My life ... KATHRYN OTTO, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE CHESHIRE MAGAZINE
How would you describe yourself ? Determined, ambitious and thoughtful. Where is home? And work? Home is Christleton in Chester, a beautiful village just on the outskirts of the city which I adore and is very much my happy place. Work is wherever it needs to be, mainly Cheshire, Manchester and London. This year, we have been working with clients overseas and expanding our concierge business, so this has meant travelling to Spain a few times - which I am not complaining about! What did you want to be when you were younger? A newsreader or an interior designer! My earliest memories are of me with a calculator and an Argos catalogue adding up how much all the furniture would cost that I had carefully chosen for each house that I had picked from the local estate agents (back in the day when you could walk into an estate agent and pick up details for houses on the market). Name a few of your favourite places to be... My favourite place is honestly my home and I love spending a weekend walking the dogs on the canal and popping into my local (Ring O’ Bells) for a roast and a glass of wine. If I am not at home, then I am usually overseas. I love travelling, seeing new places, meeting new people and experiencing new things. It is so good for the soul and it gives your mind time to think and process new ideas. When I’m in London I do like to visit TING restaurant in the Shard - their pad thai is incredible and I crave it every time I return to the capital.
“We have lots of exciting plans that we have been working on and I can’t wait to see them come to fruition” 12
What or who inspires you? I know many people say their parents but it really is my father from a work perspective, he gave me the best grounding and taught me how essential it is to have a good work ethic and respect. My mother has taught me to make the most out of life and to appreciate everything. Apart from family, I have been blessed to have worked with some of the best managers guiding me in my career and I know I could pick up the phone to many of them now and they would help me if I needed them. What was the last gift you gave someone? I bought a new winter coat for my boyfriend from Reiss and some flowers for my friend Kevin. Tell us a secret/fun fact? I used to be a synchronised swimmer. I still think I am after too many cocktails on holiday! Your mastermind subject? Publishing. Favourite Chester hotspot for tea or coffee? For Sunday lunch? For a cocktail? Sunday Lunch has to be Ring O’ Bells.
The CHESHIRE Magazine | Regulars
However, I recently visited Upstairs at the Grill where their roast was equally as good, and their terrace is perfect if you are celebrating a special occasion. For cocktails, it has to be Opera Grill. I am partial to their special jammy dodgers and love to share one of their Asian platters. What’s on your Christmas list this year? Clogau has brought out a new advent calender which looks incredible. I’d also like a Dyson hair dryer and you can’t beat a hamper from Harvey Nichols. NYE plans? We are hoping to go on a cruise in January so it will be low-key, probably a meal out somewhere lovely with friends. What are you most proud of since taking over TCM? There is so much I am proud of, but I am most proud of our team who, like many businesses, worked together through the last few years overcoming lots of challenges. We did it together,
“I love travelling, seeing new places, meeting new people and experiencing new things. It is so good for the soul and it gives your mind time to think and process new ideas” with thought and respect for one another and just got our heads down and worked hard and thank the Lord it paid off. We are producing a magazine that not only gains response for our clients - which is incredibly important to us - but also a magazine that our readers love receiving and reading. I often drop magazines off in the villages so I can gain feedback and people are quick to comment on how much they love the magazine, what their favourite covers are or tell me how they keep several copies on their coffee table. That is the reason we work hard each month to produce such a lovely publication. What continues to drive you? The thought that the future has no boundaries. There is so much we want to do as a company and we have so many ideas. We have lots of exciting plans that we have been working on and I can’t wait to see them come to fruition.

“
Variety the Children’s Charity has had the support of The Cheshire Magazine over so many wonderful years. The magazine has helped Variety support children in the north west to reach their full potential and live their best life as every child should expect to do. Variety is known for its spectacular fundraising events and having the Cheshire Magazine in all our goody bags is always greatly received thus helping Variety to raise substantial funds to support disabled and disadvantaged children in our region. Variety has been highlighted in the magazine on numerous occasions showing the great work we have been doing for over 75 years helping provide a broad range of specialist life changing equipment to those children that need it most. The team at The Cheshire Magazine have become great friends of Variety and we hope that friendship and support continue for many more years. Happy Birthday Cheshire Magazine from Variety

The Cheshire Magazine is always creating exciting opportunities for local businesses to market themselves. The Cheshire Magazine has allowed me to establish credibility and position my business in front of high-net-worth individuals within my local area. I love how unlike traditional magazines The Cheshire Magazine focuses on storytelling rather than hard selling. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with Kathryn and her wonderful team over the last few years. Congratulations to the entire Cheshire Magazine team on what is a remarkable achievement - 100 issues, created, printed and distributed. That’s something special! Love, Abigail Lucy x

ICONS P
Patek Philippe began its legacy in the nineteenth century, founded by Antoine Norbert de Patek and Jean Adrien Philippe and has a tradition of innovation that has been crowned by over one hundred patents. As the last family-owned independent watch manufacturer in Geneva, Patek Philippe enjoys total creative freedom to entirely design, produce and assemble what experts agree to be the finest timepieces in the world. Independence, tradition, innovation, quality and craftsmanship, rarity, value, aesthetics, service, emotion, and heritage are the ten fundamental values of the Genevan watchmaker.
THE ERA OF THE STERN FAMILY
The Stern family has bought Patek Philippe in 1932. Thierry Stern has been the president since 2009 and he has been ensuring that the company remains at the leading edge of watchmaking technology and research, focusing on continuously improving the quality and reliability of its timepieces.
26
TODAY
Patek Philippe is also known for creating grail watches, whether that is in the form of the sleek steel lines of its Nautilus, a new Calatrava reference, or the wonderfully complex Grandmaster Chime, the most complicated Patek Philippe wristwatch. It is also discerning when it comes to women, with its 2009 Ladies First Chronograph, powered by its first entirely in-house chronograph movement, being widely credited with kickstarting the trend for women’s complicated mechanical timepieces. Patek Philippe has its own team of engineers working in its Advanced Research Department, founded in 2005, where they explore and develop new technologies and materials. The Ref. 5250 in white gold was the first Advanced Research limited edition model. The 100-piece limited edition introduced a revolutionary silicon-based escape wheel for a Swiss lever escapement, presented with calibre 315 S IRM QA LU SI®. At the Watches of Switzerland Group having partnered with Patek Philippe for over half a century we are proud to offer our clients the chance to fall in love with this remarkable brand. The highly experienced and trained
staff in our showrooms are therefore able to share their knowledge on the brand with clients ensuring they find the right timepiece. Whether it’s a Calatrava Pilot Travel Time, or the elegant Patek Philippe Twenty-4, featured above. We welcome new and existing clients to our Manchester showroom to experience for themselves what the brand has to offer. hatever your budget, the thought is the same – “I’m only going to wear it once because everyone will have seen me in it!” We buy outfits that our nearest and dearest see us in and that we put on social media, but we can never be seen in it again. I mean, that would be committing a cardinal sin! So these discarded, worn once clothes sit in our wardrobe, losing value and gaining dust – we have no other option…or do we? This month, I wanted to introduce to you the concept of designer rental. Most of us are only really familiar with renting men’s suits but let me tell you, there’s a huge world out there, full of designer clothes, shoes, bags and jewellery! What’s not to love? You hire the pieces you want, wear them for your event and then send them back! And if you really love it, you have the option to buy it! I’ve created some looks with companies I have worked with when styling my celebrity clients for the red carpet…
What I’ve Been up to…

Pride of Britain is just around the corner, so I’ve been designing a gown for a celebrity client, plus travelling around the UK sourcing clothes for private clients. I also celebrated a ‘big’ milestone birthday across the pond.

Fe s t ive Dating
A l e x M e l l o r- B r o o k , C o - f o u n d e r a n d D a t i n g E x p e r t a t S e l e c t P e r s o n a l I n t r o d u c t i o n s looks at five festive dating trends to look out for this season
O
ur dating decisions can be heavily influenced by the seasons and Christmas plays a big part. So, how do you spot if someone you’re dating isn’t quite on the same page as you?
Marleying and Scrooging It sounds like a Dickensian Christmas Fayre, but it’s actually a pair of pretty prevalent behaviours: one annoying, the other downright nasty, to watch out for. The relatively benign one is Marleying like the ghost in A Christmas Carol - it’s an old flame who reemerges during the Christmas season. No, the Marley shows up because they’re single at Christmas and they think reviving an old relationship will be easier than getting a new one going in time for the office party. Honestly, if it didn’t work out the first
time, it probably won’t work out when you add Christmas to the pressure… you have been warned. Scrooging, on the other hand, is that horrible trick of dumping a partner just before Christmas so you don’t have to buy them a gift. Oddly enough, despite the British becoming quite creative in cutting Christmas costs, this doesn’t feature anywhere in the statistics. However, it’s apparently very prevalent on dating sites, so if this happens to you, it’s not you, it’s them - they’re a Scrooge, and you’re better off without them.
Snow-Globing We’ve all felt this one; that moment when Christmas causes our hearts to melt, and suddenly we feel that we can’t help but love our current date. Sadly, the feeling lasts just as long as the festive turkey, and then we wake up to reality and realise we’ve overcommitted ourselves to somebody who isn’t right for us. Now imagine being on the other side of that experience - that’s being snow-globed. Snow-Manning The opposite of snow-globing happens too. Just like the cartoon character, the snow person melts as soon as Christmas is over and rather than a grown-up conversation about splitting up, you find you’ve been frozen out. Some research suggests that as many as 53% of winter flirters will end up being snow-manned. In other words, their wonderful new partner simply melts away.
Dry Dating New as a hashtag for 2022, dry dating or sober socialising, has been around informally since the beginning of the pandemic, but it’s showing up big time on social media as a criterion for this winter’s dates and get-togethers. Why? Because since the pubs closed in lockdown, many people have seen that ‘mindful dates’ work out better and 20% of the under thirties age group has a strong interest in #drydating.
Winter Coating Finally, winter coating - the intense pressure we all feel to get coupled up for Christmas. Everybody seems to want us to be part of a relationship as the cold weather rolls in, and so there’s a tendency to pick the person who seems most like a good match and just … settle in, like pulling on a cosy winter coat. Problem is, as the weather warms again, that coat gets cast off in favour of something more summery. So, whether you’re the coater, who’s unexpectedly craving a serious relationship, or the coatee, who’s on the receiving end of a suspiciously rapid demand for commitment, being aware of the winter coating phenomenon can save you from a spring heartache. www.selectservices.co.uk

Rural Divorce vs Urban Divorce Elizabeth Hassall, Head of Family and Relationships at HM3 Legal on how a divorce financial settlement might be structured
ELIZABETH HASSALL
Farming situations are very specific, with their own unique ingredients as farms can provide an income, lifestyle and housing for different generations. Often there is a dynastic nature with farms being passed from generation to generation. Retired parents might have accommodation on the farm with their child living in the farmhouse with their own family. Challenges for divorcing parents can include:
A
ny marriage breakdown can have a massive emotional impact regardless of geography. When the conversation turns to the assets involved, it is important to understand how a financial settlement might be structured. For a divorcing couple involved in a family business which provides a livelihood for them, their parents, siblings or children, special care is needed when dividing up the pot in terms of percentages between the parties. Questions include: who controls the business? What about liquidity? Would it be a problem to ‘pay off’ the departing party? Will there be enough to continue trading and enough wealth generating an income for those staying? Viability will be important if you are persuading others in a business to approve a lump sum settlement. Children from first and further marriages must also be considered.
• Bank Debts This could mean the farm (or a chunk of it) has to be sold to pay out the person leaving who may or may not have become a formal partner to the farm.
• Who Owns What? Transactions over generations can literally lead to blurred boundaries. Plans may have been lost or misdrawn, or diversified businesses might have evolved on farmland or in buildings, without formal plans in place. Without compulsory registration at the Land Registry owners might not be the divorcees, but the extended family.
Urban Divorce
Urban divorces are often similar in nature when shareholders are extended family members who want to divide assets. The rural dimension is particularly complex and as a farmer’s daughter and sister, I have considerable experience in this area.
‘Jaw, jaw rather than war, war’ This quote from Winston Churchill reflects my own viewpoint. When dealing with divorce or separation I encourage round-the-table meetings, or in different rooms if preferred. My team works closely with the commercial lawyers at HM3 Legal to help people resolve complex situations involving families, shareholders and businesses. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me to talk through your options. www.hm3.legal
L - R: ELIZABETH HASSALL, LINDSEY KIDD, MD
Rural Divorce
• Tax Charges Old partnership documents can be a hindrance especially when assets have not been valued for decades. A divorce valuation might prompt a surprising tax charge if assets are sold or transferred at market value.

Meet the Cheshire Party Planner Founder Gemma Bradley offers party planning services for children’s parties, weddings, birthdays and much more
What’s the story behind the beginnings of Cheshire Party Planner? Five years ago, I took the decision to converge my entertainment and event industry skills under the umbrella of Cheshire Party Planner LTD. As a Bachelor of Arts teacher, it made sense for me to start with what I knew and so I began planning children’s parties. With over twenty years of experience in various fields, I started introducing my other skills – from performing children’s entertainment to glitter face painting. Being a party planner means being multi-skilled in many roles, from a Master of Ceremonies to the unofficial photographer – I’m happy to do it all. Over the last two years, the business has grown, and I’ve planned everything from baby showers to 60th birthday parties. My main aim at parties is to make people happy and create something
memorable. It’s such an honour to be welcomed into a family’s special day. I don’t want them to do a thing other than enjoy themselves. I work with very talented suppliers and pride myself in matching the perfect supplier for the client’s needs. A lot of people ask if I find it stressful, but I really don’t! I look forward to the party, to bring all my ideas and plans to life. Plus, by this stage, the client feels like a friend – which is probably why they continually choose my company. One client hired me to plan three parties, this year!
You specialise in children’s parties – how does being a mum help you put together the perfect party for your clients’ little ones? Being a mum and a big kid at heart, really helps me understand the psyche of children and put together an amazing party that they’ll adore. I think of all the elements, right down to filling a fantastic party bag. As a parent, I know what I would expect of someone helping at my party and I take care of it all. Your child’s birthday is a special time, so you want to spend the party with them and your guests.
What have been your 2022 highlights? It has been a privilege to help a domestic abuse charity plan its first ball.
I have developed lots of relationships with local wedding venues and started to help brides and grooms plan their weddings. One of my unique selling points is, that I can undertake bitesize aspects of a couple’s big day (for example, offering help with bespoke décor design or entertainment) or I can plan the whole event. I am also proud to announce my nomination for a Cheshire business award. The results will be revealed later in the month on Instagram @cheshirepartyplanner.
Tell us about a favourite party you’ve organised recently... It’s hard to choose one as I tailor my creativity to meet my client’s specifications and budget, for each event. But I loved a summery, joint 21st and 40th, that was a ‘bright colours’ theme. The weather was great, so the festoon lighting and vivid coloured lanterns and balloons looked incredible, stretching across the pool. Especially at night, the uplighters I’d hired beamed up the walls. I even created my own fresh, ice flowers for the Champagne buckets. All the little details are what adds up to make an unforgettable day. www.cheshirepartyplanner.co.uk 65

MEET THE CHEF:
CRAIG
RUTHERFORD To celebrate Manchester restaurant Habas making it into the prestigious Michelin guide just five months after launching, we speak to their talented Head Chef about his loves and loathes of the kitchen What’s your first food related memory? Licking the raw cake mix off a spoon when baking with my mom as a child.
and to whom so much of the listing should be credited, got a massive hug that day. I was grinning from ear-to-ear.
Describe your style in three words. Modern, traditional and fresh.
Who's your biggest supporter? Other than the team here at Habas, with which I’m blessed, it would have to be my mum. She’s always supported me, she’s brilliant.
What’s your favourite dish to create? I love creating vegetarian and vegan dishes, those fitting with various dietary requirements. They challenge you more. Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? I get crazy ideas from literally everywhere and have to explore them. I always start with one element of a dish, and then build around that. I've got a great selection of books at home too that I love flicking through and pulling an idea from. As a chef you’re always inspired by those you work alongside and admire. What are you most proud of in your career? I think it has to be what we’ve achieved here at Habas. Opening in the middle of the pandemic was anything but easy but we achieved it. I remember standing in the kitchen last Christmas looking out to a full and thriving restaurant and thinking we’ve done it; that was a special moment. That and securing a Michelin-Listing just five months to follow opening. Our GM, Kelly Wimbleton,
What would be your last meal? Can I have two? It sounds corny but I’d like the first to be with my friends – a great Sunday roast in a good pub, totally relaxed. My ultimate final dream meal would have to be one served at Gareth Ward’s restaurant Ynishir in Wales and where I ate earlier this year. It was hands down the best food I've ever eaten; if it were my last meal I’d die a happy man. What foods don't you like? Kidney beans. I think I developed PTSD as a child when my mum would pile them into her chilli and I’d have to pick them out. What is the most challenging ingredient to work with? Artichokes are renowned for being a nightmare and so I actively avoid them. They’re so tricky to peel and there’s a lot of wastage. They require a lot of time and effort for little reward. What advice would you give to an aspiring chef? Have a good attitude, be humble, and be prepared to work harder than you’ve ever worked before. The harder you work in the beginning the easier it will be in the long run. Make sure you love it too. If you’re not happy with what you’re doing, especially in a kitchen, you’ll never achieve your goals. www.habas.co.uk

Location The Retreat is located in the picturesque hamlet of Hungerford close to the town of Newbury. It is easily accessible via car with excellent transport links to M3, M4 and A34 motorways. The Retreat is housed in a beautiful Grade 11 listed 18th century building and recently opened in May 2022 as The Signet Collection’s second hotel. The London based luxury interior design practice, Taylor and
Turner, have stylishly transformed the house with elegant antiques and art but also ensuring modern day standards of luxury are met. On either side of the sweeping driveway, you are met by quintessentially, English croquet lawns and views of the Wessex Downs and 16 acres of magnificent grounds.
Guest Rooms and Suites There are 49 classic rooms, 3 Cultural rooms and 3 suites at Elcot Park. Each room has unique character and has been designed giving careful consideration to antiques, use of textures and art. The 3 suites are named after the estates’ former residents, Percy Shelley, Bushby Bacon and Sutton.

We stayed in The Bushby Bacon Suite. The suite was exceptionally large with a super king sized four poster bed. The bathroom has a fabulous roll top bath positioned in a bay window, a large twin sink vanity unit and a spacious walk in shower. The added bonus of staying in this suite is the private mini bar but also you can help yourself to items in the pantry such as cookies, popcorn, crisps and soft drinks. The suite also has an adjoining room with bunk beds for the children making it ideal for families.
Food and Drink The food offering is exceptional at The Retreat mainly thanks to Culinary and Operations Director, Ronnie Kimbugwe. He has worked with Gordon Ramsay at Claridges and the renowned Bell and Dragon Country Inns. The

Retreat has 2 restaurants Yu, a Pan Asian restaurant and 1772 an all day brasserie incorporating private dining areas. Yu celebrates Pan Asian fine dining. We were treated to dishes such as chawanmushi, sushi, sashimi, black cod and wakatobi. The decor is refined and elegant making it perfect for a romantic meal. Guests enter the restaurant via a lacquered petrol blue panel corridor and arrive in an intimate room decorated with antique woven fans. 1772 restaurant is named after the date the original building dates back to. It offers relaxed all day dining from breakfasts, dinners and Bollinger Champagne afternoon teas. A Sunday roast can also be enjoyed. The current menu includes roasted chorizo, crispy Lincolnshire pork belly and Herefordshire rib of beef.

Facilities Within the hotel grounds, there is a walled kitchen garden, tennis courts, an outdoor infinity pool complete with designer cabanas and a Whispering Angel Pool Bar. Use of the croquet lawns is actively encouraged and there is a children’s play area being developed. The Courtyard consists of a bakery, coffee house, hair and nail salon, wine store and a monthly farmer’s market that attracts many visitors. The Signet Spa is a small health club with a hydrotherapy pool, treatment rooms, steam and sauna, mud Rasoul, salt floatation room, gym, spin studio and wellness area.
Personal Note A new country house getaway that is well worth a trip. We left after two nights feeling rested and ready to face the week ahead. www.retreatelcotpark.com

We were very much impressed by the sheer size of our suite. In fact, I think it is the largest suite I have ever had the good fortune to stay in. The staff were enthusiastic and welcoming and our check in was informal and we were treated to a complimentary glass of wine in the hotel’s reception. Well behaved dogs are welcomed at The Retreat. In fact, guests are welcome to dine with their dog in The Atlas Room and The Orangery. We brought our labradoodle,
Maggie and she loved the grounds and meeting other dogs around the hotel. The spa treatments were beyond relaxing and I actually was able to unwind to the point of falling asleep during my neck back and shoulder massage. IMAGES © ASTRID TEMPLIER

BMW’s M division has built some awesome kit, including the latest-generation M3 and M4, but the performance badge is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. One of its presents to itself is the new XM sports SUV, a plug-in hybrid 4x4 that’s all about power, not efficiency. With a 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine and electric power as well, the XM comes with 644bhp as standard, but a Label Red model will come next year with 738hp. That means 0-62mph takes just 4.3 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 155mph. For those who prefer to drive more serenely, however, the rechargeable lithium-ion battery allows the XM to cover between 51 and 55 miles on electric power alone. And if you charge regularly, the car will average between 176.6 and 188.3mpg. BMW XM, www.bmw.co.uk

SPECTRE, THE ECO-FRIENDLY GHOST Rolls-Royce has finally launched its first electric car, the silent and luxurious Spectre
S
pectre might be associated with another British car manufacturer, but now it’s the name of Rolls-Royce’s first electric car. An enormous two-door luxury coupe designed to slip silently through city streets, the car is billed as a “prophecy fulfilled”, after the company’s co-founder, Charles Rolls, foresaw an electric future. The only catch, he claimed, was the lack of infrastructure. Of course, infrastructure can still be an issue for electric vehicles, but Rolls-Royce says the Spectre “demonstrates how perfectly Rolls-Royce is suited to electrification”. With quiet motors producing a massive 577bhp, the three-tonne car can waft from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds, but it can also achieve 320 miles on a single charge when driven more sedately. And while the high-luxury Rolls-Royce interior will not necessarily encourage any kind of sporty driving, Rolls-Royce claims not to have neglected handling altogether. There’s trick suspension developed on the Cote d’Azur, which includes 18 sensors to monitor steering, braking and power delivery to ensure the car remains stable at all times. It’s still a luxury car, too, with the battery used as a 700kg package of sound insulation. And there’s a system designed to prevent the rocking caused when one of the wheels hits a bump to help deliver what Rolls-Royce calls a “hallmark magic carpet ride”. Mercedes-Benz has revealed its new EQE SUV, the latest in a line of electric cars that sit alongside existing models. At roughly the same size as the GLE-Class, the newcomer is based on the same underpinnings as the EQE Saloon, and it comes with a choice of long-range, high-performance electric powertrains. Officially, the maximum range is over 360 miles, while the most powerful model – the AMG 53 – comes with 678bhp. There’s tech in the cabin, too, with Mercedes-Benz’s Hyperscreen display, including a 12.3-inch screen for the front passenger and the ability to tell whether the driver is distracted. STAR PERFORMER Volvo’s spin-off brand Polestar has revealed the third model in its line-up, the imaginatively named Polestar 3 SUV. Available with two electric motors and a huge 111kW lithium-ion battery, the 3 will have a range of up to 379 miles on a single charge, and it’s thought a single-motor version with even more range – possibly over 400 miles – will follow in due course. As well as advanced powertrain technology, Polestar has also fitted the car with a clever touchscreen infotainment system and more sustainable materials, including welfare-certified leather and traceable wool upholsteries. As The Cheshire Magazine celebrates its 100th issue, James Fossdyke has been sampling another Cestrian centurion’s most complete product yet – the Bentley Bentayga EWB
W
hether you’re talking in terms of years, Premier League appearances or even magazines, those that make it to 100 have to be doing something right. That’s how we like to see it, at least. And Crewe-based car maker Bentley, having celebrated its 100th anniversary just recently, is definitely doing things right. So right, in fact, that the company is enjoying record profitability and sales, as well as establishing its eco credentials with a certified carbon-neutral factory here in our home county. And, without wishing to spoil the conclusion of this missive too much, I’m delighted to inform you that the crew in Crewe has smashed it yet again with the new Bentayga Extended Wheelbase, or EWB for short. Essentially, it’s the Bentayga you know and love, but with an extra 18cm added between the front and rear seats. That means there’s more legroom in the back and that means the big SUV can double as a roomy limousine – or at least that’s the idea. But to dismiss the EWB simply as a stretched Bentayga is to do it a disservice, because it turns out this overgrown 4x4 is not a mutant, but arguably the most complete, compelling car Bentley makes. And given that range includes the sublime Continental GT, the glorious Flying Spur and the already brilliant standard-wheelbase Bentayga, that’s quite some going. And we haven’t even mentioned the limited-edition cars such as the Bacalar and Batur, both of which are stunning examples of what Bentley’s designers can do. Even so, we think the Bentayga EWB is a stroke of genius, and not only because it allows Bentley to add another £50,000 or so to the Bentayga’s asking price. Of course, that’s good for business, but the EWB is also incredibly good at what it does, merging the talents of a luxury limousine and performance SUV. For the clientele the EWB is aimed at, you could even argue the premium price represents reasonable value. The performance SUV part of that isn’t much of a surprise. After all, the standard-wheelbase Bentayga is an incredible feat of engineering that somehow manages to defy its weight and offer awesome performance and handling. Incredibly, though, the EWB is just as good, with an uncanny ability to mask its bulk at speed and in corners. That’s partly down to the four-wheel steering, which is designed to make
81
Drive | The CHESHIRE Magazine
Bentley Bentayga EWB Price: From £190,000 Engine: 4.0-litre V8 petrol Gearbox: Eight-speed automatic 0-62mph: 4.6 seconds Top speed: 180mph Power: 542bhp
the car as agile and as stable as possible. By turning the rear wheels in the opposite direction to those at the front, the EWB can turn around in a smaller circle than the standard car. But by turning in the same direction as the front wheels at higher speeds, the EWB becomes more stable. Of course, there’s more to it than that. Bentley has tweaked the suspension to suit the extra weight and length of the car, and that means the car doesn’t roll too much in corners, even if you take them at improbable speeds. And improbable speeds are easily achieved thanks to that V8 engine, which produces a plentiful 542bhp, then sends it to all four wheels. As a result, getting from a standstill to 62mph takes 4.6 seconds – just a tenth of a second slower than the standard-length car – and the top speed is 180mph. In itself, that is not especially miraculous, but the fact the EWB can do that while also being an incredible luxury limo is quite spectacular. And luxurious it is. With the new Azure specification and Airline Seats, the Bentayga is as much a car to be driven in as to drive. The seats are particularly impressive, using sensors to adjust the temperature and even your posture for maximum comfort. Feeling them at work is a little disconcerting, but the effects are profound. There are few more cosseting and more comfortable ways of travelling. Of course, Bentley will sell you Azure versions of the ‘standard’ Bentayga, but they won’t offer as much room as this extended version. No matter how tall those in the front may be,
82
there’s plenty of legroom, and that can be increased further by moving the passenger seat forward – something that can be achieved using the removable touchscreen in the back of the centre console. Space and comfort aside, there’s also the quality of the fit and finish to consider. As with any other Bentley, the Bentayga EWB can be equipped with a huge selection of leather and wood trims, so there’s a massive number of personalisation options. And every part of the cabin is hand-finished, from the wood trims that are matched to individual cars to the leather that’s analysed for any marks or imperfections before it’s cut and stitched. The attention to detail is astonishing, and that helps to make the car feel even more special. It isn’t just a limousine and a sports car, either. The Bentayga EWB is a capable 4x4 that can tackle much tougher terrain than the average buyer will ever subject it to. Thanks to the extra length and weight, it won’t be quite as capable as the standard-wheelbase car, but it’s great on loose and slippery surfaces. It’ll work on fields, tracks, or snow. Naturally, it isn’t completely perfect. The ride isn’t quite as supple as we were hoping and the elongated rear door does look a bit awkward, but otherwise the EWB is a masterpiece. Somehow it balances the contrasting requirements of three completely different cars – a grand tourer, a 4x4 and a limousine – in one (admittedly quite large) package. For that alone, it’s worthy of commendation. More importantly, it’s yet another indicator that Bentley, a relatively small company in Crewe, can produce one of the best cars on the planet. Here’s to the next 100.

Game Cha hanger I N C O N V E R S AT I O N W I T H I M R A N S AVA S , C E O O F TA P E In 2020 you were nominated for ‘Role Model of the Year’ at the National Diversity Awards. What does being a role model mean to you? I have never thought of myself as a ‘role model’ but if you are ever given the opportunity to be one then you should take it because you can have a positive influence on a person’s life. Role models are most powerful when you can relate to the path they’ve walked. I hated to walk into rooms where everyone looked the same, that is why it is important to help people who look like me, get into rooms that I once struggled to get into. We tend to become like those who we admire so I feel a responsibility to show a 10-year-old brown kid, that by me being in business that they too can aspire to become someone. I learnt that to really create change; we must help people change the way they see things through our actions. The best way, perhaps the only way, to create a difference is to be an example. Be kind and good-hearted wherever life takes you. You can become an example and show the best behaviour by spreading love and goodness.
86
Generosity allows you to give freely without expecting anything in return. By being generous with your time, talents, money, and love will change your life and the rewards will be greater for you than they will be for the person on the receiving end. In the company of leading with kindness and gratitude every day we can become the ‘role model’ that we wished we had.
You were also nominated for ‘Most Influential Business Person of the Year’ last year at the MBCC Awards- what did this mean to you? Some are motivated by a need for awards, some by money and some by their social media following. I started from a different place; from the fondness of helping and connecting with people. I have been recognised over ten times, but it does not give me any sense of accomplishment. I believe that true success and happiness lie in freedom and fulfilment. There are communities in the world that lack the resources and opportunities due to their circumstances. If they had an opening, we would have more innovation, solutions, and voices. I wanted to help and so I created Tape UK to support small businesses, entrepreneurs, and freelancers as I believe that a small business can change the face of the world The Tape UK multi-service model had no blueprint for me to follow but my thoughts were ‘why wait for someone to create it when you can create it yourself?’. We cannot hope to build a better world without improving individuals, being able to share what I have whether it be knowledge, wealth and experience is an important factor in my leadership. Many defy success as ‘how much money you have’ but being genuinely in love with what you do is ultimately what makes you rich.
More recently you have championed a #Individuality campaign, which launched at the Storyhouse in Chester. How do you feel about diversity in Cheshire as a whole and what changes need to be made? You’ll never reach perfection because there’s always room for improvement, 13.8% of the population belongs to an ethnic group. One million businesses in the UK are owned by ethnic minorities, they do so much for the UK economy, and provide skills, talent, services, and products across the whole range of sectors. Belonging to an ethnic background myself, I thoroughly believe that diversity and inclusion are essential in business today. A healthy variety of people from different pockets of society and cultures provides the balance of voices and the range of thought needed. As many businesses still do not reflect the different positive attributes of society in terms of their staff and senior positions. But also, there are barriers that still halt individuals from owning a business themselves. The success of diverse entrepreneurs can have a significant impact on businesses in the short and long term and create a much just society. If we want to see real change, staying persistent in educating humanity on how similar we all are than different. This is how humanity will evolve to become better.
Tell us more about your current campaign called, ‘See Me, Be Me’, in partnership with the Anthony Walker Foundation and M&S Bank. It was a privilege to participate in a project which was delivered to high schools and community groups on how to lead a positive and successful life. Leading figures from an array of professional backgrounds were featured and I was the youngest
contributor to the campaign which allowed me to voice to students about my own personal and professional journey. When I was a child, I found it hard to relate to successful people as none of them looked or spoke like me. I came from an immigrant working-class family, single mum, free school dinners and social housing. I have always communicated from inside out about my journey reaching Tape UK to inspire and give hope, as without hope we have no future. Articulating what I believe to be true produces the best possible outcome because stories have meaning, and facts without meaning are boring. Now I find myself in a more affluent world and my business would not be as good or had the same impact had I not endured my past experiences. Being able to speak at schools and to see a child’s face light up from my story inspires me in what they may become. The greatest legacy that we can pass on to children is not money or material things accumulated in life but gift a legacy of character and wisdom.
What is your motivation and ultimate end goal? A person is not defined by the amount of money that they have made whilst they were alive but by the impact they made to others they left behind. My aim is to help underrepresented individuals be the best versions of themselves and the goal is not to simply cross the finish line but see how many people I can inspire to run with me. www.tapeuk.com instagram: @byimransavas twitter: @byimransavas facebook: byimransavas tiktok: @byimransavas

5 Minutes with CHRIS BURROWS, HEAD OF PRIVATE CLIENT AT GLAISYERS ETL
W
hen it comes to planning ahead for your family’s financial future, working with an advisor who fully understands the management and growth of your personal and business wealth is paramount. Chris Burrows, helps high-net worth clients to face a variety of challenges, including planning the gifting or inheritance of their assets; the management of their personal finances including business assets and personal health & welfare planning. In our exclusive Q&A with Chris, he offers his specialist insight on how best to manage your assets for the future.
options for passing on their shares. Some families will want to take on running the business, while others see it as an investment and want to pass on the value instead. Estate planning will help clarify your options; be it bringing people into the business or passing on its value either during your lifetime or following your death. Businesses can benefit from inheritance tax relief in the right circumstances, and it’s important to know whether your plans take advantage of any exemptions or reliefs.
What is estate planning and why is it important?
My spouse and I have both been in relationships before. Can we provide for each other but also protect an inheritance for our respective children?
Estate planning means taking control over the inheritance and management of your property, business and financial assets so that when you die or can no longer make decisions, there are appropriate arrangements in place. This could include making a will or powers of attorney. Appropriate estate planning can also help you to make sure your estate will be passed on in a tax-efficient way, making the most of any available exemptions or tax relief.
I own a business; are there extra things I need to think about? All business owners should think about succession planning and make sure they understand their
Couples often put off their planning because they’re worried about this issue, but it affects lots of families. A good estate plan will look at the resources available to both of you and how these can be used for everyone’s benefit. We might use a trust in your wills to ‘ringfence’ assets when the first person dies. This means the surviving spouse can continue living in the joint home or receive the income from investments, but ultimately, the value will pass back to the children of the person who has died. Each person can protect their own assets for their ‘side’ of the family. Other options might include lifetime gifting or working with your financial advisor to make sure your pension and life insurance will tie in appropriately with the plans you make in your will. If I can’t make decisions for myself in the future, what’s the best way to make sure my wishes are followed? The prospect of losing the mental capacity to make financial or health decisions is a very common worry. If you don’t put plans in place then the people closest to you can be faced with problems dealing with your money, business and medical decisions. A Lasting Power of Attorney lets you nominate people you trust as your attorneys to make decisions for you when you can’t. There are separate LPAs for financial and health decisions, giving you flexibility over the decisions others can make for you.
88
Are there extra things a business owner should think about when they make a Lasting Power of Attorney? Business decisions can be very different from your general financial affairs. Close family members might not really understand your business or there might be regulatory requirements about who can run your business if you’re not able to. A Business Lasting Power of Attorney lets you separate business decisions from your personal finances. This gives you the option to involve people who will know how to run your business in your best interests. For example, you could appoint your business partner and your spouse to make business decisions for you, but separately appoint your spouse and children to make your personal financial decisions.
I want to give some assets away while I’m around to see the family enjoy them. What are my options? Lifetime planning can range from simple gifts of cash or property to more complicated arrangements, such as lifetime trusts or family investment companies. The right option will depend on the value of the gift and how much control you want to retain. If you give assets away, there is a risk that the beneficiary might not use the money wisely or it could pass to someone outside of your family through a divorce, or if the beneficiary dies. Trusts or companies can give you more control over who benefits from your family wealth, and when they receive the money.
I own assets in a different country. Can my estate plan deal with this? We deal with lots of clients who have assets or families in other jurisdictions and can help you work out whether English law or the law of a different country will affect your plans. It may be possible to cover your international assets in your English estate planning, but there can be advantages if you make wills in each jurisdiction. If you make
wills in more than one country, it is important to ensure that they don’t conflict with each other, so your estate can be administered smoothly following your death.
Why should I instruct Glaisyers ETL for my estate planning? The Glaisyers ETL Private Client team is dedicated to helping clients find the best way to manage their estate planning. Dan Hoolahan, Founder and Designer of Utology Designs shares his latest project – a brand new jewellers in Tarporley
U
tology Designs began organically after I graduated from Falmouth University with a degree in 3D design. Whilst working in bars, I began to experiment by making homewares in my parent’s garage. I was driven to create things that were beautiful yet simple - all of our designs at Utology are functional; they are intended for everyday use, so it was important to me that they were hard-wearing and made from FSC certified hardwoods. Really, it all began with a coat hook. I made an oak coat hook for Mum’s bathroom in a minimalist style and, when I put them for sale online, they proved to be popular. We’ve now been lucky enough to sell coat hooks to people all over the world. Although I intended to make things for people’s homes, I soon found myself involved in exciting commercial projects. We’ve made hooks, shelves, bookcases, cabinets and tables that have been used in a wide range of projects. We’ve helped to furnish rooms in 9 hotels, and provided coat hooks for Liverpool Football Club’s new
100
training ground and Bristol City Football Club. At the beginning of 2021, my best friend joined the business as the scale of some projects gave me the opportunity to expand the team.
THE PROJECT Francesca’s company, Anuka Jewellery, have just opened their store in Tarporley. We thoroughly enjoyed consulting and collaborating with Francesca to ensure the display cabinets, wall-mounted cabinets and the shop counter were perfectly tailored to her needs and to her brand. They are a certified B Corp jeweller who specialise in recycled silver and fair-mined gold. We wanted to make sure that the cabinetry was delicate, beautiful and non-invasive in order to complement the jewellery perfectly. I first met Francesca a few years ago when doing an exhibition called Pulse in London. She bought some of our coat hooks for her home and then a couple of years ago she came to our workshop to commission a bespoke picture shelf. That conversation then led to me commissioning her to make a bespoke fair-mined engagement ring for my wife. Francesca got in touch in January this year to say she would be opening a shop and asked whether Utology would be able to help fit out the shop. Having worked together before, I knew that this would be a great opportunity and that the aesthetics and values of the businesses were well aligned.
Homes and Interiors
created so that final designs could be approved and we were given the go-ahead to get making.
CHALLENGES THE BRIEF The brief was to create two free-standing display cabinets, a counter which incorporated a third cabinet and two wall-mounted cabinets. There was also a tool shelf for the workshop and hooks for aprons. Francesca had a pretty good idea of what she wanted when she came to us. Glass cabinets with oak framework and brass detailing. She wanted them to have a delicate and lightweight appearance, so the framework needed to be as thin as possible whilst being strong, hardwearing and practical. Sustainability is very important to Anuka jewellery, as it is to us, so this was a key part of our discussions as the project progressed. Some elements of the project were designed alongside the client; Francesca sketched a range of ideas, based on her needs, and we developed the final cabinets from her feedback. Other parts, including the counter, came to life after she provided a drawing of exactly what was in her mind’s eye. Working out how best to bring the logo to life on the front of the counter was a fun and unique challenge. CAD (computer aided design) models were
The biggest challenge was displaying the logo on the front of the counter. The counter is made up of oak slats, with the Anuka logo appearing out of the negative space. For various reasons, simply cutting it out wasn’t going to work, so each piece of oak was carefully measured, traced and then cut with a hand saw to achieve the desired shape. We used a grid system to plot out exactly where each piece needed to be positioned on the board behind. Fortunately, the logo is all straight lines, but it’s also symmetrical, so there was very little room for error. Another challenge was working with 25 sheets of glass in our compact workshop - thankfully, we managed not to damage any of them!
FEEDBACK Francesca has told us that a lot of people have been asking about the cabinets and the counter when they go into the shop - this has been really exciting to hear! She told us that it “has been a brilliant journey to go on” and she is “just so pleased [she] came across our company all those years ago”. www.utology.co.uk
