Welcome to The City of Liverpool College If you choose to study at The City of Liverpool College you will be joining one of the largest Further Education colleges in the sector and a community of more than 17,000 students. The City of Liverpool College is the first choice for post-16 quality education in Liverpool. If university is your goal, the subjects you take at sixteen can have a major impact on the courses you can study at degree level. Many university courses will build on the knowledge already gained in specific GCSE and A-level subjects. However, they may also require you to have specific A-levels, in what is known as the facilitating subjects – maths and further maths; English; physics; biology; chemistry; geography; history; languages. If you’re not sure which degree course to choose, one of the best ways of keeping your options open is to study your two favourite A-levels from the facilitating subjects list. However, if you know what you want to study, look at the different college or university websites for more information, or check out the UCAS course search option to find out the specific A-levels needed to get on to a course.

Careers and Destinations The skills you develop with us will enable you to progress to the next level. There are five major types of graduate occupation:

Traditional graduate occupations There are established professions for which the normal entry route has been via an undergraduate degree programme. Examples include barrister, doctor, engineer, higher/secondary education teachers and research scientists.

Modern graduate occupations The newer professions, particularly in management, IT and creative vocational careers, have evolved through demands from employers for well educated, highly skilled staff. Examples are accountant, computer programmer and journalist.

New graduate occupations Areas of employment, many in new or expanding occupations where the route into the professional area is now via an undergraduate degree programme. Examples include marketing manager, physiotherapist and computer games designer. For course information and entry requirements

Niche graduate occupations Occupations where the majority of recruits are not graduates, but have stable or growing specialist niches requiring higher level skills and knowledge. Examples are leisure centre managers, hotel managers, nursing and retail managers.

Non-graduate occupations All jobs that do not fall into the previous four categories are considered non-graduate occupations i.e. that a degree is not required to enter these occupations. If you have some career ideas already, check entry requirements in related degree subjects on either the UCAS website (Course Search section) or on the Connexions Jobs4u website.
