Rutland Water

Where to Stay Bodysgallen Hall

A mesmerising stretch of water offering the largest surface area of any reservoir in England (one for a pub quiz!). Built to supply the East Midlands, the water is surrounded by over 4,200-acres of glorious countryside that forms Rutland Water Park. Walking, cycling, fishing, watersports – Rutland Water offers so much to so many people. If the aquapark isn’t your thing, watch flocks of migrating birds in the winter months, hike the trails - or even get married on shoreside Normanton Church. Rutland Water is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Conwy Castle

Perhaps the best-preserved castle in Britain, Conwy is a medieval masterpiece built by Edward I over 700 years ago. The building contains a set of well-preserved royal apartments, an atmospheric chapel and spectacular views to Snowdonia and beyond. Despite the huge £15,000 construction costs at the time, the king only spent one night in Conwy Castle, perhaps inevitably trapped by a Welsh rebellion.

Where to Stay Hambleton Hall

This Victorian country house hotel, overlooking Rutland Water features 17 individually designed bedrooms, sumptuous interiors, and roaring log fires. Hambleton Hall offers exceptional dining in the restaurant led by Michelin starred Chef, Aaron Patterson, and his highlyskilled team, who use only the best local produce, with a strong seasonal bias.

The venue is surrounded by over 200 acres of its own parkland and beautiful gardens. Admire the sweeping views from the medieval lookout tower before reclining in one of the 15 antique-filled bedrooms or one of the secluded cottages dotted in the grounds. The hotel Spa offers a wide range of facilities and treatments while The Dining Room overlooks the gardens, within which guests can enjoy food prepared from the best and freshest local produce, awarded 3 AA Rosettes.

Where to Stay Dunstane Houses

A grand 15th century manor house set in glorious grounds, Ellenborough Park overlooks Cheltenham Racecourse, where the pinnacle of horse racing, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, is held each year. Built from classic honey-toned Cotswold stone, the hotel houses opulent antiques, enormous stone fireplaces and wood panelled rooms. Ellenborough Park is known for its elegant afternoon teas served in the splendour of the Great Hall and Minstrel’s Gallery.

The Cotswolds

Looking for quintessential England? The Cotswolds has it all – from honey-coloured stone cottages, to twee towns like Bourton-onthe-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty officially covers 800 square miles of gently rolling hills –countryside that inspired writers as diverse as Laurie Lee and Jilly Cooper. Historic palaces and quaint pubs are in abundance in this picture-postcard corner of England.

Where to Stay Ellenborough Park

Arguably the most dramatic setting of any castle in the country. These 12th century fortifications have dominated Edinburgh’s skyline for centuries and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The buildings house the Scottish Crown Jewels, several exhibitions and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is held on the castle esplanade every summer. Otherwise, sit down and enjoy the view - the ramparts are also the ideal place for a panoramic vista of Edinburgh.

Take cosmopolitan Edinburgh sophistication mixed with Orcadian heritage, the modern and the traditional. Choose between two neoclassical-style houses on either side of the road for your Edinburgh base, both are photo-worthy head-turners, full of vintage touches and seriously stylish interiors. Located close to the old town and once home to merchants, musicians, doctors, distillers and newspapermen. A stay here makes you feel like an Edinburgh resident rather than a visitor.

Seven Sisters Cliffs

If ever there was a symbol of British resiliance, the Seven Sisters on the Sussex Heritage Coastline are the perfect example – especially during the Second World War. These monumental chalk cliffs face the English Channel and are particularly good for wildlife, the stretch between Eastbourne and Seaford in particular. The bottom of the cliffs are exposed to the sea, cuttings channels and gullies into the chalk. No houses, no development, just nature as it was intended.

Where to Stay Park House

A magnificent cathedral at the heart of Christian worship in the north of England since the 7th century. The Minster is at the centre of Roman York –devastated by fire in 1984, this incredible structure has risen again. It remains the second largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe. The building is vast, dominated by stained glass windows and archways that create a sense of genuine awe.

Located in the heart of West Sussex in the South Downs National Park, family-run Park House Hotel & Spa is an intimate family and dog friendly home from home with just 21 bedrooms furnished with pretty printed fabrics and original features including Sussex beams. Grass tennis courts, a bowling green, a croquet lawn and a six-hole golf course will keep guests busy on fine days, plus there’s a sumptuous spa with indoor and outdoor pools, treatment rooms, Jacuzzi, steam room, saunas and sun terrace.

Land’s End Cornwall is a honeypot for tourists during the summer – Land’s End especially so. Visit out of season and there’s a chance to sit quietly and watch the waves crash onto the exposed rocks, knowing that the next landfall beyond the horizon is America. The incredible views from the granite clifftop look towards Longships Lighthouse and the Isles of Scilly. The weather can be wild, so wrap up and enjoy a great British spectacle.

The world’s most famous clock is named after the nickname for the Great Bell that chimes at the north end of the Palace of Westminster. The iconic tower that stands next to the home of British government is now back to its former glory after several years of refurbishment. Big Ben has never stopped – even after a German bomb destroyed the Commons chamber during the Second World War.

M arriage follows married couple Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker) as they negotiate the ups and downs of their 30-year marriage. We see them dealing with the insecurities, the ambiguities, the hopes and the fears that are part of all marriages, as the drama explores the risks and the gifts of a long-term intimate relationship. Sometimes funny, sometimes moving, always revealing.

STEFAN GOLASZEWSKI

What’s the premise of Marriage?

24

What or who were your influences when creating this show? I would say more novelists and musicians than film makers or playwrights. People like Zola, George Eliot, Bach, and Stravinsky. Their work has blown me in a different direction.

Who are the main protagonists in Marriage? Sean Bean plays Ian. He’s recently been made redundant, his mum has died and he’s in a turning point of his life, where things are changing for him in the notion of who he is. Nicola Walker plays Emma, who has plans of

Marriage is a show about a couple and how they get through things together. I guess I’m trying to write about what it is actually like to be a person instead of what it is like on television or in fiction. People find things difficult and they don’t really know what they feel. They think they feel one thing but often feel something else. They often don’t know what to say to each other, which seems to be like a more truthful depiction of what it is like to be a person. In the show, that’s what I’m trying to do - connect with the audience about what it’s like The Rutland Magazine talks to writer and director Stefan Golaszewski and lead actor Sean Bean about their brand new drama to be them and live their lives in a minute-byminute way as opposed to a broad plot thrusting way. Digging into the minute and tiny moments to find the dramas and tensions in the way that we as people live our livesmoment by moment. We don’t experience life as big thunderstorms, it’s more like constant drizzle, and that’s what the show explores.

Tell us about the humour in Marriage...

I think it is very important for this kind of writing that what we shoot is absolutely what I wrote down to ‘erm’ or ‘err’, ‘yes’ or ‘yeah’. Without that specificity, when I get in the edit, I’m not able to tell the same story. When your plot lines are as minimal as these are and based on such tiny shifts of emotion or mood, you have to have the absolute pinpoint tools to tell that story. If a line has got the words

“ Casting Nicola and Sean was great as I was able to rewrite the scripts with them in mind and strip away as much dialogue as I could, knowing I had two amazing actors who could do all that for me, which I prefer.

what she wants to do with her career and looks after her Chantelledad.Alle plays Jessica, who has found herself in a relationship with Adam which isn’t very healthy and is trying to find her way out of that, but in doing so is discovering things about herself. James Bolam plays Gerry - he’s stuck at home and is trying to control whatever and how little he can. Henry Lloyd-Hughes plays Jamie. He can do a good pirouette but the ice he is skating on is very thin…

Tell us about casting Nicola and Sean.

25

Casting Nicola and Sean was great as I was able to rewrite the scripts with them in mind and strip away as much dialogue as I could, knowing I had two amazing actors who could do all that for me, which I prefer. I like having as few words as possible for a scene.

The reason why the stuff I write tends to be funny or an irony really is a reflection of the fact that the world is fundamentally ridiculous and everything in it is pointless - but the only thing that isn’t is love, and the connection between people. If I think about it that’s probably the thing that connects everything I’ve written; there’s a central focus on seeking togetherness. How important is detail to you in this show?

SEAN BEAN Tell us about Marriage. Marriage only takes place over 12 days or so. It’s an extract of that time in their lives and you drop in to watch their lives. However, what is in those days is rich, revealing and you see what a relationship is... what a marriage is. Their doubts, fears, joy, happiness and heartbreak that go into everyday living. What struck you about the script?

Stefan’s dialogue is very natural and free flowing. It doesn’t seem like that sometimes when you are doing it. I guess we all jump to conclusions about how we perceive delivery of

What do you hope audiences take from Marriage? I hope that the audience will connect with it and feel that it reflects what it’s like to be them, and that it reflects the warmth, humour and the shared world view that you have in a relationship. The shared moments and joys, but potential for frustration and the impossibilities of it. When people get married they make a impossiblecompletelypledgeto be together happily for the rest of their lives, and no one can do that, yet everyone tries. That’s what makes it a beautiful thing. In a marriage you are spending all day every day trying to make this thing work that really shouldn’t. It’s impossible to live with one person all day every day for the rest of your life, but you try it because you love each other and it’s worth it and worth trying for.

You need all that to be as written, so I am very specific on the script. Actors tend to be very generous as they have read them and understood the nature of what it is, and come on board with that. I’m sure they get annoyed at me for telling them what they have said and when they should have said something else, but they are always very gracious and patient with me.

I think there’s something really gorgeous about humans and worth celebrating.

muddled in the wrong way or if it’s slightly altered, that can really change the story. So much of what I do is done on implication and inference, and it’s a very specific game.

What inspired you to write Marriage?

26

What inspired the show was seeing the world full of beautiful things, where people fall in love and then do their best to be together.

therutlandmagazine.co.uk

What’s it been like working with Nicola? It’s been a real pleasure for me working with Nicola, and I know everyone says that, but it really has. Why should people watch Marriage?

the lines, and sometimes you go for the easiest option, but Stefan breaks it up and doesn’t allow it to just become onedimensional thought. There’s a lot happening in between various sentences and statements we make which is hard to get your head around, but makes it very varied and rich. He also throws in a lot of business: props, opening and shutting bins, getting tissue paper out at the same time as you are talking, which is something you have to get used to. However it’s very well observed and quite hard work to get your head around, even though it’s very naturalistic and free flowing. There’s so many different layers he has created within his script.

Tell us about the situation with Jamie, Emma’s colleague? Ian is a man who isn’t very sure of himself and not very confident. He used to be when he had a job and was in a relatively high up position. He was a moderator at his firm, but that’s gone and he’s recently lost his mother. Emma is working and going places. Then there’s a younger man on the scene [Jamie] so when you add them all together, he’s quite suspicious. Ian is a very vulnerable and unsettled man and lots of little things begin to stir up into a big pot of worry! Tell us about working with Stefan. Stefan is very communicative. He has lived with this project for so long that he knows what he wants from us, it’s a matter of getting on his wavelength. I’ve never really thought this much about what I say or do, but in this I feel very grateful to be able to have that opportunity. It’s not method acting, but you really do think about how you are doing a scene. You have to be so truthful in the portrayal to bring out all the feelings and emotions that Stefan has put in.

People will be able to see many things that they can relate to in their own lives and their own relationships. There aren’t any big stunts or reveals, it’s just a very simple story, simply told, about people and the complications of daily life. Marriage is available now on the BBC iPlayer

With its comfortable, relaxed and distinctive appearance, knitwear is the beating heart of the collection, filtering through its many categories including down jackets, travelwear and footwear. Soft knitted surfaces revolutionise the style of down jackets and elevate travelwear. Knitwear introduces colour expressions, pure or combined with neutrals, together with special yarns that enrich textures with a tweed effect.

Wardrobe classics in all their forms offer something for every occasion whilst innovative garments are the result of new approaches to tradition: chiné and vanisé techniques, jacquard inlays, embroidery and combinations of stitches result in different textures that replace patterns, always in a refined, harmonious and contemporary manner.

Patterns add a refined style to the fabrics in the collection: classic chalk stripes go hand in hand with new interpretations of tweed, houndstooth and Prince of Wales – introducing colours with refined effects to build subtle and chromatic harmonies. Corduroy is also brought to the forefront, renewed with brand new délavé effects, which enrich the colours and enhance the textured appearance.

The detailed research that goes into choosing the highest-quality materials and fabrics aims to ensure the utmost comfort and lightness whilst at the same time maintaining each fabric’s identity, the traditional values of its texture and the unique character of its fibers. Cashmere and superfine wools meet exquisite baby camel fibers whilst precious suedes and nappa leathers join lightweight shearlings in a variety of appearances.

Ajourney is not just a metaphor for progress, dynamism and exploration, but it also represents an opportunity for exchange, it lends a new worldview and creates new opportunities to learn. The Brunello Cucinelli Autumn Winter 2022 Collection is inspired by an ever-transforming urban world, a crossroads where different ideas of daily style intersect, where culture branches out from tradition according to modern-day needs, welcoming freedom and at the same time embracing the past.  Comfort, dynamism and softness are values that underpin all fabrics and volumes, striking the perfect balance between elegance and ease. Starting from the sartorial shapes of the blazer, all elements express an enveloping feel, with soft lines that combine a contemporary vision and refined style.

New coats and peacoats merge the prestige of elegant sartorial lines with modern leisure taste. Outerwear and down jackets with enveloping and longer lines become more relevant in the creation of outfits. The soft and modern volumes of trousers play an increasingly important role in defining the style of an outfit, renewing classic sartorial models in the sporty manner of denim.

The RUTLAND Magazine | Health & Beauty 39

My makeup started with a soft pale pink sparkle eyeshadow because I love a sparkly shadow. I recommend our Mood 4Ever palette, it's the most K THE E XPE R T

As founder of a makeup brand, I'm often asked about tips for makeup for the perfect bridal look. For me the best bridal makeup look enhances the best version of yourself. I was married years before I founded RÓEN, but I have always been a lover of makeup. My bridal look was somewhat inspired by my location and theme of the wedding. The venue was an intimate boutique location in Beverly Hills and the theme was timeless Hollywood Glamour. I wore a simple fitted Monique Lhuillier dress and my makeup was effortless glamour. My focus with makeup is always starting with 'glowy' skin and having beautiful skin is particularly important on your wedding day. To prepare my skin for the big day I went to my favourite facialist in Los Angeles 3 days before the wedding to help ensure my skin would be healthy and glowing. The day of the wedding I prepped my skin with a face oil that I had concocted and been using for over a year. It consisted of Rosehip Oil, Squalane and Jojoba Seed Oil, very similar to the Elixir Restorative Face Oil that I launched in 2021. Its chock full of nutrients that give your skin an instant outer radiance and also it fights acne by opening up the pores. I highly recommend sticking to face products that you know and love; you don't want to be testing out skin products a month or weeks before your wedding day.

effortless dreamy palette with stunning pinks and taupe. People are drawn to shiny sparkly things and eyeshadow is a great way to achieve that eye- catching look. Next, I went with a rosy cheek because I’m a rosy cheek girl and I love the look of a rosy feminine cheek. Our Cheeky Cream Blush that we just launched is perfect for that dewy glow, it has Apricot and Rosehip Oil for a nourishing glow and there is a perfect shade for every occasion and skin tone. Lastly, I used Chanel Limitless Lash Waterproof Mascara, which came in handy because I started the waterworks the minute I saw my fiancé at the altar and had to get it together. My extra tips for brides would be lots of hydration a week before the big day, particularly warm lemon water in the morning. Test out your look two or three times before so that you're totally comfortable with it. Have a bridesmaid keep a few makeup products for touch-ups; your lipstick or lip gloss is a must, and a setting powder is good especially for the photos. And most importantly, enjoy the day and don't stress over the little things, it will be an amazing unforgettable day!

#6 - When returning to the UK, or entering one of these specific countries –Finland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway or Malta, you will need your dog to be wormed by an Official Veterinarian. This must be done no less than 24 hours and no more than 5 days prior to travel. Your certificate will be signed by the vet to prove your pet has been wormed.

For those of us who enjoy taking our pets with us on our European holidays, you may have noticed a lot has changed since Brexit. Gone are the pet passports, they have been replaced with Animal Health Certificates, these are considerably more complicated andBelowexpensive!Iwillbreak down the process into easy steps to make it easier to navigate and plan your trips.

45 The RUTLAND Magazine | Family

#1 - First and foremost, your pet needs to be microchipped, the chip needs to be IOS standard for travelling. It is a legal requirement for all UK dogs to be chipped anyway, and in 2023 all cats will need to be microchipped by law.

#3 - 21 days after the rabies vaccine you can then apply for an Animal Health Certificate. I would advise booking this appointment in advance as the certificates can take up to an hour to complete. Only an Official Veterinarian can fill in an AHC. Make sure you bring your pet’s proof of rabies vaccination and the address abroad where you will be staying, and bring this proof of rabies vaccine with you when travelling.

You may have an animal that was originally rescued or exported from an EU country. These passports can still be valid provided the rabies vaccine is up to date and follow-up rabies boosters are performed by an Official Veterinarian in Europe. Remember to protect your pet whilst you are on holiday from a variety of parasites that some countries have. Happy travels!

AHC can cost anywhere from £100-£250, per certificate per trip, so if you are travelling with multiple animals this can get quite expensive.

James Dutfield BVSC MRCVSResident Vet, If you have a question for James you can email him www.goostreylanevets.co.ukjames-the-vet@thecheshiremag.co.ukat, focus my attention on pet travel and Animal Health Certificates

#2 - All pets will then require a rabies vaccination. Your pet must be at least 12 weeks old to receive this vaccination.

(AHC) A sk VETthe therutlandmagazine.co.uk

If you are a frequent traveller with your pets, it may be worth investing in an EU passport, but in order to keep the passport valid, it must be dispensed in an EU country and also have its rabies vaccinations kept up to date in an EU country.

#4 - The signed AHC will then be valid for 10 days to travel into Europe, you will need to travel through a specific port of entry, this depends on the country you are intending to travel to.

#5 - The certificate is valid for travel around Europe for 4 months, this includes your return visit to the UK.

ituated in the centre of Uppingham, Lake Isle is surrounded by the beautiful Rutland countryside. Owners, Richard and Janine Burton have always worked in catering having started in upmarket hotels. The couple went on to purchase the Lake Isle after being guests themselves for several years. Named after the WB Yeats poem, the Grade II listed 17th-century hotel and restaurant is in the oldest part of the town and has a history dating back to the 1700’s. The 450 year old townhouse is full of character, tradition and sophistication with modern touches.

The 2 AA Rosette fine dining restaurant has a reputation for quality and creativity, using only the best, locally sourced ingredients. Stuart Mead, has been at the helm as Head Chef for 20 years, offering traditional cooking, that takes inspiration from all over the world while still using homegrown, seasonal produce. The à la carte menu changes seasonally with the set lunch menu changing daily. Vegetarian dishes excite Stuart the most, using simple ingredients with a punch of flavour. They prove popular with all customers, (even meat eaters) and include such delights as the roast rainbow carrots and baby aubergine, spicy apricot getting together and couples looking for exceptional food with quality service and a fantastic selection of wine.

Everards has over 150 pubs across the Midlands in a mixture of busy town centre sites and picturesque villages. Many of these pubs have been in the estate for years thanks to their long heritage and commitment to maintaining properties. People are at the heart of the business and Everards are proud to work with fantastic independent business owners who run Everards pubs on a three-year tenancy agreement. The business has continually evolved under the guidance of the family and it is about to move into its 6th generation of active family involvement. How important was the opening of Everards Meadows in 2019 to the business and how has it helped to create a community hub within the area?

Way back in 1849, the company began as William Everard and Thomas Hull ventured into brewing by purchasing Wilmot & Co’s brewery. Talk us through your history leading to where the company is today.

Basedbusiness.inLeicestershire,

Everards sought a brand new home that worked for the business and the local community and Everards Meadows is just that. It provides 70 acres of beautiful green space for the public and customers to explore. What was an unused flood plain, has now been transformed into a much loved and well used area for everyone to enjoy. With quality cycling and pedestrian walkways that connect to Route 6 on the National Cycle Network. The meadows are also a haven for wildlife, with a wide variety of birds calling it home. Look out for the bug hotel and see what wildlife you can discover. You can walk or cycle across the meadows and the site now connects to the Grand Union Canal via a purpose built bridge so you can follow the winding banks of the waterways into Leicester City Centre or discover the stunning Leicestershire countryside. 52 A BETTER BREW WITH EVERARDS OF LEICESTERSHIRE Food & Drink | The RUTLAND Magazine therutlandmagazine.co.uk

Everards Brewery was founded in 1849 by William Everard and is proud to remain an independent family

Everards state-of-the-art breweries, Beer Hall and shop sits on 70 acres of beautiful green space, named ‘Everards Meadows’ that they have opened to the public to enjoy. A traffic free route with quality cycling and pedestrian walkways connects the site to Leicester via the National Cycle Network. Home to an abundance of wildlife it is a great place to enjoy a pint or two! Two breweries are located within the Everards building, the main brewery and a small batch brewery, enabling them to brew a wide range of interesting beers for their pubs and Beer Hall exclusives for drinkers to enjoy.

Everards brew a range of cask ales, craft beers and a selection of limited-edition and small batch brews, including local favourite Tiger Copper Ale, first brewed in 1972 and the official beer of the Leicester Tigers and Leicester Riders.

customers and their four-legged friends can sit and have a drink after their walk.

The shop is performing really well and has recently celebrated its 1st birthday with some in-store events and giveaways. There’s a great range instore and online with local gins, ice creams, gifts and snacks available to browse. Customers love the fact that the beer is fresh and brewed right next to the shop, and the fact that customers can see all the equipment and brew team from the shop adds to the theatre and excitement of buying their beer. Your Minikegs are hugely popular, so much so you’ve had to order a new machine to keep on top of demand. Why do you feel these products, in particular, are so popular?

therutlandmagazine.co.uk53

Once you have enjoyed the brewing process, including the smaller Small Batch Brewery, you’ll enjoy some sampling of some of our favourite beers at the end of your tour. What exciting future plans are set for Everards?

What was the motivation behind opening your first store in May of last year?

Everards previously had a shop at Castle Acres and were excited to design a new retail space at Everards Meadows. The shop is convenient for drinkers to pick up their favourite beers, straight from the brewery behind them. There is also an online shop with delivery or free same-day click and collect from the shop – plenty of options to stock up. The small batch brewery gives the team a chance to run small batches of beers to see how they sell and get customers’ feedback to help fuel the limited-edition beer range that goes out to all the pubs and is for sale in the shop.

Everards were keen to offer a range to enjoy at home and this includes Minicasks of fresh beer, Minikegs which stay fresh for 30 days and bottles together with things like the ‘Everards Night In’ box. Minikegs and Minicasks offer 5 litres of beer (8.8 pints) so are a great option for a party or BBQ and this is likely to have fuelled their popularity – what a great guest to bring a little keg of beer!

When you join Everards on a tour they welcome you to come and explore the world of Everards beers at their state-of the-art breweries in picturesque Leicestershire. Step inside Everards home of great beer and see the two breweries which produce their full range. You’ll find out how they brew their amazing beers –from their much-loved Tiger, right through to their limited edition and small batch beers. Your guided tour will last approximately 90 minutes and will look behind the scenes of the working brewery. You’ll learn about the family history, rich brewing heritage and the premium ingredients Everards use to brew your favourites.

As Everards look to the future, they are excited to see the Beer Hall grow and become more established within the community, holding events and supporting localThecharities.beerrange for the next 12 months will thrill the most avid of beer lovers with a huge range of beers coming from the small batch brewery and main brewery combined. As well as cans and more limitededition beers in bottle, the brew team are excited for the future of brewing in Leicestershire. They also want to grow their pub estate, enabling more independent business owners to realise the dream of running their own pub. www.everards.co.uk

57 The RUTLAND Magazine | Travel I am sure many of you have travel plans in place for a break in the sun. After the past couple of years with limited opportunity for a getaway, many of us have jumped at the chance to make an escape. However, as we look forward to our upcoming holidays, it’s worth noting that the travel landscape has changed a lot recently. Whereas once last-minute deals could be snapped up, booking well in advance now pays off. With reduced capacity across airlines, and hotels filling up fast, planning early allows you to benefit from the best early booking discounts – especially for top European resorts across Greece, Spain, Cyprus and Turkey. So, while many holidaymakers are focussed on this year, I recommend thinking ahead to avoid missing out. One destination we’ve seen a surge in popularity lately is Iceland. Which is particularly popular, with hotels and car hire this year almost fully booked. So, if you’d like to experience the magical midnight sun, book now to make sure you see it at its best in 2023. Our experts at Regent Holidays have all the knowledge you need to create your own personalised self-drive tour to see the most incredible sights. Wildlife lovers should also make sure they plan their bucket-list experiences with plenty of time. Many areas require permits, which are limited in number to protect conservation efforts. From gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s misty forests to the mesmerising sights of Namibia, planning early ensures you don’t miss out. By speaking with our Rainbow team, you’ll also get the best insider tips to ensure you make the most of any sighting opportunities. So, whether you’ve been thinking about adding some luxurious winter sun to your calendar, or have something special in mind for next year, don’t delay – by booking ahead you’ll not only give yourself something wonderful to look forward to but should save some money too.

Our Visit

The Canary Islands are always on the top of our list to visit when looking for a long weekend away in the sun. As there is a direct flight from Liverpool to Tenerife, we decided to head off to the island for a bit of sun and relaxation and Meliá Jardines Del Teide fulfilled our needs in every way. Centrally located in Costa Adeje we had everything we could need on our doorstep. The hotel itself was situated on several levels which gave you the most spectacular view of the sea from our balcony, two great swimming pools, with one exclusive to level guests that also offered you bar service. Our room was spacious with a lounge area, large bathroom and a really large balcony where we spent most of our time just soaking up the view and enjoying the sun. The hotel has everything you would need in a holiday, catering for families with the kid’s club and children’s food menu in the restaurant and plenty of quiet areas for couples to relax and spend time. Our only regret was not booking to stay for longer. Personal Note For added luxury, look no further than The Level Rooms, where you’ll get extra special touches like access to an exclusive lounge, pool and VIP services. www.melia.com therutlandmagazine.co.uk

D esigned to bring more dolce to the lives of guests, the Portrait Roma commemorates the artistic past and life of Salvatore Ferragamo. Located throughout the upper floors of the townhouse directly above the Salvatore Ferragamo Men’s Store on Via Condotti, the hotel offers a unique style of bespoke hospitality, intimacy and privacy, with just 14 luxury suites. Guests arrive through an elegant and discreet wooden door and the reception area is located on the mezzanine floor. Photographs of film and fashion celebrities line the walls and views of the city and striking urban architecture greet guests at every turn. Personalised butler service is available and caters to each guest, providing them with white glove service and offerings such as private shopping excursions or visits to historic Roman sites.

therutlandmagazine.co.uk

The hotel terrace features an impressive open fireplace in a striking windowed wall surrounded by contemporary furnishings. The hotel’s 360-degree rooftop lounge is similarly inviting, with wooden furnishings and lush plants, creating a nice spot for cocktails before breathtaking city views of the Spanish Steps, Trinita dei Monti and more. The rooftop is one of the highest points on Via Condotti. Interior design by Architect Michele Bönan uses marble and wood in unconventional manners such as boar skin coverings on special tables with incorporated lamps; furniture fabrics inspired by the art of tailoring; and curtain linings that could be mistaken for silk scarves. Like Bönan’s design, furnishings throughout are sleek and contemporary. As with all Lungarno Collection, sophistication is accented with dashes of colour, including cream, pale grey, cyclamen, acid green and warmer wood and leather tones.

Our Visit With this being a weekend break we decided to fly from Liverpool John Lennon Airport. From parking in their fast-track car park, it took us less than ten minutes to check-in and enter the lounge for a pre-flight drink which was such a perfect way to start our trip. After a night’s sleep at an airport hotel due to our flight landing late, we headed over to Portrait Roma Hotel. Our taxi driver explained the hotel was close to the Spanish Steps which is always busy at weekends so dropped us off at a quaint square nearby, where we easily walked across to the hotel, avoiding the touristfilled streets. This was a lovely way to take in the beauty of the city. We were swiftly checked in with there being only 14 suites in the hotel, you feel that Portrait Roma is more of a luxury home where you are staying with friends rather than a hotel. We were shown to our room which was airy and bright with all amenities you could need including a small kitchenette, dressing room and large shower room. After unpacking, we enjoyed lunch on the roof terrace which included a small selection of sandwiches and pizza which was perfect for us. The views were spectacular, looking out across the city with the Spanish Steps in front of us. This was by far our favourite space in Portrait Roma, it is only open to residents of the hotel so never gets too busy. We visited again that evening to watch the sunset which will be a moment we will never forget. Having selected what we wanted the evening before on the iPad that was given to us at check-in, breakfast was also served and enjoyed on the roof terrace. We both agreed that breakfast was probably the most pleasant experience we have had in all the hotels we have visited. The presentation of food coupled with the warmth from the team, ensures you have everything you need but also gives you enough space to wake up and take in the surroundings. After a morning of shopping (Rome has every shop you can think of), we decided to go and take in the sights. Rome is a city like no other, steeped in history, with streets lined with luxury designer stores with unique boutique shops in between. This together with the exceptional food the city has to offer made this a perfect weekend for us.

Personal Note Rome was on our bucket list for a while and we are glad that we chose Portrait Roma as our place to stay. The hotel is more of an exclusive members club that you feel very lucky to be a part of, they really do know how to treat their guests to ensure they will return and we will for sure. www.lungarnocollection.com

Nobody could ever accuse the Land Rover Defender of being small, but even the five-door 110 model has been eclipsed by this. It’s called the 130, and it’s essentially a stretched version of the 110 that has proved so popular with buyers. Offering seating for up to eight people, the rear part of the car is more than 30cm longer than that of the existing model. And that space has been put to good use. Land Rover claims all eight seats will accommodate adults with relative ease, while five-seat models provide a maximum boot capacity of more than 2,500 litres. That’s more than you’d get from a fleet of six VW Golfs.

72 A cronyms can always get a bit murky for the uninitiated, but some do better than others. The GTI suffix has a folkloric reputation, and BMW’s CSL branding has become almost as famous among enthusiasts. It stands for Competition, Sport and Lightweight, and that should give you some idea of the CSL ethos. It’s all about the hardcore, performance-orientated versions of BMW’s fastest models. The latest car to receive the CSL treatment is the latest-generation M4. It’s already a two-door, 3.0-litre sports coupe that’s fast enough to rival supercars, but the CSL model is stripped out and lightened to make the car even faster and more responsive. It still has the same 3.0-litre, six-cylinder engine sending 503bhp to the rear wheels, but with 100kg less weight to lug around, the CSL is two tenths of a second faster from 0-62mph. That weight-shedding comes courtesy of new carbonfibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) body panels, carbon bucket seats and the removal of the rear seats, which alone has cut a massive 21kg from the total kerb weight. And that doesn’t just make the M4 CSL fast in a straight line; it should corner well too. All this sounds great, but there will certainly be some disappointed faces in BMW dealers over the coming months. That’s because the German company will build just 1,000 CSLs, and just 10 will come to the UK. You’d better move fast. BMW M4 CSL, from £128,820, www.bmw.co.uk

The GLC-Class mid-size SUV has been a sales sensation for Mercedes-Benz. Enormously popular with customers, it offers a blend of style and comfort that’s difficult to beat. But Mercedes reckons this new model can do just that. It too is called the GLC, and it’s hoping to better its predecessor’s record with hybrid power and updated infotainment systems, as well as a new interior borrowed from the C-Class saloon. It also comes with more off-road capability than its forebears, and there’s some natty new technology to help the driver whether they’re in the Serengheti or suburbia.

Bentley’s reputation is built on sporting success and high luxury, but it’s the latter attribute that’s the focus with the new Azure range. Available across the whole range, including the Bentayga SUV and Continental GT sports coupe, Bentley says the Azure models are designed to offer “wellbeing behind the wheel”. That means the cars get 22-way adjustable seats for maximum comfort and bags of safety equipment to help relax the driver and occupants. There’s also a panoramic roof to let in the maximum amount of ambient light into the cabin, while the exterior is finished with classy, “timeless” bright chrome exterior trim. No, Mr Bond, I Expect You to Fly

The go-faster Aston Martin DBX shares its name with an old airliner, and it’s almost as powerful, as James Fossdyke has been finding out

S teve Miller once told us his heart kept calling him backwards as he got on the [Boeing] 707, but I had absolutely no such compunction about slipping into the Aston Martin of the same name. That’s partly because it’s a brand new SUV, rather than a 65-year-old airliner, and partly because it’s among the most exciting new Aston Martins of the past decade. The product of a new deal between the fabled British manufacturer and Mercedes-AMG, the new DBX707 is an evolution of the DBX SUV that caused such a stir when it was revealed in 2019. The original car had a 542bhp 4.0-litre Mercedes-AMG petrol engine, which Aston’s engineers desperately wanted to fettle. But Mercedes said no, until a new deal was struck between the two companies. Now, Aston Martin’s engineers have had their wicked way with the engine and indeed the rest of the car, creating the astounding new ‘707’ model. With modified turbochargers and revised software, the new car produces a mind-blowing 697bhp (that’s 707PS for those who prefer metric measurements – hence the name), but Aston couldn’t just give the car more power and have done with Producingit. more power means sucking more air into the engine, both to mix with the petrol and cool the whole thing down. That meant expanding the front grille to draw more air into the engine bay, which dramatically altered the design of the front end. Not only is the grille now enormous, but the car is so thirsty for cooling air that the daytime running lights in the lower part of the bumper have been completely redesigned to free up more air intake space. But the front end is only part of the overhaul. Everywhere you look, the DBX707 has new additions, from the side skirts to the rear bumper and from the vents on the flanks to the spoiler at the back of the roof, it’s all new and improved. All of which means the 707 is no more aerodynamic than the standard DBX. That sounds like a criticism, but when you consider the need for drag-inducing cooling vents, it’s an impressive achievement. But while the 707 is styled partly by science, the effect is somewhat more emotional. The high-powered car looks much meaner than the ‘standard’ DBX, which is now known as the ‘550’. It’s much more aggressive and, to my eyes at least, much easier on the eye. Maybe the grille is a bit much, but as DBXs go, this is the goldYetstandard.whilethe exterior is vastly different, the interior is much the same as before. Sure, there’s a new driving mode selector and some new buttons for various suspension and exhaust settings, but it’s largely the same as before. Which means you get some lovely leather upholstery and a navigation system more or less lifted from Mercedes-Benz. Perhaps it isn’t the greatest infotainment screen in the world – there’s quite a fiddly laptop-style touchpad to control it with – but it looks good and it works well. The big surprise is the space. The boot measures 632 litres, which means there’s more space in the Aston Martin than in a Lamborghini Urus or a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. Of course, all three are more than capable of carrying your holiday luggage, but the Aston is still a very practical thing. It’s spacious in the cabin, too. Carrying four adults is no hardship, and all the luxury features you expect are present andThat’scorrect.partly because, despite the DBX707’s sporting intent, the engineers were adamant that the high-performance version should lose none of the standard car’s capability on- or off-road. Although it’s clearly much faster, Aston Martin decided it should be just as comfortable as the standard DBX and just as good over rough terrain. That meant the ground clearance would have to remain unchanged in normal and off-road modes, while the 707 can also be specified with a tow bar for customers who

Or Whichboth.iswhy in its ‘standard’ setting, known as GT mode, the 707 doesn’t feel especially sporty. When you start off, it’s every bit as comfortable and as approachable as its less powerful sister, but ramping it up into the sportier settings allows the car to bare its teeth. The engine note becomes more aggressive, turning the V8 engine from a snoring guard dog to a snarling wolf, and the car becomes more responsive. Prodding the throttle will lead to an instant surge forwards, while the steering and brakes feel sharper and more direct. The suspension gets stiffer, too, giving the DBX greater control of its bulk. Even when you corner hard, the body doesn’t wallow or lean excessively, although there’s more pitch and roll than you’d find in a Lamborghini Urus.

But grip is plentiful and cornering speeds are still immense. It feels more like a GT car than an SUV. It rides like one too. The Urus is stiff and unyielding on anything but the smoothest road surface, but the DBX707 just glides over the bumps. Even when you switch into one of the sportier settings, Aston’s engineers decided the 707 should lose none of the DBX’s refinement, and they have achieved that brilliantly. Whether you want to drive fast or cruise around, the DBX707 is properly capable, and that makes it a better all-rounder than pretty much anything else out there. We’re lucky to have a slew of great luxury super-SUVs to choose from at the moment. The Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT is one of the best, as is the Lamborghini Urus, while the new Range Rover Sport looks likely to be quite spectacular. The DBX707, however, eclipses pretty much all comers. It may not have the breathtaking cornering ability of the Urus or the cabin quality of the Bentley Bentayga, but when it comes to performance and driving, the 707 has only one rival: the Porsche. I’ve spent all month wondering which one I’d choose, and I still can’t make my mind up.

You might even wish to consider how you can incorporate some of the latest flooring trends into your home! We spoke to Leigh Price, Co-Director of Real Stone, Tile & Bathroom to get his insight into the latest on-trend flooring options.

With so many different types, colours, and materials to choose from, it can be difficult to know where to start. Most people want a floor which exudes style and quality but is also cost effective and durable. It’s important, too, to think about how your flooring will work with the rest of your interior design choices.

Large Format Tiles

Leigh Price, Co-Director of Real Stone, Tile & Bathroom gives his insight into the latest on-trend flooring

Top tip - try to match your grout colour as closely as you possibly can with your tiles; the less visible your grout is, the more your flooring will appear as one big continuous surface. Kerakoll recently expanded their offering to include 50 colours of grout, which are all available at Real Stone, Tile & Bathroom, so now there really is a grout colour for every tile!

F LOOR I NG T R END S 2 0 22 120X120GREY,INTILESTONE-EFFECTSAVOYBLUEFLAVIKER therutlandmagazine.co.uk

80 F looring is the foundation of any room, and it is important to choose wisely, as good quality flooring should last for many years before needing to be replaced.

Large format tiles have grown hugely in popularity in recent years and are great for creating that seamless look. With minimal grout lines, bigger tiles contribute to the feel of an open, uninterrupted expanse, and cleverly create the illusion of more space. If you are working with a smaller room, I would definitely recommend considering this option!

Due to their incredible functionality and durability, porcelain tiles have long been a popular flooring choice. Boasting many benefits, porcelain tiles are highly resistant to wear and tear, are great for high traffic areas, and are super easy to look after. Also, unlike ceramic, porcelain is classed as impervious, meaning it is extremely water resistant which makes it a great flooring choice for bathrooms or kitchens.  Available in so many different colours, shapes, and sizes, you can now even get highly realistic wood-effect porcelain tiles for a beautiful, long-lasting flooring option.  Many of my customers love the low maintenance of this new style; there is no need to varnish, seal or treat porcelain tiles, and there is no danger of the colour fading or warping, which can be a worry with real wooden floors.

TILEFOGRE_TOURX20FLAVIKER

Flaviker has a beautiful wood-effect porcelain tile collection, which presents a fantastic imitation of wood without the impracticalities and limitations of the real thing. Whilst wood is susceptible to water and stains, wood-effect tiles repel moisture and debris, and any grime or stains can be easily wiped away. Porcelain will not swell or shrink in warm or cold weather, making the practical nature of wood-effect tiles the ideal long-term choice for homeowners. Perfect for bringing warmth into a room, wood-effect flooring is, in my opinion, very versatile as it pairs perfectly with fittings and fixtures of any colour.

Bringing the Outside In Indoor outdoor tiles are another popular trend, that really help you make the most of your living space, due to their ability to open up a home and create a seamless transition from inside to out. It doesn’t matter if you have a small garden, a small roof terrace or a large sprawling garden, using the same gorgeous tiled flooring throughout creates a desirable, modern aesthetic and truly expands your living space outwards. There are many different indoor outdoor tiles to choose from to suit your needs. Flaviker, for example, have a stunning outdoor tile range called the X20 collection, which are 20 mm thick outdoor porcelain paving tiles, inspired by the materials from Flaviker’s other popular ranges. Personally, I think these tiles are a great choice as they are resistant to high load and stress, and can withstand the most severe atmospheric conditions.

X20 is ideal for use in heavy foot traffic areas including gardens, terraces, balconies, and swimming pool surrounds.

Dulux’s 2022 Colour of the Year is Bright Skies, and we are definitely anticipating this invigorating, light and airy shade cropping up a lot this year. Said to bring a breath of fresh air, this palette introduces brightness and will certainly inspire interior decorating dreams! This beautiful sky-blue shade is also soft enough to be used in patterned floor tiles, without appearing too busy. Bold & Bright

More and more of my customers wanting to achieve maximum impact are bringing green and blue tones into their home, which are very on-trend at the moment. Too much strong colour can be overwhelming though, so we often see people opting for a bright feature floor or feature wall, paired with more muted tones throughout the rest of the room.

The Rebel Emerald porcelain tile, which really stands out for its visually striking aesthetic with a stylish, oxidised metal appearance, is a great option for those wanting to go bolder with their interior choices. However, if you prefer a more subtle incorporation of colour, there are plenty of options to choose from such as neutral toned marble floor tiles enhanced with rich, colourful veins of varying hues. Marble is an age-old classic which guarantees a glamorous and sophisticated effect when introduced to any room of the home, and with lots of incredibly realistic marble-effect tiles on the market.

£75 PALM ETCHED WINE GLASS,

A quick look at this curated tablescape and you will see a running theme: the colours green and blue. There’s the blue of the linen napkins and the upholstered dining chairs, the combination of colours in the Hydrangea birds fabric which upholsters the chair, the flowers and the fallen cooking apples, and of course the blue glass of the Zelda lamp. However, the key to a tablescape’s fluidity is not only the décor but the food and drinks themselves.

This part is the most fun but also tends to be the moment I realise I’ve run out of time, so it’s carried out at high speed. Picking out the finishing touches to your aesthetic is where you can really get creative.

Our columnist Elizabeth Stanhope shares her 3 golden top tips for setting an inspiring table and getting creative at mealtimes

• LENS TUMBLERS, SET OF

First, let the food lead the way, what are you planning on cooking, could the dish’s heritage dictate the setting? What colours does the food bring to the table and how does it make you feel to eat it; what is the mood of the evening? Let the food be the starting point for your tablescape. Layer it up Layering is a great décor hack you can use all over the home –from piling cushions and throws on your sofa, and varying textures on your bed, to building up your dinner table. Select the accessories you fancy using and get creating, you may have been to the market that day and bought some lovely flowers or alternatively, pick some foliage from the garden and simply arrange it in vases of various sizes. Then, think about how to layer; begin with a tablecloth, add a table runner, your plates, cutlery and glassware, and pick out some candles and candleholders – all of these create depth and interest.

What are you cooking?

MIAMI - CAPITAL OF LATIN AMERICA Located in Miami this wonderful house by Pepe Calderin is a dream home, facing one of the most luxurious marinas in the city, it presents an incredible view. Miami is known for its tropical climate, warm most of the year, without major fluctuations, perfect to live and also to spend a beautiful long vacation. Located in a quiet area, this house is close to major business centres as well as nightlife venues, with easy access to beautiful beaches. This city is host and home to many major world companies, economically very developed is a place for those who can, and this house can. Inspired by the elegance and light of Miami contrasted with the eccentricity of the designer Pepe Calderin we can check out the best of both worlds.

88

Pepe Calderin is a Cuban Interior Designer who has lived in Miami for over 30 years. At the age of 21 he lost his way and his career and found himself working for an Architecture and Interior Design firm as an errand boy where he began to learn how to read plans and help designers with their different tasks. Years later, after working as a designer for the company, he teamed up with the architect who headed the firm to create Levine Calderin Associates which later became Pepe Calderin Design once his former partner retired.

LIVING ROOM

“A space has no limits and has unlimited possibilities”. His team includes five outstanding professionals who strive daily to create open and dynamic environments that connect with their clients, making each project a reflection of the client’s personality and lifestyle. Pepe comments, “My priority is making my clients part of the process to really understand their needs and to have their styles be part of the process which always leads me to challenge myself in the process of creating the spaces. Thinking out of my box is the key to every project”. HOME Pepe embarked on this adventure and designed this beautiful house in Miami — “Creating this project was so much fun. This was a project to think out of the box and manifest how great and limitless a space can be. Being free and having an open mind and heart for every project is my main creative process. I open myself to the unknown”, stated Pepe. Taking a short tour of this house composed of two bedrooms for children and the master bedroom, with a kitchen accompanied by the dining room, living room plus the family room and an office, still presents us with a cute playroom for children, a bar area with pool table and a cinema. Throughout the house we can see that art is highly valued, we can see statuettes, several paintings and decor that are authentic works of art. All products in this project were meticulously chosen, and are of excellent quality and finish, with international luxury brands such as Essential Home, DelightFULL and Mid Century Club.

Starting with the living room, we see a huge rug in shades of green with a snake pattern contrasting with the black of the Marco armchairs and the white of the Fitzgerald modular sofa, highlighting the golds of the centre table that give a glamorous touch to the room. Fitzgerald was the perfect choice for this living room because it is completely adaptable to the measurements of the spaces. It is the perfect modular sofa that can be the true shapeshifter. Rounded and oversized, with a low backrest and a cockpit structure, the new version of the Fitzgerald sofa by Studiopepe is modular in shape, colour and design, providing therutlandmagazine.co.uk

90 individual comfort like no other. With the same Italian architectural inspiration, the sectional module series can be arranged in virtually any desired shape for any space.

FAMILY ROOM A room dedicated to the family, where socialising and entertainment are enjoyed. In lighter tones than we have seen, we have in the foreground the beige colour with a touch of peach colour in the bench and armchairs. This room has a cleaner look, perfect for the whole family to sit and be in harmony.

DINING ROOM In the dining room, gold tones predominate, both in the Lane suspension lamp by DelightFULL and in the Monocles sideboard by Essential Home, which contrasts with the black of the Collins dining chairs. Highlights include the Monocles, a piece full of history, inspired by the Bond film. With its solid walnut wood frames and gilded brass legs, it is the ideal piece for retro lovers and Mid-Century style admirers. “A space has no boundaries and has endless possibilities”, Pepe Calderin KITCHEN Again in golden tones, with red accents, this kitchen is incredibly modern and current. With Kelly bar chairs, best sellers from Essential Home, who wouldn’t want to enjoy this kitchen? Inspired by the sculpted arches of the bar in the classic movie Casablanca, it is an unforgettable international piece, besides being stylish, it was made to be comfortable and to withstand long periods of sitting.

MASTER BEDROOM Going through to the master bedroom, we can see a different environment from the other areas we have seen so far, we see a room in darker and cleaner tones, without big patterns and colours. Pepe opted for a palette of blue tones combined with whites and golds. The bed made especially for this project was inspired by the Loren armchair from Essentia Home, lit by Gallianos suspension lamps and the Karlotta armchair designed by Karim Rashid.

OFFICE Finally, we have the office, a more professional place where you can keep all the household distractions outside the door. It’s a very spacious office, with two beautiful statues created from scratch on purpose for this project. Accompanied by the Minelli armchair, a classic-looking armchair that is both stunning and timeless, proving that Mid Century style hasn’t gone out of style yet. www.essentialhome.eu

We love this stunning piece from Ercol. Romana’s style is modern, including cabinets and sideboards with a low contemporary outline; but with subtle detailing and soft shapes, the range remains understated. Detailing includes shaped legs, whose easy organic lines belie the complexity of manufacture. The shaped edge to the top panels echoes the softness of Ercol’s vintage mid-century designs, but cut into the carcass it gives a streamlined feel to the silhouette. A high level of British craftsmanship is used in creating the organic shapes in the range. Complex construction is further evidenced in flush, sculpted curves across joints and in the close fit of the curved tops into the recessed tops of the cabinet carcasses.
