EDITOR’S NOTE

T

his time of year is always an exciting one, welcoming warmer days and planning fun + fulfilling adventures with our families as we transition into summer. For me, Spring represents so many things: the anticipation + beginnings of fresher air, getting outside more for family scooter rides, the first time firing-up of the grill for the year and dreaming about sunkissed boys at the local water park. Spring just feels good! Feels like new beginnings + has me looking to the future. Putting together this issue has probably been the most rewarding thus far. We’ve spent so many long hours curating some special pieces that we hope inspire you as they have us. From an in depth feature on showering a mama-to-be in style to spending a day in a historic 1890’s home with an incredibly inspiring mother, illustrator + author, to taking a deeper look into the body of a mother project that encourages us mothers to embrace the beauty of our bodies + the miracles it makes. And a little peanut issue wouldn’t be complete without sharing our favorite fashion looks for the season + family friendly recipes we know will become instant favorites in your home as well. It’s time to rid ourselves of the winter blues and dive into Spring + life head on. Let’s do this!

Who says baby showers have to involve bottles,

diapers, and binkies? Not us! Today’s modern mamas want a stylish party that celebrates their bun in the oven but focuses as much on adult fun as it does on kiddos. Take this boho-chic fête for mama-to-be JaNee Arhets: Inspired by cool bohemian style and featuring an indigo-blue color palette, this bash is all about baby but with a festive, grownup vibe you and your girlfriends will love. “Whenever I design an event, I am inspired by nature,” says floral and event designer Amber Dickson of Amber Reverie. “Early spring boasts some of the most beautiful, delicate blooms in interesting colors like muted lavender, deep plum, and blues that can be hard to find in other seasons. Special spring flowers like blue muscari, lilac, sweet pea and full purple-backed magnolia blossoms inspired the look of this baby shower. I envisioned something a bit bohemian, gender neutral,

and sophisticated enough to celebrate mom, while still bringing in elements of childlike whimsy.” A low, long table sets the scene for a relaxed brunch, lunch, or dinner, and is the perfect match for comfy pillow seating, such as this array of vintage indigo pillows by Mae Woven. “To keep the celebration casually elegant, we opted for a low table where guests could lounge on indigo cushions while they ate and offered advice to the mom-to-be,” says Dickson. Leather mats by Gathre placed under the table create a more plush seating area and help catch spills and crumbs. As for the placesettings, no fancy china needed here—simple white, everyday dishes do the trick. Bottle-blue glassware made from recycled glass reflect the indigo color palette, while wooden utensils lend to the boho vibe and complement the wooden tabletop décor items by Little Sapling Toys.

For a naturally elegant focal point, Dickson brought the great outdoors in by hanging large blooming magnolia branches above the table. “This worked especially well with a low table and evoked the feeling of picnicking beneath a beautiful, blossoming tree,” she says. “Hanging branches above a table is one of my favorite, easy ways to bring nature inside and create an atmosphere for an event. Whether blossoming, covered in leaves or vines, or even bare and twiggy, I love the sculptural impact of hanging branches.” Beneath the magnolia branches, she emphasized the length of the table with scattered olive branches on a simple hand-woven runner and three low floral arrangements in aged clay garden pots. She added height to the setting and a warm glow with tall taper

candles in custom-made wood block candleholders by Little Sapling Toys, which matched the brand’s other wooden items arranged throughout the tabletop. When it comes to decor, why not choose items that double as gifts for the mom of the hour? Little Sapling Toys’ darling animal-themed wooden teethers make perfect (and unexpected) napkin holders, plus a must-have present for mom. Additional modern wooden toys—blocks, stackers, and rattles—add to the overall table setting and make thoughtful take-aways. Natural dyed swaddle blankets by Te Adoro tied to a rope, laundry-line style, add a pop of color and an easy-breezy decor element to the dessert station next to the table.

THE FOOD For this spring celebration, Chef Tom Call of Food Made by Tom chose a light ladies-who-lunch menu followed by plenty of yummy desserts: DRINK Blueberry Lemonade: This simple but refreshing sip is an easy-to-make signature drink, and a fruity nod to the color of the day. SALAD Spring Vegetable Salad: This seasonal salad features King Salmon from British Columbia with a caviar vinaigrette, fennel, radish, and on-trend pickled artichoke. (Chef Tom Call gets his fish flown in fresh, but says you can find similar salmon at Harmon’s or Aquarius Fish Market in Salt Lake City.)

29

| littlepeanutmag.com

DESSERT Berry-Themed Desserts: Why have one dessert when you can have three? Chef Tom Call chose the following for a sweet finale: Tillamook Huckleberry Ice Cream scooped right out of the container and into bowls (why mess with a good thing?); huckleberry profiteroles (aka French cream puffs), a scrumptious alternative to cupcakes or cake; and fromage blanc panna cotta, a tangy treat made with crème fraîche and cream, sweetened with maple syrup, topped with a fresh blueberry and blackberry jam, and served in individual glass jars.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOU Of course! I'm Merrilee, or Mer, and have had a passion for creation for as long as I can remember. I devoured craft books as a kid and grew up in a home where doll houses, train tables, costumes and creative magic were in full production all around me. I'm an illustrator by trade and love creating with and for children. I started getting into blogging with my first born and I began to draw, paint and create things together.

WHAT FIRST INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE A CRAFT BOOK FOR KIDS? You know I had an idea for a book from the very beginning of this blogging journey (remember the part where I read tons of them as a kid)?! I really wanted something for parents and

37

| littlepeanutmag.com

children to be able to pull off the shelf and read together offline. Something to get inspired by and encourage creativity and special moments spent together amidst all the hustle and bustle of todays world.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIG NS? My children and their ages and inclinations are a big inspiration to me. I love to take what they are interested in and use it as an opportunity to dig deeper into a project. It's a great way to get them more interested in being creative. I love recycling something old or discarded and making it beautiful. I'm also very inspired by Europe, peasant everything, childhood playfulness, nature, art, etc. And after trying to gather together all my eclectic tastes I managed to nail down that I like all things Playful French Industrial.

WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK LIFE

PARTS ABOUT YOUR JOB?

AND FAMILY LIFE?

I love having my kids involved. And any time I can sink my teeth into a great creative challenge I'm really fulfilled. I love creating beauty and inspiring others. When I see little ones and parents inspired to create and make, well that's really just the best thing ever.

Oh boy it's nuts for sure. I enjoy it when I can involve my kids in my work, either by creating and crafting with them, playing with them or trying to share how my illustration projects work. But somedays it's absolute madness and I'm not sure there's an ounce of balance in it at all. I just try to take important moments and step away from my work so my family knows I'm there for them (being a work-at-home mom can easily turn into work ALL. THE. TIME.). So I find after school the kids need a few moments of uninterrupted mom time to decompress and we make sure we are all present at dinner. Family dinners are very important in our home. When the kids are in bed Jon and spend a few moments together sharing our day, decompressing, putting on Netflix and even working together which is actually really nice.

AFTER A LONG BUSY WEEK WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO TO UNWIND? Oh man. A long shower in our still unfinished "shower land" often does the trick. I also like to do creative research on things I'm not obliged to, plan some-day trips overseas and LOVE to scour antique malls and flea markets for treasures. (I've even managed to get my kids in love with the hunt!)

WHAT DO YOU + YOUR FAMILY LIKE TO

WHAT QUOTE BEST DESCRIBES YOU +

DO TOG ETHER?

WHAT YOU LIVE BY?

We like adventures. Be it the adventure of renovating a historic 1890's home or traveling somewhere new. Yeah I would say that working together and traveling together creates some of our best moments and memories as a family.

You know I just read something from an email I received from Hillary Rushford of Dean Street Society that really resonated with me. She said "I do not believe I have to choose between doing work that wildly fulfills me, and a graceful spacious life. I don't accept that I have to settle for either an ordinary job or an exhausting life of endless hustle." That about sums up how I feel.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU CAN G IVE TO OTHER WOMEN + MOTHERS? First off to be kind to yourself. You're doing better than you think. And secondly, find and savor those simple moments. Both with yourself and with your family. And third, it's so important to find ways to fill you well so you are inspired in you work and have more of the best you to share with your loved ones.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE DURING YOUR PREG NANCIES AND THE FEELINGS YOU HAD EXPERIENCING THE CHANG ES GOING ON WITH YOUR BODY? The first time I was pregnant with Lue, I was so excited. It felt so new and beautiful. But I definitely remember there was so much unknown. You don't know what exactly will be happening and it such an awkward time when you start filling out physically, but not looking really pregnant yet. You just feel bigger than your old self. I think the excitement carried me through a lot, with it being the first pregnancy. I cried a lot. I was super emotional when pregnant with Lue. Like, laughably emotional. I bawled my eyes out over spilled milk. Ups and downs and so much to process. With Minoux, I knew a lot more of what to expect, but the actual pregnancy seemed harder than Luella's. I missed running and being active.

77

| littlepeanutmag.com

I had to rest a lot more which wasn't "me". I just wanted to keep at life and felt a need to slow myself down. I really tried hard to embrace the pregnancy and seek gratitude through the changes, because I knew I should be so thankful to be pregnant. Even then there were a lot of hard days. I missed my old body. I am huge on accepting all of the feelings and recognizing that it is okay to feel them all, to process them all and to learn from them. Most days, it just felt good to talk about them and recognize the changes happening.

HOW HAS YOUR BODY CHANG ED AFTER HAVING CHILDREN? Haha. Oh man. Well, I recently came across our honeymoon photos and laughed at how different I looked in a bikini. Everything was much perkier and higher you could say! I guess embracing feeling more like a woman and less like a girl. My hair color grew in differently with each pregnancy and now it has hints of some sort of strawberry blonde combination? It's strange. With both girls, right around 3-4 months post-baby my lush locks that grew in during those nine months started transitioning out. I remember standing in the shower crying holding so much blonde hair then kind of snapping out of it, realizing, "okay, it grows back. This is normal. Happens to a lot of women." But no one really talks about that. That's just something that you have to accept early on. I remember having a one and a half week old Luella and standing in the bathroom as milk was shooting out at the mirror. It's just kind of a confusing sight. Throw in some post natal hormones and emotions and it can make for quite a sight.

WHAT STRUGG LES HAVE YOU HAD WITH YOUR MOM BODY? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO OVER COME THESE STRUGG LES? After both births, I felt really anxious to feel my normal self again physically and emotionally. It is all overwhelming having a newborn but then also caring for a connected toddler at the same time, can be so much. I give huge props to Mama's with four kids or more. Incredible just to imagine the amount one has to pour into that many little hearts. I struggled with feeling myself again and feeling my version of beautiful in the beginning of post labor. I hated wearing maternity pants but my regular stuff didn't fit either. Don't get me wrong, I love yoga pants and all, but so many days I just wanted to wear something that felt normal again and my style. I struggled for sure with being patient and accepting myself for where I was at, both physically and emotionally. I had to work really hard on my mental game. I surrounded myself with other humans and moms who uplifted me, accepted me, and encouraged me in big or small ways.

I started working out slowly again which made me feel stronger both physically and emotionally. I took care of myself and tried to not let too many days go by where I drowned in spit up and dirty hair. Even small things for ourselves can be so huge, I believe. Small escapes into a paragraph of a book, creating some sort of inspiring corner in our home that's just ours, or getting outdoors and breathing in the fresh air. Pressing reset in our minds and writing uplifting affirmations to leave around the house to practice mindfulness in. And of course, investing in a really good coffee bean situation.

SOME WOMEN EMBRACE THEIR NEW BODIES AND ACTUALLY FIND THEMSELVES MORE CONFIDENT AND STRONG ER VS. WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG ER, DO YOU FIND THIS TO BE TRUE TO YOU? Absolutely. The labors alone completely changed me to recognize the strength I have as a woman and mom. I knew I had to experience and feel both labors naturally and Luella's labor was insanely long and hard and I felt like I was going to die. But then Minoux was born in the woods with just Max, myself and the midwife was there for the last fifteen minutes. Walking away from that made me feel completely empowered and filled with strength. I love how a woman feels their child leaving their body and it is just so powerful. It's an insanely life changing experience. It made me more confident and strong for sure. I recently asked my mom if she had insecurities about her body when she was my age. She said, "of course!" But thinking back to when I was younger, I don't remember that. My mom never talked about her body in a negative way. We took baths together, saw each others naked bodies and I truly think that changed the way I viewed my body all throughout high school and beyond. A gift we can give our children, especially our daughters, is to LOVE our own bodies. Be naked in front of them. Take care of our bodies and focus on the beautiful parts we have, because we all have them. Embracing our bodies as Moms will teach our children to embrace theirs too, I think.

AFTER HAVING A BABY HOW DO YOU LIKE TO G ET YOUR G ROOVE BACK AND INTO THE SWING OF THINGS? At first, getting my groove back was as small as a quick shower and the distant dream of wearing regular jeans again someday. Haha. I am huge on the idea of fueling ourselves as Moms, to in turn be a better and stronger for our babes. Max encourages me so much to keep my mind creative and even let ideations or dreams settle in as inspiration. I absolutely love creating with my hands. Making floral smudge sticks, eucalyptus wreaths, or cooking and baking. To stop and appreciate the process of making a meal. It really helps me feel "human" again instead of just "Mom". We go outside a lot. Even in the winter, we'll bundle up and get outdoors as much as possible and I can't even explain how that makes me

81

| littlepeanutmag.com

feel so new again. Breathing in the fresh air and feeling the outdoor elements on my face. When Minoux was around 2 months old, I started to just intentionally move my body everyday for 10-15 minutes. It felt overwhelming to have an entire workout program but knew I could be in my living room and do five push-ups, then two days later try seven, then see how many more I could do each day. I did squats while holding Minoux and in the same way, I never really set intense goals for myself but accepted where I was at each day. "Just challenge your body everyday Johnna." It maybe sounds crazy but I just tried to incorporate some sort of focused movement for myself even somedays were just less than five minutes, but it felt like I was doing something for myself physically. I know it also actually physiologically altered my mood in amazing ways too.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU G IVE TO OTHER MOTHERS WHO STRUGG LE WITH EMBRACING THEIR MOM BODIES? I would say to give grace to yourself. And then give it again and again and again. We are giving so much of ourselves to these little hearts and don't be afraid of self care. Don't lock yourself up for the entire duration of their childhood and forget that you are also a human. It is not selfish to refuel ourselves and invest in the replenishment of ourselves physically, creatively, or emotionally. Carve out time each week where you blow off the laundry or dishes and make yourself feel beautiful again. Maybe that's doing a workout and feeling strong again, painting your nails (even though, seriously who has time to let nail polish dry?), cooking or

87

| littlepeanutmag.com

baking something that YOU like to eat instead of what the kids will eat. I am a huge advocate for promoting active self change and practicing a positive mindset. If you don't like the way you feel, take action to change it, even if it's the smallest action ever. Be brave enough to take care of you. Find your most beautiful aspects about yourself and cherish them. It is not selfish to take care of ourselves as Moms. One of the best gifts we can give to our children is to have a happy Mom taking care of them.

SCANDINAVIAN STYLE NURSERY DESIG N BY KERRYANN CARROLL

The Scandinavian design movement has really taken over and become increasingly popular in interior design because of its vast and eclectic taste that is characterized by simplicity, functionality and minimalism. The calm, muted tones of pale blue, cool grey, white and cream are seen everywhere in Scandinavian interiors and this color scheme has almost become the trademark of European design. This minimalist aesthetic approach is perfect for nursery design + kids spaces because it really creates an airy + functional environment that is truly a work of art!

MOODY G IRLS ROOM DESIG N BY LA DE DAH KIDS

On the ip side we are also seeing a new trend of more moody colors entering in interior design world which is only the natural transition from the bright + white design style. We for one are totally in love with this style and the pairing of deeper colors + pops of lighter shades. We are obsessed with the color palette of this girls room and the use of modern shapes + quirky animal decor pieces. Get this look by painting one wall (or the entire room) in a darker shade of gray or even black!

AVOCADO TOAST 4 WAYS SIMPLE POACHED EGG AVOCADO TOAST - 1 egg - 1 slice whole grain bread - 1/2 avocado - 1 tablespoons shaved Parmesan cheese - salt and pepper for topping - fresh herbs (parsley, thyme, or basil) for topping

1. Bring a pot of water to boil (use enough water to cover the eggs when they lay in the bottom). Drop the metal rims (outer rim only) of two mason jar lids into the pot so they are laying flat on the bottom. When the water is boiling, turn off the heat and carefully crack the eggs directly into each rim. Cover the pot and poach for 5 minutes (4 for super soft, 4:30 for soft, 5 or more for semi-soft yolks). 2. While the eggs are cooking, toast the bread and smash the avocado on each piece of toast. When the eggs are done, use a spatula to lift the eggs out of the water. Gently pull the rim off of the eggs (I do this right on the spatula, over the water) and place the poached eggs on top of the toast. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and fresh herbs.

AVOCADO + GOAT CHEESE + LIME ON TOAST - 1 thick slices of your favorite bread - 1/2 avocado - juice of 1/2 lime - 1 teaspoon chopped mint + extra for garnish - 1 tablespoon goat cheese - olive oil - salt + pepper

1. Toast your bread. While it’s in the toaster, halve, pit and peel your avocado and scoop out the flesh with a spoon then pop it in a bowl. 2.
