Orc rch h estr estra a ting the Fu F utur turee Northern Chamber Orchestra announce thrilling new season at brand new venues in Macclesfield

T

he Northern Chamber Orchestra, the North West’s longest-standing chamber orchestra, has announced its 2022-23 season following its move to the brand new, purpose built, auditorium at The King’s School in Macclesfield, and the beautiful, intimate St Michael’s Church. The season, entitled “Orchestrating the Future”, is the first since the departure of long-standing Artistic Director and leader Nicholas Ward, and sees a host of exciting conductors, directors and soloists, including cellist Guy Johnston, violinist Jennifer Pike, and conductor Jamie Phillips taking to the stage. We spoke to NCO Chief Executive Charlie Rowley, who said “A new and exciting chapter opens in the NCO’s long history in Macclesfield at two new venues: the beautiful and intimate St Michael’s Church and the impressively grand and brand-new King’s School welcome us for the first time, and we hope for many years hence. New places and faces, but we will continue to surprise and delight in bringing world-class music and exciting new talent to Macclesfield” The season opens on Saturday 15 October, when the Hallé’s assistant conductor Delyana Lazrova joins the youngest ever BBC Young Musician winner, violinist Jennifer Pike, for a concert of Beethoven works, including his revolutionary ‘Eroica’ symphony. The season continues in November and December with Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, ‘Jupiter’, conducted by Jamie Philips (November 5), and Haydn’s D major cello concerto, featuring soloist Guy Johnston and directed by his brother Magnus Johnston (December 17). The NCO returns to Tatton Park on Friday 9 December for its annual Christmas Concert. The concerts (3.30pm and 7pm) will include festive favourites, readings and carols sung by the Choir of St Nicholas Catholic High School, Northwich, and the evening concert also includes a tour of the mansion.

2023 opens with the NCO in a reflective mood as it gives a concert at Macclesfield’s St Michael’s Church in remembrance of Holocaust Memorial Day. The concert features Rudolf Karel’s Nonet, written in Theresienstadt prison during WWII. Following this are a baroque and tango special, with violinist Sophie Rosa (February 18); a musical setting of the Stabat Mater sequence directed by Christopher Jones and sung by soprano Caroline Taylor and countertenor Ralph Thomas Williams (March 11, St Michael’s Church); and a concert devoted to the NCO’s outstanding wind section and directed by principal oboe of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, John Roberts (April 1). Closing the series on Saturday 6 May, Spanish violinist Jorge Jimenez directs the orchestra in three of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos alongside two 20th century works, Arvo Pärt‘s Fratres and Alfred Schnittke’s Suite in the Old Style. Chairman of the NCO board, John Phillips, said, “As well as established repertoire by composers such as Bach, Vivaldi and Mozart, we are also playing less familiar works by Copland, Shostakovich and Piazzolla. Less familiar, yes, but always accessible. This is a brand-new musical journey for the NCO and I invite everyone to take it with us”. Reflecting this new beginning for the NCO, discounted tickets for under 30s are available for the first time, alongside free tickets for under 18s and students. Tickets are on sale now from www.ncorch.co.uk, with season tickets and group discounts available. 15

M ar arrr ia iagg e The Cheshire Magazine talks to writer and director Stefan Golaszewski and lead actor Sean Bean about their brand new drama

M

arriage follows married couple Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker) as they negotiate the ups and downs of their 30-year marriage. We see them dealing with the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages, as the drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship. Sometimes funny, sometimes moving, always revealing.

STEFAN GOLASZEWSKI

What’s the premise of Marriage? Marriage is a show about a couple and how they get through things together. I guess I’m trying to write about what it is actually like to be a person instead of what it is like on television or in fiction. People find things difficult and they don’t really know what they feel. They think they feel one thing but often feel something else. They often don’t know what to say to each other, which seems to be like a more truthful depiction of what it is like to be a person. In the show, that’s what I’m trying to do - connect with the audience about what it’s like

to be them and live their lives in a minute-byminute way as opposed to a broad plot thrusting way. Digging into the minute and tiny moments to find the dramas and tensions in the way that we as people live our lives moment by moment. We don’t experience life as big thunderstorms, it’s more like constant drizzle, and that’s what the show explores.

What or who were your influences when creating this show? I would say more novelists and musicians than film makers or playwrights. People like Zola, George Eliot, Bach, and Stravinsky. Their work has blown me in a different direction.

Who are the main protagonists in Marriage? Sean Bean plays Ian. He’s recently been made redundant, his mum has died and he’s in a turning point of his life, where things are changing for him in the notion of who he is. Nicola Walker plays Emma, who has plans of

22

“Casting Nicola and Sean was great

as I was able to rewrite the scripts with them in mind and strip away as much dialogue as I could, knowing I had two amazing actors who could do all that for me, which I prefer.” what she wants to do with her career and looks after her dad. Chantelle Alle plays Jessica, who has found herself in a relationship with Adam which isn’t very healthy and is trying to find her way out of that, but in doing so is discovering things about herself. James Bolam plays Gerry - he’s stuck at home and is trying to control whatever and how little he can. Henry Lloyd-Hughes plays Jamie. He can do a good pirouette but the ice he is skating on is very thin…

Tell us about casting Nicola and Sean. Casting Nicola and Sean was great as I was able to rewrite the scripts with them in mind and strip away as much dialogue as I could, knowing I had two amazing actors who could do all that for me, which I prefer. I like having as few words as possible for a scene.

between people. If I think about it that’s probably the thing that connects everything I’ve written; there’s a central focus on seeking togetherness.

How important is detail to you in this show? I think it is very important for this kind of writing that what we shoot is absolutely what I wrote down to ‘erm’ or ‘err’, ‘yes’ or ‘yeah’. Without that specificity, when I get in the edit, I’m not able to tell the same story. When your plot lines are as minimal as these are and based on such tiny shifts of emotion or mood, you have to have the absolute pinpoint tools to tell that story. If a line has got the words

Tell us about the humour in Marriage... The reason why the stuff I write tends to be funny or an irony really is a reflection of the fact that the world is fundamentally ridiculous and everything in it is pointless - but the only thing that isn’t is love, and the connection

23

muddled in the wrong way or if it’s slightly altered, that can really change the story. So much of what I do is done on implication and inference, and it’s a very specific game. You need all that to be as written, so I am very specific on the script. Actors tend to be very generous as they have read them and understood the nature of what it is, and come on board with that. I’m sure they get annoyed at me for telling them what they have said and when they should have said something else, but they are always very gracious and patient with me.

What inspired you to write Marriage? What inspired the show was seeing the world full of beautiful things, where people fall in love and then do their best to be together. I think there’s something really gorgeous about humans and worth celebrating.

24

together happily for the rest of their lives, and no one can do that, yet everyone tries. That’s what makes it a beautiful thing. In a marriage you are spending all day every day trying to make this thing work that really shouldn’t. It’s impossible to live with one person all day every day for the rest of your life, but you try it because you love each other and it’s worth it and worth trying for.

What do you hope audiences take from Marriage?

SEAN BEAN

I hope that the audience will connect with it and feel that it reflects what it’s like to be them, and that it reflects the warmth, humour and the shared world view that you have in a relationship. The shared moments and joys, but potential for frustration and the impossibilities of it. When people get married they make a completely impossible pledge to be

Marriage only takes place over 12 days or so. It’s an extract of that time in their lives and you drop in to watch their lives. However, what is in those days is rich, revealing and you see what a relationship is... what a marriage is. Their doubts, fears, joy, happiness and heartbreak that go into everyday living.

Tell us about Marriage.

What struck you about the script? Stefan’s dialogue is very natural and free flowing. It doesn’t seem like that sometimes when you are doing it. I guess we all jump to conclusions about how we perceive delivery of

“There aren’t any big stunts or reveals, it’s just a very simple story, simply told, about people and the complications of daily life.” working and going places. Then there’s a younger man on the scene [Jamie] so when you add them all together, he’s quite suspicious. Ian is a very vulnerable and unsettled man and lots of little things begin to stir up into a big pot of worry!

Tell us about working with Stefan. Stefan is very communicative. He has lived with this project for so long that he knows what he wants from us, it’s a matter of getting on his wavelength. I’ve never really thought this much about what I say or do, but in this I feel very grateful to be able to have that opportunity. It’s not method acting, but you really do think about how you are doing a scene. You have to be so truthful in the portrayal to bring out all the feelings and emotions that Stefan has put in. the lines, and sometimes you go for the easiest option, but Stefan breaks it up and doesn’t allow it to just become onedimensional thought. There’s a lot happening in between various sentences and statements we make which is hard to get your head around, but makes it very varied and rich. He also throws in a lot of business: props, opening and shutting bins, getting tissue paper out at the same time as you are talking, which is something you have to get used to. However it’s very well observed and quite hard work to get your head around, even though it’s very naturalistic and free flowing. There’s so many different layers he has created within his script.

What’s it been like working with Nicola? It’s been a real pleasure for me working with Nicola, and I know everyone says that, but it really has.

Why should people watch Marriage? People will be able to see many things that they can relate to in their own lives and their own relationships. There aren’t any big stunts or reveals, it’s just a very simple story, simply told, about people and the complications of daily life. Marriage is available now on the BBC iPlayer

Tell us about the situation with Jamie, Emma’s colleague? Ian is a man who isn’t very sure of himself and not very confident. He used to be when he had a job and was in a relatively high up position. He was a moderator at his firm, but that’s gone and he’s recently lost his mother. Emma is

The Eyewear Stylist An eye for detail can make your special day perfect

I

f you asked most people what fashion accessory has the biggest impact on an overall look they would probably say earrings, necklaces, hats, scarves or shoes. But if you are a spectacle wearer there can only be one answer, the spectacle frames themselves. Sitting directly in the middle of the face, on show at all times they can’t fail to be noticed by anyone you talk to. However, when it comes to special occasions like weddings or major birthday parties they are often overlooked. People can spend hundreds of pounds on new dresses or suits to create an impact and then wear the same pair of spectacles they normally wear to the office. What people may not realise is the huge range of exciting eyewear there is out there now. Dan Scott, The Eyewear Stylist based in Media City Manchester says there are so

34

many options now when it comes to materials, colours, styles and shapes but getting the right one to suit you is the important bit. Having spent 10 years in the business as a Qualified Optician and trained Personal Stylist and having worked with a number of celebrities, Dan Scott now offers his wide expertise in Eyewear Styling either from his private studio in Media City or at his client’s homes in the Greater Manchester region and across the UK. “With one hand I need to open peoples’ eyes to what’s possible now, with custom made-to-measure eyewear now available in a wide range of materials from ethically-sourced wood or acrylic to vinyl records, and with the other hand help narrow down what styles would work for that individual. All whilst making it an enjoyable experience instead of what can sometimes feel like a grudge purchase.” “I recently designed some glasses for a lady’s wedding day. Having provided a colour analysis to determine the colours that would work with her skin tone and I advised her on an eyewear shape that would elevate her the most. Over a glass of champagne, we placed an order for some eyewear, custom made out of

reclaimed wood from a storm damaged forest in Italy. We engraved the date and location of her wedding on the inside of the temple and had the lyrics to her first dance song “Home is anywhere when I am holding you” written across the front of the frame in a contrasting colour. “We decided the finishing touch would be a custom magnetic sun clip made out of a blue coloured wood, with custom blue polarised lenses to match the colour of the bridesmaid’s dresses and the flower arrangements for the wedding. The overall look was stunning and the client was delighted with the result. Wearing her special wedding eyewear is now something she is very excited about and can’t wait to show everyone on her special day. For me, seeing the way a pair of spectacles can transform the way a person feels about themselves is the main reason I love doing my job.” www.theeyewearstylist.co.uk

ASK THE EXPERT Top tips for your wedding day from Tiffany Thurston Scott, Founder of RÓEN Beauty As founder of a makeup brand, I'm often asked about tips for makeup for the perfect bridal look. For methe best bridal makeup look enhances the best version of yourself. I was married years before I founded RÓEN, but I have always been a lover of makeup. My bridal look was somewhat inspired by my location and theme of the wedding. The venue was an intimate boutique location in Beverly Hills and the theme was timeless Hollywood Glamour. I wore a simple fitted Monique Lhuillier dress and my makeup was effortless glamour. My focus with makeup is always starting with 'glowy' skin and having beautiful skin is particularly important on your wedding day. To prepare my skin for the big day I went to my favourite facialist in Los Angeles 3 days before the wedding to help ensure my skin would be healthy and glowing. The day of the wedding I prepped my skin with a face oil that I had concocted and been using for over a year. It consisted of Rosehip Oil, Squalane and Jojoba Seed Oil, very similar to the Elixir Restorative Face Oil that I launched in 2021. Its chock full of nutrients that give your skin an instant outer radiance and also it fights acne by opening up the pores. I highly recommend sticking to face products that you know and love; you don't want to be testing out skin products a month or weeks before your wedding day. My makeup started with a soft pale pink sparkle eyeshadow because I love a sparkly shadow. I recommend our Mood 4Ever palette, it's the most

effortless dreamy palette with stunning pinks and taupe. People are drawn to shiny sparkly things and eyeshadow is a great way to achieve that eye- catching look. Next, I went with a rosy cheek because I’m a rosy cheek girl and I love the look of a rosy feminine cheek. Our Cheeky Cream Blush that we just launched is perfect for that dewy glow, it has Apricot and Rosehip Oil for a nourishing glow and there is a perfect shade for every occasion and skin tone. Lastly, I used Chanel Limitless Lash Waterproof Mascara, which came in handy because I started the waterworks the minute I saw my fiancé at the altar and had to get it together. My extra tips for brides would be lots of hydration a week before the big day, particularly warm lemon water in the morning. Test out your look two or three times before so that you're totally comfortable with it. Have a bridesmaid keep a few makeup products for touch-ups; your lipstick or lip gloss is a must, and a setting powder is good especially for the photos. And most importantly, enjoy the day and don't stress over the little things, it will be an amazing unforgettable day! Why did you become an aesthetics doctor? There is a deep rooted interplay between physical/cosmetic conditions and mental health and wellbeing. In the 10 years since I qualified as a doctor, I saw and managed this regularly in my NHS work but often felt that I wanted to do more. At this time medical aesthetics was growing quickly. I already loved the intricacy of practical procedures in the form of NHS minor ops and found spending time getting to know my patients thoroughly rewarding. Aesthetic medicine is the perfect balance between science and art with forging patient relationships at the heart of it; so it was the perfect fit!

A lot of people want to tweek their looks but are afraid of where to start. What is a good treatment for beginners? There is no one-size-fits-all in my book! Everyone has different aesthetic needs and goals so the starting point for your journey will likely vary from someone else’s. However, if I had to pick, I would say treatments that improve the quality of the skin, such as collagen induction therapy or skin boosters. They combat many issues from prevention to active treatment of signs of ageing. So great for all ages as well as being less ‘daunting’

40

when considering the procedures themselves and any downtime involved.

What treatments are most popular? Full facial treatments or ‘facial profiling’ is very popular at the moment. A range of injectable treatments are used together in a holistic and personalised approach to give you outstanding natural results. Detailed knowledge of anatomy and medical understanding of how and why signs occur allows me to choose and accurately place treatments to target your concern at its cause; reducing lines, replacing volume and harmonising features.

When ideally should you get serious about your skincare routine? The importance of skin health should really be taught from a very young age. But, it is never too late to start looking after your skin! It is simply about understanding its needs at that time. In our 20s and below it is about maintaining quality and preventing damage with a great ‘basic’ routine and healthy lifestyle. As we move through the years the focus then moves to the

inclusion of ‘active’ ingredients that can stimulate healing, repair and rejuvenation, tailored to your needs. Knowledge is power! Understanding what has caused changes in your skin, how individual products work and why they will benefit you will mean that you can adapt your skin routine to always get the best results.

What is the most rewarding part of your job? Of course, I love seeing the fantastic physical results but by far the best part is witnessing the sparkling confidence that treatments can give back to people. If we look good, we feel good! Knowing that I have helped empower someone to reconnect with their sense of self and through that also flourish in other areas of life is truly an honour.

What is next for your business? Expanding my premises is my first aim and then introducing innovative non-surgical energy based therapies to complete a rounded set of aesthetic treatment options. Ultimately, by introducing private general practice I hope to be able to support my patients with both their physical and mental health as well as aesthetic journeys. I love being able to care for my patients holistically and want to give them the time and quality of care they deserve. www.dranataliaaesthetics.co.uk

Mind Set Success starts in your head and if you can achieve what the mind believes, then you are without limits. A positive mindset can be the difference between success and failure along your journey to whatever you aim to achieve in your life. Having a positive mindset provides a focus and is arguably one of the most important aspects of your fitness goals, your confidence, wellbeing and enables you to become the best version of you. You may have an important event coming up that you want to look and feel your best for, for example, a wedding or even your own wedding! Achieving goals is more than completing regular workouts, performing exercises with good form and eating healthily. Your success is determined by your mindset and the belief that talent and results can be developed and achieved with hard work.

So, how can I develop a strong mindset? #1 - Clearly define your goals and remain focused on them. #2 - Consistency is key when it comes to achieving long term results. #3 - Look at how you can improve your lifestyle and review your current habits. It may be that you want more quality sleep, to drink more water, exercise more frequently or set specific goals such as running a 10k or marathon, or losing a set amount of weight/body fat. #4 - Consider the steps that you need to take in order to reach your goals and track your progress to provide you with accountability. Mindset not only provides you with the focus to achieve your goals but it also allows you to take control of your health. The positive effects of this include feeling happier, being more productive, keeping your brain functions sharp, improving your sleep and boosting your confidence.

Here are some of my top tips to help you to improve your mindset: • Wake up early at around 6am and seize the day • Take a cold shower every day. Cold showers in the morning increase circulation, improve alertness, make your hair and skin glow and help to reduce stress • Develop a positive attitude and believe in your inner self to overcome daily obstacles • Visualise success, develop and then track good habits • Celebrate small successes as a way to motivate you to continue to achieve more Achieving your goals is as much a mental process as it is a physical one. Developing a strong mindset will provide structure and consistency to your lifestyle. This will help you to adhere to a game plan that combines the key aspects of your lifestyle. To keep the mind and body in sync you should live in the present moment and maintain full focus on the goals that you are working towards right now. Don’t give up!

Withington Pupils Shine with Outstanding A Level & GCSE results

W

ithington Girls’ School’s Upper Sixth and Year 11 pupils have celebrated an outstanding set of results in their A Level and GCSE examinations this summer, with top grades aplenty; 60.9% of grades achieved by the A Level Class of 2022 were at A* and 86.8% at A* or A while 55% of GCSE grades were attained at the coveted grade 9. In the first public examinations for schools across the country since 2019, Withington’s A Level cohort saw 42% of students achieve three or more A* grades, with 75% attaining a clean sweep of A*/As. In the GCSE group, four in five papers were marked as grade 9 or 8 and 27 pupils, or 34%, secured all grade 8s or above. There were happy smiles and tears of relief and joy as weeks of waiting ended with results envelopes being opened in front of parents and staff, with Headmistress Mrs Sarah Haslam paying tribute to the hard work, tenacity and talents that had led to exceptional outcomes for so many pupils. In addressing the Class of 2022’s stellar achievements, Mrs Haslam congratulated those who had secured a place at their chosen university, including 51 students at Russell Group universities.

50

Eight will take up places at Oxford and Cambridge - along with two 2021 leavers – to read a broad range of degree subjects including Computer Science, History, German & Linguistics, Law, PPE and Spanish & Linguistics. Courses in Medicine or Dentistry lie ahead for 14 of the leavers, joined also by two Class of 2021 students. “Each student has been on their own unique journey – for some the road travelled has led to the opening of doors to top universities, to starting on a path to careers as diverse as engineering, law, medicine, acting, music, fashion, computing, game design and production and, for others, simply pausing to reflect on next steps and to savour the moment,” she said. Mrs Haslam added that this group of students, while applying themselves fully to their academic studies, had not overlooked their broader talents, interests, personal development and social responsibility during their time at Withington. “Despite the pandemic, the 2022 leavers engaged in a wide array of extracurricular activities throughout Sixth Form, from school and community partnership projects such as Manchester

Sings and Young Chemistry Communicators to ‘virtual’ concerts and recitals, achieving success in sporting and academic competitions and activities such as Young Enterprise and MUN. Our Class of 2022 are wonderful role models and have made a fantastic contribution,” she said. Praising this year’s GCSE pupils for their depth of character and involvement in school life, as well as their academic attainment, Mrs Haslam said, “They have been resilient, compassionate and caring throughout the challenges of the last two years. The vast majority of our Year 11s have chosen to remain at Withington and we look forward to watching them continue to develop and grow as they start their careers in Sixth Form. There are many exciting opportunities ahead and they are joined by new students from schools across Greater Manchester and beyond, who have also excelled in their GCSE examinations.” Open Days for entry to Withington Girls’ School will be held on Thursday 3rd November and Saturday 5th November – see www.wgs.org for more details on 2023 Admissions.

olour psychology is much less developed than you might think. We all think we know about colour - pale blue and green are calming that’s why they paint mental wellbeing environments in those colours, grey promotes efficiency - hence the military’s love of grey corridors, red makes us feel more powerful so we should wear it when we ask for a pay rise etc. But most of the ‘evidence’ for this is untested and culturally conditioned. So what do we know for sure?

Colour and Social Status This is a cultural phenomenon, but it’s pretty universal as far as certain colours are concerned. Gold, silver, purple and deep red all tend to suggest high status (and high income) but beware! Humans are incredibly perceptive - we have an innate ability to tell real precious metals from fake and we can instantly assess the quality of fabrics and colours: everybody can tell silk from nylon at a hundred paces and we generally know if a garment is a high quality woven item or a cheap dyed one.

Colours and Emotions Broadly speaking, ‘warm’ colours: red, 52

orange and yellow generally evoke emotions ranging from warmth, through comfort through to excitement, and even anger and hostility. ‘Cool’ colours such as blue and green often calm the emotions and create serenity but can also lead to feelings like sadness … or apathy. So is the best answer to play it safe and wear orange with pale green, or spice up our blue outfit with a splash of crimson to allure our date? Probably not. The best way to look at this is to reverse the process. Think about how colours affect you. Do you feel more confident and sexier in red, or orange, or do those shades cause you to become irritable and on edge? Are you happiest in cool tones or do they water down your responses to the point of indifference? Showing up for a date in colours that play to your emotional strengths can be the best approach, so if people have told you you’re ‘full on’, then toning down your outfit with blue, green or grey might help your date to see you in a more balanced way. If you feel that you don’t have strong social skills or just lack confidence, maybe a pop of red or sunshine yellow may boost your mood enough to give your prospective partner a better view of your personality.

What Colour Attracts a Partner? Well, it’s red. Yes, the colour of love, sex, anger and hostility is the best colour to wear if you’re trying to attract somebody. Interestingly, a study carried out on the TV programme, ‘First Dates’, (2013-present) found that red, along with black, were the two most popular colours worn by contestants on their first date – however, there are caveats. Men view women wearing red as being more sexually attractive. Women view men wearing red as being of higher status. But, maybe this isn’t what you want to portray. So, what’s the take-home? It’s that you should feel comfortable in what you wear. But if you can feel that you’ve chosen your clothes to make a good impression, and to give you confidence in yourself, you’ll probably show up with a bit more self-belief and that’s always a good thing. www.selectservices.co.uk

Family Wealth: Time to Protect Your Assets? S h o u l d y o u c o n s i d e r a p re - n u p t i a l a g re e m e n t ? E l i z a b e t h H a s s a l l f ro m H M L e g a l h a s t h e a n s w e r

A

s a specialist family lawyer, I am often asked these questions by the family accountant or commercial adviser involved in tax planning. Parents may want to pass on their wealth as cash, property — a house, commercial premises or land — or shares in a family business. The family might have worked hard to build prosperity or perhaps assets have been passed down through many generations, such as with a farm or unique heirloom in a Family Trust. One concern is that assets might be threatened (or lost completely) if the younger generation with the benefit of family assets gets married, and undergoes an acrimonious divorce. Pre-nuptial or pre-marital agreements are only relevant when agreed ahead of a marriage or a civil partnership. They are not for cohabiting couples who are not planning to tie the knot (but intend to live together). In this situation a cohabitation agreement would be appropriate instead. Courts have decided that pre-nuptial agreements are not automatically binding. The Law Commission has recommended that the law be changed and successive governments have had

different priorities. Currently there is no sign of a change in the law.

Are pre-nups worth doing? Yes. If the couple wants to protect existing assets, or assets which might be inherited or given to them. Each party must be separately represented by a family law solicitor with experience in this field. The individuals must make full and frank disclosure of all assets — which is often when the family accountant, financial adviser or family members help with clarifying assets. The agreement must be completed at least 21 days before the ceremony to avoid allegations of undue pressure. These prerequisites are vital. If they are not followed, the court will not uphold the agreement if tested during a divorce. Based on a divorce rate of 42% for first marriages, it makes sense to consider having this conversation, especially if children are in the picture, or there is an imbalance of wealth or inheritance prospects. What if you have already had the ceremony? While it is too late for a pre-nup, you could consider a postnuptial agreement. The latter is hard to negotiate as each person has rights and

obligations under family law. A post-nup can assist if a pre-nup agreement was being planned and time ran away with the couple.

What about cohabiting couples? During lockdown some parents injected vast sums of money into their children’s home so they could move from cities. Quite naturally parents wanted to protect their investment via a cohabitation agreement signed by their child and the live-in partner. Courts favour these agreements which do not have the negative PR that a pre-nup does! If you are interested in having a conversation about your options, please ask Elizabeth and the friendly team at HM Legal for advice: hello@hm-legal.co.uk www.hm-legal.co.uk

Whilst a cocktail containing egg white and olive oil may not immediately take your fancy, this drink is a labour of love; the egg white and olive oil are firstly shaken together for at least a minute until they emulsify which gives the drink a silky, full-bodied mouth-feel. Combined with the Limoncello, gin and vanilla it’s reminiscent of an alcoholic lemon meringue pie.

Where do you look to find new trends and inspirations to develop new cocktails? I keep an eye on food trends; they change so rapidly and constantly introduce new approaches and ways of using flavour. I’ll watch the emerging trends and then work to create drinks that pair with them. When creating a new menu for one of our restaurants that’s centred around a particular cuisine, I’ll find the best ingredients from the country and explore the regions they come from; looking for flavours and spirits/liqueurs from the same area to form the basis of the drink. What do you order in a bar when you have a rare night off? I’m a man of two extremes, some days it’s a pint of lager, other’s it’s a vodka martini with a twist. Could you name an underrated cocktail? The Americano - it’s refreshing enough to sip in summer and warming enough to be enjoyed in winter. It often gets ignored because Campari is such an acquired taste, but once mixed with vermouth and soda the bitterness is balanced and lengthened beautifully. What tips would you give our readers for a signature cocktail to serve friends at a dinner party? I have three top tips; • Firstly, take a look at Difford’s Guide - it’s the go to for any cocktail recipe • Invest in good ice - you want good quality, dry cubes, not the cheap supermarket bags as they will dilute your drink too quickly • And finally, if it’s a real party, add a little extra alcohol to any spec! www.bacinorestaurants.com 59

COMYN BRUCE C ATERING Comyn Bruce have been catering for Shropshire and Cheshire’s elite clientele since 2017, with a keen eye for detail and quality. As bespoke luxury caterers, their offering is vast yet they maintain exclusivity with only two events a week - and they book up quickly! We catch up with Georgia Bruce the Owner and Founder to see what they can really offer their foodie clients that sets them apart from the rest. Can you talk us through the initial conversations you have with a couples about their big day? It all starts with the baseline logistics. Is the wedding in a venue or a marquee? What is the date? The guest numbers? What style of dining they want to opt for – whether that be sharing or plated? We go through how many courses they’d like to serve, the vibe that the day will take and so much more. From there, we get into the exciting stuff! How do you help guide them to create their perfect menu? When creating a menu for a couple, we work with them rather than for them. Asking questions that prompt our clients to really think about what they love to eat, where they have been to dine that holds a special

place in their heart and if they want to share that memory with their guests. We use their ideas and refine them, sometimes scaling up and sometimes crafting tricky dishes into those that we can execute perfectly for large guest numbers. I find that keeping expectations in check is the best thing we can do for a couple – we can produce some incredible dishes but saying no to logistical impossibilities is a big part of how we guide our couples during the menu process. What further support do you offer before the big day? Most caterers just take care of the food; however, we provide quite a lot more support than that. We often help our couples design their tablescape, tapping into our wide network of suppliers to hire in beautiful and unusual tableware which works perfectly for their vision. Equally, we assist with other supplier contacts, putting couples in touch with fabulous bar companies, stylists, coordinators and so much more. It’s important to me that we become friends with our couples, we are such an important part of such a special day that I never want it to feel purely like a transaction, but that we are valued friends.

What are current wedding food trends? We’re seeing a real resurgence of the sharing style menu at the moment. The other thing that we are loving is extended canapé service in place of a seated starter. This allows the guests extra time to mingle and chat, because you so often miss speaking with people when you’re seated for two hours plus. It also means extra delicious canapés. We’ve seen increasing popularity with vegetarian weddings too, which is a refreshing challenge that we’ve risen to on a few occasions this season. Can you share any special memories from a client’s wedding? There are so many! We are lucky enough to work on some breathtaking weddings. Standout moments include a wedding ceremony in a marquee built 6 metres into the sky so that the couple wed against a background of the tree canopy, a wedding with two sites set against Harlech Castle with the sea within a stone’s throw and spectacular three day celebrations with different guests for each day of the wedding weekend. www.comyn-bruce.com

T he Tra Tr a vel Insid Insi d er This month Phil Aird-Mash, Aird-Mash, CEO of ITC Travel Group looks at the importance of a perfectly tailored honeymoon

T

here’s no doubt that a honeymoon needs to be unforgettable. More than a holiday, this escape should be perfectly tailored to just the two of you. And, as no two couples are the same, neither should two honeymoons be. This is why it’s so important to find a travel expert who understands you. A package honeymoon that tries to be one-size-fits all could easily miss out the things that are most important to you. Maybe your idea of romance is a candle-lit dinner – but, it might also be an adventure through the wilderness, an off-grid hideaway or glamourous city-scraper cocktails. I’m proud to say that our Travel Specialists across the ITC group know how valuable it is to really get to know every one of our clients. This way, we can create the most personalised, bespoke honeymoon that really does go way above and beyond. Whether it’s QUALIA, HAMILTON ISLAND, GREAT BARRIER REEF, AUSTRALIA

a luxury getaway, an adventure through stunning landscapes – or something else entirely – we take the time to add all the touches that make it totally unique to you. So, where to go? The Maldives is a first choice for many honeymooners. Inspiring Travel are experts in tailoring luxury holidays, so our Travel Specialists know how to pull out all the stops. From desert island picnics to sunset dolphin cruises and overwater spa treatments, it’s romance at its most indulgent. But, for me, I love the idea of an adventurous honeymoon. From the vibrant jungles of Thailand to the magnificent Great Barrier Reef, you can explore the world together in style. Or, with our wildlife specialists at Rainbow, you can delve deeper into some of the world’s most beautiful sights. Whether you wander the rainforests of Madagascar, spot gorillas in Rwanda or discover the beaches of Belize, don’t settle for anything less than your idea of perfection. www.inspiringtravel.co.uk,

I N TH T H E C IT ITY Y Craig Hough enjoyed a stay at one of Manchester’s newest boutique hotels, LEVEN, in the heart of the Village neighbourhood

L

EVEN is a new lifestyle hotel concept and is a joint venture between industry innovators Wellbrook Hospitality, and entrepreneurs Joshua and Ben Senior’s investment vehicle Branco Capital. Following an extensive interior and exterior reimagining, the 33,000 sq ft former cotton warehouse and brewery is now a design-led, 42-key hotel.

LOCATION

Located in a landmark early 20th century red brick building on the corner of Chorlton and Canal Street, LEVEN opened its doors to guests in November 2021. With only a five minute walk to Piccadilly train station, the hotel is in the perfect spot to base yourself for a Manchester stay.

FOOD & DRINK

On the ground floor of the hotel is the Lobby and Lounge which serves up coffee and cocktails and an all-day snacking menu, designed to be day-to-night sociable spaces for guests and locals alike. Staff commented that phase two of LEVEN Manchester’s launch will see a cocktail bar and restaurant space open on the ground and basement levels.

GUEST ROOMS

The hotel is made up of a selection of rooms, suites and duplex penthouses, all individually designed with sleek interiors and industrial elements.

We stayed in the two-bedroom duplex penthouse suite that offered bespoke furniture, oak parquet floors and high ceilings that gave the suite a New York loft feel. The kitchen was fully equipped with dishwasher and washing machine, offering a home from home setting for guests who may be enjoying a longer stay in the city. The sitting room boasted a large shape sofa, which was perfect for entertaining guests. Both bedrooms were roomy, with complimentary limited edition LEVEN socks laid on the bed to increase the comfort levels of the stay. With a freestanding bath and walk-in shower and Grown Alchemist products (which were available to purchase at reception) in each en suite, getting ready took far longer than usual. The balcony ran along the outside of the sitting room and kitchen, overlooking Canal Street, creating the ideal spot to enjoy a glass of something fizzy as the sun goes down.

PERSONAL NOTE

Bursting with character, this chic new offering from Manchester provides everything you need for a stay in the city. From families to friendship groups exploring the restaurants and shops, the hotel caters to all. For Manchester residents, I’d fully recommend the Lounge area for a coffee or cocktail when you are next in town. Nightly rates at LEVEN Manchester start from £89 in a “Life Size” room, and from £299 in a “Living The Dream” two-bedroom duplex Penthouse suite. www.liveleven.com 75

Kathryn Otto and her partner enjoyed a romantic break at Portrait Roma, set in Rome’s most exclusive shopping district

73

D

esigned to bring more dolce to the lives of guests, the Portrait Roma commemorates the artistic past and life of Salvatore Ferragamo. Located throughout the upper floors of the townhouse directly above the Salvatore Ferragamo Men’s Store on Via Condotti, the hotel offers a unique style of bespoke hospitality, intimacy and privacy, with just 14 luxury suites. Guests arrive through an elegant and discreet wooden door and the reception area is located on the mezzanine floor. Photographs of film and fashion celebrities line the walls and views of the city and striking urban architecture greet guests at every turn. Personalised butler service is available and caters to each guest, providing them with white glove service and offerings such as private shopping excursions or visits to historic Roman sites. The hotel terrace features an impressive open fireplace in a striking windowed wall surrounded by contemporary furnishings. The hotel’s 360-degree rooftop lounge is similarly inviting, with wooden furnishings and lush plants, creating a nice spot for cocktails before breathtaking city views of the Spanish Steps, Trinita dei Monti and more. The rooftop is one of the highest points on Via Condotti. Interior design by Architect Michele Bönan uses marble and wood in unconventional manners such as boar skin coverings on special tables with incorporated lamps; furniture fabrics inspired by the art of tailoring; and curtain linings that could be mistaken for silk scarves. Like Bönan’s design, furnishings throughout are sleek and contemporary. As with all Lungarno Collection, sophistication is accented with dashes of colour, including cream, pale grey, cyclamen, acid green and warmer wood and leather tones.

78

The The CHESHIRE Magazine | Regulars

Guest Rooms Portrait Roma has 14 guest accommodations, many marked by expansive living spaces and all with bar-kitchenettes including a refrigerator, microwave oven, espresso/cappuccino machine and dishwasher. In-room technologies were selected with the needs of contemporary travellers. Spacious marble bathrooms have large shower cabins with nickel taps and fittings. Several accommodations have private terraces or balconies, while two suites are outfitted with a sauna and fitness corner.

Our Visit With this being a weekend break we decided to fly from Liverpool John Lennon Airport. From parking in their fast-track car park, it took us less than ten minutes to check-in and enter the lounge for a pre-flight drink which was such a perfect way to start our trip. After a night’s sleep at an airport hotel due to our flight landing late, we headed over to Portrait Roma Hotel. Our taxi driver explained the hotel was close to the Spanish Steps which is always busy at weekends so dropped us off at a quaint square nearby, where we easily walked across to the hotel, avoiding the touristfilled streets. This was a lovely way to take in the beauty of the city. We were swiftly checked in with there being only 14 suites in the hotel, you feel that Portrait Roma is more of a luxury home where you are staying with friends rather than a hotel. We were shown to our room which was airy and bright with all amenities you could need including

a small kitchenette, dressing room and large shower room. After unpacking, we enjoyed lunch on the roof terrace which included a small selection of sandwiches and pizza which was perfect for us. The views were spectacular, looking out across the city with the Spanish Steps in front of us. This was by far our favourite space in Portrait Roma, it is only open to residents of the hotel so never gets too busy. We visited again that evening to watch the sunset which will be a moment we will never forget. Having selected what we wanted the evening before on the iPad that was given to us at check-in, breakfast was also served and enjoyed on the roof terrace. We both agreed that breakfast was probably the most pleasant experience we have had in all the hotels we have visited. The presentation of food coupled with the warmth from the team, ensures you have everything you need but also gives you enough space to wake up and take in the surroundings. After a morning of shopping (Rome has every shop you can think of), we decided to go and take in the sights. Rome is a city like no other, steeped in history, with streets lined with luxury designer stores with unique boutique shops in between. This together with the exceptional food the city has to offer made this a perfect weekend for us.

Personal Note Rome was on our bucket list for a while and we are glad that we chose Portrait Roma as our place to stay. The hotel is more of an exclusive members club that you feel very lucky to be a part of, they really do know how to treat their guests to ensure they will return and we will for sure. www.lungarnocollection.com 79

Location Perched on top of a hill in an idyllic location, this is truly the best way to appreciate all the best things we have to offer within the UK and enjoy our very own English Riviera. Located in Babbacome near Torquay - the birthplace of Agatha Christie- Cary Arms is the perfect setting. Having stayed here, you can see where she got the inspiration for her novels, as the area offers that mysterious charm and beauty that plays with your senses. It’s often hard to find a place you can take your four-legged member of the family, but at this coastal gem, they are considered an equal guest. With water bowls onsite, staff offering homemade treats and most importantly the best coastal walks and places to let your little furry friend run wild, this is the perfect retreat for the whole family.

Guest Rooms When you arrive in Babbacome you drive down the spine-chilling steep hill that leads you to the doors of Cary Arms. We were met and welcomed by the friendly staff; the warm service was one of the things that really stood out about this hotel. Cary Arms has 8 sea facing rooms and 2 rental cottages that give variety and charm to suit all your requirements. For our stay, we enjoyed one of the 8 beach huts that was dog friendly, set in the middle of the resort. After having our luggage taken to the room and the car valet parked, we were given a tour of the resort. You can sense that the staff are long standing and welcome each guest into Cary Arms as part of the family. No matter what time of year you visit you won’t be disappointed with the views. Our beach hut was over two levels with a private terrace, walk in shower, welcome decanter of locally made sloe gin and chilled white wine. The little touches hotels make

stand out from the chains as you feel they care about guests and our dogs. When you turn on the Sonos System and listen to the hotel's choice of Gregory Porter classics, it’s the perfect soundtrack whilst you take in the view.

Culinary Delights Dining is relaxed and cosy in the inn and as we stayed over two nights, we had the opportunity to enjoy both lunch and dinner. It always makes a difference when you know the produce is fresh and locally produced. You can choose from mouth-watering starters like Crayfish Cocktail, Smoked Duck breast or go for the pan seared Bixham Scallops, which we enjoyed. For mains there is a changing menu through lunch and dinner that has everything you would expect, from Steak and Ale Pie to West Country Fillet Steak. You are left feeling you can’t

The ultimate finishing touch to this special spot is its state of the art spa. Perched on the top of the hotel carved into the hill is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Surrounded by glass and on the top level shared with two of the beach huts, you get a true glimpse of why the views are called the Jurassic Coast. You can pre book to use the steam and whirlpool facilities and the hotel offers 2 bespoke treatments that are a must if you want to unwind after a long day walking or exploring the coast. We tried the Gaia Hot stone treatment that was a unique blend of GAIA oils and warm volcanic stones helped to manipulate the muscles and relieve deep tension. I was literally on cloud nine after this. My partner opted for the Gaia Jade Facial, a healing facial that with the aid of a jade crystal massaged into your face really did leave the skin feeling firmer and rejuvenated. We really could have stayed a whole day.

Personal Note Cary Arms is the perfect blend of nautical themed charm blended within that ever-popular gastro pub environment that we all love so well. If you have a little furry friend and want an escape to discover the Jurassic coastline of our southern parts of the UK, we really can’t recommend Cary Arms enough. www.caryarms.co.uk 81

Combermere Abbey

Alongside being an esteemed wedding venue, Combermere Abbey is a luxury staycation destination. A gorgeous 12th century estate that exudes luxury, the abbey is home to 10 self-catering countryside cottages, as well as 2 B&B suites within the North Wing. The holiday cottages are dog-friendly so are ideal for a full family holiday. All that open green space is such a treat for doggies too. The abbey’s midweek breaks are particularly popular amongst retirees, both in the cottages and suites. The North Wing B&B suites are ideal for romantic getaways, and a favourite for romantic anniversary celebrations. One of the rooms, the Bhurtpore, has the option to become a twin bedroom, which is also ideal for friends/mother and daughter combinations wanting a relaxing break away in the countryside. The Salamanca (the larger of the two suites) boasts an impressive view over the mere, one of the UK’s largest privately owned bodies of water, from both the bedroom and the bathroom. The self-catering cottages sleep between 4-10 guests and are the ideal home from home. They are all dog-friendly and each pet gets treated to their very own ‘pooch pack’ on arrival. 9 of the cottages reside within the cottage courtyard, with the other standing alone at the entrance to the estate. This is called the Stone Lodge cottage and is perfect for a quiet retreat. Each cottage gets its own garden, ideal for private picnics and BBQs in the summer. Or perhaps you’d rather picnic down by the mere? www.combermereabbey.co.uk

since it arrived just a few years ago. Mixing lightweight performance and handling with retro style, it’s one of the definitive sports coupes on the market. But now Alpine is showcasing its electric future, fitting the A110 with a battery pack from sister company Renault’s Megane E-Tech electric family car. Mini’s latest concept car gives us a glimpse into the brand’s high-tech, highly sustainable SUV future.

W

hen you think of SUVs, the Mini brand is not the first thing that comes to mind. But now it’s flourishing under the stewardship of BMW, Mini has quietly explored the high-riding hatchback market. The Countryman has enjoyed some success, and now it’s time for a new model, with electric power and a funkier, more modern look. To give us a taste of how that will look, Mini has presented the Concept Aceman, which will eventually become the Aceman SUV. Futuristic and chunky, the Aceman is powered by an unspecified all-electric motor system, and it comes with communicative LED lights with a Union Flag graphic when the car is unlocked. But the highlight will be the new-look interior with its customisable circular OLED display. The clean cabin does away with chrome and leather trim, with an iridescent coating on the dashboard and dark green velvet velour on the steering wheel. Even the buttons are integrated under backlit textile surfaces. The whole thing is designed with sustainability in mind, with textiles dominating, but it’s spacious, too. By relocating the gear selector and parking brake, Mini has freed up space between the seats, which has been used to create a “flexible” centre console that allows customers to freely position storage compartments and the wireless smartphone charger. Land Rover may have replaced the classic Defender with a more modern alternative, but that doesn’t mean the old off-roader has been left behind. Land Rover has launched 25 exclusive expedition-inspired, V8-powered special editions. Each car has unique camouflage representing 23 locations the 4x4 has visited, as well as some hidden Land Rovers. Better still, there’s a 5.0-litre V8 engine producing around 400bhp, and there’s a choice of short-wheelbase ‘90’ body types and long-wheelbase ‘110’ models, plus five double-cab pick-ups. Naturally, there’s plenty of off-road capability, with a 50cm wading depth and an external roll bar, just in case… Land Rover Classic Defender Works V8 Trophy II, £POA, www.landrover.co.uk

PICK-UP LINES Volkswagen has released its high-tech new Amarok pick-up truck, which has made its name as one of the most premium and most capable pick-ups on the market. The new model shares much with the next-generation Ford Ranger, which would normally be its sworn enemy, but Volkswagen is promising a chunky new look and up to five turbocharged engines with power outputs ranging from 148bhp to 298bhp. Bigger and more powerful than before, the vehicle can now tackle rougher terrain, but it also has a more high-tech cabin with a digital instrument display and massive touchscreen infotainment systems. Mercedes-Benz’s most important model has been replaced, and James Fossdyke has found it as stylish and efficient as ever

S

ome products have grown to define a brand. For Levi’s, it’s the 501 denim, while for Omega it’s the Seamaster. And for Mercedes-Benz, it’s the C-Class. The nameplate has existed for almost 30 years and, like Dr Who, it has gone through numerous incarnations, but like Dr Who, it has also been a firm favourite throughout its life. But despite the success of the last version – a car that was arguably the leader in its class – the Mercedes bigwigs have decided it’s time for a change. Here’s the new model, and it’s aiming to improve in every area. Mercedes-Benz has certainly done a good job on the styling front. The old C-Class looked great when it was launched in 2014, but eight years later it feels a bit soft around the edges. The new version eliminates all of that with its sharp new look, including the angular, downturned grille and the narrowed headlights. It’s the same story at the back, where excess bulk has been trimmed away to create a sportier and more modern design. But the highlight is the interior, which is absolutely out of this world. Pictures can show you the details – the massive portrait-orientated touchscreen and the digital instrument cluster, for a kick off – but they don’t do justice to the way it all comes together so beautifully. That’s partly because it doesn’t just look classy, but it feels that way too. Every surface and switch feels solid and tactile, from the metal trim to the glossy switchgear on the extravagant six-spoke steering wheel. And that’s before you even think about the supportive, sculpted seats trimmed in soft leather, or the high-quality veneers and decorative inserts. Almost as impressive is the technology, which doesn’t just look great, but works well too. Highresolution screens in the dashboard and behind the steering wheel can be customised to your specific needs, but neither need be your primary source of information. Customers can choose a fighter jet-style head-up display, which projects all the need-to-know information – speed, sat-nav directions and all that jazz – onto the windscreen, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road for more of the time. Sometimes, however, you’ll want to look at that gorgeous touchscreen in the middle of the dash, with its sharp responses and even sharper graphics. It’s easy to use, and it comes with some stunning features, including a traffic light display. Ever stopped at the lights and found yourself craning your neck to see when the green light comes on? With the C-Class, there’s a camera to help you out, showing the

lights on the screen in the dash. No more contortionism required. And that isn’t the only helpful bit of technology. There’s also an augmented-reality navigation system, which shows you where the next turn will be on a live-action view of the road ahead. It’s really useful for finding the right exit on a complicated roundabout or spotting the turn-off on a congested city street. Better still, Mercedes-Benz has integrated some high-end technology in the engine bay, applying various forms of hybrid power to make this the most efficient C-Class yet. Gone are the noisy old 2.1-litre diesel engines, replaced with much smoother, but smaller 2.0-litre motors. We tried one of the more powerful options, the 2.0-litre 300d with its 261bhp output, assisted by Mercedes’ EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology. That means the engine can be switched off when the car is coasting to a halt, as well as when the car is stopped. And the energy harvested from braking can then be used to help the engine out when it’s under load, reducing the amount of fuel burned. Quite frankly, the impact of that system is incredible, with even this most powerful diesel C-Class returning more than 50mpg without even trying. And the less powerful 220d version will hit well over 60mpg. For a big saloon with plenty of boot space and ample room in the back, that’s pretty impressive. But on paper, at least, there’s an even more efficient option. The 300e mixes a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a massive battery. That means the 300e can run on electrical power alone for around 70 miles, meaning shorter journeys can be undertaken without using a drop of

92

petrol. Drive carefully, charge the battery regularly, and you can achieve something approaching the three-figure fuel economy Mercedes quotes. But if you put your foot down, the system produces 328bhp, resulting in impressive acceleration. Economy and power aside, the key selling point of the C-Class has long been the ride comfort, although the handling has never quite reached the levels of the BMW 3 Series. This time around, Mercedes has attempted to rectify that by sharpening the C-Class’ chassis up. The new model feels stiffer than its predecessor, and it responds much more rapidly to steering inputs. With a smooth nine-speed automatic gearbox and rear-wheel drive, it feels very balanced and stable regardless of what you throw at it. It’s much more enjoyable than its predecessor on a good country road. The catch is it’s not as comfortable. Admittedly, our test car was fitted with some massive wheels that probably won’t help the ride very much, but the C-Class definitely felt less supple than its wafty predecessor. Still, at least the new engines are more refined than before and there’s a little less wind and road noise drifting in from outside. And once you get on a motorway, you barely notice the extra stiffness in the suspension. But while the C-Class may not be as comfortable as before, the extra technology, efficiency and style will make up for that. After all, the S Line versions of the Audi A4 aren’t especially comfortable and they still sell well – mainly because it looks good, has some great technology and it’s well built. The same goes for the C-Class now, and that’s better to drive than the Audi. The BMW 3 Series might still set the standard for driver enjoyment, but in almost every other way, the C-Class is at least a match for it. Looks like Mercedes has written yet another illustrious chapter in the C-Class story.

PAUL General Manager Every day is different and can involve anything from arranging a themed event with the on-site restaurant to completing the weekly and monthly checks to ensure that everything is working as it should across the community, supported by the Pegasus team Petrina, Matthew and Andrew. A big part of the day is catching up with homeowners, checking if they are well and if we can do anything to support them. This is my favourite part as it’s so nice to have conversations with them and discover more about their fascinating lives.

Q&A

with

GIORGIA IAZEOLLA,

FOUNDER OF STUDIO ZAGARA How would you describe yourself ? I am the founder of Studio Zagara. A nature, food and culture lover, with a passion for all things interiors and fashion. Tell us a bit more about you... I was born in Chicago and moved to Rome, where my family is from, at the age of four. In 2000, we moved to Accra, Ghana, and after three years we made the move to Miami. After a short stint in Guatemala City, I moved back to Miami and began to study fashion design and art history, which later lead me to New York City. I thought London to be a great bridge between Europe and the USA, and so attended Central Saint Martins to pursue a degree in fashion communication and promotion as storytelling has always been a passion of mine; being able to do it with fashion imagery as my medium of choice was the perfect outlet. After working in the fashion industry for a number of years, from magazines to buying to modelling agencies, I made the move to Manchester in 2018 and have been here since, where my hobby for interiors and antiquing grew evermore into a true passion and became something I wanted to share with people and do so in a way that indeed includes storytelling, but also help spread awareness of overconsumption and how it affects our environment. Who are your greatest influences? I don’t think he knows this but, my partner, Daniel Schofield, is one of my greatest influences! I can confidently say, from having watched him evolve over the years, that I’ve never met a more hardworking, honest, driven and humble individual. What have been some of your best jobs / experiences at work and why? My best job experience was opening a bar in London. It was my first real job, I was young and green and really learned a lot about the ways of life. During that period, every day felt like an adventure, anything was possible.

Traditional vs contemporary style? I really love a mix of both, elements of each! I love how cozy and at peace traditional style makes me feel, so at home, cocooned and comfortable. But, the inclusion of contemporary components adds an elegant and fun twist, an element of surprise which keeps the space interesting, never dulling. What would you consider your greatest achievement? Starting my own business. It isn’t so much the fact of actually being a business owner or an entrepreneur, whatever one may call it. For me, it’s about the whole journey of arriving to that point. What would your superpower be? My superpower would be my ability to immediately attain strengths or characteristics of any animal on the planet at any given time that we do not currently have the capacity, as humans, to embody - ie; obtaining that renowned infallible memory of an elephant, be able to swim for prolonged periods of time without the need of oxygen, to be able to fly, to run as fast as a cheetah, change my appearance and quickly take in my surroundings and like an octopus — the list is endless! www.studiozagara.com

P.S. Last book you read? Atomic Habits by James Clear. Dream buy? One of my dream buys would likely have to be my ideal plot of land on which to build the property of my dreams, to truly materialise everything I’ve ever wanted of a home, to really make it my own. 99
