My life ... STEVEN OGDEN, GENERAL MANAGER AT THE CHESTER GROSVENOR

How would you describe yourself ? I would describe myself as hard working, creative, ambitious and progressive. I enjoy taking care of people, I am driven, enthusiastic, friendly and love to have a plan. Where is home? And work? I grew up in Southport but moved to the Lake District when I started my first hotel role. After years of working in various locations including North Wales, Lenham in Kent, Bagshot in Surrey and Jersey in the Channel Islands, I decided to settle in Cheshire with my wife, Victoria and my children, Ella and Ben. It’s so lovely to work in such a renowned hotel in the beautiful city of Chester, that’s so close to home. What would you do to improve the area you live in? I would organise social events to help to improve community connections and share ideas on how we can all help each other and create more community spirit. What did you want to be when you were younger? I had many aspirations when I was young, I wanted to do all sorts of things from being a racing car driver, a cricketer and a carpenter. My interest in hospitality began when I worked at a golf club in Southport where my love of cooking, service and taking care of people became my ambition. Name a few of your favourite places to be... Jersey in the Channel Islands holds very special memories for me. I lived in St Brelades Bay for three years and loved island life. I went to Mauritius for my honeymoon and hope to go back there one day. Cuba and Grenada are so beautiful and I visit Cyprus and Turkey frequently. City breaks are on

my bucket list, and I have a list of places I would like to visit. The Fox and Barrel in Cotebrook, is my favourite place to eat locally. The food is excellent, and we always feel so welcome there. When I do get time with my family, we have a lovely walk we go on in Delamare Forest and I also like to cycle along Whitegate Way. Cheshire has so many rural attractions, my children love ice cream from Snugburys. What or who inspires you? I have been inspired throughout my career, mainly by hoteliers I have worked with; Christopher Curry, Danny Pecorelli, Peter Atherton, Gregor Ritchie, Douglas Waddell, all well known professionals within my industry. What was the last gift you gave someone? I have just visited Harry Potter World with my family, and my son just had to have a wand! Tell us a secret/fun fact. I like fixing anything that is broken. Who or what would you place in room 101? Overcooked food and any kind of medical emergency involving blood! Your mastermind subject? This would have to be cars and of course, food. What’s been your biggest life lesson? Always be honest and live your life to the full, have something to look forward to. chestergrosvenor.com 13

TRENTHAM LIVE 202 3 Ahead of his performance in Staffordshire this August, Jake Khan speaks to Jake Bugg about what fans can expect and his future music plans

Trentham Live is coming up in August how are you feeling about it and what can fans expect? |’m really excited about it, to be honest – I did a little tour last year but don’t have too many gigs this year so really looking forward to it. We always try and give a bit of everything fans want to hear, so they can expect some new stuff, but definitely some older stuff in there and try and we’ll keep it more up-tempo.

Who will be joining you on stage? I’ve got my original band which I’ve had for almost ten years since I started out, so hopefully we will be sounding good and well prepared and put a real nice set together for the audience. I use a lot of the same crew too. It’s important when

18

you’re on the road a lot that you have people around you that you can trust. It’s like a family away from home really.

Is there anyone you’re looking forward to seeing at Trentham Live? Yeah, I had a look at the line-up and saw a couple of artists that are playing. I saw the Kaiser Chiefs, who I’ve done a couple of gigs with in the past and they’ve obviously been around a while and know how to put a show on, so I think the crowd’s in for a real treat.

Do you have any new music coming up on the horizon? Yeah absolutely. I’ve just been doing a bit of writing and I’ll get back in the studio and hopefully, it’s ready to be released very soon. The last record was quite poppy and had a lot of production elements and this time I’d like to blend the last record with something like my first record and I think it would create something interesting. I want the next record to be very good for the fans, so I don’t want to rush anything, I want to take my time, but who knows? The songs could start flowing and start writing themselves and you could end up with a bunch of songs in no time at all. For me the exciting part isn’t just about making an album that I think people will like, there has to be some sort of experimentation involved from my side. So, it’s a little trial and error, sometimes you get it right and sometimes you don’t.

Having started in the industry at a young age, do you have any advice for young musicians trying to break out into the industry? I’d say the most important thing is songs. I know there’s a lot of spotlight on social media and TikTok and those sorts of platforms for people to get their music. TikTok will only last for so long, but good songs will last forever. If you have songs that people want to connect to then I think you’ll find success.

How do you feel about the recent introduction of AI music into the industry? I was watching the recent South Park episode on AI music and it was blowing my mind! I’m all up for technological advancements but I think when something comes from the soul it hits that extra bit harder. I’m sure there’s some AI music that’s fun but I’d be interested to hear a song that’s written with real passion, something that connects. It’s also how you interrupt songs, it’s about what the listener wants it to be. Trentham Live returns with five amazing shows from 16 - 20 August. trentham.co.uk

Malp alprract actiice Writer Grace Ofori-Attah on the NHS, junior doctor strikes and her brand new ITV show

What was your path to becoming a screenwriter? Having been a doctor for 15 years I’ve always been interested in storytelling and medicine is a career that’s full of stories. The first time you meet a patient, whether it’s in A&E or on a psychiatric ward, you are getting their history, their story. And you are trying to figure out what are the key details. What are the most important reasons why they are here today and how is that relevant to the treatment and the outcome? As I progressed through my career and was doing psychiatry, that story and its relevance became all the more important. Psychiatry is the black sheep of the medical family. But I feel that mental health is present in every part of medicine. And mental health discussions are becoming more relevant today. So I wanted to write a medical story. But while Malpractice is set in A&E to reflect what was probably the most difficult junior doctor rotation I’ve ever done, the underlying story is really one about psychiatry, mental health, addiction and how that is pervasive. Not just in medicine but in wider society. I resigned from my consultant’s post after just a couple of months in August 2017. It’s meant to be the pinnacle of your medical career. You pass all of your exams, you become a consultant and you have achieved the dream. My parents were thrilled. But I just felt this real disconnect. I really wanted to give screenwriting a go and thought if I finished my training and became a consultant I can then come back to medicine at any point.

22

But in the way that medicine is all consuming, as you see in Malpractice, you get sucked into this thing of you’ve got to keep going, you’ve got to keep jumping through the hoops. And when I was offered a consultant post it was the gift of a job within a team I was already working with. So I felt unable to say no to that. But then very quickly I knew what I really wanted to do was the writing and I eventually resigned. Although I did go back not long after.

How did Malpractice originate? Malpractice first came into my head towards the end of 2019. The first ever script I wrote way back in 2014/2015 was for what I thought was a great drama. Set on a psychiatric ward, it was called Ward 6. Loosely inspired by Chekhov’s Ward No 6 about a doctor who neglects the psychiatric ward but then eventually becomes inseparable from the patients. I’d set my story in a modern day hospital. That’s the script that got me an agent. I had discussions with World Productions and having gone away and thought some more, I then pitched them the idea which became Malpractice. And they loved it.

What themes did you want to explore? One of the main themes is pressure. That work-life balance pressure and the idea of doctors as people. What had really bugged me a lot during my training was this perception of doctors as being any different from their patients when they are obviously one and the same. We’d had the junior doctors’ contracts’ issues and strikes and that was all very difficult. Particularly for my cohort of doctors. Many of my friends left medicine during that time. There was a lot of negative press about doctors and what society’s expectations were of them. So I wanted to do a piece about the different pressures doctors are under and what it really looks like.

her career - on track to become a consultant - and has worked very hard to get there. Lucinda has chosen to work in A&E because it’s the coal face of medicine. It’s almost like being in a war zone. So, she has chosen what I would say is the hardest bit of medicine to do. That might be something about her personality where she likes to put herself in difficult situations and manages to cope, seemingly, quite well with them. But underneath all of that is a young woman who is trying to keep her family together. She is the sole breadwinner; has just had a child and felt she’s had to go back to medicine very quickly after giving birth because of the pandemic. That was her decision, but I think there was a pressure on doctors at the beginning of the pandemic if they were not working, if they had taken a year out or whatever, to come back. And I don’t think anyone realised the full impact of that on doctors. So what we see in Malpractice is an unravelling. It’s not just because of decisions they have made. It’s because they are a doctor and there are expectations coming from all different angles about how they should behave. I wanted to show in Lucinda that it’s not just what we immediately see but everything before that has led to the situation she is in.

You show how stretched resources are in A&E in terms of both staff and beds? In a few seconds of your working shift it can go

Can you tell us about Dr Lucinda Edwards, played by Niamh Algar? Lucinda Edwards is a doctor who is exceptionally talented. She is just about to reach the pinnacle of 23

from being quite peaceful to suddenly absolute chaos just as you think you are about to clock off. You can become quite numb to hearing about there being no space for patients in A&E and the lack of hospital beds and what it really means. So, I wanted to show the decisions that have to be made when there is literally just one bed left and all of the patients that need that bed are sick. And what looks like in medicine the safer patient to move to make room may not be. Because there’s a reason, they’ve been brought there in the first place. Lucinda is still classed as a junior doctor. That’s the other thing people don’t understand. You are a junior doctor until you are a consultant. She has to make that decision about who to prioritise and everyone is putting pressure on her. Then when it goes wrong, nobody wants to be responsible for that. And you can see she is in an impossible situation.

Are there any traces of you in these characters? I am 100 per cent not any of the characters. But I have a particular soft spot for Dr Ramya Morgan (Priyanka Patel) because that’s the level I was at when I did A&E. I was an ‘F2’. You’ve done your exams and done well at university. But there’s no real preparation for being on the wards. You can have been on the wards as a medical student but then you’re quite protected. So you go from doing one year of being a junior doctor - my first job as an F2 second year doctor was in A&E at King’s College Hospital in London - and I was so unprepared for what was to come. Essentially you

just have to keep going. You don’t know what’s coming through the doors. They give you a manual so you’ve got all of the protocols so you can look it up and figure out what to treat and how to treat. But I found it pretty harrowing. And you are reliant on your seniors. They make that clear. You can ask your seniors. But there’s also a thing that “you should know this so why are you asking?” So, Ramya, for me, is an interesting character. At first people might think she is dreadful. She’s looking out for herself, doesn’t pay attention, she’s bored, lazy…but, no. She’s just really stressed and tired and trying to survive the rotation and feels like she’s being picked on and singled out for blame. When actually she is there to learn and the other doctors are there to teach and train her and are responsible for the education she will get in A&E. And that’s the only training she will get in A&E.

There are consequences for doctors who come under investigation? For a few years I had been quite alarmed at the number of doctors committing suicide while under investigation by the General Medical Council. The process just wasn’t considerate to the doctors involved. As a doctor you are constantly worrying about doing something wrong because it’s almost like there’s a presumption of guilt rather than innocent until proven guilty. I never really see anything on TV about that investigation process - or about coroner’s inquests, which are a huge part of my medical life. So there are scenes of a coroner’s inquest in Malpractice. To show that while doctors may not be on trial there, it

The day before she would be doing some of the complex scenes we would spend time going over the pronunciation of some of the more difficult words and words she could not say. Then 24 hours later she was saying those words as if she’d been using them her whole life. Niamh was absolutely brilliant. Very convincing as a doctor.

feels very much like you are. We filmed those inquest scenes at the very beginning of the shoot and I was there for around half of the filming. It gave me shudders. Even watching it on screen I feel really stressed.

There is nothing like sitting in a consultation with a patient who you have been trying to persuade for months to take a drug. And then their favourite soap star or whatever takes it. Then they suddenly want it. The power of television is extraordinary. It can actually change people’s lives.

What is your writing process?

What I find really enjoyable about writing is that the images come first. So I can see the action in my head and it’s a ‘say what you see’ thing when I’m writing. I will think about it very visually and that makes the writing and the dialogue a lot easier because it’s always acted out in my head. I just wish I could go Malpractice also highlights addiction? back in time and tell my younger self that this would There is a stereotypical idea of what a drug addict happen. The people who are probably causing the most younger where I say, ‘I want to be a writer.’ All of the damage - not just at street drug level and personal use way through from childhood to university. I had discussed some of the medical procedures in advance with Niamh Algar (Dr Lucinda Edwards). Talking her through why I had chosen specific lines. The thing with the script writing is trying to make it clear and dramatic but also still be true to what’s happening. So, I was on set for most of the really technical things. Just to make sure the most dramatic bits of the procedures were being captured appropriately. I was amazed at Niamh’s ability to convincingly portray medical language she had never heard 25

his season Marc Audibet has designed workwear with a touch of glamour in the fabric choices or the cut. A collection that can be worn throughout the summer in both relaxed and more formal environments. Made of lightweight linens, more robust sateen cottons, luxurious satin, and fine stretch cashmere denim; the boxed jackets, over shirts and the new blouson can be paired with either trousers or a tailored wrap skirt, or the new Garbo trouser is Connolly’s take on summer tailoring. The sailor theme of this ‘shore leave’ collection features a beautifully cut sailor shirt and sash turn up trousers. The sailor tunic in black denim and safari chino can be worn with the pyjama tie denim trousers or the new summer classic chinos. For long days on deck or at the beach, Connolly have designed lightweight cotton beach shirts that can be worn over trousers or simply by themselves. Our caftan dress is made of the lightest Albini cotton making it a breeze to wear throughout the summer. Designed with old Hollywood as Connolly’s inspiration, this season Connolly have a capsule of silk satins including the new Greta trousers in navy, soft pink and khaki, a lightweight silk satin khaki bomber jacket and a classic Marc Audibet double breasted satin jacket. The tailored silk trousers are based on the first ever pair of trousers worn by a female actress on film, Greta Garbo, in the 1929 film, The Single Standard. The sculptural silk satin dress, designed by Audibet is a play on the iconic satin shirts, tailored and cut on the bias, it comes in two colours, a soft pink and a midnight navy. The Connolly summer knit capsule is inspired by nostalgic stitches and nautical holiday essentials in the

most Noble of Natural Fibres. The sands at Elie Beach in Scotland inspired Lorraine Acornley with the texture of The Beachcomber Sweater which is knitted in 100% Cashmere and available in two colours: a natural Melange shade and a summer sky blue. The silhouette is easy and relaxed with gently rolling neck, hem and cuffs that can be pulled up like a long sleeve T or sweatshirt. We suggest it is worn against the skin. The Picasso Boat Neck Sweater is knitted in pure Cotton in England, it’s a cool mid weight knit with a boat neck and straight hem and cuffs. The new Summer Guernsey is knitted in a soft worsted spun Merino Wool with a beautiful handle and sheen. Traditional Guernsey Cable and Rope Patterns adorn the chest and grown on collar. Perfect for layering, a hardy sweater for a weekend on shore available in Black and Nautical Navy. The Summer Wrap is an exercise in geometric simplicity. The perfect throw on piece for chilly mornings or evenings. Knitted in soft Merino Wool this is a travel essential. And of course the Connolly iconic fine gauge cashmere silk t-shirts, knitted in the last remaining English super fine cotton machines in Italy are luxe defined, exquisitely detailed and ultra soft, the most versatile of lightweight knits for both men and women. This summer in black, navy and khaki. The Clifford Street shop downstairs is filled with bright cotton and linen shirts with a focal point on short sleeve shirts, seventies style polos and waffle fabric, as well as a leather vest and matching suede shorts for the more adventurous. W

hether you want to monitor your thyroid function, identify a hormone imbalance, or measure ovarian reserve, a female health test can help you to better understand your current health and future health risks. Fertility, metabolism, mood, and even sleep encompass female hormones and can often be overlooked due to stress or as part of a busy lifestyle. Women often dismiss these signs when it comes to their health, leaving their bodies, and reproductive system a mystery. Randox Health offer a tailored range of female focused health checks, designed for women at every life stage. Unique access to unrivalled data in this way empowers you to make positive lifestyle changes to help prevent illness and improve wellbeing. David Ferguson, Chief Operating Officer said ‘Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in the number of women taking health into their own hands. At Randox Health, we provide a range of specialised health packages that enable you to gain a complete picture of female health concerns including

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Menopause, and Advanced Fertility. The extensive range provides the tests you need to take a proactive approach to help monitor and improve your health.’

Gain deeper insights into hormonal health Female hormones naturally fluctuate throughout the month, and with age. Signs or symptoms of a hormone imbalance include a change in your period, weight gain, acne, hair loss, low energy levels, anxiety, or muscle weakness. Tracking hormone changes can help you to understand your body, and what may be affecting your hormone levels. By providing access to hormonal data including Progesterone, Prolactin, and Oestradiol, Randox Health encourage women to see the natural fluctuation of their hormones that can be due to factors such as age, specific times of the month, or a hormonal imbalance.

Addressing female health status All women will experience menopause in their lifetime. Many changes can occur within the body during menopause and perimenopause which have an impact on daily life and general wellbeing.

Symptoms experienced can include hot flushes, brain fog, anxiety, headaches, and difficulty sleeping. A menopause health check at Randox Health will help you better understand the impact of menopause on your hormonal, thyroid, nutritional, heart, bone health, and iron status.

Measure ovarian reserve Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH) is a measure of ovarian reserve and provides an indication of the number of eggs a female has remaining. AMH levels typically decline with age, becoming undetectable post-menopause. Both high and low levels of AMH can impact female fertility. Find out if your ovarian reserve is normal for your age with a simple blood test, which is particularly useful if considering fertility treatment. Female fertility tests are available both in-clinic and at-home with Randox Health to enable you to gain a deeper insight into your health at a time and place that works best for you. MEET THE CHEF:

DA N I E L

HEFFY Executive Chef at NORD

What’s your first food related memory? My favourite childhood food memory is eating grilled corn from a street vendor in Cyprus with my dad. When did you know you wanted to be a chef? I was 16 and wanting to join the Royal Navy. I actually missed my last school exams to go away on a Royal Navy ship called HMS Iron Duke and RFA Mounts Bay where I worked in the kitchen. I loved it but knew being a chef on land in a more creative and food focused environment was where I wanted to be. Describe your style in three words. Flavoursome, comfortable and fresh. What’s your favourite dish to create? It’s impossible to pick just one dish but I love to create dishes around seasonal ingredients because you get the best results when the produce is perfect before you start to do anything with it. Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? Everything; social media, art, restaurant experiences, personal experience. Discussions with fellow chefs is definitely my favourite though, I think you get the best ideas as a team.

What four ingredients are necessary in your kitchen? Salt, sherry vinegars, butter and soy. If you could prepare a meal for anyone, who would it be and what would you make? Massimo Bottura, chef patron of Osteria Francescana which boasts three Michelin stars and is ranked No.1 in the world’s 50 best restaurants. What are you most proud of in your career? Taking a chance and moving to Sweden to grow as a person and as a chef. Who is your biggest supporter? My partner Alicia and our two girls. What would you want to have as your last meal? Fried chicken or ramen - something simple but really flavoursome. What advice would you offer to an aspiring chef? Take that step and leave your comfort zone, go to a restaurant and work under a chef that inspires you. I had to learn to not take feedback personally, when I did that. That’s when I started to really grow. nordrestaurant.co.uk 49

SPOTLIGHT ON... CHAI WU - HARRODS Best for... Luxury Asian dining

T

ucked away from the bustle of Brompton Road on Harrods’ fifth floor lies a discreet and peaceful oasis - the cool and contemporary Chinese restaurant, Chai Wu, where creativity and experience reign supreme. Serving haute Asian cuisine using the highest quality produce, Chai Wu’s menu is a kaleidoscope of Asia; a meeting of time-honoured and unconventional dishes, produced in an open kitchen and served alongside the world class service that is so synonymous with its home, Harrods. Chai Wu specialises in creating a memorable dining experience for every guest with its stunning a la carte offering delicate, pearlescent slices of fresh sashimi are picked from the ice counter by the skilled team of sushi chefs whilst customers watch, and dim sum are handmade on the premises, arriving plump and fragrant, crowned with caviar and flakes of gold. Sweet and sour chicken is served in fluffy, crunchy tempura with a sticky and sour sauce inside a carved dragon fruit – the flesh of which makes an unusual but delicious pairing to the much-loved signature dish. The classic Beijing Duck is elevated to hero status at Chai Wu and has remained a stalwart on the

50

menu ever since it opened. Served with pancakes and pillowy bao, the duck is sliced table side, skin shining and crisp and the roasted meat tender beneath. Alongside the classic accoutrements of hoisin and greens, the duck also comes with minced garlic in truffle oil, and a fine, vanilla-scented sugar for dipping the crisp skin into. Guests are also encouraged to consider the option to indulge in a bespoke omakase-style menu, which can be entirely customised based on preferences and palates. Renowned for serving some of the finest ingredients in the world, Chai Wu has a particular focus on sourcing incredible beef and seafood, including Giant Alaskan crab and Kobe beef. Giant Alaskan Crab is served Singaporean style, in the Alaskan King Crab Roll and fresh from the charcoal grill on the luxurious Mixed Seafood Platter alongside lobster, tiger prawns and king scallops. Similarly, Kobe is treated with

appropriate reverence: a dedicated menu that celebrates the classified Japanese beef is available to those who wish to try. The design of the beautiful restaurant reflects the five elements that are woven through Chinese philosophy and culture: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Dark, polished wood is complemented with neutral tones and textures, with soft lighting and low hanging lamps providing a calming, atmospheric ambience. The drinks list is extensive, with transporting cocktails bursting with exotic fruits and fragrant botanicals, and monthly changing specials sitting alongside an encompassing wine list. Whiskeys are celebrated, and the bar is well stocked with rare spirits, including limited Johnny Walker bottles and Louis XIII, served in glasses made of a crystal so fine that, when chinked, a beautiful chime echoes throughout the restaurant, leading many more diners to follow suit in their orders. chaiwu.co.uk

Off to to tth he Races Laurent-Perrier returns as the official Champagne partner of Chester Racecourse

As Laurent-Perrier is again the official Champagne partner of Chester Racecourse, could you talk us through your long-standing partnership? Laurent-Perrier is proud to be the official Champagne partner of Chester Racecourse. Laurent-Perrier and Chester Racecourse hold a long standing partnership together sharing similar values. Both pioneers, leaders in their field and award winning, with a focus on creating special and memorable experiences. Laurent-Perrier is a family-owned House that has always had a pioneering and innovating role in Champagne. Through its engagement in Sustainable Viticulture of the Champagne vineyards and with each of its Cuvées, the House was created around 4 strong convictions: The assemblage, not the vintage, a unique and distinctive style: freshness, elegance and purity, Chardonnay and the expression of Pinot Noir. Chester Racecourse, established in 1539, is the oldest racecourse still in operation in the world. Recognised as a leader in its field, it consistently pushes boundaries to ensure the racecourse product delivers the optimum experience and opportunities for visiting horsemen and the general public. Which of the exclusive Laurent-Perrier range proves most popular at race events? Cuvée Rosé is a popular choice at the races. Since 1968, Laurent-Perrier has developed the mastery of a very particular and rare know-how in Champagne: maceration. This process

makes it possible to obtain the richest and most subtle expression of Pinot Noir. This rosé champagne is characterized by its ripe red fruit aromas, a high intensity and great freshness. However, the whole Laurent-Perrier range is available including its Prestige Cuvée Grand Siècle. Vintage in Champagne is usually synonymous with excellence for Prestige Cuvées. Contrarily, Laurent-Perrier has always been convinced that only the art of assemblage can offer what nature can never provide: the perfect year. The expression of the perfect year is that of a great Champagne wine that over time has developed a depth, intensity and aromatic complexity, yet maintains its freshness and acidity. To create such a wine, Laurent-Perrier will rely on the characteristics of the great vintage years of Champagne: freshness, structure and finesse.

What can guests expect from The Parade this season? Guests will be able to enjoy the LaurentPerrier range (including Cuvée Rosé and Grand Siècle) from the most premium spot on course, the beautiful summer roof garden bar and viewing terrace at The PARADE. Guests will be welcomed by a champagne Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé

reception before they enjoy an immersive gastronomic journey. What changes can guests expect to the Laurent-Perrier Champagne Bar ahead of the upcoming season? The Laurent-Perrier Champagne Bar at the racecourse has undergone a refresh ahead of the new season with a focus on Cuvée Rosé. Expect to see lots of beautiful flowers and an updated terrace space with a great view of the course. How important is sustainability to both companies? Both Chester Racecourse and Laurent-Perrier recognise the importance of building a sustainable business. Since the 1980s, Champagne has been dedicated to implementing solutions to protect the environment. As growers and producers of fine Champagne wines, Laurent-Perrier is committed to ending all practices or actions which may cause irreversible damage to the environment. This pledge lives and breathes daily at the House, showing a continual respect for the environment and finite natural resources. The House’s long-term policy in grape growing and wine elaboration is based entirely on sustainable methods, through the careful management of resources such as water and energy, the balanced use of terroirs and soils and the reduction of waste at the source through recycling and recovery efforts. laurent-perrier.com chester-races.com 53

Best of Br British

We talk to some of Great Britain's business leaders and discover the secrets to their success

KENTON JONES Managing Director of Kenton Jones Designers & Makers In a nutshell, what does your business do? Design, manufacture and install handcrafted kitchens and furniture.

Could you give us a short overview of your career to this point? Being the second generation in a family business, I have grown up around timber and joinery. From an early age, as my father before me, we had woodwork tools and would be designing and building things. During my early teens, I spent time as an apprentice in a small engineering shop, although the material palette here was completely different to the family’s joinery shop, it gave me a perfect grounding to accuracy and tolerances generally associated with engineering metals. In my later teens, I worked within our joinery shop alongside all of the employees in the different departments. Moving into my 20’s I served my time on the installation side of the company’s products as a site joiner. This also led into developing an engineered timber construction company that now sits alongside the joinery side of the business. In my early 30’s I took on the management role from my father for the whole business and continue to do so to this day.

Who inspires you in business? Firstly, my father as he built our business from the ground and was

successful in doing this by just following his personal qualities that included; attention to detail, passion for quality, being inspirational and respectful of others and above all not afraid to think outside the box and do something others say can’t be done.

What has been the biggest challenge to your business? The luxury joinery world is one that sees a lot of companies rise and fall through the different economic climates, these climates effect the industry heavily being a non-commodity product. By far our biggest challenge is navigating our way through today's rising material, labour, and overhead costs. As a company, I am very fortunate to have a team that is continuously looking at efficiency improvements and ways to improve our processes.

What is the unique quality that sets your business apart from others? Throughout the years we have had the reputation of being able to deliver projects that most would shy away from. We have a deeply ingrained passion for the material we work with. That is the beautiful thing about timber; being natural and no two pieces the same it’s a material that has history and a story behind it, well before it begins its second life being turned into a piece of furniture. We have a team of people from initial design right through to completion who all appreciate timber and the qualities associated with it compared to other inanimate materials. As a company not only do we love what we do but we have a history and story to talk about and continuously add to in the future. kentonjones.com

ANDY CARR COO at Guncast Group In a nutshell, what does your business do? Guncast Swimming Pools Ltd has been the UK’s leading luxury pool supplier for almost fifty years. Now owned by Klafs GmbH, the world leading German sauna, steam and spa supplier, we bring the highest quality hot and cold thermal spa experiences to the UK market, alongside our luxury swimming pools. We can now provide the complete package for customers – our teams design, supply and install bespoke swimming pools and thermal wellness experience projects for both commercial and residential markets, managing the entire process from beginning to end to maintain world leading quality standards.

When was the business established? Guncast began in the 1970s, as a family run business in Surrey, while Klafs has been in operation since 1928. The partnership first began in 2016 and has gone from strength to strength, with the Klafs acquisition of Guncast in 2021 forming the perfect marriage to deliver the complete pool, sauna steam and spa package to our clients at the very highest end of the market - coinciding with the opening of our Cheshire office and Klafs UK showroom.

Could you give us a short overview of your career to this point? I joined Guncast in 2010 with 15 years experience in the construction industry and a strong design and project management background. Since joining and through strategic planning, operations and company structure I have evolved Guncast – and now Klafs UK - to reach and maintain our standing as the leading luxury pool, sauna, steam and spa provider in the UK. I have also been responsible for Design by Guncast INC, bringing cutting edge pool design and moving swimming pool floor technology to the UK & US market.

Who inspires you in business? I am Inspired by our clients, their demands and aspiration for the very

best quality and attention to detail, and the vision and passion of the world leading architects, interior designers and project delivery professionals that we work with. Inspiration is also driven by what is possible, bringing together the best technology, engineering and innovation to deliver an unrivalled market leading product.

What drove you to be successful? My work ethic and the challenge, and to achieve, lead and develop myself, in turn to develop the UK’s premier swimming pool and spa company into a world leading product and brand. Setting standards and a desire to do better is also important, reaching and achieving those standards and goals for yourself and to help others is rewarding.

What has been the biggest challenge to your business? Constantly developing our product and service to maintain and exceed client expectations and remain the market leaders at the forefront of the industry is a big challenge. Achieving steady growth and increasing market share whilst maintaining profits is also a challenge, a business has to adapt to market dynamics and work hard to be successful.

What makes a great business leader? A great business leader has a clear vision and a good plan, and the enthusiasm and passion to deliver with the required skills and logical strategic thinking. They take responsibility, lead by example and create an environment for others to be motivated to achieve for themselves.

What is the unique quality that sets your business apart from others? Beginning as two very successful independent businesses means we are able to offer the very best expertise when it comes to both swimming pools and wellness suites. The marriage of these companies then allows us to ensure a smooth, streamlined service to our customers, helping them create the ultimate wellness experience in their homes, hotels or developments. guncast.com, klafs-uk.com

LAURA WOLFE Founder of Road3 In a nutshell, what does your business do? Road3 is an events, media relations and player care agency, working primarily in the football industry. We work with clubs, players and organisations, running high profile sporting events, media campaigns, launches and initiatives and looking after the lives of our high-profile clients.

Could you give us a short overview of your career to this point? After originally training as an actress, I began my events career with Merrill Lynch and ABN AMRO, working in London for ten years. I then moved back to Manchester and was appointed regional director of the Institute of Directors (IoD) in the North West, turning the region into the highest performing IoD region in the country in under five years, after which I moved into private business, working for an events agency as sales director, and then set up on my own. In 2010, I bought the rights to the Northwest Football Awards, which has become the biggest football awards event of its kind outside of the capital.

Who inspires you in business? Over the course of my career, I have been lucky enough to get to know some inspirational business leaders, who have become family. They have inspired me, supported me and believed in me during some very difficult times. They have all done well by doing good and they lead

by example - my late father, Brian Wolfe, my brother, David Wolfe, Steve Oliver, CEO of musicMagpie, Jennie Johnson MBE, CEO of My First Five Years, Steve Bennett, Founder of Business of Science Ltd and Jo Tongue MBE, Founder and CEO of Tongue Tied Management. These people are the ultimate business leaders and I’m lucky to have had them in my life.

What drove you to be successful? My family is incredibly hard working. I grew up in a house with parents and an older brother and sister, who have all been extremely successful in their chosen fields. I’ve had unconditional love and support from them, and their drive has definitely given me the confidence to believe in myself.

What has been the biggest challenge to your business? This industry is tough. I’ve had a bumpy ride – it’s not all been plain sailing. I’ve made some very bad decisions and experienced dramatic failures, that nearly finished me, but I learned from those experiences, and I can honestly say that I’ve never been happier doing what I’m doing now.

What makes a great business leader? Resilience, determination, compassion, the ability to admit when you are wrong, the ability to laugh at yourself, to ask for help and to work with people who are better than you are.

What is the unique quality that sets your business apart from others? It sounds cliched but we actually do go the extra mile. We work extremely hard, and our clients consistently tell us that it’s the care and authenticity in the way we do things that sets us apart. road3.co.uk northwestfootballawards.com

EMMA RODEN & EDWINA KIMBLE Practice Directors at Kimble Roden Architects & Designers In a nutshell, what does your business do? Kimble Roden design and deliver exceptional residential design projects for our clients. As an RIBA chartered architects practice, we bring high levels of professionalism to all of our schemes – whether it’s a new build home, extension or interior project. From initial designs, through to planning permission and completion on site, we will guide you through every step of the journey giving you complete peace of mind.

Could you give us a short overview of your career to this point? We both worked in large commercial architecture practices in Manchester before setting up our own studio. Having worked on large projects including schools, churches, offices and mixed-use developments we wanted to turn our experience and skill to the residential market offering a unique service to both private and developer clients.

Who inspires you in business? As architects and interior designers, we are inspired by successful individuals who have made a significant impact in our industry. We admire iconic designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Edwin Lutyens and Carlo Scarpa who follow a design ethos to create a holistic solution. We’re also inspired by young practices that are pushing boundaries and bringing fresh ideas to the industry, especially in terms of sustainability. Ultimately, we look up to those who share our values of creativity and quality.

What drove you to be successful? The desire to create fantastic homes for clients incorporating functional and beautiful design whilst responding to their bespoke needs. We really believe a

good architect has the ability to change the way people enjoy their home, whilst maximising budget and adding value.

What has been the biggest challenge to your business? What makes a great business leader? A great business leader should have a clear vision for their company’s future and the ability to communicate this effectively to their team. They should be able to build positive relationships with clients, employees, and other consultants, and possess strong interpersonal skills. Above all, a great business leader should conduct themselves with integrity and honesty and maintaining a high level of professionalism in all their interactions – something Kimble Roden strive to do.

MARK BOLER Co-Owner of [ONE] London Rd In a nutshell, what does your business do? [ONE] London Rd is a high-level business memberships and co-working environment, exceptionally styled with 75 workstations, meeting and event spaces and a social café. It’s ideal for homeworkers looking for a change of scenery, those in need of a temporary base when visiting from anywhere in the country, or professionals wanting to arrange important client meetings or events, in an adaptable space, within a close-knit community, with the added benefits of proximity to Manchester city centre. There’s a choice of meeting rooms and event space that can be hired for day or evening occasions, including the impressive suite, The Edge with its own private rooftop terrace, The White Wizard perfect for a small team to be together and Wizard 1 & 2, perfect for an intimate meeting, all of which are available for hire by members and non-members. Exclusive features over the four floors include interiors flooded with natural light, floor to ceiling windows, a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Alderley Edge, a gymnasium, large projection screens, charging stations throughout the collaborative workspace, showers, secure lockers for personal storage, EV charging points and full digital integration throughout.

Could you give us a short overview of your career to this point? Prior to [ONE] London Rd, I was the Founder & CEO of the luxury The Mere Golf Resort & Spa, Knutsford, an 81-bedroom hotel, with two restaurants, conference and banqueting facilities and one of the most popular destinations in the North-West. Prior to this, I was the owner of Hawkstone Park Hotel & Golf

Resort, Shropshire, a 65-bedroom hotel, a historic park and two 18-hole golf courses.

Who inspires you in business? My Father – his mantra was to ‘not ask others to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself’. He was an inspirational leader of people, working alongside them to learn and develop the business. I was inspired to follow in his footsteps and to also work alongside teams, to encourage them to deliver high standards.

What drove you to be successful? My belief is that throughout our life, we are all presented with opportunities to be successful. We, as individuals, must recognise what that opportunity is, and how we can move forward with it. With [ONE] London Rd, the country was recovering from the pandemic and hybrid working was becoming the new normal. Ged Mason OBE (Co-owner) and I recognised the opportunity to create a co-working environment that provides all the benefits that the hybrid and nomadic businessperson demand these days, and future proofing it with touches that they don’t yet know they need!

What makes a great business leader? For me as a business leader, it’s important to always have a thirst for knowledge and the desire to never stop learning, which in turn, helps create a meaningful business for both the owner and the team.

What is the unique quality that sets your business apart from others? We desire to be the destination for intimate business memberships, meetings and events, and social spaces primarily within the Cheshire region, with a brand philosophy of professionally responsive, personalised service, at every touchpoint, vibrant spaces, quality fit out and community spirit culture both within our spaces and by being at the heart of each local community. We believe with this powerful combination, businesses, meetings, events, and people will thrive. onelrd.com

DR ALEXANDER PARYS Medical Director at SONÜ Medical Aesthetics In a nutshell, what does your business do? We are a doctor-led medical aesthetics clinic that provides our patients with natural, safe, and normallooking rejuvenation to both the face and body. We want our patients to look refreshed, like the “best version of themselves” rather than looking “done”, overfilled or fake. We achieve this through a variety of specialised techniques, from injections such as filler, to no-needle facelifts such as HIFU and laser. For the body, we have advanced treatments for cellulite (such as LanLuma and ONDA Coolwaves), fat dissolving, skin laxity with Profhilo Body, and EMSCULPT for 6-pack toning. Additionally, we also have the so-called “Kegel Throne”, EMSELLA, which helps treat urinary incontinence in both men and women just by sitting fully clothed on a special chair for half an hour. We aim to promote the medical side of aesthetics to ensure treatments are carried out appropriately and safely, but combine it with natural artistry for the best possible results.

What drove you to be successful? I believe it was the poor experience my mother experienced as a patient that convinced me there was a better, more ethical way to perform aesthetic

treatments. This drive to keep the patient as the centre of care led me to ensure my knowledge of treatments and complication reduction was of utmost importance and I believe my honesty and integrity has resonated with patients, resulting in referrals being one of our highest sources of new patients.

What has been the biggest challenge to your business? I think the biggest challenge to my business has been educating patients on the importance of seeking out experienced, medically trained professionals to have their treatment with – did you know the UK is the only place in the whole world where anyone can just walk in off the street and start injecting filler into your face? In a world where aesthetics is frequently seen as a commodity such as having nails or hair done and remains completely unregulated, it can be a challenge to explain why you pay for the skill, experience and safety, not just the syringe.

What is the unique quality that sets your business apart from others? We’ve always tried to be something different, something new…hence our branding – SONÜ. We don’t want to be a clinic that’s tired, boring and samey, or one that results to non-ethically pressurising the patient into a sale they’re not comfortable with or later regrets or treats the patient as just a number on a conveyor belt. We try to be personal, professional and passionate, whilst bringing in the fun where appropriate. We don’t rush patients in and out, and our team are always happy just to have a chat with any patients passing by that just pop in for a quick hello and coffee. As a doctor-led medical clinic, our aim is to ultimately form a no-pressure working relationship with the patient, so they don’t just attend for one off treatment, but rather we develop a bespoke treatment plan in order to achieve (and continue to achieve) best possible result-driven outcomes based on the main concerns of the patient. sonuclinic.com

DRIVE WHEN IN ROME…

Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news WORDS: JAMES FOSSDYKE

Ferrari’s Roma grand tourer has been a hit with customers, but now the Prancing Horse has added another dimension by removing the roof

T

he Ferrari Roma was already beautiful, but Ferrari has somehow made it even easier on the eye with this new Spider model. Capable of looking like it’s wafting down the Riviera even on a wet Tuesday in Chester, the Roma Spider is the first front-engined Ferrari to have a folding fabric roof in 54 years. That hood, which can deploy in 13.5 seconds at speeds of up to 60km/h (37mph), can be specified in a range of bespoke fabrics and stitching designs, and it is compact enough to leave space for luggage in the boot and four seats in the cabin. It also covers an interior

76

rammed with technology, including a steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls and a clever gear selector arrangement that mimics the classic bare-metal H-gate of old manual Ferraris. Naturally, though, the piece de resistance is that thunderous turbocharged V8 engine that’s carried over from the Roma coupe. The 3.9-litre engine produces 612bhp, which is enough to get from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds, and it’ll get to 124mph before most family hatchbacks hit 62. Flat out, it’ll be doing about 200mph. Ferrari says it will be almost as quick in the corners, too, with the Spider weighing just 84kg more than the coupe. Ferrari Roma Spider, £TBC, ferrari.com

The special versions of the Wraith, which we now know is the last V12 coupe Rolls-Royce will ever build, will come with a spectacular design Black Arrow that pays tribute to the eight-wheeled Thunderbolt landspeed record car, which was equipped with a Rolls-Royce engine. The Jaguar F-Type’s days may be numbered, writes James Fossdyke, but the big cat is still a force to be reckoned with.

J

ust as every dog has its day, it seems the Jaguar F-Type has used all of its nine lives. News broke earlier this year that production of the gorgeous sports car, which is built just an hour’s drive from the Cheshire border, would end at some yet-to-be-decided point in 2024. The car is being killed off by Jaguar’s impending switch to all-electric power, which leaves no place in the line-up for a thumping V8 sports coupe. But 10 years since it first went on sale, this bad boy of the car industry, which has had its fair share of run-ins with the authorities, is still capable of competing with some of the best sports cars on the planet. If nothing else, there’s the way it looks. Whether you choose the coupe or the convertible, the F-Type is bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful, but we think the coupe is especially spectacular. The way the roof and window lines converge with the pert rear end is incredible, and the proportions are pretty much perfect. You see it, you want it, and to hell with any of its issues. And because this is a British sports car, there are plenty of issues, so let’s get them out of the way. First of all, there’s a decided lack of practicality, which isn’t the end of the world in a sports car, but it isn’t ideal either. A Porsche 911 comes with a big luggage tub under the bonnet and a sensibly sized compartment behind the seats, of which there are four. The F-Type, however, has just two seats, and because there’s a dirty great engine at the front (more on that masterpiece later), the only luggage space is at the back. That isn’t such a problem for the coupe, which has a respectable 310-litre boot, but the convertible has around 200 litres of capacity, which is less than you get from a little VW Up! city car. And because there are no back seats, you can’t even use those as a sort of glorified parcel shelf. That isn’t the only problem in Jaguar land. The F-Type’s cabin is another sticking point, simply because it feels a little bit cheap. Jaguar made its name with beautiful wood and leather interiors but the F-Type has eschewed all that in favour of a race-style design. Yes, the way the air

vents pop out of the dashboard is neat, but the buttons on the steering wheel feel as though they were made from old wheelie bins and some of the plastics on the buttons are only marginally more tactile. In the Jaguar’s defence, though, much the same accusation could be levelled at the Aston Martin Vantage, which is a more expensive car that’s no easier on the eye. And the Aston doesn’t feel much more solidly screwed together, even though it borrows so many components from Mercedes-Benz. Where the F-Type really pulls ahead of the Aston is with its touchscreen, which is considerably more modern than that of the Vantage. Where the Aston uses an old Mercedes system, the Jag gets a fresh version of Jaguar’s latest technology, which looks good and generally responds pretty quickly to inputs. It isn’t perfect – you can’t see it when the sun shines directly on it, which is quite a problem in the convertible – but it’s far from the worst system we’ve seen. From thereon in, complaints are few and far between. Once you’re in the F-Type’s cabin there’s more than enough space even for tall people, and the seats are fantastic. They hold you in place really well when you’re going around corners, but they’re still comfortable on long journeys. Then there’s the big engine, which is started by pressing a little button that pulses like a heartbeat when you unlock the car. Customers have a choice between a piddling 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 296bhp, or you can have the supercharged V8 we tested, which is available with a choice of two power outputs (the 444bhp P450

79

Drive | The CHESHIRE Magazine

Jaguar F-Type R AWD Coupe Price: £117,295 (as tested) Gearbox: Eight-speed automatic Engine: 5.0-litre supercharged V8 0-60mph: 3.5 seconds Top speed: 186mph Power: 567bhp

or the 567bhp ‘R’ version). The bigger engine also offers customers a choice of rear- or all-wheel-drive layouts, and although the tyres provide so much traction that all-wheel-drive isn’t necessary in the dry, it does give you a bit more security in wet or snowy weather. Every engine comes with a fantastically snappy eightspeed automatic gearbox, and there are little paddles behind the wheel with which you can take manual control of the changes. Naturally, with so much power on tap, performance is ample, and every version of the F-Type will get from 0-60mph in no more than five seconds or so. But the V8s are much faster, with the all-wheel-drive R version we tested getting there in just 3.5 seconds. In a straight line, then, the F-Type is quite happy to keep pace with its rivals, and

80

it can hold its own in corners, too. Because of the weight distribution, it has this remarkable sense of balance and poise, while the steering is nice and direct, even if it doesn’t offer huge amounts of feel. Combine that with the grip from the enormous tyres and the Jag is brilliant in the bends, and if you’re into track days, it’ll reward you in spades. It isn’t bad on the motorway, either, and though the ride is a bit firm around town, it’s comfortable enough to make longer drives acceptable. But the highlight is that V8 engine, which makes a powerful snarl and feels really old-school in the best possible way. Press the little exhaust button (it looks like a pair of glasses) on the centre console and it sounds even more spectacular, popping and banging during gear changes and generally feeling a bit more boisterous. It’s quite aristocratic in its attitude, but it’s the sort of aristocrat that once got an ASBO on a beer-fuelled night out. So while Jaguar may be desperate to change course and capitalise on the growing market for electric luxury cars, it can still do old-school with the best of them. For all its faults, the F-Type is easily a match for rivals from Aston Martin and Porsche, so its demise seems somewhat premature. If you want our advice, you should get one while you still can.

DAVID MARTIN OVERLOOKING HIS GARDEN AND POND IN MOTTRAM ST ANDREW, CHESHIRE

A MEMBER OF THE GREEN TASKFORCE PLANTING THE TREES

Plant a Lasting Legacy on your Land Planting a woodland on your land and putting down roots in your local area will help to leave a positive legacy, benefit future generations and provide a home for wildlife. We talk to Cheshire resident, David Martin, about a tree planting project he completed earlier this year in memory of his family.

E

DAVID MARTIN WITH LAUREN TAYLOR FROM THE MERSEY FOREST

nvironmental documentaries such as Wild Isles have highlighted the importance of protecting nature and how a changing landscape can drastically impact the wildlife that rely on it. With more of us looking at ways we can take positive steps to address the climate and nature crisis, now is the time to consider planting a woodland on your land. Cheshire resident, David Martin, bought a converted barn, set in six acres of land, in 2001. He had been considering planting a woodland for some time and, after being told ‘the best time to plant trees was 20 years ago and the next best time is now,’ he was inspired to get started. “In February last year, my brother was diagnosed with cancer which was likely to be terminal. Events like this make one reflect on the past and also the future,” said David. “That was the trigger I needed:

I contacted The Mersey Forest, and a woodland advisor visited me the same day. Sadly, my brother died just after Christmas, but he had encouraged me to get on with planting before it was too late. “I’d already planted individual trees to commemorate my seven grandchildren and now I have a whole wood for my brother.” David’s woodland was planted in March this year, on a field on the edge of his garden. A woodland advisor from the Mersey Forest provided advice on the design of the woodland, the tree species that would be suitable for the site and supported him with the grant application. “I had an idea about which trees I wanted and drew a sketch of a wood with paths and a glade near the middle,” David said. “The Mersey Forest team took over dealing with the detailed design, obtaining the grant and ordering the trees and planting materials. I now have a field which already looks bigger with the tree guards cosseting the baby oaks, birch, Scots pines and others, hinting at the wood which I can see in my mind’s eye. “At the age of 73, I have something to look forward to when I am in my nineties and indeed the years between as the saplings take form and the wildlife take advantage of new habitats. I just wish I had done it 20 years ago.”

David received support through the Trees for Climate programme, a government-backed multi-million pound woodland creation programme which supports landowners to integrate trees on their land. The programme is part of the government-led Nature for Climate Fund and is being delivered by England’s Community Forests, 13 organisations providing advice and support to landowners, whether they have a small pocket of unused land or several acres of farmland. Grants covering up to 100% of tree planting, protection and related infrastructure costs, including tree guards and fencing, can be provided through the programme, along with 15 years of maintenance payments. The tree planting season runs from November to March each year. If you are interested in planting trees on your land, contact your local Community Forest today to start the process: For Cheshire and Merseyside contact The Mersey Forest: www.merseyforest.org.uk/planttrees or email: mail@merseyforest.org.uk For areas in and around Greater Manchester contact City of Trees: www.cityoftrees.org.uk/plant-trees or email: team@cityoftrees.org.uk 87

HOME IN INTE TER RNE NET T? Gary Newson, Regional Director for UK and Ireland at NETGEAR on why a WiFi Mesh System could be the solution

W

iFi has become a fundamental part of life; whether for leisure or work. WiFi and internet are so closely related that many people don’t make the distinction between them. But you depend on your internet service provider’s router to supply WiFi, and you may be disappointed with the signal strength. Especially if you have a larger home or a garden which extends some distance from your house. Are you relying on the lagging router from your current internet provider to get strong WiFi everywhere? Have you tried wireless repeaters, but were dissatisfied with results? Fortunately, WiFi Mesh systems are the solution to spread stronger signals throughout your home and garden. Unlike WiFi repeaters, which only extend your main router’s signal, Mesh systems create a new, boosted wireless network across your entire home. Mesh systems give you the ability to fully enjoy the internet

88

speeds you have subscribed for thanks to a WiFi up to ten times faster! They are usually based on 2 or more units, which create a single, reliable WiFi network, expandable with additional satellites. Connected devices are handed off seamlessly to the unit with the strongest signal, making Mesh WiFi ideal for large homes and businesses with WiFi “dead spots”. For today’s needs as well as tomorrow’s, we recommend premium WiFi, meaning products which are easy to install and use and which offer the speeds and capacity to support your family’s evolving needs. Premium WiFi upgrades your home, opening new possibilities, and elevating the things you already love. Imagine your hobby, favourite activity, anything you’re passionate about, taken to the next level with high-speed WiFi. NETGEAR’s Orbi WiFi 6E Mesh Systems bring unparalleled performance based on cutting edge, patented technology. On top of that, the units are elegant enough to fit unobtrusively into your décor and secure enough

to automatically shield your family from external threats such as hackers and identity thieves. NETGEAR Orbi 960 series Mesh System: No-compromise, best-in-class performance, capacity and range The Orbi RBKE963 Mesh system features best-in-class, lightning-fast WiFi Internet access to homes of up to 7,500 square feet, with packages available for further coverage of up to 15,500 sq. ft. The Orbi 960 is also available in stylish white or black designs, making it a welcome addition to any home, and with up to 200 devices even the most demanding smart homes are covered. If you’re tired of weak WiFi signals and slow internet speeds, consider a WiFi Mesh System like NETGEAR’s Orbi 960 series. You’ll enjoy lightningfast, wall-to-wall WiFi access, seamless network operation, and the ability to expand coverage as needed. netgear.com/uk

Swif wiftt Unl nliimite ted d…

Life-Chan ife-Changg ing Detacched Ex Deta Extension tensionss What if you could have a permanent, bespoke, detached extension completed in just 3 months after your first enquiry?

M

ost of us could use some extra space and the unique beauty of a Swift detached extension lies in its flexibility, quality and the sheer efficiency of this investment to your existing home. On average, these stunning buildings are erected and completed on-site within 4 weeks. This is due to the extensive preparation of the SIP building components in modern factories – never affected by weather or daylight time. What is similarly appealing is the lack of interruption to your everyday life during construction. Apart from just a couple of occasions to make connections for electricity or other services, the highly experienced installers will be wholly self-sufficient. Over the last 16 years, local Cheshire company, Swift Unlimited, have built hundreds of beautiful, high-end garden rooms, the majority being detached from the main house. The variety of uses is endless and their flexibility of use is continuous as the family dynamics change over time. The buildings are permanent and incredibly eco-efficient as well as exuding a feeling of solidity – very much like any other room in your home. So, how would you use yours? Here are some examples of how previous Swift clients have relished their new spaces…

90

“Working from home” or “working-out” at home? Gyms and home offices remain popular – and can even be combined into one space. Add a toilet and shower. You have a special venue to concentrate on your goals and spend as long as you like there, all within a few steps of your home. Other added luxuries include saunas, hot-tubs and an extended outside area for enjoying the best weather. Swift Unlimited bespoke buildings are designed just for you. Or, indulge yourself in your favourite pastime in a space where it doesn’t interrupt anyone else. Full size snooker tables with dedicated lighting, golf simulators, table tennis or simply just somewhere with a bar where you get together with friends and watch sports or films on a huge TV screen. A beautiful place to socialise is a popular reason for Swift Unlimited’s designers to get creative. It’s also not unusual for this social space to become an occasional overspill for overnight guests to bed-down on the sofa-bed and enjoy their very own suite. Swift flexibility at its best. Also worthy of note - Swift Unlimited Living Annexes specialise in offering a 24/7 independent garden living space for elderly parents, bringing families together on one plot and removing the stress of later life challenges. More information can be found at granny-annex.co.uk. Collaboration with specialist interior designers, audio-visual experts, architects, pool installers and landscapers ensures that the finished result is even more outstanding and incorporated into your home’s appeal. As their name suggests, Swift Unlimited aspire to be just that… efficient, fast and unlimited throughout their turn-key projects. Case Study

GERRARDS C RO S S It’s party time – whenever we want it to be Liz is a very busy lady – successfully supporting a family and managing a rewarding working life. Her family home is beautiful and spacious, but she knew that an extra, flexible space would serve them well. A detached extension away from the house clearly became the answer – a perfect spot to create a stunning new suite that could be…a private place for “me-time”; a welcoming environment for socialising with real panache; a place to indulge – relaxing in the hot tub; an overnight place for guests…the possibilities were endless. After an enjoyable collaboration, the inspirational design was created and this substantial project was confirmed and able to go ahead under Permitted Development Rights – so no planning application was required. Significant groundwork was required, which in winter months was the “pain” before the “pleasure”. The reward… in just 5 weeks, Liz’s beautiful suite was ready to use. Here is what Liz thinks: “With Swift, we followed our instinct and it proved to be the right one. It is simply a superb company - family run, they have a team of people who are willing and knowledgeable, and who put the customer at the centre of the service...not something that happens a lot in these strange times. The consultation process for the design was two-way, open and honest; the build team were hardworking, polite, positive and always prepared to listen and laugh when the unexpected happened (always acts of God!). We are absolutely over the moon with the final product, which will get many years of use and which is already causing a flurry of plans to be put in place. Swift as a company proves there are still businesses out there that operate honestly and ethically - we would not hesitate to recommend them.”

rawing on Brown’s Hotel’s history as a favoured residence for literary greats, the suite is designed as a space not only for rest and relaxation, but to spark inspiration and creativity through art and interesting objects, with every detail of the room, from the rugs to the individual art works carefully considered. The suite features furniture and art that resonates with the designer and his eclectic taste. Several pieces can be found in Paul’s office at his Covent Garden HQ, such as Christopher Simon Sykes’ impressive photograph of Chatsworth House library and, notably, his 1970s leather desk chair by Mario Bellini. As another personal touch, Paul has also selected a small library of art and design books for the room. Several of Paul Smith’s notable collaborations feature heavily in the room, including sofas, tables and leather goods from his recent ‘Everyday Life’ collection with Italian luxury furniture company DePadova; Type 75 lamps from the longstanding

partnership with British lighting brand Anglepoise; and checked wool blankets designed by Paul for design company Maharam. The partnership came about naturally, through Rocco Forte Hotels’ Director of Design Olga Polizzi, who is responsible for the design of each of the individual rooms at Brown’s Hotel and is a long-time visitor to Paul Smith’s Albemarle Street shop. Further references to the Albemarle Street flagship shop, which is located just metres away from the hotel, are dotted about the room. They include custom Paul Smith + The Rug Company rugs and a Maharam headboard, both of which feature a geometric pattern inspired by the building’s iconic iron façade. Uniquely quirky details, such as the banana door handles, the fire ‘dogs’ (which have been custom made to resemble Homer, Paul’s first canine shopkeeper), a robot figurine made from a vintage camera, and the striped fireplace tiles, are abundant in the room, a reflection of Paul’s ‘classic with a twist’ philosophy and his trademark whimsical sense of humour.

94

Other key talking points from the room include: • Limited-edition prints from photographer Julian Broad, a friend of Paul’s who shot his wedding pictures. • A selection of soft furnishings, including blankets and cushions, from Paul Smith’s namesake homeware collection which was released earlier in 2022. • An art wall featuring a diverse selection of prints and original artworks – a signature detail in every Paul Smith shop.

Homes and Interiors

Select pieces from the suite, including prints, custom details and the Paul Smith home collection, will be available to shop with an in-suite catalogue provided to guests. Paul Smith says: “Being asked to design a space for such an iconic Mayfair institution is a great privilege – and I’ve had a great deal of fun in the process! Just like Browns does with its rooms, we design every Paul Smith shop differently to celebrate the area’s individuality, which is just one of the reasons the project appealed to me. On a more personal level, I’m so pleased we’ve been able to include objects that inspire

me personally and I hope, in turn, they’ll inspire the suite’s guests.” Olga Polizzi says: “It is exciting to have a Sir Paul Smith suite at Brown’s Hotel. It is elegant, bright and happy and has a lovely sense of fun. The sitting room is full of interest with its wall of pictures, smart sofas and flamboyant cushions. The bedroom is strikingly different, with its sense of calm and space. He has caught the feeling of Brown’s Hotel, but with a Paul Smith twist.” The Paul Smith Suite starts at £5,500, roccofortehotels.com

Q&A

with

ANDREA MELO HOPKINSON, FOUNDER OF WINDLE DECOR HOME STAGING AND INTERIOR DESIGN

How would you describe yourself ? I’m an interior designer, founder and mum to Bruna & Bianca, two adorable cats. I love travelling and good food with my perfect companion - my husband. Tell us a bit more about you... Born in Brazil, I changed my career to become an interior designer in 2019 after completing my qualifications at BAID. I was born into a family of home enthusiasts who were great influences on my personality; all my aunties are home lovers and one of them is an interior designer. I moved to England 15 years ago and worked for a few companies but always felt unfulfilled. Then a few years later following my passion for home decor, I decided to become a professional, then got my qualification and set up my own business.

IMAGES © JACK HINDS PHOTOGRAPHY

What are the latest trends in interior design? I see mainly behavioural changes, one of them being people seeking a timeless design that will stand the test of time. Trends and quick home fashion are seen with caution not only from the environmental point of view but also for cost saving. Also, I see a change towards eclectic design, the matchymatchy isn’t as appealing as it used to be, and people are rather interested in the stunning results of style combinations which can make the space look quite unique. On the other hand, speaking on trends - interior design is an evolving industry and for 2023 I see along with classical clean lines designs a lot of organic shapes, for example, curvy sofas and chairs; accessories made of natural materials such as clay and rustic stones; green! Everyone wants green in some way (me included) - having plants, green on the walls or on furniture. In terms of metals, the favouritism for brass continues strong and keeps going with finishes in bright gold, brushed or antique.

What have been some of your best experiences at work? I’d have to say the last two projects I completed because I worked with two amazing ladies that had exceptional taste and I learned a lot from them. The project in Rainford was so exciting as it had a lot of Victorian and mid-century antiques mixed with contemporary Italian furniture that needed to connect. It took me some time sourcing and experimenting on mood boards, but the result was exceptional. The second project was to bring life and colour to a beautiful home of a busy young family, all members had different tastes and ideas, and the client wished for a cohesive look and warm feel of a family home. Great clients make great projects - my client was open-minded accepting changes and gentle introduction to colours which allowed me to achieve the vision of her dream home. How do you achieve great looks in your design? I put a lot of effort into my designs but it’s very much a conjunction of factors; good taste, quality products, working with reputable suppliers, extensive sourcing, and finding creative solutions for problems. Traditional vs contemporary style? I absolutely love the quintessentially English style with a modern twist and also love the Scandinavian style but adding warm neutral colours and not so minimalist. windledecor.com

P.S. Last book you read? Blindness by Jose Saramago. Dream buy? An idyllic holiday home in the south of France.
