EDITOR’S NOTE

What is there not to love about Fall? It does seem to kind of kick summer out a little quickly,

but I always forget how amazing Fall is. Every year it sneaks it’s way into my heart last minute and wins the race for the best season. I’m so looking forward to cozier days, flannel blankets, visits to our local pumpkin patch and lots + lots of homemade chili + apple pie.

In this issue we of course have tons of fashion looks for little peanuts to dress them up for colder days and you will also find our favorite Fall bags for little peanuts that are perfect for heading back to school or adventures in the mountains. We dive deeper into motherhood and what life is like adding more children to the mix and the struggles + triumphs we all face as parents. We share advice + thoughts from Lindsey Shipley, founder of Lactation Link and a certified lactation consultant. We also step into the stylish home of Ali Hynek, owner of Nena and Co, and amazing mama to triplets! You know we wouldn’t leave you without sharing our favorite eats for the season so make sure to flip all the way to the last pages to get our must-try recipes! If I could bottle up Fall + keep it forever I would. So ready to slow things down a bit and enjoy the colors of this season!

What a gorgeous, awe-inspiring moment: a mother

and her child. A little being completely dependent on another for everything, including the nourishment to grow and thrive. The newborn stage is one in that the baby without the mother just doesn’t make sense. If separation is necessary, it’s more like pressing pause. All is right in the world again when the two are reunited. Mom and baby is a symbiotic relationship that inspires a sense of fulfillment for both parties. For the baby, he looks to the mother for every need, literally still believing he is an extension of her, not a separate person. For the mother, there is a sense of pride in being able to protect, provider, and care for her own. As a labor and delivery RN, lactation specialist, prenatal educator, sister, and friend, I’ve been blessed to be apart of so many stages of bringing a baby into this world. It is truly a special time to be apart of. All things surrounding the perinatal period (conception, pregnant-

13

| littlepeanutmag.com

cy, labor, delivery, postpartum) seem to have a lasting impact on women as a whole. The experiences you have during this period leave a biological imprint you won’t soon forget. Although we can’t necessarily control all aspects of this period (possible complications, unforeseen circumstances), it’s important that we are confident in the choices we can make. It’s also imperative that we feel support and caring throughout the process. As I teach my prenatal breastfeeding classes and counsel with mothers in the hospital and their homes, I find there is always a few common things women are looking for. Education. Options. Support. Reassurance. Confidence building. I feel that pre- and postnatal education should be more about smart and practical options, rather than lists of “dos” and “don’ts”. There’s not a one-size-fits-all way to being a great Mom. We all have different strengths, backgrounds, resources, and

opinions. We may not all share the same political party, church group, or vision of what a family means. But we can all agree on one thing: We could all use a friend, a smile, a hug, a few words of encouragement, and a “You’re doing a great job”. We all need more people rooting for our success. The most important friends a Mom can call on are those that support her in her choices as a mother, even if they are different from their own. Those are the friends you can call during a “break-down” (you know what I’m talking about), the ones that brainstorm with you whether your baby needs to go to the doctor or not, the ones that give you big hugs when you seem to need it the most. They seem to “get it”, it’s like they’ve been there before. The truth is, every mother will experience struggle of some kind. Many moms suffer in silence, worried that their battle is some form of inadequacy. The “perfect Mom” you see in any social media post may not be experiencing your specific struggles, but she has her own. To illustrate, I asked the mother of two captured in this feature (JaNee) to share some insights into her journey of motherhood so far. She looks so beautiful and serene; surely

she hasn’t had any obstacles transitioning to motherhood? Keep reading.

HOW DID YOU PICTURE THE EARLY DAYS OF MOTHERHOOD BEFORE YOU HAD YOUR FIRST BABY? I'm not quite sure exactly what I expected but I think I was expecting most things to come pretty naturally. I had wanted a baby for some time, so I was just so very excited to actually be getting one, it was almost surreal.

HOW WAS REALITY DIFFERENT THAN THE VISION YOU HAD BEFORE YOUR LITTLE ONE ARRIVED? I was in a very happy, tired, dazed state. I truly felt like I was in my own happy world, just me, my husband, and our new little one. I had prepared myself for breastfeeding and Scarlett was

an amazing nurser – I did deal with some pain early on and was grateful for the resources and support I had. I was so determined to breastfeed and just held in there.

WHAT WERE A FEW THINGS THAT HELPED YOU G ET THROUG H THOSE TOUG HER DAYS AS A MOM? WHO IS YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM? Well, luckily I have a great support system. My husband is wonderful. I also have amazing family - willing to bring meals, hold the baby while I slept, shop for me, or whatever else I needed. I also have wonderful friends that are amazing mommies. Being able to go to them for advice or see if something my baby was doing or I was feeling was normal was probably the most comforting of all! Just knowing that you're not in this alone and that all mommies have hard, crazy days brought me a lot of comfort.

23

| littlepeanutmag.com

HOW HAS ADDING A SECOND BABY BEEN DIFFERENT FROM BEING A FIRST TIME MOM? WERE SOME THINGS EASIER? WHAT WAS MORE CHALLENG ING? River is truly an easy baby but it definitely has been a different experience than it was with my first. This time around I suffered from a mild case of post-partum depression. It was so foreign to me because with Scarlett (my first) I was in such a happy and relaxed state and with River (baby number two) it was the complete opposite. Even though River is a wonderful baby in every way I felt very overwhelmed with two and incompetent as a mother -- even though I had done it all before! I felt like a terrible mother to Scarlett because I couldn't give her the same level of attention and although I'm usually a pretty patient mother I was not at all patient with her when she would act out. My reaction to her acting out was so not like me and that made me feel horrible. I also just felt like I couldn't do anything right. At my six-week check-up my doctor

diagnosed me with a mild case of post-partum depression and created a treatment plan. Since it was only a mild case I opted to take care of it through daily walks outside, a healthy diet and supplements that my doctor recommended. Following that course seemed to work for me but I recommend that any mommies suffering from the same thing to turn to a support system, get help from your healthcare provider, and do what's right for you. I am now approaching four months post-partum and can say I am feeling so much better; I am starting to feel like myself a bit. Sharing our own experiences creates a feeling of sisterhood and common ground. I feel more connected to these beautiful images after reading about JaNee’s own experiences as a mom. Each mom has unique circumstances we can all draw strength from. Especially when we find the courage to share not just the highlights of our days, but the lowlights as well. Those are the moments we realize that life isn’t perfect for any Mom, it’s a journey in which getting through the tough days makes you savor the peaceful ones that much more.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOU!

WHAT IS LIFE LIKE WITH TRIPLETS?

I was raised in San Diego and I love the 90's! I grew up in a super diverse family and a super diverse city. My mom is from Guatemala and grew up in very humble beginnings and my dad is a local Utahan that comes from a BIG family. We had cousins living with us growing up and my mom's mother lived with us my whole life. I didn't get married until I was in my early 30's and so Jeremy and I decided we wanted to start our own family right away. But life had a different plan for us. We had fertility issues that we dealt with for about 3 years and then we finally got pregnant with our three babies! I guess three is our lucky number! We have identical girls, Penelope and Alejandra, and a fraternal son, Ethan. The best thing that came out of those trying years of fertility treatments was that I was able to focus my energy on starting and building Nena & Co. I think it has been a double edged sword during those years. On one hand it distracted me from negative thoughts of possibly never having children but on the other hand, it was so stressful at times that I have to wonder if the stress caused more infertility problems. I'll never know.

We live a completely different life now that Sweet PEA is around. Jeremy and I are avid travelers and took advantage of our time together while it was just he and I. Now we spend our days snuggling babies and figuring out how to be mom and dad. We lead a fast pace life before the kids were here and we both agree that we never thought life could get more busy than what it already was...enter three babies. As much as I love Nena & Co., all I really want to do is love on my babies all day long and maybe fit in a short workout here and there. On the other side of that, I get a lot of satisfaction out of Nena & Co. It is truly such a great creative outlet for me and I’m able to work from home everyday. Getting the babies on a schedule was not only crucial for their well being but mine as well! It has allowed me to care for them while they are awake and know that I have very specific times during the day to answer emails and take meetings. I turned my office at Nena & Co. into a nursery so that when I need to go in to work I can bring the babies with me!

My family heritage is what inspired me to start my company. I am half Guatemalan and maybe its because I don't look like I'm Guatemalan that I have been SO drawn towards that side of my heritage. I love everything about that part of me. Guatemala is so rich with culture and talent that goes under paid and under recognized that I felt a strong desire to work with people and give them the opportunities they deserve with my own creative take on it.

of the most rewarding experiences I've been able to have with my husband and parents. On top of that, you can't help but love the people of Guatemala. We've been able to reconnect with long lost family over there that love meeting their "American cousins". We always visit my mom’s aunt and cousins while we are there and do things like visit the graves of family I never had the opportunity to meet. It's been a way for me to connect more with a side of my that could have been lost forever. I have to say that one of my MOST favorite things is when my Abuelita (my mom's mom) comes and we all go dancing with her sister which is their favorite thing!

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE PARTS ABOUT YOUR JOB?

WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU G IVE OTHER WOMEN + MOTHERS?

My favorite part of my job is sourcing in Guatemala! Before the babies were here it was a family affair to head down to Guatemala with Jeremy and my parents. It’s true what they say about working with family, it’s hard but it has also been one

I think the best advice I can give is don't compare yourself to others. Its great to have goals and role models but live your own life. Make your own story the most important one and learn to be happy with the world you have created.

WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOU TO START NENA & CO.?

63

| littlepeanutmag.com

littlepeanutmag.com

|

64

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK LIFE + FAMILY LIFE? I don't have work and family life balanced. But what I try and do is keep the babies on a solid schedule which helps me stay on a schedule as well. Right now they are sleeping about 18 hours a day so it’s easier to find time to work. I work from home as much as possible and take meetings here when it works but sometimes when I have to go into work during a time that the babies are awake, I will take one or more of them with me to the office. Having a baby with me makes me not feel as guilty and it even gives me a special one on one time with that baby.

AFTER A LONG BUSY WEEK WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO TO UNWIND? I have to say I have a husband that works really hard to be at home with us as much as possible and one of my favorite things he does is 1) gets up at night if one of the babies needs something and 2) on the weekends he'll sometimes just get all the babies fed when they wake up and he lets me sleep in.

65

| littlepeanutmag.com

Who knew getting a little extra sleep as a gift would make you tear up! So I guess you could say just having Jeremy at home is what helps me unwind. Plus we plan a Saturday night date night each week! We try and do something more interesting than dinner and a movie so that we can engage with each other more. For example we did the zip line at Sundance, horseback ridding another time or a concert with some friends! Its has been so crucial for us to get out and be alone.

TELL US HOW NENA & CO. SUPPORTS GUATEMALAN WOMEN? We have worked with hundreds of weavers that are mostly women and just like women who have children here in the US, they look for ways to make money while still being able to watch and care for their children at home. We are committed to paying fair prices and try to educate them on how to value the work they do so they are actually able to make money. We choose to invest in the people we have working for us and we even offer scholarships to the children of our bag makers! We are invested in their future as well!

RUSTIC BOY ROOM DESIG N BY LAY BABY LAY When we think of two words that describe the perfect boys room, rustic + bright come to mind. We love a space that boys can be boys and let their imagination run wild. This room is in a farm house and the bones of it is just incredible. We can’t get enough of the gray stained spruce ceiling, white farm walls and of course the amazing copper pendent that gives a polished industrial look that compliments this room. To get this room it’s all in the details! Head to your local thrift store to find great vintage toys, games, books, sports pennants, artwork and of course a rustic furniture piece or tow would be perfect!

SCANDINAVIAN-STYLE NURSERY DESIG N BY STUDIO LOVE DROPS Scandinavian-style nurseries find that perfect balance between serenity, style and vibrant hue, as they blend pops of color with a relaxing neutral backdrop. This minimal + contemporary look is becoming widely popular in interior design and one that we are completely obsessed with! You can achieve this look by starting with an all white space and complimenting it with touches of neutral colors in bedding + decor pieces. Choosing modern wood furniture pieces is key to exuding timeless style with exquisite modern flair. This is a great design concept to use if you are looking to create a more gender neutral room. Finish it off with fun + unique characters to stimulate your little peanuts imagination.
