Where is home? And work? Home is at Norcliffe an 18th Century crook frame house surrounded by open countryside on the edge of the North Woods in Styal, which we have just finished renovating. It is accessed through a setting of parkland and particularly tranquil at the moment whilst C19 stifles Manchester Airport. Work too is here, just a short walk from home – the very best kind of commute. It was previously a tired overgrown joiner’s workshop which we have converted into a light open-plan architects drawing office with a huge new rooflight along the ridge. What did you want to be when you were younger? My father is an engineer with a family business and we worked through all the ideas of mechanical engineering, to civil engineering until I very happily grasped the notion of becoming an Architect at 12 years old. So, I did architectural work experience at 15 and selected my A levels (Art, Maths & Physics) for entrance to one of the top architecture schools – which I’m proud to say was in Manchester. I’m truly grateful to my parents for this guidance. Name a few of your favourite places to be... At home with my family or in the studio with my team. I didn’t buy a house when I bought Norcliffe, I bought a story. The previous owners had shared forty happy and homely years here and the feeling of ever-lasting happiness hit you as you walked through the door. If I could erase C19 right now a great place to get away from it all is Paris! La Tour d’Argent for dinner and Hotel Costes for a night or two with long days of walking around the city and enjoying the atmosphere and culture.

Prior to starting Annabelle Tugby Architects I enjoyed nine very happy years working at Stephenson Bell. On various projects, I worked closely with Roger Stephenson and I learnt a great deal from him - in my opinion, he is a living legend and really inspires me. His portfolio is a sight to behold, just visit stephenson-studio. com. and his latest piece is the new home he has created for Manchester Halle – another real gem! What was the last gift you gave someone? I had worked on one of my best friends new home, and we were delighted with the results, but the garden was looking so sad after all the building work. Just before lockdown, with summer approaching I wanted to give her something that would make an impact, so I filled the beautiful willow tree next to the large areas of glazing in the kitchen with fairy lights – at dusk, it looks stunning. Tell us a secret/fun fact? I used to be in the army! Okay, not the regulars, but the territorial army where I was recruited during fresher’s week in my first year at University. Who or what would you place in Room 101? Double yellow lines! What’s been your biggest life lesson? Be kind! I honestly feel that being kind might sound so simple, basic even, but it’s not and it will always come back to you eventually whichever way you take the advice. Or for something a little darker one of my friends who is a little more Machiavellian says “consistency is key”. In addition to the commercial crossbreed at the farm, they also have two different types of sheep in Tatton Park’s Parkland; Hebridean and Soay. What binge-worthy box set can you recommend? I will hold my hands up to say I watch Tiger King on Netflix. I often watch gripping documentaries like Innocent Files, or one of my favourites was “60 Day’s In” where 7 civilians enter a jail to gain information from inside.
What else have you been doing to keep yourself entertained? I’ve been working Monday to Friday so I’ve not really been struggling to entertain myself. I’ve been joining in family quiz time on Zoom. I’ve been self-isolating at my cousins home for company so we have found ourselves joining in club nights on a Friday where we dance around the living room. The weather has been great so we’ve had a couple of BBQ’s in the garden with a few cocktails. It’s been strange not inviting anyone so the cat got a good share of the food.
What home DIY have you attempted? Over the Easter weekend, my cousin asked me if it would be possible to clean out the gutters on top of the house so out came one large ladder and shaky legs. I have also been gardening which I found very therapeutic.
What new dish have you trialled in the kitchen? Food has been a big change for me, having more time in the
kitchen has been interesting. My cousin and I take turns and have now got ourselves in a routine which will be missed once we get back to some normality. My curry dishes have seen some improvements with more veg, creating my own curry sauce with spices was a worry but tasted great… I live to tell the tale.
I’m taking this time to focus on the things that matter the most What exercise routine have you got in place? Before lockdown I was up and in the gym every morning at 6 AM, this is a routine which was going to be the most missed for me. I decided to head out along the canal for a run, I enjoyed it so much that I logged online to purchase a pair of proper running shoes. I have now achieved my personal best 10K of a time 50 minutes. I have really got the taste for running, it clears your head and is something I will continue to do.
How have you been keeping in touch with friends and family? Keeping in touch has been better than ever before. I arranged a family get together on one of the current apps to include my two siblings and kids in the UK and my two siblings and kids who live in
Australia, along with my parents. This was actually a first time we have all done this sort of thing. It was noisy but great to see each other as a family. I’ve also built stronger relationships with my friends as we have all been playing games and catching up on a daily basis. Working from home is mentally challenging so having the chance to communicate more has been amazing.
What has been the main benefit of your lockdown? Cherishing time. I know what is happening is a terrible time for many and I do believe that this lockdown has given me time to press the reset button. The world spins too fast and we plan too much without thought, so I’m taking this time to focus on the things that matter the most. A break from the mad world, time to reflect and appreciate the good things we do have. I will look at life differently and I’m sure many people will and also seeing neighbourhoods come together has been incredible.
What is the first thing you want to do when the lockdown is over? Swim to Australia. joking aside, I was meant to have travelled to Australia to catch up with my brother, sister and their families over the Easter period. A good holiday will be needed and that is what I look forward to… sand in my toes and a cocktail at sunset whilst listening to the waves of the ocean. www.destinology.co.uk

We Love Good Times Limited What binge-worthy box set can you recommend? I have really got into The Witcher on Netflix and London Kills on iplayer and I really love to watch all of the really old food programmes and see our celeb chefs looking super young.
What else have you been doing to keep yourself entertained? To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever been so busy! I furloughed myself at the beginning of April so I have offered our services and platform FOC to anyone still trading in some capacity and to anyone else who needs us. I’ve been creating lots of new content and am really enjoying it. I have also really enjoyed sitting in the garden and reading a digital version of The Cheshire Magazine.
so it’s been quite easy, plus we all love crashing in the lounge together for movie time! It was Trolls World Tour last weekend which was epic.
What home DIY have you attempted? Nothing! But I have made a valiant effort with the spring cleaning!
What new dish have you trialled in the kitchen? We absolutely love a curry, so I have been experimenting on Mondays with the Sunday lunch leftovers with more Southern Indian recipes and they’ve gone down rather well!
What exercise routine have you got in place? We do our one hour a day daily walk and that’s about it! Its good to get away from the computer screen for an hour or so. We’ve been taking lots of photos and its definitely something that we’ll keep up when all of this is done.

How are you keeping the kids happy? We have Phil’s kids every other weekend and the weather has been pretty good so lots of playing outside, but these two are very self-sufficient
How have you been keeping in touch with friends and family?
I have thought about this quite a lot. I really believe that I needed a reset. We had relaunched the business late last year and we really hadn’t been able to become the business that I really wanted us to be, which is an edgy, playful lifestyle guide. This period has given me the chance to really think about how we want to look after and represent our clients in the future, and I really feel that this will be the right path for us. We just want to celebrate Good Times with good quality and unusual lifestyle businesses who do something really special.
What is the first thing you want to do when the lockdown is over? Ahh so many things! I want to go to Chester Zoo, and to have an icecream down by the river. Cocktails in Barlounge, coffee in Storyhouse and a lovely bottle of red in Paysan. I can’t wait to see all of our friends in the Hospitality Industry, I have missed them so much. www.wlgt.co.uk

What exercise routine have you got in place?
I have been watching way too many box sets during lockdown weekends. Favourites include Peaky Blinders, SS GB and Upload and for some fun, watching multiple seasons of Ru Paul’s Drag Race!
I have also been turning to social media to mix up my exercise routines, I am still working remotely every weekday, so I am using exercise to keep some form of daily routine in place. Depending on how I am feeling, I will turn to @BarrysUK or @ThirdSpaceLondon for a morning class or if I am feeling more relaxed, start the day with some light stretching or yoga.
What else have you been doing to keep yourself entertained? I have been trying to write as much as possible and keep creative. My baking and cooking skills have also definitely improved as I’ve been following online cookery classes live from locations around the world, trying to keep up and try something new.

What new dish have you trialled in the kitchen? I have tried a selection of new dishes, one each week actually with @Tuscanynowandmore on Instagram, as each week a chef showcases a new Italian dish with one of their private chefs and it’s really easy to follow. Which is exactly my kind of cooking. Plus there is usually a wine tasting session to go along with it, which is always a positive. My personal favourite so far has been Crespelle Alla Fiorentina - savoury pancakes with ricotta, pecorino and spinach, highly recommended.
What has been the main benefit of your lockdown? Definitely spending time with my husband, as we both work in travel, inevitably we were travelling pre lockdown a lot, which meant we weren’t getting as much quality time together as we would have liked, sometimes being away over weekends as well.
How have you been keeping in touch with friends and family? Every type of video call imaginable from Zoom and WhatsApp to Skype and House Party depending on how technically savvy the person on the other end is! We have been organising pub quizzes and also some fun games to play across the miles
What is the first thing you want to do when the lockdown is over? I am really missing my family and friends so I would love to be able to see them as soon as possible, as they are in Cheshire and I am in London, so although that may not be possible as soon as lockdown is lifted, depending on the rules, I will be heading up to see them as soon as I can. www.ophirpr.co.uk

While we are still unsure of when the schools may reopen, parents of young children are finding it difficult to keep-up with home schooling and trying to work out the best way to cope. If your children are at home with you and you’re concerned that they keep up with their school work, education expert and former primary school teacher Becky Cranham of www.planbee.com has some top tips to help kids keep busy, active and learning. Nurture Nature Planting seeds and watching them sprout and grow is always rewarding. And you don’t need a garden. Pop some multi-purpose compost in a plant pot, plastic cup or old yogurt pot, sprinkle the seeds in and cover with compost. Encourage your child to take responsibility for making sure the plant has enough water and sunlight and challenge them to record what happens to the seed each day. Make them an Expert Are they crazy about LEGO? Challenge them to find out when it was invented, by who and how it became so popular. Do they love singing and dancing? Challenge them to write and perform their own songs, or even create a music video. Crazy about science? Challenge them to put together a demonstration or presentation about their favourite scientist. Telling a Story Ask children to pick a main character, a setting and a special object and let their imaginations run riot! To present them to the world too, they could stick with
the good old traditional pen and paper or try creating an eBook. Book Creator is a great free app. Keep Reading Check out www.getepic.com which has access to 35,000 children’s books, learning videos, quizzes and more. Encourage your child to act out the finished story or create a puppet show. Model Making Use playdough or modelling clay to make a model of the solar system or to show the animals and plants in a habitat or food chain. Or use recycled objects, such as boxes, food packaging, bubble wrap, newspaper to make a medieval castle, a spaceship, a dinosaur or a Tudor galleon.
BETTER NIGHTS SLEEP
As many of us are still working from home during this period, our routine and sleep pattern may have changed. Here we list some ideas to ensure you get a good sleep every night. Get into a Routine Go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time every day. Help your body get into a sleep rhythm by establishing a bedtime routine that promotes sleep. Take a warm bath, have a light snack or do some reading each night to wind down. Avoid Blue Light “Blocking blue light before bed can transform sleep.

This can disrupt the brain’s natural sleep-wake cycle leading to a poor night sleep,” advises Leading London Nutritionist Lily Soutter. www.lilysoutternutrition.com Create an Atmosphere that Promotes Sleep Make changes to your bedroom to make it more conducive to sleep. Darken the room as much as possible and keep it quiet and cool. Make sure your bed and pillows are comfortable for you. Perhaps the most important change that can be made to a bedroom is to keep activity out of the bed that shouldn’t be there. Don’t check emails on your phone or computer in bed. Watch television and read books in another room. Help your body prepare for sleep by making the room and bed a place where you only sleep. Stop Exercising Late Getting sweaty with exercise is a great way to relieve stress as it releases feel-good chemicals, but it’s important to not exercise too late. “Try to exercise early in the day. Exercise can be extremely stimulating and some women find it difficult to sleep following a late work out session,” Dr. Marilyn Glenville.
Choose the Right Time to Eat Your body does its best digestion when you’re upright—not curled up in bed. Going to bed with a full stomach makes you seven times more likely to suffer from uncomfortable issues like acid reflux or heartburn that can keep you awake.
HOW BRITS ARE SPENDING TIME IN LOCKDOWN
The internet is awash with people sharing new tricks they’re trying to learn with all the extra time they have on their hands. Trusted data provider www.semrush.com has found the public are searching for skills on Google. The data shows Brits are a nation
of gardeners, linguists, bakers, gymnasts as well as the terms most searched for related to lockdown. Sign Language Gets the Thumbs up from Brits Since the beginning of lockdown, there has been a significant rise in people searching how to learn a new language. Interestingly, whilst “how to learn French” (6,800 searches) and “how to learn Spanish” (7,910 searches) prove popular, the most searched for was “how to learn sign language” with over 12,290 in March 2020. Public Go Bananas for Baking The nation has gone baking mad whilst placed in isolation. SEMrush has looked at the types of recipes searched for online and found that lockdown in March caused an increase of 74% in the total volume of searches for recipes. It seems the public are turning to comfort food more so than healthy food, with searches for “salad recipes” featuring way down in 83rd place. Surge in Self-Sufficient Brits Seeking Spuds Data looking British gardening habits shows a dramatic increase in the numbers of people looking to grow their own fruit and veg during lockdown. The new data shows that in March alone, there were 1,417,000 garden-related searches by shutdown Brits, many of them looking for tips on how to grow your own fruit and vegetables. With online searches for ‘how to grow potatoes’ increasing by 834%, onions at 407% and carrots and tomatoes, both up 406% month on month, it’s obvious to see which larder staples Brits don’t want to face dinner without. Ambitiously – there has also been a dramatic spike in people searching for how to grow their own avocados, up 83%.

Celebrity hairdresser Andrew Collinge shares his expert advice on looking after your hair whilst salons remain closed
BLOW-DRY TIPS The secret to a successful smooth blow-dry is to dry the root area first and to then have a good drying technique for a sleek finish. To start the process I apply a little CO by Andrew Collinge Argan Oil to towel-dried hair. I then take a paddle brush and work the roots backwards and forwards whilst directing the heat close to the brush. This technique will help remove any kinks and waves. Once done, take medium sections of hair into the paddle brush and direct the nozzle of the dryer parallel to the brush. Continue the blow-dry section by section. A video tutorial can be found on Instagram @andrew_collinge
BARREL CURLS For those with medium to longer length hair try this simple but incredibly effective styling technique of barrel curls. The result will be a hairstyle of natural-looking curls and waves. Apply a mousse or blow-dry lotion to towel-dried hair and scrunch dry. When the hair is approximately 90 per cent dry and still warm, take a small section of hair and make the ends into a small circle. Now, wind the hair down from the ends and rotate

around the circle, pinching it in place with the thumb and forefinger as you move down towards the scalp and secure the section in place with a grip. Carry on this technique around the head. Once done apply a little hairspray and then a bit of heat to each section. Let the sections cool down completely and then remove the grips. Tip your head forward and rake your fingers through your hair from roots to tips. Now throw your head back to release a tumble of beautiful waves. See this look created on Instagram @andrew_collinge

CURLS AND WAVES Curls and waves are a great way to reduce length and to cope with longer fringes and growing out roots. Both these tousled styles are easy to maintain and are a fabulous look as we move into summer. First apply mousse or blow-dry lotion to freshly washed towel dried hair. To start the drying process, tip your head upside down and with the hairdryer on a medium heat setting, direct the nozzle at the root areas and work evenly around the head. Next, bring your head back and take a handful of hair and scrunch it into the palm of your hand, apply heat and let the hair cool down completely before releasing it from your palm. Continue this process section by section around the head. Once done, tip your head upside down and apply some more heat to the roots and midsections. Then again repeat the scrunch drying technique. Don’t rush this process and occasionally leave the hair alone and carry on with something else. Towards the end scrunch sections without applying any heat. To complete the look work a little serum or light gel to define the curls.
COPING WITH FRINGES As fringes get longer and salons remain closed, try this asymmetric look to accommodate your longer fringe. Simply move to a low parting and style your hair casually to one side. The rest of the hair will grow into a more tousled look and a simple trick is to tuck some of the sides behind the ear.

Charm Annie Haak, Managing Director at Annie Haak Designs shares the secrets to her success
B
usiness owner Annie Haak can be rightfully proud of what she has achieved, creating enchanting bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings that are much sought-after and now worn by a host of celebrities including Joanna Lumley, Jodie Whittaker, Binky Felstead and Fearne Cotton.
What led you in to your industry? Despair and determination! I had been an artist all my life and made and sold items in craft shows and the like. I also had a very small website selling my crafts, until the day I popped on some silver bracelets, it just went mad and I could see that sterling silver jewellery was the way to go. This all started in Bali when my husband was critically injured in the hospital. I spent two weeks by his bedside and found myself drawing charms, one of which was a Guardian Angel
which I needed (which is now my signature charm). Then a taxi driver kindly introduced me to his nephew, a silversmith. This is how I started; with ten charms at the beginning and now we order thousands from several silversmiths including Kadek (the very first one I met through the taxi driver), who was instrumental for me getting into this industry.

Who was an early business inspiration for you? This is easy, it was my deceased brother Peter whom I think about every day. He was one of the founders of the chain store Game in the UK. I remember clearly when he started talking to me about his dream, he achieved it along with his partner. A multi-million-pound chain of stores, it was incredible and so exciting to watch his dedication to his business. He had the most special personality and was loved by those who worked for him. I think of him every day especially when the business is challenging. My motto charm ‘Dream, Believe, Achieve’ is dedicated to him.
What’s the best piece of business advice you’ve ever received? Without sounding arrogant, over the years I was open to a lot of advice and still am. Looking back, there has been good and bad advice, so now I go on with my gut feeling, always watching the cash flow and making decisions based on the truth of where the business is. I believe the first time I went against everyone’s advice, which was terrifying, but I know I needed
to do it, was when I mortgaged my house so that I had finances for the business. This was the best thing I have ever done and thankfully this huge gamble has paid off.
What’s the secret of great leadership? Respect everybody you encounter on the journey of your business.
What’s the most significant leadership lesson you’ve learnt? Embrace my skills in jewellery design and believe in myself, whilst being honest and respectful in everything that I do.
Has there been a truly pivotal moment for the business? When I was featured in Weekend Daily Mail magazine with the Sama My Guardian Angel Bracelet Stack shortly after the brand was launched. isting a restaurant with friends or family is one of my favourite things to do and whilst that currently is not an option, enjoying restaurant-quality meals at home is. The Black Dog Chester is located on Whitchurch Road in Waverton and offers a takeaway or collection service on Thursdays through to Sundays. Their most popular offerings are their 2 for 1 burger/pizza nights on a Friday and Saturday, but the restaurant also offers fine dining, traditional classic British dishes and an incredible Sunday lunch with all the trimmings (yes, including pigs in blankets!). The venue has recently released The Black Dog Afternoon Tea which is a selection of Finger Sandwiches, Homemade Cakes, Macaroons, Fruit Scones, Clotted Cream and Jams, perfect for a picnic. The Black Dog also provides a children's fun meal, meaning the whole family can enjoy this service. OUR EXPERIENCE The venue is working from a time slot system, where customers pre-order online and choose a
time slot for delivery or collection. I opted to collect my meals. The Black Dog was easy to find and I was impressed by how well thought out the social distancing collection system was. Once home, I was keen to get eating. The first thing I noticed was the quality of the packaging. Each course was perfectly presented in its own reheat box which (due to the quality of the packaging) didn't actually need to be reheated. The portion sizes for each course were incredibly generous. For our starter, I tried the Ham and Parmesan Croquette and Crispy Cod Cheeks and I can honestly say I have never had better cod cheeks in my life. For our main, I opted for the succulent Medium Supreme of Chicken which came with a creamy Fondant Potato, Beetroot Puree, Roasted Baby Carrots, Glazed Shallot and a tasty jus. My lockdown dining partner
opted for the Pave Rump Steak which came served With Skin On Fries Confit Tomato and Mushroom. Both courses had generous portion sizes but in the name of gluttony, we soldiered on to try our desserts. To finish I opted for A Trio of Mini Chocolate Desserts which included a white chocolate truffle and a gorgeous chocolate and orange tartlet. My dining partner opted for the Lemon and White Chocolate Pavlova which was a delicious gluten-free option that included pistachio dust and mixed berries. We are already planning our next meal. With perfectly presented and packaged meals and a safe service, The Black Dog Chester is a prime example of how you can enjoy fine dining at home, without having to cook. itting next to Bolton Abbey, The Devonshire Arms & Spa with its exquisite gardens, beautiful sitting rooms, five-star dining and luxurious spa is one of the most exclusive venues in Yorkshire and I was excited about my stay. The hotel was built in the early 17th century, though there had been a place of hospitality on this site for much longer than that. It came into the ownership of the 4th Duke of Devonshire in 1753 as part of the Bolton Abbey Estate and was further developed by the 5th Duke, a man well ahead of his time. He realised the importance of visitors to the area and ensured many miles of footpaths were established so that visitors could admire the splendid views. The area attracted poets and artists alike, including Wordsworth and Turner. During the 19th century, the Royal Family would stay at Bolton Abbey for grouse shoots. In 1981 the hotel underwent a major refurbishment and additional bedrooms were added, under the supervision of Her Grace the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire. Her personal touch is still evident throughout and much of the artwork has come from Chatsworth’s Devonshire Collection, one of the finest private art collections in Europe, making the ideal choice for an array of important private and public occasions and events. On arrival, the drive up to the hotel was breathtakingly pretty. The entrance hall welcomed with a grand open fire which was a sight for sore eyes given the unpredictable British weather. The entrance also felt homely with wellington boots of all sizes at the ready for your use at the door.

The Devonshire Arms Hotel & Spa Hayley Murray travelled to the glorious sloping Dales for a luxury spa break The staff were incredibly inviting and relaxed and assisted us to our room. We stayed in a Classic Room (which are mostly located in the new wing of the hotel) which offer superb garden views, with many overlooking the Italian box garden or the landscaped area surrounding the hotel. The bedrooms are individually designed in a classic contemporary style and all enjoy 5ft king-size beds (with some twin beds an option where requested). Private cottages and superior rooms, luxury rooms and suites are also available. We explored the grounds during our downtime and admired the beautiful scenery. We then went on to relax in the lounge to have pre-dinner drinks. The evening meal was something I was most looking forward to, with an eight-course taster menu prepared by award-winning Peter Howarth who had recently taken over as Head Chef. We dined in The Burlington which

specialises in seasonal and ever-changing tasting menus. From homegrown fruit and vegetables from the hotel’s own kitchen garden, to produce reared and caught on the estate, each and every ingredient is carefully considered from seed to plate. These ingredients are then cooked skilfully by Peter and his team, who take pride in creating special dining experiences for the guest, with Peter especially creating a vegan menu for my husband. I had a wonderful mixture of fish and meat, the food was well presented and tasted exquisite. With quail to start followed by Morecambe Bay seabass, Saint Austell mussels, sardine purÊe and Alsace bacon, these were my favourites. Then onto a beef dish, tartare of Hereford beef was simply stunning. Scallops with crab came next with charred cabbage and then mountain yam which was divine. Roasted Scottish venison with parsley root, charred leek and juniper jus was the last of the mains before going onto a savoury dish. The sweet was calamansi parfait with a banana mouse which was an incredible dessert. With a wonderful night's sleep, the next day we indulged in a spa visit. The Devonshire Spa is housed in an ancient barn, adjacent to the Devonshire Arms Hotel. There are four generously-sized therapy rooms, an indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, Rasul temple, relaxation space and lounge, with views over the countryside. For those fitness fanatics, you can also find a separate gym next door with cardio, weights and resistance zones. The hotel has won countless awards including 3 AA rosettes and The White Rose Awards Large Hotel of The Year. Private Island in the Thames Alexandra Delf visited Bray on Thames for some monks, monkeys and floating spas
L
ooking for a unique, private island getaway? There may be one closer than you think. Despite the exotic name and private island status, Monkey Island Estate is extremely accessible, based here in the UK, located within walking distance from one of the country’s gourmet hotspots. Situated in Bray on Thames, this mysterious island, located as the name suggests in the River Thames has a fascinating history dating back 800 years as the haunt of monks, monarchs, aristocrats and writers alike. The story of this historic location ebbs and flows through time and it has enjoyed many
incarnations through the years surrounded by the river. The property has been home to a small band of monks, a fishing retreat for the 3rd Duke of Marlborough, visits from King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, and a variety of celebrities of the day from actors and singers to high society. Known most recently as a gourmet hotspot through the 1980s it was, until 2015, a forgotten location until it was admired and given a new lease of life by the Chairman of the YTL corporation. After much love and attention, the white bricked Pavilion and Temple buildings located on Monkey Island have been restored to offer 41 carefully considered boutique hotel rooms and private residences. It’s not simply the Pavilion and Temple buildings which have received loving renovations, the property is set on seven acres, comprising curated gardens and quintessentially British countryside. The

grounds have been carefully restored with the help of resident YTL Hotel’s horticulturalist Bradley Burgess, who also offers a personalised tour of the grounds to re-create elements of Monkey Island’s gardens at home. The focus on the gardens is reflected through many areas of the property including potions in the spa, teas and infusions in the bar and carefully curated gourmet in the kitchens. A key aspect of the gardens is the medicinal plants and herbs which can be found growing throughout the property. They line the wildflower garden path which winds its way along the riverbank to the Floating Spa, a restored barge which offers a unique selection of treatments completely based on the water. The barge itself is moored to the banks and the treatment rooms and Remedy Bar, which is based on the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries’ barge which traded on the
Thames in the 1700s, offers a bright and airy sanctuary in which to retreat and relax. The treatments themselves take either from the healing energies of the water surrounding the spa or play on the history of the island. For example, one treatment is inspired by the monks who once inhabited the island and its riverine surrounds, The Monks Elixir – Booze, Botany and Beauty includes an ‘Elixir Tasting’ of one of the monk-brewed ancient herbal tonics: Chartreuse, D.O.M Benedictine or Frangelico. Most of the treatments make use of housecured herbal oils which come from the estate’s gardens or The Experimental Teahouse located on the property, tapping into nature’s healing powers.

Further treatments have been created in partnership with spa brand Moss of the Isles and include The Floating Massage, an usual treatment which combines the relief of deep-seated tension with the sensation of floating on water through specially designed aqua cushions. The room itself is awash with blue light, mimicking the gentle surrounding waters and complementing the scents of a variety of powerful essential oils such as arnica, ginger and rosemary. The healing powers of nature extend not only to the spa but can also be found within the gourmet offering available at Monkey Island Brasserie. Although Bray itself is known as a foodie haven as the only village in the world to lay claim to three Michelin-starred

restaurants, Monkey Island adds a homegrown twist to the flavours in its Modern British menu. By utilising tinctures from herbs, spices and teas grown on-site, these are then woven into the extraordinary cocktail menu and the main restaurant menu. The Bray Blossom cocktail uses homemade ginger cordial and fresh Sakura flowers. Teas and herbs are not the only homemade delicacies to be found as an exploration of the grounds reveal fresh eggs from hens named after iconic female figures from the past, beehives creating on-site honey, and a smokehouse for the creation of Monkey Island Estate Smoked Salmon. The care and attention which has been invested in this property is evident throughout and it’s incredible to think that until recently this exclusive island had been uninhabited. It was only when the founder of YTL group Yeoh Tiong Lay gazed upon it that a passion project was initiated, one that unfortunately he would not live to see completed. A statue in his memory has been erected overlooking the property and is a reminder of the hard work and dedication which has been invested to restore the property and the island itself to its former glory. www.monkeyislandestate.co.uk

BACK TO THE FUTURE Reinstating the ancient art of coachbuilding, Mulliner has taken the already great Bentley Continental and made something incredible
T
he process of buying a car might seem impenetrable, what with all the customisation options and finance deals and haggling, but in many ways we have it good. If you want a Bentley, you turn up at your nearest dealer, choose your colour and hand over the money. But once upon a time things were much more complex. Back then, you told Bentley you wanted a car and the company would present you with a chassis, on which you would find some wheels and an engine. If you wanted bodywork, you needed a coachbuilder, and Mulliner was the cajones of the coachbuilding canine — even James Bond used the firm. More recently, though, it has simply become a division of Bentley that personalises Bentaygas for reality TV stars. Until now, that is. Because Mulliner is back with the new Bacalar. Just 12 of these open-top grand tourers are being made, and all have already been allocated. Crafted here in Cheshire, in the world’s first certified carbon-neutral factory for luxury car production, the cars are powered by a not-at-all carbon neutral 6.0-litre W12 petrol engine, which produces CO2 and power in equally large measures. And with turbocharging, there’s plenty of power. A whole 650bhp. But while there’s plenty of performance, I’m afraid there’s no roof. More important than all that, though, is the 4.0-litre V8, which now gets electrical assistance in the shape of a mild-hybrid system, which gives the engine a helping hand when accelerating. ESTATE OF PLAY Getting a bit bored of SUVs? James Fossdyke thinks the Volvo V60 Cross Country might be the answer
I
t’s strange how things slip in and out of fashion. Once upon a time, we thought flares were all the rage, while uber-cool hippies cruised around in camper vans that emitted smoke from the windows and exhausts. Then all that rather went away, and the coolest members of society suddenly turned up with spiky pink hair and jackets made from bin liners. Now, though, the hippy movement seems to be making a return as we rail against conspicuous consumption and attempt to protect the polar bears in any way we can. But as we strive to recycle more and pollute less, our buying habits have changed. And not always for the better. Yes, we’re ditching single-use plastics and harnessing the wind to produce electricity, but we’re increasingly choosing to drive thirstier and more polluting cars. These days, one in three new cars sold in Europe is an SUV. And that’s a bad thing because although some of them are very capable and most have nice high driving positions that give you an air of imperiousness and status, they also tend to be bigger, heavier and more polluting than the equivalent saloon car. And despite appearances, the ones that drive well on the road aren’t always very good off it. But they’re safer, right? Again, not always. Remember the Jeep Wrangler I drove a while ago? That car has a one-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. The Alfa Romeo Giulia saloon, with which the Wrangler shares an engine, got five stars and scored a massive 98 per cent for adult occupant protection. Even a BMW X5 can’t

match that. But though crash protection may not be the Wrangler’s strong suit, it still makes more sense than most because it is at least capable off-road. The cheapest Range Rover Evoque doesn’t even come with four-wheel drive, so a BMW 1 Series will probably be just as much use on a muddy field or a snow-covered A-road. It’ll be more economical and just as practical, too. So what if you want something roomy and safe and cool that will cope when the white stuff starts to fall? The answer, I think, lies before your eyes, and it’s called the Volvo V60 Cross Country. Admittedly, that sentence might not sit well with those who remember the boxy Volvo estates of old, but this is the new Volvo. These days, the Swedish company is channelling its inner Britt Ekland and building some staggeringly good-looking cars. Minimalist, svelte and striking in equal measure, they’re as Scandinavian as a salmon in a sauna, and they’re all the better for it. To my eyes, the V60 estate (that’s Volvo’s answer to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate, for those unaccustomed to the Swedish company’s range) is the sexiest of the lot. The Cross Country version is even better, with slightly raised suspension and beefier bodywork. It has four-wheel-drive, too, so the engineering can cash whatever cheque the bodywork is writing. And if you thought the outside was good, it’s got nothing on the inside. It’s as simple and spacious and stylish as IKEA’s finest, but much better built. Volvos have always been solid, but these days they’re really upmarket, with a huge,

high-tech touchscreen and an even bigger digital instrument cluster in front of the driver. Once upon a time, Volvo screens had the graphics from a PlayStation2, but now they’re as crisp and as cool as a Swedish snowbank. But although the styling might not match Volvos of old, the practicality certainly does. With all five seats upright, the boot is bigger than you’ll find in a BMW X3 or a Mercedes-Benz GLC. And if you fold down the rear seats, you’ll find that space more than doubles. Kids’ sports kit, musical instruments, dogs… It’ll swallow pretty much anything you throw at it. And there’s bags of space for humans, too. The front seats are big and plush and comfortable, while the rear seats don’t go short of legroom or headroom. But if, for some reason, you want something bigger still, you

could always have this thing’s big brother – the V90 Cross Country. Sitting a tier above the V60 in the Volvo hierarchy, it’s even more spacious, but the extra length makes the proportions look a bit odd. It’s still a great car, though. As is the V60. Refreshingly, it’s designed not to be sporty in any way, and as much as I love supercars, that’s fine by me. What you need is something that’s quiet and comfy, letting you listen to your podcasts in peace, and the V60 scores well in that department. Admittedly, the 2.0-litre petrol engine doesn’t make an especially attractive sound, but at least it isn’t too loud. And its 247bhp output means the V60 has pace to burn, so you never need to put your foot down too hard. Even so, it still burns through fuel at a fair lick. Volvo says it’ll do about 35mpg, which isn’t brilliant for an estate car, so if you’re worried about the fuel bills, though, the 188bhp ‘D4’ diesel version might be a better bet. Although it’s still kinder to both the planet and your wallet than a BMW X3 or Audi Q5 with a similar engine. It’ll be just as useful off-road, too,

taking on everything you’d ever ask of it and winning. Muddy fields and farm tracks are no problem thanks to the raised suspension, which gives you about 20cm of ground clearance, and a four-wheel-drive system that means you almost always have traction. You certainly won’t have to worry about getting snowed in. Where it won’t match some SUVs, though, is on the seating front. There’s no option of seven seats here, and similarly priced cars such as the Land Rover Discovery Sport do give you that flexibility. Unless you really do need those ‘occasional’ seats at the back, though, you won’t find much to complain about. So with that small caveat in mind, and unless you’re desperate to sit three miles above the road, this is where the smart money is spent. Yes, SUVs might have a bit more kudos, but the Volvo is better looking and better to drive than just about all of them. And when Greta and/or the government finally turn their sights on the Chelsea tractors, you’ll be happy in the knowledge that your car has all the ability of a big 4x4, but you’re getting none of the abuse.

The Importance of
a Will & Power of Attorney Chester based solicitors, Jolliffes explains why now is the best time to sort out your estate
T
he Ministry of Justice is examining ways to relax rules around will writing in England and Wales following a surge in the number of people making preparations for their final farewell, due to COVID-19. Currently, for a will to be valid, it must be signed by two witnesses present at the same time, and the witnesses must be independent and not related to the person to whom the will applies. Under current social distancing measures, especially for those in isolation at home or in hospital, it is almost impossible to adhere to the rules. The Ministry of Justice is now looking at a temporary relaxation in the rules, which could involve reducing the number of witnesses required, or possibly accepting other solutions, such as video witnessing.
But why is a will so important? Your will tells everyone what should happen to your money, possessions and property after you die (all these things together are called your ‘estate’). If you don’t leave a will, the law decides how your estate is passed on – and this might not be in line with your wishes.
And what is a power of attorney? Putting in place a power of attorney can give you peace of mind that someone you trust is in charge of your affairs if the worst were to happen. There are two types to consider: one for finance and property, and another for health and welfare. Your representative should only ever make a choice for you if you’re unable to make that specific decision at the time that it needs to be made. For example, if you fall into a coma, your representative would start looking after your affairs. Yet if you wake from the coma, you should be able to make your own decisions again. We don’t mean to be morbid, but in these incredibly uncertain times, along with a relaxation in the rules from the Ministry of Justice, now is the perfect time to put your mind at rest with a will and power of attorney. I WANDERED LONELY
AS A CLOUD Our gardening expert, Tom Bannister, looks into creating a wild meadow in your garden and truly bringing it to life
I
can’t think of anything in the world that gives me a sense of joy the same way a wildflower meadow does. These habitats are Mother Nature’s very own tapestries, rich in colour, texture and wildlife. A living, breathing William Morris piece if you like. The best thing is, these living tapestries can easily be created in our own gardens no matter how big or small. Although mesmerising to observe, meadows are not just there to provide us with a beautiful display, if we scratch below the surface, we can see they’re actually sustaining our very existence. Wildflower meadows produce bio-diverse habitats, supporting birds, mammals, bees, butterflies and many other invertebrate species. These meadows provide food for our pollinators and they, in turn, work hard to provide food for us. Since the end of the Second World War 75 years ago, the UK has lost 97 per cent of these naturally occurring wildlife havens. 7.5 million acres of land (or an area one and half times the size of Wales) has disappeared due to rising population and the need for intense farming. Our wildlife is without doubt feeling the effects. With the rise in popularity of artificial lawns and so-called ‘low maintenance’ gardens, places for our wildlife to retreat are dwindling fast and they’re relying on us to find a better balance. We have around 23 million gardens in the UK and we can all take part in replenishing this loss. It’s very easy to create REAL low maintenance gardens that are beautiful to look at, will only need minimal watering, offer long flowering periods and have the added benefit of creating a home for our wildlife.

They are also pretty wonderful places for us to sit and unwind after a long day at the office. When visiting potential clients, many of them tell me they want a beautiful garden with minimal maintenance. This can be quite a challenge, as, like anything, gardens need some care and attention. Creating a meadow though could be a good solution to help deal with part of this conundrum. Sowing a meadow ticks many boxes for the low maintenance gardener. An established meadow requires no watering, will only need cutting a handful of times in the year, is spectacular visually, and in large parts, takes care of itself. The wildlife will also thank you for it! Whenever I mention wildflower gardens to customers, images of old-fashioned, high maintenance, somewhat complicated gardens are conjured up and perhaps its difficult to see how this fits into our modern lives and home. It really doesn’t

need to be something to worry about. There is definitely room for the meadow in a contemporary setting. The best gardens for me cater for all of our entertaining needs with beautiful, expansive hard landscaping but it is paramount that great planting surrounds the hard landscaping details. A welldesigned planting scheme brings out the best in the materials whilst making them sit comfortably in their surroundings. Good trees and large planting beds create that transition between the hard and the soft whilst helping to blend the garden into the landscape beyond. It’s this balance that makes the best designs work. Here are some things to think about when creating your wildlife haven

It might sound hard to believe but meadows prefer poor, impoverished soil to thrive. This helps prevent competitive grasses outgrowing the flowers. It will also avoid any one species becoming overly dominant. To achieve this it might mean stripping the existing topsoil away before sowing but important to make sure it’s not fertile.

The two most common ways to start a meadow are to sow from seed or to lay a pre-made roll of meadow turf. The first method is to sow your own from a packet of seed into poor, weed free soil. To establish from here will require more effort than the turf but is a much cheaper process. The ready established turf is more expensive than the seed but the results are almost guaranteed. As long as you keep it watered in the early stages, you and the wildlife will be enjoying the benefits in no time. Sowing is best done in autumn.

For most meadows mixes, you will need to choose a location that is open with plenty of sunshine. An old lawn that has been cut for many years with the clippings removed and no added fertiliser could be the ideal starting point.

If you are going to take the route of sowing your own, because the sowing is so thin it’s best to mix the seed with dry silver sand (the type used for block paving). Do not use builders’ sand as it is not fine enough and is usually too damp. Pale-coloured sand helps you see areas that you’ve already sown and whether you’ve missed anywhere. The correct ratio is usually three-five parts sand to one of seed. Just scatter the seed as you walk across the ground. To try and get an even coverage, split your seeds into batches and sow one batch walking in one direction and another batch walking at 90 degrees.

A good wildflower mix will include birds-foot trefoil, common sorrel, cowslip, field scabious, meadow buttercup, ox-eye daisy, red clover, wild carrot, yarrow plus a range of wild grasses (not lawn grasses). And the magic ingredient to keep your eye for is yellow rattle. Yellow rattle has the ability to reduce the vigour of the grasses which in turn will help the flowers to do their thing.

Meadows do evolve. Some species that are strong initially may make way for other species as the years go by. Bees and butterflies will be particularly attracted to this area of the garden. Birds will feed there and bats may skim over the top. It will become one of the most life-filled parts of your garden. ART DECO Renowned Parisian architect Laurent Maugoust, mixed Parisian style with modern contemporary design in his refurnishing of Hotel Victor Hugo Paris Kléber
S
ituated between the Champs-Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe, stands a beautiful Art Deco building and within the four-star Parisian private property, Hotel Victor Hugo. The owner, Jacques Blanc is passionate about Art Deco and called upon Laurent Maugoust to refurnish and renovate this building and hotel. The architect was given carte blanche but describes his design inspiration came from imagining this ‘… timeless boutique hotel as an extension of the home, where we invite our friends to stay’. While respecting the 1930s spirit of the building, Maugoust combines innovative and trendy with welcoming chic, continuing the

history but creating the welcome sought by its clientéle. The modernity comes from creating space within the building, opening-up the entrance hall and working with perspectives, such as the carpet marble floor of the lobby and the Art Deco patterns of the front door that reflect the exterior architecture. And the chromatic range of the Art Deco heritage - black, white, gold - is retained in spite of an injection of colour and pattern, as can be seen from the entrance hall. Here, the black Art Deco inspired screen in a floral pattern fits perfectly with the contemporary golden velvet armchairs and modern brushed aged brass and marble side table. The lobby has been designed to accommodate versatile, warm spaces where you want to meet, have breakfast, a drink or discover the works of art. The result is an exoticism and peacefulness to the Art Deco. Particular attention has been taken in the selection of ‘singular and eclectic materials such as raffia, grained leather, marble, velvet, satin, polished glass, lacquered wood and metal to create a timeless elegant address’. Tell us a little about yourself… Born on the Wirral, Cheshire I started my working life at a stockbroker in Liverpool before transferring up to Edinburgh where I lived for 12 years and where my son was born. I then relocated to Alderley Edge where I decided a new career in estate agency was the perfect opportunity to build some local knowledge and interact with the community. I have always loved property and have spent a lot of time renovating and upgrading my own homes and was therefore delighted to get a part time job at a local estate agent. I love my career and I have now been in the business 24 years! John set up John N Hilditch & Co in 1996 and I joined the company in 2001. I am extremely proud that for the second consecutive year John Hilditch & Co has won the British Property Awards for the Altrincham area. The award was independently judged on our outstanding customer service, sales and prices achieved. What do you love most about the properties in Cheshire? I love working in Hale as the property stock is so diverse. One minute you will be showing a £3,000,000 new build home the next a smaller period terrace or apartment. What is your greatest achievement and what made it so special? My greatest moment in the business must be selling a property where all the proceeds went to the North West Air Ambulance charity. It was the biggest bequest the charity had ever received and it was such a privilege to be part of it.
What do you see as the biggest challenge facing estate and lettings agents at the moment? The current Brexit situation has created uncertainty causing paralysis by analysis. This said, the less motivated buyers have now taken a back seat however the more motivated clientele are still purchasing, and we haven’t seen a major fall off in sales. If you became Housing Minister for a day what would you change? Obviously stamp duty, which is a huge burden for the young. There has been much talk about switching the burden from the purchaser to the seller and I think this is a good idea as it would free all first time buyers from any duty. There would still need to be a tax for people with second homes and buy-to-let purchasers, though. What makes the perfect home? For me, it’s a happy home with lots of light and ease of maintenance. I also love a garden and a space to relax after a hard day’s work. www.jhilditch.com

I love relaxing with friends and family over a glass of wine and enjoying the beautiful Cheshire countryside and amenities we have on our doorstep. What’s your dream purchase? A property, of course!
