My life ... SOPHIE EVANS, GENERAL MANAGER AT POWELLS JEWELLERY
How would you describe yourself ? I am someone who is just trying to get the most out of life, I’m determined and a hard worker, but I make sure I take some rest when needed which normally means going for a walk or seeing family. I love what I do for a living, it enables me to work with my passion, gemmology, which I am lucky to be able to do! I manage our three shops in Chester and am also a qualified gemmologist and diamond grader which means I can identify gemstones and understand their scientific nature. Where is home? And work? I live in North Wales which is great for access to the amazing Welsh countryside and the bustling city of Chester where I work. I love working in Chester, it’s a city that isn’t too big but has lots of things to do and some great places to get a bite to eat. It’s always nice walking along the river and having an ice cream when the sun is shining. What did you want to be when you were younger? All sorts of things from batman to a pilot to a police officer! A little bit different to what I do now but I’m quite happy working with the beautiful gems that nature creates. Name a few of your favourite places to be... This is an easy one, I absolutely love being out in nature, I’m lucky to have Moel Famau on my doorstep so I’ll often be up early for a climb and a bit of peace at the top. I also enjoy walks with my dad around Bickerton and Burwardsley which normally end up in one of the locals for a tasty lunch.
“
I love what I do for a living, it enables me to work with my passion, gemmology, which I am lucky to be able to do!
”
What or who inspires you? I’ve started to compete in kettlebell sport so in that sense the women in the sport are very inspirational with their strength and determination, so I draw from that, other amazing athletes like Emily Campbell the Olympic Weightlifting silver medallist is a very inspiring woman. What was the last gift you gave someone? It was a gift for my husband, a delayed Christmas present but he loves the Welsh artist Kyffin Williams and has a couple of his prints, so I found a book featuring a good selection of his artwork. It went down well. Tell us a secret/fun fact? Did you know that a lot of stars in the universe have diamond cores? The largest one found to date weighs a staggering 10 billion trillion carats and is 4000km in diameter which is larger than our moon. What would your Mastermind subject be? Hmm it would either be gemmology or Fawlty Towers, my childhood consisted of watching episodes on repeat, so I’d like to think I know them like the back of my hand. Can you share a story from your wedding? Well, the entire day was just amazing and luckily, we didn’t have any hiccups that I can remember. We did hire some brilliant entertainers who were Laurel and Hardy lookalikes. They stayed in character the whole time, entertained the guests with jokes, magic and general Laurel and Hardy shenanigans. www.powellsjewellery.com

THE FEA R INDEX The Cheshire Magazine talks to Josh Hartnett about his new role in Sky’s fast-paced thriller based on the best-selling novel by Robert Harris
F
ast-paced thriller based on the bestselling novel by Robert Harris. Dr Alex Hoffman (Josh Hartnett) is a computer scientist and genius who is ready to make a killing. Alongside his Hedge Fund business partner and best friend, Hugo (Arsher Ali), he’s launching VIXAL-4 to investors - an AI-driven system that exploits fear in the financial markets and promises returns of billions. But this is not the day Alex and Hugo had planned on. What follows are the worst 24 hours of Alex’s life - cutting across reality, memory and paranoid fantasy, forcing him to question everything he sees with his own eyes. In the pulse of Geneva’s financial district, Alex’s sanity is shaken after he is viciously attacked at his home by a man who knows all of his security codes. After more unexplained occurrences, Alex becomes convinced he’s

I thought it would be great to be part of this, and I wasn’t disappointed. I’m delighted to have been involved in this terrific production. being framed. But as secrets surface from his past, will anyone believe that he isn’t just losing his mind? Detective Leclerc (Grégory Montel), assigned to Alex’s case, struggles to work this former CERN scientist out. Hoffman’s talented artist wife, Gabby (Leila Farzad) might just be losing patience this time, whilst Hugo’s only concern is the billion-dollar business on the line. Invention can be lonely, and in a modern world of AI, capitalism and technological breakthroughs, Dr Alex Hoffman is about to learn the hard way how destructive his creation might be. Below Hollywood heavyweight Josh Hartnett discusses his love of Robert Harris and his new role.
What makes Robert such a great writer? He is very prescient. His novel of The Fear Index was written a decade ago, but the concept is still very current. It’s still something we’re all very much talking about. It doesn’t feel dated at all.
What drew you to The Fear Index? I loved Robert Harris’s book. He is so good at this genre. Also, the producers, Left Bank, are responsible for The Crown, which I’m a huge fan of. They’re very much at the top of their game. So when I was approached by them,
The underlying idea of the story is pretty terrifying, isn’t it? Definitely. It’s scary to think that we’re creating things beyond our understanding
Tell us more. Robert has a very keen grasp of the human condition, and he also knows how to create a really intriguing story. He possesses the perfect balance – he writes gripping blockbusters, but he also has a very deep understanding of people. That combination is getting rarer and rarer. He really hits the sweet spot.

“Robert (Harris) has a real grasp of the human condition, and he also knows how to create a really intriguing stor y.” and that no one person has the knowledge that these machines have. The danger is that they become ungovernable. That’s what makes this thriller so dramatic. What is the story based on? It’s based on Frankenstein, and it works brilliantly. Alex fits the model of Dr Frankenstein very well. A lot of scientists and tech guys are uncontrollable. This story shows that we’re at their mercy and how fallible that process can be. How would you describe Alex? At this point, he is living in a world that he doesn’t understand. His friend Hugo has hired himself to deal with the day-to-day things in the company that Alex is not interested in pursuing. Alex is driven only by the concept. More than anything, he is interested in using the world of finance to create the series of data points, rather than making money. He is more interested in science than finance. The problem is, the more knowledge his machine acquires, the
more sentient it becomes and the more danger it poses. How would you characterise Alex’s relationship with Gabby? She is the first big love of his life and his protector. She understands the ways of the world much better than he does. Alex only sees the upside, but Gabby takes everything that is happening with a grain of salt. She is also able to understand the shadiness of Hugo. A guy like Alex, who was a young prodigy, has spent his life with people who are not his peers, so his social skills are negligible. But Gabby has those skills in spades, and he finds that very alluring. He hasn’t had to take care of himself before, and she’s helping him to do that now. Can you outline Alex’s friendship with Hugo? Hugo is everything Alex would like to be in terms of his ability charm people and navigate the world. Hugo is very important in helping Alex achieve his ends. The problem is, Hugo

has no scruples. He will throw anyone under the bus, in order to get his way. Alex doesn’t see that coming. Money does strange things to all of us! Why is fear such a potent force? It can be the most useful emotion when you’re on your own in the middle of a hostile environment. It can be very powerful influence for good. But it can take you down the wrong path and lead very quickly to panic. That’s when you lose your bearings.
There was a great sense of camaraderie between you four lead actors in The Fear Index, wasn’t there? Absolutely. We got on so well. We were an amazingly diverse group. Arsher is extraordinarily thoughtful person. He is a very loyal friend who is so much fun. He was lovely to be around. Grégory and Leila were wonderful, too. She was the “glue guy” who kept us all together. She is one of the most delightful people you could ever meet. It was such a heavy shoot, and we filmed a lot of pages every day. I was there for every scene and did not have much time to recover. So when we did hang out, we took the opportunity to really bond. If I had a night off, I’d say, “let’s go and have a few drinks together and chat about how tired we are!” The Fear Index is available on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW
Does The Fear Index show that science is risky? Science can be dangerous if you let it run unchecked. So this drama is a love letter to the peer review process. You always need someone else to test your theories. If other people vet them, science is the

efore I impart my spring/summer 2022 favourite pieces for a spring wedding, I wanted to say hi, and that I’m thrilled to be a part of The Cheshire Magazine’s team. I’m here for you, and if you have any specific fashion conundrums or styling dilemmas, get in touch. When it comes to weddings, some bridal parties will provide a dress code, which can be helpful to some, but cause unnecessary panic to others, especially if getting glam isn’t in your nature. Either way, the dress code is there to help you – do you go ‘as you are’, ‘evening glam’, ‘black tie’ or even ‘white tie’? The invite should state, but if in any doubt, ask the bride for some clarity. The one no-no, unless stated on the invite is, don’t wear white, cream or ivory – obvious I know, but some people have been known to match the bride. I’m also a great believer that we should get value for money from our clothes and be able to wear them more than once so I love this nude Oscar De

High Glamour S
ylvie Millstein’s muse has been quietly awaiting the return of high glamour. With Pre Fall 2022, the party season has begun and the HELLESSY women’s diary is now full of social engagements to long wipe away memories of her days cooped at home. Standout pieces include the ‘Clemence’ dress, a cape bustier mini dress in rouge stretch crepe with covered belt and ecru shirt tail. Other gowns come in the form of the ‘Luma’, a front twist belted shirt dress in an exclusively designed ecru chain jacquard satin, that nips in at the waist with a matching belt. A future classic that is truly a buy now, wear forever piece. Evening separates have been a core part of the HELLESSY dna since the brand’s inception. She continues her long love affair with taffeta as an always relevant, undated fabric that allows a woman to add drama to her day-to-day. Seen best on the ‘Lottie’, a one shoulder asymmetric drape top with bow that is paired with the ‘Amelie’ pencil skirt with side slit and a ruffle

detail, both in a luxurious malachite green moire. It is also observed on the striking ‘Celeste’ cape bustier top, an opulent evening ensemble that teamed with any humble pant, old or new, ensures all eyes are fixated on the HELLESSY woman when she enters a room. A HELLESSY collection is never complete without a stellar line up of effortless minidresses, Pre-Fall is no exception. The ‘Thatcher’ blazer dress in a Hurel heritage floral embroidered satin with sleeve slits offers effortless allure and sophistication. Teamed with chunky boots for stomping around the city or stilettos for dinner dates. Newness comes in the form of the ‘Amandine’ mini shirt dress with padded shoulder and pleated skirt in sky blue satin chain jacquard. Full of girliness and charm, this playful style has an eternal youthfulness. HELLESSY extends their iconic party denim range with the introduction of chic ombré denim tailoring. Coming in deep shades of blue and black the ‘Kiyo’ jacket is the epitome of day-to-night ease with its tuxedo silhouette and elevated black lapel with contrast pocket square. Teamed with the ‘Romeo’ pant in this season’s bespoke HELLESSY wool houndstooth, which is completed by a floor-sweeping side drape to add an extra touch of elegance, the HELLESSY women is equally at home Uptown or in the Lower East Side. Velvet corsage adorned jeans are paired with poplin shirts with glove effect sleeves for an effortless desk to dinner outfit. This season’s standout tops include the ‘Ondria’, again paying homage to Millstein’s much loved power sleeves, this ruched babydoll style is for late summer nights in the city or exotic getaways. Coming in both a printed stripe faille which resembles a modern breton stripe and a malachite green, this bustier will be treasured in the HELLESSY muse’s wardrobe season after season. For a relaxed alternative that still exudes laidback confidence, HELLESSY detailed knits are best seen this season on the beautiful ‘Magalie’ off shoulder sweater in a deep shade of orange with bordeaux velvet ribbon and cutouts. The HELLESSY woman is never afraid to stand out, this season the ‘Mariana’ knit halter dress with its cascading scarf in beige navy stripe intarsia is for her. It’s still comfortable, like the ‘Annabelle’ belted cardigan with neck scarf in cobalt blue eco wool.

Hayley & Marcello at
Peckforton Castle WORDS: Charlotte Deponeo – Senior Wedding Coordinator

’d have to say my most memorable wedding here at Peckforton would have to be Hayley and Marcello’s big day in the summer of 2021. Hayley and Marcello first walked through the drawbridge at Peckforton back in the December of 2018. After falling in love with the castle, they booked their dream day with us for June 2020, then the pandemic hit. Throughout all the lockdowns and changes to restrictions on weddings, they were both very understanding throughout the whole process and ended up postponing the date a total of 3 times and finally, on Friday 23rd July 2021, Hayley and Marcello said ‘I do’ at Peckforton. The day was beautiful, the sun was out and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky to be seen. They had a civil ceremony which took place in our magnificent Great Hall which was beautifully dressed by Ian Lloyd Events and Hayley walked down the aisle to live music from the String Quartet. After the ceremony, the guests then headed out to the coach house for the drink’s reception and the happy couple were able to have a moment alone with their amazing photographer, Lydia from Moon & Back Photography, to get some shots of just the two of them against the fabulous forest backdrop and castle grounds. After their drink’s reception, the guests headed into the Drawing Room for their Wedding Breakfast where Stefan, the Tall Toastmaster, announced
the newlyweds into the room as Mr & Mrs Scrocca. For the Wedding Breakfast choices, they chose Cauliflower and Truffle Soup to start, Slow Cooked Feather Blade of Beef for the main course and for dessert they went for the castle’s Sticky Toffee Pudding (a personal favourite of mine). They later headed back into the Great Hall, which had been transformed for their evening reception by Hipswing who installed extra lighting and a dancefloor. Hayley and Marcello had their first dance and then their guests then joined them to party the night away to music from a DJ and Johnny Ross on the Saxophone. Hayley and Marcello were a fabulous couple to work with and since their special day they have reached out with some great feedback – “Firstly, Charlotte, our wedding coordinator, was outstanding. Her service and attention to detail was unreal. I know we were a couple with high demands, mixing that with replanning 4 times due to a pandemic, and Charlotte still put us at ease and gave great advice and service. All our guests felt so welcomed and relaxed but also the sense of trust given from the castle was great and really made the day. Again, thank you for giving all our friends, family, and ourselves the best memories of our special day.” www.peckfortoncastle.co.uk 41

Kate Park Events at
Capesthorne Hall WORDS: Kate Park
W
e love organising weddings at Kate Park Events, they are such happy occasions! A marquee wedding is a perfect choice for couples who want an entirely bespoke look for their special day. The beauty of a marquee is that you have a completely blank canvas to create your dream wedding and watch your vision come to life. With complete control and creative reign, you can choose every detail, from the size of the space to the colour of the carpet, to make your wedding like no other. In January 2021 we were contacted by a bride-tobe looking to start planning her wedding. With no idea where to begin, a family friend of hers recommended getting in touch with us, and after exploring several venue options they decided on a marquee in the grounds of Capesthorne Hall. Before starting on the more exciting parts, such as the furniture and florals, it is important to create the perfect marquee structure. Some of the key elements we always consider include; the marquee’s exact location and positioning, whether to have window or lined walls and ceilings and the rough layout you want for inside. One of the biggest pieces of advice we can offer is to always use a reputable company and invest in the marquee because trust us - the end result is worth it! For the client getting married at Capesthorne Hall, we designed a marquee with window walls across the entire front to showcase the beautiful building, which we lit up as it began to go dark to highlight the spectacular location. We also chose to have high ceilings to allow the space to suspend a show-stopping overhead installation to
42
create the wow factor that they were looking for. Once the structure was confirmed we could move on to the décor, which is the fun part in a marquee. With no restrictions or limitations, we can be creative with the installs to really impress the guests and leave them talking about it for months to come. From the start, the bride-to-be knew she wanted a pastel colour scheme but was unsure how to bring her vision to life without it looking overwhelming in combination with all the other elements such as lining colour and style, carpet colour, table cloths, stationery and place settings etc. So we decided having pastel coloured florals whilst keeping the linings and table cloths in more neutral colours would keep the aesthetic balance. To create a statement piece, we had a large chandelier shaped overhead floral installation which had guests stopping in their tracks to admire as they entered the marquee. There of course are so many logistics to consider when planning a marquee wedding (or any marquee event), which is where we come in. At Kate Park Events our job is to guide you through all the decisions whilst making it an enjoyable, stress-free experience. www.kateparkevents.co.uk

Amy & Elliot at
Eaves Hall WORDS: Ocean Harrison - Wedding Coordinator
O
ne of my most memorable weddings here at Eaves Hall would have to be Amy and Elliot’s wedding in the summer of 2021. Having gone to school together, Amy and Elliot met again a few years later at a friend’s BBQ and just fell for each other. Elliot proposed in Central Park in New York, booking a private horse and carriage tour and getting down on one knee at the Bethesda Fountain. A dream proposal! They first came to Eaves Hall in early 2019 and fell in love with the beauty of our Grade II listed Georgian country house. As an exclusive venue, they were so delighted to find an intimate location in which they could share their day with their nearest and dearest and for everything to happen under one roof. As with many weddings in the last 18 months, it was a difficult time navigating COVID restrictions. At first, they were considering postponing because their date was just before the “freedom day” in July 2021 but they stuck with it and thank goodness they did as it was a magical day. The bridal party stayed the night before in The Lodge, our three bedroom mini-mansion located just a stone’s throw from the hall. The couple were planning an intimate affair so they were thrilled that the whole wedding party could stay at the hall on the night of the wedding, making it the perfect house party. On the day, the weather was picture perfect for their outdoor
44
ceremony on the manicured lawn in front of our Wedding Pavilion. A live pianist played Clare De Lune as Amy walked down the aisle, it was truly one of those fairytale wedding moments. They chose a beautiful colour scheme of greenery and white with hessian and craft style rustic details. It was a very classic look with the men in black dinner suits and the bridesmaids in blush pink to compliment Amy’s stunning dress. For the wedding breakfast, Amy and Elliot were keen to create a meal to remember so chose a mix of their favourite dishes including ham hock, lamb rump and a raspberry mousse. That evening, the guests enjoyed a delicious Indian inspired buffet. Scott and Lees, the photographers, captured every moment perfectly. They make all of our Brides and Grooms feel really comfortable and they have a real talent for capturing the whole day without being noticed by the guests. After the wedding breakfast and first dance, it was time to get the party started with a DJ, sax and percussionist from the award-winning DFC. They really know how to get a wedding party dancing and it certainly led to some fabulous photographs. It was such a pleasure to work with Amy and Elliot on their special day and the fabulous feedback we received was just the cherry on top – “It was honestly the best day of our lives, and we thank the whole team at Eaves Hall including our wedding coordinator, the managers, the bar staff and the chefs for helping us create our perfect day.” www.eaveshall.co.uk

NEW CHANEL COLLECTION La Pausa de CHANEL – Rouge Coco Baume The Spring-Summer 2022 Collection, La Pausa de CHANEL was inspired by the villa that once belonged to Gabrielle Chanel, located high on the ridge of Roquebrune: La Pausa. This place, bathed in soft, warm sunlight and existing in perfect harmony with the bountiful natural landscape that surrounds it, provided inspiration to the Makeup Creation Studio for this new collection. The ROUGE COCO BAUME's smart formula allows for custom coverage, ranging from a sheer wash of colour after a single coat to lipstick-like intensity after three coats. Available in seven shades. Ask As k the Expe xperrt DANIELA DOBBIN, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT DD CLINICAL, CHESTER HOW TO TREAT SENSITIVE SKIN CONDITIONS SUCH AS ROSACEA AND ACNE, ALONG WITH PREVENTATIVE ADVICE Sensitive skin is very common but often misunderstood. Even understanding if your skin is genetically sensitive or just sensitised can be confusing. Sensitive skin is a weak protective function of the skin that can be genetically predisposed and often accompanied with stinging, burning or redness and generally experienced on and off throughout life. Sensitised skin can happen to any skin type due to impaired barrier function for any number of reasons or external factors. As you might have noticed, skin is extremely complicated, some people react to various factors such as environmental changes, cosmetics, nutrition, stress and much more, causing various symptoms varying from redness, irritation, itching or blemishes. So taking note of what triggers your skin and trying to avoid them is a positive step in preventing flare-ups. When sensitive skin is also accompanied by other skin disorders such as rosacea or acne it can become even more confusing as often people believe strong or aggressive ingredients are best to tackle breakouts or reduce the small spots that are often associated with rosacea. However, regardless of what is happening on the skin, it is important to optimise the skin barrier function and reduce
inflammation first before tackling other issues so the skin can function more effectively and optimise skin health.
Here are My Top 3 Tips to Reduce Sensitivity: 1. Use Ingredients Such as: Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, niacinamide has been shown to also calm redness and strengthen the barrier. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, meaning that it defends your cells from free radicals and helps prevent cell damage. It’s also super moisturising and has been known to aid wound healing so this is for sure an active ingredient your sensitive skin will love. Ceramides are lipids that are naturally found in the outermost layer of the skin i.e. the epidermis. They basically act as the ‘glue’ between skin cells, forming a tight seal and helping protect against external contaminants. This active ingredient is great for providing moisture, barrier function and keeping bacteria out. It also improves skin tone, making it feel firmer and plumper. 2. Turn Down the Heat: Avoid foods known to stimulate blood flow, such as alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, artificial sweeteners, red wine, tomatoes and dairy. They could be triggering those flare-ups. Also don’t have too hot showers or baths and avoid sauna and steam rooms. Try not to have the heating or air-con directly angled at the skin. 3. Try to Reduce Stress: The skin is a unique organ that interfaces with the mind, body and external world. How we are feeling can often be written all over our faces! Stress is like fuel for inflammation and chronic stress means chronic inflammation in the skin, so those skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea etc. will be triggered and exacerbated. Stress can also affect skin support structures and barriers, breaking them down, and accelerating the ageing process. Increased oil production leads to more breakouts and makes any skin condition worse. www.ddclinical.com

F eel the Lo L o ve With this issue focusing on love and romance I suggest some self-love steps everyone can benefit from #1 - Love Yourself From Within
#2 - Get Your Glow On
Fuel your body with hearty, wholesome foods such as blueberries, fish, broccoli, spinach and almonds. A great date night treat would be a garlic king prawn Buddha bowl from April’s Kitchen with tender stem broccoli, cherry tomatoes, beetroot and edamame, followed by some dark chocolate and a nice glass of your favourite organic red wine.
Drink 8-10 glasses of water, every day. Your body and skin will thank you. Staying hydrating helps you look and feel great and is essential for your heart, which on average pumps 7600 litres every day. Water helps your heart do its job, and pump blood through the blood vessels to the muscles more efficiently. It is critical for your heart health and staying well hydrated throughout life could reduce the risk of developing heart failure, according to the research presented at ESC Congress 2021.
#3 - Open Your Heart Standing straight and tall with your shoulders back, your head level and in line with your body, pull your abs in and move with confidence, it increases your sex appeal! To maintain a good posture I recommend doing wall angels - with your bum, back, shoulders, elbows, hands and head against the wall, and keeping contact with the wall at all times, slowly raise your arms up towards your head and back down to just below shoulder height, hold for a second and repeat 10 - 12 times.
#5 - Feel The Love Show yourself love first. Some easy ways to help you achieve total self-love are simple, stop
50

comparing yourself to others or worrying about their opinions. Allow yourself to make mistakes, we are all human. Once you learn to love yourself, you will be able to spread that love and happiness throughout the rest of your life. Simple actions like showing support to each other, telling a friend or loved one they look great or congratulating them on an achievement, big or small, can brighten someone’s day. Compliments, compassion and kindness are free, sprinkle them all like glitter. “There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved” George Sand.
#5 - Colour Me Happy
#8 - Heart Centred Living
Red is the colour of passion, confidence and power, and actually gets the heart physically pumping. Research states that the colour you wear can affect your mood, behaviour and stress levels. Red releases dopamine, increases metabolism and raises blood pressure. It even operates at a subconscious level to make you look and feel sexy and attractive!
Live a life of love - “We seem to need healthy, raw emotion and honest human contact more than ever and we respect those who can bring it out in others” - inc.com. By sharing your feelings and expressing your passions honestly, you encourage those around you to do the same and reduce conflict throughout all areas of your life. Offering an enhanced experience of intimacy and genuineness in your relationships.
#6 - Heart Nourishing Workouts Being physically active helps to protect your body and mind and is good for the soul. HIIT training is my “go-to” workout to get my heart pumping. Try my favourite workout - interval sprints: 2 x 400 metres (rest for 90 seconds between each set), 4 x 200 metres (rest for 45 seconds between each set) and 8 x 100 metres (rest for 30 seconds between each set) and finish with 50 burpees. Don’t be disheartened if you’d prefer not to run, you can always do 10 burpees on the minute to get your heart pumping.
#7 - Do What You Love Find your happy place. Whether that is spending time in nature, getting lost in a good book or even playing rounders with your family, spend as much time as you can doing what you love. “Love doesn’t make the world go round, love is what makes the ride worthwhile” Franklin P. Jones.
#9 - Laughter A natural stress reliever, laughter stimulates many organs, enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles and increases endorphins that are released in your brain. It decreases your heart rate and blood pressure, encouraging a good, relaxed feeling. Soothing tension, it stimulates circulation and aids muscle relaxation. Both of which can help reduce the physical symptoms of stress. Long term effects of laughter improve your overall mood, self-esteem and general well-being. Laughter really is the best medicine.

encote is nestled on the outskirts of Shrewsbury Town centre located in 65 acres of Shropshire countryside with panoramic views of historic Shrewsbury. This is no ordinary restaurant; they have a glamping village on site which is available for mid-week and weekend breaks and they make wine! Yes, there are vineyards on the grounds - 23,000 vines were initially planted in 2015/2016. These have produced a range of white, sparkling, red and rose wines in the rounds and then expertly blended and bottled on the premises. This really intrigued me as I was unaware that English wine was being made so far north and that it was being done so well. Hencote was recently visited by two of Britain’s best-known wine experts – Oz Clarke and Jancis Robinson who both heaped praise on the Shrewsbury vineyard, celebrating the gold winning reds that Hencote’s have produced and sampled the recent white vintages commenting that more awards

could follow. The grounds and vineyard are spectacular, and the restaurant has full floor to ceiling glazing, giving customers a breathtaking panoramic view of the vineyards and the surrounding Shropshire countryside. Customers can visit and look around the vineyard and finish with a wine tasting – a great thing to do with friends and family. After all of that, customers can also go into the onsite wine shop and purchase the wines that they have tasted, or if you are a restaurant diner you can buy wine to take away with you. It really is a restaurant that offers so much more than dinner and all so local. The restaurant has a brunch, a la carte, tasting and Sunday lunch menu which is great as it allows you to have either a casual or formal experience to suit your needs. On arrival we were greeted by the friendly front of house team and taken to our table where Sahara the sommelier took us through

the story of the vineyards and gave us an impromptu wine tasting. We sampled Evolution 2019 - which was a deliciously crisp sparkling white and then progressed through to Vivienne 2019 - a beautiful white blend of Solaris and chardonnay. We then moved on to Suzanne - a rose made with pinot noir and finishing with Mark 2 - a rich red wine made with a blend of pinot noir, precoce and rondo. Sahara was so knowledgeable and passionate about the wines that are made at Hencote’s, and it really added an extra experience to the night. We started with the glazed duck breast with roasted beetroot and burnt orange puree and the confit pork belly with julienne pickles and Granny Smith puree. A contrast of rich flavoursome protein with the acidity of the pickles and purees brought balance to the dishes, and they were expertly plated. For main we opted for the poached rump of lamb with onion puree, charred onions, baby leeks with toasted barley and pan
jus and roasted monkfish with burnt cauliflower puree, pickled cauliflower and potato crisps. These did not disappoint; the lamb was perfectly pink, and the monkfish dish was one of the favourites of the night. For dessert, we squeezed in an espresso panna cotta with hazelnut crumb – a great twist on a classic and was deliciously creamy with that hit of coffee and the classic sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and clotted cream ice cream. Do not miss out on the desserts – they are a must. Hencote is a great venue for not only an intimate dinner but for a larger party of friends or even as a wedding venue as the restaurant space is vast and impeccably designed – this is a real gem in the Shrewsbury dining scene – one that I will be coming back to! www.hencote.com

STARTER: CAN YOU TELL A
STORY FROM YOUR EARLY YEARS THAT HELPED SHAPE YOU?
One of my earliest memories from childhood was going to watch football with my father. Afterwards, I’d stay with him as he went to work in a restaurant; he was a chef and would always let me help out in the kitchen. My favourite station was pastry - I loved helping the pastry chefs prepare for service – and I believe this time spent watching and learning from my father is what ignited my passion for food.
MAIN COURSE: CAN YOU
SHARE A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF?
I am incredibly proud of the team we have built at Dakota; surviving the pandemic with a full team is a fantastic achievement, and I’m honoured to work alongside such passionate colleagues. I am also delighted that I have been shortlisted for a Catey award – Hotel Restaurant Chef of the Year. It is wonderful to have been recognised by my peers, and this truly is a highlight of my career so far.
DESSERT: WHAT IS THE SWEETEST STORY YOU CAN SHARE?
As a father, it is great to see my children mirror my passion for food. I have begun teaching my eldest daughter to cook, and it has become a father-daughter tradition each weekend to spend a few hours together in the kitchen. Every Sunday, we choose a recipe and cook it together: last weekend, we picked a classic carbonara, and after showing her the steps she recreated it for the family. She’ll be giving me a run for my money in the kitchen in no time! www.dakotahotels.co.uk 64

s someone who’s spent their life sharing their passion for travel with others, I’m delighted to welcome you to my new monthly travel column. To introduce myself, I’m Phil Aird-Mash, and I have the wonderful job of CEO at the ITC Travel Group, which includes the Inspiring Travel Company based in Chester along with a collection of other specialist brands. From luxury beach holidays to wildlife encounters, live sports events and off-the-beaten-track tours, we cover only the most incredible travel experiences out there. Each month, I’ll be sharing with you our expert insights on where to find the best places to enjoy a holiday or adventure. For this issue, with love very much being in the air, I’ll be sharing some ideas on where to spend a romantic break.
MILAIDHOO,
JADE MOUNTAIN, ST
So, where better to start than with the Maldives? There’s perhaps nowhere else in the world quite as romantic as these luxurious islands. One of my favourite resorts here is the incredible Milaidhoo resort, where I recommend staying in an open-walled Beach Residence for incredible views over your own private infinity pool. Visit between May and October to see manta rays swimming in the bay, or arrange for a secluded sandbank picnic for something truly memorable. Jade Mountain in St Lucia is also perfect for a romantic escape. The resort’s sanctuaries offer unbeatable views over the iconic Pitons; if you’re feeling active, you can take a hike through the rainforest together, or head out for a rejuvenating dip in the sulphur springs. For those who dream
of tying the knot, Jade Mountain also offers wedding packages, effortlessly taking care of all legal proceedings for you. For a getaway in September or October, Santorini is heaven. Split your time between two hotels, such as Vedema and Mystique, to get the most out of your stay. Don’t miss Vedema’s incredible 400-year-old wine cave for a wonderfully atmospheric romantic dinner. Then, for the best sunset views, head to Oia’s castle, where you’ll look out over the windmills and whitewashed buildings as the sky lights up in its famed shades of orange and pink – an unforgettable moment. www.inspiringtravelcompany.co.uk VEDEMA, SANTORINI,

I’m lucky to have experienced a great number of weddings, I always love the part when the bride walks down the aisle to their own choice of music. I’ve seen happy brides glide with smiles to all manner of sounds, from the traditional Bridal Chorus and Pie Jesu to lighter, happy and meaningful tunes, which have included Simon & Garfunkel and Donna Summer. My favourite moment from my wedding - and what I also enjoy seeing at weddings - is the part (usually) post-ceremony, when all the nerves have evaporated, and friends and family intermingle and relax together. Time seems to stand still at this moment and the day slowly melts into a love-filled celebration of joy.
And finally, what would be your perfect date night? As a mother of two, young football-mad boys, date nights are few and far between, so when we do get the chance my husband Dan and I head out to one of Manchester’s restaurants to sample their tasting menus. I especially love Tattu and the changing menus at Six by Nico, then I will drag a reluctant Dan to the nearest club to finish the night on the dancefloor. www.hyatt.com t: +44 (0) 161 359 5550 71
Location Tucked away in a tree-lined avenue close to the centre of the city, The Bath Priory immediately draws you into a sense of tranquillity as you drive through the gates. The city of Bath has been on my list of places to visit for some time and the hotel’s location couldn’t be better. A short stroll through the park and past the Royal Crescent brings you into the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage City, offering stunning architecture and amazing shopping and hospitality options. All of this is neatly nestled in a small but perfectly formed city you will want to come back to time and time again.
Facilities Bath Priory is a splendid Georgian house, built from traditional honey-coloured Bath Stone, sat behind a group of mature trees shadowing it from the road and a bustling city. The home until the 1960s was owned privately and the house and surrounding gardens, then a school wing until in 1994 was the first hotel to be bought and become part of the collection owned by the Brownsword Family. The hotel now boasts 33 rooms (26 rooms and 7 suites) which match with period furniture but are complemented with modern contemporary bathrooms to relax and unwind. Each room is unique and with high guest retention, many visitors return to try different rooms and experience the hotel's charm and sophistication on a regular basis. On the ground floor, the Library and Drawing Rooms offer space and peace to enjoy the beauty of the artwork, bar and restaurant which opens out onto the hotel’s awards winning gardens. What you can’t see on arrival are the 4 acres of lawns, terraces, trees and hosts of vegetable and fruit gardens. Step onto the terrace and you are lost in the stunning beauty of these grounds and forget you are in the heart of a busy city. Being able to walk the gardens is therapy enough and take time to sit in the resplendent and manicured surroundings looking back at the impressive site. As a boutique hotel, even at full occupancy, you

are lucky to have plenty of space around you and time to unwind. If this wasn’t enough, linked to the main hotel is the Garden Spa by L’Occitane. It features treatment rooms, an indoor pool, poolside sauna, elliptical steam pods and showers. You can easily and discreetly slip from your room to the warm and luxurious setting of the spa. A real sanctuary within a sanctuary awaits you after a day in the city or before a visit to the theatre. I ate on the terrace for supper, sheltered by magnificent vines and a natural canopy but open to the warm summer’s evening and looking out over grounds. The dinner was complemented with wine personally recommended by the Head Sommelier who enjoyed taking his time to make sure my glass matched my pea and leaf risotto. Dessert was equally as good; ice cream with honeycomb was
I stayed in one of the 7 suites, with a large bay window overlooking the gardens and grounds. Accompanied by a lounge featuring beautiful period furniture and in contrast a large, modern contemporary bathroom with a jacuzzi shower and bath. The room was heavenly, adorned with crisp white bedding and one of the best night’s sleep I have had for a long time. To stay in a city centre hotel and still enjoy silence is a perfect combination for those wanting to relax but also be within walking distance of everything a great city like Bath is all about.
My Experience Having spent a long few months working hard without a break, The Bath Priory was just what the doctor ordered. A no-hassle, comforting, stress-free environment that matches beautiful surroundings with modern hotel facilities and being small allows for each guest to be able to have time to themselves. I enjoyed exploring the gardens, spending time in peace and tranquillity and also being able to easily walk into the city centre and enjoy its vibrancy and splendour. It’s the sort of place you want to book 2 or 3 times a year to be able to take time to de-stress. In this world, wellbeing and mental health are so important and The Bath Priory is the tonic needed to fulfil these needs. www.thebathpriory.co.uk 73

imply a magical corner of the world for a perfect romantic getaway; The Fellows House is situated in the most idyllic setting, and is just a five minute stroll to one of the most picturesque parks on the outskirts of the town, Jesus Green. Positioned north of the city, the atmosphere sweeps you up, transporting you to a place that exudes lavish luxury as well as that calming, countryside charm that makes us feel at home. The scene is scattered with beautiful, windswept willow trees and dainty little riverboats, encapsulating that quintessentially British aesthetic. If you wander into the park, you will be follow winding paths that lead you into the buzz and decadence of the historical city we know as Cambridge. From here, you can treat yourself to a relaxing afternoon on one of Cambridge’s famous riverboats. After all, you simply cannot go to Cambridge without an authentic punting experience. If you have a hankering for some more educational activities, why not explore the city’s marvellous historical sites from the renowned universities to the breathtaking architecture. To my surprise, I was also very impressed with the bustling retail scene; you would be stunned at how many independent shops and unique boutiques have survived the pandemic. Given that I was lucky enough to visit before Christmas, I was able to pick up one-of-a-kind gifts that I haven’t seen anywhere else; I may have bought myself a few little things as well.
If you feel too tired for the hustle of the city centre, you could always mosey down to the park and spend a lazy day flicking through your favourite novel; being in such a historical place really makes you crave those literature classics… If you fancy inviting a few friends, you could also opt for a little picnic with your favourite nibbles and a bottle of bubbly.
Restaurant & Bars To my delight, as you stroll along the cobbled streets, you are greeted by an abundance of cosy pubs, classy restaurants and quaint little cafes, enough to keep you occupied for a whole month! In fact, I found it difficult to tear myself away from the delectable cuisine and sophisticated cocktail bars as they made me feel like a true lady of leisure. Of course, there is an atmosphere to suit every taste in Cambridge; you may not feel like a sophisticated evening in black-tie attire, but 75

instead a lunch at The Senate which gives off those cool, hipster vibes that make you feel 22 again! If you are a foodie, then The Senate will not disappoint…the food was delicious, offering fresh, flavourful, platters that will certainly satisfy your appetite. However, the experience would not be complete without a cheeky glass of wine which went beautifully with the main course. Another café you may want to try is The Sage of Cambridge, a little gem within The Fellows Hotel itself. From the outside, you are drawn in by the cute, contemporary style, making it feel modern and rustic at the same time; on the left, as you look in, it appears to be part of the hotel but on the same note, it possesses its own unique identity. Really cute. And as I soaked up the ambience, you can’t help but feel immediately relaxed with the staff ensuring that you are welcomed in with open arms. Coffee was obviously sampled first, and I have to say that it was certainly a five star morning brew; but of course, it wouldn’t be complete without a freshly made blueberry muffin. It may sound insignificant but it’s the little things like this that set you up for the day. To have this cafe in the hotel was a gorgeous touch and it made my stay all the more pleasurable. The Sage’s unique concept of the café turning into a bar in the evening, it’s simply genius, it was a welcome surprise. In the evening, we enjoyed our very own cocktail making class, and I must admit, I did make some cracking cocktails. Our drinks were made even better as the evening progressed because we got to witness the natural light filtering through the large glass windows. There really is nothing like having a homemade cocktail while watching the sunset. 76
Guest Rooms, Suite & Wellbeing Another time to shine for The Fellows House is their gorgeous accommodation, it’s having your very own apartment within the hotel. As you walk into the room, you will appreciate the spacious living space and, of course, the large, cosy beds that encourage you to draw the curtains and shut the world out. Who could resist leaping onto a freshly made hotel bed? I could even do a double roll on mine!! The kitchen and living space were separate from the bedroom, laid out as an open lounge area that you could just hunker down in. Sometimes, even when you are away, it’s nice to have a lethargic day just sipping cups of tea and flicking through Vanity Fair in your pyjamas. The bathrooms are lovely and large with fabulous walk-in showers that radiate relaxation; the space just made me feel so pampered, giving me the perfect opportunity to kick back and take some much needed time for myself; the entire experience offered the perfect combination of home comforts and lavish living

Although I was on holiday, I still looked forward to my morning gym session, and I was delighted by the fabulous gym facilities at the hotel. After working up a sweat in training, I indulged in some self-care in the calming sauna and steam rooms; there is nothing I love more than a little spa session after a work-out. To cool off from the glorious heat of the sauna, I took a lengthy dip in the pool whilst putting the world to rights and having a chin wag with my friend. The Fellows House is one of those places where you simply lose time, you could easily spend an afternoon here and forget about the city and indulge in some you time.
My Top Tips For Your Stay
Rent a bike: Get your cycle on and rent a bike from the hotel. Anyone who’s anyone in Cambridge is pictured on a bike, and what better way to explore the city? Cambridge is filled with bike traffic, so you want to fit in with all the bike savvy locals; it’s a wonderful way of getting around, and it allows you to see more than you would on foot.
Get a guide: So, of course, there are individuals offering tour guides to show you the key historical locations. It is truly fascinating to hear about how the buildings and landmarks link to famous figures throughout time. If you want to make the most of your trip, then a guide is definitely a must because it’s educational, interesting and really helpful in terms of getting your bearings. Learning where all the cool spots are will help you to plan your days better, so I’d recommend doing this early on in your stay. My tour guide was an absolute blast, not only knowledgeable but also a comedy genius! I felt like I’d been on a show! Punting! Don’t you dare miss that. Unless you get seasick, that will be the only reason I accept and even then, you should just power through to get the all-round Cambridge experience. Stay for 3 nights. I certainly needed longer, lots to see and do and revisit. It was very easy to spend half a day relaxing at Fellows, and then half a day in the city. So I’d say make it longer and to get a real taste for the city, and enjoy the exquisite home from home experience that The Fellows House has to offer. aytona is an evocative name for fans of the Ferrari brand. For many, it conjures images of the 365 GTB/4 Daytona sports car, with its sharp nose and pert rear end, but the Daytona International Speedway was also the site of Ferrari’s sweeping victory in the first round of the 1967 World Sports Car Championship. At the end of the 24-hour endurance race, Ferrari took all three podium positions. To commemorate that achievement, Ferrari has now launched a new special-edition supercar called the Daytona SP3. It’s the latest in Ferrari’s ‘Icona’ range of specialedition cars designed to celebrate the company’s famous motorsport victories. Previous iterations include the stunning Monza SP1 and SP2 models. The newcomer is a two-seater with aerodynamic styling and a lightweight composite construction, as well as a ‘targa’ removable roof panel, allowing the car to be used as a roadster or a coupe, depending on the weather. Power comes from an old-school V12 petrol engine that does without turbochargers, superchargers or hybrid technology, instead depending on sheer size and the power of exploding unleaded. The enormous 6.5-litre motor produces 829bhp and revs to 9,500rpm, allowing the Daytona to get from 0-62mph in 2.85 seconds. It’ll hit 124mph in 7.4 seconds, and it’ll keep accelerating until it’s travelling at more than 210mph. Some 599 examples will be built, and all of them are already spoken for. apoleon Boneparte had his flaws – not least an inability to get up at a sensible hour and finish the job he started – but he had the propensity for great wisdom. His preference for staff with luck rather than talent may not have worked out in the end, but he described time as a “robber who steals what is most precious to men”. With one thing or another, time has flown by in recent years, and the pace of change has been faster still. This summer marks an incredible eight years since the Tesla Model S arrived in the UK, single-handedly changing the perception of electric cars. No longer lambasted as glorified milk floats, they became desirable and interesting and sexy – something Tesla owner Elon Musk celebrated with the brand’s subsequent creations. The Model S was followed by the Models 3, X and Y, albeit not in that order. Tesla was the company that made other car makers sit up and take note of electric cars. By launching high-tech, long-range electric cars and a brilliant, bespoke charging network to support them, Tesla became the brand to beat. Despite the quality issues that have plagued pretty much every model, and the inappropriately named ‘autopilot’, which isn’t quite as clever as Musk might have you believe, Tesla still has a firm grip on that crown. But the door is open for existing car companies to take Tesla’s mantle, and that’s exactly what Porsche has decided to do. The Taycan (that’s pronounced ‘tie-can’, in case you were wondering) is the brand’s first attempt, and what a car it proved to be. Better built than any Tesla, better to look at and better to drive, it was instantly in with a chance. The only issues were a slight lack of practicality and the lack of a reliable, plentiful charging network. The charging network is not a quick fix – and it may well require some input from governments and the rest of the car industry before it becomes a realistic prospect – but the practicality side of things is much easier to sort. So Porsche built an off-road estate version called the Cross Turismo, which instantly solved the standard car’s problems with rear headroom and made the most of the already plentiful legroom. Unfortunately, jacking up the suspension and fitting some chunky plastic body cladding didn’t
do much for the Taycan’s sporty credentials, and that rather defeated the point. So Porsche took the Cross Turismo back to the workshop, lowered it, removed the cladding and created one of the most beautiful cars on the road today. It’s called the Taycan Sport Turismo, and it’s about as good as electric cars get. Going back to the height of the standard Taycan has revived some of the sportiness, making the Sport Turismo feel pretty much identical to the saloon car on which it is based. Unless you’re really putting it through its paces, there’s no difference in the way the car corners, accelerates or stops. And even if you do see any change, it’s barely perceptible. That means the Sport Turismo is absolutely brilliant to drive, despite its slightly numb steering. It’s very nearly as good, in fact, as the 911 sports car. Except it’s faster than the 911, because the first Sport Turismos to arrive in the UK will be the GTS models, which come with two electric motors and a massive 510bhp. Unless, of course, the car is in Sport Plus mode, in which case you get an even more incredible 590bhp. With power heading to all four wheels, the acceleration is instantaneous, and the GTS Sport Turismo gets from 0-62mph in a mere 3.7 seconds. It’s the sort of acceleration that makes overtaking outrageously simple. And to the outside world, at least, it all happens silently. But inside, Porsche has fitted this strange noise generation system that synthesises an engine sound. The GTS models – both saloon and estate – have their own particular noise, and it’s rubbish. It’s some horrible, hollow cross between a dodgem and an old MG sports car that adds nothing to the experience, apart from a moment’s concern that something might be broken. Fortunately, it only really comes into play in the sportier driving modes, so if you leave those alone you’ll be fine. Do that and you also unlock the ability to cover more than 300 miles on a single charge. Officially, the GTS Sport Turismo’s range is rated at 304 miles – only a handful fewer than the equivalent four-door Taycan – but slightly less powerful versions will likely go even further between trips to the plug. If you can find the right plug, charging from 5% to 80% takes less than 25 minutes, but a proper fill-up will take

Of course, winter weather will mean you can’t do as many miles as the official economy test suggests, but the same is true of any electric car. On my test drive, the car had around 200 miles of range to play with, despite the ever-present lure of that instant acceleration. It really is addictive, and it’s probably the biggest threat to hypermiling in the Taycan. But the battery isn’t the only bit of tech Porsche has fitted to the Sport Turismo. Like the standard Taycans, it comes with three touchscreens and a digital instrument display, but though they all work very well, that isn’t the impressive bit. Nope, Porsche has fitted a clever glass roof system that can be frosted at the tap of a screen, with liquid crystals in the glass allowing nine different panels to be switched on or off. That means
84
you can frost half the roof or any part of it, depending on what you and your passengers desire. Yes, it’s a gimmick, but with the dark roof lining of the GTS model, it’s one that’s well worth specifying – if only to lighten the mood inside. Whatever you think of the gimmicks, and whatever trim you choose, the Taycan Sport Turismo is my new favourite electric car. Admittedly, that’s a bit like describing my new favourite serial killer – I don’t really like any of them and I certainly don’t want one in my garage – but the Taycan Sport Turismo, along with the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT and the BMW i4, is one of the few electric cars I might allow onto my drive. As with any other electric vehicle, the lack of range and charging infrastructure means I’d still need a big petrol or diesel car for long distances, holidays and winter (preferably a Porsche Cayenne or Panamera), but for any journey shorter than about two hours – heading into town, the school run or the commute – the Taycan is perfect. It’s spacious, quiet and luxurious, and if you want a sporty car without the guilt that comes with a massive petrol engine, it’ll fill that brief too.

spa hydrotherapy and targeted pressure relief. Another popular swimming pool product for families and those with limited space is the movable floor. Moving floor pools can be adjusted to any height, or closed off completely, making them a safer alternative for households with children and pets. One moment they can be used as a yoga studio or workout space, and with a click of a button converted into a swimming pool. To complement your swimming pool, Guncast & KLAFS have a variety of thermal room designs, each made to measure and entirely customisable to suit each user’s taste. The InfraPlus sauna seats are designed for targeted pain relief actions for the neck, back and shoulders. Meanwhile, several accessories are available inlcuding the Salt Pro X, the very first portable microsalt device for people suffering from respiratory conditions. Saunas can be pre-set with ‘moods’; personalised light settings, music, temperature and humidity. Further enhancing the tranquil atmosphere and promoting mindfulness, temperature resistant LCD screens can also be installed inside saunas, displaying personalised pictures or videos to help customers feel truly relaxed while using their sauna. Also extending the thermal element beyond saunas and steam rooms, Guncast & KLAFS offer a full range of wellness products, including caldarium, mud bath, hamam, tepidarium, ice fountain, ice lounge, snow cabin and full-body cryotherapy cabin, each individually crafted and installed.
Meet the Experts Event Offering a chance for clients to take the first steps in realising their own dream wellness suite, Guncast & KLAFS are opening its doors from 23rd – 25th February 2022 to prospective clients, architects, landscape designers and developers. THE NORT ORTH HERN DESI SIG GN AWARD WARDS S Leading designers turn out in force for a celebration of northern talent
H
undreds of designers attended the Northern Design Award at the Concorde Exhibition & Conference Centre at Manchester Airport towards the end of last year for an evening dedicated to celebrating northern design talent. The event organisers expressed their delight at having the opportunity to bring together leading lights of the design world under one roof again after having to make the awards virtual due to the pandemic in 2020. Director of Events, Shelley Mears, said, “It was so rewarding to see this year’s event come together and it has absolutely been worth the wait!” The winners of the 2021 Northern Design Awards were chosen by judges including Linda Barker, former BIID President Elect Susie Rumbold, and George Bond. The awards are amongst the most established in the UK and have been held at a series of stunning venues across the north of England over the past 18 years, attracting many of the design world’s most recognisable figures. Linda Barker, who has helped to bring interior design into the mainstream throughout her career, said, “No longer are our creatives in the grip of London elitism - this event demonstrates that those in the north are every bit as important and vibrant as the capital’s fat cats!” Shelley Mears said that this year’s awards ceremony had left the organisers, as well as the nominees, feeling optimistic after a turbulent period for the industry,
90
saying, “It was marvellous to see people gathering and introducing themselves to new contacts. it’s what the awards are all about. Many will go on to work together and that’s just fantastic.” The awards, which were launched with a small event in 2003, have gone on to attract the attention of a host of well-known designers, who’ve highlighted how important it is to celebrate the success of the northern design scene. This year’s awards were supported by sponsors including Havwoods International, the British Institute of Interior Design and The Cheshire Magazine. A list of this year’s winners has been published on the Northern Design Awards website and organisers will reveal details of next year’s event over the coming months. Shelley Mears thanked all of the guests at this year’s awards, including the winners and judges, and thanked the Northern Design Awards sponsors for supporting the growth of the awards and helping to put talented northern design firms on the map. www.northerndesignawards.com

MY LIFE IN PROPERT Y LISA CURRAN, MANAGING DIRECTOR CURRANS HOMES AND CURRANS UNIQUE If you became the Housing Minister for a day, what would you change? I’d like to change the process of buying and selling. I’d seek to provide buyers and sellers with more certainty in order to take the stress out of the whole process. For instance, conveyancing seems to be taking more time at the moment than ever before. I’d like to streamline this service and provide movers with more certainty in order to reduce stress.
What inspired you to get into the property industry? My passion for property investment began during my time at university, when my sister set up Home Let in 1989. The moment I graduated and started my first job, I began saving up for deposits for flats. I saw property as a great way of achieving financial freedom. After I had bought my first few buy to lets, I met John. Together, we’ve been investing in property since the late 1990s. At the time I had my daughter Eva, 18 years ago, I was working long hours in corporate. It was a turning point, and I made the decision to move into property on a fuller scale, following my passion and also allowing me the flexibility to take care of Eva. What is the most satisfying part of your job? Meeting the most amazing people and helping them move to the next step of their lives. Allowing them to move on their own terms, it’s so rewarding. You meet a lot of people who are looking to downsize, but it’s all about the timing. Leaving it too late can compromise the experience of moving home. Really, it’s about more than a new house; these are pivotal life changes. There’s a sense of future-proofing to moving, so it’s really rewarding to see people making transitions in a calm and considered manner without change being forced upon them. What do you see as the biggest challenge facing estate and letting agents at the moment? Lack of supply. People want to move home, but often, they can’t find the home they want to move to. Trying to convince these homeowners to bring their property to the market with confidence is the biggest challenge.
What makes the perfect home for you? High ceilings, period elements, clean lines and a nice view of water or the countryside, in a village or central location. The meeting of period and contemporary can be done seamlessly now and can work so well. The combination of space, light (both natural and ambient uplighting), quality materials (right down to the light switches and sockets), nature (flowers inside or a view of the garden) and decoration. After a long working week, can you describe your average weekend? Definitely champagne, definitely on a boat on the River Dee and definitely family. Lots of family time, and probably quite a bit of work! What is your property prediction for 2022? I predict lots of cash buyers. I think we will see a continuation of the current trend of a lack of homes to buy, and that demand will continue to outstrip supply. I hope people can find the confidence to bring their properties to market and find their next home. Sometimes people are looking for a particular property, our VIP service helps them to source that property. We help to find that specific home. This can allow people to come to the market with the confidence that they can find what it is they need. www.curransunique.co.uk, www.curranshomes.co.uk

Re-Th e-Thiinking Constructi onstructio on with Free-Flowin ree-Flowing g Insulation The Cheshire Magazine talks to Daniel O’Connor, Director of Clockwork Screed to learn more about a fresh approach to home insulation
In a nutshell what is Thermal Lightweight Aggregate (TLA)? Thermal Lightweight Aggregate (TLA) is an innovative pourable insulation.
What are the benefits of having your home insulated this way? Our unique free flowing and self-levelling product ensures faster, more efficient installations and provides excellent thermal performance, enhanced compressive strength and an outstanding A2 fire rating. ‘energystore TLA®’ can be poured to any thickness, naturally absorbing any camber or unevenness in the existing floor or sub-base. Precise amounts are produced and poured on-site leaving no waste for customers to dispose of. Our floor solutions use up to
80% less cement than traditional concrete products and an entire project can be completed with just one vehicle, resulting in a marked reduction of CO2 impact on the environment.
Can residential homes replace current insolation with TLA? Yes. It is worth noting that our poured insulation helps to reduce heat loss/transfer more effectively than traditional PIR insulation boards. Not only is this more cost-effective, it also reduces energy waste and is therefore more environmentally friendly.

Homes and Interiors
Can you tell us about some recent projects you’ve worked on? In recent weeks, we have worked in Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales and Lancashire. We were delighted recently to help a client undertaking a large refurbishment of their home in Hale Barns with uneven subfloors and poor thermal values. Our poured insulation successfully addressed both of these issues and exceeded all target criteria. Once the underfloor heating had been installed in the property, we returned to provide our cementitious liquid screed throughout the ground floor.
Does your team work on bespoke projects? We are more than happy to undertake any type of project, big or small and can discuss individual requirements further on 0161 546 6945 or by email at contact@clockworkscreed.co.uk. Please visit our website for further information: www.clockworkscreed.co.uk

And Finally ... We love this cabinet of desires from Nika Zupanc. A piece of furniture with an iconic and powerful shape characterised by small compartments, each with its own key, which keep desires and secrets hidden. The project is also a contemporary reference to the sideboard, a largely forgotten piece of furniture characterised by a padlock and a key that was used to keep cookies and sweets out of the reach of children. The diversity of every desire that the cabinet expresses is elegantly rendered by the different copper finishes that represent the essence of De Castelli and its dedication to the material.
