he holiday season has arrived, so get your bags packed, put your shades on and enjoy our sun-drenched travel edition. To help you decide where to spend your summer vacation, our resident Travel Insider shares his hot holiday picks for the summer season (p.65) and we also talk to travel journalist and broadcaster Simon Calder (p.18), who shares his top tips on beach breaks, city stays and adventure holidays. We board a British Airways flight to the glorious Saint Lucia to enjoy the soothing waves and sandy white beaches of the island (p.74). For those looking for a break a little closer to home, we explore what Canary Wharf has to offer (p.70), stop in at 45 Park Lane in London (p.66) and take a look at the newly launched PoB Breaks that provides luxury stays in the Scottish Highlands all the way to the Channel Island of Jersey and everywhere in-between (p.71). As the sun shines down on Cheshire, we showcase our favourite ways to spend the summer days and nights on the water (p.27) and also take advice from one of the region’s leading garden designers, Rich Vernon, on creating the perfect outdoor oasis for entertaining at home (p.99). Staying in Cheshire, we meet two uber talented Cheshire based artists. Firstly, Jo Gough discusses her career success, influences and royal connection (p.24) and Deborah Moses, owner of The Silver Zebra Studio, talks us through some of her private commissions and fabulous new collections (p.102). Also this issue, we talk to Line of Duty and Motherland star, Anna Maxwell Martin, as she returns to our screens as MI5 interrogator Lily Thomas in ITV’s hottest new drama ‘A Spy Amongst Friends’ (p.32). Clare Stobart delves into the world of IV therapy (p.47), whilst James Fossdyke takes the new Lexus RZ for a spin (p.62) and we end this edition with Mulberry’s new collection of picnic essentials (p.110). Whether you’re poolside, beachside or enjoying this glorious weather at home, we hope you enjoy your precious lazy days of summer with this scorching hot read.

My life ... SIMON CALDER, FREELANCE TRAVEL JOURNALIST & BROADCASTER
How would you describe yourself ? Always on holiday but pretending to work. Where is home? Waterloo, south London, where I have lived for 36 years. And work? Anywhere. It’s great. I work across the UK media, including The Independent, the BBC and many other outlets What would you do to improve the area you live in? I love living in Waterloo because it is so central and I can easily get to most airports and train stations. However, I don’t live in the nice bit so I’d like to see some decent regeneration of its housing estates. Or at the very least, reduce traffic and assign more space to pedestrians. What did you want to be when you were younger? Older. I genuinely didn’t have any great vision, and blundered my way from one calamitous life choice to the next. What travel experience would you recommend for a special occasion? This year I’d recommend trying to see the Northern Lights, as they are expected to be spectacular this season (October to March). If you can’t make
“This year I’d recommend trying to see the Northern Lights, as they are expected to be spectacular this season” that, then, how about Alderey Edge: it’s always struck me as a slightly mystical place that’s also great for some serious walking (or rock climbing, if you prefer). Name a few of your favourite beach breaks From Cheshire, it has to be either Llandudno or Blackpool. I love them both, because each offers plenty more besides a bracing beach break. Further afield, I like Scarborough, Ballycastle in Northern Ireland and almost anywhere on the northwest coast of the Republic of Ireland. None of these has especially warm weather and seas guaranteed. If that’s important to you, try Tayrona National Park on the north coast of Colombia. What adventure holiday would you recommend? Climbing Aconcagua in Argentina – the highest peak outside the Himalayas. I did it in January 2014, and it was an astonishing feeling at the top to know I was the highest person in the world – because at that time of year in the
18
- A beach break? Tony Wheeler, co-founder of Lonely Planet, because after five minutes on the sun loungers we would be ready to sneak off and do some proper travelling. - An adventure holiday? Ben Fogle, who could get us out of all manner of scrapes. Himalayas, no one goes so high (6,961 metres). Slightly easier is a trip I took with the family on a truck between Zimbabwe and Namibia – there’s nothing like slow, overland travel. What city excites you? Panama City, the greatest capital in Central America: a Manhattan of the Pacific, yet with the ruins of the ancient Spanish city at Panama Vieja (now a Unesco World Heritage Site) and the Casco Viejo, the alluring “new” old town which is an excellent place to stay. Add in a trip along the Panama Canal – crossing the Continental Divide by boat, road or rail – and you will have enjoyed much of the best of Central America. Name a holiday companions you’d choose for… - A city break? Romesh Ranganathan. We both hail from Crawley (where, amazingly, we both became Maths teachers at the very schools we attended). Since we were effectively separated at birth, I reckon we’ll get on well.
“Always on holiday but pretending to work.”
What travel experience is on your bucket list? Almost anywhere in central and west Africa, as well as Nepal. What or who inspires you? Arriving in a new city or country. What was the last gift you gave someone? A bottle of wine. Which I then proceeded to help drink. Tell us a secret/fun fact? My special power is identifying the country of origin of a car from the font and layout of the registration number. Maybe I should get out more. Who or what would you place in room 101? A sheer drop: I have a profound fear of heights. Your mastermind subject? Concorde. Literally, that was my Mastermind subject when I competed last. What’s been your biggest life lesson? Always ask. simoncalder.co.uk @SimonCalder on Twitter

Work of Art Cheshire based artist Jo Gough on her career success, influences and royal connection
After a professional IT career of 30 years at Cheshire West and Chester Council you followed your passion and entered into the creative world. What was the turning point? I took a practical career path at the council and continued to indulge in my passion for art in my spare time. At first, I did this for self enjoyment but as friends and family started to make requests, I soon realised I had the potential to earn a living doing what I loved. In 2013, I was asked to paint the iconic Liverpool waterfront and the compliments were overwhelming. This was a pivotal turning point for me as I embraced this new genre of painting buildings and landmarks. Having worked in Chester for three decades, I have a deep connection with the city’s history, culture, and spirit. This intimate knowledge enabled me to capture the essence of Chester’s landmarks, incorporate local elements, and infuse my work with a genuine sense of love and admiration for this remarkable city.
You create beautiful prints, using vibrant colours and flowers. Talk us through your creative process, what are your biggest artistic influences? Nature, flowers and hearts are wonderful sources of inspiration for artistic expression. My work embodies a harmonious blend of realism and abstraction, inviting viewers to delve into the layers of meaning within each piece. My love for colour allows me to infuse
my artwork with vibrancy, energy, and a sense of liveliness. Bold and vibrant colours create a visually striking impact and I’m passionate about spreading positivity through my art. I am constantly pushing the boundaries of my creativity and my journey as an artist has been a continuous exploration and experimentation. I primarily work with acrylic paint applied to various size canvases. I like to play with different techniques like blending, splattering, or layering to add depth and visual interest to my artwork.
Talk us through your recent collaboration with Chester Zoo. After painting a number of animal commissions, I found painting animals deeply rewarding. I made contact with Chester Zoo’s retail product manager and was commissioned to paint a bespoke animal range drawing inspiration from their zoo animals and the wonderful array of wildflowers growing in their gardens that support the local wildlife. From a cute baby elephant to a sluggish sloth hanging in a tree, their collection was a labour of love and my prints are on sale in their gift shop and online store (gifts.chesterzoo.org).
What’s your royal connection? This photograph of the Queen admiring one of my Windsor Castle coasters was 24
taken during her royal visit to Chester in June 2018. Unbeknown to me, a friend was in the crowd during the visit with one of my coasters in hand. As the Queen drew near, she held out the coaster and the Queen stopped, studied the image of her royal residence and thanked my friend for her gift. The moment was captured on camera and it’s a picture I will treasure for ever. I often wondered whether she used it at home for her cup of tea!
Your designs have been picked up by publisher Portfolio Cards and your greetings cards are now sold in WHSmith stores across the UK. How does that feel and do you have any other projects lined up? Being signed by Portfolio Cards, was a significant achievement and something I am very proud of. It’s an amazing opportunity to showcase my work and provides excellent exposure as my cards are sent around the world! Another major project is working with market leading contemporary art publisher The Art Group. To be recognised as an artist by such a prestigious art publisher affirms my artwork has reached a level of quality and appeal that is deserving of public attention and recognition. Dubai is my next exciting venture as I partner with a friend who lives out there to launch Jo Gough Art UAE. jogoughart.com

NSPCC Manchester Fashion Show Midland Hotel, Manchester This year’s Manchester Fashion Show raised nearly £17,000 for the NSPCC. Hosted by Brooke Vincent, the sold-out event saw 140 people enjoy an afternoon of fashion and glamour at the Midland Hotel in Manchester. Dame Joanna Lumley threw her support behind the event, filming a video that was shown on the day. As well as the display of clothes, attendees enjoyed live music and a two-course meal. They also took part in an array of fundraising including a live auction and star prize draw. Fashion firms Black White Denim and Bow & Bo worked with the NSPCC to put on the show, which was sponsored by estate agents Knight Frank and finance advisors Rosebridge. Bev Brocklehurst, NSPCC Community Fundraiser for the North West, said: “The Manchester Fashion Show was yet again a fantastic event and we are so thrilled to have raised so much money for the NSPCC. A Spy Amon mongg Friien Fr end ds Anna Maxwell Martin returns to our screens as MI5 interrogator Lily Thomas in ITV’s hottest new drama based on the best-selling book written by Ben Macintyre
B
ased on the New York Times best-selling book written by Ben Macintyre, the six episode ITV series dramatises the true story of Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby, two British spies and lifelong friends. Philby was the most notorious British defector and Soviet double agent in history. This is a story of intimate duplicity; of loyalty, trust and treachery. Philby’s deeply personal betrayal, uncovered at the height of the Cold War, resulted in the gutting of British and American Intelligence. Motherland and Line of Duty actress Anna Maxwell Martin plays Lily Thomas, a debriefer for the domestic security service, MI5. A working-class woman from the north of England, she is a fish out of water in Elliott and Philby’s world of secrets and gentlemen’s clubs.
What first attracted you to A Spy Among Friends? It was about the people really before I read the actual project. I knew of the director Nick Murphy and his work, which was excellent. And Alexander Cary, who is our writer and showrunner, is incredibly talented - a brilliant writer, a brilliant showrunner and he’d been on Homeland. And because Damian Lewis originated the show with Alex he was obviously attached to it. So it was the people before anything else, and then I read it and the part was just so good.
Were you already familiar with the true story behind the show? Yes, I was a bit. actually. I know a member of the Philby family and my late husband was obsessed with Ben Macintyre’s book and with spying and 32
As a fictitious character, what does she add to the show?
prisoner of war camps and that kind of thing, so we had all these books in the house. I hadn’t read them but after I got the part, I delved into them.
How would you describe Lily as a character and her role in the narrative? She’s really tenacious and she’s very front-footed without being demonstratively so. She’s very clever, she is incredibly good at her job and reading a situation and adapting and doing what she’s supposed to do, which is extracting information from people. That’s what she’s exceptionally good at and I think probably she’s sent in because they think she’ll be disregarded. And actually, what’s nice about the relationship between her and Elliott is that they disregard one another at first, then as the story unfolds they have a newfound respect for one another.
She’s sort of instrumental to it. Alex talks about this so I’m not blowing my own trumpet by saying it. He talks about needing to invent a character as a way into the narrative. He came up with Lily because he had to have someone who could interrogate Elliott and his version of events, so he could see it unfold through his eyes.
Is playing fictional characters more freeing for you as an actress? I’ve played lots of real people and I can’t think that I’ve ever felt particularly stifled by playing a real person as opposed to a not-real person. You don’t think of it in those terms. You just serve your writer, really, and the character you’re playing. So it’s irrelevant whether they’re real or not real. You just have to have specificity in what you’re doing, be active in all the scenes, listen and respond, and do it according to who you’re playing. 33
How was it filming those intense interrogation scenes with Damian? I love all that. I feel like I’ve done a proper day’s work whilst also having a laugh with a lovely crew and lovely people. I relish it. It’s the same as it was on Line of Duty as well. I just think ‘Oh my God there’s loads of pages of chatting away’. I mean, as an actor why wouldn’t you love it? With Lily, she wants to be the victor in that room. She wants to go back to her bosses with all the information, so she’s trying to find every single tactic to outmanoeuvre him. It’s just brilliant to play a part like that and do those scenes. It’s a total gift for an actor.
Why do you think audiences love a good spy story? I think we love suspense, we love jeopardy, and I think that what we really need in storytelling is simply a good story. And so often that is there with a spy story. That said, the spy story here is a hook, really. It’s
34
brilliantly written by Alex and delivered by Nick, and pivotally it’s about a relationship between Philby and Elliott and the relationship between Elliot and Lily and what they are and what they mean. Most importantly, I suppose, is that relationship between Philby and Elliott, which is incredibly complex and it’s about two men who have to re-evaluate who they are. I think that’s what the story is really about. It’s like a bromance gone horribly wrong. It’s a heartbreak, you know? It’s a sort of heartbreak story for me rather than a spy story.
What did you most enjoy about playing Lily? It’s really great to play a part like Lily. She’s an absolute badass and they are the best people to play. She’s a badass with a heart, who has a journey, and that’s the best thing. But really the best thing is always if you’re on a nice set with nice people and they’re good fun and kind. That set was that at a difficult time in my life and they really were the loveliest, kindest, funniest people to be around. You can play a great character but you don’t want to be surrounded by horrible people while you’re doing it. So as I say, there’s the part and then there’s the people, which is probably often more important for me than anything else. And they were talented. They were so brilliant, funny, kind and so mega-talented. It was one of the most talented crews I’ve ever worked with. Every department was just incredible. We had a lovely time. constellation of places that spark emotions – this is what Mexico is to Maria Grazia Chiuri. A “place of the soul,” just as it was for surrealist artists. The emblematic figure of Frida Kahlo continues to offer a powerful connection to this culture, celebrated at the heart of the Dior Cruise 2024 collection. The Mexican artist transcended her body through her clothes, which became representation, proclamation, protest, and affirmation. Like a precious jewel case for a broken body, a cocoon-case concealing a butterfly meta-morphed into a motif unfolding

in multiple shades and forms, through a series of prints. The captivating beauty of fragility is further enhanced by the variety of cotton, hemp and silk lace selected, by the meticulous designs of the collars sublimating jersey and black velvet, and by irresistibly precious jacquards. For this new line Maria Grazia Chiuri has once again forged strong ties with local artisans: original embroideries, co-creations crafted with their ateliers, notably adorn dresses and shirts. The story of a femininity that is constructed by a relationship with the natural environment, in a balance of engagement and light-heartedness.

S
an Carlo has been a staple of the Liverpool restaurant scene since 2009, which is an amazing achievement by any standard. With its classic luxury Italian format, it clearly has lasted the test of time. This year the Liverpool venue has gone through a major £3.5m renovation, offering a spectacularly opulent and contemporary take on Italian dining with elegant interiors inspired by Grand Milanese villas and gardens. The impressive 211 cover restaurant includes a new feature bar area where customers are able to enjoy post dinner drinks and late lounge music on Friday and Saturday nights. The former bank vault is now The Rosa Room – a spectacular private dining room with its own bar on the lower ground floor, perfect for those birthday or special party celebrations. The grand reopening has seen the return of San Carlo’s traditional Italian menu with the signature favourites making a comeback, alongside some new introductions. On arrival we were in awe of the new refurbishment, it really wows! We were greeted by Vanessa at the bar who is an absolute credit to the front of house team. Vanessa was warm and friendly and as it was a really hot summer's day, she suggested
we started with a limoncello spritz – this sweet citrusy long drink cooled us down immediately and was a great recommendation. After relaxing and chatting at the bar we were moved to our table in the main restaurant to review the new menu –and boy were we spoilt for choice. It’s clear to see how San Carlo have stayed the distance as there were so many things that we wanted to try it will require many visits to try them all. We opted to try the Burrata al Pomodoro and Gamberoni Luciana, both were so elegantly presented but the prawns cooked in a buttery chilli sauce were the standout here, extra bread required to unapologetically mop up the remaining delicious sauce. For mains we went with the Pollo Diavola (pan-fired chicken breast with Nduja sausage and tomato sauce) and the Agnello Toscana (lamb cutlets with Barolo red wine, rosemary and sun-blushed tomato sauce) which had a buttery texture and the sauce was so rich and complimented the lamb so well – I would highly recommend this dish. We also ordered a side of sautéed potatoes with rosemary and pancetta – boy were these great - do not miss out on these and make sure you order them when you
eat here. James our waiter offered up some great recommendations for wine, we went with a Vermentino Di Gallura – this was a robust smooth white with hints of rosemary and peach, which complimented the dishes we ordered perfectly. On to dessert – we were going to skip this as we were starting to get full, however, we saw the table next to us having desserts which looked so good that we were swayed. We went with the classic Tiramisu, which didn’t disappoint; rich, sweet and punchy amaretto and coffee flavour and the Millefoglie; crisp layers of puff pastry layered with set Chantilly cream which was an absolute favourite. Our visit to San Carlo was so enjoyable, it felt as though along with the refurbishment the service and the food had also been refreshed and we couldn’t fault it. The staff were so warm and welcoming and really made the experience special. It’s clear to see that San Carlo will continue to be a stalwart of the Liverpool restaurant scene and I for one can’t wait for our next visit. sancarlo.co.uk 57

Mermaiding in the Med Mermaiding is surfacing as the trend of summer 2023 as the magic of The Little Mermaid movie takes the world by storm. A water activity using a single flipper, Mermaiding allows you to feel like a mermaid or a merman and encourages you to improve your water skills. Where better to try your hand at this trend than at one of The Little Mermaid’s filming locations in Sardinia, the breath-taking Cala Moresca. Hotel Abi d’Oru, located at the gateway of Costa Smeralda, is set on Marinella Beach, one bay over from Cala Moresca. This season they are offering the opportunity to immerse oneself into the world of The Little Mermaid, with a Mermaiding package taking guests to the film’s locations. Once there, guests are invited to don gleaming swimmable mermaid tails and feel the metamorphosis as they step into character. The trend of Mermaiding brings fantasy to life and offers an exciting escape from the ordinary. hotelabidoru.it

T he Tra Tr a vel Insid Insi d er Phil Aird-Mash shares his hot holiday picks for the summer season
F
rom golden sandy beaches to beautiful sunsets and blue waters warmed by long sunny days, there’s nothing better than a summer holiday. So, I thought I’d share some of my travel highlights for this year’s season. In the Caribbean, the summer months are something of a hidden secret for certain islands. Outside of the winter travel peak, you can escape the crowds and still enjoy plenty of sunshine in Barbados. At this time of year, you can find excellent offers and lower hotel rates at some of the finest resorts. Beyond the powder-sand beaches, you can add special touches to your stay, from private tastings in authentic rum distillers to vibrant cricket matches and sunset cruises. For a short-haul summer holiday, Europe is always a wonderful option. UNIWORLD CRUISES SS LA VENEZIA
LAKE GARDA
SANDY LANE BEACH, BARBADOS
Don’t just limit yourself to one hotel stop, though. Europe offers plenty of tailor-made experiences. I love the idea of a river cruise through the lagoons of Venice before taking the high-speed train to Verona to explore the city. It’s then an easy journey on to Lake Garda, where you can unwind with stunning mountain views. Meanwhile, Finland is an amazing place for summer activities and experiences – it’s not just about winter! Enjoy everything from beautiful lakeside walks to traditional brewery tours and foraging for fresh berries. The midnight sun offers beautiful wildlife spotting opportunities too, including elusive brown bears, sightings of which are almost guaranteed between April and September. Wellness fans will also love the sauna culture – the perfect way to relax after a day of hiking.
So, with the summer holidays fast approaching, don’t delay when it comes to booking. As always, our Travel Specialists are here to help if you’re looking for inspiration or expert advice on tailoring your next travel experience. inspiringtravel.co.uk

Meet the
Hotelier LEE KELLY, GENERAL MANAGER AT 45 PARK LANE, DORCHESTER COLLECTION
What are the benefits of your location? As our name suggests, we are located in the heart of Mayfair on Park Lane, right opposite Hyde Park and a stone’s throw away from the buzz of the city. Our location allows guests to experience all London has to offer, with just a short walk/ drive. Whether that may be shopping on Bond Street, the shows on the West End or a little further the museums in South Kensington.
What is the most luxurious suite in the hotel? Our most luxurious suite is The Penthouse Terrace Suite which covers the entirety of the top floor and has breathtaking panoramic 360° views of Hyde Park. With a separate living and dining room, this is a beautiful suite that feels like home. Art Deco in design, but contemporary in attitude, the room is polished with modern luxury. It is very popular among our guests, especially in the summer when guests can make the most of the wrap-around balcony.
What can you tell us about the history of the hotel? 45 Park Lane has lived various lives, including one particularly glamorous adventure as The Playboy Club. Nicknamed ‘the hutch on the park’ this was a fashionable 1960s hangout for London’s rich and famous. Originally designed as an office building by famed Bauhaus architect
Walter Gropius, it remains a landmark of London, and today, a treasured gem of Dorchester Collection
Could you tell us about the best event the hotel has hosted during your time there? This past June 2023 two of the world’s most legendary chefs came together to host a unique culinary experience. For one night only, internationally renowned celebrity chef, Wolfgang Puck cooked with Alain Ducasse at CUT at 45 Park Lane. The pair teamed up to create a gastronomic fusion of excellence, with each chef presenting alternate dishes to complete a tasting menu. The evening took guests on a culinary journey with exceptional pairings made to highlight the dishes created by these leading chefs. Both chefs were accompanied by their award-winning teams, with Pucks headed by executive chef, Elliott Grover at 45 Park Lane and Ducasse’s, led by Jean-Phillippe Blondet, executive chef at Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester.
How would you describe the hotel’s dining experience? At the hotel, we now have two restaurants. The first is CUT by Wolfgang Puck which is a fine dining American steak restaurant. It has the most vibrant blend of 66
a succulent menu, sleek design and fascinating artwork by Damien Hirst. Executive chef Elliott Grover offers a fresh take on the menu and celebrates locally sourced ingredients thanks to a close relationship with producers. We like to do new things at CUT, from four hands chef dinners to a new Beverly Hills Brunch, it really is non-stop there. Elliott also serves food in our art-deco BAR 45 as well as the lounge at the spa, both are slightly adapted to reflect the environment and preferences at each. More recently, we launched Sushi Kanesaka on July 1, 2023; an intimate and traditional 13-seater Omakase counter restaurant opened at the hotel. Housed behind a discreet doorway off BAR 45, the restaurant brings the mastery of Edomae sushi in its most traditional, purest form – to London, setting a new benchmark for Omakase dining in the city.
Of all the facilities the hotel offers, which is your favourite and why? We have a great state-of-the-art spa at 45 Park Lane with a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and hydro pool. The lounge area is the most relaxing place to just unwind and the whole area is definitely up there in terms of my favourites. However, my favourite place has to be BAR 45; it has such a comfortable feel, thanks to the Art Deco interiors, cosy armchairs and library feel. Our bar manager Enrico Perri and his team prepare some of the best cocktails in London many of them inspired by the hotel’s Art Deco heritage. We also have a rotating art programme, meaning we have new exhibitions totally transform the walls of the bar every 2-3 months our most recent exhibition featured Hormazd Narielwalla who created a body of work to commemorate HM King Charles III’s coronation. Up next, we have Jo Hummel who will be showcasing her collection ‘Somewhere here, but far away’ from July 6th to September 3rd. Her exhibition will showcase the Isle of Wight which is perfect for this time of year and will give guests a glimpse into British geography.
What makes a stay at your venue stand out from your competitors? Our art and food offering makes us stand out the most. We have always
prided ourselves in being firmly rooted in the arts at 45 Park Lane. The exhibitions that we have hosted since opening have featured a real variety of exceptional talent, from up-and-coming artists through to big names of the art world. We are so honoured to have hosted works from David Bailey’s and Sir Peter Blake which has really driven interest in the property. The hotel will see a more interactive experience playing out across our exhibition programme. CUT at 45 Park Lane continues to be one of the most popular steak restaurants in London and we were recently voted 12th best steak restaurant in the world by World’s Best Steak Restaurant. Our executive chef, Elliott Grover, has also made it one of the first Wolfgang Puck restaurants to introduce a variety of fish dishes to the menu, now being rolled out across the company. We also launched CUT Out in 2020, our outdoor terrace and extension of CUT. Situated directly adjacent to the restaurant on the corner of Park Lane and Curzon Street, is accessible through the hotel’s main entrance and is open daily for lunch and dinner from 12pm. The terrace offers an additional 22 seats with a Captain’s Table, inspired by the glamorous mid-century design of a Riva yacht, which can accommodate up to six guests. The space is overlooked by the trees of Hyde Park and a sleek, frameless glazed screen creates a shelter for this light-flooded dining area, which mirrors the architectural design of 45 Park Lane. It’s the perfect oasis in the heart of Mayfair and the ideal location to enjoy our newly launched Beverly Hills Brunch. 2023 has already been an exciting year for us and we look forward to enhancing our food and beverage offering even further. dorchestercollection.com
– Our Experience – We have visited many London hotels but have to say 45 Park Lane is one of the best. We entered the wonderful art deco designed reception area to check in and were shown to our suite overlooking Park Lane. The suite was very generous in size making this a perfect place to stay for a long period. In the suite, there was a lovely dining area where we enjoyed our breakfast in the morning, a lounge area to relax in, a separate bedroom and two bathrooms. We dined in CUT Restaurant the popular steak house on the ground floor and it did not disappoint. The steak was divine and so was the glass of red! In the morning we enjoyed the spa, which is located lower ground floor creating a perfect peaceful oasis, a great way to start our day before heading back to Cheshire.

F ind yo your Trib Tribe K AT H A N N ON E N J OY E D A W EEKEND EXPLORING CANARY W HARF
C
anary Wharf is like an island, contrasting between glass and foliage. It has been beautifully designed, much green thought has been put into the layout of the Wharf and it makes for a lovely walkabout. I am particularly drawn to glass and the sky, the light reflecting, but in addition, the water below adds its own glorious elements to the vision of Canary Wharf. Like NYC, alongside the hustle and bustle and in between the docks, you have Jubilee Park, with tall trees, sculpture art, bagels, coffee and people strolling the scenic route with their families. To all you big city travellers, I’d highly recommend a stay in Canary Wharf, taking a wander, and getting a feel for this new London vibe. Away from the old city, Canary Wharf and the East London area has a lot to offer.
Feels Like June My stay in Canary Wharf was at Tribe Hotel, a really easy location to get to and around The Wharf. I had the pleasure of breakfast and dinner in Feels Like June. The ground floor restaurant is laced with super cool Florida interior vibes and chilled background music making it relaxed and pretty to sit in. They had fabulous coffee which of course made my morning and the cocktails were sublime. I tried this really quirky cocktail with cheese and it blew my mouth away. The food was beautiful with an American feel but with their own twist on the dishes. Feels Like June is also dog friendly! It’s a real treat to be able to dine with your fury loved one. They had some ace street photography books lying around too, which I - of course - had a good look through whilst sipping my
70
evening wine. Overall, I think Feels Like June is the kind of place you could brunch in with your gal pals or have a dinner date, a real all-day kind of place.
Food and Drinks in Abundance The whole trip was a real treat as I was able to try a few restaurants out for you guys to work out who did what and well. Burgers? Uou got it at Patty & Bun, the sweetest burger dining concept with the most delicious petite but tasty and filling burger ever, perfection. We ate at Emilia’s Pasta, a super friendly Italian filled with classic dishes. The much-needed homely meals were super tasty and they shared some very cool information about their ethics on sourcing their meat and cheese. They had pieces of pasta for straws, why isn’t everyone doing this? Because quite frankly paper straws do not cut it. Looking at more high-end evening dining we tried the best Indian food at Chai Ki, I have ever had in my life. Chai Ki is situated on the north side of the Wharf and underneath the Roof Top Gardens. I was so glad I had walked so many steps that day that I was able to consume every flavour that was laid in front of me. Chai Ki alone is a reason to visit Canary Wharf. The table host was so helpful to us all, making sure we had variety but also catering for those not too keen on meat and our none meat eaters. We had, and I’m sure the gang would agree, an incredible dining experience at Chai Ki. The Hawksmoor Wood Wharf is a floating restaurant. I knew this was going to be double good because one of my besties, Darreul, has been living in London for 20
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Travel
years and his knowledge of London is purely based around good food. On learning of my trip, he had mentioned this restaurant to me and so I knew it was a must-visit. On my last day, I went along and spent a lovely small fortune. They had all the best wine to match the burger and my scallops all with free, pretty, waterside views. So what else is there to do around Canary Wharf and East London? Further east (we took a cab) we experienced Thin Air, a truly inspirational installation of work that is dependent on space and light and sound, really open the mind and tapped into our senses on another scale. On the Wharf itself are art installations dotted around. A beautiful feature mentioned earlier but in not in any detail is the Crossrail Place Rooftop Garden. I thoroughly enjoyed walking through this green space, especially, given the location in a city area, there’s something calming about the experience, but they have an unexpected feature here; the Short Story Station. You select the minutes you wish to spend reading and it dispenses a short story that will (roughly) take that time to read. A delectable read and in an enchanting location. Fun stuff around the Wharf include floating boats hot tubs and BBQ’s! I thought ‘Well thats going to be
a blast”, and I saw some brave folk (it was March when I visited) in beachwear with a beer in hand. And north of the Wharf - and for those of you into your history - the Museum of London Docklands. A huge conversion of what was a real dock mill and now exhibits and imitates life in the docks over hundreds of years. Across the way from the museum, and I’d say more of an early evening activity is Fair Game. An indoor funfair which surprisingly triggered the competitive nature in me, and they do bangin’ cocktails! Rightly so, the O2 is the most obvious location to highlight as Canary Wharf sits right on its doorstep. You are a stone’s throw away from one of the world’s largest and most popular music and event venues, with an easy ride from A to B on the Jubilee Line. Connecting to this epic venue is not an issue and takes around 11 mins door to door.
Final Thoughts Do you know why I’d choose to stay at Canary Wharf? Because although it’s wonderful to see the old historical city of London if you’re from the UK then you’ve most likely been many, many times. Admittedly I am drawn into the new, and impressed by the tall and the mighty. Canary Wharf is but a stone’s throw away from old London. With all the perks that East London and the O2 have to offer that I’d be sure to venture here again. tribehotels.com 71

But have you taken in Devon’s two coastlines and brace of national parks on the same trip? You may feel that you’ve ‘done’ Cornwall, the Cotswolds and Cumbria but why not tarry a while and discover new aspects of these destinations, enjoying the local culture, food and experiences as well as the honeypot sights? To help you delve a little further into the wonders of our
nation, PoB Hotels has launched PoB Breaks, a series of immersive journeys covering everywhere from the Scottish Highlands to the Channel Island of Jersey. An interactive map on the PoB Hotels website lets you plan your adventure at your own pace. As well as showing PoB Hotels, with their great food and beautiful bedrooms, it details local activities and experiences, from coasteering in Wales to a sunset river cruise in the Dedham Vale, on the Essex/Suffolk border. It’s easy to use – you just decide where you want to travel, then plan your route depending on how long you want to spend in each place. For some inspiration, take a look at the dozen curated breaks they’ve compiled. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a foodie, spa lover, a culture vulture or want to get active in the big outdoors. You can follow the suggested itineraries in full or just use the segments you find most appealing, adding your own ideas to make your perfect road trip. On your travels, by all means tick off the key sites, but take time to enjoy other experiences too. Go fishing at Scaling Dam Reservoir in the Yorkshire Moors before exploring Castle Howard
or enjoy wine tasting at Gusbourne, one of the finest winemakers in Kent, after taking in the macabre history of Canterbury Cathedral. Connecting with the locals is part of the adventure. So, in the pretty Cornish village of St Mawes, chat to the fishermen selling their catch at the quay as well as enjoying some of the freshest of seafood in a local restaurant. Or join a forager on the hunt for food growing in the wild in Perthshire and visit a smokehouse to find out more about the artisan craft. PoB Breaks include details of the best time to visit as well, depending on whether you want to take in the Henley Regatta in June or to see the Scottish snowdrop festival from late January to early March. Wherever you go, take your time and dare to dawdle – you see so much more when you live life in the slow lane. pobhotels.com 73

O
ur British Airways flight from Gatwick to Hewanorra International Airport in Saint Lucia was a comfortable 8 hours and 30 minutes. On board, we were greeted by a warm British welcome from the friendly crew, who were attentive throughout the journey. It really was a case of sitting down, relaxing and enjoying the journey, which included some quality onboard catering. This was our first time on the island, and we had booked our visit after hearing glowing reviews from a number of friends about how special it was. From the moment we landed we were greeted by a friendly lady, who escorted us to our transport that was waiting to take us to East Winds, our chosen resort. This was a transfer like no other. Our driver, Willet, unveiled his inner tour guide and spent the full hour-and-a-half journey to the resort pointing out interesting locations and sharing some of the island’s history. We even stopped so we could taste some street food, a simple cheese baguette that had been cooked in an outdoor stove along with a bottle of Piton, the local beer of Saint Lucia, which were welcomed and enjoyed. Upon arrival at East Winds, we were shown to our villa, situated right on the beach with the most breathtaking views. Instantly you felt relaxed and we knew from that moment this was going to be a very special break and we were not wrong. East Winds is a boutique resort with just 30 rooms in Caribbean style cottages set in extensive tropical gardens and overlooking a storybook beach on the west coast of Saint Lucia. The resort also features a yoga pavilion offering complimentary yoga and pilates classes, a spa that uses fresh ingredients

from the garden, an outdoor fitness trail and indoor fitness centre, swimming pool, restaurants and bars. After a much-needed evening of rest, we woke up to the view of the ocean which was just as special as when we arrived. Breakfast was on the beach, and the team genuinely want you to have the best time during your stay and this shows throughout every interaction they have. From day one they know your name and where your preference of seating is. As this was our first day, we chose to explore the hotel. Although we were told the hotel was at full capacity it did not feel this way as the resort is so vast and there were always quiet areas to relax in. We chose the hammock area and after mastering getting on and off the hammock a little more elegantly than our first attempt, we decided to go and try paddle boarding which was a lot harder than it looks! John was surprisingly impressive whilst I perfected the sitting down and paddling position. Our afternoon was spent by the pool with cocktails before getting ready for our evening meal which was a BBQ using fresh fish caught that day! A fabulous end to our first day. We had been advised that the aerial tram over the rainforest was a ‘must-do’ experience for visitors, so we headed over to Rainforest Adventures. On arrival, we realised just how popular the island was, full of mainly British and American tourists. We were given the option of choosing either a zip wire - of which there were various heights to appeal to different
76
people - and the more relaxed option of the aerial tram, which we choose. The tram took us slowly right up to the top of the rainforest and back down again, where you could take in the most spectacular views of the island. If you’re not good with heights, I’d avoid, as it takes you up as far as 120 feet! An absolutely amazing experience. Another ‘must’ we had been advised to try was a cookery class by a local chef, which we also did during our trip. This brings a smile to my face even now remembering the day as I type. Orlando was our chef, showing us how to cook local Saint Lucian food; fish cakes to start followed by jerked chicken and then a baked grapefruit. And of course, washed down with the local Saint Lucian rum. This was one of our favourite days on the island and we have since tried recreating

the dishes at home, however, it’s not quite the same without the sun and hearing the laughter of Orlando. The island has so much to offer every traveller no matter your age or whether you like to relax or be active on holiday, so we decided to try another resort and experience. Situated between the Pitons is one of the most prestigious hotels on the island is Sugar Beach which offered luxury in abundance. We sought seclusion in one of their mountain villas with our own private pool and a team of butlers that attended to our every need. The resort is spread across more than one hundred acres of tropical forest unsurpassed for its natural beauty, with the only white sand beaches in the area. Formerly a working sugar plantation, the property has a long history of owners including Lord Glenconner, famously known for his friendship with Princess Margaret, and as the proprietor of the Bang Restaurant. The resort is currently owned by the Green family. The Greens have considerable experience in the leisure industry, being former shareholders of the Maybourne Group, owners of The Connaught, The Berkeley and Claridges in London. They are beneficial owners of The Hamilton Princess and Beach Club. Viceroy has managed the property since 2008. Whilst on this side of the island we decided to visit the Sulphur Springs, the only drive-through volcano in the
world! Not only did we walk up and see the volcano we also got to experience the springs - a magical mud bath - which worked wonders on our skin. We enjoyed a final day of relaxation at Sugar Beach with a visit to The Rainforest Spa. The spa offers 10 treatment rooms (8 treehouse-style gazebos), a wet room with manicure and pedicure facilities, a relaxation pavilion, and an earthen Amerindian steam dome— known as a temazcal—which reconnects the spa to the island’s earliest settlers. A perfect way to end such an incredible trip and prepare us for our journey back home the following day. Saint Lucia has left us with memories that will last a lifetime, we cannot wait to visit again! It’s worth noting that every Friday evening there is a street party in Gros Islet where you can taste the local cuisine and party until the early hours with fellow visitors and locals, a unique and special experience that everyone who visits should enjoy. stlucia.org britishairways.com www.eastwinds.com www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/sugar-beach

To the casual observer, the two cars look much the same, but the newcomer has a new and more luxurious interior that aims to right the wrongs of the old DB11’s cabin. That means there’s an all-new touchscreen infotainment system with a fresh navigation system and mobile phone connectivity, but Aston has retained physical switches for the climate control and gear selection buttons. High-end materials have also been used extensively throughout the cabin.
80
As with the DB11, the DB12’s power comes from a Mercedes-AMG-sourced 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, which is twin-turbocharged to produce 671bhp. All that power goes to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which allows the car to get from 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds. At full chat, it’ll do 202mph. But Aston Martin claims there’s more to the DB12 than straight-line speed, fitting clever chassis technology in a bid to ensure this is the “sharpest” ‘DB’ model yet. As before, there’s also a choice of drive modes that allow drivers to choose whether they want the car to feel sportier or more comfortable, depending on the road conditions. BMW’s designers don’t always make headlines for the right reasons – particularly with some of the brand’s more recent creations – but we thought we’d offer some credit where it’s due. The BMW Concept Touring Coupe is one of the best-looking cars we’ve seen in the past few years, so naturally, it will never make it into production. It’s simply a Z4-based concept car, designed to show off BMW’s capabilities. The classic shooting brake body and the upmarket materials of the cabin will never make it to any showroom in Cheshire, but it serves as a stylish reminder that BMW can still do great things when it puts its mind to it. GRAND DESIGNS The Jeep name is synonymous with off-roading, but it also considers itself to be a luxury brand. Which is why it has just launched a new Grand Cherokee with a low-emission plug-in hybrid powertrain and a bold price tag. Starting at just under £70,000, the Grand Cherokee is more expensive than a Porsche Cayenne, and Jeep justifies that with huge amounts of technology and luxury. And, of course, there’s Jeep’s trademark off-road capability. Despite the weight and the power, Jeep is adamant the Grand Cherokee can still cut it over rough terrain. Lexus might not be known as a leader when it comes to electric vehicles, writes James Fossdyke, but with a few tweaks, the new RZ could become a class leader
H
onesty would appear to be a vastly underrated quality these days. From Instagram filters to political spin and from cold-calling scams to fraudulent corporations, we seem to live on a diet of lies, halftruths and deceit. And we swallow it all. Politicians appear bulletproof no matter what their crimes, social media influencers continue to have influence even when their content is entirely paid for and big businesses are still getting away with murder – sometimes literally. It feels as though we’re so regularly exposed to marketing, spin and utter rubbish that we’re somehow desensitised to it. So it’s quite refreshing when a big corporation freely admits the shortfalls of its business and its products. That’s what Lexus has done with the new RZ. It’s only the brand’s second electric vehicle, following the much smaller UX, and it’s a smartly styled SUV designed to compete with the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Volkswagen ID.5. Lexus admits it’s late to the party – for a brand that’s such a leader in hybrid powertrains, the reluctance to spearhead the electric revolution is remarkable – but the company’s bosses admit they’re slightly cautious when it comes to battery technology, and they don’t want to release half-baked cars simply to steal a march on other brands. Instead, it’s happy to let the product do the talking, and initial impressions are very good indeed. The RZ looks great, with its sharp lines and rakish shape, and Lexus has taken the opportunity to bin off the gaping grille so often associated with its petrol and hybrid models. There’s a hint of the trademark shape in the RZ’s bumper – just enough to make sure you know it’s a Lexus – but it’s nowhere near as in-your-face. The interior is even better, with the predictably impeccable Lexus build quality complemented by a focus on technology that includes a knee-level heater. Taking up most of the lower dashboard, it’s designed to make you feel as though there’s a warm blanket over your knees, and though we wouldn’t exactly say it succeeds, it does at least work as a big radiator. The catch is, of course, that you don’t get a glove box. Still, the RZ is pretty practical, with plenty of legroom in the rear seats and a surprising amount of headroom considering the sloping roof. The 522-litre boot is competitive, too, albeit slightly less useful than that of the BMW iX3 or the Volkswagen ID.5. The technology, though, is still the highlight,
82
including the smart touchscreen that’s shared with some of Lexus’ other modern cars. It isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s significantly better than the systems previously seen in many of Lexus’ offerings, with clear graphics and a bright, modern design. But as with any electric vehicle, it’s the technology under the skin that hogs the limelight, and with infrastructure concerns still very much an issue for electric vehicle buyers, the success of the RZ hinges on its range. But the 71.4kWh battery pack feels a bit small by the standards of the class – pretty much everything else is available with something larger. And that means the range is less impressive than we might have hoped. Officially, our top-of-the-range test car had an endurance of just under 250 miles from a full charge, but in reality, it struggled to do more than about 150 miles on a charge, particularly at motorway speeds, where electric cars are at their least efficient. And that was on a mild and sunny spring day – ideal conditions for a battery-powered vehicle. When the temperature drops, the range becomes even lower, and the battery charging capabilities become less impressive, too. Lexus claims the RZ can be charged from empty to 80% in less than half an hour, assuming you can find a charging point fast enough to deliver 150kW. But that time has been calculated at 20 degrees Celsius. Halve that temperature, and the engineers estimate that time will double. While all this is undoubtedly a concern for anyone contemplating an RZ, there is one crumb of comfort from all this, and that’s the refreshing honesty of Lexus. Most car manufacturers would be all too eager to keep the limitations of their car’s technology under wraps, and while Lexus isn’t exactly advertising some of these facts, extracting them didn’t require much in the way of arm-twisting. The Japanese company even admitted to being over-cautious with electric vehicles, after sister brand Toyota was slated for pessimistic range readouts in the bZ4X electric SUV. Somehow Toyota got away with the name, which is the sort of thing Elon Musk would call his eighteenth child, but not a trip computer that shows a massive drop in range when you turn on the air conditioning. The RZ does much the same thing, albeit to a much lesser extent. Yet perhaps this caution has its advantages. For one, Lexus says the battery is guaranteed to retain at

least 90% of its new capacity when it reaches 10 years old. And, if you get the RZ serviced at a Lexus dealer, that’s also how long the warranty can last. Assuming you do fewer than 10,000 miles a year, that is. Where Lexus has not been cautious, though, is with the power output available. This 450e version of the RZ comes with two electric motors (one on each axle) providing 309bhp and all-wheel drive. The result is a 5.3-second dash from 0-62mph that puts this luxury SUV on a par with some hot hatchbacks. And it’s pleasant to drive, too. The body doesn’t roll too much in the bends, and although it seems to lurch a bit even under gentle cornering, there’s plenty of grip. And around town, the light steering and surprisingly plentiful visibility make it more pleasant than you might expect. More importantly, the ride comfort is pretty good as long as you stick with the smaller 18-inch alloys fitted to the entry-level cars. The 20-inch rims look better, but the smaller wheels
84
give it that bit more suppleness over the bumps. Just steer clear (pun intended) of the forthcoming One Motion Grip steering system, which is set to arrive in 2025. Using a plane-style yoke, rather than a conventional steering wheel, it’s supposed to make driving easier, but it doesn’t. Lexus, honest as ever, admits the system needs some tweaks – particularly at low speeds, where it’s very twitchy – but the system will need more than that to be better than a conventional wheel. Thankfully, the RZ is only available with a wheel at launch. Lexus’ new electric car, then, is a bit of a mixed bag. Striking design inside and out is complemented by reasonable practicality and a pleasant driving experience, but it’s all let down by the battery. Lexus claims to be working on improving the range via over-the-air updates, but we just can’t help thinking new hardware will be needed to give the RZ the success it deserves. If you could reliably get 200-250 miles from a single charge, this would be one of the best electric cars on the market. As things stand, it’s an also-ran. However, because Lexus is clearly aware of all this, there’s a chance that change might be on the way. If and when that change comes, we’d have no hesitation in recommending the RZ to anyone on the hunt for an electric car. Watch this space.

A
s the trend of home entertaining continues to rise, the desire for a welcoming outdoor space that can transition from a peaceful retreat to a lively social hub is more desirable than ever. We sat down with Rich Vernon to delve into the latest trends and tips for crafting the ultimate outdoor entertaining space. The modern homeowner seeks versatility in their outdoor spaces. They crave a setting that can host memorable gatherings with loved ones, yet also serve as a serene escape from the
daily grind. Striking this balance involves incorporating features that impress guests without compromising the tranquillity of the space. Alfresco dining remains a popular trend, with elaborate outdoor kitchens and bars continuing to be a common request. These spaces allow hosts to remain engaged with their guests while preparing sumptuous meals, or conveniently oversee caterers during larger events. From pizza ovens and contemporary gas grills to

Outdoor bars, in particular, are a hit among families with older children, providing a safe and fun space for them to socialise with friends. Seating arrangements play a crucial role in setting the ambiance. Fixed seating around a fire pit delivers clean lines and encourages people to gather, while outdoor living rooms offer a cosy spot for relaxation. Sofas, swing chairs, and versatile footstools can be arranged to create an intimate setting. Add rugs, blankets and cushions for comfort and to stamp your personal style on the space.

Garden entertaining has evolved beyond simple barbecues. With an outdoor cinema your home will become a magnet for people to enjoy sporting events together, and family film nights will no longer be exclusive to Christmas gatherings. Bluetooth sound systems allow for easy control of music, making impromptu dance parties or karaoke competitions a breeze. British weather can be unpredictable but outdoor entertaining is entirely feasible. Pergolas are a popular choice, offering protection from the elements. design to include a retractable roof for complete control. For those considering a hot tub or pool, why not have both? Partnering with SpaFlo, Rich Vernon’s team provides bespoke stainless steel installations that cater to both relaxation and fun. These spas also offer health benefits too, such as hydrotherapy features and jet systems for swimming. The secret to a captivating garden? Lighting. It not only sets the mood and highlights features but also ensures safety by illuminating different levels and steps. Effective lighting draws people into a space, making it truly inviting. Art installations and key features will never be overlooked, by day or by night. Our conversation with Rich emphasises one crucial point: meticulous planning is paramount. Taking time to understand your needs and those of your guests will ensure your outdoor space delights for years to come. Rich and his team have invested in the skills and technology to translate their on the ground experience into digital 3D renderings of garden designs. This innovative approach allows clients to visualise their transformed space before a single stone is turned. According to Rich, this has been a game-changer in delivering truly exceptional gardens. richvernon.co.uk

Q&A
with
DEBORAH MOSES, OWNER OF THE SILVER ZEBRA STUDIO Deborah, The Silver Zebra studio is located at Fields Farm, Middlewich, and was set up back in 2004. What led you to the point of setting up your own design studio? As a classically trained chef by trade, creativity and imagination was a large part of my early career and I wanted to pursue that side of my personality further. From the age of two, you could find a crayon or pencil in my hand as Mum’s old cookery books will testify! So, in 2002, I started to think about the direction this could take and as my Dad worked in glass, I thought why not work in that medium. The studio was then established after a couple of years of thought and experimenting. You offer training and classes at the studios for those looking to learn your skills, what can people expect from the experience? Visitors come along, some armed with books and sketches, others tentatively take their place stating that they can’t draw but after some refreshments, demonstrations and tutorial they are soon on their way to creating their own fabulous glass projects. Many return - some from overseas - which is so rewarding. Several have gone on to produce their own door panels, sculpture and splashbacks here.

I just love creating “individual pieces for individual people ” A freshly made lunch is provided using our home grown and locally sourced produce, and in the summer we often offer an afternoon tea with homemade scones. The chef in me is always there. Art is a therapy - I’ve observed this in my studio - it helps people relax and talk. I could probably write a book on that side of art that I never expected to see. You are well known for your luxury glass sculptures, can you talk us through your process from commission to final art piece? IIt really depends if the client has seen a piece on the website and specifies an alternative size and colour etc or it can be their own idea and we collaborate looking at designs and samples, but I’m pretty intuitive which helps. Other clients just supply a budget, show their space and leave it with me to develop a design, even with the smaller vessels and sculptures. The commission starts after the client is happy with the design. They can pop by the studio to see progress or for those further afield I’m happy to send images. The glass is cut by hand and fine particles of glass called frit are incorporated to add colour. The cut glass also adds form as I love texture and other designs require fine detailing, so we work with enamels specific for fusing. Work is fired in a kiln with some pieces needing several firings to achieve the required result. Commissions

Cheshire Council for Tatton Park. It was a 5 x 5 metre structure of bicycles suspended on scaffolding each depicting glass scenes of Cheshire, this was commissioned for the Tour of Britain race of which I also produced the winner’s trophy. You have four fabulous new collections available - could you tell us a little about them? HD “High definition” - A series of mixed media canvases, vibrant and colourful, high definition for our decor rather than our screens.
- say the wall panels for example - will need installing, of which some clients are happy to undertake themselves or we can install for them. It’s the final piece of the jigsaw seeing the commission in place. I just love creating individual pieces for individual people. Each commission is exclusive with no replications. Your mixed media canvases are proving popular what inspires this work? Yes! I had an interior designer visit a few years ago and caught me with my sleeves rolled up and covered in paint and gesso. My paintings were just a therapy really, I find it a relaxing immersive medium to work in. So since then, my paintings are in demand just as much as my glass.
“Nature” - Hand-crafted gilded mirrors decorated in the Renaissance style inspired by nature, the flamingo mirror is my favourite in the collection. “Black” - Textured wall canvases with 23k gold accents, capturing shadows and reflecting light. The juxtaposition of the matte black and reflective gold leaf looks stunning. “Bronze” - Something rather special that has been in development for some time. Available as a console or coffee table, finished in satin black with polished brass uprights, available with a bronze, antique or black mirrored inserts. thesilverzebra.co.uk
Could you talk us through some of the private commissions you have done? Gosh, there’s been so many but there’s a private hospital in Manchester that stands out. They must have at least eighteen wall panels installed, all of which were fun and technically challenging to work on. I had a lovely retired couple once who saved to make a purchase which was really touching, towards the end I just delivered the piece with a note to say it was discounted. I know I’m a softy. One of the smallest but most beautiful was producing wings for a mechanical dragonfly, she was just fabulous. And to one of the biggest, commissioned by

And Finally ... Based on the multi award-winning low energy and low noise MeacoFan 1056 the 1056P takes this much-loved air circulator and puts it on a pedestal. The air circulator is different to a normal fan because the air movement through horizontal and vertical planes means that all of the air in the room is moved giving you a comfortable cooling breeze rather than a harsh flow of air right at you. The pedestal has a variable height adjustment for optimum air flow distribution and ECO mode controls the fan speed for you automatically adjusting the strength of the flow as the room temperature changes. quietmark.com
