My life ...

How would you describe yourself?

Ambitious and progressive, I am always looking to move forward and do better. I have a competitive nature and I am always looking to improve.

Where is home? And work?

Home is Ab Kettleby and I work in a mixture of Gaddesby in Leicestershire, Uppingham and I do many hours at home.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

I was a competitive swimmer when I was younger and always wanted to swim in the Olympics. I swam in many countries but never quite made the Olympics.

Name a few of your favourite places to be... Locally, I’d choose Rutland, there are some lovely walks and places to eat. Our favourite place is The Wheatsheaf at Edith Weston. Further afield, I love the south coast, you can’t beat the Dorset coastline, being on the beach in the Bournemouth Poole area. Then there’s Paphos in Cyprus, we just love the relaxed way of life and the food there is amazing.

What or who inspires you?

A simple thank you, there is no greater reward than someone saying thank you for what you have done for them.

What was the last gift you gave someone?

I bought my lovely wife a bottle of Miss Dior. There was no particular reason, I just did.

Tell us a secret/fun fact?

My nickname is the Polarbear, I am one of the most followed and respected members of the hi-fi scene and forums.

Who or what would you place in room 101?

That’s a tough one, I could mention many, but I would probably say country and western music. I just have to turn the radio off when that appears.

Your mastermind subject?

I would have to say Naim Audio, I love my music and anything to do with Naim Audio, which is the equipment I use.

What’s been your biggest life lesson?

Only be with people that are positive and make you happy. Negative people drag you down and drain you.

Ahead of the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, Megan Allen takes a look into the long-standing relationship between the Royal Family and our county

Rutland and Stamford has never lacked in community spirit and with the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty the Queen Consort taking place on May 6, 2023, towns and villages across the area are dusting off their Union Jack bunting once again.

From services to street parties and car boot sales to cookies, people and businesses are getting into the spirit of the occasion throughout the coronation celebrations from May 6 - 8.

“Rutland is a very loyal county,” explains Dr Sarah Furness, Lord Lieutenant of Rutland who acts as the King’s representative in the county.

“We are also a very significant

military county, with both Kendrew Barracks and St George’s Barracks in Rutland and RAF Wittering over the border, as well as a lot of veterans who have chosen to live here. I estimate that around 25 per cent of the population is in some way linked to the military. As such it’s part of our character and we are very loyal to the Royal Family.”

Horseshoes and History

The King is no stranger to Rutland, having visited Oakham in 2003 and 2014 when both he - then The Prince of Wales - and the Queen Consort - then the Duchess of Cornwallpresented commemorative horseshoes to the county of Rutland at Oakham Castle on their first visit, respectively.

The presentation of horseshoes by peers

of the realm on their first visit to the county dates back to the 12th Century and is believed to have started with the first Lord of the Manor of Oakham, Wakelin de Ferrers. De Ferrers was caught trespassing on the King’s land and was fined, so as an act of defiance, whenever a noble man passed through his manor, he would send his men out to remove one of their horseshoes, demanding a fine to have it returned.

The horseshoes were originally nailed to the gates of the castle and later the walls of the Great Hall. It was not until 1470 that the large and elaborate horseshoes that now hang on the walls of the hall were first presented; the oldest having been given by Plantagenet King Edward IV after his victory at Losecoat Field near Empingham that same year.

Ever since, the presentation of horseshoes has not only been a mark of respect for the Lord of the Manor, but a symbol of authority and status for those who present them, with crowns, feathers and emblems cast into iron for eternity.

Among them and still in pride of place above the judge’s seat in the court within the castle is a modest horseshoe, presented by HRH Queen Elizabeth II in 1967, during her first of many visits to the county. As a keen equestrian, in its centre is a racing plate

from her most successful racehorse, Aureole.

At the time Her Majesty said: “I hope that the presence of my horseshoe in Oakham Castle will always be a bond between me and the people of Rutland.”

A legacy to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

It is a bond that Dr Furness hopes will become a legacy, with the installation of a large bronze statue of Her Late Majesty due to be unveiled outside Oakham Library this autumn.

She said: “I was taken aback by the enthusiasm for the Platinum Jubilee and a few months later by the amount of people who got in touch with me as they were so moved by the Queen’s passing. My phone didn’t stop.

“Most of us have only ever known one monarch, who ascended to the throne as a beautiful young woman at a time when it was

therutlandmagazine.co.uk 21
SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

not easy being a woman in power, but she did it with such dignity. Most will remember her as an older woman, but I wanted to show her in her prime and I wanted Rutland to have something that is a visible tribute.”

The solid bronze statue has been sculpted and cast by Hywel Pratley, a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and will be raised on a plinth made from Clipsham stone. It has been privately funded by donors across the county as a lasting memorial to Her Late Majesty.

Royal Seal of Approval

Dr Furness hopes the King will come back to Rutland to update his horseshoe as King Charles III, even though his first visit is still fresh in the minds of those he met 20-years-ago.

Among them was Linda Widdowson who was working behind the bar at The Grainstore Brewery in Oakham that day and had to teach the then Prince of Wales to pour a pint of ale. He also had a tour of the brewery from co-owner and head brewer, Tony Davis who

had created a special ale “Rutland Welcome” for the occasion.

The Prince of Wales then headed to the bar where he spoke to regulars and local farmers about the importance of local and British produce, before pouring himself a pint of beer.

Linda said: “I’d stood to the side to keep out of the way, thinking someone would pour a pint for him but he insisted on doing it himself. He then turned to me and asked if he was doing it right.

“He was a good student and we had a few laughs about it. My knees were knocking together the whole time.”

Commemorating the Coronation

In traditional Grainstore style, the brewery has also created a commemorative draught beer for the Coronation, “CIIIR” (4.8%abv) which is described as pale and malty and will be available from The Grainstore Brewery Tap and supplied pubs over the bank holiday weekend.

Director Peter Atkinson said: “We wanted to create a 4.8%abv beer because Charles was born in 1948!” grainstorebrewery.com

22
therutlandmagazine.co.uk

And they are not the only local business to be creating something special to commemorate the coronation.

Caroline Stafford, owner of The Kitsch Hen based in Ashwell who is known for her uplifting and inspiring letterbox biscuits has created a series of commemorative biscuits based on the official logo for the coronation. Priced from £2 for an individually wrapped biscuit or available as sets, they are the perfect addition to street parties or family occasions.

Artist Katie Cardew who has shops in St Mary’s Street, Stamford and Mill Street in Oakham has created a special edition tea towel (£12.50) and bone china mug (£16). All products are made in Britain. Katie said: “We wanted to do something bright and fun - we think these products would be at home in any household!” katiecardew.com

Coronation Celebration

If that is not enough to tempt your tastebuds, let’s not forget the weekend itself and the celebrations taking place across the area.

Saturday, May 6, 2023

Caroline said: “The whole ethos of what we do is to help people connect with each other and so it feels lovely to create these to be enjoyed together at celebrations and get togethers.”

the-kitsch-hen.co.uk

Ovation Wine & Spirit Bar in Gaol Street, Oakham will be serving a signature cocktail, The King’s Martini for £9 during the week of the coronation. Described as “Proudly English, Proudly Rutland” it is a mix of Multum Gin Parvo Earl Grey and Honey Gin, Earl Grey Tea, lemon juice, maraschino cherry liqueur and an egg white, shaken, not stirred.

The coronation of King Charles III and the Queen Consort will take place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6, followed by a weekend of events across the country to mark the occasion.

The King and Queen Consort will arrive at the Abbey as part of The King’s Procession from Buckingham Palace, where they will be anointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and which will be broadcast live across the world.

Sunday, May 7, 2023

While many may be glued to the television to watch the Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday, communities are being encouraged to get together for the Coronation Big Lunch, with street parties and celebrations expected across the area.

In Oakham, a County Service will be held at All Saints’ Church at 10.30am followed by a parade to Cutts Close and a Party in the Park with live music and food stalls. Back by popular demand, The Fox at North Luffenham is hosting Uppingham Jazz and

Soul Band from 2.30pm on Sunday, May 7 as part of the village’s celebrations.

Monday, May 8, 2023

Monday is the “Big Help Out”, an initiative by the King to encourage communities to volunteer and support voluntary groups, creating a lasting legacy for the coronation weekend.

Stamford Town Council has organised a coronation celebration at the Recreation Ground from 12pm to 5pm with stalls, fair rides and an opportunity to meet local charities.

Stamford Civic Society has also invited shops in the town to enter a window display competition over the course of the weekend. They will be scored by a panel of local judges.

In Oakham, Dr Furness has arranged a “Clear Out to Help Out” car boot sale at

The Rutland Showground from 10am to 4pm in aid of Rutland Foodbank, Citizens Advice Rutland and 4Rutland.

She explained: “The King wants to encourage a day of charity and community on the Monday, so I thought what better way than to hold a car boot sale in aid of local charities. “It will also give people the opportunity to make a bit of money to help with rising costs or donate items to be sold in aid of the charities.”

Local charities can also book stalls to meet people in the area and talk about the work they do.

Elsewhere across the area, Belvoir Castle is hosting a street party style event on the Sunday and Monday, with British food and drink, entertainment and the castle itself as a magnificent backdrop.

Oakham Library will celebrate the Coronation of King Charles with a special afternoon of ‘Music Fit for a King’. Rutland harpist Harriet Flather will perform a selection of classical and light music in the library on Tuesday, May 9 from 2.30 until 3.30, with an interval when tea and cake will be served, and a toast can be drunk to the King. The event is free and all are welcome. For more information about the coronation and an interactive map of events, visit coronation.gov.uk

Lily Allen

talks

to The Cheshire Magazine about her debut TV role in Sky’s new big-hearted comedy drama

Dreamland is Sky’s brand new drama about secrets, lies, loves and aspirations within a family of four sisters. Set in the sun-drenched British seaside town of Margate, it is a dark comedic exploration of multi-generational female relationships, and their (somewhat dysfunctional) family dynamics.

Eldest sister Trish (Agyeman) is pregnant for the third time with her partner Spence (Kiell Smith-Bynoe). And this time, she’s decided: it’s going to be a girl. Her two sisters Clare (Gabby Best) and Leila (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) rally around her with their mum (Frances Barber) and their Margate-legend nan (Sheila Reid), “manifesting” a little girl at Trish’s ‘mani-festival’. But when their other sister, Mel (Allen), makes an unexpected reappearance back into their lives, her return threatens to destabilise the entire family. A knock on the their door and their ‘Dreamland’ is no more…

Tell us about your character Mel

Mel is a bit of a dark horse within the family make up. She has aspirations outside of Margate where her family live. She’s tried to make a life for herself away from that all, and that’s failed, and she has now returned. She loves her family, each person for different reasons. I think she just feels a bit misunderstood, and maybe not heard and not seen – but’s probably not well equipped to be able to deal with it.

26
therutlandmagazine.co.uk

What drew you to working on Dreamland?

I had just moved to New York, but I bring my kids back to the UK for summer to spend time with their dad, so when this landed on my desk, and I heard it was shooting in Margate – and I love Margate – I was instantly hooked. Of course, I thought the script was amazing and this being a Merman Production was a big pull for me too. I trusted their instinct with it, and I loved the short that I had seen of it in its previous incarnation.

You say you love Margate, how was it filming there?

It was great! I rented a little house in the square and brought my kids across. It was excruciatingly hot. But it was lovely. It’s steeped in summertime history, that town.

There are many different generations within the family, but is there a relationship for Mel that stands out most to you?

The relationship between Trish, Spence and Mel are particularly interesting. They grew up inseparable friends, but once Trish and Spence got together, Mel was somewhat side-lined and felt abandoned by them. I f ind that most interesting because that wouldn’t necessarily occur to anyone else, but it is glaringly obvious to her. If she was able to articulate these

The RUTLAND Magazine | Feature

feelings, then it could have sorted itself out, but she doesn’t have that in her.

How do you think Dreamland strikes the balance with it being a comedy but covering important topics such as race, feminism, and class?

I think all good comedies stem from reality and darkness, and the mundanity of life. People come together and laugh about those things, and I think this show does that really well.

What are Mel’s dreams?

I don’t even think Mel knows what her dreams are. She is just very reactive and knows that she used to be miserable in Margate and couldn’t see a way of rectifying that. Hence why she did the classic geographic change and tries to escape. In her head she wanted to thrive in Paris, working in fashion, but that didn’t work out, so she is back at square one. She currently doesn’t really have aspirations other than to just not be her, she is just escaping herself.

With a female heavy cast, female writers, and a female production team – do you think this had any impact on the show?

It’s funny because when we were in rehearsal doing the roundtables, there was such a good vibe and energy and I had never experienced anything like it. And then I was like, oh yeah, it’s because it’s nearly all women. But in the other hand, it’s my first TV job so I don’t have anything else to compare it to. But I can tell you that I had an amazing time and have made some lasting relationships.

This is your debut TV acting role. How did you find the filming?

I get up at 5am anyway, even when I am not working so it was actually quite nice. When I get up at 5 in Brooklyn, I’m just sat twiddling my

thumbs for a few hours, so it was nice to get up and get straight onto set and start working. I do find the waiting around on set quite interesting because I’ve got quite sever ADHD, so my concentration levels are difficult to manage in those situations. The long days don’t scare me because I’m a grafter, I like to keep busy.

Are there any similarities between you and your character?

I’ve felt very misunderstood in my life. I’ll seem very visually present to people in my life but at the same time not really understood or listened to. I think that’s what attracted me to Mel in the first place, the similarities not the differences. I felt an affinity with her.

Did you get the itch to do more acting after?

I’m doing more theatre in summer and developing a few things with different people. But also, I am back in the studio making music!

What do you think people will take from the series?

I think it’s easy to point fingers at the guilty party but there’s always two sides to a story. I think we are in a time where people are quick to blame and shame people, but we’re complicated as human beings and we do things for an all manner of reasons. Everyone comes into the world the same, right? We all become who we are from learned behaviour and our surroundings and our environment – and Mel is the same. She’s done a terrible thing, but she isn’t a terrible person.

The Fall 2023

DIOR presents The Fall 2023 DIO R presents

Finding a new ingenious way of talking about feelings and emotions that can connect us with a country and its culture is precisely what Maria Grazia Chiuri wished to accomplish in this Dior Fall 2023 collection, with a view to explaining the collaboration, work relations and friendship linking her for many years to India and Karishma Swali, who directs the Chanakya ateliers and the Chanakya School of Craft, in Mumbai. Through the silhouettes, the Creative Director celebrates the visionary spirit of Christian Dior and his successors. A colour block sequence dedicated to silks – green, yellow, pink and purple – in homage to Marc Bohan, comes in the form of sophisticated evening coats, sari-inspired straight skirts and traditional Indian cuts, as well as pants, little boleros, jackets and brassieres: a veritable sartorial genealogy defined by different fashion heritages. Geometric shapes frame the gold and silver sequins or strass; decorative motifs come forth in this kaleidoscope of colours, and the toile de Jouy is enhanced by elements of Indian scenery; the Jardin Indien floral drawing punctuates the silk of pyjamas, shirts and dresses. A dialogue in which the collaborative dimension expresses itself more than ever, in a multi-vocal manner and thanks to exceptional savoir-faire, exemplified by embroidery.

Head of Fragrance

Céline

Roux and master perfumer Marie Salamagne discuss the new Blossoms collection

Can you tell us about the trees these Blossoms were inspired by?

Céline: The three trees we have focused on can be found in China – we’ve been travelling to China for many years now and have always been inspired by Chinese blossoms. With this year’s collection, we’re bringing together favourite Blossoms of the past: Osmanthus Blossom, Nashi Blossom and Star Magnolia. Each brings different facets of fragrance to the table, but each also embraces the joys of spring and that unmistakable feeling of being in nature.

How did you come up with the ideas for each fragrance?

Céline: A colleague in our regional team introduced me to the osmanthus flower and I was amazed that such tiny flowers can produce such a powerful fragrance. I was drawn to its unique scent, combining peachy and soft suede notes. It’s one of few blossoms that you can get a natural extraction from, which gave us even more motivation to work with it. A few years later, while working on a different Blossoms collection I discovered the nashi blossom and I loved its striking aesthetic: speckled white and black blooms – very Jo Malone London.

Balancing these delicate flowers with the juicy, fruity appeal of the nashi pear gave us a fascinating contrast to explore. Star Magnolia had a different point of origin: when I was on a trip to Shanghai in 2014, I stumbled upon a city park that was full of these amazing trees in flower. I was blown away by the sight of all these white blossoms as well as the divine

smell, so I decided there and then to create a fragrance around it. All three Blossom fragrances have different personalities and tonalities, but all three celebrate the arrival of spring.

What was it like creating the Osmanthus Blossom fragrance?

Marie: This was actually the first Blossom fragrance I ever worked on with Céline, so it was a very exciting process for me. I hadn’t had the chance to travel much to China at that point, so it served as a great introduction to the incredibly rich nature and culture of the country. I wanted to capture the sense of airiness that passes through the petals of the flower and really capture its luminosity. Osmanthus also has a fruity velvety note, which is quite different from other white flowers that can be more heavily scented. It’s probably the fruitiest flower that it’s possible to work with, so the challenge for us was to make this fruity note light and airy, in a Jo Malone London style. We also balanced the luminous, fruity part of the fragrance with soft cashmere wood, giving us a Blossom scent that was incredibly joyful and uplifting, but also had an underlying softness and a compelling quality.

How do the three fragrances complement each other?

Céline: Osmanthus Blossom is the most sparkling of the collection: it’s airy, luminous and just so joyful. Nashi Blossom balances the delicacy of those exquisite flowers with the distinctive, bright juiciness of the glorious nashi pear. Star Magnolia is softer and creamier, delivering that unique, beautiful springtime scent captured in Shanghai. All three fragrances have different personalities, but all represent the arrival of spring: that moment that flowers open on the trees in all their full, fragrant freshness jomalone.co.uk

W hat To L ook For When C hoosing A S econdary S chool For Y our C hild?

Mrs Buckman is currently Head of Stamford High School in Stamford, Lincolnshire.

From September 2023, the Stamford Endowed Schools will become co-educational from ages 11-18 with Mrs Buckman as Head of the Senior Schools. Mrs Buckman has been teaching for 34 years and has just completed her 100th term in the classroom. She gives us her advice and thoughts on what to ask when visiting secondary schools, especially if you are looking at private education for the first time.

Ihave met many families in my years as a Head and the first thing I always ask parents is what they already know about the school. I would always advise that you visit early, allowing plenty of time for deadlines, entrance exams and time to process bursary requirements and application forms. By the time your child goes into Year 5, you need to be thinking about the next step.

My best advice is always think about what your child is like. What they love and enjoy is particularly important, more so than what parents think they like or what they would like them to be. It may be hard for some families but try not to think about siblings; what is right for one child is not always right for another and it is important that the school chosen is

right for the individual.

For me, the most important piece of advice I can give parents is that you need to see the school when it is working. You need to see the relationships with staff and students; and students with students. Schools will only show you the parts they want you to see on an open day; whilst they are valuable for factfinding, always arrange a private visit for a more personal tour as well. Be mindful of who is showing you around. Sometimes the school day timings dictate it might be an adult, but you want to be in a school where the Head is confident that the students can take you around. The students live the life at the school and in my mind, there is no one better to tell parents what a school is really like. I always tell parents visiting us to ask the pupils all the questions they would not ask me!

Another factor to consider when touring around a school are the facilities on offer; but do not judge the school just on this. What goes on inside the classroom is much more important than state of the art equipment. Some schools just focus on what goes on inside the classroom rather than large capital projects of expansion. Great sporting facilities does not always mean great sporting provision and curriculum offering. Do not be afraid to ask

48
therutlandmagazine.co.uk
Family | The RUTLAND Magazine

questions either, it may be the only time you get before making choices. I feel a good school should demonstrate what the students are doing. Look for signs that their work is being celebrated. Look for student artwork on walls, sculptures on display or drama performances playing on video screens. Also ask what else the school has to offer outside of the taught curriculum. Have they got a range of clubs or activities to suit different interests? Again, think about your child and what they like. They may not have a passion for music or sport, so ask what they have on offer. There should be something that everyone can do, no matter their ability and skill.

One popular question from parents is about homework! My answer to all parents is education is vastly different now compared to when they were at school. The world has changed and our understanding as adults of a work-life balance is better than ever. I believe the same should apply for students and we are great believers at Stamford that children need to have a childhood. There are some subjects you need to learn little and often, so learning French vocabulary in small bursts for example is a good idea. But homework needs to have a purpose. It needs to be relevant; so, we try to balance what students take home and encourage relaxation and rest outside of the school day.

Parents with children who have learning needs understandably have lots of questions about support and provision for their child. My honest advice is to be absolutely up front with the schools you are visiting. Do not try and hide your child’s requirements as it is important that the school has the right provision to meet their needs. As parents you need to understand the support that is available

and if they can offer the right balance for you. If your child has a recent educational psychologist report, then do take this with you to your school visit. Ask to meet the SENCO and be honest. A school never does not want to help, but they know their capabilities and they know what they can offer your child.

Behaviour and bullying are other more sensitive topics that all parents want to discuss. In ALL schools there will be some bullying in some way. Children fall out, it is the nature of their social development stage, but it is how you put them back together that is a true marker of how good pastoral care works. This is part of learning how to be young adults. How a school deals with it, and supports your child, is the most key factor.

One very practical question that parents often forget to think about is how your child is going to get to school. This can add a lot onto a child’s school day, especially if they do not like travelling! Also, when they come to the stage of socialising outside of school, how easy will that be for you as parents? A bus journey to school is one thing, but trips to town and to visit friends can impact busy lives, so I always suggest this is something to think about.

Finally, I always advise parents to be quite firm about who makes the final decision when choosing a school. Let children have a say but the final choice needs to rest with the parents or carers. They will look ahead into their future. What is right in Year 5 or 6 may be very different in Years 10 and 11. You must work in partnership with your child. You sign up for the package of school and that must be right for the individual. A child has one education and each child’s experience is different. stamfordschools.org.uk

MEET THE CHEF: LEIGHTON KENNETT

Head Chef at The George & Dragon in

What’s your first memory of your love for cooking? Watching cooking programs after school with my mum.

When did you know you wanted to be a chef? When I was a kitchen porter and would listen to stories from the older chefs who had travelled and saw the world with this profession.

Where were you trained, and how difficult was your training?

I trained in multiple restaurants around Leicestershire, taking inspiration and building a network of chefs from each place. I think training is as hard as you make it, the more you care, the more hours you’re willing to put in and pressure you put on yourself to get better.

What do you love most about your job? The creative freedom and the ability to work in an environment I’m comfortable in with like-minded people.

What’s your favourite dish to create? Any one pot dish is always great to cook, the ability to condense all the flavours and tweak them each time keeps cooking interesting for me.

Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? Seasonality and past experiences/chefs.

What are you most proud of in your career? Cooking around the world; from Europe with the Cirque Du Solei to Asia for the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

What advice would you offer to an aspiring chef? Work hard and push yourself until you’re good enough to work for yourself, then get out and see the world. People need feeding everywhere; every film set, festival, TV and stage show need catering. The world of cooking is bigger than you first imagine and can be very rewarding; not just financially; the experiences you could have are beyond anything you think possible.

SPOTLIGHT ON...

Fika Woolfox is owned by us, brother and sister duo Ivo and Tia. We opened our doors at Woolfox to the public at the end of November 2022, a couple of months before they officially opened to members. Set in the old clubhouse, the space has seen a huge change and update in decor and style.

Fika is set in the beautiful Rutland countryside and overlooks the Woolfox golf course. Sunny spring mornings are particularly magical as the sun comes up over the golf course and casts the most stunning golden light across the cafe. As you come in, the first thing you see is a beautiful dried flower cloud which was made bespoke for us and fitted on site by Haus of Botanica, based in Stamford - she is the dried flower queen! The setting is relaxed and cosy, helped by the soft sheepskins everywhere, but still feels super spacious. Our small team is smiley, friendly and cool and all basically know the menu off by heart, so are always ready to recommend a dish to suit your mood or hunger levels! We’re all real coffee geeks too, and our head barista Rosy trains everyone to an exceptionally high

standard, so for those who don’t know or drink coffee we can always help with a drink recommendation based off what they like.

Our head chef Ruaraidh has been with us since the start; he started as head chef at Fika Oakham and moved over to Woolfox when we opened as he was ready for a new challenge and we knew he was the right man to lead our kitchen here. Ruaraidh has extensive experience as head chef in gastropubs, but his real passion lies with fresh, unique and colourful brunch dishes. Our menu changes 4 times a year with the seasons, and all our chefs come up with ideas that we then consolidate (with great difficulty!) into a final menu. Our most popular dish has to be either the Fika’s Avo, our take on avocado toast with slow roasted tomatoes, feta crumb, dukkah and our sought-after homemade hot sauce (it rivals anything you can buy in the supermarket), or our Fika Bowl which is essentially a nourishing bowl of goodness with 5 or 6 different veg-based elements (eg. rainbow slaw, harissa roast chickpeas & sweet potato) and an option to add a protein such as nduja pulled chicken or crispy chilli tofu. Many of

the team have this almost every day as it’s so healthy, filling and nourishing and just encapsulates how we feel food should be perfectly. We source our coffee from Stewarts of Trent Bridge who are based in Sneinton Market in Nottingham. They’re meticulous about their roasting process and we are so grateful for our relationship with them. We use a slightly unusual single origin Papua New Guinea coffee as our house blend, which is a medium to full bodied coffee and less traditional than most cafes would dare to serve, but we and our customers are obsessed.

Fika Woolfox is the perfect brunch spot for those looking to come and spend a few hours away from busy Stamford or Oakham and fully relax. We have plenty of space so we can accommodate bigger groups and families, but we also have plenty of space for individuals looking to get some work done outside the usual home office. Our brunch recommendation would be an oat flat white to start, Green Goddess smoothie to get all your vitamins in, followed by our Wild Mushrooms dish which is loved by veggies and meat-lovers alike.

Treating Injuries Through Thalassotherapy

With travel being so accessible, seeking medical advice abroad has never been easier. Forte Village’s Acquaforte Thalasso & Spa recognises the importance of treating injuries and their pioneering Thalassotherapy circuit can provide the perfect antidote.

The journey begins in the first pool with the highest concentration of magnesium salt and saline density which starts to soothe joints and muscles at 38°. At the same temperature, the second pool offers alfresco aromatherapy with a saline and herbal mixture of sea oil, aloe and mint. The seawater in the third pool intensifies a high detox eliminating toxins, its private location allowing for floating massages. The synergy between water and air pressure in the fourth pool helps tone muscles, as well as having an anti-swelling and draining effect. The last two pools offer lower temperatures of around 32° and 25° to help regulate body temperatures.

Combined with the Thalasso pools, guests can continue to focus on their medical needs at the AcquaForte Clinic. The Forte Lab is a state-of-the-art diagnostic centre with an extensive medical team on hand to create personalised treatment plans for their guests. Through medical consultations, it specialises in the care of muscular and osteoarticular pathologies, diseases of the spine, physiotherapy, sport rehabilitation, and cardiovascular check-ups. fortevillageresort.com

H ist o ric C ha r m in the h eart of Kens i n g to n

Once the home of Victorian aristocrat William Alexander, 100 Queen’s Gate Hotel has now been transformed into a luxury 5 star haven, visited by Kate Kinsella

Location

Nestled in the heart of London’s ever-evolving Brompton Design District, 100 Queen’s Gate hotel offers a calming sanctuary away from the bustling streets of Kensington.

There really isn’t anything this intriguing part of London doesn’t offer. Want to gaze at the latest exhibition of hidden Tibetan treasures or judge the fashion archives of old Hollywood? Head to the Victoria & Albert Museum. Curious about the discoveries of the hidden corners of the world? The Natural History Museum will certainly have what you are looking for. In in the mood for something to keep that sweet tooth satisfied? visit one of the charming bakeries o the famous Old Brompton Road. All that you could need is conveniently within walking distance of the stylish 100 Queen’s Gate hotel.

Rooms

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this charming 18th Century Townhouse is home to an impressive 228 rooms and suites. A kind member of the hotel team proudly informs me that no two rooms are the same and every category has been carefully

designed to offer a unique experience to each guest.

I have to say, something that this hotel is particularly skilled in is ensuring you do not feel like one of many guests and actually offers an experience that feels exclusive to very few. A sign of a well operated hotel in my book.

My abode for the night was in one of the ‘Superior Queen’ rooms. I felt for a solo traveller and a one-night stay, this charming little room accommodated me well. The mix of traditional and contemporary interior design has been well thought out and although a starting category, you certainly don’t feel you are missing out on the 5 star touches like the fancy coffee machine, fluffy slippers and of course, the all-importan luxury bedding.

Facilities

The team at 100 Queen’s Gate Hotel understand the importance of home away from home amenities including a space for wellbeing and exercise, meeting rooms for those all-important negotiations and a relaxing and picturesque library lounge to recharge the social batteries in.

There is no denying the time and creative skill that has gone into the aesthetics of this property. The design team have truly created a boutique masterpiece throughout the entirety of the hotel.

Another special touch is the option to take one of the hotel's bicycles out for a spin. If you are lucky enough

to get one of London’s crisp and sunny days, be sure to ask the front desk to take one out and head off to explore one of the many parks the city has to offer.

Not forgetting the tempting dining options this hotel has to offer, where you can enjoy a delicious and hearty meal at the Belgian inspired W/A Kensington or opt for a cocktail and some small plates to share at ESQ bar.

True to English tradition, the hotel also offers a wonderful afternoon tea experience in Botanica. This was my favourite space in the hotel given its dreamy aesthetic. Dressed with Cherry Blossom and bright white shutters as well as delicate mirrors and turquoise velvet furnishings. A truly special part of the hotel to experience.

My Experience

After many years of working in the luxury travel industry, you can become quite critical of what a ‘5 star’ property really means and question how many hotels that are given this rating actually live up to their star rating in reality. For me, I felt what stands out the most about the 100 Queen’s Gate Hotel is the people who work tirelessly to deliver personal and quality service to their guests.

The staff make the vision of a ‘home away from home’ come to life through the caring way they interact with their guests. Leaving the stuffy and rigid old-fashioned rules of 5 star service behind and replacing them with a fresh and guest centred service environment. When you are a resident of the country’s capital, you can quickly forget all that your home city has to offer. Staying at 100 Queen’s Gate Hotel reminded me of how lucky I am to have access to the treasures of the city at my fingertips and for that, I am very grateful.

Personal Highlight

For me, my evening in the in-house W/A Kensington restaurant made my stay. As I walked towards the open doors of the restaurant, I was greeted by a friendly waitress who gave me a choice of tables for me

to choose from depending on what would make me feel most comfortable.

I quickly spot one of my favourite dishes on the list of starters. Mozzarella’s more indulgent better half, Burrata. Next, I do what I am particularly skilled in which is going over and over the mains as if it is the last meal I will ever be allowed to enjoy. I soon get tired of dissecting each dish and settle for the Salmon accompanied by seasonal vegetables, I then worry unnecessarily that what I have ordered is in danger of being ‘too healthy’ and panic order some chunky truffle and parmesan chips at the last minute. Th lovely waitress did a grand job of assuring me my addition was absolutely vital to the enjoyment of my meal.

Each course is clearly made with care, the Burrata presented with juicy cherry tomatoes and grapefruit segments. The salmon has a deliciously crispy skin and juicy melt-in-the-mouth texture, the truffle chips ar generously coated with truffle and parmesan

Next, the lovely waitress convinces me that it would be regrettable to leave the restaurant without at least trying one of the desserts. In all honesty, it took all of a second to get me to agree and I order a selection of small chocolate covered sweet treats. Also made with culinary magic to my delight.

After sharing my shame with the giggling waitress, I head down to take a peek at the ever-so-chic Esq Bar. Everything feels so calm and tranquil, light Saturday night music can be heard in the background and everyone looks as if they are floating on a cloud o relaxation, curled up in the cosiness the space has to offer. I politely decline the charming barman’s offer of a nightcap and head up to my room ready for a good night’s sleep. hilton.com

Set near the lakefront with stunning views from the rooftop infinity pool, David and Kate Poynton enjoyed a relaxed winter stay at Hilton Lake Como

Lake Como has been on our must do list for some time now, so we were very excited about our stay at Hilton Lake Como. We arrived on a crisp January afternoon and were instantly impressed by the immaculate reception area, located in an old silk factory. Our check-in was smooth, informative and professional. We were allocated a loft suite which was fantastic to say the least! The standout feature of this room was the full glass ceiling, which gave a unique view of the surrounding mountains of Lake Como; a view that you could not take your eyes from. And as this was a loft suite split over two floors, the bed was perfectly positioned on the upper floor so that in the morning you could open the electric blinds and stare out straight over the Lake. The rest of

our room was modern, stylish and well laid out with a spacious lounge area, walk-in wardrobe and a large bathroom.

That night we had the pleasure of dining in Satin Restaurant located in the hotel. We indulged in an excellent three course meal. For starters, we had a deliciously creamy burrata with black truffle perlage, and the scallops which were cooked to perfection and complemented by a chorizo crumble and violette potato crisp. For mains, we enjoyed lobster spaghettoni, which was delightfully indulgent, and as you would

65
therutlandmagazine.co.uk

expect in Italy the pasta was perfectly al dente. I (David) opted for deer as my main course, which was cooked pink, just the way I like it. The deer was light, tender and in true Italian fashion included black truffle, which really enhanced the dish. This, of course, was all the better for having some top notch local Italian wine to wash down with. Our sweet tooth was then satisfied by a lovely and rich tiramisù and the Valrhona dark chocolate fondant heart. To put the cherry on top to this wonderful meal, we treated ourselves to a glass of dessert wine (the Moscato).

By this point we were feeling very comfortable in this hotel and relaxed further in the hotel lounge area. The lounge is located in the centre of the hotel and smartly connects the original silk factory with newly built parts of the hotel. The lounge which is encased in glass walls and ceiling offers an expansive feel while still feeling cozy. I was also impressed by the diffusers as this aroma added to our relaxation. Before turning in for the night to see if we could do some star gazing through our glass ceiling loft suite we enjoyed a few more drinks in the lounge area and was impressed by the table service we received.

After a good night’s sleep we were ready for breakfast, which was again

located in the smartly designed Satin Restaurant. Breakfast was buffet style and had an excellent continental selection, along with a well stocked hot selection. I was impressed by their scrambled eggs as you could choose between how you like them cooked - soft and creamy or hard scrambled eggs. And if you’d prefer, omelette’s were on offer to order, as well as a few other à la carte options

After breakfast we headed to the rooftop to explore the roof terrace where the infinity pool was located. Again, it was a crisp winters day with perfect blue skies and a dusting of snow on the mountain tops. Normally in these conditions a dip in the pool would be out of the question; however this infinity pool was heated to a very pleasant 30C. Sometime passed enjoying this unique experience and admiring the views, before heading down to the eForea Spa for a silk touch massage which was by far the most relaxing experience ever. In keeping with celebrating Como’s rich history of silk making excellence, this massage is a signature treatment that was pure relaxation from start to finish, with aromatic oils selected for you by your therapist and a tailored massage to suit your needs.

66
therutlandmagazine.co.uk

Using silk stretching, it is perfect for melting away stress and tension, leaving you feeling rejuvenated, balanced and soothed. The eForea Spa itself was also incredibly calming from the moment you walked in creating the perfect environment for sumptuous relaxation.

After such a sublime massage we continued to enjoy the wellness centre which included an indoor pool with hydro jets, a sauna, steam room and a relaxation area.

After the most relaxing morning, we decided to head into Como to do some exploring. Hilton Lake Como is located only a 10-15 minute stroll away from the iconic town. A walk by the lake discovering some local bars and restaurants while taking in the atmosphere and views is a must. In the evening we headed back to the hotel and went down to the Taffeta bar. The bar flows directly from reception and is elegant in design. We were made two excellent Smoked Negronis and the hospitality and service was second to none. The team on the bar were also very helpful and friendly and were even kind enough to offer some suggestions on where to go on our onward trip to Milan.

The next morning we headed down for breakfast to get fuelled up for our onward journey. Our stay at Hilton Lake Como was coming to an end. We checked out and the concierge arranged for an executive Maserati car to take us to the train station. Our stay at Hilton Lake Como beat our expectations; the food, service, hotel room, eForea Spa and overall ambience were sensational and we left completely relaxed. Lake Como is a special place, and when staying in Lake Como a special hotel is deserved. Hilton Lake Como is certainly the place to stay. hilton.com

The team are incredibly attentive, and you will leave Lacu feeling well fed and well looked after.

The hotel’s bar is a hive of activity in the later evening as we experienced guests mixing with locals over a cocktail, sharing their experiences from the day. When it comes to mixology, the bar team know what they are doing. The cocktail menu is varied; however the team are open to steering off menu to create your favourite mix. The area is incredibly relaxed and offers a decent daytime bar menu that includes traditional sandwiches, nibbles (nachos,

As well as being a sleek-looking electric SUV, the Activesphere transforms into a pick-up truck on demand, but even that isn’t the most remarkable thing about this design study. Because instead of having a conventional interior, the Activesphere comes with a mixed reality cabin accessed through a pair of glasses, displaying interactive elements over the real interior. ULTIMATE ENCORE

The astonishing Aston Martin DBS may be about to exit stage left, but its final act will be one to remember

Aston Martin is about to wave goodbye to its magical DBS grand tourer, but like an aging rock star on a farewell tour, the big Aston is coming back for a final encore with the DBS 770 Ultimate. A more powerful version of the standard DBS, the limited-edition Ultimate has already sold out, and the first examples will arrive with customers this summer.

In total, just 499 examples of the DBS 770 Ultimate will be built for customers around the world, with 300 coupes joined by 199 convertibles. But regardless of the roof, each one will come with plenty of enhancements to ensure it lives up to its name. There are vents in the bonnet to increase cooling and carbon-fibre elements all round to lower weight and make the car look more muscular.

Inside, Aston Martin has fitted high-end Sports Plus seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara, complete with a ‘fluted’ quilting design. There’s a bespoke colour

split, too, with contrasting colours and a tailor-made strap for the centre arm rest. And, of course, there’s a unique set of sill plaques for each car, denoting its position as a limited-edition DBS 770 Ultimate.

Perhaps most importantly, however, Aston Martin has fettled the V12 engine to produce a massive 759bhp, all of which goes to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox and a limited-slip differential. That ensures impressive performance, but Aston has also tweaked the suspension and brakes to make sure the Ultimate handles as well as it should. The company claims its “targeted improvements” will “accentuate” the feel and agility of the car.

BIRTHDAY BASH

One of Cheshire’s most elegant residents is celebrating a big birthday this year, and Bentley has given it quite the present. We say it because the Cestrian in question is not a person, but a car. More specifically, it’s the gorgeous 1953 Bentley R-Type Continental affectionately known as ‘Jas’. Housed at Bentley’s Crewe HQ, Jas is a stunning example of the Bentley tourer that was once the world’s fastest four-door production car, and to celebrate the big day, Bentley has built a modern interpretation, applying the same paintwork and interior trim to the modern Continental GT. The new car is not set to go on sale, but it will join the Bentley fleet and might be spotted in and around Crewe over the coming months.

HARDCORE HALLELUJAH

Just last year, BMW revived its fabled CSL badge with a new, hardcore version of the M4 sports coupe. The resulting stripped-out, two-seat two-door missed the mark somewhat, so BMW has applied the same weight-saving logic to the bigger, heavier M3 saloon. Less controversially known as the M3 CS, the new car retains its back doors, but it gets lighter bodywork, a pared-back cabin and some extra power for the 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine up front. It gets all-wheel-drive, too, to help it transmit its 542bhp to the road with minimum fuss, and the result is a four-door saloon that gets from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 188mph. BUZZ HOT

Back in the 1950s, Volkswagen was an up-and-coming German car maker, known primarily for the Beetle, the morally questionable car of the people. But after the Beetle came something with slightly fewer ties to extreme right-wing politics. In fact, the Type 2, known locally as the ‘Bulli’, became a symbol of the hippy movement, embodying anti-nuclear sentiment, peace, love and, to some extent, drugs. You probably know it as the VW Camper.

Today, the old VW Bulli is quite a popular classic, desirable among those who want to relive the swinging ‘60s or simply imagine they’re still surfers on Venice beach. So, with the Bulli back in fashion, VW has gone the way of Fiat and Mini, creating a modern interpretation of the Bulli with modern fixtures and fittings. The style is not quite the same – it’s retro, rather than classic –but the attitude remains, and this being the 2020s, it had to be electric.

Welcome, then, to the most peaceful, most lovey-dovey, most environmentally friendly VW bus yet: the new ID. Buzz. Yes, the name is ridiculous, but the recipe is simple. Take some of the styling of the old Bulli, modernise it, then apply it to a practical and modern cabin with a tree-hugging electric powertrain. Surely, it’ll be the darling of hippies old and new?

It certainly looks the part. The two-tone paint is, sadly, an optional extra, but surely it has to be the first option any would-be customer would tick. Combined with the almost flat front, the huge VW badge and the grille-like trim on the rear window frames, it’s clearly a child of the old Bulli. Yet it still looks modern, with a kind of Star Wars-style look to it, and a bulky yet timeless shape. There are no two ways about it – the Buzz is a good-looking thing.

It’s also a pretty sizeable thing. You have to climb up into it, and the footprint is roughly the same as that of the Transporter van that has become so popular among tradespeople. In fact, VW also makes a panel van version of this vehicle, which it calls the ID. Buzz Cargo. Without rear seats, it’s a massively spacious electric van,

offering almost as much load-carrying ability as the conventionally powered Transporter.

Oddly, though, the passenger-carrying ID. Buzz conspires to be much less practical. Although it’s huge and the boot is predictably enormous, it’s currently available only in five-seat form, which means it’ll carry as many people as, say, a Golf. Surely, a seven-seat version must be on the way, but Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed it yet, so five is all the ID. Buzz will take for the time being.

Admittedly, the enormous amount of interior space means it’ll seat five people very comfortably, even if they take all their luggage with them. The huge boot means suitcases, paddleboards, umbrellas and anything else you might want to cart about will be swallowed up with consummate ease, and that makes this car ideal for days out with the family.

Except, of course, it’s only ideal if you’re going somewhere very close to home or with an abundance of charging points. Because the ID. Buzz is completely electric – there’s no petrol or diesel engine whatsoever – it has an official range of about 250 miles. But if you want to drive on the motorway, that range is likely to fall below 200 miles in anything other than ideal conditions. By which we mean a warm day on which you’re reluctant to use the air conditioning, which saps charge from the battery. That said, you can charge the ID. Buzz fairly quickly, assuming you can find a working charge point with adequate charging speed. Finding one of those can take a little bit of forward planning.

That minor issue aside, the ID. Buzz is a very pleasant thing to live with. Whereas other cars in VW’s electric ID. range can be a bit bland inside, the ID. Buzz has a smartly styled dashboard with mock wood trim and a shelf for storing stuff, as well as a removable centre console storage box for extra storage. Add in big door bins, comfy seats and a massive central touchscreen, and it all looks pretty good.

But VW has made a few mistakes in there. First of all, there’s the insistence on swapping buttons for touchscreens, which means there are almost no physical controls whatsoever. Instead,

The quintessential hippy van just got even more eco-friendly with the arrival of the new ID. Buzz MPV. James Fossdyke went to see whether it can be as iconic as its ancestor

Volkswagen has placed a few touch-sensitive sliders on the dashboard, allowing you to control volume and heater temperatures. Or at least that’s the idea. In practice, the sliders are fiddly and awkward, and because VW forgot to illuminate them at night, they’re completely useless once the sun goes down.

The touchscreen navigation system is only marginally better, with far too many fiddly and distracting menus that make operating it a nightmare when you’re on the move, but at least the system is crisp and stylish. Combined with the digital instrument display behind the steering wheel, it does everything most customers will ever need it to do.

And the ID. Buzz has plenty going for it. Because it’s based on much the same mechanical components as the ID.4 electric SUV, it’s quite pleasant to drive, and certainly more enjoyable than the old ‘Bulli’ of the 1950s. The

steering is light, you get features such as parking sensors and reversing cameras, and because the incredibly heavy battery lives under the floor, the ID.

Buzz doesn’t roll around in corners like most vans would. It’s even quite comfortable at motorway speeds, although the heavy battery does make the suspension work hard around town. Combine all that with the quiet power of the 201bhp electric motor, and you’ve got a family bus that’s far more refined than most of its rivals, and one that feels more car-like on the road. But all that comes with a very hefty price indeed. Prices start at well over £60,000, and our test car was knocking on the door of £70,000, which is a lot of money for something when a seven-seat Tiguan Allspace costs roughly half as much.

In truth, though, the Tiguan Allspace is not a competitor to the ID. Buzz. The electric van is its own thing, designed purely for those who want a fresh twist on the Bulli bus style with modern safety and technology. And it delivers that perfectly, offering a likeable and charming electric van that’s built to tug on your heart strings and those of everyone who lays eyes on it. It’s cool, and that’s all it needs to be.

Maserati has hit gold with its new MC20 supercar, but will the open-top Cielo version make the Ferrari rival better or worse? James Fossdyke went to find out

There are some things you just can’t do. We’re all well aware of the rules surrounding murder and shoplifting, but more minor indiscretions can still provoke outrage. You wouldn’t wear jeans at a wedding, for example, and you certainly won’t be wearing a football shirt at a golf club any time soon.

Another faux pas is publicly humiliating your most popular workmates – a move that’s more or less guaranteed to make you a pariah in the office. For years, that social no-no has left Italian car maker Maserati fighting its rivals with one hand tied behind its back. When Ferrari is your sister company, you can’t go around making the Prancing Horse look silly. But now Maserati is under new ownership, and divorce from Ferrari was part of the deal. All of which means the Italian manufacturer is free to do what it wants when it wants. And that means showing Ferrari who is really in charge.

To do that, the company launched the MC20 supercar, a two-seat coupe with a stellar 3.0-litre V6 engine positioned just behind the driver for optimum weight distribution. With 621bhp, it was capable of more than 200mph, and it could accelerate just as quickly as Ferrari’s latest creation: the 818bhp Ferrari 296 GTB. The MC20 coupe was, and still is, epic. It’s fast, it’s light on its feet and the interior manages to be cool and modern without feeling pared back. Best of all, it looks absolutely fantastic. From the roofline to the exhaust exits halfway up the rear bumper, it’s a fabulous piece of automotive design, and one that’s well worthy of its place alongside the 296 GTB.

But that gave Maserati a problem when it wanted to build the inevitable open-top version. Dubbed

the Cielo, which means ‘sky’, it has an electrically folding solid roof with a glass panel, which is great for letting the light in, but a bit tricky to fold and stow when you want the wind in your hair.

So Maserati went back to the drawing board and tweaked the entire rear end of the car, raising the rear deck to accommodate the roof and fitting an electric folding mechanism, as well as some buttresses behind the head rests. As a result, the MC20 Cielo has lost the see-through panel over the engine, but that’s the only sacrifice you’ll make. Although it’s slightly different, the Cielo is no less beautiful than the coupe – at least not with the roof lowered – and it gains the glass sunroof, as well as a retractable rear window. And despite the fact Maserati has made no changes at all to the sonorous V6 engine, the heavier Cielo is still just as fast as the coupe.

The sprint from 0-62mph still takes less than three seconds, and the top speed is still over 200mph. And it’s equally fast in corners. Normally, cutting away the roof would make a supercar softer and floppier than its hard-top sibling, but Maserati has managed to keep the two cars closer than most in terms of rigidity. That means the Cielo is every bit as sharp to drive, with light, fast, and precise steering, as well as huge amounts of grip. As with the coupe, all the power goes to the rear wheels, so it will misbehave if provoked, but the whole car feels natural and easy to control despite its potency. It’s comfortable, too. Okay, you won’t mistake it for a Rolls-Royce, but in its softest setting it’s more than comfy enough for a long motorway drive.

And that isn’t the only great thing about the Cielo. Because of the new retractable rear window, visibility is infinitely improved (because there is some), and you get better access to the sound of the engine, even when the roof is up. No matter what the weather is doing outside, you can always drop that window to hear the glorious Italian engine, which has so much character Maserati gave it a name: Nettuno. In the coupe, it sounds stellar from the outside, but muffled inside, whereas the Cielo gives you full access to its vocal range at all times.

What’s more, the glass roof panel sheds some light on the stunning interior, with its beautifully

you a clear view of the road behind. It takes some getting used to, and if you don’t like it you can switch to a conventional mirror with the flick of a switch, but bear with it, because it’s a very useful gizmo.

sculpted seats and clean dashboard. The build quality is largely brilliant, save for a few buttons on the steering wheel, and even the technology is good. The touchscreen is a massive improvement on what’s gone before in Maserati products, and though the satellite navigation appears to be stolen from a Peugeot, it works reasonably well. That’s all good news, because Maserati has hidden numerous functions in the touchscreen to achieve that clean design. Even the roof switch is in there, as is a control to change the opacity of the glass roof, giving you some privacy when you want it. But the best bit is the rear-view mirror, or should that be the rear-view camera? Because visibility is still limited, Maserati has fitted a camera on the bumper, and its view is displayed on the rear-view mirror, giving

Of course, much of the MC20 Cielo’s brilliance is shared with the considerably cheaper MC20 coupe, but choosing the convertible version feels like a bit of a no-brainer. With the roof up, you get the same awesome performance and handling, as well as marginally better visibility, while taking the roof off gets you closer to the noise of that howling V6 engine. Yes, a Ferrari 296 is arguably a better car, but the MC20 runs it so close the argument is irrelevant. But the clincher is not the looks or the speed or the roof. It’s the rarity and the way it makes you stand out. Ferrari is making some brilliant cars these days, and there’s something glorious about the badge, but they can feel a bit… unimaginative. It’s like supporting Real Madrid or drinking Champagne. It’s just as much fun (if not more so) to watch Macclesfield FC and drink Cremant de Loire, but it makes you more interesting. The same goes for the Maserati.

Offering top quality service and buildings that are made to last, Crown Pavillions offers a wide range of long term investment opportunities for your home

Since appearing on ITV’s Love Your Garden, the British public have sought out Crown Pavilions and their unique luxury wooden gazebos and garden rooms. With a VIP list of discerning customers, including Lord Alan Sugar and Duncan Bannatyne, Crown Pavilions is often described by those in the know as the best in the business.

So, what makes a Crown Pavilions garden building so special?

Crown Pavilion’s CEO Luke Dejahang attributes this to what is known within the company as the Crown Marque of Excellence. “We only use the finest sustainably sourced materials and craftsmen to create what we consider to be the world’s finest garden rooms. Underpinning everything is our meticulous attention to detail and five-star customer service.”

LUXURY GAZEBOS

Year round alfresco cooking, dining, lounging and entertaining

A luxury wooden gazebo from Crown Pavilions creates a unique space in heart of your garden where you can entertain friends, cook, serve sumptuous suppers and party long into the night. Or, if you prefer the quieter life, a blissful space where you can relax over breakfast, laze away a summer’s afternoon or simply sit back and enjoy a good book.

There are 14 models to choose from, for gardens of every size and shape. They all come

with dining and lounging furniture and luxurious soft furnishings as standard. The marine grade canvas side blinds offer protection and flexibility – they can be dropped down and zipped together during inclement weather and rolled up in the sunshine. You can also customise your cushion and blind colours to taste, add heating and even upgrade with a wood-fired oven for larger models.

GARDEN ROOMS

Insulated garden offices, gyms, bars, cinemas, teenage dens and more...

A Crown Pavilions insulated garden room, built to residential standards is for those seeking additional living space. However, unlike a bricks and mortar extension a garden room can be built in just a few short weeks and in many cases planning permission is not required. With many still working from home, garden offices are still in

high demand. A Crown Pavilions luxury garden room can be used for so much more than work though. “Garden bars, cinemas and gyms are three of our most popular projects. We’re also seeing more customers ask for multi-functional space”, adds Luke.

The use of traditional timber building methods sets Crown Pavilions apart. Their buildings are built on site with 6’x2’ and 4’x2’ timber studs, joists and structural steels where necessary. The company also holds a TRADA certification from the Timber Research and Development Association which means everything is compliant and correct – from the timber sizing, insulation and joist spacing through to ventilation, fixtures and fittings. The result is a residential grade living space on par with the rest of your home. crownpavilions.com
