th a t Resp Res p ects T ime, Nature & Peop Peoplle Charlotte Findlater discusses the design process behind a beautifully located Lake District home

T

here’s a story to be told in every structure. We tell that story visually. The Charlotte Findlater design aesthetic blends architectural elements, curated furniture, art, and natural materials. Each building’s shape, size, proportions, culture and context are aligned with the client’s aspirations. And the results are transformative; projects finished to immaculate standards with the finest attention to detail. As an award-winning practice, we work collaboratively with forward-thinking clients who share our ethos, care about sustainability and appreciate outstanding design.

SPACES THAT INSPIRE, AROUSING EMOTION

All designers have a signature style and design principles, which sit at the heart of their work. Our obsession is the interplay between people, built environments and nature. Our ethos

centres on considered design that reconnects people with nature. Out of concern for the human experience, we transform spaces into true holistic ‘emotional universes’ for our clients.

INVENTIVE & CREATIVE

We offer a broad range of design services. They encompass architecture, interiors and landscape design. Schemes are high-end, bespoke and focused on craftsmanship. Pure and raw materials are used to create luxurious, natural, and sustainable spaces that boost wellbeing. Design is above all about human relationships and the creation of atmospheres and memories. We share our passion for design through the creation of places that convey emotions and enrich the human experience – always forging a symbiotic relationship between design and nature.

The Project: Historic House Ambleside Lake District

The brief was to fully renovate this historically important house. To include new roof, windows, heating systems, Smart Home tech, re-wire and extend

88

Homes and Interiors

in order to create a colourful dream home for our clients who were moving up from the South of England to enjoy a new life immersed in the Lake District. The property is surrounded by wonderful mature broadleaf trees and gardens. The new owners wanted to keep the period charm of the property, whilst also creating a modern home that suited their family and lifestyle. A turn-key design and renovation of this expansive and beautifully located Lake District Home included full space planning and all interior architectural details, as well as creating improved connectivity to the gardens. We fully furnished the home with a mix of highest quality custom made furniture & lighting as well as styling and artwork selections throughout The project includes a new garage block, renovation of an old Coach House, landscaping, a large garden room extension, locally sourced oak portico and an eco Shepherds Hut. The house had some wonderful architectural features and it was important that a sensitive approach was taken to preserve and restore where damaged these aspects. A timeless and sustainable focus was taken, each material considered for its eco credentials which included the paint from Edward Bulmer which contains no harmful VOC’s. The project was infused with the use of as many natural and locally sourced materials as possible which really grounds the property to its local and considers the carbon footprint of the project as a whole. Aligning with our biophilic approach, which is the theory that as humans we have an inherited an instinctive need to connect with nature. Bringing

natural elements into our homes really helps to reinforce this connection, boosting our mood and helping us to feel more grounded. We do not champion new trends. Rather, we seek to meet the needs and desires of individuals. And as defenders of slow design, we create natural, sustainable and transformational spaces with calming atmospheres. We faced a multitude of challenges along the way, including finding an ancient well hidden under two layers of flagstones, now made into a wonderful feature within the very glamorous laundry room. We also dealt with flooding of the property, a storm which brought down three trees onto part of the roof of this building and endless supply chain issues.

Client review:

“It’s a little over 14 months since we first met Charlotte and her team and in simple terms, over that time our house has been transformed with her inspiration, design knowledge and eye for detail into a home. Her ability to interpret our requirements on a physical and sensory level has been second to none and her continued determination to accept nothing less than the highest of standards has delivered a result beyond our imagination. Her passion for both design and sustainability resonated with us right from that first meeting. That passion has undoubtedly delivered a home that is full of welcoming spaces, and creates a sustainable legacy that we are very proud to be the custodians of for hopefully many years to come.” - Mr and Mrs Aitchson charlottefindlater.co.uk

“I love designing for people; it doesn’t matter what style I do. After completing the project, it is rewarding to see my clients enjoying their new living areas and spaces. I have a rich imagination and always see the many possibilities giving individuality and a wow factor to every space.”

5 Minutes with 5TH GENERATION MD AT CRAVEN DUNNILL, SIMON HOWELLS

Why did you choose this location for your new showroom? We chose this area, in the heart of Cheshire’s ‘Golden Triangle,’ for its discerning, design-led audience. Our new Showroom and Design Hub has been created as an aspirational space which fills a gap in this market, showcasing the breadth of design solutions that we bring to the market; with an unparalleled mix of products and services built up over 150 years in the industry. The site was perfect for our needs as it offered a large and open floorplan downstairs, flooded with natural light to best showcase the range of our award-winning portfolio across many different displays, whilst our Design Hub upstairs supports 1-to-1 consultations, technical presentations, and client meetings. Within the 5000 sqft of showspace, our objective was to create a one-stop destination for all inspirational design touchpoints that matter. How are you planning to engage with potential customers in your area? The showroom is for homeowners, interior designers, property developers, and our retail account customers alike – in just the same mould as we have successfully operated our flagship showroom in Shropshire for over 40 years. It is important to be clear, this is not part of a multi-retail strategy.

Quite conversely this showroom is being used by our key account customers as an extension of their spaces, to offer more display areas, and showcase products that they may not have room to display (such as large-format porcelain slabs), all supported by our trusted partnership referral scheme. We are a company that has, and always will, value close partnership, and support those that we work with in the industry. In your view, is there anything different about this showroom compared to others? The cutting-edge space offers customers the opportunity to surround themselves in style, presenting a premium selection of wall and floor tiles, bathroom furniture, kitchen work surfaces, swimming pool solutions, and handcrafted three-dimensional ceramics. We represent quality, and as ever, our products are sourced from the world’s leading manufacturers, from the finest Italian ceramics to handcrafted British artworks, such as our Artisan Collection. Furthermore, raising the bar for the industry, our state-of-the-art Infinito Collection of large porcelain slabs is also presented for the very first time. This forms a central feature of the design scheme and offers innovative and implementable solutions for the use of these supersized, showstopping materials. The Infinito Collection also features award-winning design technologies Hypertouch and 4D Ceramic through a partnership with Iris Ceramica Group. Hypertouch is a

state-of-the-art home automation system using integrated sensors hidden behind a ceramic surface, activated simply by touch; and 4D Ceramics represents the perfect balance between aesthetics and technical performance, incorporating green hydrogen into the production process for the very first time. As the very first showroom in the UK to display both pioneering technologies, the environment will allow visitors the opportunity to experience these first-hand, in a space with limitless surface solutions. Why should kitchen and bathrooms designers consider Craven Dunnill offerings for their projects? As a business, we strive to push the boundaries and perceptions of how ceramic and porcelain can be used both around the home and in commercial spaces. We are internationally recognised as a reputable and trusted name in the industry, offering unrivalled service, quality products, and market-leading technical knowledge – holding over 10,000 product lines in stock here in the UK. We have 150 years of successfully supplying for commercial and residential projects, supported by our own fleet of delivery vehicles and an exceptional in-house logistics team. We are specialists like no other, and incredibly passionate about what we do. cravendunnill.co.uk

And Finally ...

Perfect for at-home runner, Bigfoot Athens is designed especially for fitness, thanks to its folding treadmill that disappears once the physical activity is over, going from a floor space of 160x70 cm to zero in a gesture. Integratable into the wall when designing and renovating the building, adjacent to an existing wall or freestanding and self-supporting, Bigfoot is available in two versions: Architectural, for cladding in plasterboard sheets or similar, and Interior, with provision for panelling or rigid panels. Fully customisable according to specific needs, both versions do not require a building permit, speeding up and simplifying installation. protek-controtelai.com
