My life in

CHESHIRE RHIANNON MCKAY-SMITH, CO-DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR AT THE LOWRY

How would you describe yourself ? Mother. Hard working. Enthusiastic. Faith-filled. Lover of all things beautiful. Where is home? And work? I’m London born and bred but have been generously adopted by the north and now love living in Altrincham. I work at the inspiring Lowry arts centre in Salford Quays as Development Director. What did you want to be when you were younger? I wanted to run a hotel and aged 7 played a very elaborate make-believe game which was ironic because the first hotel I stayed in was in a Campanile motel on a French motorway aged 12! Name a few of your favourite places to be... At home snuggling with my kids and husband; in The Lowry’s Quays Theatre watching some beautiful, challenging theatre; on a plane off on an adventure; or in busy buzzy Altrincham Market on a Friday night.

What was the last gift you gave someone? A homemade lasagne and a large bag of chocolate for my wonder-woman job-share partner Gwen who’s recently given birth. Tell us a secret/fun fact about yourself I married my sister’s husband’s brother so my sister is also my sister-in-law. #noitsnotincest

“[I am inspired by]...the young carers, looked-after-children and teenage parents that The Lowry works weekly”

What/who inspires you? The young carers, looked-after-children and teenage parents that The Lowry works weekly with through our community engagement programmes.

Who or what would you place in room 101? Christmas tat being sold in October when all I want to do is embrace and enjoy Autumn. What’s been your biggest life lesson? Experiencing grief when you’re young, although deeply painful, put everything you do and you are into a deeply positive perspective. www.thelowry.com 14

The

Josephson Fundraising

POWERHOUSE Natalie Anglesey chats with Michael Josephson about his turbulent childhood and, more recently and importantly, his astounding charitable fundraising events.

Y

ou may have read the lurid headlines: ‘Man jumps off bridge and survives’, and paused for a second to contemplate how lucky you are. But I’ve met the man behind those headlines, and Michael Josephson’s story is a powerful one. It’s the true story of a small boy who overcame adverse circumstances to become a multimillionaire, honoured by Her Majesty the Queen, in 2016, with an MBE. “I remember thinking during the ceremony that my mother would have been proud,” Michael admits. “It all started with a long affiliation with Childline and the NSPCC. As Chairman of the North West Childline Ball committee in Manchester, along with my team I undertook extensive fundraising for those good causes. “The 2017 annual Childline Ball – attended by Dame Esther Rantzen, a range of celebrities and many of Manchester’s leading companies – was held at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester, and raised £210,000 on that one night. I’d been awarded the title of Divisional Vice-President of NSPCC and been given the Childline Patron Award by HRH The Countess of Wessex. But when I was awarded the MBE, for raising over

22

I was awarded the MBE for raising over £3.4 Million over the previous ten years £3.4 million over the previous ten years, it was a huge honour to be given it in person by Her Majesty the Queen, for services to charity.” Michael’s own childhood was an unhappy one, as he was constantly bullied at school. His memories are obviously painful and he took some time to open up. “I can’t remember

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature

anything before the age of five. Although my parents were married, my mother brought me up on her own, and loved and protected me. I was devastated when she died of a heart attack when I was only ten years old. “I suffered a catalogue of abusive behaviour in and out of care until I decided to go back to school. When I was 16, I enrolled myself at college and, at 18, took a BTEC in Business Studies and Finance. I seemed to have a natural aptitude and went to work in imports and exports. I was earning a living – and had recognised my sexuality – but still suffered bouts of severe depression, which I covered with drink and drugs.” In his early 20s, on 27th December 1998, Michael decided he’d had enough and didn’t want to be here. “It was the first year I hadn’t put flowers on my mother’s grave and I was consumed with grief and depression. In the early hours, I walked to the bridge on the A34 at Handforth and sat down with my legs between the railings. Within a short time the police arrived with an ambulance and, for three hours, tried to talk me down. By then I

was very tired and didn’t really want to jump any more. But I felt I’d dug my own grave and had no other option. I thought that, if I changed my mind, I’d be arrested for wasting police time and that they may even put me in a psychiatric hospital. I remember no more, and pushed myself off the bridge. “Unbelievably, I landed on my feet, shattering nearly every bone in my body. I broke both ankles, broke my back in four places, broke my legs in three places and shattered my wrist. Doctors told me I fell 60 feet and should have been dead. I’d fallen forward on my head last – so luckily I had

23

no brain damage, as the rest of my body had taken the impact from the fall. But I was paralysed and they didn’t know whether I’d ever walk again. I had multiple operations and procedures, for many months in Macclesfield Hospital, with more to come. During that time, however, I sorted myself out, mentally. I put all the bad stuff to the back of my mind to focus on getting well, being a success and making my mum proud. I decided that the bullies were not going to win.“ Michael returned to work with renewed energy and the business flourished. “Eventually in 2015 I split from my business partner to be in charge of my own destiny, and formed Stocks 2015 Ltd. Its current £3 million annual turnover will soon be £5-8 million. I love the buzz of doing business deals, even when we are on holiday – much to the annoyance of my partner, Lindon, who has taught me to love and trust again. We’ve been together now for over ten years and were married five years ago at the Alderley Edge Hotel, with our honeymoon in the Maldives. We are in the process of building our own house in Alderley Park with PH Homes – but I don’t want to tell you too much about that as it will sound like bragging,” he modestly admits. As Michael’s success continued, he decided to help others. “I became involved with Childline and the NSPCC at a charity ball. Although I’d been too frightened to take advantage of the help they offered when I was young, I wanted to help others to seek them out, to save them the pain and grief I had experienced. Previously I’d never spoken publicly about the hell I went through, but I now wanted to encourage others to ask for help.“ Michael became close friends with Childline’s founder, Dame Esther Rantzen, who told his story at the Childline Ball using the assumed name of Andrew. She then asked if he had the courage to stand up. “There were people at my table already crying as she read out what had happened, not realising

24

that it was me. I don’t know where the courage came from – but for the first time I stood up in public. I could not speak as I was shaking so much, but I was proud that I had the strength to acknowledge what I’d been through. The response was phenomenal that night, with a standing ovation. Afterwards, so many people contacted me: it was heart-warming.” Since then, Michael has talked to a chosen few in the media about his life, but now feels he can well and truly put the past behind him. He has taken himself off the pain-killing medication he was given for his injuries and regularly goes to a good physio instead. “As far as the business is concerned, we have been very busy working with the likes of B&M Bargains, Poundstretcher, TK Maxx, Poundland and Home Bargains. Recently I’ve changed the business to move into the higher niche end. We

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature

buy high-end brands: anything from L’Oreal to Revlon cosmetics, designer sunglasses and watches, Bulgari Chopard and Hermes, and we recently did a very big deal selling Porschebranded footwear.” Michael decided last year that, after 15 years of supporting Childline, he wanted to be able to help other charities and reach out to more children – so he started his own charity ball which, each year will support different charities. All 450 places at the Michael Josephson MBE Summer Ball on 30th June at the Hilton Hotel sold out, raising an amazing £256,900. Michael has become Vice Chairman of ‘Patrons of Variety’, and launched ‘Patrons of the North’ (www.variety.org.uk), where businesses and business people can pledge contributions for three years, to support the charity and its ethos. He continues, ”I also became a Trustee of ‘The Silverline’ – a confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people (www. thesilverline.org.uk). I am an Ambassador of the ‘Seashell Trust’ in Handforth (www.seashelltrust.

I’m a survivor and, no matter how low you are, my advice is: don’t give up on your dreams org.uk) and a supporter of the ‘Frost Foundation’ (www.frostfoundation.co.uk).” Michael hopes to see the charities go from strength to strength through the dedication and hard work of volunteers all over the country. ”Next year our big charity ball will be on Saturday 29th June 2019, again at the Hilton Manchester. Last time we had Lulu perform a 40-minute concert with her five-piece band, but you’ll have to wait and see who it is next year. Our tickets are nearly sold out already, so don’t leave it too late to get one [contact michael@ stocksmcr.com],” he smiles. “I’m a survivor and, no matter how low you are, my advice is: don’t give up on your dreams. I now have everything to live for. I’ve got a partner, I’m happy and I’ve learnt to love and be loved. You can’t hide in the past and you shouldn’t look back – you need to look forward into the future, at how you can help yourself and other people. “I’m a great believer in giving back. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pound or £100 – giving something means something. If you’ve been through trauma and heartache you know how much it means to help. It’s not just about money. I’ve tried to mentor other people, too. You don’t have to have money to dream. Nothing is impossible. If I can go to bed feeling I’ve helped just one person, I find I sleep much better and it puts a smile on my face. Hopefully, now, my mum would be proud of me.”

GIRLS As Calendar Girls heads back to the Cheshire stage in its new identity as a restyled musical, Natalie Anglesey explores the history of this amazing show, which has raised millions for cancer charity, Bloodwise

P

icture this. I’m on a bus driving through the picturesque village of Burnsall, full of honey-coloured Yorkshire stone cottages, to meet up again with two of Cheshire’s most famous sons. Both from Frodsham, they are multi-award winners in their fields. Ring any bells? You’ve probably guessed they are Gary Barlow and Tim Firth. We are all reunited in Burnsall Village Hall to hear about the next stage in the story of the world-famous ‘calendar girls’. Several years ago they posed for a WI nude calendar, initially to raise money for a settee at their local hospital, where one of their husbands was being treated for cancer. They ended up raising £5 million for blood cancer charity, Bloodwise! Producer of Calendar Girls the Musical, David Pugh, was quick to reassure them: “Once again we‘ve given a firm commitment that a section of money from any profits will still go to Bloodwise, the UK’s specialist blood cancer charity, for further research. That’s the least we can do to honour your incredible story.” You may already be familiar with their amazing global success story from either reading Tim Firth’s best-selling book, or seeing their life-

affirming journey in the award-winning film; or as a play on stage; or even as a musical. Tim has already won an Olivier Award and UK Theatre Award for Best New Musical, as well as the British Comedy Awards Best Comedy Film for Calendar Girls. But there’s another chapter of their story, which even Tim didn’t think he would write. “The great Stephen Sondheim once said: ‘Musical comedies aren’t written – they are rewritten’,” Tim grins. “We made a mistake in calling our first musical foray together simply The Girls; many people said they didn’t realise it was the calendar girls story set to music. To be given a chance to revisit the Calendar Girls in musical form is a unique opportunity for both Gary, who wrote the music and me, to think it through again. We are on the same wavelength,

We’ll be keeping an eye on the back stalls just in case Tim and Gary are checking out our reactions 27

presumably because we grew up in the same village where I still live; and we are both mad about music. We love this story and wanted to do our best for these amazing women.” Gary Barlow – who, with Take That, has written and co-written 14 number one singles, has sold over 50 million records worldwide and is a six-times Ivor Novello Award winner – agrees. “We’d written about 50 songs and honed them down for the show, but the more we watched it, often from the back of the stalls, the more we came to the same conclusion – that we‘d lost some great songs that we wanted to put back into the score. This time we hope we’ve got it right; and we also have a phenomenal new cast. Tim and I not only sat in on the auditions, but sometimes even played the songs for them – and we’ve been lucky to be able to put together such talented ladies.” The new tour stars novelist and television presenter Fern Britton, who was great fun on the day, conducting the proceedings as if she really was the head of the Women’s Institute. She returns to the stage for the first time in 30 years, as bossy Marie, but does not have to disrobe – unlike the rest of the cast. Among the experienced cast are actress Lorraine Bruce – whom you may recognise from Kay Mellor’s The Syndicate – and Anna-Jane Casey, no stranger to musicals like Billy Elliot and Stepping Out; Rebecca Storm,

best-known as Mrs Johnstone in Blood 27 Nov – 1 December Brothers; and WilmslowLiverpool Empire based Denise Welch, who 0844 871 301 will be remembered from www.atgtickets.com/liverpool Coronation Street and Waterloo Road. Sara Crowe’s West End roles include Bedroom Farce, and Hay Fever; while popular Ruth Madoc is best loved for roles in Hi-De-Hi and Little Britain. Ruth and I reminisced about working with genial Sir Harry Secombe, and then turned to the serious subject of cancer, which has brought us all to one of the most famous village halls in the country. “Most of us have been touched in one way or another by that horrible disease,” Ruth admits.” That’s the reason I recently stripped off naked on television for the female version of The Full Monty. At first, I must admit to having qualms about taking all my clothes off on television, but when I knew the money was all going to research to combat that disease, I felt better – although I was still very nervous.”

30

Echoing the sentiments of the rest of the cast, Ruth sums up: “It’s the same with the story of these wonderful women who sat in this very church hall fighting against small-mindedness to pose for the calendar. By becoming famous around the world, they have raised millions for research. I have such respect for them. I feel so proud to appear in this show and, along with the rest of the cast, I’ll be taking my clothes off with much pride. We just feel honoured to be part of their story.” As we said goodbye, there was just enough time for some last-minute pictures with Tim, Gary and the cast, on the village green. As if Gary hasn’t enough on his plate, with a new album out in November and a new Take That tour lined up for next year, one young reporter cheekily asked him, if he was ever to appear in a nude calendar, which month would he be? Rather taken aback, Gary laughed and jokingly replied: “Well it wouldn’t be one of the winter months!” Now there is the restyled Calendar Girls The Musical to look forward to at The Lowry and we’ll be keeping an eye on the back stalls just in case Tim and Gary are checking out our reactions.

The Rise of the

STRONGER Woman

Natalie Anglesey spends some time with Tamara Ecclestone Rutland to discover the secrets of her success as a businesswoman, and her views on motherhood

T

amara Ecclestone Rutland was born with that rare combination of beauty, brains and, of course, money. The daughter of multi-billionaire Bernie Ecclestone of Formula One fame, and Slavica, his Slovakian model wife, Tamara was born in Milan in 1984 and speaks fluent Italian and Croatian. She freely admits that being Bernie’s daughter has been a major influence in her life. “My father was obviously a huge inspiration to us. He was self-made, and worked from a very young age. I’ve definitely grasped some of his business knowledge and the way he worked so hard to provide for his family. Everything I do now with the businesses is about making sure my own daughter, Fifi, is provided for when she grows up.” It would be easy to simply enjoy the life of a wealthy celebrity, but Tamara is not only wife to businessman Jay Rutland, and mother of their daughter, she’s also a successful businesswoman. Any tips for managing stress? “Life’s too short to be stressed all the time,” Tamara replies. “I definitely take time out for

beauty treatments, and have a massage if I’m feeling that life is getting on top of me. But I would encourage anyone to remember that business is business – it’s just a job and you can only do your best; always remember that we are only human.” As well as her own brands, SHOW DRY and SHOW BEAUTY, which were launched in this country in Harvey Nichols, Harrods and Selfridges, Tamara has also developed a range of products for her daughter. “They say when you start a business you need to stick to what you know and it won’t go wrong – and having good hair and looking after my four-year-old daughter are things I know a lot about. ‘Fifi and Friends’ was born purely because, when I had a baby, I wanted to use products that didn’t contain ‘nasties’ – so we started from there. “I wasn’t confident in putting any other brand on my daughter’s skin, so I developed my own. Both brands have been a labour of love. I’m just pleased that SHOW is being used across the

hairdressing industry and is known for being such a strong brand now, while Fifi and Friends has really taken off. It’s so exciting to see.” But is Sophia – Fifi for short – too young to understand what’s been created for her? “Sophia is quite a character and, to be honest, every aspect of the range was tried and tested with her, from the design of the packaging to the testing of the products, before they went out on the shelves and were available online. She doesn’t hold back and her opinion is the most important thing to me.” Fifi has just started school, which can be a traumatic time for both parent and child. Tamara, like any other young mum, is relieved it was a relatively easy transition. “She’s loving it! We’ve had a few tricky days but she’s settling in really well and I couldn’t be prouder of her. I feel that being at school is only going to enhance her life – especially as she’s our only child for the moment.” You may have seen the recent headlines about Tamara breastfeeding her four-year-old daughter and you may also have seen her defending her case on television. “Things like Loose Women are a great platform for getting your point across. I do feel as if I’ve become the spokesperson for breastfeeding, and that’s slightly strange to me. I never even thought I’d be the type to breastfeed. I think overall you need to go with becoming a mother – and see what happens. Planning what’s going to happen goes instantly

out of the window. Breastfeeding your child is the most natural thing in the world – and we can’t judge any other mother on how they choose to be a parent.” Now Tamara has more time to concentrate on her business: with global brands and the London market doing well, her brands are also available in Manchester at Harvey Nichols– so why here? “That was an easy decision – Manchester is just as cosmopolitan a city as London is and, just because I’m not based there, it doesn’t mean I can’t have the brand there. It’s been a great success and I’m so happy everybody loves it as much as the London customers have, so far.” It must be a constant irritant that because of your glamorous looks, some may question your abilities as a businesswoman; how do you deal with that? “Women will always face a tougher challenge when it comes to business, but I’d like to think that, in 2018, times are changing and we don’t face too much of an uphill battle. Most of the people behind my brands are strong women, so I feel right at home in all our meetings.”

The former model is constantly in the public eye, but we could all do with some of her beauty tips. “Firstly, if I’m at home and not working, then you won’t find me with a scrap of makeup on. Any chance I can get to stay in my PJs, I take. I’d say take any opportunity you can to be make-up free, for sure. My SHOW Beauty Dry Shampoo is a godsend if you have a busy life, and I also use our SHOW Beauty Sublime Repair Mask every week as an intensive treatment to keep my hair looking and feeling healthy. Other brands I love include Charlotte Tilbury, Nars and Dr Perricone, No Foundation Foundation – which is fantastic if you’re on the move. With Tamara’s Instagram account registering 424.1k followers and the ever-present online bullying, how does she deal with it and does she ever wish she could switch off social media completely? “I’ve developed a very thick skin when it comes to trolls, to be honest. They rarely get to me; they annoy Jay more. Social media are fantastic in so many ways but they’re very addictive. I’d definitely suggest taking time out on Instagram as much as you can during the day. Saying that, I’m constantly on it.” Your charity work is less well known. “I’m a massive fundraiser for Great Ormond Street Hospital and do whatever I can for them. Each Christmas we visit the wards with presents for the children, and the work they do is amazing. I also sell a lot of my clothes via eBay and all proceeds go directly to them. Right now I’m supporting my sister Petra’s foundation, and she’s opening up a centre supporting children on the autistic spectrum in Fulham. It’s called Petra’s Place and you can find out more at www. petrasplace.co.uk.” Perhaps critics will now know a bit more about Tamara who is a strong supporter of women. Indeed she has an inspiring mantra on her Instagram: Here’s to strong women–May we know them– May we be them–May we raise them.

Making Business Easier this

Christmas

B

uild My Gift offers gift-givers a simple, efficient way of showing you care. With their extensive range of luxury branded products they’ve got Corporate gifting wrapped up! The team at Build My Gift personally build each gift tailored to your request, guaranteed to create the WOW factor. Build my Gift was launched in 2017 by husband and wife team Ras and Manveel. Here we meet the team and get advice on how to make gifting easier.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourselves? Ras: I hold a Masters degree in HR

Management and prior to setting up Build My Gift I worked for luxury good conglomerate LVMH - Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton - and the BBC. When choosing a career path it was never my intention to start my own business or be an entrepreneur. I took a traditional route of degree, masters and then into my first job – a HR role. Working in HR for more than five years and progressing in my career, it wasn’t until I was hit with a lightbulb moment that I decided I wanted more. Manveel - I have always loved taking on new challenges and my entrepreneurial spirit has meant I have managed several

businesses since graduating from Aston University with a Business Management degree. Over the past year since setting up BuildMyGift.com, I have come to realise owning my own business is so much more than just a job or a career, it’s a passion, because if you don’t have this passion you’re going to fail.”

Can you tell us the inspiration behind your business?

We created Build My Gift out of a need for better gifting options and a joy for treating those closest to us. Our underlying mission is to help spread love and appreciation. Showing gratitude through a gift, be it big or small, is a

custom we have always believed in – there is no better feeling than bringing a smile to someone’s face. We have always loved to gift however we often found ourselves frustrated with roaming store to store to find that perfect something – it was costly, time-consuming not to mention inconvenient. We wanted our gifts to feel personal and well thought out, memorable and uplifting. Wouldn’t it be perfect if it all could be done in one place?...from there, the idea of Build My Gift was born! Presumably the lead up to Christmas is a busy time for you? To us it feels like this year has flown by, and it’s certainly not slowing down any time soon. At Build My Gift HQ September is a huge milestone because we’re in full on Christmas prep mode. We’ve mastered the art of planning ahead so if there’s one piece of advice we could tell our corporate clients it’s this: start thinking about your holiday gifting now! 43

Kingdom Here Anna Du Pré meets Jane Hubbard, Director of HR at Chester Zoo to find out more about running one of the UK’s largest tourist attractions. As the one of the UK's largest tourist attractions, there must be a huge workforce. Can you tell us a little bit about this? How many people you employ and the range of jobs fulfilled? Yes, we are the UK’s most visited tourist attraction outside London, so it takes a large dedicated team to run a visitor attraction on that scale. That is not to mention that we also have 21,000 animals to care for, 5 national plant collections to conserve and more than 80 wildlife conservation projects to run in 30 countries around the world. We employ

up to 1,000 people in the peak summer months, including a wonderful army of seasonal staff helping us create a world class visitor experience. In winter our team drops to around 500. This is made up of animal keepers, vets, educators, botanists, field programme conservationists and scientists who are delivering our charitable mission of preventing extinction, as well as a huge team enabling us to achieve this mission from fundraisers to IT experts,

administrative specialists, security staff, food and beverage and retail teams, and many more. On top of all this, we have more than 200 active visitor engagement volunteers who give up their time to be part of something important and help us achieve our mission. What do you look for in job candidates? We are lucky to receive more than 18,000 job applications every year. We live by our values to be mission motivated, passionate people, working together to be the best, so that’s what we look for in anyone who wants to join our team. How do you keep such a large workforce motivated and committed to the values and ethos of the zoo? Every one of us here is a conservationist. Whether you are serving coffee to visitors, caring for our animals or running our field programmes in Africa, you are

46

helping to make a huge difference to wildlife conservation. So we work hard to ensure everyone here is aware of the impact they we are having on the world.

Do you do team away days and if so where do you go? Any that stand out for you as being particularly special? We really believe that it’s important to give all our team, no matter what the job role, a chance to experience the full range of our work beyond the boundary of the zoo here in Chester. That’s why every year we send a team of staff out to one of our 80 wildlife conservation field projects. Everyone has the opportunity to put their names into a draw, and the names drawn out of the hat will join our team of conservation and science specialists in the field. This year, our team are going to Madagascar, where we have been working to protect threatened habitats for wildlife such as lemurs and golden mantella frogs. Madagascar is our planet’s most diverse island, so it is vital that we protect the homes of such a wonderful abundance of species. And whether you are part of our maintenance team or a marketing specialist, everyone has skills to contribute. It’s not your typical ‘away day’, but it’s a big part of who we are! Best thing about working for the zoo? What’s not to like?! 125 acres of beautiful zoological gardens, with 21,000 animals isn’t a bad workplace. But the story of the zoo (Chester Zoo was founded as the UK’s first zoo without bars with animal welfare at its heat) and the ability to contribute towards preventing the extinction of threatened wildlife is something that drives us all every day. 47

People in

Treehouses Based in Wrexham, Moneypenny is the brainchild of brother and sister team Ed Reeves and Rachel Clacher. Recognised as one of the best employers in the UK, Louisa Castle speaks to the duo about launching the business, trying new things and employing people who are better than them

F

irst impressions count. I had been informed by the trusted PR that Rachel and Ed ‘are lovely’ and that ‘you know we only work with lovely people’. And I had no reason not to believe them. As I pulled into the car park outside the purpose-built, widely awarded Moneypenny offices just outside Wrexham the building was smart, with expanses of glass and landscaping and a cute wooden sign denoting where, as a visitor, I should park. Step inside and the red cow displaying all the company’s awards gave away the fact that Moneypenny is a little bit different. Oh, and did I mention the treehouse office space growing out of the centre of reception? Warmly welcomed, I signed myself in as Rachel appeared to show me around. Instantly put at ease by Rachel, I was taken on a tour of the facility and our rather informal interview began. For those of you who aren’t aware, Moneypenny offers outsourced

48

switchboard facilities, telephone answering and live chat to companies from 2 to 2,000 employees. The company was born in 2,000 and the age of the fax machine. Windsurfer, Ed (who I caught up with on the phone later) was away in the Canaries, “A client of mine called up the office and wanted to place an order with us. We missed out on it as there was no paper in the fax machine and no one of the right calibre to answer the phone so I had to phone Rachel to go and load up the fax but it was too late,” explains Ed. “It was bonkers. There was no reason not to be accountable and so we began to play around with the idea of a professional, reliable telephone answering service. “As siblings we are a perfect blend. Rachel is

all about people and I am the technical bod. We are absolutely frank with each other and it works.” The company is now the UK’s largest call-answering service, employing over 600 people and also has offices in Charleston, USA. It is also one of the most highly sought-after employers in the area. You can understand why. If a client sends positive feedback a bunch of flowers appears on your desk, or a ‘wow’

card and prosecco. And this management style comes from the top. “People want to know that managers are genuine in their concern, not just interested in productivity,” continues Rachel. “When we built this new building in 2016, we sat down with the entire staff and asked what they wanted from their office-home. This all fed into the design of the building and environmental friendliness too.” There is oodles of natural light and ventilation. The latter was explained to me but forgive me the lack of details – there are special silent pipes and windows which react to the light. The hub is the lobby atrium where visitors, like myself and employees gather to meet and socialise – there is even a pub.

“Also, I have learned a lot from making a lot of mistakes. I am not afraid to break things or try new things. No experience is a bad one. It is simply one that you learn from.” Ed continues, “Yes, a technologically advanced building appealed to my techie heart but at the core of the building was a place where people would love to work – a place for individuality and ideas.” There are classes, clubs and childcare support and flexibility. This begs the question of leadership and management style. Rachel is passionate on the subject. “We have learned a lot along the way, believe me. But one thing, more than anything is to trust your gut when it comes to recruitment. You could have the

most amazing CV that blows you away but they are just not the right person for the job. Our PAs are part of the clients’ team, they trust them and we trust them. We are, most definitely, not what you would call a typical call centre.” And this is at the core of what the familial pairing list as their secret to success – surround yourself with lots of brilliant people who are better at aspects of the business than you are. Ed has some other words of advice. “Do something you enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it then you will never excel at it. I came to this business from the perspective of the client and that has shaped our business goals here.

in Wrexham, Liverpool, Wales and very soon in Manchester. I have been very honoured to meet some graduates of the charity and marvelled at how some kindness and mentoring can make such a difference to a young person’s life. I know that I, like others, am guilty of living in my bubble and taking certain things for granted. Directed by Rachel’s commitment and passion to people, We Mind the Gap offers under-served young women new opportunities bridging the gap between the public and private sector through all-encompassing, paid six-month traineeships. Whether it is looking at the business or charity angle, Rachel and Ed are, no doubt ones for the inspirational people board. And when the world is full of Musk-esque alpha leaders grabbing the headlines, it is a refreshing and happy sight to see a company with people and technology effortlessly working together truly at its core. (moneypenny.com; wemindthegap.org.uk)

“As siblings we are a perfect blend. Rachel is all about people and I am the technical bod. We are absolutely frank with each other and it works.” Finding the need and satisfying it is far simpler than creating that need in the first place. “Also, I have learned a lot from making a lot of mistakes. I am not afraid to break things or try new things. No experience is a bad one. It is simply one that you learn from.” The plan is that Rachel and Ed manage themselves out of the business by creating a situation and environment for those who are best or better at the business excel. the world as ‘Cottonopolis’, Manchester is home to just one original clothing factory; the birthplace of Private White VC in 1853. Throughout its history, the rainwear brand has created pieces for kings, presidents, prime ministers, frock stars, sporting greats and Hollywood icons. From supplying trench coats in WWI to creating waterproof parkas in WWII, the brand has evolved through the decades and is now a go-to to some of the most established tailoring houses on Savile Row too. TRINNY TRIBE

No-nonsense style guru, Trinny Woodall, is travelling to Manchester this month for a pop-up, but not as you know it. The fashionista-turned-beauty boss is heading north to show us that her new make-up range really does stack up against the rest.

F

or the last 20 years, Trinny Woodall has worked with women all over the world, helping them to find the most flattering styles for them. She rose to fame alongside her fashion-stylist counterpart and co-writer Suzanna Constantine as part the noughties TV hit, What Not To Wear. The pair went on to become world famous for their practical fashion advice for ‘real women’, selling millions of books and filming in various countries along the way. It was travelling the globe as a stylist that inspired Trinny’s next career move. During long trips abroad, she found herself improvising her own personalised make-up kit; attempting to find

68

the perfect tone and consistency; mixing lotions and potions (a stick foundation with a liquid); blending a lip tint with a gloss, and mushing and decanting them into little pots en route. Back in her home town of London, mum-ofone Trinny set about experimenting, planning and developing formulas using state-of-the-art technology, to pinpoint which make-up truly suited every type of woman; and so TRINNY London was born. Available exclusively online, she went on to develop the unique five-click Match2Me technology: an online survey where each skin tone is matched with eye and hair colour to develop a ‘Tribe’ persona perfect for you. The stackable, interchangeable pots are made up of a foundation, concealer, cheek and lip colours, as well as highlighters, matting balms and beyond, for the ultimate, easy, do-iteverywhere premium make-up kit, right from your fingertips (special wet wipes included). Using her huge social following, the TV presenter-turned-beauty entrepreneur is beating off the stiff web-based influencer competition from the likes of Zoella and Tanya Burr, and is really making a stir. Armed with her tribe of 65,000 YouTube subscribers and over 370,000

The CHESHIRE Magazine | Feature

Instagram followers, this 54-yearold has reinvented herself and is striding forward at a pace, into this new make-up realm for the style-conscious yet time-poor woman of today. This month she is travelling back to where her style journey started: to Manchester for her first ever TRINNY London pop-up at Selfridges, Trafford Centre. The go-to style leader will be on hand to offer up her advice on the best TRINNY London stack for you. Here the ‘say-it-how-it-is’ style master tells The Cheshire Magazine’s Laura Garner more about her journey into the cosmetics industry and what really makes it beautiful.

How did you find the transition from stylist to beauty entrepreneur?

I’ve always had a business background, so even though in my early career I was a television presenter, author and columnist, I still negotiated my contracts, and was businessminded. I have built small businesses in the past and it’s always been something I’ve loved, so becoming a full-time entrepreneur is even more exciting because I can balance my creative juices with my business knowledge, and grow both simultaneously.

Tell us more about the products, the testing and the final cut?

When you develop products the first thing you must do is know, for that price point, that you are using the best ingredients in their class. Deciding the price I was going to sell these products for allowed me to work out the level of sophistication I’d choose in ingredients. The less expensive the products, the more the pigment mixes can look uneven on tones, have no staying power and, generally, just don’t behave well on the skin. By working with excellent manufacturers in Italy, we were able to develop products that are first and foremost, cream-based, a really good mixture of pigment and oil, have staying power and would be incredibly easy for a consumer to use without brushes.

69

Lots of brands mix science with nature. What is the recipe for the success of TRINNY London products?

We want to use the best ingredients. We might not be organic but we’re very aware of the fundamental things important to our brand and that means being paraben- and cruelty-free. We’re an inclusive brand, so everyone should be able to buy. We’re also part of something called Positive Luxury, which is an association that monitors the excellent efficacy of a brand. Our manufacturers are screened to ensure that they’re using the best practices and ingredients.

The Match2Me seems so brilliantly simple – is that all there is to it when it comes to choosing the right colours for you? For the consumer, we want to make it as simple as possible. When you click on Match2Me on the website, you answer just a few questions about skin, hair and eye colour and, in a matter of seconds, are prescribed a selection of colours from the brand that best suits you. Most makeup brands are driven by trends, whereas we’re far more led by our consumer and what suits her best. If she wants to be in fashion, she can apply make-up in the most fashionable way, whether that’s a statement lip or a smoky eye, but fundamentally, TRINNY London suits her. That make-up will look like she owns it and not the other way round – you’ll see her face before you see her make-up, instead of her face being masked by colours that don’t sit comfortably on her skin.

Being such a hands-on person, how did you find launching a brand solely online, where people were just IP numbers (and no bulges to jiggle!)? The initial customer of TRINNY London came from my social media following and, having built that

audience over the last four years, I really know these women. This is by building my own community on Instagram and Facebook, where my followers are so engaged, I am able to engage back and build a trust like no other. I may not be able to touch her, but she’s able to open up in a two-way dialogue that takes place on social media. We have 18 Trinny Tribe groups on Facebook globally, and we’re building them up on Instagram – these are women who love what we stand for and feel confident within themselves. It’s a community of women who share their concerns and insights with us and with other women. Apart from the Match2Me, we also have our site’s own Trinny Tribe, which is a collective of 64 women aged 16+ with an entire array of skin, hair and eye combinations. You can browse their images and, if you see similarities in your own complexion, click on them to find out what they’re wearing.

We’ve watched your channel and love it; as do we love all of your tutorials that we watch online. Things have

changed quite a bit since What Not To Wear. What do you see the future of cosmetics and beauty advice being like?

Shops always have a place as women always want to touch and feel things. Even though we can get things online so quickly, it won’t stop people going into stores, which is why we realised we also wanted to have an in-store presence, and why we’re launching our first ever concept store in Selfridges from 14th-20th October in Manchester Trafford Centre. Women will always seek the advice of others. In the past it would be friends, then the media became integral, but now I see the evolution of shopping on social media and seeking advice there.

Why Manchester and Selfridges for the first pop-up? I love Manchester. I filmed many What Not To Wear shows in Manchester and, weirdly, it was where I started my TV career because I filmed a show called Girls Who Shop for Granada. I also love the fact that the further north you go, the more a woman takes care. She really wants to make the best of herself, and that’s something we believe in so much as a brand.

Any advice for someone wanting to launch their own cosmetics brand?

The most important thing if you have an idea is to feel that you’re going to fill a gap in the market. Really think about what your USP is and research the market you are going to sell it to, well. Most importantly, you need to know what consumer you’re talking to. I’ve made over thousands of women, so when developing the product, I always knew what specific woman I was creating for. As I travelled for work, I’d always improvise my own personalised make-up kit in a quest for the perfect tone and consistency. I’d mix a stick

foundation with a liquid, blend a lip tint with a gloss... creating mixes of colours and decanting them into pots; and I knew that one day I had to turn this into a business.

Finally, can we be a part of the tribe? You so can be part of the tribe! On TRINNY London Facebook or Instagram – we’ll be giving you insight into products before anyone else, sharing exclusive videos and you’ll be making new friends with other women who are celebrating the joy and energy of making the best of yourself. TRINNY London will be popping up in Selfridges Manchester Trafford Centre from 14th-20th October. Prices start from £6 (Lip Glow), www.trinnylondon.com

meets sporting pedigree in the new Alpine A110. Harking back to the classic rally car of the same name, the 2018 model is a road-going sports coupe to rival the Porsche 718 Cayman and Jaguar F-Type. The 1.8-litre turbocharged engine is mounted in the middle of the car for optimal handling, and it produces 248bhp. That may not sound like much, but because the two-seat A110 weighs in at just 1,080kg, it’ll accelerate from a standstill to 62mph in 4.5 seconds. IF IT AIN’T BROKE... Porsche unveil a new sleeker, more intuitive version of a modern classic

W

hen Porsche pulled the drapes away from its new Macan at this year’s Paris Motor Show, there were few surprises in store. The Cayenne’s little brother looks much the same as always, save for the occasional tweak. There’s a new three-dimensional, full-width rear light cluster, for example, and a wider, more aggressive front bumper. But the Macan’s styling wasn’t broken, so why fix it? Instead, Porsche has concentrated on the interior, engine and handling – three key selling points of the previous iteration. As a result, there’s a cleaner interior design that tidies away some of the old car’s buttons and serves up a new, larger touchscreen infotainment system. As you’d expect, satellite navigation, mobile phone connectivity and a wireless hotspot are all included. Under the more polished skin, though, Porsche has updated the chassis to make the car more comfortable, while newly developed tyres are there to ensure it corners as well as ever. And up front, Stuttgart’s boffins have fitted a new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. With 241bhp on tap, it’s potent enough to take the SUV to 140mph, and still economical enough to return about 35mpg. The new Macan is available to order now, with prices starting from £46,344. 76

#1 Porsche Cayenne Turbo Looks like a 4x4, drives like a sports saloon.

The Paris Motor Show saw BMW lift the lid on one of the most important new cars of the year: the new 3 Series. Externally, it’s merely an evolution of the previous iteration, but the onboard technology has come on in leaps and bounds. You can have laser headlights and a new digital instrument, as well as a Siri-like personal assistant that will respond to voice commands for satellite navigation, climate control and seat heating. It’ll even explain the car’s various functions. When the new 3 Series goes on sale on March 9, prices will start from £33,610.

Practical Performance

If you’ve always liked the look of Mercedes-AMG’s GT sports car, but worried about how you were going to bring family and friends along for the ride, this could be the car for you. Essentially a fourdoor version of that voluptuous coupe, the imaginatively named GT 63 Four Door Coupe offers customers a choice of two 4.0-litre V8 engines producing 577bhp and 630bhp respectively. Both allow it to crack 190mph with ease, but the more powerful version is capable of 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds.

LESS is

MORE

The 718 Cayman is now the most affordable car Porsche makes. As James Fossdyke has been discovering, though, that doesn’t stop it being absolutely brilliant.

T

he Victorian poet Robert Browning was a wise man. Not only did he have the good sense to move to Italy, but he also coined the phrase ‘Less is more’. This assertion that simple things are somehow superior to their complex peers has struck a chord with so many people in so many walks of life, including Porsche. In a world where luxury cars are all the rage – Mercedes, BMW and Audi all outsold Toyota and Nissan in the UK last year – it seems odd that a manufacturer like Porsche would move one of its cars downmarket. Nevertheless, that’s exactly what the German brand has done to the Cayman coupe. Not so long ago, this six-cylinder mid-range sports car was finally peeping out from the shadow cast by its big brother, the 911. Now, however, the new Cayman is the cheapest car Porsche makes. By becoming even more closely related to the convertible Boxster (a car once derided as the ‘poor man’s Porsche’) under the 718 banner, the Cayman has slipped beneath its soft-top stablemate in the Porsche hierarchy. And it isn’t just the Cayman’s social standing that’s been reduced: the engine has shrunk in the wash, too. Tucked behind the seats was once

a six-cylinder petrol powerplant that was adored by everyone who tried it. But thanks to climate change and the demands of the European Union’s fuel economy test, that soulful, sonorous engine is gone, replaced with a smaller, turbo-charged four-cylinder unit. Porsche enthusiasts will complain that this quest for economy has deprived the Cayman of its character, and they probably have a point. If you drive the two cars back to back, you might notice that the new engine doesn’t feel as sophisticated or as stately as its forebear. To you and me, though, less really does seem to be more. There’s something naughtier and more rebellious about the new car’s exhaust note, and that isn’t the only thing going for it.

79

Drive | The CHESHIRE Magazine

Whichever version you choose, it has plenty of power. Enough, in fact, to outrun its bigger, heavier predecessor. Even the standard 2.0-litre, 295bhp car cracks the 0-60mph dash in less than five seconds and tops out at more than 170mph. The 345bhp, 2.5-litre S model is about half a second faster to 60mph and gets closer to 180mph, and the 361bhp GTS version is even faster. Add in the fact that it’s slightly more economical and marginally less polluting, and you’ve got more than enough reason to favour the Cayman; no matter how you frame it, these are undoubtedly good things. But there’s more to a sports car than performance alone – a coupe like this has to feel right. Fortunately, few car manufacturers can set up a car as well as Porsche, and the Cayman is just another of Stuttgart’s masterpieces. It isn’t just the sublime feel of the steering, the perfect weight distribution or the smoothness of the gear change – plenty of sports cars have those qualities – but the Cayman brings them all together in a much more rounded way. It’s as though Porsche’s engineers meticulously and obsessively designed and developed this car until they simply couldn’t find any more faults, no matter how small or insignificant. You can’t even criticise the ride. The car feels as stiff and rigid as a sports car should, but the suspension is pliant enough to soak up the worst of the bumps. Buy one of these and long trips won’t strike fear into your heart or pain into your back. I’m sure much of that is down to the seats. Despite being the ‘basic’ Porsche, everything inside the 718 Cayman is beautifully made, and the seats are more-or-less perfect. Okay, they’ve got manual fore-aft adjustment as standard, and that feels a bit like penny-pinching, but you

80

sink into them as though they were moulded for you. You’ve got bags of wiggle-room, too, and the driving position is spot on, even if, like me, you’re well over six feet tall. And the best thing about buying the cheapest Porsche? It’s cheap. No, not cheap like a packet of crisps is cheap, but relatively inexpensive compared with its rivals. Prices start at around £40,000, and that’s about £10,000 less than you’ll pay for a Jaguar F-Type. It’s also about half the price of Porsche’s other coupe – the famous 911.

Few car manufacturers can set up a car as well as Porsche, and the Cayman is just another of Stuttgart’s masterpieces Of course, it’s not all hunky-dory. The biggest issue is the practicality – or lack of it. It only has two seats, and because the engine is just behind the driver, rather than in front, the boot isn’t what you’d call capacious. There is a fairly sizeable storage bin (there’s no other word for it) under what would ordinarily be the bonnet, but it’s a funny shape, and you get some even funnier looks if you try to put your shopping in there. The buttons on the dashboard are tiny, too, and you might want a couple of extra toys thrown in for your money (fully electric seat adjustment, for example), but other than that, I’ve got nothing. The 718 really is that good. If this is the automotive manifestation of ‘less is more’, then I’m all for it. The 718 Cayman may now be the cheapest Porsche, but that’s a bit like being Manchester City’s cheapest player – it’s hardly a slight on its ability.

Ever since we stayed at Gordon Campbell Gray’s The Phoenicia in Malta, we have been huge fans of the elegance and luxury that epitomises the synonymous hotel collection. So we were delighted when the opening of The Machrie Hotel and Links was announced last month. Boasting seven miles of stunning beach, spa, restaurants and pristine links golf course re-designed by former European Tour player and Ryder Cup Vice-Captain DJ Russell, The Machrie promises the very best Scottish welcome and design. As a Scotsman, we expect great things from Gordon Campbell Gray’s latest addition and we can’t wait to visit. www.campbellgrayhotels.com

Did you know? Taking a holiday can prolong your life? According to this 40-year study by Harvard University, we now have no excuses not to book your next trip.

Play With Legends

For golfing go-getters there is still time to book your place at the Sergio Melpignano Challenge in Puglia and have the opportunity to play with golf legends Costantino Rocca and Emanuele Canonica, José María Olazábal and Santiago Luna, Sandy Lyle and David Howell, whilst experiencing the beautiful Puglian countryside and hospitality.

Tokyo A playground of bright ideas and fantastic design as well as centuries old temples, Tokyo is a must-see bucket-list destination. Stay at the Peninsula Hotel, often described as offering tech-savvy sensibilities alongside classic elegance. The 24-storey building stands on the edge of Hibiya Park and the Imperial Palace Gardens, it is on the edge of Tokyo’s version of Central Park and is the perfect place from which to explore. No visit to Tokyo is complete without a stop at Akihabara, the electric town, a.k.a the shopping district for video games, anime, manga and computer goods is a must for geeks and non-geeks alike. And what better way to travel than by subway entrance on the basement floor of the hotel so it’s perfect for getting around. For shops it has to be Ginza - one of the most luxurious shopping districts in the world. The leading fashion houses are here but also some little gems; the Mitsukoshi department store, Takumi for folk arts and Itoya for stationary geeks. And just on the edge a great restaurant Gonpachi, the inspiration for Kill Bill. Then there’s the history. Shrines and temples can be found hiding round corners but the most impressive is the Meiji Shrine just north of the Olympic Village, home to the largest Torii gate in the world. As for food, head for the Tsukiji area, to Sushi Iwa. It does get booked up very quickly, especially the counter seats so, like we did, ask your lovely concierge to help you there.. www.tokyo.peninsula.com

y mother and I embarked on the sleek-lined River Countess to experience ‘Venice and the Gems of Northern Italy’. All dining, unlimited alcohol (excluding some premium brands), soft drinks and speciality hot beverages are included along with a choice of excursions hosted by English speaking guides, a ‘do as the locals do’ programme, Quietvox audio headset systems and the use of Nordik walking sticks. Nothing detracts from this first-class river cruise experience. Check-in procedures are swift and we received a warm welcome whilst admiring the opulent reception area adorned with a glittering chandelier and plush leopard print seats on swish marble floors. A charming escort led us to our sumptuous stateroom and we were provided with the utmost care for the duration of the cruise. We later made our way to the Il Castillo lounge to attend Captain Roland Oost’s ‘welcome aboard reception’ and to meet our fellow passengers and together we marvelled at the spectacular views of Venice, known as the ‘city on the water’.

The River Countess is elegant and tastefully decorated and accommodations range in size from 4 suites, measuring 214 sq ft with balconies, to a choice of 61 staterooms measuring up to 151 sq ft. Our lavishly appointed stateroom featured handcrafted Savoir® of England beds swathed in crisp Egyptian cotton linens, and our plump pillows ensured a deep slumber, cosseted by the gentle movement of the shifting waters of the Venetian Lagoon. Other stateroom features include spacious built-in closets, individual climatecontrolled thermostats and en-suite marble bathrooms with fluffy towels, plush bathrobes, cosy slippers and a generous selection of L’Occitane en Provence products. Up with the larks and following a yoga session on the gorgeous sun deck we indulged in the elaborate breakfast buffet in the Savoy Restaurant, the ship’s main dining venue. Afterwards, in the comfort of the Captain’s Lounge and Library, we planned our excursions, beginning with an escorted morning walk around the historic Castello district, where Venetian ships were once built, St Mark’s Piazza and the Doge’s Palace. During the evening we attended an exclusive opening of St Mark’s Basilica, and, devoid of crowds, it was simply magical. St Mark’s Basilica features five Byzantine domes and the 24-carat gold leaf and glass mosaics glittered in the moonlight and demanded our appreciation. Guided into the dark interior we took our seats

And for a very special dining experience, head for the Ristorante Al Giardinetto da Severino, located on Sestiere Castello, and only a five minute stroll from St Mark’s Square. This property dates back to the 15th century and has been managed by the same family since 1949. The main dining room, which features a vaulted ceiling, was once a chapel, and there is also a spacious courtyard where diners are seated under a vine covered canopy. We ended our evenings with a tipple in the Castillo Lounge and as I looked through the panoramic windows, sipping on a chilled glass of wine, I experienced a taste of ‘La Dolce Vita’. Chioggia, our first port, is the southernmost island in the lagoon, and we joined the Padua Walking Discovery Tour. All around gazed in wonder at St. Anthony’s Basilica, one of only eight international shrines acknowledged by the Holy See. Construction is thought to have begun in 1232 and the elaborate exterior reflects Byzantine and Romanesque styles with Gothic influences. During our tour, the River Countess crossed over part of the Adriatic Sea to reach Porto Viro where we re-embarked and sailed along the Po River docking in Polesella. We opted for the

excursion to Ferrara, which was awarded Unesco World Heritage status due to the magnificent Este Castle, erected in 1385, the Diamanti Palace, which houses the National Picture Gallery, and the Romanesque St George’s Cathedral, consecrated in 1135. The following day we sailed back to Chioggia. Once known as the Venetian pantry, Chioggia’s weekly market is one of Italy’s largest and we browsed along the colourful stalls and admired the elaborate displays of all kinds of merchandise. Another of the many highlights of our cruise was the ‘Magical Islands of Venice’ excursion. We visited Torcello, which was founded before Venice and it is the site of an 11th-century mosaic, which is housed within the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and depicts the Last Judgement. Another island, Burano, is known for its brightly coloured fishermen’s cottages and local lace making. We also explored Mazzorbo, the location of a wine estate utilizing Dorona grapes, which produce a delicious golden wine. At the end of the tour we raised our glasses high and made a toast to the River Countess, a true Venetian gem. Gem in the

Mediterranean A regular on the island of Menorca: Mary Jane and Richard Greenhalgh spend an idyllic holiday in the beautiful bay of Fornells, with family-focused Minorca Sailing Holidays

H

aving a family of four children means that our task, when picking holidays, is always to find something that will entertain and – hopefully – educate our three energetic boys and our fun-loving two-year-old girl. No less important is some well-earned downtime for us, as well as activities to excite our interest. A trip to the picturesque Menorcan village of Ses Salines, with Minorca Sailing Holidays, did not disappoint. Their focus on families is truly a breath of fresh air in an age where the individual often takes precedence; here you can do as much or as little as you like, with the family or solo, so an ideal combination. With a top-of-the-range, modern sailing and windsurfing fleet set in the idyllic and safe bay of Fornells in the north of this stunning island, Minorca Sailing offers active families a fantastic escape from normality.

From the moment we arrived, we felt fully ‘on holiday’. The nature of the setup – bringing together excellent organisation and the naturally relaxed atmosphere of Menorcan village life – meant that we were able to unwind instantly. Minorca Sailing Holidays offers a broad array of accommodation opportunities, from local hotel and apartments to spacious villas with

93

The fact that we were able to feel so relaxed is testament to the safe and welcoming environment private swimming pools. All their accommodation is within a five-minute walk of the beach front – the epicentre of your stay; the village’s limited traffic means you can feel confident that youngsters can navigate the local streets on their own after a day or two of familiarisation. The fact that we were able to feel so relaxed is testament to the safe and welcoming environment that is fostered in Ses Salines.

A typical day for us began with drop-off at the very popular children’s club, giving the adults a good couple of hours on the water or sun lounger, depending on our mood. Opportunities included RYA (Royal Yachting Association) lessons; one-to-one instruction; and free-sailing or windsurfing, where your kit was

94

all rigged up and ready for you (we called it ‘valet sailing’), making for relaxing sessions out on the water, knowing that you could simply hand your boat back to a smiling staff member when you had had enough. The equipment itself is some of the most extensive to be found in the Mediterranean, with a vast array of modern dinghies, all of which are fastidiously maintained. The same goes for the windsurfing kit, which provides guests with the chance to get on the water, whatever the wind conditions. Minorca Sailing Holidays tries to ensure they keep fully abreast of any technological changes available to the water sports community; this is reflected in the fact that the centre has a couple of foiling Waszp dinghies and a number of foiling windsurf boards, to give people the opportunity to sail like an Americas-Cup legend. The sheer volume of equipment available means that you will never go wanting when it comes to spending time out in the bay of Fornells. The waterfront team is calmly professional, but also makes sessions entertaining and engaging, and will tailor their approach, whether you are novice or hardened, dinghy racer or windsurfer.

A trip to Club Isabella – a 15 minute walk away, up to the headland – to see the sunset with a sundowner and sushi, is definitely to be recommended. For those who enjoy running, there are some great runs locally, including to the pretty beach at Cala Tirant. We loved Restaurante Sa Nansa, in Fornells where the children snorkelled till 8pm each evening, then we enjoyed great pizza, delicious seafood and a good selection of wines.

Their focus on families is truly a breath of fresh air in an age where the individual often takes precedence

Whether you prefer to race with others or go solo, Minorca Sailing Holidays will cater for you. For those less interested in items with a sail, there is a great morning yoga class, beauty treatments available at your villa and paddleboards to be used on the waterfront, if you feel that way inclined. Life away from the water revolves around a couple of focal points in Ses Salines, including local barbeque restaurant, Ca Na Marga. We enjoyed lunch by our pool each day, but could easily shop at the local ‘supermardo’, owned by the lovely Ellie, who came to Menorca as an instructor a number of years ago and never left. In fact, it is testament to the standards of this company that staff tend to stay for a long time – and that goes some way to explaining the fantastic allure for families who enjoy the consistency that Minorca Sailing offers. Located a 15-minute walk away is the pretty village of Fornells, which offers guests a number of alternatives when it comes to eating out, with local fish clearly being the major draw of this charming village. We were fortunate enough to be there during local fiesta week (a highlight of the calendar), with parading horses and an amazing underwater firework display. A week’s stay culminates in a regatta day, and the prize-giving that follows in the aforementioned Ca Na Marga. For anybody who is looking for a water-sports-based holiday, we believe it is hard to beat Minorca Sailing Holidays. www.minorcasailing.co.uk

Chef Paco Pérez is a master and ambassador of Catalan gastronomy, with seven operating restaurants and five Michelin stars. Together, Paco and his team are bringing the best of Catalan dining to Manchester, the UK and the world, creating a food surprise sensation, which come in the shape of Tastets, small tastes of food, more complex than tapas though still smaller than a plate. "We believe that joy comes from stepping out of our comfort zone so, don’t say we didn’t warn you!" states Paco. The unique serving style allows for the deeper appreciation of several flavours within a single meal, meaning a Tastet can be served alone as an appetiser, or as a small collection for a complete meal. www.tastcatala.com, 0161 806 0547

...with JEZ HOULBROOK, Head Chef at The Kitchen At Storyhouse TELL US ABOUT WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO YOUR CURRENT POSITION? I was patiently waiting for the ideal opportunity to arise and bizarrely two friends both got in contact within a matter of days telling me how perfect the position would be for me.

WHAT PIECE OF KITCHEN KIT, COULD YOU NOT LIVE WITHOUT? Currently couldn't do without my trusty Robo coupe, essential in producing our massively popular dips in The Kitchen at Storyhouse.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE STYLE OF FOOD? I'm totally converted to Levantine/Middle Eastern food now, I obviously knew about couscous, falafels and tabbouleh but there are so many more layers to this fresh and vibrant cuisine.

WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY? I draw inspiration from many areas - dining out to research new menu ideas, books, social media. WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DESERT ISLAND DISH? Rosemary and mustard herb-crusted rack of lamb with dauphinoise and purple sprouting broccoli. Or bacon and egg on toast!

WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE INGREDIENT AND WHY? I'm absolutely loving sumac, such a brilliant ingredient to sprinkle over dishes to give them a fresh, zingy lift - perfect for scallops or an authentic fattoush salad.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MEAL? Lowry Hotel, Manchester a few years ago. Halibut on the bone, mash and bearnaise sauce. Simplicity. Perfection.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DRINK? I can't resist a bottle of Nero d'avola if it's on a wine list when we go out to eat.

SPOTLIGHT ON...

VERMILION RESTAURANT (At Eastlands), Manchester

W O R D S : K E V I N E VA N S

ermilion is a little-known gem, situated on the edge of Manchester city centre. Its culinary style is Asian fusion, with dishes ranging from Thai and Indian to Chinese. Despite its imposing exterior, you might drive past and not give it a second glance; however, once you step inside, it's styled similar to ‘Tao’ in New York, draped in high-end, contemporary Asian décor. On our arrival, on a still-balmy evening in September, my colleague and I were warmly welcomed by manager, Dikendra, who has worked at Vermilion since 2008. It's unsurprising to find that this out-of-the-way venue has a loyal following – testament to the high standard of food and service you’ll find here. Walking through Vermilion, you realise that it is so much more than a restaurant: there are numerous event spaces (the largest seating 1,000 people), which again are styled to a sumptuous design. The bar area upstairs rivals any in Manchester, with huge, luxurious booths to relax in. This is such an amazing space for a special occasion – and, equally, for an intimate dinner or even a stylish photo shoot. Previous clientele include Imran Khan, David Cameron and

many more of those in Who’s Who. To start our meal, I opted for the Ocean tiger prawn served with a chilli mango salad: sumptuous and succulent giant prawns (caught, incidentally, by Vermilion’s parent company, Seamark, in the Bay of Bengal) complemented perfectly with the

well-balanced spiciness of the mango salad. My colleague chose the Chicken Tikka, charred to give it real depth of flavour; it was accompanied by a fresh-tasting mint yoghurt dressing. For the main course, I was drawn to the Thai steamed seabass, featuring the holy trinity of Thai cooking: lime, chilli and coriander, and a huge punch of fish sauce. Cooked to perfection, the fish flaked beautifully and the Thai flavours combined to produce a dish that was both tasty and healthy. My colleague opted for the Lamb shank Nehari – slow-cooked, marrow-based curry from Pakistan: a rich, spiced and beautifully balanced stew with melt-in-themouth meat that was like butter. This came with a handcrafted Indian bread, which was soft and delicious, with a scrumptious hit of garlic and coriander. We felt it only right to accompany this with Asahi beer, as it goes so well with the balance of spices and flavours. My colleague played safe with a dessert of gorgeous Crème brulée, while I decided to be adventurous and went for the Gajar Halwa (a traditional Indian dessert of shredded carrots, dried fruits and milk). This was the surprise dish of the night, as it was not something I would normally order. The best way to describe it is a healthier version of steamed pudding, with the flavour of carrot cake: absolutely delicious! We loved our visit to Vermilion: the food was great and the service and atmosphere, very warm. This is a gem of a place, with such a wide choice, that we will definitely be returning to try more of the menu. www.vermilion.uk.com

SWIMMING POOL Why a later living village is perfect for enjoying quality time with your grandchildren – and a fun place for them to visit in school holidays

F

rom taking a dip in the swimming pool — set to open in spring 2019 — to visiting the world’s largest ice cream shop, right on your doorstep, at Inspired Gifford Lea, in Tattenhall, Cheshire, you can make the most of your time with the family. Research shows that nurturing your relationship with your grandchildren is good for you — and also for them. Half of grandparents who provide regular care for their grandchildren say spending time with them keeps them physically and mentally active, according to a YouGov poll for the charity Age UK. And almost two-fifths (38%) of those surveyed revealed it gave them a sense of purpose, while 14% admitted it stopped them from feeling lonely. Meanwhile, a study of more than 1,500 children by the University of Oxford has shown that those with a high level of grandparental involvement had fewer emotional and behavioural problems.

A Place to Savour Every Moment Thanks to thoughtful design, later living village Gifford Lea, near Chester, gives you the chance to enjoy every moment with your grandchildren. The first phase of the retirement community, owned by Inspired Villages, saw the launch of 48 apartments and

A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE THINGS

urry family members tend not to be as fond of the pyrotechnics as their two-legged counterparts. Our Collie heads to her safe place, with Thundershirt, only to be tempted out with morsels of steak. Here are some tips we have picked up over the years to keep four-legged friends and family comfortable and safe:

#3 Catapult by Geoffrey Fisher, £24 (www.kobiand teal.co.uk)

Farmyard Fun

Fair trade and felt, these farmyard heads from Fiona Walker England are great fun for any nursery. What’s more, they’ll provide hours of entertainment as your little one learns the farmyard noises that are her sleeping companions. We love the soft colours, which go with any colour scheme. Lightweight and easy to hang, our particular favourite is Daisy-moo. Buy as one or a collection. Mini farmyard heads, £29.95 (yoyoandflo.com)

Create a safe space. Your pet probably already has a comfort zone in your home, but make it extra comfortable with favourite toys or blankets so that they feel especially reassured. Also, it helps to muffle the outdoor excitement by drawing curtains and creating a distracting noise: we find the vacuum works well, and we have a clean house! We haven’t had much success with this but I know people who are evangelical about it. Dogs and cats aren’t born with a fear of fireworks and it has been shown that gradual exposure to loud, startling sounds when they are a pup or kitten, can ease anxiety in their later lives. Apply pressure. Gentle pressure can help to soothe and there’s an array of weighted clothing to help. We use Thundershirt, but there are lots of others on the market to try. And finally, stay calm. Pets are incredibly intuitive, so if you are worried about their worrying, they will notice. The best you can do is take a deep breath and be a calm, comforting parent. 119

The classroom CHEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS Cheerleaders to represent Great Britain in World Championships

T

he King’s School has been selected to represent Great Britain in the World Cheerleading Championships. The international event will take place at Disney World in Florida in February next year. It will be the second time King’s has been awarded the exclusive honour, with the King’s team achieving a brilliant second place finish for GB in 2014. Top trampoline and cheerleading coach Rachael Burrows said: “Second place in 2014 was a fantastic result, but it was won by the USA, where cheerleading is rightly recognised as a top-class, highperformance sport, so it will be difficult to improve. We are hoping to have as good a performance as last time, but with the standards improving every year, we know this will be tough.” King’s won the race to represent GB after the American organisers watched the King’s team winning performance at the GB championships. Rachael added: “Even to be allowed to compete in the World Championships you have to demonstrate outstanding technical excellence, creative team-work and an abiding passion for the sport.” King’s has starred at every National

Cheerleading Championship since 2008 when Rachael began developing the sport alongside trampolining at the top Macclesfield independent school. “We have always had at least one national champion team and are now recognised as a pan-European centre of excellence.” 32 King’s girls aged from 12 to 17 will fly out to Florida next year. “We are slowly but surely dispelling the myth that Cheerleading is poncing around with pompoms,” added Rachael. You need both natural aptitude and highly developed skills to display the flexibility, strength, athletic conditioning, courage and team-work necessary to compete at the highest level. It takes a special type of dedication to achieve polished performances.”

Checkmate The Telegraph’s league table of results for independent schools across the UK places King’s as the best performing school in the city. For A-Levels, King’s is also top in Cheshire and the best co-ed in the North West. Nearly half of A-level students achieved all A*/A grades and most students have taken up offers at their first choice university, including six girls and two boys to Oxford and Cambridge. Nine students have confirmed places to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary science. Overall, 87% of grades were graded A*– B for the third consecutive year, with 62.8% at A*- A grade. King’s GCSE students put in an incredible performance, with 18% of exams sat with the new grading achieving the top level 9, compared to 4.3% nationally, 44% of all grades were at 9-8 (A*), 72% A*-A and 92% A*-B grades. Headmaster Mr Hartley welcomed the fantastic news. He said, “We are very proud to be the top co-ed school for A-levels in the North West. These were a terrific bunch of results. Assessment exams for entrance to King’s Senior School take place on 18th January 2019. www.kingschester.co.uk

Environment Firs’t’

Children at The Firs School in Chester have always been taught to look beyond the confines of the school to the issues affecting the wider community and have been busy thinking about the environment, both far and nearby preserving and protecting the world we live in. Year 4 looked at how everyday objects such as a simple carrier bag can be upcycled. They enjoyed designing and making colourful kites. The children have also been enjoying the newly recreated Firs Forest which has been developed into an area for forest school activities. The children make regular visits to the area, which has a newly built fire pit, seating, hammocks and equipment for a range of outdoor learning opportunities. Children have also enjoyed pond dipping and even discovering the presence of newts in the Firs Pond. Lucy Davies, Headteacher at The Firs School comments: “All the children have enjoyed the development of the ‘Firs Farm’ which has given the children a chance to grow some of their own vegetables and herbs, all of which can be used by our chef in The Firs School kitchens. Our Key Stage 1 after school gardening club have worked hard all term to become WWF Green Ambassadors; the WWF’s flagship programme for schools encouraging a new generation of sustainable champions.

his summer was a record-breaker and the hot weather left its mark on property sales. Here at Jackson-Stops Wilmslow, we saw sales increase by around 20 per cent, compared to the same period in 2017. It got us thinking: does hot weather lead to a hot property market? Average daily temperatures for both June 1976 and June 2018 were 19.9C – the joint highest since records began. So, can the recent good weather account for increased property sales in Cheshire? It’s not all weather-related, of course. The political, economic and social climates all have their part to play in consumer confidence in the property market. Brexit, in whatever guise it finally takes, seems to be having little impact on the north-west property market. In Cheshire, we’ve seen no dampening of sales agreed or in properties coming to the market. When compared to the London market, which has seen a significant

“In Cheshire, we’ve seen no dampening of sales agreed or in properties coming to the market.” dampening due to Brexit and other economic factors, it’s easy to see why the number of people leaving the capital for the north and Birmingham has tripled since 2010. 2018 continues to look good for the property market in the north, with more sales, a good level of stock coming to market and an influx of professionals from other parts of the UK. Whatever time of year you choose to sell your home – or look for a new one – many factors will dictate the property market. Choose an agent that can market your home no matter what the weather – or the political climate.

ALL EARS Disney icon Mickey Mouse celebrates his 90th anniversary this year, and celebrated interior designer Kelly Hoppen MBE has joined the birthday celebrations. She’s created a series of wallpaper prints and murals inspired by the famous character, produced by Graham & Brown. Hoppen’s signature neutral palette takes centre stage for the designs with pops of orange, yellow and green bringing out the iconic character’s playful side. Cartoonlike depictions of Mickey sit alongside more subtle sketched silhouettes, for a more grown-up feel. Rugs by Essie Carpets and a bedding collection for QVC have also been designed by Hoppen and launch soon. Wallpapers £50 per roll; murals £40 per sq m www.grahambrown.com; www.kellymeetsmickey.com

British Blooms

Luxury flower delivery service Bloom & Wild has teamed up with Liberty on a limited-edition series of five autumnal bouquets, inspired by prints from the British heritage brand’s archive. “Flora and fauna is in Liberty Prints’ DNA. The bouquets represent perfectly the feel of the different prints and we love the idea of them entering people’s homes in this new way,” says Madeleine Macey, marketing and communications director for Liberty London. The carefully-wrapped blooms come in matching patterned boxes, and the smaller size fits through a standard letterbox. From £36, available for delivery until 18 November www.bloomandwild.com

Honey I’m Home Paint producer Dulux has announced its Colour of the Year 2019, and it was the delicioussounding Spiced Honey that took the title. An expert panel including colour designers, trend forecasters and architects made the choice, after discussing how we use our spaces, what we need from them and what colour could embody a universal mood for the year ahead. The winning shade’s rich amber and caramel tones are designed to warm a room, bringing calm and positivity, just what the experts think we need after an unpredictable 2018. Four

colour palettes, with a powder pink, forest green and crisp grey in the mix, have also been designed for pairing the hero shade with, making decorating easy. You can even virtually test out the colours on your walls with the free Dulux Visualizer app. www.dulux.co.uk

LIFE IN DESIGN

Georgina

MORGAN We meet Georgina Morgan, interior designer and owner of Wirral-based home design service No77 Interiors

What inspired you to create your design business?

My home - it influences the way I feel each day and how I conduct my life, both personally and professionally.

How would you describe your design style?

I wouldn’t say I had a particular style. I love exploring new designs and concepts, and taking elements from these to create something that will excite my clients. Our homes are so

individual. They reflect our desires and passions so it would be sacrilege, in my opinion, to bring a set style to the table.

What is the easiest way to transform a space?

It depends on the space, the natural light and most importantly the person or people who will be using the space. There are two key questions to ask yourself. How do I want to use this space and who will I be sharing it with? What elements of life excite me and what calms me? Having clear answers to these questions will make your decisions easier and bring you one step closer to transforming a space into something you’ll enjoy for a long time.

What do you see as being the design trends this year? As you may have guessed, I’m not really one for trends. For me, it’s about bringing the latest designs together with what you already have, to create your own individual style. There are some interesting - and easily adapted - Geometric and Art Deco designs out there at the moment, which I am enjoying.

For me, it’s about bringing the latest designs together with 134

Homes and Interiors

What’s your favourite colour and why?

I’m not sure I have a favourite colour but I generally warm to quite earthy colours like greens - they are fresh yet warm. I love soft pinks, yellows and bronzes too. Colours with depth and substance are important to me.

If you had just one item in your design toolbox, what would it be?

A light bulb! Lighting is so important in any scheme.

What’s your favourite architectural style?

I love Edwardian/Georgian design. I find the light and freshness of these spaces both breathtaking and peaceful. The same feeling can apply to more modern architecture, where natural light is the key influence. I find this very uplifting and harmonising.

If you could banish something from the world of design, what would it be?

Too many opinions. It’s perfectly normal to get different points of view, but too many can be detrimental. You don’t want to lose sight of what you are trying to achieve. www.no77interiors.com

Describe your average weekend?

I generally work on Saturdays, so my Sundays are for precious family time with my husband and 2-year-old son.

what you already have, to create your own individual style. 135

As well as the peace and quiet of village life, the property enjoys good commuter rail links to Manchester and London, and easy access to the motorway network and Manchester International Airport. The historic building was commissioned by architect John Rogers in 1846 and boasts imposing rock-faced stone elevations under a Welsh slate roof.

The ground floor boasts three receptions rooms, including a dining hall with restored Minton tiled flooring and a marble-surround fireplace. The large drawing room boasts polished oak flooring and the kitchen’s highlights are bespoke David Lisle oak-framed units, a limestone flagged floor and granite work surfaces. Four bedrooms are found on the upper two floors along with a recently refitted family bathroom, shower room and a study/play room. The latter gives access to the property’s most unique feature - an octagonal turret with striking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The property is approached from Woodbrook Road where a sweeping driveway leads to the front of the property and an ample parking area. The set-up maximises the functionality reach across all rooms in the house, with all wires out of sight in the walls. The system is designed to

connect all the home’s multimedia technology, including; televisions, sound systems, smart thermostats and CCTV cameras. With all the household’s technology connected to the same platform, not only is there less demand on the home’s WiFi service, but all the devices can be controlled by a smart home app on a phone or tablet, by traditional remote controls or by voice control. “The way that people interact with the technology in their home is changing and this is an exciting new option to offer our customers,” says Kate. “Not only can this bring great aesthetic benefits to the home, but it also puts the homeowner in a good position to take advantage of future developments in smart home technology too.” Interested buyers can see a connected home in action for themselves by visiting the fivebedroom Arundel show home at Hazelmere. “It’s well worth popping along to Hazelmere to take a tour of the home and to have a chat with the team there,” says Kate. “We have a wide range of three, four and five-bedroom homes available, all carefully-designed in a variety of layouts and styles.” With open-green spaces, a play area and footpaths running throughout, Hazelmere is a spacious and attractive new location which has already proved popular with many home seekers.
