My life ...

How would you describe yourself?

Unbelievably good-looking and a paragon of virtue! Well, you never see yourself as others do, of course, but I have a good sense of humour, obviously(!) and I’m honest, hard-working and earnest, and I strive to give exemplary service.

Where is home? And work?

I was born and lived for my first 18 years in Banbury in Oxfordshire, but now, home is South Luffenham in Rutland. Our gallery is in Hope’s Yard in Uppingham, but when I’m not there (Wednesdays and Saturdays) I work in my big studio at the end of the garden, or my even bigger office in the great outdoors.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I wanted to be a vet up to the age of 14, then a racing driver (dad was a motor racing photographer), then a golf professional, and I was a golf pro for 12 years upon leaving school in 1972, before painting pictures for a living – still looking for a proper job!

Name a few of your favourite places to be...

I love Rutland, Derbyshire, The Cotswolds, the Lake District, Scotland, Wales, the West Country – I’m not a great foreign traveller. I’m lucky, in that being a painter, the British Isles has a wealth of material for me. Jane and I love going to various coffee shops, like 5 Elements in Uppingham, the View at Rutland Nursery near Manton and Picks Barn Café at Lyndon. We love eating out, too, at various restaurants, like 23 in Uppingham, Don Paddy’s, and many other eateries.

What or who inspires you?

The British landscape inspires me every day, regardless of the weather. A damp day in winter by the River

Welland can be just as inspiring as a bright, sunny day in a field with straw bales. I’ve been painting for a living for 40 years now, but I never get painter’s block – there is so much out there to paint, and I need to live forever to paint it all! Many fellow professional artists, alive and dead, inspire me in the way they portray certain subjects, so painting is a life-long learning experience.

What was the last gift you gave someone?

I bought my Jane a big bunch of yellow and orange roses a couple of weeks ago when she was feeling a bit down and seeing her face light up was lovely.

Tell us a secret/fun fact?

I can’t tell you any secret, otherwise it will no longer be a secret, with hundreds of thousands of your readers finding out! Makes you all think, hmm, wonder what he’s hiding… Not sure whether this is a fun fact, but

12
PETER BARKER, ARTIST AND GALLERY OWNER AT PETER BARKER FINE ART
therutlandmagazine.co.uk
...there is so much out there to paint, and I need to live forever to paint it all!

I once finished a large Pastel painting, was really pleased with it…propped it up on an easel in the studio, and inexplicably shook a towel and managed to flick off most of what I had just painted, necessitating re-painting almost the entire piece. One of those I daren’t open my eyes moments.

Who or what would you place in room 101?

How long have you got? Button-flies – solving a problem that doesn’t exist, I find infuriating! In the last couple of years – wokery!

Your mastermind subject?

Probably pop music of the ‘60s and ‘70s. If I get through the first round, then perhaps golf’s major championships of the ‘60s.

What’s been your biggest life lesson?

To talk to your grandparents whilst you still have them. My maternal grandad fought in the trenches in the First World War, and I know almost no details. When you’re young, you’re not interested, and I am so sorry that I never asked him all about it when I was older, before he died. And just to speak to people about their early lives – it would be fascinating to hear all about it now, but it’s too late. So, to anyone reading this, ask your grandparents about their childhoods and working lives and write it down – those details might not seem precious now, but they will be gold when you’re older. peterbarkerfineart.co.uk

Rutland would not be known as the “county of good taste” if it was not abundant in local produce, fantastic pubs and wild, seasonal fare

At this time of year, the fields, hedgerows and woodlands are filled with nature’s bounty and across the county farmers, herbalists, chefs and producers are reaping the rewards of working with local and seasonal produce.

Because of this, Rutland and the surrounding area is a hot spot for some incredible businesses that prefer to do things the “old-fashioned way”; traditionally and with a passion for the products they create.

Megan Allen has spoken to some of them about what makes the early autumn in Rutland so bountiful.

Manton Hollow Cider, Manton

While Manton Hollow Cider has only officially launched in the last couple of months, it has already been a couple of years in the making. That’s because founder Charlie Udale has chosen a traditional method of making cider.

“Every part of the process is slow because it tastes better,” he explains.

“We wait until the apples fall on the ground and then keep them in the shed for a couple of months before pressing them and using a natural fermentation process.” The method is something that Charlie stumbled upon almost by accident a few years ago.

“I came home from London and it was autumn and all the Bramleys were going to waste.

“I built a press and we drank as much as we could but the juice started fermenting and it made horrendous cider.”

But it sparked an interest and Charlie had soon planted cider apples on his family farm in Manton, and sourced a number of varieties from local orchards in Lyndon and Preston as well. From harvests in 2021 and 2022, he has made six-thousand litres of cider, which are now starting to hit the shelves and be sold in shops and pubs across the county, with both sweet and dry options available. He is also hosting events at the Cidery over the summer.

MANTON HOLLOW CIDER

Castle Chase, Ayston

Traditional methods are certainly key when it comes to farming and food production in the county, too. Sarah Bell who manages a 1,000-acre mixed farm near Ayston is aiming to produce net zero beef in the next few years by combining traditional methods passed down through the generations with modern techniques.

They currently produce lamb, beef, wheat, barley, beans and oats on a closed-loop system, meaning everything they feed their livestock is grown on the farm.

Sarah said: “The trajectory is that more farmers are moving back to traditional methods to reduce carbon emissions.

“Livestock is essential to managing the countryside. Where there is livestock there are insects which then attract birds and other wildlife. We haven’t used insecticides for three years.”

Sarah says soil management is important to how they run their farm, looking at methods such as cover cropping, crop rotation and spreading manure to put nutrients back into the soil and ensuring it is disturbed as little as possible. She added: “Very little changes. We are still doing the same thing that has been done for years.” For more information or to order some beef visit castlechase.co.uk

And while the early harvest this year was blighted by the unpredictable British summer weather, chefs are already looking forward to making the most of the best British produce.

The King’s Arms, Wing

When chef Jimmy Goss arrived in Rutland 20 years ago, fresh from the kitchens of Scandinavia, he couldn’t believe that eateries in the area were not making the most of what was on their doorstep. While sustainability, local produce and low food miles have become increasingly important to many over the last decade or so, it is something Jimmy has advocated at The King’s Arms in Wing since he took the reins. It’s not unusual to see squirrel and rabbit on the menu in the autumn, along with local beef, lamb, pheasant, partridge and venison, most of which is butchered, processed and cured on-site where Jimmy also has his own smokehouse.

“It’s important to us that we play a part in the conservation of the beautiful area we live in,” Jimmy explains. “Especially when we serve nonnative species which are a threat to our native ones, such as grey squirrel, muntjac and sika deer.

“During game season we use produce from the local shoots and are a big part of the community as they come here for their dinner afterwards.” Jimmy also uses tried and tested methods and his own experience to produce the tastiest meat he can, as he is a huge advocate for local game and wants to encourage people who have been put off it before to try again.

“We love pheasant and partridge but we try not to leave it hanging too long as it can get too ‘gamey’,” he explains. “We work with it quickly and have seen the results. We choose the older, fattier birds for our roasts and use the younger

ones for pate or curing. The rest goes into stock. We don’t waste anything.”

The Olive Branch, Clipsham

On the other side of the county, The Olive Branch in Clipsham is also famed for its local and seasonal menu, a lot of which is grown on-site. The pub has its own polytunnel and garden where the chefs grow salads, fruits, vegetables, herbs and edible flowers for their menu. Co-owner Ben Jackson said: “It is inspirational for the kitchen team to utilise what is growing.

“We have always bought locally as much as possible to support other businesses and lower food miles and it adds variety for our customers as well.”

While planting is staggered to lengthen the season of most of the salads and vegetables grown on-site, in late summer and early autumn, fruits such as pumpkin and other squash will feature on the menu and grapes will be made into sorbets and chutneys for their cheese board. Ben added: “Our ethos has always been to serve seasonal and fresh produce and by growing our own, we are able to do just that.”

Rosemary Jameson, Preserver, Burley-on-the-Hill

Growing your own is certainly something that more and more people seem to be doing since the Covid-19 pandemic and master preserver, Rosemary Jameson who is based in Burley-on-the-Hill is on a mission to teach growers the traditional ways of preserving their homegrown harvests. Through her online classes, she teaches everything from jam making to

pressure canning methods and discusses the importance of traditional preserving techniques. “The ultra-processed food we eat is altering the way we eat food. We need to be more aware of what we are eating and using without taking any shortcuts,” she said.

Throughout the year, Rosie records and uploads online preserving classes to Rosie’s Preserving School, many of which are free to watch, ensuring she uses what is in season at the time and giving step by step instructions on how to preserve them - from herb salts to marmalades. But as with all growing seasons, preserving is affected by the weather.

“It has been a tough year this year,” she explains. “We’re about three weeks to a month behind on everything growing in the garden because we’ve had a dry spring and a wet summer. Everything is growing like mad but there is no produce.” With apples, plums, greengages and damsons coming into fruit at this time of the year, Rosie says it is a good time to be making jellies and chutneys, as well as using up the last of seasonal produce such as courgettes and runner beans in piccalilli. She added: “People are starting to pay more attention to what they are eating and the benefits of preserving, such as the economical and sustainable impact.”

For more information visit rosiemakesjam.com

Fenton’s Herbology, Stamford

For those who are interested in preserving and want to take it one step further by foraging for ingredients, Nicola Fenton who runs Fenton’s Herbology in Stamford hosts walks and workshops to help you to identify and make the most of nature’s bounty throughout the season. She said: “It is a lovely activity to do and is something our ancestors knew how to do. They would go for walks and know what was there and what could be used. It is a legacy.”

22

FENTON’S HERBOLOGY
ROSEMARY JAMESON

Nicola’s workshops particularly focus on the medicinal uses for certain fruits and herbs that can be found in the hedgerows at this time of year. She added: “Blackberries are such a great source of Vitamin C and can be used for so much more than crumbles.

“They can be used to make cordials and syrups, vinegars and gummies to top up your vitamin levels over the winter.”

Other great sources of Vitamin C are elderberries and rosehips which can also be used to make syrups and even stirred into honey. Nicola also recommends making tea from hawthorne and even has a recipe for hawthorn ketchup. She is hosting a workshop, Your Garden the Medicine Cabinet, at Barnsdale Gardens on 30 September and a forage and lunch at Burrough Court on 15 September. For more information and updates follow Nicola on Instagram @fentonsherbology

The Grainstore Brewery, Oakham

Last but certainly not least, hops are in season at this time of year and The Grainstore Brewery in Oakham is one of only a few breweries in the country that still uses the traditional method of gravitational brewing to make its award-winning real ales. Visitors can take a tour of the brewery where they are shown how the beer is made and what ingredients are used to create each of the unique flavours, including British hops.

Co-director Peter Atkinson said: “While a lot of breweries now use pumps to speed up the

brewing process, we prefer to use gravity to make our beers. This not only makes better beer but also reduces the amount of water we use to make each pint we produce.

“We go down to Kent to source our hops and while they are not grown locally, our by-products go into the local food chain, either as ingredients for local bread or to farms for the livestock.”

THE GRAINSTORE BREWERY

A Spy Among Friends

Anna Maxwell Martin returns to our screens as MI5 interrogator Lily Thomas in ITV’s hottest new drama based on the best-selling book written by Ben Macintyre

Based on the New York Times best-selling book written by Ben Macintyre, the six episode ITV series dramatises the true story of Nicholas Elliott and Kim Philby, two British spies and lifelong friends. Philby was the most notorious British defector and Soviet double agent in history. This is a story of intimate duplicity; of loyalty, trust and treachery. Philby’s deeply personal betrayal, uncovered at the height of the Cold War, resulted in the gutting of British and American Intelligence.

Motherland and Line of Duty actress Anna Maxwell Martin plays Lily Thomas, a debriefer for the domestic security service, MI5. A working-class woman from the north of England, she is a fish out of water in Elliott and Philby’s world of secrets and gentlemen’s clubs.

What first attracted you to A Spy Among Friends?

It was about the people really before I read the actual project. I knew of the director Nick Murphy and his work, which was excellent. And

Alexander Cary, who is our writer and showrunner, is incredibly talented - a brilliant writer, a brilliant showrunner and he’d been on Homeland. And because Damian Lewis originated the show with Alex he was obviously attached to it. So it was the people before anything else, and then I read it and the part was just so good.

Were you already familiar with the true story behind the show?

Yes, I was a bit. actually. I know a member of the Philby family and my late husband was obsessed with Ben Macintyre’s book and with spying and

24
Feature | The RUTLAND Magazine
therutlandmagazine.co.uk

prisoner of war camps and that kind of thing, so we had all these books in the house. I hadn’t read them but after I got the part, I delved into them.

How would you describe Lily as a character and her role in the narrative?

She’s really tenacious and she’s very front-footed without being demonstratively so. She’s very clever, she is incredibly good at her job and reading a situation and adapting and doing what she’s supposed to do, which is extracting information from people. That’s what she’s exceptionally good at and I think probably she’s sent in because they think she’ll be disregarded. And actually, what’s nice about the relationship between her and Elliott is that they disregard one another at first, then as the story unfolds they have a newfound respect for one another.

As a fictitious character, what does she add to the show?

She’s sort of instrumental to it. Alex talks about this so I’m not blowing my own trumpet by saying it. He talks about needing to invent a character as a way into the narrative. He came up with Lily because he had to have someone who could interrogate Elliott and his version of events, so he could see it unfold through his eyes.

Is playing fictional characters more freeing for you as an actress?

I’ve played lots of real people and I can’t think that I’ve ever felt particularly stifled by playing a real person as opposed to a not-real person. You don’t think of it in those terms. You just serve your writer, really, and the character you’re playing. So it’s irrelevant whether they’re real or not real. You just have to have specificity in what you’re doing, be active in all the scenes, listen and respond, and do it according to who you’re playing.

25
therutlandmagazine.co.uk

How was it filming those intense interrogation scenes with Damian?

I love all that. I feel like I’ve done a proper day’s work whilst also having a laugh with a lovely crew and lovely people. I relish it. It’s the same as it was on Line of Duty as well. I just think ‘Oh my God there’s loads of pages of chatting away’. I mean, as an actor why wouldn’t you love it? With Lily, she wants to be the victor in that room. She wants to go back to her bosses with all the information, so she’s trying to find every single tactic to outmanoeuvre him. It’s just brilliant to play a part like that and do those scenes. It’s a total gift for an actor.

Why do you think audiences love a good spy story?

I think we love suspense, we love jeopardy, and I think that what we really need in storytelling is simply a good story. And so often that is there with a spy story. That said, the spy story here is a hook, really. It’s

brilliantly written by Alex and delivered by Nick, and pivotally it’s about a relationship between Philby and Elliott and the relationship between Elliot and Lily and what they are and what they mean. Most importantly, I suppose, is that relationship between Philby and Elliott, which is incredibly complex and it’s about two men who have to re-evaluate who they are. I think that’s what the story is really about. It’s like a bromance gone horribly wrong. It’s a heartbreak, you know? It’s a sort of heartbreak story for me rather than a spy story.

What did you most enjoy about playing Lily?

It’s really great to play a part like Lily. She’s an absolute badass and they are the best people to play. She’s a badass with a heart, who has a journey, and that’s the best thing. But really the best thing is always if you’re on a nice set with nice people and they’re good fun and kind. That set was that at a difficult time in my life and they really were the loveliest, kindest, funniest people to be around. You can play a great character but you don’t want to be surrounded by horrible people while you’re doing it. So as I say, there’s the part and then there’s the people, which is probably often more important for me than anything else. And they were talented. They were so brilliant, funny, kind and so mega-talented. It was one of the most talented crews I’ve ever worked with. Every department was just incredible. We had a lovely time. B uilt to l ast : R olex Watch s e R vicing at g oldsmiths

From adjusting the length of a bracelet to carrying out a complete overhaul, the Rolex After Sales Service at Goldsmiths Highcross in Leicester ensures your Rolex watch can be handed down from one generation to the next

Rolex watches are designed and built to last. Hans Wilsdorf instilled a philosophy of perpetual excellence on which the brand has forged its reputation. From the outset, the founder of Rolex established a network of watchmaking workshops around the world, tasked with ensuring that all of the brand’s watches could receive the best possible servicing and so preserve their excellent technical performance and a pristine appearance. As a result, there is no limit on how long a Rolex watch can keep working, being handed down from one generation to the next, and living several lives.

The watchmakers in the

Rolex World Service workshops are specially trained by the company so as to ensure the quality and consistency of servicing operations worldwide. They perform various types of procedures in adherence with Rolex standards, thereby guaranteeing the performance of the brand’s watches over time.

Quality and Reliability

A visionary entrepreneur, Hans Wilsdorf was convinced that every Rolex watch should be reliable and durable. This philosophy gave rise to the Oyster case, a paragon of robustness that offers optimum protection for the watch’s

movement. Hans Wilsdorf’s foresight also led him to promptly establish a network of dedicated after-sales service workshops in the countries where the brand was present. The initiative allowed Rolex to guarantee that each watch could receive the best possible servicing at any time and so preserve its excellent performance and impeccable finish. The workshops operated by Rolex World Service fulfil the mission of ensuring the exceptional durability and reliability of Rolex watches and providing high-quality service to the brand’s customers.

To guarantee service quality, all the watchmakers working at Rolex after-sales service centres have followed training given by the brand. This ensures that the same quality of servicing is provided in all of the centres around the world.

Each after-sales service workshop meets the standards set by Rolex with respect to the quality of its infrastructure and equipment as well as the expertise of its personnel. For maximum efficiency, after-sales service procedures are planned for during product development so that new watches can be serviced easily and with optimal results.

Following maintenance in a Rolex World Service workshop, each watch also benefits from a two-year international service guarantee covering the parts and labour.

The availability of parts and labour is assured for every watch for at least 35 years following its withdrawal from the catalogue. At the end of this period, if parts are no longer available, they can be recreated by the Restoration Atelier.

A Worldwide Presence

Rolex World Service is present on all continents thanks to service centres – watchmaking workshops that are based at official retailers of the brand or the regional affiliates’ offices. These workshops each have one or more Rolex-certified watchmakers, who alone are authorised to carry out after-sales servicing on watches produced by the brand. They uphold Rolex’s aim of providing exceptional service at all times and no matter the condition of the watch. Maintenance is carried out according to guidelines and the brand’s requirements – just as in manufacturing, the servicing of a timepiece requires the highest level of expertise. Depending on the age of the watch, servicing takes place either at an official retailer, at an affiliate, or at Rolex World Headquarters in Geneva

A Variety of Services

Goldsmiths Highcross utilise the group’s state of the art Rolex Service Centre to offer different types of servicing operations. A full service, for example, involves the complete overhaul of the watch movement, case and bracelet. Specific operations are also available, such as adjusting the length of the bracelet or refinishing the case.

32
therutlandmagazine.co.uk

Full Servicing

The servicing of a Rolex watch comprises several steps requiring the use of specific tools and instruments that are tested and sometimes even developed by the brand. Once the watch has been received, assessed and the customer has approved the service estimate, the watchmaker begins work by separating the bracelet from the case and delicately removing the movement, still fitted with its dial and hands. From that point on, the movement, case and bracelet follow separate servicing paths.

The dial and the hands are detached from the movement, which is itself completely dismantled. Each component is carefully examined to determine whether it still meets Rolex requirements – if this is not the case, it is replaced with a new part from the manufacture in Bienne, where Rolex movements are produced. All components are cleaned in an ultrasonic bath to remove all traces of impurities, before being dried. The movement is reassembled piece by piece in a set order, and lubrication is applied. After making the first adjustments to the precision of the movement, the watchmaker then refits the dial and hands.

The case is also disassembled, and the parts, whether made from Oystersteel, 18 ct gold or 950 platinum, are individually re-polished or satin-finished by hand. These delicate finishing processes, which require great dexterity, restore the case’s sheen and lustre, whilst removing any marks or scratches. The seals are replaced, then

the crystal, bezel and middle case are reassembled.

The bracelet receives a similar treatment to the case. Each link is painstakingly polished or satin-finished according to its original finish. The bracelet is then thoroughly cleaned.

The watchmaker gently puts the movement back into the case and measures its accuracy once again, making any adjustments necessary for it to achieve the expected chronometric performance. This is followed by a precision test lasting a minimum of 24 hours. Next, the case is pressure-tested in water. With the waterproofness test passed and the bracelet refitted, the watch is ready for a final control – its rate and functions are checked, and its aesthetics verified to ensure an impeccable finish.

At the end of the process, the timepiece is placed in a pouch designed to protect it while it is not being worn, or during travel. The watch benefits from a two-year international guarantee covering the parts and labour. Goldsmiths Leicester (Highcross). Highcross Shopping Centre, Leicester, LE1 4FT

C RU I SE collection

Aconstellation of places that spark emotions – this is what Mexico is to Maria Grazia Chiuri. A “place of the soul,” just as it was for surrealist artists. The emblematic figure of Frida Kahlo continues to offer a powerful connection to this culture, celebrated at the heart of the Dior Cruise 2024 collection. The Mexican artist transcended her body through her clothes, which became representation, proclamation, protest, and affirmation. Like a precious jewel case for a broken body, a cocoon-case concealing a butterfly meta-morphed into a motif unfolding

in multiple shades and forms, through a series of prints. The captivating beauty of fragility is further enhanced by the variety of cotton, hemp and silk lace selected, by the meticulous designs of the collars sublimating jersey and black velvet, and by irresistibly precious jacquards. For this new line Maria Grazia Chiuri has once again forged strong ties with local artisans: original embroideries, co-creations crafted with their ateliers, notably adorn dresses and shirts. The story of a femininity that is constructed by a relationship with the natural environment, in a balance of engagement and light-heartedness.

Keen Sportsman makes Speedy Recovery after Hip Replacement

Andrew got back to doing what he loves, just three months after hip replacement surgery at Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital. Now he’s feeling the same pain in his other hip, he knows exactly where to go for his second hip replacement.

Whether it’s skiing, cycling or representing England in the All England Championships for badminton, keen sportsman Andrew is no stranger to the wear and tear an active lifestyle can have on your body. But like many things, we tend to soldier on and push through the pain. When a friend noticed the discomfort Andrew was in just from walking, it motivated him to call Nuffield Health and speak with Mr Ashwin Kulkarni, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Leicester Hospital.

“Mr Kulkarni understood that recovery was key for me, less recovery time meant more time doing the things I love, like cycling. He recommended the

SuperPath® surgery which is a minimally invasive hip replacement that didn’t require cutting into the muscle,” says Andrew.

Minimally invasive replacement hip surgery reduces how deep the surgeon creates an incision and rather than cut muscles to gain access to the hip joint, the softtissue is simply moved aside, which reduces trauma to the soft-tissue around the hip.

“I’d heard that someone who also underwent the same surgery walked in unaided for their next review with the consultant just two weeks after their super path hip operation and given my competitive nature, I was determined to match that record,” Andrew explains.

Almost 12-weeks after Andrew’s surgery and physiotherapy treatments at Leicester Fitness and Wellbeing Centre, he was back on the bike and training for his next cycling challenge.

“The connected health aspect that Nuffield Health offer played a contributing factor into my

42
therutlandmagazine.co.uk
Wellness | The RUTLAND Magazine

recovery, I saw a great physio in the gym at Leicester and carried on the exercises at home daily to accelerate my recovery,” says Andrew.

Since the surgery Andrew’s travelled far and wide raising money and awareness for some incredible charities along the way. Last year he joined 60 fellow riders to Ireland and they cycled just under 400 miles over 4 days to raise funds for Hope Against Cancer, a local Leicestershire and Rutland cancer research charity that is close to Andrew’s heart.

Roll on six years later and many thousands of cycling miles, Andrew started to feel similar twinges of pain in his other hip. After the success of the first hip surgery he got in contact with Mr Kulkarni to discuss the symptoms he was experiencing. An MRI revealed that Andrew’s hip joint had worn away and the bone was rubbing against bone which was causing a great deal of pain.

Mr Kulkarni explains, “When articular cartilage on the surface of a hip joint is worn out, it can lead to arthritis. In arthritic joints, sensitive exposed bone under the cartilage grinds against opposing side bone,

creating significant pain and as a result disability to perform activities.”

“A hip replacement, replaces this bad surface with smooth artificial surface, often made from ceramic and special plastic. This takes the pain away and improves quality of life”.

“Having my hip replaced and the increased mobility it rewarded me, was one of the best things I’ve done. I was so impressed with the whole experience that I’ve booked to have surgery on my second hip with Mr Kulkarni later this year” says Andrew.

We wish Andrew another speedy recovery and look forward to hearing about his next cycling challenge!

C elebrating 50 Years of H egart Y

A lot has changed since 1974 when Hegarty Solicitors first opened its doors in Peterborough, but the firm continues to go from strength to strength. Ahead of the 50th anniversary of the firm next year, Kally Singh, Senior Partner and Head of Dispute Resolution at Hegarty Solicitors takes a walk down memory lane and talks about what has enabled the firm to stand the test of time.

The Beginnings

I joined Hegarty Solicitors in 1990, qualifying as a solicitor in 1992 and becoming a partner in the firm in 2003. The firm, which was established by Richard Hegarty with support from members of his family in Peterborough in 1974 now has 4 offices in Peterborough, Stamford, Oakham and Market Deeping. The firm has over 90 members of staff delivering services across multiple areas of law, covering family law, residential and commercial conveyancing, wills, trusts and probate, employment and corporate law, litigation and criminal law.

At the time the Peterborough office opened in 1974, Peterborough had not seen a new firm of solicitors for some time, but the timing could not have been better with a substantial increase in the number of new homes being built in Peterborough and an influx of new residents. The firm at the time offered a handful of legal

services such as criminal defence, family law and conveyancing and quickly developed a reputation of excellence, for going above and beyond to achieve the best results possible for its clients. The firm grew organically through word of mouth referrals and client recommendations and it soon became apparent that the firm would have to expand to cope with the substantial volume of work that was coming in. The Hegarty Solicitors Stamford office opened in December 1979, following the success of the first office in Peterborough, and in 2015 opened an office in Oakham, followed by the most recent office opening in Market Deeping earlier this year. Over the almost 50 years we have been operating we have helped thousands of clients in the local area as well as further afield.

The central location of our offices in local towns means we are at the heart of the local community. We offer a full range of legal services to clients in and around the area and clients are always reassured that due to our convenient locations we are on hand whenever they should need our advice or support. Most of our staff members are from the local area and we are committed to making a positive impact on the communities we work in. We support and sponsor a number of local

48
therutlandmagazine.co.uk

community groups, clubs and events, including hosting our hugely popular Rutland Business Network to connect local businesses, which runs monthly at Rutland Hall Hotel & Spa. We also have a dedicated charity committee who organise a number of fundraising events throughout the year for a nominated local charity.

Changing with the Times

Since 1974 the firm has seen many changes, from the use of technology, to the way in which services are delivered. Hegarty Solicitors was one of the very first solicitors in the area to offer a specialised service with separate departments for each area of law to ensure that clients are represented by solicitors who are experts in their field. We also embraced change in 1986 when we published our first brochure, after law firm advertising became permitted, and we were recognised in the Solicitors Journal Awards. Since then, the legal market has changed dramatically, with advertising increasing competition and making legal services more accessible and visible to clients.

Legal Advice without the Jargon

The field of law is steeped in tradition and was recently voted as the third most jargon heavy industry, just behind IT and accountancy, but at Hegarty Solicitors our aim has always been to explain everything to our clients in plain-English and we will never try to bamboozle them with ‘legalese’. This has been a major part of our success over the years in ensuring we continue to meet and exceed clients’ expectations.

Clients’ expectations have changed dramatically in the past 50 years. Expectations of the level and speed of service are higher now due to technology allowing instantaneous communication. Clients now also have access to greater levels of information meaning they are much more knowledgeable about their situation and the services they require. It is also easier to find the relevant legal services via online search and clients can easily compare solicitor services and read online reviews to make decisions about the solicitor they choose to use.

We have evolved to meet these changing expectations

by communicating with clients via email and using video calls for client meetings where clients prefer or are short on time and unable to visit the office. We also feature calculators on our website to help clients gauge how much their case will cost for services such as conveyancing and corporate contracts and introduced an app to help clients track their conveyancing transaction every step of the way.

Delivering exceptional service to our clients is our top priority and we use Trustpilot to monitor client feedback. This also helps clients compare legal service providers to make an informed view of the level of service they can expect from us before they instruct us. I am incredibly proud of our 5-star rating on Trustpilot, which our staff have worked extremely hard to achieve, and really shows that we don’t just say we will deliver great service, our clients are the best judges of that and it is shown through our excellent reviews.

The Future

We are really excited to see what the next 50 years holds for Hegarty Solicitors following the successful launch of our new office in Market Deeping. We plan to continue to offer excellent quality legal advice to people and businesses in the local area and look forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary next year with lots of plans to celebrate with our teams and the local community.

Mermaiding in the Med

Mermaiding surfaced as the trend of summer 2023 as the magic of The Little Mermaid movie took the world by storm. A water activity using a single flipper, Mermaiding allows you to feel like a mermaid or a merman and encourages you to improve your water skills. Where better to try your hand at this trend than at one of The Little Mermaid’s filming locations in Sardinia, the breath-taking Cala Moresca. Hotel Abi d’Oru, located at the gateway of Costa Smeralda, is set on Marinella Beach, one bay over from Cala Moresca. This season they are offering the opportunity to immerse oneself into the world of The Little Mermaid, with a Mermaiding package taking guests to the film’s locations. Once there, guests are invited to don gleaming swimmable mermaid tails and feel the metamorphosis as they step into character. The trend of Mermaiding brings fantasy to life and offers an exciting escape from the ordinary. hotelabidoru.it

Combine your next big celebration with an inspiring travel experience from Phil Aird-Mash

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone birthday, anniversary, or something else entirely, there’s always a reason to explore the world.

So, if you have a big occasion coming up, why not make it really special by combining it with an experience that goes beyond your usual holiday ideas?

A rail adventure is a joyful way to celebrate, allowing you to see multiple places in one trip. I love the timeless glamour of the Venice Simplon-OrientExpress, which chugs its way through some of Europe’s most alluring cities in unrivalled style. Follow the route to Venice, perhaps combining it with a stay at Lake Como’s Grand Hotel Tremezzo. From weddings in their beautiful Winter Garden to cocktail parties along the glistening waters, it’s pure elegance.

An African safari is one of those magical experiences that every traveller should have. In the Maasai Mara, Kenya’s best-known savannah, mark a special occasion by witnessing the Great Migration, when millions of thundering wildebeest stampede by. After sighting precious wildlife in their natural habitat, you can head to the beaches

of Zanzibar or Mauritius to reflect and relax with your loved ones.

If you’re craving both adventure and culture, I recommend visiting the Himalayan paradise of Bhutan. With its soaring snow-capped mountains, strings of prayer flags and iconic sights of Tiger’s Nest Monastery and the Phobjikha Valley, there are so many unforgettable moments to treasure. I suggest a visit during the Tsechu festival celebrations, so you can watch the monks perform their traditional dances.

Finally, if you’re looking for a party to celebrate with, I couldn’t miss out on the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix! Witness the electric finale in November with our sports operator, spectatetravel.co. uk, and opt for a private hospitality suite for a VIP experience. Following the post-race concert and after-parties, jet off to the Indian Ocean for a chilled-out beach escape.

LEE KELLY, GENERAL MANAGER AT 45 PARK LANE, DORCHESTER COLLECTION

What are the benefits of your location?

As our name suggests, we are located in the heart of Mayfair on Park Lane, right opposite Hyde Park and a stone’s throw away from the buzz of the city. Our location allows guests to experience all London has to offer, with just a short walk/ drive. Whether that may be shopping on Bond Street, the shows on the West End or a little further the museums in South Kensington.

What is the most luxurious suite in the hotel?

Our most luxurious suite is The Penthouse Terrace Suite which covers the entirety of the top floor and has breathtaking panoramic 360° views of Hyde Park. With a separate living and dining room, this is a beautiful suite that feels like home. Art Deco in design, but contemporary in attitude, the room is polished with modern luxury. It is very popular among our guests, especially in the summer when guests can make the most of the wrap-around balcony.

What can you tell us about the history of the hotel?

45 Park Lane has lived various lives, including one particularly glamorous adventure as The Playboy Club. Nicknamed ‘the hutch on the park’ this was a fashionable 1960s hangout for London’s rich and famous. Originally designed as an office building by famed Bauhaus architect

Walter Gropius, it remains a landmark of London, and today, a treasured gem of Dorchester Collection

Could you tell us about the best event the hotel has hosted during your time there?

This past June 2023 two of the world’s most legendary chefs came together to host a unique culinary experience. For one night only, internationally renowned celebrity chef, Wolfgang Puck cooked with Alain Ducasse at CUT at 45 Park Lane.

The pair teamed up to create a gastronomic fusion of excellence, with each chef presenting alternate dishes to complete a tasting menu. The evening took guests on a culinary journey with exceptional pairings made to highlight the dishes created by these leading chefs. Both chefs were accompanied by their award-winning teams, with Pucks headed by executive chef, Elliott Grover at 45 Park Lane and Ducasse’s, led by Jean-Phillippe Blondet, executive chef at Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester.

How would you describe the hotel’s dining experience?

At the hotel, we now have two restaurants.

The first is CUT by Wolfgang Puck which is a fine dining American steak restaurant. It has the most vibrant blend of

66
Travel | The RUTLAND Magazine
therutlandmagazine.co.uk

a succulent menu, sleek design and fascinating artwork by Damien Hirst. Executive chef Elliott Grover offers a fresh take on the menu and celebrates locally sourced ingredients thanks to a close relationship with producers. We like to do new things at CUT, from four hands chef dinners to a new Beverly Hills Brunch, it really is non-stop there. Elliott also serves food in our art-deco BAR 45 as well as the lounge at the spa, both are slightly adapted to reflect the environment and preferences at each.

More recently, we launched Sushi Kanesaka on July 1, 2023; an intimate and traditional 13-seater Omakase counter restaurant opened at the hotel. Housed behind a discreet doorway off BAR 45, the restaurant brings the mastery of Edomae sushi in its most traditional, purest form – to London, setting a new benchmark for Omakase dining in the city.

Of all the facilities the hotel offers, which is your favourite and why?

We have a great state-of-the-art spa at 45 Park Lane with a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and hydro pool. The lounge area is the most relaxing place to just unwind and the whole area is definitely up there in terms of my favourites. However, my favourite place has to be BAR 45; it has such a comfortable feel, thanks to the Art Deco interiors, cosy armchairs and library feel. Our bar manager Enrico Perri and his team prepare some of the best cocktails in London many of them inspired by the hotel’s Art Deco heritage. We also have a rotating art programme, meaning we have new exhibitions totally transform the walls of the bar every 2-3 months our most recent exhibition featured Hormazd Narielwalla who created a body of work to commemorate HM King Charles III’s coronation. Up next, we have Jo Hummel who will be showcasing her collection ‘Somewhere here, but far away’ from July 6th to September 3rd. Her exhibition will showcase the Isle of Wight which is perfect for this time of year and will give guests a glimpse into British geography.

What makes a stay at your venue stand out from your competitors?

Our art and food offering makes us stand out the most. We have always

prided ourselves in being firmly rooted in the arts at 45 Park Lane. The exhibitions that we have hosted since opening have featured a real variety of exceptional talent, from up-and-coming artists through to big names of the art world. We are so honoured to have hosted works from David Bailey’s and Sir Peter Blake which has really driven interest in the property. The hotel will see a more interactive experience playing out across our exhibition programme.

CUT at 45 Park Lane continues to be one of the most popular steak restaurants in London and we were recently voted 12th best steak restaurant in the world by World’s Best Steak Restaurant. Our executive chef, Elliott Grover, has also made it one of the first Wolfgang Puck restaurants to introduce a variety of fish dishes to the menu, now being rolled out across the company.

We also launched CUT Out in 2020, our outdoor terrace and extension of CUT. Situated directly adjacent to the restaurant on the corner of Park Lane and Curzon Street, is accessible through the hotel’s main entrance and is open daily for lunch and dinner from 12pm. The terrace offers an additional 22 seats with a Captain’s Table, inspired by the glamorous mid-century design of a Riva yacht, which can accommodate up to six guests. The space is overlooked by the trees of Hyde Park and a sleek, frameless glazed screen creates a shelter for this light-flooded dining area, which mirrors the architectural design of 45 Park Lane. It’s the perfect oasis in the heart of Mayfair and the ideal location to enjoy our newly launched Beverly Hills Brunch.

2023 has already been an exciting year for us and we look forward to enhancing our food and beverage offering even further.

dorchestercollection.com

– Our Experience –

We have visited many London hotels but have to say 45 Park Lane is one of the best. We entered the wonderful art deco designed reception area to check in and were shown to our suite overlooking Park Lane. The suite was very generous in size making this a perfect place to stay for a long period. In the suite, there was a lovely dining area where we enjoyed our breakfast in the morning, a lounge area to relax in, a separate bedroom and two bathrooms. We dined in CUT Restaurant the popular steak house on the ground floor and it did not disappoint. The steak was divine and so was the glass of red! In the morning we enjoyed the spa, which is located lower ground floor creating a perfect peaceful oasis, a great way to start our day before heading back home.

A Modern Venetian

MASTERPIECE

Stood on the island of Giudecca, overlooking the city, Craig Hough visited Hilton Molino Stucky Venice, a former flourishing flour mill, now a tranquil retreat

Location

As Venice is a city on water, the most elegant way to arrive to the island of Giudecca is by water taxi, which is a thrilling 30 minute ride. Giudecca is a thriving artistic neighbourhood and galleries and artists’ studios are all a short walk from the hotel. The island is a calm haven, away from the tourist area of St Mark’s Square, which is easily reached by the Hilton’s shuffle boat that runs throughout the day and into the night.

History

The hotel is situated in one of the most well-known industrial buildings on Giudecca Island and is recognised as one of the most beautiful flour mills in Europe. The first project dates back to 1884 and was commissioned by the Venetian entrepreneur

Giovanni Stucky to the German architect Ernst Wullekopf. It consisted of a simple, red brick building which rose over the demolished ruins of the Convent and Church of St. Biagio and Cataldo.

In 1895 the building added a tower, a flower deposit and an elegant neo-gothic façade. The addition of a pasta factory and silos saw the mill grow to cover an area of more than 30.000 square meters where 50 tons of flour were produced daily. At its peak, 1500 people worked in the mill 24 hours per day. Conflicts of war and increasing competition from the mainland as well as the death of Giovanni Stucky led the mill to a slow but relentless

downfall which led to its abandonment in 1955. In 1988 the Ministry of Cultural Heritage decided to set a restrictive clause on the entire building and agreed on its conversion to a hotel complex, which opened on 1st June 2007. The preservation of the name and architecture of the ancient Molino is aimed at keeping alive the memory of its past and at respecting Giovanni Stucky’s philosophy to “create a long-lasting relationship with the township of Venice”.

The team at Hilton Molino Stucky Venice are incredibly proud of its history and were quick to point out the original features they have kept, including the original bell which is on display in the lobby area, used to indicate to mill workers the start and end of their shifts and the original wooden beams seen in corridors and in rooms.

Rooms & Suites

The hotel boasts 379 rooms and suites, and you have the option of a traditional Venetian-style room or you can enjoy the timeless design of the Molino rooms and suites that offer beautiful views of the city, something I didn’t tire of seeing each morning. The hotel has seen a series of recent refurbishments, including new sophisticated deluxe rooms by Studio CaberlonCaroppi and new spacious, elegant suites, including the new Presidential Suite by Studio Forino. The suite is now the highest and largest suite in town, with private access to the hotel’s incredible rooftop pool and bar. Fondly referred to as the ‘First Lady Suite’ following a visit by Michelle Obama, the

spacious new Presidential Suite has been exquisitely designed with the utmost care to detail, ensuring the latest in sustainable design. Many marriage proposals have been made on the private balcony of the suite, which looks down onto the rooftop pool.

Spa

The eForea Spa is the perfect place to unwind after a flight or after a busy day of exploring the labyrinth of the city. Veronica and the team offer the most relaxing ‘Couple’s Venetian Massage’ which leaves you well rested. The team offers a selection of treatments, including their signature Molino body flour and honey scrub that pays homage to the impressive past of the building. The spa area also hosts a sauna and hammam as well as a small gym.

Food and Beverages

The hotel offers 4 restaurants and bars, including a panoramic rooftop bar, the highest in Venice. For lovers of dining al fresco, Aromi Restaurant offers spectacular views on its summer terrace overlooking Venice and the Giudecca Canal. You can experience authentic Venetian flavours in Bacaromi Restaurant including the famous Cicchetti and fresh pasta to fish delicacies and grilled meat. The Rialto Bar and Restaurant is much more informal - perfect for a coffee or a light lunch.

The highlight, for me, was The Skyline Rooftop Bar which is the perfect spot for romantic sunset

views. Bar Manager Sebastiano Scarpa’s and the team are incredibly attentive and suggest a signature cocktail that best suits you. I trialled the bar’s signature ‘Red Hot Chilli Pepper’ – which was a spicy tequila and pineapple delight. This summer they are shaking things up with an experimental mix of over 16 new cocktails that include ‘The Tower’, a new take on the Bloody Mary with whisky-pleated essence and tequila in a tall glass, recalling the iconic, red-bricked tower of the magnificent Molino Stucky building.

Epicurean Events

This summer the hotel has several special events lined up for food and drink lovers including a series of lagoon-side ‘Taste & Soul’ live music events at Aromi and Bacaromi restaurants. Taking place weekly from 21st July – 25th August on the restaurants’ terraces, guests will enjoy a gourmet dinner and wine tasting accompanied by live music.

The Skyline Rooftop Bar will also play host to a series of ‘Sky Beats’ DJ sets on the 2nd July and 20th August. In celebration of World Rum Day (8th July) and World Tequila Day (6th August), a duo of themed rooftop events will provide spirit tasting alongside an exclusive range of cocktails celebrating the very best of each ingredient.

In addition, the hotel will celebrate the 500-year-old

Venetian festival of Redentore on 15th July, when fireworks signal the day of the Feast of the Most Holy Redeemer. A very special Gala seven-course dinner will be prepared, offering local delicacies and wine pairings, followed by a spectacular fireworks display that can be admired from the rooftop.

Personal Note

After a busy day of exploring the city, Hilton Molino Stucky Venice is the perfect place to find calm and tranquillity. For those who wish to fit as much adventure into their trip as possible, the hotel offers a concierge service at the reception that will happily create an itinerary and book in at all the local attractions which include private shopping trips, a workshop on the art of glass making on Murano Island or taking a private gondola tour. The Presidential Suite is a masterpiece in itself and offers the perfect backdrop if you were looking to pop the question. Handily, the hotel also offers a large ballroom, so you could always return to host your big day.

Perfect for couples, business meetings or groups looking to celebrate and explore, Hilton Molino Stucky Venice is a must-visit. hilton.com

THE BEST, DONE BETTER

Aston Martin’s new DB12 grand tourer is here, writes James Fossdyke, but at first glance, it looks very similar to its predecessor.

As any mathematics professor will testify, 11 is followed by 12, so it was only a matter of time before Aston Martin replaced its gorgeous DB11 grand tourer with this: the new DB12.

To the casual observer, the two cars look much the same, but the newcomer has a new and more luxurious interior that aims to right the wrongs of the old DB11’s cabin. That means there’s an all-new touchscreen infotainment system with a fresh navigation system and mobile phone connectivity, but Aston has retained physical switches for the climate control and gear selection buttons. High-end materials have also been used extensively throughout the cabin.

As with the DB11, the DB12’s power comes from a Mercedes-AMG-sourced 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, which is twin-turbocharged to produce 671bhp. All that power goes to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which allows the car to get from 0-62mph in 3.5 seconds. At full chat, it’ll do 202mph. But Aston Martin claims there’s more to the DB12 than straight-line speed, fitting clever chassis technology in a bid to ensure this is the “sharpest” ‘DB’ model yet. As before, there’s also a choice of drive modes that allow drivers to choose whether they want the car to feel sportier or more comfortable, depending on the road conditions.

ONE OF A KIND

BMW’s designers don’t always make headlines for the right reasons – particularly with some of the brand’s more recent creations – but we thought we’d offer some credit where it’s due. The BMW Concept Touring Coupe is one of the best-looking cars we’ve seen in the past few years, so naturally, it will never make it into production. It’s simply a Z4-based concept car, designed to show off BMW’s capabilities. The classic shooting brake body and the upmarket materials of the cabin will never make it to any showroom, but it serves as a stylish reminder that BMW can still do great things when it puts its mind to it.

GRAND DESIGNS

The Jeep name is synonymous with off-roading, but it also considers itself to be a luxury brand. Which is why it has just launched a new Grand Cherokee with a low-emission plug-in hybrid powertrain and a bold price tag. Starting at just under £70,000, the Grand Cherokee is more expensive than a Porsche Cayenne, and Jeep justifies that with huge amounts of technology and luxury. And, of course, there’s Jeep’s trademark off-road capability. Despite the weight and the power, Jeep is adamant the Grand Cherokee can still cut it over rough terrain. Lexus might not be known as a leader when it comes to electric vehicles, writes James Fossdyke , but with a few tweaks, the new RZ could become a class leader

Honesty would appear to be a vastly underrated quality these days. From Instagram filters to political spin and from cold-calling scams to fraudulent corporations, we seem to live on a diet of lies, halftruths and deceit. And we swallow it all. Politicians appear bulletproof no matter what their crimes, social media influencers continue to have influence even when their content is entirely paid for and big businesses are still getting away with murder –sometimes literally. It feels as though we’re so regularly exposed to marketing, spin and utter rubbish that we’re somehow desensitised to it. So it’s quite refreshing when a big corporation freely admits the shortfalls of its business and its products.

That’s what Lexus has done with the new RZ. It’s only the brand’s second electric vehicle, following the much smaller UX, and it’s a smartly styled SUV designed to compete with the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Volkswagen ID.5. Lexus admits it’s late to the party –for a brand that’s such a leader in hybrid powertrains, the reluctance to spearhead the electric revolution is remarkable – but the company’s bosses admit they’re slightly cautious when it comes to battery technology, and they don’t want to release half-baked cars simply to steal a march on other brands.

Instead, it’s happy to let the product do the talking, and initial impressions are very good indeed. The RZ looks great, with its sharp lines and rakish shape, and Lexus has taken the opportunity to bin off the gaping grille so often associated with its petrol and hybrid models. There’s a hint of the trademark shape in the RZ’s bumper – just enough to make sure you know it’s a Lexus – but it’s nowhere near as in-your-face.

The interior is even better, with the predictably impeccable Lexus build quality complemented by a focus on technology that includes a knee-level heater. Taking up most of the lower dashboard, it’s designed to make you feel as though there’s a warm blanket over your knees, and though we wouldn’t exactly say it succeeds, it does at least work as a big radiator. The catch is, of course, that you don’t get a glove box.

Still, the RZ is pretty practical, with plenty of legroom in the rear seats and a surprising amount of headroom considering the sloping roof. The 522-litre boot is competitive, too, albeit slightly less useful than that of the BMW iX3 or the Volkswagen ID.5.

The technology, though, is still the highlight,

including the smart touchscreen that’s shared with some of Lexus’ other modern cars. It isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s significantly better than the systems previously seen in many of Lexus’ offerings, with clear graphics and a bright, modern design.

But as with any electric vehicle, it’s the technology under the skin that hogs the limelight, and with infrastructure concerns still very much an issue for electric vehicle buyers, the success of the RZ hinges on its range. But the 71.4kWh battery pack feels a bit small by the standards of the class – pretty much everything else is available with something larger. And that means the range is less impressive than we might have hoped. Officially, our top-of-the-range test car had an endurance of just under 250 miles from a full charge, but in reality, it struggled to do more than about 150 miles on a charge, particularly at motorway speeds, where electric cars are at their least efficient.

And that was on a mild and sunny spring day – ideal conditions for a battery-powered vehicle. When the temperature drops, the range becomes even lower, and the battery charging capabilities become less impressive, too. Lexus claims the RZ can be charged from empty to 80% in less than half an hour, assuming you can find a charging point fast enough to deliver 150kW. But that time has been calculated at 20 degrees Celsius. Halve that temperature, and the engineers estimate that time will double.

While all this is undoubtedly a concern for anyone contemplating an RZ, there is one crumb of comfort from all this, and that’s the refreshing honesty of Lexus. Most car manufacturers would be all too eager to keep the limitations of their car’s technology under wraps, and while Lexus isn’t exactly advertising some of these facts, extracting them didn’t require much in the way of arm-twisting.

The Japanese company even admitted to being over-cautious with electric vehicles, after sister brand Toyota was slated for pessimistic range readouts in the bZ4X electric SUV. Somehow Toyota got away with the name, which is the sort of thing Elon Musk would call his eighteenth child, but not a trip computer that shows a massive drop in range when you turn on the air conditioning. The RZ does much the same thing, albeit to a much lesser extent.

Yet perhaps this caution has its advantages. For one, Lexus says the battery is guaranteed to retain at

least 90% of its new capacity when it reaches 10 years old. And, if you get the RZ serviced at a Lexus dealer, that’s also how long the warranty can last. Assuming you do fewer than 10,000 miles a year, that is.

Where Lexus has not been cautious, though, is with the power output available. This 450e version of the RZ comes with two electric motors (one on each axle) providing 309bhp and all-wheel drive. The result is a 5.3-second dash from 0-62mph that puts this luxury SUV on a par with some hot hatchbacks.

And it’s pleasant to drive, too. The body doesn’t roll too much in the bends, and although it seems to lurch a bit even under gentle cornering, there’s plenty of grip. And around town, the light steering and surprisingly plentiful visibility make it more pleasant than you might expect. More importantly, the ride comfort is pretty good as long as you stick with the smaller 18-inch alloys fitted to the entry-level cars. The 20-inch rims look better, but the smaller wheels

Just steer clear (pun intended) of the forthcoming One Motion Grip steering system, which is set to arrive in 2025. Using a plane-style yoke, rather than a conventional steering wheel, it’s supposed to make driving easier, but it doesn’t. Lexus, honest as ever, admits the system needs some tweaks – particularly at low speeds, where it’s very twitchy – but the system will need more than that to be better than a conventional wheel. Thankfully, the RZ is only available with a wheel at launch.

Lexus’ new electric car, then, is a bit of a mixed bag. Striking design inside and out is complemented by reasonable practicality and a pleasant driving experience, but it’s all let down by the battery. Lexus claims to be working on improving the range via over-the-air updates, but we just can’t help thinking new hardware will be needed to give the RZ the success it deserves. If you could reliably get 200-250 miles from a single charge, this would be one of the best electric cars on the market. As things stand, it’s an also-ran. However, because Lexus is clearly aware of all this, there’s a chance that change might be on the way. If and when that change comes, we’d have no hesitation in recommending the RZ to anyone on the hunt for an electric car. Watch this space.

Charlotte Findlater discusses the design process behind a beautifully located Lake District home

There’s a story to be told in every structure. We tell that story visually. The Charlotte Findlater design aesthetic blends architectural elements, curated furniture, art, and natural materials. Each building’s shape, size, proportions, culture and context are aligned with the client’s aspirations. And the results are transformative; projects finished to immaculate standards with the finest attention to detail. As an award-winning practice, we work collaboratively with forward-thinking clients who share our ethos, care about sustainability and appreciate outstanding design.

SPACES THAT INSPIRE, AROUSING EMOTION

All designers have a signature style and design principles, which sit at the heart of their work. Our obsession is the interplay between people, built environments and nature. Our ethos

centres on considered design that reconnects people with nature. Out of concern for the human experience, we transform spaces into true holistic ‘emotional universes’ for our clients.

INVENTIVE & CREATIVE

We offer a broad range of design services. They encompass architecture, interiors and landscape design. Schemes are high-end, bespoke and focused on craftsmanship. Pure and raw materials are used to create luxurious, natural, and sustainable spaces that boost wellbeing. Design is above all about human relationships and the creation of atmospheres and memories. We share our passion for design through the creation of places that convey emotions and enrich the human experience – always forging a symbiotic relationship between design and nature.

The Project: Historic House Ambleside Lake District

The brief was to fully renovate this historically important house. To include new roof, windows, heating systems, Smart Home tech, re-wire and extend

in order to create a colourful dream home for our clients who were moving up from the South of England to enjoy a new life immersed in the Lake District. The property is surrounded by wonderful mature broadleaf trees and gardens. The new owners wanted to keep the period charm of the property, whilst also creating a modern home that suited their family and lifestyle.

A turn-key design and renovation of this expansive and beautifully located Lake District Home included full space planning and all interior architectural details, as well as creating improved connectivity to the gardens. We fully furnished the home with a mix of highest quality custom made furniture & lighting as well as styling and artwork selections throughout

The project includes a new garage block, renovation of an old Coach House, landscaping, a large garden room extension, locally sourced oak portico and an eco Shepherds Hut.

The house had some wonderful architectural features and it was important that a sensitive approach was taken to preserve and restore where damaged these aspects. A timeless and sustainable focus was taken, each material considered for its eco credentials which included the paint from Edward Bulmer which contains no harmful VOC’s. The project was infused with the use of as many natural and locally sourced materials as possible which really grounds the property to its local and considers the carbon footprint of the project as a whole.

Aligning with our biophilic approach, which is the theory that as humans we have an inherited an instinctive need to connect with nature. Bringing

natural elements into our homes really helps to reinforce this connection, boosting our mood and helping us to feel more grounded. We do not champion new trends. Rather, we seek to meet the needs and desires of individuals. And as defenders of slow design, we create natural, sustainable and transformational spaces with calming atmospheres. We faced a multitude of challenges along the way, including finding an ancient well hidden under two layers of flagstones, now made into a wonderful feature within the very glamorous laundry room. We also dealt with flooding of the property, a storm which brought down three trees onto part of the roof of this building and endless supply chain issues.

Client review:

“It’s a little over 14 months since we first met Charlotte and her team and in simple terms, over that time our house has been transformed with her inspiration, design knowledge and eye for detail into a home. Her ability to interpret our requirements on a physical and sensory level has been second to none and her continued determination to accept nothing less than the highest of standards has delivered a result beyond our imagination. Her passion for both design and sustainability resonated with us right from that first meeting. That passion has undoubtedly delivered a home that is full of welcoming spaces, and creates a sustainable legacy that we are very proud to be the custodians of for hopefully many years to come.” - Mr and Mrs Aitchson charlottefindlater.co.uk

The Vega Collection

A celebration of all that surrounds us and its hypnotic effect

To be human is to be curious, to push the boundaries of discovery and to want to know more - Why are we here? What else is out there? The fascination which started The Vega Collection began with these philosophical notions.

Indeed, this collection is about space and astronomy, but it is about more than just stars and planets; it is a scrapbook of human discovery; the early ideas of space that bewitched our ancestors with its greatness through to the discoveries allowed by modern day technological advances. The same view of the heavens has been observed by human eyes for centuries gone by and although we now understand more, the quietening vastness of space has an unchanged spellbinding power.

Vega is a celebration of all that surrounds us and its hypnotic effect. The collection’s creation desires the same impact- bringing this concept indoors and enveloping you in tranquillity and quiet with timeless looks that do not answer to fashion.
