My life ... ALEX MELLOR-BROOK , CO-FOUNDER, INTERNATIONALLY CERTIFIED MATCHMAKER & DATING EXPERT AT SELECT PERSONAL INTRODUCTIONS

How would you describe yourself ? Passionate, focussed, and dedicated. Where is home? I grew up in Bramhall and Cheadle Hulme, and I’m always amazed at how much it changes...and don’t get me started on the Airport Relief Road. Home is with my family. We are a great strength of support for each other, especially in times of adversity and uncertainty, which everyone has faced over these last eighteen months. And work? I’m the Co-Founder of Select Personal Introductions, a high-end matchmaking service for professionals, celebrities, entrepreneurs and millionaires. I have coached celebrities from ‘The Real Housewives of Cheshire’, and Coleen and Linda Nolan for ‘At Home with The Nolans’. I’ve also appeared on ITV Granada Reports, and the BBC as the regions dating expert. Select Personal Introductions specialises in matching like-minded singles throughout the Northwest and Leeds, whilst also providing a high-end headhunting and matchmaking service for regional, UK, and international clients. From our HQ at Spinningfields, Manchester - our team of matchmakers work with our private extensive database of professional singles, our network of experts, our accredited and approved matchmakers and dating professionals from across the globe, using our scientifically proven relationship profiling program to help introduce clients to their ultimate match. What did you want to be when you were younger? I had a passion for cooking when I was younger, which my wife finds hard to believe, considering she does most of the cooking. But she is an incredible cook which makes going out for meals a bit of a let-down. Name a few of your favourite places to be... I love visiting Anglesey because I proposed to, and married, my wife there. She prefers the Caribbean. What or who inspires you? My child. The pandemic has challenged everyone in so many varying ways. He continues to adopt a positive attitude to life, and I’m blown away, and in total awe, of how he’s adapted and embraces the modern world.

I have met some incredible people who have been through quite extraordinary times, yet they never give up, and always look forward with a positive outlook

What was the last gift you gave someone? Tickets for Soccer Aid - UNISEF 2021 at Etihad Stadium.

Tell us a secret/fun fact? When I first met my wife, she wasn’t at all interested. But over time, I managed to secure a date or two. A Valentine’s Ball led to us winning a dancing competition and one of the prizes was a box of Matchmakers chocolates. Never did I know that we would both become matchmakers – meant to be! I’m also a black belt in karate, which helps me stay focussed, becoming assistant instructor at local Dojo’s, teaching adults and children. Who or what would you place in Room 101? Bad manners. What’s been your biggest life lesson? Being a matchmaker, I have met some incredible people who have been through quite extraordinary times, yet they never give up, and always look forward with a positive outlook. Your mastermind subject? Love! Favourite Cheshire business you work with? That could get me in serious trouble. Our team of experts include the inspirational duo; Life and Dating Coach Debra Thorpe and Personal Stylist Karina Taylor, both based in Cheshire - two incredible women who look after our clients with the utmost dedication, passion, and commitment. www.selectservices.co.uk

Mandarin Oriental is situated in the exclusive neighbourhood of Knightbridge, renowned for its wealthy visitors. With so much competition in the capital, what is it about the hotel that attracts these guests to you each year? After our £100m renovation in 2019, we positioned our hotel as being ‘reimagined and reinvented’ and are capitalising on unique location between the glorious Royal Park and bustling Knightsbridge. wellness practitioners together with bespoke treatments and journeys from our awardwinning partners. Most importantly, what truly differentiate us is our colleagues. We are committed to exceeding guest expectation by surprise and delight them at every opportunity, we want everyone to leave with everlasting memories in most aspect of their stays. The hotel has a team of over 500 employees that create a genuine British atmosphere and service. In your role as General Manager, what is it you enjoy most and how do you lead the team each day to maintain the level of service? Delighting our guests as well as our colleagues. I’ve had a privilege of working with amazing people and meeting wonderful guests from all around the world. During time of uncertainly, communication is essential. It is significant to keep our colleagues motivated, engaged and reassured. We provide weekly/monthly activities of colleagues’ programmes including service recognition awards

and hotel updates, virtual learning experiences, wellness classes, departmental trainings, leadership meetings and team building activities as a continuation of our charity campaign, FANtastic London, where we have delivered over 60,000 hours of community services since the launch in 2018. We also communicate via our internal platform called MyMO, where I provide weekly VDO updates since the lockdown in March 2020. The crisis has brought out the best in many people globally, and it is uplifting to see communities rallying around each other. There are countless acts of kindness, generosity and self-sacrifice that after all of this we will never forget and be grateful for. Also having a passion is key to success, and I also believe in G.R.I.T. – guts, resilience, initiative and tenacity. What bespoke services do you offer, to go the extra mile for your guests? We actively communicate with our guests from pre-arrival to post-stay, every need is anticipated as we continue to delight and exceed expectations in all aspects. Today’s guests are first and foremost digital customers, they reply on various digital channels to navigate and communicate with brands through exceptional, informative and personalised experiences. We have countless of memorable proposals in the garden, or in the Loggia overlooking Hyde Park as we are the only hotel in London with unique outdoor space that offers panoramic park views with a private Royal Entrance from Hyde Park. Once of the most recent ones we had was a surprised proposal in the garden where the groom exclusively commissioned the Band of Household Cavalry to play their favourite songs.

Wedding Petiquette Founder of DogCo, Caroline Bate, suggests her top tips for making sure your four-legged BFF can play a part in your big day

our wedding day can be one of the most incredibly nervewracking experience and having your pet by your side might make all the difference as you deal with missing flower girls, late caterers and inevitable weather situations. But it is important that you make sure they are comfortable being a part of it. First consider their personality. Do they get anxious in crowds, nervously wee-ing in excitement? However much you may want them with you, it isn’t worth making them feel uncomfortable or scared. Instead, maybe consider having them there for your ‘getting-ready’ or include in a photo shoot before your big day. There’s plenty of ways to include them, without stressing them out. If you think they will be happy sharing your day, then a good rule of thumb is to limit the time to two hours and have a nominated chaperone

2

3

1

who they adore (and who is not part of the ceremony and who can take them on a lovely long walk before), so they can join in the fun without getting stressed and you can too. Note: Male dogs do tend to want to mark their territory, so distract them from the lovely looking pews and Auntie Ethel’s coat, with a discreetly hidden but all-encompassing treat as you walk down the aisle! Speaking of impending toileting disasters, it’s a good idea to equip said chaperone with an emergency carry pack for quick clean-ups. Of course, this assumes that your venue is pet-friendly. It is worth checking just how pet-friendly they are and making all your suppliers aware so that they can plan ahead and make it as safe and friendly as possible. There’s no point having a photographer who is allergic! Most importantly, if you want your four-legged BFF in your photos make sure your wedding photographer and/or videographer knows in advance so they can think of some creative ideas of how to get them involved. It is also worth getting your pet used to the camera beforehand give them a treat so they associate it with something positive and practice poses if you can.

But be treat conscious. Typically, a time for you to overindulge give guests a heads up that treating your pet with human food isn’t a good idea. Having your pet at your wedding isn’t for everyone. Even if they will be fine, perhaps you don’t want the added stress of making sure that they will be ok on one of the biggest days of your life. Don’t feel bad. Find them something special to do, or book them in with a sitter who will spoil them rotten with long walks and even longer strokes. Maybe they could join you on your honeymoon instead? DogCo offers beautiful yet practical dog beds to suit everyday life and is proud to be accredited by Made in Britain. www.dogco.uk

Ideas to Include your Pet on your Wedding Day

• Walk down the aisle with them • Dress them up • Get them involved in the photos • Include them as a ring bearer • Incorporate their image in your favours or attire • Giving back with a donation to an animal rescue charity

Silver Pink A luxury clothing brand for women who like to live a full life, while looking and feeling fantastic

SALLY JONES

C

reated in Cheshire by Sally Jones, the Silver Pink collection is the finest quality knitwear, shirts and accessories. Sally’s journey began eight years ago, travelling the country as an interior designer, visiting beautiful country houses and meeting new people. She says; “Then one cardigan changed my life; its form and function, colours and how fantastic it made me feel. “Looking back, I’m not sure how the leap occurred. But visiting India, experiencing the vibrant colours and textiles alone made me come alive - That this is the direction for me that’s meant to be. Silver Pink became more than just one cardigan, and more than just a cashmere knitwear company. “Throughout my life, I’ve been inspired by the people I’ve met and places I’ve been, and Silver Pink has become a product of this inspiration. I’ve been surrounded by women like my mother and grandmothers who had an elegance that came easy to them, something I have admired and sought to achieve, and I know I’m not alone.

“One of my biggest inspirations has also been my customers - listening to their wants, needs, desires. To me, it’s always been about contact with my customer and how I can make their experience with my company fun and enjoyable. Life is challenging enough.”

Effortless Elegance “I’ve created a capsule collection made of amazing colours that work together. Each piece of clothing doesn’t just work with one outfit but can fit in your wardrobe as the most versatile piece you own. We all have that favourite piece in our wardrobe. Something that you can chuck on and feel great, feel empowered, can boost your mood, and help your confidence shine. And this is something that I’ve wanted to achieve with my own collection. I want a woman to wear a piece of Silver Pink clothing and feel amazing. I call it Effortless Elegance.”

Growing Silver Pink “My company has grown with a lot of care, passion, love and hard work, from a cashmere cardigan, to a range of jumpers, cardigans and tunics, to then introducing stunning new dresses in beautiful prints, which you can wear many different ways and dress up or down. “Silver Pink was predominantly available at events all over the country, however Covid encouraged us 34

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Style

to make the rapid progression to become a full online experience and now we plan to go back to more exclusive events, alongside web site sales, once events are up and running. I’ve even entered into the social foray and started videos to show you how to wear these versatile pieces.”

Value and Provenance Sally is concerned about ethical and sustainability issues and how clients wear her collections. Silver Pink is definitely not ‘fast fashion’. Each piece is designed to be worn many times and present value for customers. She says “Our clients are becoming much more concerned and aware about the clothes they wear, where they come from, the materials used and how they are made. I have been looking for another UK manufacturer who can create unique pieces with our own prints and designs for new dresses, skirts and shirts. I have found a wonderful non for profit company in London that has taken over the old Laura Ashley factories and is preserving skills in the UK. They have been amazing and along with our existing UK manufacturers we are able to produce even more in Britain. “Our fabrics range from traceable sourced cashmere to blending cashmeres with UK wool yarns and cotton and viscose for shirts. The new UK partnership will enable silks and other natural fabrics. All our prints are unique to us which gives us an edge over other companies. They come from two very successful artists based in London and Hampshire, but I’d like to feature more up-coming fabric designers.”

Wolf and Badger Silver Pink is featured on the Wolf and Badger website which curates independent clothing brands from across the World, with ethical standards including things like happy workers, low impact,

even the use of non-toxic dyes. Sally says; “We’re so lucky to be there! You have to be accepted onto Wolf and Badger so anyone on there has already been handpicked for their uniqueness and special qualities.”

Thank you Sally adds; “Silver Pink is like another child of mine, something that has flourished with time, but above all something that I’m immensely proud of. And for everyone that has been on this journey with me so far, thank you.” www.silverpink.co.uk

PET ETA ALO LOU UDA RIANNA + NINA have announced PETALOUDA: an A/W21 collection full of firsts for the luxury label — the introduction of knits and a committed menswear collection.

D

rawing inspiration from the butterflies of the collection’s namesake, RIANNA + NINA looked to the love and whimsy of the 1970s to craft Petalouda. Vibrant prints of butterflies and florals are paired with other rich, colourful motifs, with each design made using luxurious silks sourced from Como, Italy alongside specially made embroidered wool cashmere. As with all RIANNA + NINA pieces, every item from the collection has been handcrafted by the master artisans of the

label’s Berlin atelier and can be tailored to a client’s exact desires. This collection also welcomes knits to the RIANNA + NINA family. The extra time the brand has spent at home in the past year has made them long for cosiness, and today, RIANNA + NINA is introducing the love for colour and vibrance to a beautiful range of warm knit pieces. While these may have been inspired by the Winter months, their special hues and high-end craftsmanship truly feel at home in any season.

F I N D YO U R F I T w ith C la r e S tob toba ar t This month I share my top ten game-changing workout tips for getting lean

STRONG is

the New Skinny 1. Fire up your muscles! To increase the effectiveness of your workout, activate your glutes. Glute activation can be a combination of warm up exercises that you do at the beginning of your workout to switch on your muscles. To activate my glutes, I do the following exercises: Glute bridges, glute kickbacks and donkey kicks.

4. Mix up your rep volume. Alternating each week between heavy lifting and high reps is the most effective way to get lean. When I do my squats and deadlift sessions, I work to this schedule:

Week Week Week Week

1: 4 to 6 reps with heavier weights 2: 9 to 12 reps with lighter weights 3: 4 to 6 reps with heavier weights 4: 9 to 12 reps with lighter weights

5. Make the last two reps count! Put more effort into these two than any others to ensure your fast-twitch muscle fibres are fully engaged and you are getting the most out of your workout. Don’t forget – pay attention to your technique. 6. Fuel up. Protein allows your muscles to recover and grow after you have been active. By ensuring you always have a post workout meal, or a protein shake to aid recovery, you are using food to fuel your goals. 2. It’s worth the weight. Weighted exercises are by far the most effective option for getting lean and seeing results. Compound exercises such as squats and deadlifts work the largest muscle groups in the body. 3. At the bar. Lift heavy! Put more weight on the bar. It’s not going to make you bulkier; it’s going to make you stronger and leaner.

7. Take BCAAs to get lean and stay lean. They’re essential amino acids and work by increasing your endurance and decreasing post workout soreness. Take them during your workout to give you that extra edge on your workout.

8. At the end of your resistance/weight training workout, finish with an interval session. By powering through some HIIT at the end of your weight training session, you’ll metabolise any fat stores left behind enabling you to burn away more body fat. I will often finish my weights session with five sets of hill sprints or sled pushes. 9. Keep a fitness journal. Jot down in your journal the workouts you complete by including the exercises, reps, sets and weights to keep you motivated and ensure you are always improving. A journal I use is The Gym Edition Exercise Journal 10. Let’s soak. A magnesium salt bath after your workout will help with the recovery of your muscles and flush out toxins assisting you in getting leaner quicker. Personally, I enjoy Better You Magnesium Flakes.

TEE OFF with

TOM LAWTON Meet the Head of Golf at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa , Cheshire Talk to us about your current role at The Mere Resort As Head of Golf I run the day to day operation of the golf area of our business. This ranges from running golf events to looking after our retail outlet and literally anything in between. We have a team of approximately 10 people who help run the golf operation. I also work with the management team to create a strategic plan for the golf department and then manage the execution of the plan. Who have been your career influences? When working my first part time job I had a boss who taught me so much at a young age. I learnt a lot about business from him, both in golf and general day to day operations. My dad has also been a great influence as he introduced me into golf at such a young age and supported me throughout my career. In addition, meeting the Mere members has also had a positive influence on career, they have helped me so much since I started my work at the resort. What’s your first memory of golf? I remember playing golf every summer through school, but my earliest memory would be playing with my dad and his friends. When they beat me for a pound, I was distraught!

“The golf course is fantastic, and the scenery is unrivalled in the area” What’s your favourite course? I have been lucky enough to play on a lot of great golf courses. Birkdale over on the Wirral is probably my favourite, there are so many iconic holes and it’s great to play a course where so many of the professionals have played. From the moment that you arrive it feels special. Are there any dream courses you’ve yet to play on? I would obviously like to play St Andrews with it being the home of golf but would also like to play Augusta where The Masters takes place. The course looks fantastic and the exclusivity is so appealing. It looks amazing on TV. For those who have yet to visit, how would you describe the experience of playing at The Mere Golf Resort? From the moment you arrive at the well-known archway entrance I believe that Mere is such a special place. The golf course is fantastic, and the scenery is unrivalled in the area. There is so much to offer for all different needs, with the unique floating ball driving range to the prestigious houses, which surround the course. The Course Manager and his talented team work exceptionally hard to prepare our Championship Golf Course, so you will not be disappointed. www.themereresort.co.uk

Hello again, this month I shall discuss a few of the commonest mistakes that people make with their family companions RIGHT DOG FOR THE RIGHT HOME A common mistake that I see time and time again is people choosing a dog that is not suitable for their home environment. Remember when buying a pedigree or a pedigree cross dog, that these animals have been bred to fulfil a purpose. Denying them that ability to fulfil the purpose that has been bred into them over generations can cause serious behavioural issues. Don’t just choose a dog based on its appearance or if it is a popular breed of the moment. Always choose a reputable breeder, preferably a litter reared in a family home environment. FEEDING Another huge minefield is feeding. There are three main food types: commercial wet food, commercial dry food and raw foods. There is much debate at the moment at which is the best food to feed your cat or dog. Wet and dry commercial foods are usually often highly processed, either baked at high temperatures or full of chemicals, additives and preservatives. The quality of protein used to make them can vary hugely,

and some cheaper foods are packed full of cereal fillers which can cause digestive and skin issues. There are now air dried rather than baked dry foods and these may provide a more suitable alternative. Raw food is a recent food on the market and seems to be an obvious, less processed more naturel source of nutrition. It is basically just the raw meat ingredients complete with ground bone and offal. But again, the quality of raw food varies hugely, some of them do not provide a balanced diet and should not be fed as a sole agent. There is also potential risk of salmonella, Ecoli, parasites and campylobacter pathogens, not just for your dog or cat but also for the owners! I have found some dogs thrive on raw food; whilst others cannot tolerate it. Also bear in mind that some dogs can be allergic to some protein sources so be careful of the protein source you choose. Personally, I feed my dogs and cat a mix of raw food and a high-quality grain free dry food. But be guided by your pet, try to get the best quality food you can afford, look out for signs of itchy skin and soft stools, tell-tale signs that something may not be right, and never make sudden changes to their diet, always make a slow transition between foods. CRATE TRAINING One of the best tips that someone gave me when I got my first puppy was crate training.

The theory is derived from the idea that dogs are den dwelling animals. It is basically a cage or crate which can be opened from the front. Put your dog’s bed in there and make sure everything positive occurs in the crate, such a feeding, toys or rewards when they go in. It is a great tool for house training as dogs instinctively don’t like to soil in the own beds. It should feel like your dog’s safe place and should create increased feelings of security, safety and comfort. It should not be used as punishment and they should not be locked in there for long periods. I hope you found some of these tips and advice useful, they are based on my experience as a vet and but also as a dog owner. If you can get these basic elements right, it will make having a family pet much more enjoyable and avoid some common pitfalls. MEET THE CHEF:

STUART DOCKET Chef Patron at Docket No.33, Whitchurch, Shropshire What’s your first memory of your love for cooking? When Mum and Dad would have friends over for dinner. The cookbooks would always come out and there’d be a sense of excitement for making something amazing. When did you know you wanted to be a Chef? When I left school. I was working at a local pub and the chef suggested I went to Birmingham College. Where were you trained? Birmingham College of Food, then onto Gary Rhodes in The City, Michael Caines at Gidleigh Park and Gordon Ramsay in London and NYC. I was invited to set up Gordon’s New York restaurants, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and Maze before becoming Head Chef at Maze.

Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? The seasons. Whether it’s the colours, aromas or textures, they all help to bring inspiration to a dish.

What do you love most about your job? Being creative.

What four ingredients are necessary in your kitchen? Salt, butter, sugar, flour.

Describe your style in three words. Seasonal, local, fresh.

What are you most proud of in your career? Our achievements and successes at Docket No.33.

What’s your favourite dish to create? I’ve always really enjoyed creating fish dishes. There’s such a small margin for cooking fish correctly, so working towards it being perfect each time is enjoyable.

Who is your biggest supporter? Frances, my wife. What would you want to have as your last meal? A simple piece of fresh fish, grilled over open fire. Are there any foods you just don’t like? Baked beans. Do you do the cooking at home? We each do our fair share! What advice would you offer to an aspiring chef? Learn each day, ask questions and take your time to rise through the ranks. www.docketrestaurant.com

SPOTLIGHT ON... PANORAMIC 34

Best for... Tasting menus in stunning 360° views

WORDS: CRAIG HOUGH

M

y partner and I made our way to Liverpool’s West Tower to sample the delights of Panoramic 34, built around huge windows that show the city skyline with views from the Welsh mountains to the Irish Sea. The restaurant is well known to foodies in the city, having been in operation for over 13 years. As we arrived at the 34th floor, we were kindly led to our table, where we were instantly hit with the stunning 360° views. We were looking down on Liverpool in all its glory. As this is our love themed issue, I’d be amiss to mention the love story behind the restaurant’s inception. Owner Cathy Frost has overseen the venue from the beginning. Cathy’s previous work included property ownership and management, where she met her husband Hugh Frost and the duo became a relative tour de force in the Liverpool property scene. Hugh’s company, Beetham Organisation built West Tower and brought Cathy in to

create this stunning restaurant on the building’s 34th floor. Chester residents may be familiar with Executive Chef Elliot Hill as he joined the team from Oddfellows Hotel in Chester, where he spent two years as Head Chef. Prior to this role, Elliot started making his name in London as Executive Chef of a small pub and restaurant company in the capital then moved back up north to be a part of the team that launched Hotel Gotham in Manchester. Since January 2020, Elliot has been making his mark on the menu with a series of expertly crafted plates on the A la carte, afternoon tea and tasting menus. And what a tasting menu he offers. The newest menus reflect British seasonality with dishes such as Lightly Spiced and Pickled Carrot, Burt’s Blue Cheese, Barley & Nasturtium, Liverpool Bay Sea Bass, Jerseys, Dill, Almond & Vermouth and Gooseberry, Lavender Honey, Ginger & Creme Fraiche all available. The new Salt Aged Creedy Carver Duck, Celeriac, Yeast, Pear is a particular highlight. Our server for the day was Roberto, who had moved to Liverpool from North Macedonia to complete his master’s degree, fell in love with the city and never

left. Attentive does not even come close to describe the level of service. At one point I assumed there was a jinx in the matrix as he was serving a nearby table and seconds later topping up our wine glasses, all with a smile on his face. His product knowledge on both food and drinks menus was impressive, his passion really shone through. The joy of Panoramic 34 is that each visit to the restaurant differs depending on the weather and time of day. By chance we took a late afternoon booking so saw the elegant dining area transform as the sun went down and the under-table lighting took effect. So ring your friends. Call your family. Email your team. Tell them you’ve booked a meal at Panoramic 34 in Liverpool. They will forever love you for it. 34th Floor, West Tower, Liverpool L3 9PJ, www.panoramic34.com 63

Pink Paradise of Palm Meet Zoe Ellis-Pennick, Co-Owner of Palm Cocktail Bar & Eatery in Chester How did you come up with the concept of Palm? I own a fashion events company and often when I would put on intimate events for brands it would be really difficult (especially in the North West) to get venues that had that wow factor visually for marketing/social media but also delivered on the service, food and drinks side of things. When we decided to create Palm we knew it needed to hit a home run in all those areas. The food dishes are inspirations from places we’ve visited or honestly just some of our favourite foods that the chefs have added their own unique twist too. The cocktail menu was put together by our fab team who created so many of them in house as well as researching classics that they felt the customer wanted or could be adapted for the customer. The interior was all about standing out but in a way that felt natural and relaxed the customer,

64

so everyone felt welcome but impressed at the same time. We hoped if we could get all those elements to align, we would have what we wanted out of Palm. Why did you choose Chester for your first Palm venture? Honestly; because we live here! We wouldn’t have chosen the city if we didn’t think it would work but we knew it would slot right into the great food and drink selection that Chester already has. We know so much about Chester and its food and drink scene, so it seemed like the perfect place to start. What was your inspiration behind the venue’s design? It was more about creating an aesthetic than being inspired by something. We knew we had to create something that customers loved and that would perform well on social media. For us it is all about the attention to detail and making sure we go one step further than the customer and anyone else would expect. Plenty of

picture opportunities and making sure that it’s not about just one area or one particular seat; that the entire space fulfils the customers experience in terms of design and aesthetic. For those who have yet to sample the Palm experience, what can guests expect? Daytime is very relaxed with incredible food that has a ‘Palm’ twist. Somewhere you can dress in your comfiest clothes or your most outrageous dress and neither look out of place! Night-time is all about cocktails and taking the atmosphere to the next level! What does the future hold for the Palm brand - will we see opening in other cities? Definitely; we are already looking at two new locations and expect these to be opening within the next 18-24 months plus we are constantly looking at ways to develop the Chester Palm such as changing and adding small details. www.palmchester.com

Industrial GLAMOUR The team at Kimpton Clocktower share what they love most about their city centre venue

TIM REYNOLDS, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

The hotel rightfully boats that it combines Victorian grandeur with quirky details and modern swagger. Why would you recommend Kimpton Clocktower as the perfect wedding venue for those looking for a city centre location? Because we have a selection of spectacular rooms and spaces that can be personalised to all tastes, allowing you to curate a truly one of a kind wedding. The original features of the venue coupled with the more modern design touches offer a unique balance of history and refinement. We also have a new outdoor event space in the newly converted Waterhouse Way which boasts a fully waterproof cover, cute festoon lighting and heating – perfect for re-creating that Mediterranean terrace vibe. What weddings have you enjoyed the most at the venue? The ones I’ve enjoyed the most have used the spaces to their full potential, from an opulent Champagne and canapé reception in the Winter Garden to a luxurious sit-down dinner in the Directors’ Suite. What would you suggest for the perfect date night at Kimpton Clocktower? The Refuge offers an intimate but informal dining experience with a wide selection of small 68

plates designed for sharing, and then why not make a night of it by booking one of our gorgeous suites, who couldn’t resist breakfast in bed? Christmas is normally a huge time for hospitality, what has Kimpton Clocktower got planned? We’re keeping tight-lipped on our plans for now but past favourites of a festive feasting menu, choral performances, elaborate decorations and drag queen poem readings (yes you read that correctly) are undoubtedly going to be making an appearance! What other upcoming events can guests look forward to? We have an exciting array of activities ahead; The Refuge will celebrate its 5th birthday at the end of September with a party like no other.

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Travel

SHARON CAMERON, REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF SALES When walking clients and customers around the venue, what are you quick to showcase? The Lobby is an area steeped in history and elegance, featuring a Magnificent marble floor underneath a beautiful glass Dome ceiling, this has become the centrepiece of the reception areas and the heart of the building. The most impressive feature is our new addition to the family is of course the 300lb bronze horse sculpture by Sophie Dickens, the Great Granddaughter of the renowned author Charles Dickens. The Directors’ Grand Marble Staircase located to the right of the concierge desk is an area well worth exploring as it has the finest Italian marble and the original stained glass windows with all the coats of arms who the Refuge Assurance engaged with over the year – it’s simply breath-taking. The Ballroom offers a sense of occasion, on a grand scale. Formerly the Refuge Assurance staff dining room, our Ballroom is the largest single event space within a hotel in the North West of England. Our accommodations are luxurious and filled with creature comforts. The rooms boast sweeping double-height windows and elegant wood panelling– no two of the recently

refurbished rooms and suites are quite the same. How welcoming is Kimpton Clocktower Hotel to families, including extended fur family? Due to the large number of spacious double rooms we are perfect for families. Gather your closest crew, both the human and furry kind, and experience all that Manchester has to offer with our Family Moments package. We also offer a PAWfect stay package which offers breakfast, along with a full pet setup in the room, a pet tuckbox, pet guide to the best dog-friendly places to visit and of course a toy and treat or two. Best part is – all pets get to stay for free, and that will never change. The Refuge is increasingly popular on the Manchester food and drink scene with its ever-evolving offerings and pop-up events giving guests an excuse to return again and again. What’s fresh on the menu? We have recently launched Winter Garden At the Refuge which is an Afternoon Tea, available Tuesday to Thursday. We’ve put a spin on the classic format, including a punchy pork and kimchi sausage roll, followed by date and cherry scones. Plus, there’s a host of sweet treats including our version of a Black Forest gateau – a nod to our friends at Monkey 47, whose gin showcases botanicals from the Black Forest. My favourite is definitely the Kimchi Sausage Roll! www.kimptonclocktowerhotel.com 69

You Shall go

to the Ball Michael Josephson MBE discusses the return of his charity ball at Kimpton Clocktower

After a forced postponement, The Michael Josephson MBE Charity Ball is back for 2021. What can guests expect from one of Manchester’s biggest nights on the social calendar? We all deserve a good night out, so the Michael Josephson MBE Charity Ball this year will be bigger and better than ever. We have some absolutely amazing guests lined up, such as Dame Joan Collins, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, Christopher Biggins and Paul Scholes. Lots of legends of sport and screen! We will also have some amazing entertainment, I can’t reveal who yet as I am keeping it a secret, but in the past we have had the likes of Heather Small, Lulu and Texas, so expect someone equally as brilliant. However, of course this is all about the charities. The past year and a half have been terrible for everyone, but charities which rely on real life events to raise money have really suffered – as have the people and causes they are supporting. I really do need to say a huge thank you to Robertson, the headline sponsors, and then all our other sponsors;

70

Beaverbrooks, Boohoo, Elf on the Shelf, Fastdox, Network Space and the Stoller Charitable Trust, because none of it would be possible without them. Why did you choose the Kimpton Clocktower as the venue host of the ball? The event has been held at the Hilton Deansgate in the past which is an amazing venue, but this year it is being used as a Nightingale Court, so

we needed to find somewhere else. I’d been to the Kimpton Fitzroy, which is in London, for the Global Gift Gala, so when I heard they were opening in Manchester I was very excited. It’s a beautiful hotel, very chic and stylish with a huge ball room. I’m very happy with the way things have turned out and can’t wait to bring my event to the Kimpton Clocktower. You have so far raised over £5million for charity, with an incredible £318,900 raised at your last event in 2019. Which charity will you be raising money for this year? I am the Chairman of Patrons and a Patron at Variety, the Children’s Charity. It’s a cause very close to my heart and I’ve met some amazing kids and families from my time there, so I will always support them at my galas. The other great causes will be Teenage Cancer Trust and two wonderful local charities; Mahdlo Youth Zone and Wigan Youth Zone. All of my chosen charities support young people and kids. My childhood was challenging, and it affected me right into adulthood, so I know only too well the importance of having a helping hand when you need it as a kid. I am honoured to support them. If any readers want to buy tickets to the event, or to sponsor or support in any way, please email me on michael@stocksmcr.com

fter battling our way across the M62 and M1 on a Friday afternoon we arrived at the quaint village of Nun Monkton approximately 10 miles outside of York. The perfect setting for The Alice Hawthorn where we would be spending the next two nights. We were greeted by Claire, one of the husband and wife team who run The Alice Hawthorn, who showed us to our gorgeous garden room. The recently built garden rooms have a barn theme, which certainly fits in well with the country style vibe. These rooms come with all the mod cons you could hope for when checking into a hotel these days. Air-conditioning – smart TV – walk-in rainfall shower and a large free-standing bathtub. We were extremely comfortable and relaxed in our room and looking out across the lawn the local rabbits looked quite relaxed too. We decided to explore the local area and take a walk following one of the routes suggested in the walking guide that was available in our room. There were several walks available (varying in distance) and we opted for a short 3 mile walk, which was very enjoyable as we were also eager to return The Alice Hawthorn to enjoy what the bar had to offer. The bar and restaurant are full of character and has been refurbished to a high standard. Local Yorkshire products are embraced on both menus which all adds to the atmosphere, appealing to locals as well as traveling guests such as ourselves. That evening we dined on a 3 course meal which we enjoyed with excellent attentive service and flawless food in both quality and presentation. We started the evening with popcorn prawns which were extremely fresh and coated with the lightest tempura

weekend away

The Alice Hawthorn Yorkshire David Poynton enjoyed the charming country pub in the Historic North Yorkshire Village of Nun Monkton batter, while my partner enjoyed the seabass ceviche, that was packed with flavour. We followed with our mains of guinea fowl and a perfectly cooked fillet steak, so soft and tender that the knife glided through with complete ease. To finish we enjoyed a generous cheese board along with a homemade Bakewell tart, before retiring to the bar area for a tipple of their homemade rhubarb schnapps. On our second day we awoke refreshed and ready for the day ahead, but what better way to start the day than a full breakfast! We started with freshly squeezed orange juice and a refreshing apple and ginger shot before taking on the Yorkshire breakfast. The portion size was just right, the homemade black pudding was outstanding and a must try for black pudding lovers such as myself. The grilled cherry tomatoes on the vine made a pleasant change to what would normally arrive on a full breakfast. There were several other breakfast dishes to choose from including a smoked salmon dish, grilled halloumi and avocado, poached duck

eggs with asparagus and buttermilk pancakes. The selection for breakfast was certainly impressive. Given The Alice Hawthorn’s close proximity to York, we decided to travel in to soak up all of the history and culture of one of England’s most cherished cities. We walked the walls which is a great way to take the city in passing fantastic views of York Minister. After a pleasant afternoon in York we headed back to the Alice Hawthorn where we relaxed some more before heading down for our meal. The evening delivered all the same experiences from the night before, great service and fantastic food which again left us feeling very satisfied. Before calling it a night one of The Alice Hawthorn’s friendly staff kindly guided us

through their wine selection and picked out an excellent Italian red, Sangiovese, which rounded off the night perfectly. The next morning, we had a holiday blues feeling as we had enjoyed our time at The Alice Hawthorn so much, and the time to leave was upon us. But not before another breakfast, this time opting for the buttermilk pancakes which were the vision and quality we all imagine when thinking about breakfast pancakes! Before checking out Claire was kind enough to show us some more of the hotel rooms on offer in the main building. Again, the style flows with elegance in each room. The level of hard work and dedication that the team at The Alice Hawthorn put in, led by Claire and John, the husband and wife team is unmissable. And what they have built is truly special. The Alice Hawthorn serves well as a place to relax, enjoy great food, then walk it off in the village and surrounding areas in Nun Monkton. Or as a base to venture into York. In these times of the staycation The Alice Hawthorn is certainly one to consider. www.thealicehawthorn.com

Our Visit We loved our visit to The Hari, despite its location being in the popular suburb of Belgravia, The Hari feels secluded and was a perfect base whilst we explored the nearby attractions and shops. My partner, John, was a little alarmed when he realised I could be in Harrods and Harvey Nichols within ten minutes. We dropped our bags off in our gorgeous corner suite, that had everything you could need and just oozed luxury and comfort. After shopping during the day, we walked around the beautiful streets of Belgravia and stopped for an evening meal sitting outside watching passers-by. This was simply the perfect break away that we needed (and everyone needs) after the year we have all had.

Personal Note The Hari really does go that extra mile and the team genuinely want you to have the best possible time whilst you stay with them. An example of this was shown on our arrival, as the team had made a chocolate jigsaw using an image of a previous front cover of The Cheshire Magazine. If you are looking for a stunning, stylish stay in the capital, look no further than the Hari. www.thehari.com

Travel | The CHESHIRE Magazine

The Grand York Daniel Khan visited The Grand in York, located in one of the historic city’s most iconic buildings Location Having received multiple recommendations from family and friends over the years, and with restrictions lifted, my partner and I decided now was the perfect time for a little R&R; at the award-winning, five star hotel, The Grand in the heart of York’s city centre. In terms of its size and presence, the Grand certainly lives up to its name, having formerly been the headquarters for the North Eastern Railway Company before it was renovated and reopened as the now legendary hotel in 2010. The interiors of the hotel walk a fine line to balance between the dark, masculine period features that have been lovingly restored and the spacious, light modern qualities that we come to expect from the best luxury hotels in the world.

Rooms and Suites After a cheerful and speedy check-in, we began our journey up to our room which gave us a first glimpse into the features of this beautiful building. As we toured around the hotel’s decadent hallways, we passed the 1906 Bar and the hotel’s bespoke cookery school (don’t worry - we’ll come back to these gems in greater detail later) and travelled to the top floor in the elevator. Upon exiting the elevator, we passed the Grand’s rooftop beehives that have become home to thousands of bumble bees and allow the hotel to harvest its own bespoke, golden honey. The hotel offers stays in its standard ‘Classic Rooms’ or if you are wanting to upgrade your stay you can elect to sleep in an Executive Room, which is what we opted for. The Executive rooms are slightly bigger than the Classic rooms and offer guests complimentary access to the hotel’s spa, a writing desk for those on work trips and king size beds dressed in Egyptian cotton bed linens. The room was wonderfully spacious and had beautiful views of the hotel’s exterior and the lush greenery that York is synonymous with. The bathroom was stocked with Molton Brown toiletries that are bespoke to The Grand and had a white marble walk-in shower and luxurious bathtub.

Restaurant and Bars After settling ourselves in and enjoying a complimentary bottle of prosecco, we readied ourselves for our lunch time booking at the hotel 82

restaurant. The Rise serves modern British cuisine and prides itself in all its produce being locally sourced; there is a real sense that the hotel strives to be as ethical as it is beautiful. The layout was designed by the luxury Interiors powerhouse, Twenty2Degrees and has an honest, artisanal yet unpretentious aesthetic with timber panelling and marble floor tiles. The restaurant is designed almost like a theatre with an open plan layout and a clear view of the chefs producing their own special brand of magic. We began our meal with the artichoke velouté (which was delightfully airy) and some freshly made artisanal breads. For our mains courses, I opted for the 8oz fillet of beef, cooked perfectly medium rare, savoy cabbage and pancetta bathing in cream and tenderstem broccoli. My partner opted for the rump of lamb served with Pommes Anna and jus. Needless to say, we were both left incredibly happy with our choices. Rather than opting for a dessert, I decided to try The Rise’s signature cocktail, The Grand Sbagliato, which has a base of red grapefruit liqueur.

Facilities The facilities at The Grand are second to none. As previously mentioned, the hotel boasts its own state of the art cookery school that offers classes suitable for anyone ranging from those still attempting to

master beans on toast through to aspiring chefs of the future. If attending these classes in person is not a possibility, the school now also provides online virtual classes from the comfort of your own home, although I would strongly advise anyone to take the trip and the opportunity to learn more about the art of food in this unique and dynamic setting. Located directly underneath the main body of the hotel in its atmospheric vaults is the tranquil spa with its 14 metre swimming pool, aromatic steam room and Nordic dry sauna. There is also a well equipped gym, that we opted to sidestep in favour of the steam room. The spa has a team of highly skilled therapists on hand to offer an abundance of treatments including manicures, pedicures and holistic massages to iron out any kinks. After the most heavenly sleep of our lives, we packed our bags and headed for check out. Before doing so we decided to drop into the hotel’s 1906 Bar for a coffee. This lounge bar was designed to look how one might expect a private members-only gentlemen’s bar in the 1940s to be, with an impeccable level of attention to detail so much so that each chair had its own cushion cover with the 1906 logo adorned upon it in satin stitch embroidery.

Personal Note It is worth making the journey to York if only to sample the incredible menu prepared by Executive Chef Nicolas de Visch and his team. This trip became so much more than just getting that much needed R&R and in fact, we made memories that we will cherish until our next stay at The Grand. www.thegrandyork.co.uk 83

Drive Awesome Arachnid

The name ‘Spider’ might conjure images of creepy crawlies, but it’s supercar speak for convertible. And what a convertible this is. It’s called the McLaren 765LT Spider, and it’s essentially a 765LT with a folding carbon-fibre roof. That means you get a 755bhp V8 engine, titanium exhausts and carbon-ceramic brakes. You get a carbon-fibre aerodynamic kit, too. The result of all that is a car that gets from a standstill to 62mph in 2.8 seconds, then races on to a heady 205mph. Just 765 examples will be built, and they’re expected to sell like hot cakes. McLaren 675LT Spider, from £310,500, www.mclaren.com

ownsizing, it turns out, is not just something your parents do when they decide they can’t hack the stairs these days. It has been a buzzword in the car industry for years, and it refers to the act of making engines smaller. Where once the Volkswagen Golf R32 had a 3.2-litre V6, the modern Golf R (more on that later) has a 2.0-litre fourcylinder engine. But it’s even more powerful. The idea is to make cars more efficient, so the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini have never seemed very interested. But now Ferrari has announced a new mid-engined sports car, and the traditional V8 engine has been replaced with a smaller, 2.9-litre V6. Of course, this being Ferrari, it’s a 654bhp V6, and it’s ably assisted by a plug-in hybrid system that brings the total output to 819bhp. That’s more than the V12-powered 812 Superfast – and that was an aptly named thing.

The 296 GTB is equally rapid, roaring from 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds before racing on to a top speed of more than 205mph. But if you drive a little less enthusiastically and start with a full battery, it can do up to 15 miles before it burns a drop of petrol. Ferrari 296 GTB, £TBC, www.ferrari.com 86

CHARGING AHEAD

loves

The Scandinavians are leading the charge (pun intended) when it comes to the adoption of electric cars. So maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that Volvo is also ramping up its zero-emission game. Hot on the heels of the electric XC40 is the new C40 hatchback, which comes with twin electric motors, four-wheel drive and a 78kWh battery that can be fast charged to 80% capacity in about 40 minutes. Volvo expects the car to manage 261 miles between charges, but that is set to improve over time as the car benefits from new over-the-air software updates. QUIET REVOLUTION

MACAN The Porsche Macan is a wonderful thing. Fast, well built and great to drive, it’s the standard by which all other medium-sized SUVs are measured. And now it’s even better, thanks to a lightly revamped design, more powerful engines and an updated interior. It’s a fleet of small changes, but little things add up. Porsche claims the new Macan is “stronger, sharper and sportier than before”. If the German company is right, it’ll blow its rivals into the dust. Porsche Macan, from £47,780, www.porsche.com

If you’re after peace and serenity, there are few better places to find it than in the back of a four-door Bentley. And the new Flying Spur is set to become even quieter, thanks to the arrival of the new plug-in hybrid model. Teaming a 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine with an electric motor allows it to produce 536bhp – enough to take it from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds. It’s also capable of running in silent electric-only mode, improving fuel economy and refinement while reducing the car’s emissions. To celebrate the new arrival, Bentley has commissioned a new limited-edition model called the Odyssean that uses new and more sustainable materials in its interior. The cabin is trimmed in tweed, the wood veneer uses 90% less lacquer and “sustainable leather” has been used extensively. Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid, £POA, www.bentleymotors.com

James Fossdyke finds out why the Volkswagen Golf R is all things to all people

S

ometimes, you just have to accept the fact the original is no longer the best. The first Bond movie, Dr No, definitely isn’t the gold standard, and although we may have invented rugby, we’re no longer top of the tree. The Volkswagen Golf GTI is further proof of this. It was the car that showed us family cars could be fast and fun; it’s the original hot hatchback. But times have changed and the GTI is no longer king of the high-performance Golfs. If you want the fastest, most capable VW hatchback out there, you need one of these. It’s called the Golf R, and it’s almost perfect. In essence, it’s a Golf GTI with an even more powerful engine, but VW has gone one step further, completely overhauling the car’s oily bits. In a GTI, the 2.0-litre engine sends its power (all 242bhp of it) to the front wheels. That’s good for cost and efficiency, but it means those poor front tyres have to steer and put the power down, which is quite a big ask. Even with modern engineering techniques, the GTI is pushing the limits of physics. So, when VW put a 316bhp version of that 2.0-litre engine in the Golf R, the engineers decided to drop the front-wheel-drive shenanigans and swap in four-wheel drive. That meant they could send more power to the back wheels, giving the front wheels a respite and improving handling as a result. As an added bonus, it also makes the Golf R slightly more composed when it’s raining or snowing. In addition, VW’s engineers have also fitted bigger and more powerful brakes that lurk behind the 18-inch alloy wheels, as well as a sportier exhaust and loads of electrical gizmos that help you tune the car to your desires. If you want heavier steering, you can have it. If you want stiffer suspension or a sharper throttle response, it’s there for you. Add in all the standard equipment – satellite navigation, a digital instrument cluster and climate control – and you’ve got the ultimate Golf. Driven normally, the R feels like any other family hatchback. It rides firmly, but not uncomfortably, and while it feels as though it has plenty of power in reserve, it doesn’t feel

the need to unleash them all at once. It’s very mature. Even when you put your foot down, it feels as though it’s holding back. There’s more than enough power, but it doesn’t feel all that much faster than a normal Golf. Until you switch the driving modes. Bin off Comfort mode in favour of Sport mode or, if you’re feeling brave, Race mode, and you’ll find the R becomes a completely different animal. Go anywhere near the throttle and the car just hunkers down and roars off. Overtaking slow-moving traffic on good roads is almost ridiculously easy. And when a corner comes up, you realise just how good those brakes are. Hit them hard and you’ll stop on a sixpence. Not that you need to, because the car handles so brilliantly. The steering doesn’t have that much feel, but it’s very precise, and because there’s so much grip, you can corner at almost any speed that takes your fancy. Where most hot hatches would have speared off into a world of ditches, airbags and insurance claim forms, the Golf just clings on in there. It’s superbly capable. And it’s still comfortable. The suspension is a little more solid in Race mode, but it’s still much less jiggly than a Honda Civic Type R, the Golf’s brilliant-but-bonkers rival. And the interior quality is much better. As you expect from a VW, it’s very solidly built and the materials really do rival Audi in terms of quality. There are one or two rough edges, but you’d never call it bargain basement. But then it shouldn’t be when the starting price is around the £40,000 mark.

Of course, it isn’t all rosy. The infotainment system looks brilliant, but it’s fiddly and over-complicated, which makes it unnecessarily difficult to use on the move. It’s a shame when Volkswagen was once so good at this kind of thing. The sad fact of the matter is the likes of Kia and Hyundai have overtaken them on the tech front. Aside from that the only other issue with the Golf R is nothing to do with the car itself, but more to do with the sort of attention it attracts. Sadly, I’ve become used to the idea of people making rude gestures when you drive a Ferrari or a Bentley (it doesn’t seem to happen in Aston Martins, strangely enough), but the same people who scorn a supercar seem to

90

be much more enthusiastic about a hot Golf. Of course, there are those who want to race you, desperate to prove the £20,000 they spent modifying their Fiesta was worth it, but the same is true if you drive a Lamborghini. By and large, though, drivers in modified Vauxhall Astras give you the thumbs up and teenagers stop and stare, rather than hurling abuse. And therein lies the beauty of the Golf R. It’s a working-class hero that’s fast and powerful, but it’s still practical. It’s fun and sensible all at once. It really will do everything. Whether you have something more exotic hiding in the garage or not, this is the perfect everyday sports car. It works in town, it works in the rain and it works on the school run, yet it works on the racetrack too. What more can you ask for?

Welcome Wellbeing Home Craig Hough talks to Gilles Darmon, Director of KLAFS UK about how you can create your own spa sanctuary at home What do KLAFS UK offer their customers and what is your order and fitting process? We offer the full range of specialist spa facilities, each crafted to the customers’ exacting requirements. Not only do we design and build a wide range of saunas, but also steam baths, along with caldarium, tepidarium, hamam, mud bath, ice lounge and snow cabin facilities. When KLAFS UK are brought on to a project, either when we’re approached directly by a client or through an architect as part of a wider project team, we will arrange an initial meeting with one of our expert consultants as early as we can into the process. There are a number of considerations that need to be taken into account early on and it’s always best that the team and our client are fully aligned from the outset. Our thermal rooms can be made completely bespoke, with clients able to

94

choose from a huge array of personalisation options from the internal wood cladding, steam room finishes and LED illumination to high-tech infrared seats, energy-saving packages and essence injection. When designing and installing a thermal room as part of a larger renovation or new build project, we always work as closely as possible with our clients, architects, interior designers and developers to really make sure the room blends seamlessly into the rest of the scheme and meets both the client and project requirements. The actual fitting process can vary, depending on the size and scale of the project. Usually, we’d allow a couple of months for the installation of a full wellness

suite – but this can certainly be much quicker for smaller projects of just a single sauna or steam room. Our EASY Sauna is also ideal for customers who don’t want to wait for installation and can be effortlessly assembled with just a tool bag and two pairs of hands! Home saunas have seen a rise in sales since the pandemic hit. What advice would you offer to those looking to invest in one for their home? If you’re considering investing in a sauna or wellness suite for your home, we’d suggest getting in touch with our expert team for an initial consultation. We’re able to provide bespoke advice on what might be best suited for you and your home, in terms of space, bench arrangement, and options, but also what benefits you would like to get out of the installation. We can help you to ensure that you not only get what you want out of your project, but that your project achieves its full potential.

no longer the case. Products are becoming more innovative and streamlined – the sauna S1 range has been designed to meet the growing demand for space saving solutions – both the automatic and manual saunas do not exceed the size of an ordinary bedroom wardrobe when not in use. For those on tighter budgets, our KLAFS EASY Sauna is a versatile DIY Sauna that can be quickly and easily assembled. It comes in 34 sizes, nine of which can simply be plugged into a standard 230V socket –making it ideal for compact, urban spaces. Best of all, the S1 and EASY saunas are as easy to uninstall than they are to install so owners can take them with them when they move home. We offer a full design consultancy and installation service to help our clients in their wellness journey, whatever their needs.

What would you recommend to those worried about finding the space for a sauna at home? Many homeowners assume they need a very large room to house a sauna cabin, but this is

Tell us about your Ice Lounge and what the benefits for users are? The Ice Lounge is one of our exciting cooling products, which are growing in popularity with our clients. The Ice Lounge is a cooling, relaxation space lined with backlit acrylic glass elements designed to replicate ice, complete with ice cube-style seats. It can come equipped with a stalagmite or traditional ice fountain and with ultrahigh resolution screens that show dramatic nature images, from snowy peaks to drifting ice floes. We always recommend that a sauna, or any heat up session, is followed by a rapid cooling phase, so our ice lounge provides an ideal post-sauna experience to complete the thermal journey. The heat from a sauna followed by sudden cold not only increases blood flow – liberating harmful substances and detoxifying your body - but also improves the immune system, helps reduce sleep disorder and relaxes the muscles, making it particularly beneficial for those who partake in sports or regular exercise. Installed in a commercial environment, an Ice Lounge is also a very convivial way for guests to cool down. What is a recent largescale project you have worked on that you are most proud of? We were recently selected to undertake a significant three-stage refurbishment project of

a swimming pool and vitality pool at a high-end residential property in the desirable docklands area of East London. The project also included a sauna and steam room, providing a complete wellness journey for the residents. The client selected the KLAFS Matteo Thun sauna to replace the existing sauna, designed with a combination of walnut wood and glass, providing indirect lighting with a view into the pool hall and out across the River Thames. The steam room was also enlarged and upgraded to offer a two-tier seating configuration and ceiling-mounted steam blasts. By implementing these changes, we were able to not only deliver a more comfortable and more spacious relaxation area, but also an enhanced heat experience. Positioning the benches on two levels creates varying heat levels as the steam rises whereas the seats equipped with compressed warm air steam jets provide bathers with a gentle steam blast directly onto their skin. www.klafs-uk.com

PIN NACLE OF

The process behind creating Venice’s largest and highest new suite: The Presidential Suite at Hilton Molino Stucky Venice, designed by Biagio Forino of Studio Forino

F

ormerly a flour mill factory on the peaceful island of Giudecca, Hilton Molino Stucky Venice is a modern Venetian masterpiece steeped in history. The historically listed building has been exquisitely restored with a series of recent refurbishments, including new sophisticated deluxe rooms by Studio CaberlonCaroppi and new spacious, elegant suites, including the new Presidential Suite by Studio Forino. The new Presidential Suite at Hilton Molino Stucky Venice opened its luxurious doors to guests in May of this year. Designed by Studio Forino, the suite is now the highest and largest suite in town, with private access to the hotel’s incredible rooftop pool and bar. Fondly referred to as the First Lady Suite following a visit by Michelle Obama, the spacious new Presidential Suite has been exquisitely designed with the utmost care to detail, ensuring the latest in sustainable design. As part of the Hilton Hotels’ Travel with Purpose commitment of doubling the investment in social impact and cutting the brand’s environmental footprint in half through responsible hospitality, Biagio Forino of Studio Forino ensured the new suite

98

was created using environmentally friendly materials, avoiding using non-recyclables. Creating the new Presidential Suite at Hilton’s iconic Venice property was quite the challenge and process. “My first impression when I started this project was being in an environment with enormous potential. The existing suites were very dark and dusty, and the furniture was dark wood with black leather headboards and carpeted floors. My biggest challenge was to transform the suites into a light and bright environment using soft colours enriched with touches of brilliant colours. I immediately felt that it was necessary to bring the colours, the lights and the atmosphere of the Venetian Lagoon to this wonderful suite. On the walls of the master bedroom of the suite, I transported the skies of Venice with their silver gleams and golden streaks,” says Biagio Forino. Studio Forino’s style is known as being elegant, sophisticated, and welcoming. The Italian design studio typically works on private homes and villas, including luxury bed and breakfasts equipped with

Interiors Homes Homes and and Interiors

every comfort, so transforming all the suites, including the Presidential Suite at the five-star Hilton Molino Stucky Venice, was a significant undertaking. Biagio Forino commented, “The main challenge we discovered was being able to give guests the impression of being in a refined and exclusive private home, respecting all the constraints due to the safety rules of a grand hotel whilst ensuring sustainable, environmental and ecological impact was integrated throughout the design process. I wanted to make the new suites as comfortable as possible with technology present and integrated yet harmonised with a warm and welcoming contemporary style. Among the various materials used, I focused on one in particular for the bedside tables and desks - using carbon fibre- because I wanted to bring the technology of boats into the furniture since we are in a city of the sea also famous for its Moro Di Venezia.” The new spacious new Presidential Suite has been beautifully designed with tranquil blue and silver interiors, large floor-to-ceiling windows allowing natural light to illuminate the delicate Murano glass vases. Determined only to use the finest ecoconscious materials throughout the project, Studio Forino ensured that all materials were used with the certifications that guaranteed compliance with the regulations to safeguard ecology. From the use of glues, woods, to the materials used for the upholstery of the sofas, the beds’ mattresses, the lighting with low energy consumption, the air control systems, etc. “Throughout the project, my goal was to ensure that after a day of cultural visits in the most beautiful and unique city in the world, guests of the hotel would feel the desire to return to Hilton Molino

Stucky Venice to relax and rethink the wonders they enjoyed and experienced. I am proud to have translated my initial vision into reality and introduced contemporary design elements into a classic environment. Using carbon fibre material to create signature pieces such as a fantastic desk in the new Presidential Suite- it is illuminated by beautiful Murano glass and is truly exceptional,” says Biagio Forino. Hilton Molino Stucky Venice’s rooftop city views are otherworldly, which is one of the many reasons the hotel’s pool and Skyline Bar are so popular. The recently opened Presidential Suite is now the highest and newest suite in Venice. Biagio Forino reveals his favourite view from the hotel “is from the top of the tower, which is accessed from the top floor of the Presidential Suite and allows you to see Venice at 360 degrees. It is truly a breath-taking view, a privilege that I wish everyone to be able to give themselves at least once in their life.” Nightly rates at Hilton Molino Stucky Venice begin at 180 Euro per night based on double occupancy with breakfast included. The Tower Molino Suite starts from 1,200 Euro per night and the Presidential Suite starts from 6,500 Euro per night. www.hilton.com, www.biagioforino.it

I also admire Athina Calderone from Eye Swoon for her elegance and chic NYC sensibilities as well as Linda Boronkay, a frequent designer for Soho home. What have been some of your best jobs/experiences at work and why? Mariana: For me, it will always be seeing the final design come together, and revealing it to clients and seeing them so happy that they get emotional. Jenna: One of our recent projects we completed was a small 1 bedroom flat but the client gave us full control and free reign. It was so satisfying to select every single item and surface of that space from the countertops to the bedding. It really allowed us to complete the entire look without compromise. Traditional vs contemporary style? Mariana: Oh there’s so much in between and so many types of ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’, I would say I’m really a mix but mostly inspired by traditional pieces to make them contemporary and fresh. Jenna: I always say it depends on the property. When it’s a traditional property I like to have more modern/ contemporary pieces to add contrast and if it’s a modern space then I like to tone it down with more traditional pieces. That being said, if I had to pick between the two I’m more drawn to contemporary as the style is always changing and being updated.

What would you consider your greatest achievement? Mariana: Sounds cheesy but at the moment it’s living a life I’ve always wanted and feeling free. I’m very happy where I am in life and all that I have achieved so far from work life, friendships and family. Jenna: I think for this Texas girl I’m quite grateful to be able to look back at all the travels and experiences I’ve had to get to this exact point in life. All those freelance jobs and running around trying to make the rent was worth the journey. I’ve always wanted to have my own business and have a partner to grow it together. What would your superpower be? Mariana: Teleporting! Would be my dream to travel anywhere in a flash - exotic places, visiting families. Jenna: To be able to speak any and all the languages in the world. I’ve always felt knowledge is power and think it would be so cool to dip into any conversation and know exactly what they are saying. It would make for a good spy. www.interiorfox.co.uk

P.S. Last book you read? Mariana: My Sister the Serial Killer - it’s funny and creepy at the same time! Jenna: Eeek it was an audible book: Inside Out by Demi Moore. I love learning about true stories that would surprise you. Dream buy? Mariana: Buy land by the beach and create my dream family home and work remotely. Jenna: A luxury beach house either in Cali or Spain and a modern Dutch Canal House to work and travel from.

Know nowiing the Value of Local Person ersona al Serv Ser vice Beth Owen and Sian Davies from NFU Mutual discuss the importance of the personal approach

A

s our world shifts increasingly online, many things have become easier. But often, online speed means less ability to make things truly personal to you and your lifestyle. And for products such as your home insurance, a ‘one size fits all’ approach can feel less thorough, impersonal and leave a sense of unease on whether your requirements have really been met. And, if you have a large home with high-value items that require more careful consideration, it’s all the more important that you feel confident and have the opportunity to have a thorough conversation about your needs and expectations. At NFU Mutual, it’s this commitment to local personal service that sets us apart and has allowed us to look after what matters most to our customers for over 100 years. With over 300 agency offices located in towns and villages throughout the UK, we’re part of the fabric of our communities. More than ever, we’ve seen the power of communities, and how important local knowledge and simply understanding people can be. There’s just something about dealing with a real person, being able to pick up the phone to someone who knows you and your situation. 106

We live where you live, and when you speak to our colleagues, you’re talking to someone who genuinely knows and cares for the area. That means we’re uniquely positioned to understand the nuances and features of your property, a level of understanding you’re unlikely to find through an online provider. We know the value of having real conversations with our customers – it’s how we can be sure we’re providing the cover that’s right for you. And that means that should the worst happen, we’ll be there for you to help put things right. But this local focus doesn’t mean we can’t handle complex or large properties. On the contrary, our national outlook means we can draw on experience across the country, and our local teams are backed by underwriters, claims handlers and specialist suppliers. And whilst our heritage lies in farming and rural insurance, with over 850,000 customers including home, motor and business insurances, you might be surprised at what we can offer.
