My life ... FREEDOM DORAN , FOUNDER/CEO OF 22 IMPACT + NETHRIAL

How would you describe yourself ? I would describe myself as someone who has a high work ethic and drive as well as a need for organisation in everything that I do. I can be quite blunt at times. Asides from work I would like to think I am kind and passionate about everything that I do. Where is home? And work? I live in Formby, Liverpool most of the time and work is wherever I am at the time as I am fortunate enough to just need my laptop and phone to work so it’s spent between Cheshire, Liverpool, Manchester and London for the most part. What did you want to be when you were younger? I wanted to be an actor when I was younger and tried it out doing a couple of adverts and TV shows and really enjoyed it actually. What do you love most about the industry you are in? I absolutely love the people behind the brands that we work with in both companies, I’m such a social person so being able to work with incredible people in all sorts of businesses and develop those relationships outside of work as well. Name a few of your favourite places to be... I absolutely love going to Mallorca for the summer it’s one of my favourite places in the world. Being anywhere with my close friends is the best place as we are a super close group and always have the best time wherever we are even if it’s just down the road.

“I absolutely love the people behind the brands that we work with in both companies” What or who inspires you? One of my biggest inspirations is Umar Kamani he owns PLT and I look up to a lot of the things he does and how he has managed to scale is amazing. Alongside him, I look up to all of my friends that own businesses. We all support each other and it’s great to see everyone thriving. What was the last gift you gave someone? I gave an Apple Watch to my friend for her birthday with a few different coloured bands she loved it. Tell us a secret/fun fact? I went to fashion week for the first time when I was 14! No idea how my mum didn’t have a panic attack looking back! Who or what would you place in Room 101? Slow drivers not driving in the slow lane on the motorway. It grinds my gears because it causes all the traffic to be pushed over and resulting in a mini-traffic jam. What’s been your biggest life lesson? I have had a few but my most recent was when my house had a gas leak during the night. Thankfully, I was ok but it was just another reminder that our lives can be taken at any moment and to make new memories and to push even harder for things I want in life. www.freedomdoran.com

Get WILD this Summe ummerr Craig Hough took a fun-filled family trip to the new outdoor play adventure, set in 70 acres of Cheshire woodland

S

chool is officially out for the summer, meaning parents, grandparents and guardians are looking for new, fun-filled activities to keep their little ones entertained. Well, look no further. BeWILDERwood, who opened their first outdoor play area in Norfolk have now brought all the fun to the North West. It’s the perfect place to get your offspring out of the house and into the great outdoors.

loves

BACKGROUND It was a sunny Saturday afternoon as I joined my cousin, little Theo and his friend Indy (both aged 6) for a family day out. The excitement levels from the kids was infectious as we made the short drive from Chester through the picturesque Cheshire countryside to find BeWILDerwood, located in Bickley Moss, Whitchurch. This magical woodland, outdoor adventure is based on the enchanting books by author and creator Tom Blofeld, which are readily available in the gift shop at the end of your

adventure. Set in 70 acres of wild Cheshire woodland, there is plenty of activities to keep families entertained all day long.

SLIPPERY SLOPES We started our adventure at the Slippery Slopes where the large slides caught the eyes of the group. As chief bag watcher, I watched on as the group climbed upward, as other families were swooshing down the slides beside me. The kids came down, laughing and smiling as my cousin came tumbling down with them… and kept rolling. Everyone loved it so much they were quick to run back to the top for another go.

GET CREATIVE The day continued as the children braved the Broken Bridge – a rope bridge high in the tree-tops before heading to The Big Hat (open from 11am-4pm) to use their creative skills. This was a welcome break for us adults, as the enthusiastic team at BeWILDerwood gave each 14

of us a paper crown and a tub of items to decorate with. Crowns on, we headed to Telescope Tower where we climbed to the top of the tower to look through a telescope down at the amazing view across Cheshire.

The Thornyclod Spider were brought to life using puppets. Great fun.

MUNCH BAR

WOBBLY WIRES

It was up in the tower we heard tummies rumbling, so we headed across the park to grab some food. There is a great range of hot and cold food and drinks available. Nearly all BeWILDerwood’s food comes from carefully chosen and certified local farmers, as they are committed to keeping food miles to a minimum. The kids naturally opted for hot dogs, whilst us grown-ups refuelled on a baked potato (with plenty of fillings). Re-energised the kids ran across the park, tackled the balance beams and enjoyed the swings. Thankfully their lunch did not make a re-appearance.

A highlight for both boys were the wobbly wires. There were 6 zip wires on offer (for humans 105cm and over) and both Theo and Indy roared with laughter as they glided through the air.

STORY TIME

CONCLUSION It’s time to put the tablet down and get lost in a wonky world of treehouses, super slides, giant swings and extra-long zip wires. There is so much to enjoy in a day at BeWILDerwood – for both adults and little ones. It’s a full-on, fun day out for the whole family. And the added bonus? The kids slept all the way home. www.cheshire.bewilderwood.co.uk

Next stop was the Storytelling Stage where we sat and watched as a member of the BeWILDerwood team read ‘A Boggle At Bewilderwood’. Shows are on at select times of the day, so be sure to check timings and arrive early to get a good seat. The kids loved this and joined along with the audience participation. Characters including Mildred the Crocklebog (everyone’s favourite vegetarian, tiara wearing Crocklebog), Vera the Hippopotamuddle and 15

Ever very ybo bod d y’s Talkiing Abo Talk bou ut

JA M I E

The Cheshire Magazine talks to Layton Williams and Shane Richie who are set to star in the UK tour of the award winning musical everyone is talking about

LAYTON WILLIAMS (JAMIE NEW) For people who are new to Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, how would you sum up the storyline? Jamie is based on a real character who was the subject of a documentary on BBC Three. I remember watching it years ago and it was about him wanting to be a drag queen and wanting go to the school prom in a dress and how his mum Margaret supported him. When he got there there was all this hoo-hah, the teachers wouldn’t let him in, then something wonderful and unexpected happened, his school mates refused to go in without him. The basics of his story inspired the musical and it’s been given a bit of theatrical razzamatazz. Our story is about a 16-year-old boy who wants to be a drag queen and it’s about his relationship with his parents - including his dad, who he isn’t much in touch with. It’s about Jamie finding himself and his drag persona and, without giving anything away, what happens when he does eventually go to the prom. What do you see as the key themes? It’s about acceptance. This is a show for everyone, especially for today. It’s not just for people who are into RuPaul’s Drag Race and stuff like that. The show is about a boy finding his path in life with the help of his close relationship with his incredible mum 20

Dean character and think ‘That was me’ or they might see the dad and think ‘I was homophobic’ or they’ll go ‘Everybody is celebrating this boy here so why do I have these negative feelings?’ They might get dragged to the theatre by their girlfriends or wives, thinking ‘Oh my God, what have I gotten myself into?’ then hopefully by the end of it their hearts and minds will have been opened and their opinions on things have changed. and her unconditional love for him. She loves him exactly as he is. A dad who isn’t supportive and lots of other characters that people will be able to relate to. It’s about family, friendship, trust and support. There are so many different, relatable characters in it - [laughs] although if you identify with the dad then have a word with yourself! And there’s so much diversity in the cast. The real Jamie is white and I’m not, but that wasn’t even a question for the producers and creatives - which is so refreshing and so fab, like just ‘He’s right for the role’ and that’s how it should be. Oh, and there are high heels, high kicks, drag queens, beautiful dresses, feather boas, some fantastic songs and brilliant dancing. It really is fun, funny and fabulous with a lump in your throat and a little tear. How important is the theme of inclusion to audiences both young and old? Very important. I get messages from older people who have been helped by the show, whether it’s helped them come out or helped them understand their children better. It does obviously speak directly to the LGBTQ+ youth but it’s not limited to one faction. So many people can relate to being an outcast or feeling different but after seeing the show they’ll feel, to quote one of the songs, there’s a place where they belong. It didn’t happen to me personally but our director [Jonathan Butterell] said when he was doing the show in Sheffield a guy came up to him, grabbed his arm and said ‘I was Dean once’ - referring to the school bully character. Some people in the audience will maybe see the

What challenges does the role of Jamie present? It’s about the emotional journey he has to go on. Eight times a week I’m having an argument with this person, bonding with that one, having to cry about this, having to cry about that… The rollercoaster of emotions is a lot to navigate. Being 16 years old is hard. I remember being 16 with all those hormones and stuff. There’s the acting side of all that, then there are so many songs. I have to keep my voice tight and right. That’s the difficulty - keeping myself on top form all the time so when I get out on stage I slay it. I want people to have the best experience possible and that means I have to be in full health, make sure I’m rested and always prepared. That’s the nature of the job but that’s what makes it exciting because you put your whole self out there on stage. Do you know the real Jamie and have you based your performance on him? Yes, I know Jamie Campbell, he’s a really lovely guy. I rewatched the documentary once I got the part. There a few things he does, like a few little dance moves, that I’ve put into the show. And with him as a person, I take some of his isms and personality traits. On the surface he might come across as someone who is really confident and fab and out-there, but as with lots of people you don’t really know what’s going on behind closed 21

doors. There’s so much vulnerability to him. That’s something I don’t necessarily have myself. I’m always getting notes from the director about tapping into Jamie’s vulnerability. I try to stay as true to him and his story as I can because I want to do it justice. I want everyone who comes to see the show to not just get this fierce, fully-formed teenager who’s got everything sorted because then it’d be like ‘So what’s this story about?’ If I came out in the opening number And You Don’t Even Know It like ‘Bam! I’ve got this!’ then the audience would just go ‘He seems fine, what’s the point of the story?’ Does the show resonate for you on a personal level? Yes it does. I’m a queer boy from a council estate up North, so we have that in common. Me and my mum have had our moments in the past and sometimes on stage I’m thinking about the things we’ve been through. We always patch things up but families go through stuff. And my upbringing wasn’t rosy. As I say, I was a gay boy on a council estate and as much as I tried to hide it I had a few things coming my way. It’s not been the easiest ride but I put it into my art. What’s your favourite musical number in the show? And You Don’t Even Know It is fab because it’s the opening number and I get to sing and dance and do it all. Then I love the closing number Out Of The Darkness because I have my microphone in my hand and I feel like a real popstar. The tour calls at The Lowry, Salford. Does it have any significance for you? It’s the closest venue on the tour to my hometown, which is Bury in Manchester, so I’m excited that all my family will be coming to see me. 22

SHANE RICHIE (HUGO/LOCO CHANELLE) You first played Hugo/Loco Channelle in 2019 and have recently returned to the role for the reopening of the show in the West End before the UK & Ireland tour. What first hooked you in about the role? I’d just come out of EastEnders and I was kind of happy just to have a break because I knew I was going to be busy from April/May onwards, but then Nica [Burns, the show’s producer] got in touch with my Manager and asked ‘We’d love to speak to you and Shane about the possibility of him joining the cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, there’s a part he’s perfect for.’ I’d heard a couple of tracks from it and I really liked them – but when you’re in EastEnders you’re in a bit of a bubble so I hadn’t had the time to go. So I went to see it with Phil Dale [Shane’s manager] and was like ‘Oh my God, I just love this show!’ They said ‘We’d like you to play a Sheffield drag queen’ and because it was so different to the next character I was lined up to play on stage [Archie Rice in The Entertainer] I thought ‘I need to do this’. I was in panto at the time so I didn’t get as much rehearsal time as I thought I would. It was seven weeks, then ‘Bam!’ me and Layton both started at the same time. How has the past year been for you with theatres being closed? When the Jamie tour got cancelled I thought it would only be for a few weeks but then we got to realise how serious it was. There was no light at the

end of the tunnel, although I always knew I was going into the castle for I’m A Celebrity so I had that to look forward to. Before I went into I’m A Celebrity I was asked to go back into the West End production in January so when I was in the castle I was thinking ‘I need to lose a bit of weight so I can fit back into the dress’, knowing full well there was going to be no panto. Then two days before I was due to go into rehearsal the show had to be pulled. So it must have been great to finally return to Jamie in the West End this May? [Laughs] It was fantastic but I struggled at first because my calves didn’t have muscle memory. When I put the heels back on I thought I’d only need a day to get used to them again, although the producer said ‘Shane, you might want to practice’. I was like ‘Shut up’ but then I put them on at home one day and I was a wreck. I couldn’t walk in them. People say it’s like riding a bike but once you’ve not worn heels for a long time it’s so hard. The first couple of shows I had a few little stumbles but now I’m twirling again and I know what I’m doing.

it, but there’s a whole generation who would only have seen me as Alfie Moon. There’d be these young girls whose mums wanted to come see the show because they’re going ‘What, Alfie’s playing a drag queen? I’ll come see that with you, darling’. At the stage door there weren’t just boys and girls and teenagers, they were there with their parents. If I can bring another generation to come see Jamie - the 40-plus-year-olds who wouldn’t normally come see a show like this - and then they love it, then I’m happy How important do you think that message is in this day and age? It’s so relevant. We’re in a country where there are so many social, political and cultural changes going on and people are being divided. We’re getting angry with each other, there’s the Far Left and the Far Right, then here’s a show that goes ‘Be who you wanna be, let others be who they want to be and celebrate diversity’. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie which will be starting at The Lowry from 1st September, www.thelowry.com

How did you prepare to play Hugo’s drag queen alter ego Loco Chanelle? Did it take long for you to master the high heels? I had a nightmare. With my left calf muscle, even when I just talk about putting on the heels I can feel it twingeing. It’s one thing standing in five-inch heels, it’s another thing to walk in them and another thing entirely to dance in them. Layton and the other drag queens in the show helped me and I’d do the school run, then come home, put the heels on and walk around the kitchen. My wife was like ‘Seriously, if the Tesco delivery man comes you’re not answering the door in high heels!’ but I walked everywhere in them. What kind of feedback did you get from fans about your performance? Those who have followed my career for years loved 23

5 N° of Celebrity 100 Years

The Cheshire Magazine talks to Olivier Polge, In-House Perfumer-Creator at CHANEL to look back on 100 years of the brand and its relationship with celebrity

I

n 1921, N°5 came into the world. It was the first fragrance created by visionary fashion designer Gabrielle Chanel, who was also the first designer to launch a fragrance under her own name. Her intention was to liberate femininity from its olfactory constraints in the same way that she used her creations to free minds and assert a new style. During this era, the fragrances on the market generally limited women to the scent of a single flower, such as lily of the valley, violet, or jasmine. Breaking with the traditions of its time, the abstract scent trail of N°5 is a reflection of Gabrielle Chanel’s personality. Her mirror image, in fragrance form. With N°5, Ernest Beaux designed an avant-garde composition, combining the finest natural ingredients with synthetic molecules called aldehydes, which were still new at the time, in unprecedented proportions to exalt the notes of the fragrance. N°5 eludes

24

comparison to other fragrances and does not conform to any rules. Thanks to its radical character, it became the tipping point that ushered in the modern era of perfume and changed its history. N°5 is a pioneering fragrance, a revolution.

PRESERVING N°5, FROM ONE PERFUMER TO THE NEXT... The three perfumers who succeeded Ernest Beaux all inherited a common duty: to protect the House’s iconic fragrance. Like a torch, the secret formula of N°5 has been passed down to Henri Robert, Jacques Polge and now Olivier Polge. “Preserving N°5 requires my constant attention,” attests Olivier Polge, In-House Perfumer-Creator since 2015. It is his responsibility to oversee the sourcing of the raw materials that go into the iconic fragrance and ensure that their quality is maintained. His year is thus organized around the harvest calendar of the ingredients used to compose N°5, among which include jasmine and May rose from Grasse. From the harvest to the extraction methods, Olivier Polge carries out each step of this painstaking process, which forms an integral part of his daily work, in partnership with CHANEL’s Laboratory of

Fragrance Creation and Development. This ensures that the production of N°5 remains exceptional year after year.

... AND REINVENTING IT Since its creation in 1921, N°5 has been to CHANEL what grammar is to language, determining the style of all other CHANEL fragrances. A manifesto that declares the absolute freedom of both creator and creation, which remains the driving force and the soul of the House. N°5 is thus an endless source of inspiration. With the exception of Henri Robert, the House’s successive perfumers have each brought one of the numerous facets of N°5 to light through various reinterpretations, an exercise in style. Today, there exist five different interpretations, including the original Parfum. N°5 PARFUM (1921) Composed in 1921, the Parfum is the most precious of the interpretations. “The starting point was a very rich floral fragrance, which was completely novel at the time,” Olivier Polge shares. Knowing that Gabrielle Chanel wanted her fragrance to be “inimitable”, perfumer Ernest Beaux incorporated the most luxurious ingredients at his disposal into the formula: flowers grown in Grasse. Its composition, of the utmost opulence, contrasts radically with the minimalist design of the bottle.

“N°5 eludes comparison to other fragrances and does not conform to any rules” The powerful scent trail of N°5 Parfum represented a clean break from the single-note fragrances that were prevalent during this era: its intense floral bouquet contains a particular blend of May rose and jasmine from Grasse. Its formula, which is also characterised by the unprecedented use of aldehydes, propelled perfumery into the modern era. As CHANEL’s début fragrance, N°5 Parfum defined the House’s olfactive style and set the standard for its tradition of excellence and expertise in perfumery, from flower to bottle.

N°5 EAU DE TOILETTE (1924) Three years after composing the Parfum, Ernest Beaux created the first variation of N°5. “The highly precious nature of the Parfum quickly justified the need for a lighter eau de toilette version that stayed true to the spirit of the original,” explains Olivier Polge. Woodier than the original fragrance, the eau de toilette is distinguished by its dry, lively nuances of vetiver, which are offset by the deep scent of sandalwood. These two woody notes support the floral bouquet of jasmine, rose and ylang-ylang and are enhanced by the notorious aldehydes that are unique to N°5. The Eau de Toilette also leaves behind a scent trail that is less heady than that of the Parfum. As the first reinterpretation of the original fragrance composition, it introduced a new way to experience fragrance, in a spray that allowed for a generous, wide-sweeping application.

N°5 EAU DE PARFUM (1986) Observing how fragrance trends were evolving, Jacques Polge created a third interpretation of N°5 in 1986. The Eau de Parfum offered a new 25

concentration that revived the sensuality of Ernest Beaux’s original fragrance while also keeping up with the times. “His intention was to preserve as much of the Parfum’s richness as possible, both from an olfactory perspective and in terms of the fragrance’s amber colour,” explains Olivier Polge. In this composition, the floral-aldehydic bouquet is lavish and opulent, with a rich quality that extends to its dense, enveloping and long-lasting scent trail. A note of vanilla lends the fragrance its distinct oriental signature.

N°5 EAU PREMIÈRE (2008) In 2008, Jacques Polge released a fourth version of N°5, one that was airy and luminous. The perfumer tried to imagine how N°5 would have smelled if Ernest Beaux had had access to a range of contemporary raw materials at the time of its creation. To reinterpret the signature of the original fragrance, he used white musks, which were

omnipresent in the fragrances of the 2000s, as well as aldehydes developed by CHANEL from citrus essences. Products of modern technology, these aldehydes envelop the iconic floral bouquet of rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang. Enlivened with a touch of vanilla, “the scent trail of the Eau Première reveals another texture, closer to the skin, that remains very similar to N°5,” Olivier Polge reflects.

N°5 L’EAU (2016) In 2016, Olivier Polge created a new variation, guided by a desire for freshness. “I wanted to play with the limits of its identity,” the perfumer reveals. “Take the image that N°5 conveys and turn it on its head, make it more fluid. More transparent, in the best sense of the word.” To this end, he based his composition around cedarwood, which underscores a textured scent trail that is less enveloping than the other interpretations. A fresh, floral eau de toilette, N°5 L’EAU opens with a citrus accord — lemon, mandarin and orange — that the aldehydes elevate to its highest potential. Rose and jasmine meld with a new, fractionated note of ylang-ylang. N°5 L’EAU is perhaps the variation that differs most from the others. However, the notes used by Olivier Polge are the same. This illustrates the idea that in perfumery, everything is a matter of proportion, just as every melody ever created was formed from a mere 12 musical notes.

AN ICON OF FEMININITY In 1937, at the height of her notoriety, Gabrielle Chanel became the first woman to be the face of her own fragrance, N°5. Leaning up against a fireplace in a suite at the Ritz, she posed in front of François Kollar’s camera for an advertisement that appeared in Harper’s Bazaar. In 1952, Marilyn Monroe revealed that she wore nothing but “a few drops of N°5” to bed. This confession, which she later discussed in a 1960 interview for Marie Claire, consecrated the legend. N°5 has since established itself as an absolute icon. 26

“Throughout the decades, N°5 has been represented by some of the greatest actresses of their time” In the 1960s, Jacques Helleu, Artistic Director for CHANEL Fragrances up until 2007, initiated the era of brand ambassadors. He chose some of the most gorgeous women in the world and called upon the biggest names in photography and film to capture their beauty for advertising campaigns that would go down in history. Throughout the decades, N°5 has been represented by some of the greatest actresses of their time, including Ali MacGraw, Lauren Hutton, Catherine Deneuve, Carole Bouquet and Nicole Kidman. One by one, they posed for famous photographers such as Richard Avedon, Patrick Demarchelier, and Dominique Issermann, and filmed under the guidance of renowned directors like Helmut Newton, Ridley Scott and Baz Luhrmann. Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, Head of Global Creative Resources Fragrance and Beauty Division for CHANEL, and Fine Jewelry and Watches Division since 2013, continues to carry on the legend of N°5. By choosing actress Marion Cotillard and director Johan Renck in 2020, he asserts its absolute modernity once more and further perpetuates the fantasy of this legendary fragrance.

THE LUXURY OF SIMPLICITY With N°5, Gabrielle Chanel created an abstract fragrance that changed the history of perfumery, a welcome shock to the senses that was impossible to associate with any particular flower. As for its presentation, Chanel designed a minimalist bottle that allowed the amber colour of the fragrance to take centre stage. The flat shape, similar to that of a hip flask, was designed for movement and speed, for a pocket or travel kit. For

the first time, the stopper featured the interlocking double C logo. The label’s radical simplicity was consistent with the spirit of the times. Gabrielle Chanel said, “Always remove, never add.” Throughout the decades, the understated, elegant design of N°5 has remained mostly unchanged. In 1921, the choice was made to construct the bottle from thin glass. In 1924, the bottle was redesigned with bevelled edges in order to reinforce its angles. The changes that followed were mostly of an aesthetic nature and reflected the desire to maintain the modern, yet timeless look of the iconic fragrance. In 1970, the year that the CHANEL typeface was created and formalized, the label design and logo that we know today appeared on the bottle for the first time, still featuring the House’s signature black and white colours. During this same year, the bottle was crowned with a thicker, more imposing stopper in order to stay current with the trends of the time. In 2012, the Packaging Creation Studio chose to refine the label and update its design. It is now smaller and gives greater visual prominence to the N°5 trademark associated with CHANEL. N°5 is also highly regarded in the art world. In 1959, the N°5 box was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Then, in the 1980s, painter Andy Warhol dedicated a series of nine screen prints to the fragrance, cementing its status as a pop culture icon. The three fundamentals of N°5 — its revolutionary scent, the excellence of its raw materials, and its radical packaging — are to CHANEL what grammar is to language, determining the style of all other CHANEL fragrances. www.chanel.com 27

M ATILDE Jewellery The founder of MATILDE Jewellery and daughter of footballing manager José Mourinho discusses her journey in creating the brand

F

rom buying pre-loved and vintage, to actively seeking brands with sustainability at their core, more of us than ever are changing the way we shop to help protect the planet we share. Now, inspiring change in an industry that has a devastating impact on some of the planet’s most fragile ecosystems and communities is MATILDE, the eponymous new sustainable fine jewellery brand by Matilde Faria Mourinho Felix, daughter of head coach of Roma, José Mourinho. At the heart of MATILDE is the belief that producing and buying fine jewellery shouldn’t have to cost the earth - or be out of reach for those who want to make a statement about their values with the accessories that they choose to wear. Using only Recycled Gold and Lab-Grown Diamonds, eco-friendly packaging, and transparent processes, MATILDE cuts out intermediaries to keep the pieces as sustainable, and accessible as they possibly can be. Where does your passion for jewellery come from? I have always had a passion for jewellery,

30

and I think that stems from the fact that personally any piece of jewellery that I own means something to me. Whether it reminds me of a time in my life, a person, or a place, I love the power that a piece of jewellery holds in that sense. The more I started learning about the jewellery industry, the more I realised how little I knew about where my pieces came from. And the more aware of the environmental and social harms the mining industry continuously causes, the harder it was for me to turn a blind eye. This was one of the main reasons why I created MATILDE.

not a trained technical jewellery designer, I am lucky enough to work with an amazing designer who is able to put my ideas onto paper better than I can. So, it really is a collaborative effort. How is each piece made and distributed to your customers? Every piece is made using 100% 14k recycled gold and exclusively lab-grown diamonds. Once produced, the pieces come directly to us and we then distribute them directly to our customers via our website. How did you develop MATILDE Jewellery? I have a background in fashion, as I did my BA at London College of Fashion in Creative Direction for Fashion, and this course gave me a set of very interchangeable skills that were able to be adapted into the jewellery industry. On top of that and my experience in working within different sectors of the industry, I did my master’s degree at Conde Nast College of Fashion and Design and this really focused my education on the entrepreneurial side of the jewellery industry. From there, I developed a business and financial plan for MATILDE Jewellery that allowed me to bring it to life. What does a typical day look like? I don’t think there is a typical day! Some days I am out having meetings, at photoshoots, doing press days, and others I am glued to my laptop. But usually, I always start my days by checking my emails and catching up on anything that is needed, and then on the brand’s social channels. During lockdown my days also entailed a lot of Zoom meetings. Aside from that it really varies on the time of the year or the week, which I love that no day is ever the same.

How would you describe your customer? I would describe our customers as modern yet timeless. They prioritise investing in timeless pieces as opposed to trend-led styles and have sustainability at the core of their values. It’s important to them that the brands they follow and support are as transparent as possible with everything they do, and communicate with them clearly. Other than your own designs, do you have any pieces of jewellery you’re rarely found without? Yes! I have certain pieces that I have inherited from my mother, which I value so much. I also have some pieces that I received from my family years and years ago as gifts and I wear them every single day. Every piece of jewellery that I own I relate to a time in my life, a person, a place, which is what I love so much about jewellery that they can hold so much in something so small and delicate. www.matildejewellery.com

What was the process of designing your collection? It depends. Some pieces I have a really clear vision of what I want to achieve, so it’s quite easy and quick to put it down on paper. But because I am 31

Show me the New Mulberry Collection Introducing Mulberry x Alexa Chung, a New Design Collaboration

M

ulberry’s 50th anniversary celebrations continue as the brand unveils an exciting new design collaboration with a long-time friend of the house and the woman who inspired one of its most iconic bags: Alexa Chung. Launching globally on 12th July, Mulberry x Alexa Chung is the latest chapter in Mulberry Editions. Amplifying its legacy of bold collaborations, Mulberry Editions is a series of limited edition capsules in which leading creatives have been invited to put their own spin on the house’s design DNA. Fortifying her close relationship with Mulberry, this is Chung’s design debut for the house. ‘I thought it was a great, quite rare opportunity,’ she says. ‘I never expected to be invited to actually design my own Mulberry bag, which is really a dream come true’. The capsule stars two styles – a roomy shoulder bag, the Big Guy, and a compact clutch, the Little Guy. Both have a go-everywhere, wear-as-you-wish spirit. The effortless, sleek style of ‘70s style icons, like Charlotte Rampling and Lauren Hutton, inform the pared-back aesthetic. Both bags draw on the key components of Chung’s personal style: masculine formality offset with a vintage romance and a deep appreciation for British design. In a nod to their shared history, she also took inspiration from the 2010 Alexa. One of the most covetable bags of a generation, the Alexa went on to win over new fans around the globe when it was relaunched in 2020. Taking their cue from vintage satchels as well as the Elkington briefcase that inspired the original Alexa, the Big Guy and Little Guy feature chain straps and a boxy, streamlined silhouette. The colour palette

ranges from classic, earthy shades (Black, Dark Chocolate, Tan) to peppy, optimistic tones (Apple Green, Denim Blue). Materials include glossy crocodile-effect patent leather, sumptuous velvet and suede. Launching alongside the line-up is an edit of complementary Alexa bags, which are released in the same colour palette. “Mulberry has always been a brand that’s very close to my heart. The Alexa represents a moment in my life that I’m extraordinarily proud of and feel really lucky to have experienced. It’s nostalgic and sentimental and sweet and joyful. This time, I wanted to create something that straddled what the bag means to me personally, but could become that for someone else’s wardrobe. I wanted to make sure that it would endure, become a future classic. I welcome this extension of a relationship that’s been unfolding over decades. We do all like an origin story and something authentic, and I suppose it doesn’t get more authentic than this. In my mind it’s been quite a romantic journey”. — Alexa Chung. “Alexa has been an important part of Mulberry’s history, and it’s an honour to welcome her to the house for this highly personal design collaboration during our 50th anniversary. Since Alexa first caught our eye with her unexpected, confident approach to style, she has also shown herself to be an equally exciting and talented designer who shares our appreciation for bold British design. This creative partnership is a natural evolution of our relationship. I am delighted to see her unique interpretation of the house codes in this capsule, which is a wonderful extension of the original Alexa family”. — Thierry Andretta, Mulberry CEO.

EXPERT SHARON HILDITCH MBE, FOUNDER OF CRYSTAL CLEAR SKINCARE LOOKS AT THE IMPORTANCE OF USING SUNSCREEN THIS SUMMER

Did you know 80% of visible ageing is caused by the sun! It’s pointless using products or treatments to help reverse the damage such as hyperpigmentation, accelerated ageing and potential skin cancers, unless you are actually addressing the cause. It was Hollywood that first brought and sold the virtues of having a golden tan and along with the trend brought an increase in the amount of skin cancers being diagnosed, with skin cancer now being at an all time high. Whilst lying in the sun may give us that feel-good factor, as serotonin is produced in much greater quantities when we lie in the sun, it is vital to remember the risks associated and damage caused by UV rays, such as premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles and skin cancers. We also need to remember is that it isn’t just lazing on a beach that creates that damage causing visible ageing, but also prolonged UVA exposure which happens on a cloudy day or even through your car windows, with up to 95% of rays that hit the skin surface being UVA, which is why it’s so important to use a high quality sunscreen every day. Crystal Clear’s Protect & Repair miracle moisturiser contains highly efficient sunscreens and offers both UVA 20 and UVB 40 SPF protection. It also comprises anti-ageing actives to not only protect, but also to hydrate the skin. Vitamin E offers excellent antioxidant properties while Lupine Extract and Thermus Thermophilis help prevent sunburn, dehydration and ageing, and its photostability offers long-lasting skin protection. For those wanting to cheat their way to the perfect tan, our Crystal Clear Beach Glow tan drops do just that. From a beautiful golden glow to a deeper shade of tan, the choice is entirely yours, simply mix 1, 2 or 3 drops with your normal moisturiser or night cream. Our face and body tanning drops stimulate the melanin synthesis in the skin to promote a longer lasting colour tone, and we’ve also added coconut oil to ensure the skin is kept beautifully soft and supple. Using both of these products simultaneously will leave skin protected against sun damage whilst providing that perfect sun-kissed glow. www.crystalclear.co.uk

In her debut column, health and fitness expert Clare Stobart looks at the 21/90 rule to make a permanent change in habit, which will improve your overall wellbeing and ensure you stay healthy this summer and beyond

10

Mor n i ng Habi ts to Kick Start Your Day

We all have such busy lifestyles but implementing the following 10 habits into your morning routine for the next 21 days, will have such a positive impact on your wellness and fitness journey. After 90 days, these will become habit, just try it.

Wake Up Early

You will find that most successful people wake up early, allowing time to heighten their focus on the things that really matter to them. Going for

Gold Ellesmere College: The Local School with Global Ambitions WORDS: RACHEL REDSHAW

T

here is a well-known saying, ‘Sport is a contest fought on the battleground of the body, the mind and the heart,’ and here at Ellesmere we know through experience and hard work, it also delivers personal growth on the playing fields and supports academic achievement in the classroom. Studies have shown the benefit of sport in all aspects of a student’s journey through the school and beyond and how it teaches vital self-knowledge and lessons which endure a lifetime. From beginners to elite athletes, each student brings their own level of ambition, dedication and passion – and combined with our own world class coaching and training facilities it provides the ideal platform to allow

52

them to achieve their own sporting and academic success. Achievement, self-awareness, friendship, fun and self-confidence are some of the other benefits of our well-managed and varied games programme. These long-term goals are at the forefront of our coaching philosophy and not the short term selfgratification of a win at all costs attitude. We also believe that there shouldn’t have to be a compromise made between academic success or sporting success – our students can have both – and we have a proven track record to support this. Because we are an independent school we have the flexibility, capability and the resources to be able to construct the curriculum timetable to meet the needs of the student athletes challenging training and competing schedules alongside their school work – balance is always the key.

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Family

A Successful Philosophy The track to success always begins with a philosophy, and our philosophy – to be the best you can be - is supported by a vision, a talented and dedicated coaching team, world class facilities and an individual’s own passion and determination for their success. These combined allow our students to train and succeed at every Olympic discipline through one of our Academy programmes – or just enjoy sport at any level they wish to play! One of the keys to our success is the high level of coaching we have at the college – for a small school we aim high! Many of our Academy coaches have had international or Olympic experience themselves and so understand the commitment and determination required to succeed at every level of sport. Their strength also lies in the support of our student athletes in other areas of their sporting journey – pastoral care for each individual is paramount with Housemasters and Mistresses, tutors and a dedicated nursing team on hand to support them; peer group support and mentoring is also encouraged between students. Strength and conditioning training, nutritional support and links to external clubs supports the external validation of our student’s success – Worcester Warriors and Sale Sharks rugby, MCC cricket, European Junior Golf Championships, LT National tennis, British Shooting champions, IH Manchester football, Olympic swimming and shooting – as well as Commonwealth, England and Wales hockey, England netball, national equestrian events and inter-school competitions.

Our efforts have not gone unnoticed either! We have been recognised by two leading sports organisations – the World Academy of Sport (WAoS) as an Athlete Friendly Education Centre (AFEC) - an aspirational accreditation mark for schools, universities and others that support athletes to achieve their education and athletic goals, and School Games Gold, as well as numerous accolades and awards including the The Top 100 Cricketing Schools, Tatler’s Top 5 Schools for Future Olympians, Winner of the LTA Regional Tennis Award 2021, Top 10 ISGA, Top 10 Schools for Sport to name a few. At the end of day though, we never lose sight of the following vital fact: there’s no point if it’s no fun and our coaches encourage everyone to play at the level at which they are comfortable but challenge them to take it as far as they can master. At Ellesmere, we recognise that sport and the provision of sport is a vital part of every child’s personal and social development. We value the breadth of opportunity and the wide range of specialism that we can cater for. Students see the Ellesmere approach as an essential part of their all-round education and the skills and qualities developed build a platform for living adult life successfully and being truly ‘Life:Ready’. Open Day - October 9th 2021 1-4pm www.ellesmere.com

Keeping

Cool

Founder of DogCo, Caroline Bate, shares some top tips for keeping your best friend cool so that you can enjoy the sunshine safely, together

#1 Water, Water Everywhere It’s super important to make sure that the water bowl is full of clean water any time of the year but especially so when the sun has got his hat on. And don’t forget to add a bottle of water to your dog-walking tick-list before you head out for a walk. Whilst you have the hosepipe out for your thirsty plants, it may be an opportunity for a bit of spray play with your woof. For some, it is a favourite game but be careful not to overexert. And for those tempted by the paddling pool, just make sure that the water isn’t too cold before your four-legged fur baby jumps in as this can lead to hypothermia.

#2 Try to Avoid Long Journeys As the country opens up, we all want to jump in the car and head a little further afield, it just needs a little planning. Make sure the windows are open and cool air is circulating and regular water and

fresh-air breaks are a must. NEVER leave your dog in a parked car. Not even in the shade. It can take just 15 minutes for them to overheat.

#3 Plan As temperatures rise, try to plan your walks to suit. We love our early morning and evening walks as they set us up for the day and clear our minds at the end of the day. But they also tend to be the cooler times of the day, for everyone, and avoid the sun at its hottest.

garden but also having suncream to hand (or paw!) Light-coloured or thin-coated dogs, like West Highland Terriers, tend to be more susceptible but even those with just a white nose or ear count in this category. So, invest in some special doggy sun-cream for those vulnerable spots, to prevent nasty blisters and possible skin cancer. #4 Too Hot To Handle

Keep an Eye Out for these

On particularly hot days, the pavement could get too warm for your best friend’s paws. A good way to check is to touch it with your hand, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. If so, and even if you are unsure, stick to the grass.

Signs of Heatstroke: • Heavy panting and a rapid pulse • Lack of coordination • Excessive salivation • Glazed eyes • Vomiting or diarrhoea

#5 Don’t Forget The Suncream Just as with us hoomans, we need to protect our woofs from the sun’s rays, ensuring there are shady spots in the 54

Ask the

VET

Can dogs get doggy hay fever and do you treat it? James Dutfield explains all

One of the commonest reasons for a visit to the vet with your pet dog is skin disease, particularly allergic skin disease. Many people suffer from hay fever at this time of year, and our dogs are much the same, except rather than suffering from itchy sore eyes, hives, congestion and sneezing, dogs often show their allergies through their skin or gastrointestinal system. They present with signs such as recurrent diarrhoea or vomiting, itchy feet, itchy arm pits, itchy or infected ears, itchy eyes, itchy bottoms, recurrent gland issues, itchy backs, recurrent skin infections and rashes. Some dogs will only have one or two of these symptoms, other dogs will suffer from them all, and the severity of clinical signs varies between individuals. We call “doggy hay fever” Atopy. Around 10-15% of dogs will suffer from atopy and if you own a dog who suffers from recurrent ear, skin, feet or anal gland infections it is likely the underlying cause is allergies. Some breeds of dog such as West Highland White Terriers and Bulldogs are more prone to allergies than other breeds suggesting

genetic factors are also involved in the formation of allergies. There are a huge range of potential allergens, from trees, grasses, weeds and flowers, to dietary allergens such as cereals and red meats, to indoor environmental allergens like dust mites and storage mites. Some dogs may have seasonal skin disease, which only occurs during certain months when certain plants are flowering. Others may have constant clinical signs which may suggest a food allergen or indoor environmental cause. TESTING Once your vet has ruled out other causes of skin disease such as mites and parasites, you may wish to test your dog to see if you can identify the allergens involved. Currently there are two common tests we use: intra dermal skin testing and blood serology testing. The idea is to try to identify and eliminate or reduce allergen load from your dog’s day to day life in order to stop or reduce the clinical signs of Atopy. If it is not possible to eliminate these allergens, (which often it’s not), then you can either formulate immune therapy desensitisation injections or trial treatment options. TREATMENT There are a number of treatment options available, I find there is no one size that fits all and a combination approach often works best. Treatment options vary hugely in cost and effectiveness, and I usually have to tailor

treatment based on the dog’s response to treatment, the severity of the presenting clinical signs and the owner’s budget. Here are a few Atopy treatments available; • Antihistamines (chlorphenamine or loratadine) • Immunotherapy desensitising injections • Steroids (prednisolone) • Apoquel (oclacitinib) • Atopica/Cyclavance (ciclosporin) • Cytopoint monoclonal antibody injections (lokivetmab) • Hydrolysed diets • Topical shampoos • Essential fatty acids; usually as a food supplement or topical preparation. Remember, just like human Hay Fever, Atopy is often an ongoing disease that we have to manage rather than cure, but with the right treatment plan, your dog can live a happy itch free life. MEET THE CHEF:

JOE

LIPTROT Head Chef at Cottons Hotel and Spa What’s your first memory of your love for cooking? When visiting Asia as a young teenager (13/14) and seeing the different styles and methods of cooking in the open street markets. I’m very interested in all cuisines Where were you trained, and how difficult was your training? I trained at Macdonald Portal Hotel Cheshire and at Jean Cristophe Novelli’s in Marbella. I found it tough but I was determined and worked every hour under the sun to gain as much knowledge as I could. What do you love most about your job? Every day is different and meeting new people I also like interacting with customers. Describe your style in three words. Quirky, different, modern. What’s your favourite dish to create? Beef three ways, fillet of beef (medium rare), short rib bon bon, braised ox cheek, carrot puree, potato terrine, heritage carrots and rich red wine reduction. Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? Modern day inspiration is a lot on social media (Instagram) but also cookery books.

What four ingredients are necessary in your kitchen? Seasoning (salt & pepper), butter, garlic and shallots. What are you most proud of in your career? Working for Marco Pierre White and Jean Cristophe Novelli. Who is your biggest supporter? My 4 year old boy, Tyler. What would you want to have as your last meal? Curry. Are there any foods you just don’t like? Celery, I can’t stand it but I still use a lot in my cooking. What do you think is the most challenging ingredient to work with? Spices, it’s a fine line between right and wrong. Do you do the cooking at home? No, I eat out as I don’t want to make a mess of the kitchen. What advice would you offer to an aspiring chef? Work hard, listen and ask as many questions as possible. www.cottonshotel.co.uk

MEET THE CHEF:

IAN

WORLEY Executive Chef at Escape to Freight Island When did you know you wanted to be a chef? I always loved cooking and wanted to train as a chef after leaving school. My parents talked me out of it and advised me to train as a lawyer, so I went to college to do A-levels instead. Plan A clearly didn’t work out. Where were you trained? I went to college in North Devon and was trained by Manfred Meczurat. He was an old school German master chef. The training was hard, but I didn’t mind because I loved it What do you love most about your job? The fact that every day we come into work and get the chance to make people happy. Not every job gives you that opportunity. Describe your style in three words. Simple. Creative. Interesting (hopefully). What’s your favourite dish to create? Has to be a Sunday Roast with the family around the table. I think it’s one of the things the British do right. Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? From my travels, eating in great restaurants and from the many way more talented chefs than me. What four ingredients are necessary in your kitchen? Garlic, stock cubes, a good salt and a good oil.

If you could prepare a meal for anyone, who would it be and what would you make? I would love to cook for my first head chef, Mike Archer, who sadly passed away before I got any good. I would cook him Steak Diane which I remember as being his favourite. What are you most proud of in your career? Working for over 20 years in a very demanding and ever evolving industry. And still loving it. Who is your biggest supporter? My incredible partner Liv and my children. Would not be able to do it without them. What would you want to have as your last meal? Often a topic of debate in the kitchen and I can never settle for one dish, it's too hard. I’ll say a roast rib of beef with yorkshire puddings and gravy today. Are there any foods you just don’t like? I think they’re an incredible ingredient but there is something about the flavour of parsnips I just don’t like. What do you think is the most challenging ingredient to work with? Rabbit. Do you do the cooking at home? Of course. What advice would you offer to an aspiring chef? Enjoy learning, cooking and being a chef for as long as you can before becoming a sous/head chef and all the paperwork starts. You will be a much stronger professional long term and its way more fun. www.escapetofreightisland.com 61

SPOTLIGHT ON... DA NOI CHESTER

Best for... Regional Italian food with a contemporary twist

W O R D S : K E V I N E VA N S

D

a Noi is an absolute gem that is tucked away in the heart of Chester near the main drag on the high street. In 2012, Valentina and her husband Fabrizio moved from the foodie heaven of Turin Italy to Cheshire. Valentina developed her passion for food from her Nonna, and pursued this passion by enrolling at the prestigious ‘Associazione Cuochi’ catering school in Turin. After moving to the UK with Fabrizio’s old job in 2012, the couple realised there was a gap for truly authentic Italian cooking in the North West and (much to Valentina’s initial despair) decided it was time to try their hand at becoming restaurateurs - and Da Noi was born! Valentina’s style is to elevate regional Italian food and give it a contemporary twist. When she curates her menu she looks

to take clients on a journey and transport guests to her home region of Piemonte. My colleague and I went for lunch on a Saturday and received such a warm welcome from Fabrizio and the team. On the menu - regional Italian food with a twist, with Italian wines to compliment them. The staff were only too pleased to help us with our choice. We couldn’t believe the quality of the food and experience, and value for money – this is definitely a

restaurant where you get more than you bargained for. Our highlights were the carbonara with crispy pancetta and also the desserts. You really need to save space for these – the tiramisu was by far one of the best I have had in a while. I would really recommend visiting Da Noi as it really delivers and gives you that authentic Italian experience with such a warm friendly feel – an experience not one to be missed. 63 Bridge Street, Chester, CH1 1NG www.danoichester.co.uk 63

TOP B B Q TI PS from 44 Foods Cornish chef and sustainability expert James Strawbridge shares his top tips to ensure you’re barbecuing to perfection this summer.

#1 - Cook over embers not flames - be patient and wait for charcoal or wood to really burn down to achieve a strong constant heat to cook with. Once you have hot embers it reduces the chance of flare ups and gives you much more control on the grill. #2 - Veg power - try grilling vegetables over embers as the star of the show rather than just serving salads and veg kebabs on the side. Spring greens work really well, cauliflower steaks, radishes or peas in the pod can all be cooked in a grill basket. #3 - Low n Slow - have a go at a slow cooked recipe this summer with some wood chips for smokey flavour. Try your own beef brisket hot smoked down at 120˚C with an internal temp of 94˚C for 5-6 hours for an authentic tasting BBQ.

#4 - Get down and dirty - try onions thrown straight onto the hot coals and cooked in their skins for 45 mins. Once blackened slice in half to remove the sweet, tender onions from their charred outer layers and toss with parsley and butter. #5 - Chimney lighting - to avoid waiting till sundown to tuck into your BBQ get efficient and buy a chimney to light your charcoal. They are really quick and easy to use and massively reduce the set up time before you can start cooking. #6 - Don’t forget the mop - to avoid your food drying out remember to baste, glaze or mop with a tasty BBQ sauce. Also try adding a bowl of water into your BBQ oven if indirect grilling to keep your meat moisture.

66

#7 - Ole smoky - Add a handful of wood chips to your BBQ for a woody aroma and deep smoke ring. Try using apple, oak, hickory and cherry shavings. #8 - Probe safety - invest in a meat probe to keep an eye on the internal temperature of your food. They are really easy to use and help to understand what’s going on inside the BBQ. #9 - Burn baby burn - buy sustainably sourced charcoal to cook over rather than imported briquettes. #10 Keep smiling - if you’re not smiling then you are doing it all wrong! Enjoy cooking over fire this summer and be creative with your recipes. James recommends: 44 Foods for your BBQ food bundles available from, www.44foods.com

DO N’T FO RGET YOU R CON DIMEN TS Here’s the latest addition to the Tracklements planet-friendly range that will make firing up the barbecue well worth the effort and touch the sweet spot for friends and family whether they’re vegan or meat eaters and everything in between. A tangy, sweet and sour relish chock-full of chopped peppers, Tracklements Sweet Pepper Relish delivers a sultry whisper of heat via the mustard seeds and chilli. Sure, it’s amazing on a banger, a juicy burger or a kebab. Of course, it takes a grilled halloumi wrap on a trip to the stars, but it’s also fantastic as an ingredient added to sautéed courgettes and mixed through sweetcorn. And if that’s not enough, Sweet Pepper Relish pairs exceedingly well with goats’ cheese, does a nice number on pizza and adds sweetness and heat (as you’d expect) to pasta sauces. But let’s not forget its heartland, simply slathered onto a hunk of fresh bread and butter! Tracklements have a wide full range of delicious condiments to liven up your BBQ. www.tracklements.co.uk

LA S T O F THE S U M M ER WIN E S Here are six wines to have on standby this summer from Familia Torres; delicious bubbles, a crisp white, an aromatic white, a barbecue red, a rosé and something sweet.

Miguel Torres, Estelado Rosé is one of Chile’s most innovative sparkling wines. Made entirely from Pais, Chile’s oldest grape variety. Planted by many small farmers, the variety was long forgotten, and undervalued until Torres rediscovered it for making quality wines. Estelado is certified Fair-Trade, and Miguel Torres Chile ensure growers are paid a fair price for their grapes. Made using the traditional method with second fermentation in the bottle. Pale pink with fruity notes and a fresh wild strawberry character on the palate. Enjoy with shellfish, fish and also cake!

Sangre de Toro 2019 First made in 1954, this delicious red is all about the Spanish way of life. It’s the one with an ecofriendly bull on the bottle, representing Spain’s culture. Made from native Spanish grapes, Garnacha Tinta and Carinena, selected from vineyards throughout the region, gives this red its spicy notes and delicious fruit. Pour a glass and relax with the TV or invite friends and family around and enjoy it with BBQ grilled meats, smoky cheese, or any tomato-based dishes. www.sainsburys.co.uk

Floralis Moscatel Oro is one of the Mediterranean’s most characteristic dessert wines made since 1946. Luscious, clean and crisp, with lovely honeyed and acacia flavours and naturally sweet and an unmistakable floral perfume of roses, geranium, lemon and verbena. Enjoy a glass chilled with a slice of almond tart, or a flaky pastry Pastels de Natas with its rich custard filling served warm or anything chocolatey to finish of a perfect summer night dinner under the stars. www.ocado.com

Torres Vina Sol Rosé 2020 is the pale raspberry pink sibling to the classic Vina Sol. Made mainly with Garnacha and Carinena, it’s fragrant and sensual, with notes of redcurrant and a lovely spicy, pink peppercorn finish. A mouth-watering crispiness makes this is a fresh and balanced rosé, ideal for aperitifs and summer soirees and at 12.5% alcohol, perfect for impromptu sunny alfresco lunches. Enjoy it with charcuterie and tapas, cold chicken and pasta salads. www.ocado.com Torres Vina Sol 2020 is as bright, fresh, and lively as it gets, and at 12% alcohol is very drinkable on a hot summer’s day. Made from Parellada (with a touch of Garnacha Blanca), the white grape traditionally used to make sparkling Cava wines, here it shows beautifully as a still wine. Try it with sushi, soft cheese (brie or camembert) or even spicy Thai. www.waitrose.com

Vina Esmeralda 2020 is a perennial favourite, always reliable, and best shared with friends in the sunshine. A versatile white wine made from a blend of delicious Moscatel with a dash of blowsy Gewürztraminer, which gives an off-dry wine with expressive floral characters and tropical fruit aromas. Delicious served well-chilled as an aperitif or with appetisers such as avocado and shellfish or melon with ham or with grilled fish. www.tesco.com

N a ti tiv ve Att ttrr acti actio on Ben Younie and friends enjoyed sampling Ducie Street Warehouse’s summer menu followed by an overnight stay at Native, Manchester

N

is Manchester’s hottest aparthotel, offering New York loft-style inspired living in the city centre. As a born and bred Mancunian, I love any excuse to return to my home city, so when I had the opportunity to trial the new menu at the Ducie Street Warehouse, and an overnight stay in a premium Native apartment, I was on the first train to Piccadilly. Native combines the edginess of Brooklyn with Manchester’s unique charm. Starting as you walk in with the queue round the block for Gooey Co’s quirky cookies and donuts, you know you’re entering a place that is worth the hype. The staff in the Ducie Street Warehouse lounge and bar go out of their way to make you feel welcome, and the vast, open plan warehouse setting makes for a cool, calm and vibey space to relax in. A new outdoor terrace has recently opened, to make the most of the summer sunshine, but we opted for a table indoors to really feel part of the atmosphere. The restaurant menu really lends itself to relaxed socialising with friends with small plates to share (I’m still thinking about the chilli, sesame & peanut crispy chicken and miso buttermilk dip now), followed by big plates…and even bigger plates. As a group of four, we went for the 800g tomahawk of Cheshire beef, with vine roasted tomatoes and beef jus to share, and it did not disappoint. After lunch it was time for check in, which was speedy and super friendly. No question or favour is too big or small for the reception

team and that northern charm and friendliness was experienced from one staff member to another. The premium two bedroom apartment is ideal for a weekend stay for groups (studio, one-bedroom, twobedroom, loft-style apartments and duplex penthouse are also available). Both bedrooms were super large and spacious, with high ceilings and the original features kept from the old warehouse. The room also offered a large living space and kitchen, so we were able to truly make ourselves at home – if home was a New York loft apartment in the heart of Manchester city centre. As a base for our weekend back in the city, Native couldn’t be better located. We spent the afternoon shopping in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, followed by an evening of chasing the northern sunshine and outdoor drinks – all within a short walk from the apartment. But, with our room being so nice, we chose to call it an early night in order to relax back in our lounge and make the most of the spacious, cosy space. Native really brings the best of Manchester together, from location and accommodation, to service and food and drink. For a weekend or overnight stay, it has everything you need to make the most of the city – but a warning, you may be tempted to not leave once you’ve arrived! www.duciestreet.com, www.nativeplaces.com 75

Weekend by the Sea With the sun beating down on the north west, Kathryn Otto and partner headed to Southport to enjoy a summer seaside break

S

outhport is reopening with a warm and welcoming smile. With so many open spaces and outdoor activities to enjoy, it’s the perfect place to spend the summer months doing the things you’ve missed, whether that’s thrill seeking, eating out or just relaxing. I jumped into the car and made the short drive from Cheshire to experience a perfect UK trip in this beautiful Victorian coastal town.

Stay

We chose to stay at the unique Vincent Hotel, a contemporary boutique hotel situated in the heart of Southport. Opening its doors in 2008, the hotel was designed by award-winning architects Falconer Chester Hall. With six floors of tranquillity, the hotel has 59 guest rooms all designed with style and relaxation in mind. The luxury hotel also boasts an in-house hair and beauty salon (House of Evelyn) and several food and drinks offerings. www.thevincenthotel.com

Eat

We enjoyed a lovely lunch at Remedy opposite The Atkinson which overlooked the lovely row of shops on lord street, where we were looked after by Ben and enjoyed a club sandwich and a glass of wine. The summer sun even made an appearance which made our lunch even more enjoyable. Remedy, 110a Lord Street, Southport, PR8 1JR, www.remedysouthport.co.uk For our evening meal we decided to visit Kalash Divine Indian, which offered authentic indian cuisine, the team could not do enough for us, the food was delicious and the way we were looked after was incredible, we just wish there was a Kalash restaurant in Cheshire! We will certainly be returning. Kalash Divine Indian, 1 - 5 Lord St, Southport, PR8 1RP, www.kalash.co.uk

What to do

Southport is a beautiful quintessentially English seaside town with so much to offer. Next to our hotel was The Atkinson which is Southport’s home for music, theatre, art, literature and history. They offer an exciting and varied destination for families, cultural tourists and arts enthusiasts alike, with a full day and night time offer. Significant investment has been made in refurbishing the stunning 19th century buildings to create a welcoming and accessible multi art-form venue with a strong contemporary feel. On our visit we looked at the new Red Rum exhibition (available until October) – which traces the Southport legend’s life through a racing career which took him over 300 miles and 1800 obstacles to his becoming an iconic sports celebrity in retirement. Southport Pier

This was like going back in time, Grade ll listed, opened in 1860 and is the longest pier and oldest iron pier in Britain. And, if there isn’t enough history in the pier itself, in the pier pavilion you can view a small exhibition on Southport’s history as well as playing traditional penny slot machines including pre decimal one-armed bandits, offering the perfect summer nostalgia for the whole family. Southport Pier, Promenade, Southport, Merseyside, PR8 1QX * In 2018/19 Southport Pier underwent a £2.9m programme of refurbishment and restoration funded by Sefton Council and the Coastal Community Fund.

There are so many beautiful beaches and areas surrounding Southport that we wanted to explore so we chose to do this by bike. We visited the Southport Eco Centre and hired two bikes to cycle on the esplanade to Ainsdale Beach around 3.5 miles away, then we decided to come back and visit the Pier 77

Escape to the

COUNTRY Louisa Warde visits the Chatsworth Estate with a stay at The Cavendish Hotel in Baslow, al-fresco fine-dining and the quintessential English countryside

A

s our first trip away from Cheshire in nearly two years, it was fair to say that we were looking forward to our visit to The Cavendish Hotel, possibly even an understatement. We had planned our route of just under two hours, taking us across country through the picturesque villages of Monyash and Longnor, with ice-cream and farm shop stops along the way. Arriving at the Chatsworth Estate for lunch time we chose a shady old oak to picnic under, carefully studied by the roaming sheep. If you don’t plan for your picnic or are looking for an easy option, the Estate Farm Shop is brimming with goodies produced on the estate for eating now or taking back home with you. Re-energised it was time to visit Chatsworth Gardens, with its rock garden and stunning water features, not to mention its

80

rolling parkland and monumental sculptures. Back in the car for the short journey to Baslow and The Cavendish Hotel we were looking forward to settling in to our stay. On the edge of the village, the former coaching inn sits as if it was built to take in the views back across towards the Estate (a 20-minute walk direct from the hotel for anyone interested). A warm welcome awaited us and we were shown to our room for the night, passing comfortable bar and lounge areas full of warmth and fabulous décor. Our room, number 16 is one of just 28 individual styled bedrooms on offer. Situated in the Old Wing, the oldest part of the hotel, it is classed as a Superior Room, meaning it is just a little bigger than the Classic option. Featuring a large four poster bed, with steps to climb up into it, the room was

traditional yet complete with everything you need, including WiFi and proper coffee. And that is without mentioning the double aspect windows to gaze from. As a treat our evening meal was in the Laurent-Perrier Champagne & Seafood Terrace, the latest addition to the foodie offering at the hotel and here for the summer. Situated on the lawn in front of the hotel and benefiting from the best of the views, it offers a substantial seafood menu from prawn and chilli linguine to Chatsworth Gin cured salmon and specials of the day. Our choice was the large sharing platter for two which included tiger prawns, the aforementioned gin-cured salmon, dressed crab, prawn and crayfish in a Marie Rose sauce, curried pot shrimp, house salad, homemade bread and herbed new potatoes. All freshly delivered each day and prepared at the station in front of you. If we had to choose a favourite it would have to be the curried pot shrimp for its buttery loveliness. Accompanied by a crisp, cool Yealands Sauvignon Blanc, had it not been for the rolling view, we could have been at the harbour in the South of France. It felt like a proper holiday, not simply a one-night break away. Desserts did not disappoint either, one chocolate and hazelnut cheesecake that was gone before I was offered a chance to sample and a tantalizing lemon posset

with blueberry meringue sorbet. If you want to try for yourself the Seafood Terrace will be open from 12 to 8pm throughout summer but booking is essential. And for those who aren’t fishy, The Gallery Restaurant offers great local produce and original cooking from head chef Adam Harper, who trained under Simon Rogan. Using the best, freshest local produce, the Tasting Menu is a great idea and whilst it changes regularly, includes Chatsworth Beef Tartare and Derbyshire Lamb on its five-courses. It was time for a restful soak in the bath, using most of the Noble Isle Yorkshire Rhubarb bath gel and a climb into that beckoning four-poster. When morning came, we were refreshed and ready for our day ahead. Breakfast is served in The Gallery Restaurant and is full table service from the friendly waiting team. For us it had to be the full English and Eggs Royale, accompanied by an assortment of freshly baked pastries. There’s an awful lot to do in the Peak District, from walking to cycling, fishing so you won’t be wondering what to do with yourself. We headed to Bakewell for some of the famous pudding and a little shop before heading back in the car and home to Cheshire, thoroughly recharged. www.devonshirehotels.co.uk 81

Drive The Great Usurper

The BMW 3 Series is one of the best cars you can buy, which is probably why so many people do just that. It’s one of the UK’s most popular models. But in the age of electrification, BMW has created a zero-emission alternative to its favourite four-door saloon. It’s called the i4, and it’s a sleek fastback with a big battery and bags of power. The basic eDrive40 has 335bhp and a 367-mile range, while the top-end M50 gets 536bhp, four-wheel drive and a 316-mile range. Both will get from 0-62mph in under six seconds, but they do so in a silent, guilt-free way. Meet the new boss. BMW i4, from £51,905, www.bmw.co.uk

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

yundai-owned luxury brand Genesis has arrived in the UK, and it means business. Creating a new luxury car brand is tough. Nissan-backed Infiniti failed despite a portfolio of decent products, while Citroen spin-off DS is still finding its feet. Only Lexus has truly succeeded. But after dipping its toe in UK waters a few years ago, Hyundai’s Genesis marque is hoping to make waves in Europe. And it isn’t messing about. For now, the range comprises two SUVs – the GV70 and the GV80 – and two saloons named G70 and G80. There’s also a gorgeous estate version of the G70 called the G70 Shooting Brake. We’ve driven the GV80 (pictured), an Audi Q7-rivalling 4x4 blessed with imposing looks and an absolutely glorious interior. The design is straight from the Bentley playbook, with swathes of wood and quilted leather, and the quality is up

84

there with Mercedes and BMW. The plush cabin hints at a comfort-orientated drive, and the GV80 definitely feels a bit soft and wallowy. This isn’t a sporty vehicle. Still, a creamy 3.0-litre diesel engine provides plenty of punch and goes about its business in near-silence, while the high-speed ride is great. In all, the GV80 makes a convincing luxury car, and it’s a genuine alternative to the SUV establishment. But Genesis wants to shake up the market with service, as well as products. Owners get a personal assistant to act as a point of contact, and dealers are more or less eschewed in favour of a click-and-collectstyle service. Could this be the new way of owning a premium car? When you think of eco-friendly cars, the Jeep Wrangler isn’t normally the car that comes to mind. Unashamedly militaristic in style, the all-conquering 4x4 is usually a gas-guzzling 4x4 with the aerodynamic properties of a breeze block. And although the looks aren’t going to change any time soon, the powertrain under the skin is due a makeover. Jeep has given its legendary machine a plug-in hybrid system, with an all-electric range of up to 30 miles in urban traffic. Once that’s exhausted, the 2.0-litre petrol engine takes over. Despite cutting CO2 emissions dramatically, Jeep claims the Wrangler 4xe still offers “unprecedented off-road performance”. Jeep Wrangler 4xe, £TBC, www.jeep.co.uk

PUTTING THE S IN SUV

HYBRID HIGH JINKS Along with sister brand Toyota, Lexus has become a hybrid specialist. But despite a range full of controversially named “self-charging” hybrids, it has only just released its first plug-in hybrid. It’s an option on the new-look NX SUV, which has been revealed with an all-new interior and evolved exterior design. The revamped cabin is a treat with a massive infotainment screen that might just signal the end for the dodgy setup Lexus has been using. Finally. Just as important, however, is the optional 2.5-litre, 302bhp, all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid system. With an all-electric range of around 40 miles, it’s designed to offer “class-leading” efficiency. If you’d rather run the conventional hybrid, though, you still can. And Lexus has promised improvements in both power and economy. Lexus NX, £TBC, www.lexus.co.uk

In a world where electricity is taking over, there’s something slightly naughty about a big V8 petrol engine. And there’s something very naughty about this particular one. It’s a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged engine and you can find it under the bonnet of Bentley’s latest Bentayga SUV. Dubbed the Bentayga S, the powerful model is designed to offer “heightened agility” that makes the big 4x4 better through the corners. Stiffer, high-tech suspension and a clever system to make turns tighter have seen to that. The 542bhp V8 makes it quick in a straight line, too, getting from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds and topping out at 180mph. Bentley Bentayga S, £POA, www.bentleymotors.com

I

t was Oscar Wilde who said an idea that wasn’t dangerous was unworthy of being called an idea at all. Although he died more than 120 years ago, it’s almost as if he foresaw the advent of the coupe-SUV – a niche corner of the car market that should never have been uncovered. For one, the idea of taking a super-useful family SUV and then making it less practical feels like amputating your nose, mouth and eyes to spite your face. It’s a stupid idea. But sometimes it works, and when it works, it really, really works. So much so, in fact, that I now believe one particular coupe-SUV is up there with the best cars money can buy. That’s partly because I think it’s so brutally good looking, and partly because it’s based on the Porsche Cayenne, which was already one of the best cars money could buy. Those imaginative Germans have called it the Cayenne Coupe, and it’s basically a Cayenne with half the boot missing. That means you get the same sports-car-on-stilts front end, but you get a rakish rear window that makes the whole thing look more purposeful and aggressive. The whole car feels as though it has more menace about it. The catch is, of course, that you get less space inside. You can’t carry quite so much in the boot and you can’t fit quite such tall passengers in the rear seats, although that isn’t as big an issue as you might think. That’s mainly because the Cayenne Coupe is still massive. It’s almost 5m long and 2.2m wide, so there’s plenty of interior space. The rear seats can still take 6ft adults and the boot is still enormous. In fact, at 625 litres, the boot is only around 20% smaller than in the proper SUV, and that was enormous to start with. So it’s all good on the practicality front.

86

More importantly, the quality on display is absolutely staggering. As always with Porsche, the car feels as though it was carved from a single lump of diamond. The switches feel like they could survive a nuclear war and the panels all fit together with the precision of a Swiss watch. But despite all that ruggedness and quality, everything is wrapped in soft leather, making it more tactile than a Louis Vuitton handbag. You won’t find anything more luxurious or better constructed this side of a Bentley. You won’t find many cars with more potency, either. You can have the Cayenne Coupe with a choice of engines, all of which have more power than most third-world dictators. The ‘basic’ option is a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine that produces 335bhp, but you can have a 4.0-litre V8 with 542bhp. Or, if you’re feeling brave, that engine can be paired with electric motors to create a 671bhp plug-in hybrid. That means you’ll get from a standstill to 62mph in an absurd, supercar-worrying 3.8 seconds. I wouldn’t bother with any of those engines, though. Unless you’re worried about company car tax (in which case you need the 3.0-litre, 456bhp E-Hybrid), go for the 434bhp S or the 454bhp GTS. Both will do 0-62mph in about five seconds, though the former uses a 2.9-litre V6 while the latter has a 4.0-litre V8. Try both and pick whichever you prefer. Either way, you’ll be getting a fabulous car. Not only will it be spacious, fast and well built, but it’ll drive astonishingly well. Because although the Cayenne Coupe shines in so many areas, you’ll only find its forte when you hit a good back road. Of course, that’s only to be expected. Chopping away the Cayenne’s rear end should, in theory, make it more

criticise, so… Um… Nope, I’ve got nothing. There’s one fiddly sub-menu in the touchscreen that I don’t like and there are some suspect colour options, but that’s about it. I could go down the obvious route of complaining about a lack of practicality, but that’s a bit like criticising Tom Cruise because Peter Crouch is better at reaching the top shelf in Waitrose. It kind of misses the point. As a result, the Cayenne Coupe has left me with a conundrum. For years, I’ve been saying the Porsche Panamera Sports Turismo – the estate version of Porsche’s big Panamera sports saloon – is the best car in the world. But now it has competition from within its own family. The Cayenne Coupe is cheaper and, I think, better looking. It doesn’t drive quite as well, but it comes close. It’s tit for tat, and both are great cars. No matter which I chose, I’d spend the rest of time questioning my decision, but on balance, I’d drive away from the Porsche dealer in the Cayenne.

agile and more stable. With less weight sitting high above the road, it should roll and wallow less when you corner at speed – not that the Cayenne did much of that anyway. The newbie might be a bit more surefooted, but we’re talking marginal gains because the Cayenne was so well engineered in the first place. Suffice to say whatever its more practical sibling may be capable of, the Coupe is a match for it. In every department, this is a magical car to drive. The steering is precise without being too heavy, the brakes are powerful without being too snappy and the throttle response is sharp without being too spiky. I’m convinced this thing could match or even beat the likes of the VW Golf GTI or Ford Focus ST on a race track, and that’s high praise for a two-tonne SUV. And it does that while still feeling smooth and comfortable. Get on the motorway and the Cayenne Coupe wafts along like a taller, fatter limousine, gliding over the road surface. And it works around town, despite being absolutely massive. Even the driving position is brilliant, and there’s plenty to like about the seats, too. This really is all things to all people. In the interest of balance, I’m told I have to find something to

Gary Fredson The ESE Group CEO discusses why going green has never made more sense

R

ecent Covid19 restrictions might have put your summer plans on hold, but it doesn’t all have to be doom and gloom. If you’re going to be spending more time at home this summer, then why not invest in it by choosing renewable energy? We’ve been catching up with renewable energy expert and CEO of Liverpool based company ESE Group, Gary Fredson, on the importance of going green and how it can benefit you.

How does solar work? PV solar panels capture the sun’s energy to produce renewable, clean and green electricity. PV cells do not require direct sunlight to generate electricity and will still work - even on a cloudy day! Energy from your panels is converted into electricity by a Solar Inverter and can then be used to power your home. Your solar panels will generate power at varying rates throughout the day depending on the weather and the amount of sunlight they receive, and that power is measured according to how much electricity is being produced when they’re working at peak performance, in kilowatts peak (kWp). Solar technology is still evolving rapidly, meaning

there are many more options available today that are more affordable and efficient than ever before. For example, while solar panels are still the most used array, new developments mean that PV cells are now being fitted into roof tiles and glass windows too.

How much solar energy does a solar system produce? A 4kW PV system will generate around 3,500kWh of electricity in a year, which is enough energy to run an average 4-bedroom family home. However, the amount of energy produced by a PV solar panel system can vary due to a few things, including your location in the UK, the weather, the age of the panels, and whether they are shaded or not.

What are the benefits of using solar energy? The sun gives off enough energy in one day to power the entire planet for a year. I’ve always said that solar is the sleeping giant of the energy world, and now it’s time to start waking up to the potential of solar energy in the future of energy generation.

There are many more benefits to using solar than just producing clean, green energy. Switching to solar can not only reduce your carbon footprint, but your energy bills too. Solar reduces your reliance on the grid and leaves you less vulnerable to sudden increases in energy prices. Even better, a solar installation could actually increase the value of your property by up to 15%.

What is ‘Battery Storage’ and why should we be interested? Solar panels produce the most electricity during the day when many of us are at work. In the summer, when they are at their peak performance, many of us are making the most of the sunshine and spending more time outdoors, meaning our energy usage is a lot lower. Based on figures produced by PassivSystems (the largest solar metering company in the UK), you could be losing up to 70% of the energy that your panels are producing during these times. By storing the excess electricity that you generate during the day into a battery, you’re then able to use it in the evening when the sun has gone down, and your energy consumption is usually at its highest. Reducing the amount of power you need to draw from the grid with a battery Storage System is another way you reduce your energy bills. Our Battery Storage Systems work with Octopus Energy’s Agile Tariff and can help you make the most of renewable electricity with or without a Solar PV system. Battery Systems are easy to use, simple to install, and are a great money saving asset. With one of our Battery Systems installed, you’d never be left in the dark in the event of a power cut: we’ll quite literally help you to keep the lights on and save you money while we’re doing it. To find out more and to enquire about how you can benefit from Battery Storage, you can visit our website.

What are your thoughts on EV Charging? EV Charging is going to be the next big thing, with sales of electric vehicles increasing year on year. At the end of May 2021, there were over 560,000 plug-in vehicles on the road, that’s an increase of 66% from the year before, which is massive. The only problem with electric vehicles at the moment is the infrastructure of the energy grid, which means that, unfortunately, there just aren’t enough EV Chargers being installed across the country at the minute. But at ESE, we’re looking to change that by offering affordable domestic and commercial EV charge points right across the UK. Our charge points can work as standalones, separate from the grid, or can be powered from your Solar PV system. By using solar you could charge your EV for free, and still have enough energy to power your home. With renewables, the possibilities really are endless. In my mind, nobody in the UK should have to pay for their own electricity with the technology that is currently available to us. Solar energy is the easiest and most affordable way to generate your own electricity. You can live semi off-grid, lower your energy bills, reduce your carbon footprint, and help to save the planet, all by making the switch to renewable energy with ESE Group today. www.esegroup.co.uk

Q&A

with

DAVID TRAGEN,

WE CHAT TO THE CHESHIRE-BASED FURNITURE DESIGNER AND ARTIST Tell us a bit more about you… I grew up in South Manchester. I travelled during my degree in International Business at Sheffield and continued after university, drawn by my love of languages and music. I lived in Pisa, Genoa, Rome and Syracuse and then moved to Barcelona. It was in Barcelona that I found my creative metier, which began with upcycling furniture found on the city streets. What started as a hobby became a calling. In my 7 years spent in Spain, I studied marquetry and wood-carving, art and design, and soon I was making furniture full-time. I returned to the UK, where I completed a year’s fine furniture making course in Devon with David Savage and spent a further year working for Silver Lining Workshops. I came home to South Manchester and, in 2004, set up my own business. I now design and make contemporary furniture, sculpture and wall art to commission from a converted barn in Ashley, Cheshire. Who are your greatest influences? The first furniture designer that grabbed my attention was Jaume Tresserra and I was lucky enough to interview him in person for my Design School studies in Barcelona. His Gavina bench was a piece that I remember paving the way for me to start bending the rules about “form following function”. At the same time, I was really drawn to the architecture of Santiago Calatrava and there is no doubt that elements of his work have found their way into my design vocabulary. In the last 10 years, I would say that Zaha Hadid has been my greatest influence, but I always have my eyes open to the stars in other creative fields both old and new, for inspiration. Constantin Brancusi and Anish Kapoor’s sculptures, Umberto Boccioni and Bridget Riley’s paintings, even Iris Van Herpen’s Haute Couture. Having said all of that mother nature would be my greatest influence. There is nothing like the Golden Ratio and the effects of sound

frequencies on organic growth patterns to teach us that the template has already been laid out for us to tap into. What have been some of your best jobs/experiences at work and why? Making pieces that are designed to stand the test of time, means that each project is extremely rewarding as I know that they have been considered purchases by my clients. I really enjoyed designing and making a bespoke lectern for Manchester Reform Synagogue back in 2008. The synagogue is also known as “Menorah” which is the seven branched candelabra and being able to reinterpret this object in the reading desk in an abstracted form was the sort of creative challenge I really like. Another memorable project was making three Strata Series tables which totally transformed a client’s living room. This felt like an endorsement for the new more sculptural direction I started embarking on.

“What star ted as a hobby became a calling” Traditional vs contemporary style? Whilst traditional style informed my training as a fine furniture maker, my work is most definitely contemporary. What do you consider your greatest achievement? My latest piece Transmission, was my most complex and ambitious to date and drew on all of my 25 years’ experience as a designer and maker. Completing this in April felt like a really significant milestone and it symbolises how I have sought to push my work forward despite the technical knowledge gap that I start new ideas with. What would your superpower be? I often dream about flying and as someone who struggles to see the wood for the trees (pun intended), an elevated view of the world would give me plenty of perspective. www.davidtragen.co.uk

CHIC INTERIORS The Cheshire Magazine talks to Dawn Kilburn, Founder of Chic Interiors in Cheshire What’s your design story - how did you come to be an interior designer? I studied interior design at the Chelsea School of Art, before going to work for the Orthet Group where I specialised in boutique design. I worked with high end designer brands including Armani, Prada, Gucci, Fendi and DKNY. I then created my own interior design business, based in Cheshire.

How would you describe your design style? I would describe my style as mid-century modern. I am a huge fan of designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen and Hans Wegner.

Who inspires you? Philippe Starck is a huge inspiration, with his wide range of designs.

How would you describe the customer experience at Chic Interiors? At Chic Interiors, customer service goes far beyond our shop floor. We have a dedicated team, focused on delivering outstanding service. Our experienced staff have a wide knowledge in all of our products, which is reflected in the Chic Interiors experience.

What led to you opening your Knutsford store in 2017? There are many factors to consider when opening a retail store, many years of planning are involved. When opening a successful bricks and mortar store, you need a good business plan in place. This includes market research and a strong legal structure. Location is also paramount. The key to success is all about staff, knowledge and understanding your market.

In April this year you moved to new premises in Nantwich, completing half a million pounds in renovations both inside and outside the building. Why was it important for you to combine a place for people to eat, drink and shop? We wanted to provide a unique shopping experience at Chic Interiors - a place where customers can shop, relax and unwind, enjoying all that Chic Interiors has to offer. I wanted to create a beautifully curated space with a luxurious patisserie, scattered pink velvet seating, where customers can enjoy an Illy coffee and cake, or indulge in a brunch, light lunch or afternoon tea, with a glass of complimentary fizz.

What’s next for Chic Interiors? Due to Covid, certain plans have been put on hold – however, we are planning a trip to the United Arab Emirates when restrictions have been lifted. We can’t say anymore for now… Chic Interiors offers a full range of interior design services both residential and commercial www.chicinteriorscheshire.co.uk Facebook: @chicinteriorscheshire Instagram: @chicinteriors.cheshire

ASPEN HOUSE by Callender Howorth A Contemporary Approach on a Country Home

D

eep in Buckinghamshire’s countryside was a 6000 square feet neo-Georgian House built in the early nineties, filled with potential. Mark Howorth took this diamond in the rough and sculpted a true contemporary design gem. Taking the home and stripping it back to its brick foundations, Callender Howorth completely revamped the interior design of the astonishing residence, having then curated the furniture and home décor selection as well. Among this selection is a standout accent piece by BRABBU that brings the opulent country house aesthetic to life in the most glamorous and eccentric way possible. The brief from the client requested a “sublime and luxurious home” that was energetic and elegant with a sassy twist – and the result fit like a glove. Entering the home, one is greeted by a double staircase with renewed marble flooring that’s shined upon by a bespoke lighting fixture crafted in hand-blown glass, an item that serves as a unique signature piece that allows the client’s personality to be an integral part of the project – something fundamental to Callender Howorth’s work philosophy. Going up the stairwell on to the first floor, one finds the master bedroom. This spacious suite is

98

entirely decorated in accordance to a neutral colour palette, with occasional striking pieces lending their visual impact so as to create a more intricate final look. One of these being the SAYA Mirror by BRABBU, sitting above the sleek white dresser. The SAYA Mirror is composed by a polished nickel concave frame – which perfectly echoes the room’s grey tones – with an undulating surface covered in casted brass details, and a convex mirror. These shapes recreate the oceanic bank this mirror was named after, all while adding a daring je ne sais quoi to the décor. Like the remaining bedrooms in the house, the main bedroom has its own ensuite bathroom, dressing room and seating area, providing the entire family with some much-needed personal space. Finally, taking into consideration the client’s passion to entertain, a custom cinema was designed. Aiming to create a true cinematic experience, Callender Howorth worked closely with an audio-visual specialist and installed custom-made cinema chairs which adjust automatically to the user’s physiognomy while simultaneously featuring illuminated cup holders and being covered soft chenille fabrics, all to achieve ultimate lush comfort. www.brabbu.com

M

any of us are accustomed to estimating the value of our contents when reviewing our home insurance, but how confident are you that you’ve correctly estimated the costs for rebuilding your home? Unless it’s your profession, it may not be something you’re very familiar with, but it’s the homeowner’s responsibility to make sure the chosen insured amount is enough to cover the cost of a disaster. This is known as the ‘sum insured’, and it’s the maximum amount that an insurance company will pay out. In the event of needing to rebuild part, or all, of your property and the sum insured is too low, you could end up needing to make up the shortfall, which could stretch to several thousands of pounds. And particularly for high-value, larger or more unusual homes, calculating an accurate rebuild sum can be challenging. So how can you make your way to a confident rebuild sum? Beth Owen, Bespoke Insurance Specialist at NFU Mutual Chester, talks about some of the things to look out for and consider to avoid underinsurance on your building: 1. The insurance value is based on a mortgage valuation or a % of market value – neither of these are indications of what it will cost to reinstate the property and are therefore likely to be an inaccurate estimate for rebuilding costs. 2. Listed buildings status or a conservation area location, may require additional permissions and specialist craftsmen and materials.

3. The property’s construction materials - for example, stone or non-standard materials such as ‘green or high tech’ can be unique and difficult to obtain. 4. Extensive outbuildings, garages, store sheds, brick walls, courtyards, driveways and even tennis courts need to be included in the valuation. 5. The age of the property. 6. The fixtures and fittings within the property and any recent extensions, alterations or refurbishments. 7. The location and access to the building and site. If you are in any doubt as to the accurate rebuild value of your property, please consult a surveyor. If you’re not sure whether your insurance is fully protecting your home and the things you treasure most, why not give us a call at NFU Mutual Chester?
