My life ... EMMA THACKRAY, CO-FOUNDER OF HIP POP

How would you describe yourself ? Happy. Where is home? And work? Home is in Altrincham and work is also in Altrincham, Dunham Massey to be specific, with a 2nd exciting location to be revealed very soon. What did you want to be when you were younger? A barrister, due to my obsession with This Life.

...work is also in Altrincham, Dunham Massey to be specific, with a 2nd exciting location to be revealed very soon

Name a few of your favourite places to be... France, camping by the Dordogne, looking out across Cheshire from Tegg’s Nose, eating out with my friends in Ancoats in Manchester.

What was the last gift you gave someone? Christmas presents for our lovely brewery team. Fermentation books (obvs), camper van memorabilia, dinosaur themed coasters. They are an eclectic bunch.

What or who inspires you? Dolly Parton. She is an inspirational and very savvy business woman. I love that about her. Dolly has donated millions to charity, including via her own charity, the Imagination Library, which sends books in the post to children under 5. I love her music and she’s very funny and self-deprecating. What a woman!

Who or what would you place in room 101? Rubbish cups of tea. I am a bit of a stickler about tea. It has to be brewed properly – I hate insipid brews. It has to be the right temperature, with just the right amount of milk in a proper cup … As a Yorkshirewoman who owns a kombucha business (made from tea) I think people can understand why this is important. Your mastermind subject? This is very geeky but I’m obsessed with Middle Earth and all things Tolkien. What’s been your biggest life lesson? The best things are never easy. drinkhippop.com

Official Launch Party Radisson RED Liverpool Radisson RED Liverpool Radisson RED Liverpool celebrated its arrival in style as the new hotel threw its launch party last month, treating guests to a mix of live music, DJs and dancers. Located in the city’s iconic North Western Hall, next to Lime Street train station, the hotel opened to the public in December, marking the brand’s first site in the north of England. The Grade II-listed building, which was originally designed by local architect Alfred Waterhouse in 1871, has undergone a massive renovation project, with a number of its original features being preserved and restored, including a nineteenth century stained glass window and a grand sandstone staircase. Initially opened as a British railway hotel due to its direct connection with Liverpool Lime Street train station, it has now been brought back to its original purpose. Last month’s event paid tribute to the building’s rich heritage and affinity to the city, with 1920s-themed dancers entertaining guests and a special tribute performance to The Beatles. DJs including local favourites Anton Powers, Sie Austin and Tommy Mc all took to the decks throughout the evening, while Liverpool singer and InDemand Radio presenter Marc Kenny also performed. Guests were also given the opportunity to sample dishes from the hotel’s modern barbecue and robata grill restaurant, Stoke, with favourites such as Stoke sticky fried chicken and Tempura squid being served, complemented with locally inspired signature cocktails. radissonhotels.com

B a ck t o

The Bay The Cheshire Magazine speaks to Manchester-born Marsha Thomason who plays the warm, optimistic DC Jenn Townsend in series 4 of ITV’s The Bay

Where did we leave Jenn at the end of series 3? In Series three, Jenn was new to Morecambe, she was new to her job, she was settling in to a new family situation, and there was a lot of turbulence. By the end of the series, everything felt like they were in a happier place. We did a big pan out and they were off a fish and chips on the beach in Morecambe.

How is Jenn’s home life at the start of series 4? At the start of Series four, Jenn’s life at home is really good and all the children seem to be getting on. There was a lot of turbulence last year between the kids and it really feels like they’re all happy families. However, Chris’s ex-wife appears out of nowhere, and doesn’t appear to be keen on staying away which starts to drive Jenn bonkers. Jenn and Chris are in a really good place but it feels like their relationship is

being intruded upon and it starts to become an issue. Claire (Goose) plays Jacqui and is just brilliant, I’ve loved working with her.

What’s it like coming back to the bay and seeing all the cast again? It was so great coming back for Series four. Last year I was the new girl, so I was a bit nervous, whereas this year I felt much more confident coming in and it was just so nice. We all became friends and are all in touch when we aren’t filming. It is especially nice coming back and seeing everybody as I live in LA, they would get together for dinner or drinks and they would send pictures so I’d be sad I was missing out so it’s been great to come back. 24

This series starts very quickly with a fire right at the start, how do you first arrive on the scene?

What are the dynamics of the relationships like between Jenn and Manning/Karen? The relationship between Jenn and Manning is a little tricky this year. Manning has got some personal stuff going on that Jenn stumbles upon quite by accident so it gets a bit messy. On the flip side, Jenn also has some personal issues going on in her own life that infiltrates work. That aspect has been really fun to play. Jenn and Karen’s relationship was tested a little this series. Much like Jenn and Manning, Karen is going through some stuff in her personal life, which is making her a little more sensitive at work, and she thinks that Jenn is keeping things from her when actually Jenn is just doing the best she can.

This series starts with a fire, which was really intense and so incredibly sad. It was really hard to watch as we were shooting it, very harrowing. I got very emotional. Right at the top of episode one, she gets a phone call, gets there as soon as she can and this house is ablaze and the kids are outside shouting and it is just heart-breaking. This is a particularly challenging case with some delicate relationships to manage, with the surviving children to look out for and how we handle all of that.

This feels like a particularly challenging case with some delicate relationships to manage along with some very young children to look out for. How does Jenn handle that? There are four children in the family. Two of them are teenagers, but two of them are still quite young, so Jenn has to tread carefully. What’s interesting about the case this year is that there is a grieving family and the dad hasn’t really been very hands on with them ever so this is the first time he’s ever

What was it like working with the new guest cast? It’s so lovely getting to work with a new cast. This new poor family is going through so much and Joe Armstrong is amazing to work with, such a great actor. We have some gorgeous scenes together. All the kids are really wonderful too, great, great actors and just really sweet people. It’s been really lovely getting to know them. The thing I love about The Bay is that each series becomes a new show as each series has a different family, a new story. 25

Why do you think that Morecambe works so well for the Bay? Morecambe is a character in our show. It’s so iconic and so distinctive. It is a place unto itself. The character of this place really adds to the grit and the drama of the show. had to step up and take care of them on his own whilst dealing with this grief, whilst he is trying to keep his business afloat and everything that comes with that. Jenn has more to do with the older kids, that feels like comfortable territory for her. Then there are the two younger kids. You’ve got little Ella who has Downs Syndrome and it is just devastating to watch her processing the grief and trying to understand what’s happened to her mum. Karen takes charge of the two younger children and it’s really beautiful to watch. Erin is so great with Will Oldfield who plays Jonas. They just break your heart. It’s just as well I don’t have too much work as an actor with them, honestly, because you just watch them perform and it breaks you. I’d never get through a scene.

What is it about the script that makes The Bay and this story so rich? I think that Daragh writes the most beautiful and rich stories. The show is about real people going through the worst possible moment in their life which I think any of us can empathise with and relate to. Hopefully none of us have been through the things that the people on the show go through but I do think that’s one of the reasons why the show is so popular, because you really can relate to the people in the show. 26

How does The Bay differ from series to series? The thing I love about The Bay is that you do have this core group of characters that have run through all four series pretty much, but that each series there is a whole new family, a whole new set of different characters. Each series the centre of the story changes. Every series feels like a different show.

What was it like coming back to the UK again to film? Coming from L.A. to The Bay? I love coming back to Manchester to shoot because I’m from Manchester and these last few years I’ve

TheCHESHIRE CHESHIREMagazine Magazine| Regulars | Feature The

“The thing I love about The Bay is that each series becomes a new show as each series has a different family, a new story” For those who have never seen the Bay, can you explain what it’s about and why it’s such a great show? The Bay is a crime drama with a family at the centre of the story. Every series has a new family and a new crime the police have to solve. It’s really a very tragic show, actually, but each series there feels like there is light and there is a hope at the end. But the journey for these families, it’s rough. They’re going through the worst possible thing imaginable. At its heart it’s a show about humanity which we can all relate to.

What’s your favourite thing about the play about playing Jenn? There are so many things. I just love getting to play a fully fleshed out character. It is so well written, that you get to see Jenn at work being brilliant and understanding her job so well. But we also get to see her at home, kind of a mess and figuring things out as we all do as parents. You just get to see a full person which as actors you don’t always get to play a fully realised people. It really is a gift. I love playing her.

What can audiences expect from this? As with every series, the audience can expect more drama, more heartbreak and of course, some badass cops solving crimes. itv.com gotten to come back quite a few times. It feels like Manchester’s trying to pull me back in but I’m not having it. I love you, Manchester, but I’ve got a life somewhere else! It is always a pleasure to come back. My husband’s from Manchester too and our families are still there, so it’s a real gift actually, because I get to come to work and spend time with my family. A double bonus.

What are the differences between shooting in LA versus Morecambe? It’s very different. Shooting in LA, it’s so sunny there are never any reasons to stop filming. Whereas in Morecambe and in Manchester we have to stop because of the rain, wind or conditions changing. So it is a different vibe. Also, there’s no craft services table in the UK. Come on guys. I mean, I feel we could bring that over here, you know, just a few snacks, soggy sandwiches at 4:00 and of tea. We could do better than that. 27

“I love designing for people; it doesn’t matter what style I do. After completing the project, it is rewarding to see my clients enjoying their new living areas and spaces. I have a rich imagination and always see the many possibilities giving individuality and a wow factor to every space.”

inding a new ingenious way of talking about feelings and emotions that can connect us with a country and its culture is precisely what Maria Grazia Chiuri wished to accomplish in this Dior Fall 2023 collection, with a view to explaining the collaboration, work relations and friendship linking her for many years to India and Karishma Swali, who directs the Chanakya ateliers and the Chanakya School of Craft, in Mumbai. Through the silhouettes, the Creative Director celebrates the visionary spirit of Christian Dior and his successors. A colour block sequence dedicated to silks – green, yellow, pink and purple – in homage to Marc Bohan, comes in the form of sophisticated evening coats, sari-inspired straight skirts and traditional Indian cuts, as well as pants, little boleros, jackets and brassieres: a veritable sartorial genealogy defined by different fashion heritages. Geometric shapes frame the gold and silver sequins or strass; decorative motifs come forth in this kaleidoscope of colours, and the toile de Jouy is enhanced by elements of Indian scenery; the Jardin Indien floral drawing punctuates the silk of pyjamas, shirts and dresses. A dialogue in which the collaborative dimension expresses itself more than ever, in a multi-vocal manner and thanks to exceptional savoir-faire, exemplified by embroidery. dior.com

ASK THE EXPERT Clare Horner, Beauty Director at Harvey Nichols shares her hand-picked collection of transformative beauty bests and explains the trends that are shaping the beauty industry this season. LAURA MERCIER

Tinted Moisturizer Light Revealer Natural Skin Illuminator SPF25, £37 One of the biggest trends we’re seeing in the make-up world at the moment is the emergence of hybrid products, that essentially fuse two products in one offering makeup with added skincare benefits. One of my favourite ways to incorporate skincare into my everyday routine is to use a base product that includes SPF, my favourite is the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser Light Revealer, this has light coverage, SPF 25 and gives my skin a healthy dewy glow, especially when worn over my Laura Mercier Pure Canvas Primer. The combination of these two products gives a perfect base that lasts all day long.

CHANTECAILLE

Cheek Gelée – Vibrant, £43 Another key trend and one of my top-tips for easy make-up top-ups on the go is using a multi-purpose product to simplify your routine. To maintain a dewy glow in my day-to-day look, I always turn to Chantecaille’s Cheek Gelee in Vibrant. This can be placed on the cheeks, lips, and eyes to give the face a soft, natural flush.

TRINNY LONDON

Lip2 Cheek, £26 Available instore at Harvey Nichols, Manchester If you’re looking for a look with higher coverage, I would absolutely recommend Trinny London’s multitasking Lip2Cheek, which can be built and layered to create a soft wash or a deeper, more concentred pop of colour. Trinny’s products are stackable,

40

making them easily portable and simple to swap and change to cater to your personal make-up needs. Our expert Trinny team are on hand at Harvey Nichols in Manchester to offer personalised consultations and advice, to help you find your perfect combination.

MAKEUP WARDROBING

One of the biggest trends we have seen develop over the last year is ‘Makeup Wardrobing’. Much like using a Personal Shopper for clothing, people are turning to the experts for personalised beauty advice. Our experts instore can help you build a collection of looks, colours and finishes that best suit your skin tone, texture, colouring and most importantly your personality. My lip wardrobe features different glossy lip looks using a range of products. Fenty Beauty Glossbomb is my absolute favourite, so I have it in many different shades. This worn over my YSL ‘The Bold Lipstick’ allows me to create a range of different looks day-to-day, while still staying true to my personal style.

F

often than not it is impossible to do so and the consequences lead to emotional toil and unnecessary costs. Being proactive and getting legal advice, however, could make this avoidable. To best illustrate this, I thought I would describe three real life cases (the names have been changed for privacy).

Plan for incapacity

Paul’s massive stroke was sudden; a shock to the family. After running a successful business for over 20 years, he was now no longer capable of doing so needing 24-hour care. Accessing his bank accounts, paying his bills or dealing with his investment portfolio was an impossibility because his three adult children had no legal authority. The fact that they were his “next of kin” is irrelevant in the eyes of the law. To be able to manage the finances, the children had to apply to the Court of Protection - a specialist Court that makes decisions about incapacitated and vulnerable individuals. It took almost 12 months

48

and cost £2,000 in Court fees, legal costs and insurance costs before they were able to deal with his finances. It was further complicated by the children not having a relationship and not being able to work together or decide who should be in charge. After a protracted dispute, in the end a Judge chose an independent solicitor based far away who charged for the work they did. All the while, Paul was still in hospital. The Local Authority felt it would be best to discharge him to a care home whereas the family wanted their dad to come home. However, as with the finances, the children did not have legal authority to make decisions about where Paul should live so although their views were considered, the doctor or social worker had the final say. They concluded moving home was not in his best interests which led to an impasse causing yet more stress for the family and led to Paul remaining in hospital for weeks longer. Paul could have made a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPAs) for Property & Finance and Health & Welfare whilst he was fit and healthy. These are legal documents that allow a person to nominate one or more person they trust to access bank

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Promotion

accounts, deal with investments and pensions, and decide where to live (amongst other things) respectively when they are unable to themselves. Cheaper and quicker than the Court route, once registered the LPAs are ready to use immediately if necessary. Had Paul made LPAs his children could have dealt with his property and finances and would also have had the final say about his living and care arrangements.

Plan for changes in circumstances

John’s second wife, Julie, and his daughter from his first marriage, Helen, did not get on. Helen was fearful that Julie was after her father’s house and money. Julie was worried Helen would evict her from the home if John died. Content that he had a Will in place and there would be an amicable agreement, John did nothing. Unfortunately, John did not realise that a marriage cancels a previous Will. By marrying Julie in 2019, his existing Will made in 2017 became null and void. When John died at Christmas 2021, in the absence of a Will, Julie, as his spouse, inherited the majority of his estate including the 4-bedroom family home. Helen was left with a fraction of what she had been set to inherit in the previous Will. From Helen’s point of view, arguing the Will is unfair is not a basis for any legal claim. John should have made a new Will after marriage (or his previous Will ought to have included a clause anticipating marriage). And he could have protected both his new wife and his daughter by including a trust arrangement for the home whereby Julie would have been allowed to remain there for the rest of her life thereby securing her somewhere to live whilst simultaneously ringfencing the property and his savings for his daughter once Julie had passed away.

This was because the couple had combined assets of around £850,000 and the structure of their Wills – namely the trust - meant the estate had to pay approximately £80,000 in tax. Had Lorraine and Peter taken advice they would have been advised that a married couple potentially have a combined inheritance tax allowance of £1million before tax of 40% is charged on death. This includes a nil rate band of £325,000 each and the relatively recently introduced residence nil rate band of £175,000 each which, generally speaking, is only claimable if a property is bequeathed to children or grandchildren. Together (£325,000 + £175,000) equals £500,00 allowance for each person so £1 million combined. By leaving their children’s inheritance into a discretionary trust they lost the ability to claim the residence nil rate band allowance. In other words, the structure of their Will meant their combined allowance was limited to £650,000 leaving £200,000 exposed to tax at 40%. The couple were unaware that they ought to have included a different type of trust to be able to claim the full inheritance tax allowance, retain the assets in the trust and save £80,000 for the next generation. The underlying theme is to take action now before it is too late. Do not hesitate to contact us for a no obligation initial discussion of your options. GLP solicitors are a full service law firm also specialising in Conveyancing, Commercial, Personal Injury, and Landlord and Tenant Disputes enquiries@glplaw.com 0800 138 6061

Plan for death

At the time of making their wills Lorraine and Peter were in their 70s and had two children both of whom were in the process of divorcing. Afraid that the soon-to-be ex-spouses might be entitled to any inheritance, the couple went online and executed Wills with discretionary trusts so that on their deaths Trustees would manage the money rather than it going to their children outright. Sadly, both died in relatively quick succession. Only when we were instructed to apply for the grant of probate and administer the estate did the family realise there was an inheritance tax liability.

Two Yea earr s La L ater… An update from Simon W illliams, Corporate & Commercial Partner at gunnercooke LLP

unnercooke is a challenger law firm operating a fee-share model. It is one of the fastest growing international law firms, currently comprising more than 350 senior lawyers including 300 partners across 12 global offices including London, New York, Manchester, Berlin, Glasgow and Edinburgh. In March 2021 I started working out of the gunnercooke Manchester office and a home office in Chester. As the business grew during 2021, I was joined that December by the invaluable Alex Connah, Corporate & Commercial Associate, who I had worked with at my previous law firm since 2015. Shortly after Alex joined, we started looking for a Chester-based office space for us to work from and meet clients, and in February 2022, we received the keys to our premises on Chester Business Park (Honeycomb South), which we work from on a day-to-day basis as well as using the gunnercooke Manchester office. A couple of months later, in April 2022, our team increased to three members when my wife Bryony (who is also a Solicitor) joined us in a non-fee earning, operational, role to help with running the business and managing the office. As the business continued to grow, we recruited Lewis Dawson as a Corporate & Commercial

50

Paralegal in September 2022. Lewis has been a fantastic addition and support to the team. In February, we further strengthened our offering to our clients and grew to a team of five, with the arrival of the very experienced Chris Williams, Corporate & Commercial Partner. Chris has over 30 years’ experience and has joined us from an international law firm in Manchester. Although Chris has only been with us for a short while, he has been a very welcome addition to the team and I look forward to us all continuing to work together to provide the best service we can to our clients. We act for various national and international clients, including nationally recognised brand names, and advise in relation to all aspects of corporate and commercial law. In terms of corporate matters, we are regularly instructed in relation to work such as: mergers and acquisitions, debt and equity investments, group reorganisations and demergers, joint venture agreements, shareholder agreements, cross option agreements and option agreements and employee share schemes including EMI. We are also frequently instructed on commercial matters such as: terms and conditions of business, franchise agreements and general commercial contracts. We are continuing to develop our partner practice and in April of this year, Alex Connah is being promoted to Senior Associate and Lewis will be starting a Training Contract to continue his journey to becoming a Solicitor. It is so rewarding to recognise their hard work and I look forward to supporting them both in the next chapters of their careers. As for the rest of 2023 and beyond – watch this space!

calibre of colleagues and clients and it’s incredible to see what we have built in the space of two years; from starting off on my own in a home office to now being part of a team of five working from an office at Chester Business Park. In addition to focusing on the service we are providing to our clients, we are also trying to do our bit for sustainability and giving something back to the community. We have introduced a recycling system in our office and we have an all-electric company car. We are also a member of the Cheshire 100 (Cheshire Community Foundation) which supports charities within the local community”.

Alex: “I continue to be

impressed with the variety and quality of work that I am exposed to and the wealth of knowledge and expertise demonstrated by my colleagues at gunnercooke. The ambitious growth of the firm, and our team in particular, will allow me to continue working with, and learning from, some of the industry’s leading lawyers. I am very much looking forward to taking the next step in my career in becoming a Senior Associate in April”.

MEET THE CHEF:

TA N N E R

W H ITESI DE Head Chef at Hawksmoor Liverpool What’s your first food related memory? Having chip pan chips, fried eggs and a bit of buttered bread at my granny’s house. Looking back, I have no clue how the place never burned down. It would it be almost worth it though because those chip pan chips were the best. Describe your style in three words. Hearty, tasty and wholesome. What’s your favourite dish to create? I love making anything that has flour involved, from pasta to pastries. I love the idea that a bag of ground down wheat can be transformed into something that looks and tastes delicious with a few simple steps. Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? Books, a lot of cookbooks and also television. I will finish a full day in the kitchen and go home and watch any cooking programs because you never know what will stand out or make an idea pop into your head. I also try and draw inspiration from any countries that I am fortunate enough to visit. What four ingredients are necessary in your kitchen? Flour, salt, eggs, butter. If you could prepare a meal for anyone, who would it be and what would you make? I would love to cook a meal for my granny. I would, of course, cook chips and let her see how we do them these days, no doubt at the expense of facing heavy criticism for triple cooking a potato. I would keep it simple and cook a nice rib eye steak and then some variation of cream bun.

What are you most proud of in your career? I am probably most proud of the fact that I have achieved quite a lot in a short space of time. Being involved in the opening of a grand restaurant like Hawksmoor, bringing a team of chefs together who previously had never met before, to help deliver, alongside the rest of the team, one of the best food experiences Liverpool has to offer. Who is your biggest supporter? I have two! My mum Joyce, has supported me in anything I do as long as I am happy, providing me with great advice over the years. The other is my fiancé Emma. She is my rock, that’s always there through the good and bad days to help me find the strength to achieve and succeed. What would you want to have as your last meal? Can I say a sandwich? Really anything I can put between two pieces of any bread and enjoy. Are there any foods you just don’t like? Liquorice, I can’t stand it! What do you think is the most challenging ingredient to work with? Salt is such an important ingredient in cooking. If used correctly, it has the ability to transform a dish; on the other hand, it also has the ability to completely destroy a dish. On a personal level, a challenging ingredient to work with is quinoa. I don’t know, I just can’t seem to ever get it right. I leave that to Emma. Do you do the cooking at home? I do the majority of the cooking, however I do love to sit back and be cooked, even if it is beans on toast. Whenever I am being cooked for, which happens quite regularly at home, I do have a tendency to take over. I just can’t help it. thehawksmoor.com 55

From intimate hideaways to stunning restaurant bars, Liverpool is full of great spots to enjoy a cocktail (or two) with some highlights that simply cannot be missed.

Hawksmoor’s Ranch Water Having opened last November, Hawksmoor not only brings ‘the world’s best steak’ to Liverpool but also the latest edition of their multi-award-winning cocktail list. Hawksmoors’ Ranch Water pays homage to a popular US drink originating from West Texas; mineral and fresh with a gentle agave hum, it’s a carbonated mix of tequila, mezcal, pineapple soda, hopped kombucha, jalapeño salt and agave syrup. thehawksmoor.com

Burnt Milk Hotel’s Sub-Zero Martini The cafe-bar and bottle shop tucked away in the corner of the docks is fast becoming one of Liverpool’s coolest hangouts with their Sub-zero martini quickly becoming a rite of passage for all guests at Burnt Milk Hotel. The Sub-Zero Martinis are inspired by one of the founders’ favourite hotel bars in the world; Dukes, London. These martinis are gin based, ice-cold, bone-dry and delicious. burntmilkhotel.com

Present Company’s Biscoff Old Fashioned Present Company is a local bar generating national attention. Named in the UK’s 50 Best Cocktail bars, it’s the brand’s signature Biscoff Old Fashioned that has everyone talking since winning Best Drink at the Class Bar Awards. A mix of Buttered Woodford Reserve bourbon, Biscoff and bitters it’s bold, smooth and indulgent. presentcompany.bar

Bacino’s Peach Enzoni Nestled in the Flannels Beauty Hall, Bacino is the perfect spot to escape the madness of the city and watch the world go by whilst sipping one of their aperitivo style cocktails; all of which are inspired by the regions of Italy and Italian spirits. Bacino’s dedicated Negroni menu offers a selection of five must-try twists with the most popular being the Peach Enzoni. Whilst the classic, bitter-tasting Negroni might not be for everyone; this version using fresh grapes rather than vermouth and a sweet peach gin, gives the drink body and a roundness which makes for the perfect easy-drinking aperitivo. bacinorestaurants.com

HERMITAGE BAY, ANTIGUA

THE SAROJIN, KHAO LAK, THAILAND,

The Amalfi Coast is a fantastic spot for lovers of small hotel gems. Palazzo Avino offers the chance to stay in a former 12th century private villa, where rooms are decorated with Vietri tiles, antique carpets and Italian furniture. Petite and chic, this authentic character is truly one of a kind. Heading over to the tranquil coastline of Khao Lak in Thailand, The Sarojin is designed in a contemporary Asian style. Along with just 56 luxurious residences, it stands out with attentive service and personalised experiences curated by a full-time ‘imagineer’. Whether you want to embark on an elephant trek, enjoy a private waterfall dinner in the jungle, or relax in the peaceful Thai gardens, you’ll experience a truly personal stay with the finest service. inspiringtravel.co.uk

PALAZZO AVINO AMALFI COAST

rom cosy beachfront boltholes to hillside hideaways, or simply somewhere intimate enough where staff know your name and your favourite cocktail, it’s often the smaller hotels that offer a more personalised experience. For me, boutique means the most individual places possible. Somewhere out of the ordinary, where thoughtful service and high-end amenities take centre stage. Although small in size – many hotels have fewer than 40 rooms – they’re often big on style, personal touches and character. At Inspiring Travel, we even have a whole collection dedicated to the finest small and personal hotels. So, this year, why not add a boutique escape to your travel calendar? By thinking beyond big resorts, you may well uncover a few hidden gems that you might never have considered before. Where to start? How about in a quiet corner of Antigua at the intimate Hermitage Bay? Comprising just 30 luxury suites, this resort is the ultimate place to relax. I recommend one of the Hillside Pool Suites for unbeatable Caribbean Sea views from your own private plunge pool.

I N TH T H E C IT ITY Y Celebrating its tenth birthday next year, the momentous Titanic Hotel at Liverpool’s Stanley Dock was visited by Craig Hough LOCATION

Located on Stanley Dock, a mere ten minute drive from Liverpool’s city centre, the location of Titanic Hotel offers guests the advantage of being outside the noise of the city, but within reachable distance if needed. The Titanic is also a 30-minute walk to the culture of Tate Liverpool art gallery and the Maritime Museum over at the Albert Dock. Built in 1846, in what was the North Warehouse, architects salvaged industrial features including giant ironwork goods doors, steel girders and restored windows. References to Titanic can be found throughout the hotel, from White Star Line posters adjourning the walls to a replica of the ill-fated ship in the reception area.

ROOMS AND SUITES

The bedrooms are spacious, welcoming and homely with battleship grey curtains and panelled windows; the interiors adorn the untouched exterior of the building. The 153 rooms are all about space, with exposed brick and original vaulted ceilings, the bedrooms pay homage to the history of this hulking building. Each room also has original windows offering vast views either of the Mersey or of the grade II listed Tobacco Warehouse next door. The bathrooms are huge, but only certain rooms offer a bathtub so make sure you request when making your booking.

DINING

Stanley’s Bar and Grill sits to the left of the hotel on the ground floor and is a huge space that allows diners to watch the hard working team of chefs preparing

food. We decided to dine at lunch and enjoyed a nice relaxed service; however our waitress did comment the restaurant is much busier, and livelier during the evening. The menu is a mix of steaks, pasta dishes and British classics including fish and chips and a stunning chargrilled pork chop and bubble and squeak potato cake. The Rum Bar, inside the restaurant, boasts 160 varieties of the spirit and an impressive cocktail menu that could keep you occupied all visit.

MAYA BLUE WELLNESS

Hidden in the underground of the Titanic lies Maya Blue Wellness, a wellness sanctuary that comprises a hydrotherapy pool, steam room, sauna, sanarium, foot bath, experience shower and relaxation area. Managed by the lovely Sophie McDermott, the spa offers an extensive range of wellness treatments that you can pre-book to give your stay a wellness boost.

CONCLUSION

Titanic Hotel Liverpool offers a uniquely different stay from any other hotel in the city. The hotel is filled with character and historic charm that other venues in the city do not offer. This year, the film of the same name celebrates its 25th anniversary, and the hotel itself celebrates an anniversary of its own next year, now is a better time than any to stay at Liverpool’s top hotel. titanichotelliverpool.com

The Ro Windermere Liam Carr soaked up picturesque views over Windermere during his stay at The Ro in South Lakeland

Food and Drink Overlooking the garden, Lacu at The Ro specialises in British cuisine and hosts breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu is filled with hearty food options including rib-eye steak, Peking duck breast and pan fried chicken and also several options for vegans and vegetarians. The menu highlight was the confit shoulder of Lakeland lamb with crispy coated lamb belly, mushrooms, carrots, baby onions, creamy mash, back garlic puree and red wine jus. The team are incredibly attentive, and you will leave Lacu feeling well fed and well looked after. The hotel’s bar is a hive of activity in the later evening as we experienced guests mixing with locals over a cocktail, sharing their experiences from the day. When it comes to mixology, the bar team know what they are doing. The cocktail menu is varied; however the team are open to steering off menu to create your favourite mix. The area is incredibly relaxed and offers a decent daytime bar menu that includes traditional sandwiches, nibbles (nachos,

halloumi fries), main courses (fish and chips, burgers, steak and kidney pudding) as well as a wide selection of desserts (local ice cream, cheese board).

Special Experiences The hotel also offers bespoke experiences packages for guests hosted by local experts. The new Adventu’RO’us showcases the spectacular scenery of the Lakeland fells, valleys and lakes from the south to the north, including 4,000 year old Castlerigg Stone Circle set high on the fells with panoramic views of the mountains. The Country ‘RO’ads is a must for Beatrix Potter fans and takes in many places associated with the famous children’s author, including Hawkshead and Hill Top Gardens and a special lake cruise. Finally, The Ro’s new Cruise Away packages offer guests the opportunity to get even closer to the magnificent mountain scenery and embark on an expedition along Lake Windermere.

Personal Note The Ro is the ideal location to explore the lakes, soak up the views of Windermere and the surrounding mountains, all while sipping on an indulgent cocktail or two. It’s time to book your Lake District getaway. therohotel.com

E le g an t L a ke s i de E s c ape ape Set near the lakefront with stunning views from the rooftop infinity pool, David and Kate Poynton enjoyed a relaxed winter stay at Hilton Lake Como

L

ake Como has been on our must do list for some time now, so we were very excited about our stay at Hilton Lake Como. We arrived on a crisp January afternoon and were instantly impressed by the immaculate reception area, located in an old silk factory. Our check-in was smooth, informative and professional. We were allocated a loft suite which was fantastic to say the least! The standout feature of this room was the full glass ceiling, which gave a unique view of the surrounding mountains of Lake Como; a view that you could not take your eyes from. And as this was a loft suite split over two floors, the bed was perfectly positioned on the upper floor so that in the morning you could open the electric blinds and stare out straight over the Lake. The rest of

our room was modern, stylish and well laid out with a spacious lounge area, walk-in wardrobe and a large bathroom. That night we had the pleasure of dining in Satin Restaurant located in the hotel. We indulged in an excellent three course meal. For starters, we had a deliciously creamy burrata with black truffle perlage, and the scallops which were cooked to perfection and complemented by a chorizo crumble and violette potato crisp. For mains, we enjoyed lobster spaghettoni, which was delightfully indulgent, and as you would

67

expect in Italy the pasta was perfectly al dente. I (David) opted for deer as my main course, which was cooked pink, just the way I like it. The deer was light, tender and in true Italian fashion included black truffle, which really enhanced the dish. This, of course, was all the better for having some top notch local Italian wine to wash down with. Our sweet tooth was then satisfied by a lovely and rich tiramisù and the Valrhona dark chocolate fondant heart. To put the cherry on top to this wonderful meal, we treated ourselves to a glass of dessert wine (the Moscato). By this point we were feeling very comfortable in this hotel and relaxed further in the hotel lounge area. The lounge is located in the centre of the hotel and smartly connects the original silk factory with newly built parts of the hotel. The lounge which is encased in glass walls and ceiling offers an expansive feel while still feeling cozy. I was also impressed by the diffusers as this aroma added to our relaxation. Before turning in for the night to see if we could do some star gazing through our glass ceiling loft suite we enjoyed a few more drinks in the lounge area and was impressed by the table service we received. After a good night’s sleep we were ready for breakfast, which was again

68

located in the smartly designed Satin Restaurant. Breakfast was buffet style and had an excellent continental selection, along with a well stocked hot selection. I was impressed by their scrambled eggs as you could choose between how you like them cooked - soft and creamy or hard scrambled eggs. And if you’d prefer, omelette’s were on offer to order, as well as a few other à la carte options After breakfast we headed to the rooftop to explore the roof terrace where the infinity pool was located. Again, it was a crisp winters day with perfect blue skies and a dusting of snow on the mountain tops. Normally in these conditions a dip in the pool would be out of the question; however this infinity pool was heated to a very pleasant 30C. Sometime passed enjoying this unique experience and admiring the views, before heading down to the eForea Spa for a silk touch massage which was by far the most relaxing experience ever. In keeping with celebrating Como’s rich history of silk making excellence, this massage is a signature treatment that was pure relaxation from start to finish, with aromatic oils selected for you by your therapist and a tailored massage to suit your needs.

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Regulars

Using silk stretching, it is perfect for melting away stress and tension, leaving you feeling rejuvenated, balanced and soothed. The eForea Spa itself was also incredibly calming from the moment you walked in creating the perfect environment for sumptuous relaxation. After such a sublime massage we continued to enjoy the wellness centre which included an indoor pool with hydro jets, a sauna, steam room and a relaxation area. After the most relaxing morning, we decided to head into Como to do some exploring. Hilton Lake Como is located only a 10-15 minute stroll away from the iconic town. A walk by the lake discovering some local bars and restaurants while taking in the atmosphere and views is a must. In the evening we headed back to the hotel and went down to the Taffeta bar. The bar flows directly from reception and is elegant in design. We were made two excellent Smoked Negronis and the hospitality and service was second to none. The team on the bar were also very helpful and friendly and were even kind enough to offer some suggestions on where to go on our onward trip to Milan. The next morning we headed down for breakfast to get fuelled up for our onward journey. Our stay at Hilton Lake Como was coming to an end. We checked out and the concierge arranged for an executive Maserati car to take us to the train station. Our stay at Hilton Lake Como beat our expectations; the food, service, hotel room, eForea Spa and overall ambience were sensational and we left completely relaxed. Lake Como is a special place, and when staying in Lake Como a special hotel is deserved. Hilton Lake Como is certainly the place to stay. hilton.com 69

This is Audi’s vision of the future. It’s called the Activesphere, and it offers us a glimpse of what Audis might feel like in another few decades. As well as being a sleek-looking electric SUV, the Activesphere transforms into a pick-up truck on demand, but even that isn’t the most remarkable thing about this design study. Because instead of having a conventional interior, the Activesphere comes with a mixed reality cabin accessed through a pair of glasses, displaying interactive elements over the real interior. It seems unlikely the Activesphere will ever make it into production, but aspects of its design are expected to inspire future Audi products. audi.co.uk

The astonishing Aston Martin DBS may be about to exit stage left, but its final act will be one to remember

A

ston Martin is about to wave goodbye to its magical DBS grand tourer, but like an aging rock star on a farewell tour, the big Aston is coming back for a final encore with the DBS 770 Ultimate. A more powerful version of the standard DBS, the limited-edition Ultimate has already sold out, and the first examples will arrive with customers this summer. In total, just 499 examples of the DBS 770 Ultimate will be built for customers around the world, with 300 coupes joined by 199 convertibles. But regardless of the roof, each one will come with plenty of enhancements to ensure it lives up to its name. There are vents in the bonnet to increase cooling and carbon-fibre elements all round to lower weight and make the car look more muscular. Inside, Aston Martin has fitted high-end Sports Plus seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara, complete with a ‘fluted’ quilting design. There’s a bespoke colour

74

split, too, with contrasting colours and a tailor-made strap for the centre arm rest. And, of course, there’s a unique set of sill plaques for each car, denoting its position as a limited-edition DBS 770 Ultimate. Perhaps most importantly, however, Aston Martin has fettled the V12 engine to produce a massive 759bhp, all of which goes to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a limited-slip differential. That ensures impressive performance, but Aston has also tweaked the suspension and brakes to make sure the Ultimate handles as well as it should. The company claims its “targeted improvements” will “accentuate” the feel and agility of the car. Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate, Sold out, astonmartin.com

BIRTHDAY BASH

loves

One of Cheshire’s most elegant residents is celebrating a big birthday this year, and Bentley has given it quite the present. We say it because the Cestrian in question is not a person, but a car. More specifically, it’s the gorgeous 1953 Bentley R-Type Continental affectionately known as ‘Jas’. Housed at Bentley’s Crewe HQ, Jas is a stunning example of the Bentley tourer that was once the world’s fastest four-door production car, and to celebrate the big day, Bentley has built a modern interpretation, applying the same paintwork and interior trim to the modern Continental GT. The new car is not set to go on sale, but it will join the Bentley fleet and might be spotted in and around Crewe over the coming months. Bentley Continental GT Azure R-Type 70th bentleymotors.com

HARDCORE HALLELUJAH Just last year, BMW revived its fabled CSL badge with a new, hardcore version of the M4 sports coupe. The resulting stripped-out, two-seat two-door missed the mark somewhat, so BMW has applied the same weight-saving logic to the bigger, heavier M3 saloon. Less controversially known as the M3 CS, the new car retains its back doors, but it gets lighter bodywork, a pared-back cabin and some extra power for the 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine up front. It gets all-wheel-drive, too, to help it transmit its 542bhp to the road with minimum fuss, and the result is a four-door saloon that gets from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 188mph. The quintessential hippy van just got even more eco-friendly with the arrival of the new ID. Buzz MPV. James Fossdyke went to see whether it can be as iconic as its ancestor

B

ack in the 1950s, Volkswagen was an up-and-coming German car maker, known primarily for the Beetle, the morally questionable car of the people. But after the Beetle came something with slightly fewer ties to extreme right-wing politics. In fact, the Type 2, known locally as the ‘Bulli’, became a symbol of the hippy movement, embodying anti-nuclear sentiment, peace, love and, to some extent, drugs. You probably know it as the VW Camper. Today, the old VW Bulli is quite a popular classic, desirable among those who want to relive the swinging ‘60s or simply imagine they’re still surfers on Venice beach. So, with the Bulli back in fashion, VW has gone the way of Fiat and Mini, creating a modern interpretation of the Bulli with modern fixtures and fittings. The style is not quite the same – it’s retro, rather than classic – but the attitude remains, and this being the 2020s, it had to be electric. Welcome, then, to the most peaceful, most lovey-dovey, most environmentally friendly VW bus yet: the new ID. Buzz. Yes, the name is ridiculous, but the recipe is simple. Take some of the styling of the old Bulli, modernise it, then apply it to a practical and modern cabin with a tree-hugging electric powertrain. Surely, it’ll be the darling of hippies old and new? It certainly looks the part. The two-tone paint is, sadly, an optional extra, but surely it has to be the first option any would-be customer would tick. Combined with the almost flat front, the huge VW badge and the grille-like trim on the rear window frames, it’s clearly a child of the old Bulli. Yet it still looks modern, with a kind of Star Wars-style look to it, and a bulky yet timeless shape. There are no two ways about it – the Buzz is a good-looking thing. It’s also a pretty sizeable thing. You have to climb up into it, and the footprint is roughly the same as that of the Transporter van that has become so popular among tradespeople. In fact, VW also makes a panel van version of this vehicle, which it calls the ID. Buzz Cargo. Without rear seats, it’s a massively spacious electric van,

offering almost as much load-carrying ability as the conventionally powered Transporter. Oddly, though, the passenger-carrying ID. Buzz conspires to be much less practical. Although it’s huge and the boot is predictably enormous, it’s currently available only in five-seat form, which means it’ll carry as many people as, say, a Golf. Surely, a seven-seat version must be on the way, but Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed it yet, so five is all the ID. Buzz will take for the time being. Admittedly, the enormous amount of interior space means it’ll seat five people very comfortably, even if they take all their luggage with them. The huge boot means suitcases, paddleboards, umbrellas and anything else you might want to cart about will be swallowed up with consummate ease, and that makes this car ideal for days out with the family. Except, of course, it’s only ideal if you’re going somewhere very close to home or with an abundance of charging points. Because the ID. Buzz is completely electric – there’s no petrol or diesel engine whatsoever – it has an official range of about 250 miles. But if you want to drive on the motorway, that range is likely to fall below 200 miles in anything other than ideal conditions. By which we mean a warm day on which you’re reluctant to use the air conditioning, which saps charge from the battery. That said, you can charge the ID. Buzz fairly quickly, assuming you can find a working charge point with adequate charging speed. Finding one of those can take a little bit of forward planning. That minor issue aside, the ID. Buzz is a very pleasant thing to live with. Whereas other cars in VW’s electric ID. range can be a bit bland inside, the ID. Buzz has a smartly styled dashboard with mock wood trim and a shelf for storing stuff, as well as a removable centre console storage box for extra storage. Add in big door bins, comfy seats and a massive central touchscreen, and it all looks pretty good. But VW has made a few mistakes in there. First of all, there’s the insistence on swapping buttons for touchscreens, which means there are almost no physical controls whatsoever. Instead,

77

Drive | The CHESHIRE Magazine

Volkswagen ID. Buzz Style 77kWh

steering is light, you get features such as parking sensors and reversing cameras, and because the incredibly heavy battery lives under the floor, the ID. Power: 201bhp Buzz doesn’t roll around in corners like most vans would. It’s even quite comfortable at motorway speeds, although the heavy battery does make the suspension work hard around town. Combine all that with the quiet power of the 201bhp electric motor, and you’ve got a family bus that’s far more refined than most of its rivals, and one that feels more car-like on the road. But all that comes with a very hefty price indeed. Prices start at well over £60,000, and our test car was knocking on the door of £70,000, which is a lot of money for something when a seven-seat Tiguan Allspace costs roughly half as much. In truth, though, the Tiguan Allspace is not a competitor to the ID. Buzz. The electric van is its own thing, designed purely for those who want a fresh twist on the Bulli bus style with modern safety and technology. And it delivers that perfectly, offering a likeable and charming electric van that’s built to tug on your heart strings and those of everyone who lays eyes on it. It’s cool, and that’s all it needs to be.

Volkswagen has placed a few touch-sensitive sliders on the dashboard, allowing you to control volume and heater temperatures. Or at least that’s the idea. In practice, the sliders are fiddly and awkward, and because VW forgot to illuminate them at night, they’re completely useless once the sun goes down. The touchscreen navigation system is only marginally better, with far too many fiddly and distracting menus that make operating it a nightmare when you’re on the move, but at least the system is crisp and stylish. Combined with the digital instrument display behind the steering wheel, it does everything most customers will ever need it to do. And the ID. Buzz has plenty going for it. Because it’s based on much the same mechanical components as the ID.4 electric SUV, it’s quite pleasant to drive, and certainly more enjoyable than the old ‘Bulli’ of the 1950s. The

Creat eatiing Safe Pla lacces for for Bod Body y, M ind & Soul Offering top quality service and buildings that are made to last, Crown Pavillions offers a wide range of long term investment opportunities for your home

S

ince appearing on ITV’s Love Your Garden, the British public have sought out Crown Pavilions and their unique luxury wooden gazebos and garden rooms. With a VIP list of discerning customers, including Lord Alan Sugar and Duncan Bannatyne, Crown Pavilions is often described by those in the know as the best in the business.

So, what makes a Crown Pavilions garden building so special? Crown Pavilion’s CEO Luke Dejahang attributes this to what is known within the company as the Crown Marque of Excellence. “We only use the finest sustainably sourced materials and craftsmen to create what we consider to be the world’s finest garden rooms. Underpinning everything is our meticulous attention to detail and five-star customer service.”

LUXURY GAZEBOS

Year round alfresco cooking, dining, lounging and entertaining A luxury wooden gazebo from Crown Pavilions creates a unique space in heart of your garden where you can entertain friends, cook, serve sumptuous suppers and party long into the night. Or, if you prefer the quieter life, a blissful space where you can relax over breakfast, laze away a summer’s afternoon or simply sit back and enjoy a good book. There are 14 models to choose from, for gardens of every size and shape. They all come

with dining and lounging furniture and luxurious soft furnishings as standard. The marine grade canvas side blinds offer protection and flexibility – they can be dropped down and zipped together during inclement weather and rolled up in the sunshine. You can also customise your cushion and blind colours to taste, add heating and even upgrade with a wood-fired oven for larger models.

GARDEN ROOMS

Insulated garden offices, gyms, bars, cinemas, teenage dens and more... A Crown Pavilions insulated garden room, built to residential standards is for those seeking additional living space. However, unlike a bricks and mortar extension a garden room can be built in just a few short weeks and in many cases planning permission is not required. With many still working from home, garden offices are still in

high demand. A Crown Pavilions luxury garden room can be used for so much more than work though. “Garden bars, cinemas and gyms are three of our most popular projects. We’re also seeing more customers ask for multi-functional space”, adds Luke. The use of traditional timber building methods sets Crown Pavilions apart. Their buildings are built on site with 6’x2’ and 4’x2’ timber studs, joists and structural steels where necessary. The company also holds a TRADA certification from the Timber Research and Development Association which means everything is compliant and correct – from the timber sizing, insulation and joist spacing through to ventilation, fixtures and fittings. The result is a residential grade living space on par with the rest of your home. crownpavilions.com

The S1 Sauna

The world’s first retractable sauna is ideal for those wanting to incorporate the detoxifying and healing benefits of regular sauna use into their daily routine, but are short on space. Only 60cm deep when retracted, it is the same size as an average wardrobe, yet at the touch of a button, it extends to a depth of 1.6m with sophisticated eMove technology. New for 2023, the Klafs S1 Sauna now also comes in a chic black finish – perfect for more contemporary homes blending seamlessly into the interior design of your home. The ESPURO Foam Bath

Perfect for hotels, private health clubs, spas or cruise ships, the new product provides an unparalleled wellness and relaxation experience for your guests. A lowmaintenance option for your cleaning teams, all water-carrying lines are flushed and disinfected at the touch of a button, meaning your guests can feel safe and comfortable during their foam bathing experience.

Moving Floor Swimming Pools

Swimming is an excellent way to work your entire body and cardiovascular system. An hour of swimming burns almost as many calories as running, without the impact on your bones and joints. Guncast’s moving floor swimming pool is a fabulous solution for expanding homes without enlarging the footprint or losing rooms. With one touch of a button, the swimming pool is seamlessly raised or lowered, transforming right before your eyes. This innovative option is the ideal solution for families with young children or pets, giving parents peace of mind and

Vitality Pools

Last but certainly not least is Guncast’s Vitality, Spa and Hydrotherapy Pools. The vitality pool is an excellent option for those who wish to have a pool but worry they don’t have enough space. Equipped with air and water jets and often features such as bubble pads, massage benches and powerful massage jets, these small “swimming pools” are the perfect addition to your daily wellness routine. Swift Unlimited has been designing and building luxury garden rooms, living annexes and extensions for over 16 years. We catch up with Swift’s founders, Martin and Cath Lawson to learn more…

Garden rooms? So, posh sheds, right?

Cath: We’ve spent the last 16 years hearing that phrase! Anyone walking into a Swift Unlimited garden room, living annex or extension will soon realise how far short that description falls! Martin: We set out in 2007 to design and build high-end detached extensions. Imagine the quality and feel of a room from inside your house but in a beautifully designed and built, warm and weatherproof detached building in the position of your choosing in the garden – that’s a Swift Unlimited garden room! “Posh sheds” they’re not!

How has Swift changed over the years?

Martin: We have always pushed the boundaries of what is possible with a garden room; whether it’s in our creative designs, innovative materials or expectationexceeding service, we’ve always looked to make Swift Unlimited a pioneer in the garden building world. We know our clients have increasingly sophisticated tastes and expect more from their investment. Therefore, it’s right that we not only listen to them but also stay in front by offering more innovation, better quality and service that’s second to none.

Where do you even start in designing your rooms and annexes?

Cath: As Martin said, we put the needs and wants of our clients at the centre of everything we do. This means that an “off-the-shelf” garden room or living annexe doesn’t cut it these days. We’re incredibly fortunate to have a wide portfolio of unique designs that our designers can take inspiration from. They can get creative in all sorts of ways to provide a room that is not only perfect in function, but also in form. We can, in all honesty, say that no two Swift buildings are the same. Every detail is carefully considered to offer a solution or fulfil a client’s needs.

We’ve noticed a bit of a rebrand. Tell us about it…

Martin: Well-spotted! Yes, we noticed that the more bespoke our services, designs and builds became the more we realised that the choice from Swift is boundless… hence Swift Unlimited. Our aim has always been to make clients’ dreams a reality. As dreams tend to be limitless so we needed to be limitless too. One of the key questions we ask our clients, and ourselves is “What if…?”. This approach leads to more ideas, more excitement, and fabulous outcomes.

You sound like you’re about to start a new venture, not continue running an established business!

Cath: Exactly! That’s what it feels like every day! Swift Unlimited is a family business and wouldn’t be

88

Homes and Interiors

what it is if we didn’t love our jobs. A long time ago we set four core values for ourselves and our team: Trust, Empowerment, Pride and Fun. We still live by these values today in everything we do. That way every day, every meeting and every opportunity is new and exciting!

Who are Swift Unlimited’s clients?

Martin: We love speaking with people about their dreams, their ideas and their needs for additional high-quality living space. As our name says, we’re unlimited in terms of who we want to help find the right solution. It’s our passion to help educate and equip all those who come to us with the information they need to empower their own decisions. Whether they’d love a fabulous bar; a luxury hot tub area; a games space for quality time with family and friends; a high-end gym to improve their fitness or a warm, safe, comfortable living annexe to allow multigenerational living – when clients come to Swift Unlimited they leave having spoken to knowledgeable, friendly, memorable people who have helped them along their journey. Cath: We place great value in being the right match for clients. We are very unlikely to be the cheapest option but whilst price is a factor, we often find it is well down the list of priorities. When a client wants dependable advice and service along with fastidious attention to detail in the design and build, Swift Unlimited is the perfect choice.

use. They are designed and built to be warm and dry no matter what is happening outside. Cath: That said, the rooms of our clients definitely come into their own when it comes to the summer months. Garden rooms are the perfect hub for barbecues and garden parties offering versatile space for lots of activities. Swift Unlimited live up to our name as we can design and install beautiful, useful living space very quickly. In Spring, there is still time to be ready to take advantage of the garden this Summer and have that dream space to enjoy.

What else would you like people to know about Swift Unlimited?

Cath: There’s so much to tell but we feel that our clients are the best people to answers that! “Stress-free project from start to finish. I wish all companies worked like Swift Garden Rooms” SC, Alderley Edge. “They could not have been more conscientious if they had been working on their own property.” DW, Cheshire. “The design process was efficient and precise, whilst still creative and enjoyable. The build was on time and to spec, with the builders being really great people to have around!” RS, Irby Martin: We work hard to delight our clients and don’t take this type of feedback for granted. When it comes (and it does!), it means so much to Cath and I, and the rest of the team here at Swift Unlimited. swiftorg.co.uk

Garden rooms are for summer, correct?

Martin: Everyone likes to spend time outside when the British weather allows it but Swift Unlimited’s garden rooms and living annexes are designed for year-round

Q&A

with

STEVEN HUME & KORALIA HUME, DIRECTORS AND CO-OWNERS OF QUARRYBANK BOUTIQUE BATHROOMS

What can you tell us about Quarrybank Boutique Bathrooms and your stunning showroom in the heart of Wilmslow? We are Cheshire’s most unique bathroom showroom. What differentiates us from other showrooms is unique service offering which combines the care and services of a boutique style shop with an experienced bathroom design team. Uniquely decorated and designed, the showroom’s aim is to inspire and influence new ideas to enhance a bathroom space. The boutique oozes uniqueness in its decor, the copper bath in the front window display draws people in from the street and jazz music invites prospective customers to browse with a glass of fizz. The shop also became a small gallery recently, as we have partnered with a well known artist - Lily Greenwood, whose most amazing canvases complement our displays. Customers know they are somewhere special, from the moment they walk in. They find themselves in this magical place where their dreams will be understood and materialised in a beautifully designed and fitted bathroom.

90

We are certainly different, and it is to our thrill that bathroom industry experts also notice that, as we have been shortlisted to the final of “bathroom oscars” - the most prestigious industry award - KBB Awards in Category “New Retailer of the Year”. We are now competing with three showrooms across the entire UK. We cannot wait for the final results which will be announced in April this year in Cardiff. Fingers crossed we bring “gold” to Grove Street. Wilmslow is renowned for its strong community spirit, how important is community to you as a business? The Cheshire community is at the heart of what we do and what drives us to constantly improve our services and provide what our customers desire. We would go far and beyond to ensure we continue with the reputation of a “go to” bathroom showroom in Cheshire and we enjoy actively contributing to that. Since opening our door in June last year, we became quite famous for our “Open Days” which are family-oriented events where we serve cakes, drinks and celebrate becoming part of the Wilmslow community. We organise competitions for children to win attractive prizes and we use client astonishment, to not only draw attention

FROM THE LEFT: JAKE DITCHFIELD - SHOWROOM MANAGER, STEVEN HUME - DIRECTOR, KORALIA HUME – DIRECTOR

to our services but also to help people feel happier. People really matter to us! For example, last couple of times, we had a model in the bath on the front window, engaging with passers-by and restoring smiles on often rushed and stressed faces. Our showroom manager Jake Ditchfield, also likes to show his funny side and dresses in a boiler suit to engage with kids, giving away balloons and sweets. We are committed to our neighbourhood. It gives us a sense of belonging, helps us all grow within our environment and understand people’s needs better. It is a crucial experience for our innovation and growth. We also prefer to use local services to contribute to our country’s economy. Our branded candles are made by a local family run business, the cakes we serve during the events are also Wilmslow made, we print our marketing materials with a nearby printing shop; we stay local as much as possible. It’s one of our core values.

You work with some of the best quality suppliers, what is your process behind choosing them? We choose our suppliers carefully as they are key to our long term reputation and customer satisfaction. First, we like to work with manufacturers who are not motivated by short term gain but more in developing long term partnerships with us, like FLAIR SHOWERS. Good relationships, with efforts from both sides are the key to our family run business. Other key factors are being able to offer unique and attractive products that enhance our overall showroom, displays that engage customers and support to help our team understand products so that they can help homeowners make informed purchases. Reassuring guarantees, stock availability and after sales service are also vitally important. quarrybankboutiquebathrooms.com

What buying trends are you noticing this year? Homeowner purchasing has become more considered against the background of rising living costs. This said, quality as always shines through and our customers are still looking to invest in bathrooms that will stand the test of time and bring fresh focus to their interior with unique products. 91
