My life ... JULIE PERRY , MANAGING DIRECTOR AT JULIE PERRY EVENTS

How would you describe yourself ? Straight-talking, loyal and hardworking with a dry sense of humour. Where is home? And work? Home is Bury, where I have lived for 20 years and work is in a beautiful farmhouse in Lymm, Cheshire. What did you want to be when you were younger? I wanted to work for an airline because I liked the uniform and in the entertainment industry looking after bands, both of which I ended up doing. Name a few of your favourite places to be... Barbados, I absolutely love, it’s my favourite place ever! I love the culture and the people, who are so friendly. I also love Majorca, which is a beautiful place with so many interesting places to visit. One of my favourites being Deia, which is breathtaking. I also love the South of France, such as Eze and St Tropez, my favourite restaurants there are L’opera and Baoli and La Guérite in Cannes. What or who inspires you? In business, I admire hardworking, humble people who are generous and caring and who look after others. People who support each other and lift each other up.

I once did a bungee jump from the roof of a famous hotel in Manchester to raise money for a children’s charity.

What was the most extravagant request from a client? To gift wrap an entire house as a surprise for our client’s parents.

Which event that you’ve worked on are you most proud of ? We are currently working with a client who works tirelessly to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for children’s charities each year, and we are very honoured to be part of this. What was the last gift that you gave someone? The last gifts I gave were personalised jewellery for my team for all their hard work in producing some incredible events this summer. Tell us a secret/fun fact? I once did a bungee jump from the roof of a famous hotel in Manchester to raise money for a children’s charity. Who or what would you place in room 101? Bad manners and lycra chair covers. Your mastermind subject? Definitely music, I love everything about it, and always win a pop quiz! What’s been your biggest life lesson? Be careful who you trust and tell your problems to. Not everyone who smiles at you is your friend. julieperryevents.com

The The Import mporta a nce of Tim imee T

o set a trend you need to know the classics and how to awaken their charisma with new interpretations and combinations. All the disciplines that express the value of time are confronted with the ability to evolve at every cycle in a refined way: a wine blend that carefully changes yet maintains its identity a painting that lends an original allure to primary colors a new pairing that updates familiar and natural flavours. In this spirit based on a careful study of codes and alert sensitivity to contemporary influences the Brunello Cucinelli Autumn Winter 2023 Collection was designed with a full focus on the importance of time: the time for experience that cultivates knowledge the time for artisanal creation the time in which every garment will have the opportunity to renew itself with combinations that enhance its inherent qualities. Just like a classic that thanks to strong roots can take on new and richer meanings day after day. Every look is characterised by a key garment that is its focal point that expresses the overall style but at the same time is defined by the harmony of combinations. A tailored cashmere coat a special hand-knit sweater or a suit made of a precious fabric can constitute this focus of attention which is then balanced in a contemporary way by overlays trousers and accessories. All the elements are always organized based on a search for balance between references proportions and style. A selection of the finest fabrics characterised by special textures and micro-effects such as Donegal chevron and broken twill weave epitomizes the quest for a new value through classic materials.

Colours take on intense hues inspired by historic wine blends that have stood the test of time transcending trends. Shades of red – barbera maroon and burgundy – are presented in a greyish version to convey in a palpable way the passing of time a long ageing process that enhances the finest and most subtle nuances. The overall harmony is created by precious tones of beige moving from medium camel and sand to light panama and ecru accompanied by fascinating shades of noble deep blue and modern light blue. Urban hues of grey complement the backdrop with the brand’s distinctive colours. The suit confirms its role as a cornerstone of the collection: contemporary comfortable and now more versatile than ever thanks to fabrics that allow wearers to convert the style of a jacket by matching it with different trousers. Outerwear pieces enhance their distinctive features depending on their intended purpose: elegant coats maximize their exclusive sartorial feel while parka and down jackets highlight their dynamic and contemporary flair. The winter knitwear collection was broadened to make it as comprehensive as possible providing the perfect choice for any occasion and representing the evolution of the entire season. From lightweight sweaters perfectly matched with the tailored lines of blazers to cardigans made of precious cozy yarns with an outdoor feel. Noble fibers of cashmere virgin wool and silk are accompanied by the soft shaded effect of alpaca. The fascination of traditional stitches is enhanced by new proportions and combinations as well as by colors in order to create “timeless knitwear” that elevates the coordinates of form matter and colour. New hand-knit creations of extremely high quality complement the offer with an exclusive touch. brunellocucinelli.com

ASK THE EXPERT VICTORIA MORGAN - THE GLOW COACH, HOW TO GET THAT ALL-IMPORTANT BRIDAL GLOW, NATURALLY Nourish your Mind How you feel on your special day and going into married life, should be as important as how you’ll look - I’ve seen too many brides forget about cultivating a sense of positivity and wellness from within, only to look great but not feel completely confident or comfortable on the big day. Doing this inner work is important and what this looks like is different for everybody, depending on preferences, lifestyle and individual health goals. It could be practising yoga or meditation, taking mindful walks outside, or creating a morning routine that includes some physical movement, journaling, affirmations or visualisations to boost positivity, build resilience and confidence. Nourish your Body When it comes to pre-wedding nutrition for glowing skin, hair and nails, it's key to focus on a mostly whole-foods diet, with a good balance of macronutrients (proteins, healthy fats and wholegrains). Add in lots of colourful, fresh foods 'Eat the rainbow' as they say because our body's love getting a wide variety of nutrients. Also, remember that keeping your hydration levels topped up daily is important for that glow from within. Nourish your Skin All brides desire that natural glow and to wake up on their wedding day with a clear, bright, radiant complexion. Establish a strong bespoke AM and PM skincare routine that suits your skin type and concerns, supports the skin's microbiome and will nourish the deeper dermis layer of the skin. Your morning routine is important to prepare and protect the skin for the day ahead, then your evening routine is for cleansing and regenerating the skin, it's important to cleanse the day off and apply nourishing serums and oil-based products that penetrate

the dermis layer, sinking in to work overnight when our skin is busy renewing itself. My new GLOW Beauty Drops nourishing facial oil is perfect as it's a blend of 11 organic certified oils and extracts, for a vitamin and nutrient boost, plus instant radiance. Prioritise You It’s so easy to get lost in the wedding planning process and feel overwhelmed. Try not to let others control how you feel or make decisions for you. Ensure that you’re making plenty of time for you and your self-care, such as getting early nights and plenty of beauty sleep, taking hot baths or doing at-home facials, cooking nourishing meals and taking time to switch off from wedding planning and life in general. Set Small Goals Avoid leaving your health plans, wellness goals, skincare routines etc until a few weeks before the wedding. Ideally, give yourself a minimum of 6 months and set small achievable goals to work towards - break them down and keep going. Seek support or an accountability partner if needed to keep you motivated and on track. Consider seeing a health expert or Bridal Wellness Coach There is so much confusing and conflicting wellness information out there, so together with a holistic Health Coach you can devise a personal wellness plan that's bespoke to you, your goals and lifestyle but also to ensure you're supported and guided throughout and that you have an accountability partner to keep you feeling empowered and motivated. From expert nutrition support to working out a regular self-care plan, to boosting your emotional health, there are many reasons why you might want to seek professional support and invest in your health and well-being for the long term, so you glow for that special day as a beautiful, confident, radiant bride and long after! The GLOW Coach offers bespoke nutrition and lifestyle plans for women and brides-to-be, through private online coaching sessions

Getting Personal with Chris Ingram

C

hris Ingram, 28 is the first British Rally Driver in 52 years to become FIA, European Rally Champion. I had the pleasure of sitting down with him to discuss all aspects of his career, including the toll it had on his mental health. Born and raised in Manchester, Chris is incredibly motivated and committed towards one goal; FIA world champion, The first in his family to forge a career in Rally Driving, Chris in 2019, supported by a crowdfunding campaign defied the odds to become FIA rally champion. Wildly renowned as the toughest racing challenge on the planet, Chris is more determined than ever to become world champion, with the skill, attitude and grit to make his dreams a reality. Here’s a little more about the man behind the dream: Chris, can you tell me where this all began? What was your dream job when you were younger and who encouraged you to take up rallying? My dream was to play football! But then my dad took me to watch Rally Yorkshire when I was ten and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. My Dad used to do a lot of rallying for fun which was a very expensive hobby! I loved following him around the country and watching him become really successful in the UK National Championships.

Aged 15 you made your debut rallying in the F1000 British Junior Rally Championships in 2010 where you finished second and went on to be champion in 2011. But driving isn’t that hard really, is it? I mean you only sit there and turn a wheel! Everyone thinks that you are quite literally just driving a car like we do every day to the shops or wherever, but rallying is so much more physically and mentally demanding. We compete for 3 to 4 days, any slight lapse in concentration could mean disaster. You push everything to the absolute limit every split second. What does the race scheduling look like? My day starts at 6am and I can still be in the car at 10pm for 3 days. In contrast, a Formula 1 race is about an hour, but we are getting thrown around for up 16 hours a day. How important is mental and physical preparation before a race? Have you found a routine that works for you? It’s everything really. You’ve got to be confident, relaxed and as focused as possible to perform at your best.

44

For me, I’m always battling with myself. If I was completely confident and relaxed, I would win every time. So getting myself into the right mindset is crucial. Is there a mental barrier to break through on a race weekend? Do you ever feel like your head isn’t in the right place? What do you do to get it to where you want it to be? It’s an insanely competitive environment, you’re under 100 times more pressure and really learn a lot about yourself during a race. There is nothing that can really prepare you for competition as much as doing it. You build resilience, and every time I get the chance to compete, I continually learn so much about myself that I wouldn’t on a normal day. I don’t think you can ever totally prepare; you have to adapt to whatever is thrown at you. I believe in my driving ability; I wouldn’t have got this far if I didn’t have that massive self-belief in my talent or skill. I go into every race “full attack”, regardless of how dangerous the conditions are. I need to deliver my best performance every time for the sponsors, my team and the people that have supported me for so long. At the end of every race, I always feel like I have done everything I can. As was the case in most sports, the pandemic took a huge toll on the rallying world, how did it affect your career? I won the European Championship before Covid, the first British and youngest ever Champion in over 50 years. And then Covid happened. I lost everything. Everyone was pulling out of partnerships and sponsorships in the UK. Which pretty much put me back to square one despite being

European Champion. All my rivals continued their careers, and I was sat on the sidelines for almost 2 years. I went on to really struggle with my mental health. Since then, I have been fighting to get a chance to do a full season in the World Championship. Was this your first experience of a downward trajectory in your mental health, or is it something you have experienced before? Looking back, I can see glimpses of mental health struggles when I was younger but didn’t realise it at the time. Prior to the pandemic, my career was going where I wanted it to. Whilst there have always been lots of ups and downs, Covid is when it got really bad. When everything stopped, it felt like my identity was taken away from me. The title of being a Rally Champion was gone, and I was left with nothing. I was depressed, trapped and had no defence against it. My mind was taken over by negative thoughts, it was relentless. I was just spiralling. I didn’t know how to deal with it, and I was losing the fight with it for probably a year. I lost so much weight, I was skin and bones because I was so ill. The worst thing I did, was not talk to anyone for a long time. It is really common for men in society to try and be brave and strong, and not show any weakness. When in fact, the strongest thing is actually to be open and vulnerable and ask for help. At the time, I was still clinging on to being ok. I was at rock bottom and lost all motivation, I didn’t train or want to get out of bed, enduring dark thoughts all the time. I could feel my mind was losing sanity which was when I realised and finally reached out for help 45

Wellness | The CHESHIRE Magazine

It sounds really tough; I am so proud/relieved you have come through it. When do you realise you were in a good place again? I managed to get sponsorship and a rally programme back together, but even at the start of that it was really challenging because I hadn’t competed for so long, it was like starting again. Just keeping going and never giving up meant I started to have amazing days again. I went from the amazing high of winning the championship and being with Lewis Hamilton to nothing. I feel huge compassion for others, because most people haven’t been through it and probably think it’s a bit weird. But I really understand that dark place. Everyone suffers at some point in their life. I have had people who didn’t get it when I was struggling, to fall into it themselves now. What do you do now to make sure you never go back to such a dark place again? I think from being that low to having to fight my way back up, I have built so much resilience and strength that I don’t think I will get that bad again. I look after myself every day. I eat well and I catch myself if I am having negative thoughts, I am always trying to stay one step ahead and improve myself. This is a really good mindset to have, one maybe I would have never had if I hadn’t gone through all this, after all, everything happens for a reason. I’ve never spoken to a man who is so passionate and driven in their career. You’re absolutely on it! So are you! When I first joined CPASE, my confidence was still so low, I can’t tell you how inspiring and motivating it was as a place to train and more importantly to recover for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and Cryotherapy. I see you training in the gym with Scott Quigg a former undefeated British boxing champion,

IMAGES: TOM PITFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY

to Rick Moylan (who came highly recommended). I got a personal trainer and started training a few times a week. I didn’t share how I was feeling with my family, I ended up pulling myself out of it eventually. I confided in Rick and got a therapist as well, just to talk to someone. I had never talked about “real” things and that was the start of the journey to healing.

does this help with your mindset and health goals? I met Scott in 2021 who has helped me a lot. He really helped with my training and got me into boxing. It helped me build back up confidence, he is so positive and determined. His mindset is like a rock, we are totally opposite. I am quite a sensitive person and very open, whereas Scott isn’t unless you know him really well. I have learnt a lot from him. It’s so good to have a mentor, he was a world champion in his sport, so to see how he succeeded has been really amazing. We have to ask, given the speed you drive on the course/track - how many points do you have on your driving license? None! I’ve never had a ticket in the UK, but I have had one in almost every other country in Europe. I drive so slowly on the roads that my girlfriend asks me to drive faster! Finally, is there anyone you would like to thank? I would like to take the opportunity to thank my sponsors CPASE, WS Transportation, Car Finance 247, Maverick Stars, Stars Trust, JV Pastor Group Monaco for all their support. I am looking for a title partner for the World Rally Championship that starts in January. I am now performing better than ever, and I am on the cusp of a big break in the World Championship so please get in touch if you want to back the winner! Follow my journey here @chrisingramrally

The Neuroscience of Dating WORDS: Alex Mellor-Brook, Dating and Relationship Coach, Co-founder at Select Personal Introductions

L

ove - it’s a primitive thing. Neuroscience has taught us a lot about love - for example when we look at a picture of someone we love, our ventral tegmental area lights up. If you aren’t familiar with it, this ancient part of the brain induces pleasure, focuses attention and creates motivation to gain rewards. So love - it’s been around as long as we’ve had brains. When we’re love-struck certain chemicals course through the brain like a tidal wave. It starts with cortisol, the stress hormone, which can cause those early signs of love, shortness of breath, confusion, weak knees etc. And as cortisol rises, serotonin drops - which creates intrusive thoughts, obsession, and fear. That thing where you just can’t get somebody out of your mind? That’s largely caused by serotonin depletion. But there’s more. When we get ‘struck’ by infatuation, we also get a huge dopamine release. This chemical feeds the reward system and gives us a hit as powerful as alcohol - so drowning our sorrows after a bad date might actually be driven by our chemical neurotransmitters, as much as our feelings. If that’s how we fall in love, what keeps us there? It’s more chemicals.

Attachment styles, love and neuroscience If that idea turns you off, keep listening. Love is a many splendoured - and many faceted - thing, but it’s also a construct and part of that construct is chemical. As we move from the early jitters of a crush into deeper romantic love, more chemical compounds join the mix. The hormones oxytocin and vasopressin are released into the brain through skin-to-skin contact (and, of course, sex). Oxytocin increases feelings of attachment and is best known as part of the mother-baby attachment process, while vasopressin is connected to the behaviours that promote long-term relationships and monogamy. In many people, as dopamine and cortisol decline, oxytocin and vasopressin increase, moving us from the hectic excitement of passion/fear to the calmer responses of loyalty/bonding. A 2011 study showed that a proportion of people who claim to be ‘crazy for each other’ after decades are telling the truth. Put into an MRI scanner, their brains light up; those primitive brain centres still glow with dopamine. So what about attachment styles? Well, they’re a big deal in dating #attachmentstyle has more than 430 million views on TikTok because we seem to have an innate ability to recognise a person’s attachment style from the first meeting. Those four styles, secure, avoidant, anxious and disorganised relate to our earliest relationships with parents and caregivers and are based, in part, on the role of those chemicals we’ve already covered, that activate the primitive brain centres. People who didn’t bond well as infants are likely to be avoidant or anxious, those

who had great early relationships are prone to security while the disorganised person shows combinations of one or more of the other styles. But the good news is that attachment styles aren’t fixed. They tend to change as we age, and we can also improve our attachment style by: • Taking measurable risks to reduce our fear • Journaling to identify our emotions and manage them better • Spending time doing things we’re good at. Love might be partly chemical, but we can change the chemicals, by changing our behaviours and that lets us change the way we relate to potential partners. www.selectservices.co.uk

Game-Ch ame-Cha ange ngerrs: 3 Trends fro fr om

f you’re running a business, chances are, you’re riding multiple waves of change. While this sounds like a cliché let’s pause and consider … post-covid, rising costs, preparing for Net Zero … and let’s face it, for those aiming for growth and success – keeping on top of ongoing legal matters can be a bit of a maze. Fortunately, when you have a team of lawyers you can rely on, they can act as your compass.

Trend 1: ‘Green’ is the New Black What could be more stylish than tailored suits, smart EVs and luxury watches? Your business’s ethical vision. It’s time to put your money where your values are. A NielsenIQ study showed 61% of UK consumers feel sustainability is more important to them than it was two years ago. Richard, Commercial Director: “Businesses that embrace ‘green’ practices, champion social causes and have an independent accreditation to support their vision are more likely to see a dynamic transformation. Customers are lining up to support brands that stand for something more than just profits.”

Trend 2: Contract Confidence Handshakes are lovely, but when it comes to business, let’s get it in writing. Contracts are your safety net in a sea

of uncertainty. HM3 Legal’s lawyers advise creating crystal-clear agreements that outline expectations, responsibilities, and dispute resolution pathways. Lindsey, MD says: “It’s not about expecting the worst; it’s about laying a solid foundation for smooth sailing. Our team advises business owners and founders regarding complex and nuanced contracts, so their business is better protected and ‘future-fit’.”

Trend 3: Brand Protection Your brand is more than a logo; it’s your entire identity and uniqueness that separates you from the competition. Trademarks and copyrights might sound intimidating, but they’re your guardian angels. They give you exclusive rights to your creations and prevent copycats from muscling in. Caroline, Partner summarises: “Any time is a good time to look at the power of your intellectual property. Our lawyers recommend safeguarding your IP early on, so you can confidently build your brand’s legacy. If you’re running a mature and established company, protect your originality – an idea, a process, a creation.”

LEADERS FROM HM3 LEGAL: RICHARD BURNETT, LINDSEY KIDD, CAROLINE JONES

Three leaders from HM3 Legal in Chester share their insight on business trends they are currently seeing

You’re Not Alone Statistics reveal that many UK SMEs that embrace these three trends experience not only legal peace of mind but also enhanced credibility. So, don’t shy away from legal talk; it’s a crucial ingredient in your recipe for success. These trends aren’t checkboxes; they’re keys to unlocking smoother operations, resilience, and longerlasting success. As change seems to be accelerating, talk to a commercial lawyer to keep your legal compass pointed in the right direction. Ready to catch those waves of opportunity? SAM

GRAINGER Chef Patron at Belzan & Madre in Liverpool What dish on your menu would you recommend? At Belzan the Guinness rarebit potatoes, they have been on the menu for over 2 years and are a big, big favourite. They are Pomme Anna potatoes with a rich Guinness rabbit topping and topped with a Bois Bourdan dressing. What is your most popular dish? At Madre, the most popular dish is the Pollo Asado chicken tacos, which is a marinade of chilli, garlic, lime and achiote then grilled over coals, served in soft corn tortillas with white cabbage, chipotle mayonnaise and onions and coriander. What’s your first food related memory? My first was cooking with my Grandad at a really young age. He was from the West Indies, so I was learning to cook soups, curries and stews. It’s what began my love for cooking and flavours. When did you know you wanted to be a chef? I started in kitchens aged 13 as a KP and used to watch the chefs thinking they were unbelievable. It started my love for cooking; I used to practice in their kitchen once they had gone home. Describe your style in three words Creative, flavour-driven, challenging. What’s your favourite dish to create? My Mum’s tuna pasta bake, it brings out the best memories of being a child.

Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? Places I’ve been and people I’ve met along the way. What four ingredients are necessary in your kitchen? Salt, butter, soy and garlic. If you could prepare a meal for anyone, who would it be and what would you make? My grandad and I would make his beef stew. It’s the first thing I learned to cook and holds a special place. What are you most proud of in your career? The opening of my first restaurant Belzan, it had always been my dream. Are there any foods you just don’t like? Olives, I’ve tried for years to get into them but just can’t do it. What do you think is the most challenging ingredient to work with? Marrow, it just doesn’t really taste of much! Do you do the cooking at home? Always, it’s my way to relax. I’ll put Radio 6 on and cook all day happily. What advice would you offer to an aspiring chef? Put the hours in, work harder than you have ever worked, listen to everything and push yourself. belzan.co.uk thisismadre.co.uk 61

Best for... Afternoon Tea Experience

N

iche Patisserie is a family-run business, which has put the border town of Oswestry firmly on the Shropshire foodie map for patisserie and bakery goods. Opened in 2020 it is showcased in one of the oldest grade 2 buildings in Oswestry, circa 1621 with its iconic black and white frontage – it really sets the scene for the experience ahead. The family-run business is led by pastry chef Adam Cleal who was a semi-finalist in Bake Off The Professionals 2019. Adam started his career training with renowned Michelin-starred and TV chef Michael Caines, where he learnt his craft in fine French-style patisserie. Over the course of Covid and in lockdown, Adam and his mother Sam started to bake at home for their neighbours. As restrictions lifted they then started to bake for small businesses in the local area. This massively took off and conversations then led to the birth of Niche Patisserie, now having the challenge that it was outgrowing their home kitchen they started to look at venues and fell in love with the Tudor-fronted building they are in today. Niche Patisserie offers a plethora of artisan products, famously Adams's amazing dessert-based croissants which

are made on-site in an open kitchen. These are visually stunning and would sit easily alongside any high-end French patisserie in Paris. As the business has developed, Adam has extended the take-out offerings to a number of freshly baked breads, granola and jams that are all made in-house. The business has gone from strength to strength and now Niche Patisserie offer up afternoon teas - which is why we came to visit. We were greeted by Sam and Millie and led to our table in the window with a great view of the bustling kitchen. Sam took us through what was on offer, explaining that as much as possible they use local produce – meat from Treflach Farm, clotted cream from Clotton Dairy in Cheshire and milk from Herd Farm Whittington – where you are able to get selected Niche Patisserie products in a vending machine there. We opted for an English breakfast tea from Morgan’s of Welshpool where Niche source the majority of their teas. We were then presented with the savoury items of our afternoon tea – pancetta and cheddar quiche, niche sausage roll and a selection of sandwiches inclusive of: chicken and pesto, coronation egg, honey roast ham and mustard and cucumber and cream cheese. The standout here was the homemade sausage roll – we could

have eaten so many more of these. Whilst we had a little break, the team refilled our pot of tea. Before we knew it, a beautiful classic-tiered afternoon tea stand was heading our way. It was visually stunning, with a selection of pastries and desserts fitting for a king. Homemade buttermilk scones with clotted cream and strawberry, vanilla and lemon jam made on the premises. These were still warm and the jam was being made whilst we were there in the kitchen by Adam. Highlights of the pastries were the pistachio, raspberry and white chocolate choux and also the apple macaroon which had a fresh Granny Smith tart apple flavour – to be honest, it was difficult picking a favourite as they were all fabulous. Niche Patisserie are able to tailor afternoon teas to dietary requirements in advance – vegan, gluten less and dairy free. They are also able to hold private parties for up to 50 people. We absolutely would recommend visiting, and can’t wait to come back! nichepatisserie.com 63

T

oday, there’s a growing trend to make travel accessible for every generation. As a parent, it’s incredibly rewarding to share a passion for adventure and seeing the world with your children. What’s more, the increasing popularity of tailor-made travel means that holidays can be created specifically for your family. Whether you’re travelling with a baby or looking to engage your teens, a personalised escape ensures that you really make the most of your precious time away. For me, the best family holidays involve enjoying new experiences together, so my recommendations this year are as diverse as they are far-reaching. I always suggest families embark on a bucket list safari holiday, staying at Kenya’s high-end Angama Mara safari camp to witness millions of zebras cross the famous Mara River. Or, make little dreams come true at Four Seasons Orlando at Walt Disney Resort and watch spectacular nightly firework displays together from the rooftop terrace. Alternatively, share your passion for learning about new cultures with a journey to Vietnam. Explore the

TONY KELLY, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF PORT LYMPNE HOTEL AND RESERVE

What are the benefits of your location? We are situated in a beautiful part of the UK with easy access from central London and southern England either on the rail or motorway network. We are also 10 minutes from the Channel Tunnel or 20 minutes from the ferry ports so access to mainland Europe is simple and fast. We are situated high on an escarpment overlooking Romney Marsh and the English Channel. Our views are spectacular and just add to the overall experience of feeling that you are on safari in Kent. What is the most luxurious villa to stay in? Our Lion and Tiger Lodges are our most luxurious villas with wall-to-ceiling picture windows into the enclosures enabling you to get up very close and personal to these magnificent big cats. The lodges themselves are luxuriously furnished in a contemporary African style and come with a hot Swedish outdoor bathtub, again with a picture window into the enclosures. You can sip away at award-winning locally grown sparkling wine whilst watching the big cats only a few feet from your bath.

What can you tell us about the history of the resort? The original mansion was built in the early 19th century by Phillip Sassoon and was renowned for its lavish and decadent parties. The gardens, some of which were designed by Capability Brown and the 600 acres surrounding the house became the playground for the rich and famous of that era. Notable attendees included Charlie Chaplin, Lawrence of Arabia, Grace Kelly and Winston Churchill. Now the house and ground are home to over 1,000 animals and 92 units of accommodation in 14 different styles. How would you describe your dining experience? We offer many styles of dining in our three restaurants and on-site cafes. The garden room is our all-day dining restaurant

offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a laid back unpretentious British style. Babydolls serves homemade sourdough pizzas and pasta, and Bear Lodge serves grills, burgers and a selection of family-friendly meals. Afternoon tea is served in the grand mansion and when the weather allows tea, lunch and bar snacks are served on the Mansion Terraces or in the Moroccan Courtyard. Of all the facilities the resort offers, which is your favourite? Despite the range of hospitality services on offer perhaps the Giraffe Safari, or any of our big cat or rhino experiences has to be my favourite. After all, where else in the UK can you get close to and feed these magnificent creatures in the company of experienced and passionate guides? You just have to remind yourself you are in Kent. What makes a stay at your resort stand out from your competitors? Undoubtedly the interaction with the animals. Port Lympne was the first to develop this style of resort in the UK and is at the forefront of conservation and care for the species based at our parks. As a Charitable body, the profits from our business activities are used to further our conservation goals and rewilding aims. portlympne.com 69

A Symbol of Pari sian Elegance Located in one the city’s most prestigious addresses on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Craig Hough enjoyed a stay at Le Bristol Paris

T

he first to receive France’s ‘Palace’ distinction, the hotel has 190 rooms and suites that are now completely renovated. An exceptional opulent setting, Le Bristol holds 4 Michelin stars between restaurant Epicure and 114 Faubourg. The hotel hosts captivating evenings at Le Bar du Bristol, boats a 13,000 square foot courtyard garden and has first class facilities including a wellbeing Spa Le Bristol by La Prairie and an iconic rooftop swimming pool.

History From its prime spot on chic Faubourg Saint-Honoré, since 1925 Le Bristol has served as a hub for a discerning international crowd. During World War II, the hotel served as the home of the American Embassy and it was one of a limited number of Parisian hotels that wasn’t requisitioned by the Nazi’s. In 1954, the first Pierre Cardin boutique opened at 118 rue du Faubourg Saint-

74

Honoré. Christian Lacroix, Louboutin and many others followed, and famous clients flooded through the doors of Le Bristol Paris: Konrad Adenauer, Kim Novak, Rita Hayworth and Charlie Chaplin. With its proximity to haute couture Le Bristol became a favourite home for fashion photographers. Known for it’s ‘chic refuge of discreet luxury’, Coco Chanel, her long-standing friend and lover Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dali dominated the party scene at the hotel. In 2007, Le Bristol Paris acquired the adjoining building on the avenue Matignon. In keeping with its association with high-fashion, the hotel created its now famous ‘Fashion High Teas’ and introduced sculpture exhibitions in the garden, showcasing the work of artist Diane de Württemberg. Numerous other artists followed: André, Yue Minjun, Richard Texier, Osvaldo Rodriguez, etc.

Rooms and Suites The large elegant rooms are decorated in Louis XV- and Louis XVI-era furnishings, original paintings, antique mirrors, and designer fabrics, many in the hotel’s signature pink and green hues. The plush carpets and supremely comfortable king size beds make you feel instantly at home. The ensuite bathrooms are all marble, with heated floors, a large bath and rain shower. Our room included an Eiffel Tower view, which offered the perfect backdrop for a glass of red on the balcony. The most recent refurb to take place at the hotel is the Azur Suite which is one of the most exceptional accommodations in Paris thanks to its 115 square metre tree-lined terrace. The suite has been entirely redefined to showcase the creative universe of French artist Agnès Sandahl against a backdrop of elegant interior decoration by the hotel’s owners, Narcisa and Elvira Oetker.

Food and Drink On arrival, a treat from the ‘chocolaterie’ was waiting in the room which is made in-house and available to purchase on the ground floor at Les Ateliers du Bristol. I had the opportunity for a guided tour by team member Thomas Matteï, who took me behind the scenes of the hotel and introduced me to the master chef who creates the square pieces of joy. The smell of fresh chocolate enticed the senses and I was quick to return to Les Ateliers du Bristol to purchase some more. There are two main dining options include Epicure, Le Bristol’s chandelier-clad fine dining restaurant. Executive Chef Eric Frechon holds four Michelin stars and has created a

temple of gastronomy that is absolutely French. His macaroni stuffed with black truffle, artichoke and duck foie gras, gratinée with aged Parmesan is an unforgettable dish that people travel to Paris to experience. There is also the less formal Le 114 Faubourg, which has also been awarded its own Michelin star. Showcasing the extraordinary cuisine of world-renowned chef Eric Frechon, this smart but relaxed two-floor space is energised by an open-plan kitchen.

Spa Filled with Parisian sunlight, Spa Le Bristol by La Prairie opens onto a pleasant interior garden and has eight treatment rooms, including a private couple suite. Expert therapists will swiftly understand your needs and stress points. The sun lit rooftop pool is a rarity in Paris and a must-see.

Our Experience The warm welcome you receive on arrival at Le Bristol carries through the stay; the service is second to none. At check-in, being handed an old-school physical key really added to the experience. Walking through the foyer, you notice the polished marbled floor and the original art adorning the walls, which really adds to the grandeur. The team pointed out Socrate, Le Bristol’s permanent feline resident, who recently took the role from his retired father Fa-Raon. Socrate can often be found in the foyer, being fussed over by guests and staff. One of the standout features of the hotel was the original forties elevator that we took to our room – it was like being transported back in time to old-world elegance. The sheer size and comfort of the room ensured we had the most relaxing of stays. If you’re looking for a traditional grandeur luxury stay Le Bristol offers everything you could need…and a gorgeous Burmese cat. oetkercollection.com 75

mbarking on a remarkable adventure to the enchanting island of Mauritius, I had the pleasure of immersing myself in its captivating beauty. Located in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Southeast Africa and renowned for its pristine beaches it offers the perfect sanctuary for those wanting to spend days lounging on the beach or on the ocean. It also has so much more to offer beyond the beach, this is truly a destination with something for everyone. During my stay, I had the pleasure of experiencing two luxurious resorts, Sands Suites Resort and Spa and Maradiva Villas Resort and Spa. Both resorts are located on the sheltered west coast of the island, offering magical sunsets over the Indian Ocean and providing the perfect base to make fond memories exploring the island’s cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes and wildlife encounters.

The city’s bustling Caudan Waterfront is a hub of activity, with a wide range of shops, restaurants and entertainment options. I enjoyed leisurely strolling along the waterfront, indulging in local delicacies and exploring the vibrant marketplace. The iconic Le Morne Brabant mountain stood majestically, its rugged cliffs and verdant flora creating a postcard perfect backdrop. I embarked on a memorable hike, guided by knowledgeable local Allan Ramalingum (who runs the adventure company Local Spirit) who shared the mountain’s history and legends. The breathtaking 360-degree views from the top are worth the exertion and Le Morne’s pristine beaches, with their powdery sands and sparkling turquoise waters, provided an idyllic retreat to cool off after my descent.

Lunch at Eureka House This magnificent house is a well-preserved colonial mansion that offers a glimpse into Mauritius’s history. Like time has stood still, it is very much as it was when originally occupied. Fortunately for me, it now serves delicious traditional Mauritian food as well as serving as a time travel machine. I took lunch on the veranda in the company of the current owner of the house, Jacky de Maroussem. A perfect host, his anecdotes brought the history of the house to life. Afterwards, the extensive grounds provided the perfect opportunity to walk off my lunch in a world of peace and calm, exploring its waterfalls and indigenous flora.

Breakfast with Giraffes at Casela Nature Park Head to Casela Nature Park, located close to Flic en Flac to sample its incredible array of activities and fun experiences on offer. With an impressive population

of over 1800 animals; if you are willing to connect with nature or seek your next dose of adrenaline this is the place for you. I had the amazing opportunity of having my breakfast with the tallest animal on earth. These sweet and gentle giants were the perfect companion for breakfast and once I had fed them, I got to enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet while these majestic animals roamed around keeping a close eye on me.

Day Trip to Mahebourg Visit the charming town of Mahebourg, located on the Southeastern coast of Mauritius. Explore its historical sites, such as the Naval Museum and the Maheborg market, where you can find local crafts, spices and fresh produce. Take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the views of its lagoon (the biggest in Mauritius). Here I opted for a boat trip which was the perfect opportunity to explore and swim in the turquoise waters. Afterwards, I stopped for lunch at Karay Mario, housed in a building that once was a sugar plantations infirmary. It offers only locally sourced ingredients with daily sumptuous specials to be enjoyed.

Chamarel Rum Distillery Rum or food lovers should not miss the opportunity to embark on a tour of the Chamarel Rum Distillery, which is situated close to the ‘Coloured Earths of Chamarel’ tourist attraction in the South West of the island. Learn about the rum making process, from the cultivation of sugar cane to distillation and ageing of the spirits, sample the different varieties and purchase bottles to take home as souvenirs. The onsite restaurant ‘L’Alchimiste’ opens for lunch and specialises in unique cuisine, prepared with local products sourced from the estate itself. rhumeriedechamarel.com

A Wa Watterf erfrront Retre etrea at, Woven into the Lands andsccape Framed by lush mountains and set on the serene shores of Lake Maggiore, Kate Kinsella enjoyed a stay at the Hotel Eden Roc in Ascona

Location The timeless Hotel Eden Roc, Ascona awaits your arrival whilst situated peacefully on the shores of Lake Maggiore, Switzerland. The 1.5-hour scenic drive from Milan Malpensa airport disappears quicker than you anticipate given the picture-perfect landscapes that draw your attention en route to starting your Eden Roc experience. Although welcomed scenery can be enjoyed from the chauffeur-driven journey, nothing can prepare you for the gasp-worthy location that this exclusive hotel calls home. Given the name of the property, it is no surprise that the hotel also shares its locality with the charming village of Ascona. A short walk along the water’s edge and you are met by the colourful architecture and energising buzz of Ascona’s promenade.

Rooms and Suites The hotel invites guests to choose from 5 categories of rooms and suites. Whether you are a solo traveller, the better half of a couple

or travelling as a group, this chic retreat has you covered when it comes to the ideal combination of view, space and design. Although Swiss landscapes can be seen from all rooms, booking a category that allows you to truly absorb the crystal-clear waters of Lake Maggiore and the valleys that surround it is highly recommended. There is nothing quite like experiencing this mesmerizing scenery from the comfort of your Eden Roc abode, it will inevitably spark the question of how you ever functioned without starting your day this way.

Facilities Complete with all of the facilities you would expect

83

from a 5-star property, a business centre, children’s club and 24-hour room service, there is very little that can’t be provided. The hotel is understandably proud of its spa and impressive outdoor services that have been carefully curated to wow the guests. The spa is one of the hotel’s greatest assets with 7 treatment rooms, pools with bubbles, pools without and treatments that melt your cares away. To list all of the services this property has to offer would be tricky but if I was to highlight anything, it would be the unique butler services which include an outdoor butler with in-depth knowledge of the surrounding valleys and beauty spots as well as a sleep butler that will set your room up as the perfect candle-lit sanctuary to help you into a dreamy slumber.

My Experience With most travel, it takes a day or two to switch the mind to relaxation mode but from the moment of arrival, I felt a sense of calm. The hotel team and their warm and attentive energy certainly helped but being welcomed by the glittering waters of Lake Maggiore soothes the mind like nothing else. I stayed in a Superior suite and in addition to the magnificent views, the use of space and interior skill invested in the furnishings that offer a minimalist look without compromising the essentials is also appreciated. The design is perfectly in keeping with the hotel’s love of nature and style combined. As with any travel, dining is always at the top of the priority list and this luxury retreat anticipates this well by offering 4 restaurants for guests to overindulge in. From a 2 Michelin star offering edible art to Dim Sum and freshly made-to-order pasta, you will find picking your favourite an impossible task, trust me, we tried.

My Personal Highlights Being out on the lake on a pristine sailboat with the captain takes first place. Exploring

84

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Regulars

the lake whilst snacking on fancy bites to eat and listening to how our sailing expert got his sea legs was something very special. It is also important to mention the level of creativity that has gone into the hotel’s dedication to sustainability. Many 5-star hotels talk a big talk when it comes to this topic but I felt this hotel has truly devoted its time to ways they can honour its promise to the planet. Artists showcase thought-provoking pieces using anything that would have gone to waste including a feature wall made out of herbs, flowers and menus that would have been thrown away but is now something to admire. I was also charmed by the fact the hotel has its own bee hotel complete with bee employees, all working towards supporting the ecosystems. My final highlight has to be when I woke up in the early hours, popped my swimming costume on and had a dip in the lake. Elegant this may sound but in reality, it was more of a dunk and woke me up quicker than any espresso could. It was a scene that would have most laughing and I am sure I spotted some ducks cackling to themselves but the initial bravery that is required is so worth it once you are bobbing along in the water, admiring the jaw-dropping beauty that surrounds the lake. Highly recommended. tschuggencollection.ch

DRIVE EVOQUE IN VOGUE

Keeping you up to date with all the latest motoring and technology news WORDS: JAMES FOSSDYKE

The Evoque might be the smallest car in the Range Rover line-up, writes James Fossdyke, but the new model is set to be one of Land Rover’s biggest hits.

T

he Range Rover might be the grandfather of luxury SUVs, but the Range Rover Evoque was the real game changer. Stylish, desirable and still eminently capable, the Evoque managed to tie up everything we loved about the Range Rover in one small, easy-to-park package. While it may not have been the most practical thing on the road, it was one of the most popular, and Land Rover has never been short of orders. But now the time has come for an update, and the currentgeneration Evoque is in for a bit of nip-and-tuck surgery. The recipe hasn’t changed – this is still the same car we know and love – but Land Rover has made small tweaks to the exterior through new paint finishes and headlights, as well as updating the Evoque’s glorious cabin with new styling and tech. The engine range is much the same as before, with petrol- and diesel-powered Evoques joined by the P300e plug-in hybrid, which combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and an updated 14.9kWh battery, allowing it to travel 39 miles on electrical power on the official test. Even Land Rover admits that’s going to be difficult to achieve in the real world, but it says most drivers should be able to complete most mid-week drives without using the petrol engine at all. THE LITTLEST L

Who says luxury cars have to be big? Certainly not Lexus, which has just launched its smallest car yet. It’s called the LBX, and it’s based on the same underpinnings as the likeable little Toyota Yaris Cross SUV. Powered by a 1.5-litre petrol hybrid powertrain with 134bhp, the LBX gets a premium exterior design and a luxurious interior, but packs it all into a compact footprint. Yet all the features are there, including a 9.8-inch touchscreen and, on top-of-the-range models, there’s a huge digital instrument display and a Mark Levinson sound system. Lexus has promised it will be a “game-changer” among compact SUVs. Lexus LBX, £TBC, lexus.co.uk

MANUAL LABOUR With the advent of electric and hybrid cars, the manual gearbox will soon be consigned to the history books. After all, if you were designing the first automobile now, you’d never make the driver do the gear changes. Yet the manual transmission has a special place in car enthusiasts’ hearts, and Mini is honouring that with a new special edition of its high-performance John Cooper Works hatchback. Just 999 examples of the 1to6 will be built, all with a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 228bhp and a six-speed manual gearbox. And only 150 of those will come to the UK. With zero-emission power waiting in the wings, writes James Fossdyke, the days of the classic hot hatchback are numbered. But Honda is sending the cult Civic Type R out with a bang

H

aving spent the past few weeks driving a hydrogen SUV, four electric cars (incidentally from Chinese or Chineseowned brands) and two hybrids from European manufacturers, the direction in which the car industry is heading is beyond question. But though some of the aforementioned cars were very good, the two cars that have stood out for me this month have been somewhat less futuristic. In fact, both were what we call ‘hot hatches’ – boring family hatchbacks that have been livened up with bigger engines and better suspension to turn them into bona fide sports cars. Both had turbocharged petrol engines, manual gearboxes and no hint of a hybrid system anywhere. I fell head over heels for them in a heartbeat. The first head-turner was the Ford Fiesta ST, a car that was recently discontinued just a few months after receiving a mild update. To be honest, I lost interest in the new grille and the digital instrument cluster pretty quickly, because I was just having too much fun. The 197bhp petrol engine is a riot, the steering is brilliant and the way it corners is remarkable. It’s a real shame the Fiesta – and by extension the go-faster ST version – has to die, but with the range-topping car’s price tag of just £29,000 including options, it’s no wonder Ford can’t make enough money to cover its costs. Fortunately, the other hot hatchback to catch my eye, and indeed my heart, is very much still alive and kicking. And God, does it have a kick. The Honda Civic might not be the most interesting car on the planet, but it is incredibly competent, so the new, high-performance Type R is built on incredibly solid foundations. Not that much of the foundations remain. Yes,

90

the body structure is the same, the dashboard is broadly similar and the Type R’s suspension bears a vague semblance of the standard car’s set-up, but that’s about it. The standard car’s clever hybrid system is gone, replaced with a 325bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine and a sixspeed manual gearbox, while a massive rear wing has been applied, along with a triple exhaust outlet, flared wheel arches and huge brakes. If that sounds uncouth, that’s because it is. This is very much a car for Gary, rather than Greta. But the English dictionary does not contain enough superlatives to cover its brilliance. So I took it to Europe in the hope of finding some new ones over there, and even before I crawled onto the ferry I knew it was a good decision. Catching a ferry is stressful – particularly if there’s only one crossing a day – and trying to catch a ferry in a people-carrier is very stressful. But when you’re blasting through the Dorset countryside in a hot hatchback this good, it actually becomes good fun. While I should have been steely eyed and serious, I was grinning from ear to ear, pelting along open back roads with poise and elegance, despite the raucous soundtrack and the Fast and Furious bodywork. But it turns out the Civic isn’t just great on a back road at 6am. It’s also great on a French motorway, where the relative softness of the Comfort mode and the pulling power of the engine make it inherently agreeable. And because it’s a Civic under the skin, there’s plenty of space in the back and the boot is roomier than that of a Volkswagen Golf R or a Ford Focus ST. Even the visibility is good, because that rear wing is so big it sits above the rear window line. Where the Type R struggles, however, is when it’s parked outside your overnight halt and you begin comparing notes with your mates. The Civic Type R doesn’t come cheap – my test car cost almost £50,000 – and on paper, at least, it’s slower than any of its rivals. Because the VW Golf R and Audi RS 3 have four-wheel drive and quick-shifting automatic gearboxes, both are quicker in a straight line. And, if truth be told, they’re quicker around a race track. They have better in-car technology, too, and though the Civic’s interior is much plusher than

Honda Civic Type R

it has ever been before, it’s no match for an Audi. But when you get out on the circuit, the Civic shows you why it’s worth the money. It may not be able to compete with the very best in terms of lap times or straight-line speed, but it feels so much more engaging and organic than its German competitors. A Golf R’s stability and security is impressive, but it isn’t particularly exciting. It doesn’t make you feel as though you’re wrestling the beast. A Type R does. Don’t get me wrong – the Type R is a work of engineering genius – but a front-wheel-drive car with a manual gearbox is inherently flawed. As any sports car manufacturer will tell you, the front wheels should be for steering, and they shouldn’t really be hauling the car along without help from the rear wheels. Yet with the Type R, it kind of works. You just get

92

much more feel for what’s Price as tested: £47,645 going on, and you get the Gearbox: Six-speed manual challenge of working 0-62mph: 5.4 seconds within those parameters. Engine: 2.0-litre Although it helps that the turbocharged petrol Top speed: 171mph steering is sublime and the Power: 325bhp gearbox is even better. For all that, though, the Type R is quite well suited to everyday life. Yes, it’s a bit low, and yes, it’s quite wide, but in every other way it’s as practical as a normal Civic. By which I mean it’s very practical indeed. And there’s more to the Type R than just its capability. The Type R name is legendary among car enthusiasts and driving one will get you a knowing nod from those who understand the car’s cult status. Of course, there will be those who get offended by the in-yourface styling, too, but you’ll usually be able to leave them in a cloud of dust and exhaust fumes when the lights turn green. But this is the last Type R, and driving it is not just a pleasure, but a public service. Because here is an old-school car with a proper sense of fun, and while some of the Chinese electric cars are mad in all the wrong ways, the Type R is mad in all the right ways. Subarashī, as the Japanese would say. It’s awesome.

ARDINGLY DESK

A case in point is this season’s new collection which marries classic lines with the finest of natural materials to deliver a relaxed yet sophisticated aesthetic. Spanning exquisite oak furniture, rich kilim rugs, brass lighting and textural accessories, the autumn collection is designed to work in city, town and country properties. Take the new Stratford table which nods to the clean lines of Mid-Century modern design, and features a uniquely engineered castellated pedestal base, but is re-interpreted and re-sized for modern family living, or the gracefully proportioned Kenilworth dining chair with its slim

birch frame and chalked oak seat and the compact Ardingly desk that quickly converts into a console. And enveloping the whole season is Neptune’s subtle new paint shade – Potter’s Pink – an earthy hue with the textured look of raw clay and fresh plaster.

Key Considerations for Choosing a LUXury Electric Fire We spoke to Andy Hitchman, Managing Director of Solution Fires, who advises on several key considerations to be made in choosing the perfect electric fire.

T

here has been a significant rise in demand for electric fires in recent years. A fantastic design feature for modern interiors, electric fires afford the user a state-of-the-art, ultra realistic flame display with the added bonus of little to no maintenance compared to other fireplace options. Modern components give the appliance an indefinite lifespan and so it’s important to ensure that you select an electric fire that is right for your home, and your needs.

There is a fire to suit every home within the new Solution Fires LUX range, which is our latest line of innovation, with models varying from the LUX75, 100, 125, 150, new LUX175 and the LUX200 for a grand centrepiece. Our new LUX electric fires even allow homeowners to create the extra wide ‘wow factor’ fire element, which can be achieved by sitting any of the LUX range of cassette fires side by side. Front, corner or panoramic options are available, providing endless possibilities.

FLAME EFFECT

SIZING UP

Everyone’s homes and room configurations are different, and there are an array of different sizes and widths to choose from, however it is important to pick a fire that is right for your space.

Electric fire technology has come a long way, but there is still a big variation in flame effect quality, and things like flicker speed and flame height have a big impact on how realistic the fire looks. Go for a model with crackling fire audio, as this really gives you the look and feel of a real fire. Featuring Solution Fires’ signature high definition, ultra realistic contoured flame effect technology and crackling fire audio, the LUX range offers a visually

stunning effect and unparalleled authentic experience.

CUSTOMISATION

Many people want to be able to tailor their fire to suit their interior design style and individual taste, and having a customisable element to your fire is a big benefit. Offering a truly bespoke solution, users can fine tune the LUX display with seven new pre-set illumination themes, and a choice of nine independent fuel, flame and downlight colours which can be adjusted by brightness plus a premium, handmade fixed real wood log fuel bed. The Vega Collection A celebration of all that surrounds us and its hypnotic effect

T

o be human is to be curious, to push the boundaries of discovery and to want to know more - Why are we here? What else is out there? The fascination which started The Vega Collection began with these philosophical notions. Indeed, this collection is about space and astronomy, but it is about more than just stars and planets; it is a scrapbook of human discovery; the early ideas of space that bewitched our ancestors with its greatness through to the discoveries allowed by modern day technological advances. The same view of the heavens has been observed by human eyes for centuries gone by and although we now understand more, the quietening vastness of space has an unchanged spellbinding power. Vega is a celebration of all that surrounds us and its hypnotic effect. The collection’s creation desires the same impact- bringing this concept indoors and enveloping you in tranquillity and quiet with timeless looks that do not answer to fashion. bella-figura.com

H E A D O F R E S I D E N T I A L S A L E S AT L E G AT O W E N What makes Legat Owen’s new residential division different to other agents? At Legat Owen we are all Chartered Surveyors therefore our work is regulated by the RICS, ensuring we adhere to the highest ethical and professional standards in the selling and buying of residential property. Our residential team are part of the firm’s well-established, and thriving commercial entity so we can offer specialist advice in all areas, including building surveying and residential development land. We pride ourselves on delivering optimum results, taking care to understand our client’s individual needs and providing tailored advice and insight based on our in-depth knowledge of the local, regional, and national residential markets We provide a single point of contact for the duration of the sales process to enhance efficiency. It enables us to provide a truly personal service and establish strong and lasting relationships with our clients. What do you love most about the properties in Cheshire and what do you feel makes the area so popular? I’m Cheshire born and bred so I may be slightly biased, however Cheshire is a wonderful county, and we are so lucky to benefit from the vast green and open spaces that make the area so appealing. The region is also steeped in history and homes in Chester are reflective of that. Our current listings include

older properties with lots of character- a 4 bedroom family home in Mold dating back to 1670- right through to new build homes. Ultimately, Cheshire’s awe-inspiring joie de vivre entices new residents, while piquing the interest of those already living there offering a great mix of beautiful countryside, heritage and great amenities and transport links. focus on mortgage rates and availability, but we are still in an active market, with good demand and properties selling. There are micro markets across Cheshire that don’t register on national news. While we are aware of challenges, we can’t use a broad brush when responding; we prefer to speak to each client directly and help them in their own situation. Could you offer some insight into up and coming areas in Cheshire? Crewe is an interesting town and something of a magnet for first time buyers due to fair prices and good rail links. There are also many new regeneration schemes and HS2 projects in the pipeline. And of course, Chester itself. It’s our home turf and a city I know extremely well. It is a well-established place but it’s interesting to see developers moving into the area and creating new communities that open Chester up to a new generation of buyers. What do you see as the biggest challenge facing estate agents at the moment? We are always conscious of the economy and the impact that has, house prices are a much-used barometer when it comes to measuring the health of our nation. That said, I would encourage anyone looking to sell their home to look past the news and talk directly to an agent like Legat Owen to gauge the market. The headlines

Could you offer some insight into the property market currently? What should buyers or sellers be conscious of? It’s important to have close conversations with agents and independent mortgage brokers to help look beyond the “mortgage headlines” and make informed decisions. For sellers, there are other things to consider – notably the environment. Buyers are increasingly conscious of the energy efficiency of a home and it is important that ahead of selling, you look at the sustainable features of your property and how you can improve the energy efficiency performance rating. What makes the perfect home for you? ‘The perfect home’ is different for everybody, it reflects your personal style. For me it would be characterful, substantial garden/outside entertaining area, breathtaking countryside views… and within walking distance to a pub! A tennis court and swimming pool would also be rather nice.
