An open letter from the Principal to prospective students, parents, carers and advisers. I took up post at the college as its new Principal last June and I am delighted to have the opportunity of welcoming you here. There are a wide variety of reasons why you should consider joining us to further your studies and your journey towards a career. • We are an outstanding college that is both one of the largest and one of the best in the country. We are also the only Grade one FE college on Merseyside and one of only eighteen nationally that Ofsted has rated 'outstanding' twice or more. • We are the only FE college in the City of Liverpool. More than a third of all 16-18 year olds in the City study with us. The reason we can support so many people is because we have an exceptionally wide range of qualifications and career paths for you to choose from, and strong relationships with employers to help you into work with good qualifications. • Our students are respected as individuals and as adults. Staff are on hand to give you support when you need it, and space is provided for you to learn as an individual in our fully equipped learning resource centres.
It’s your choice.
• Many employers in Liverpool already have former students of the college on their staff - often in very senior positions. They understand and value the vocational qualifications you can achieve at our College. We work directly with many employers in the private, public and voluntary sectors through Apprenticeships and continued training for their staff. This means that we keep up to date with what employers need, equipping you with better skills to find employment and giving you a better outcome. • The College has invested £50 million in university quality facilities and learning resources. You don't need to leave the College to gain many Higher Education qualifications. However, if you do decide to go on to university, the qualifications you achieve, alongside the practical experience that forms part of your course, are highly valued by admissions tutors nationwide. When you apply to the College, you’ll have the opportunity to tell us all about ‘you’ – your circumstances, and any specific requirements you might have, whether personal, physical or career-related. This is important, as we can tailor our support to enable you to learn, develop and achieve in the way that’s best for you. First of all, you’ll be given your own Personal Tutor. Your tutor is not just there for your learning. They will care for you as a person, listen to any worries you might have, discover your hopes and goals and arrange further support if required. If you’re under 18 years, your tutor will also keep your parents up to speed on your progress. Our dedicated Learning Support Team has extensive knowledge of different needs and how best to support them. They can help you with practical arrangements, both in class and around college, whether you have specific learning difficulties, dyslexia, physical disabilities, hearing and visual impairments, or other personal care needs. Sometimes students need a little extra encouragement to achieve their full potential. Our team of highly skilled Learning Mentors are available to give you one-to-one support, offering you a listening ear, motivating you, improving your study skills and helping you to progress with complete confidence.

Through our National Skills Academies – employer-led centres of excellence across a range of industries – Liverpool Community College is producing students with sought-after and world-class skills.

Prepared for work Learning is one thing – doing is another. Most of our programmes provide opportunities to widen your knowledge around a particular specialist area. Part of your course may include working to a ‘live brief’ or securing work experience that gives real insight into the potential opportunities available in your chosen career. Expert help Many of our staff are fully experienced industry professionals, who know the importance of staying ahead of their game. Ongoing development of their specialist knowledge means you are taught skills for the jobs of the future.

What are they? Much more than centres of learning, National Skills Academies (NSAs) deliver specialised, up-to-the-minute training in the skills and technical knowledge that businesses need. Shaped and led by employers, NSAs are actively developing a UK workforce that can compete with the rest of the world. The College holds National Skills Academies in: • • • • •

However, it’s important to know that A-levels are not the only route into Higher Education. There are many paths you can take – it’s all about finding the one that suits you best. A-levels / Level 3 BTEC Diplomas and NVQs The College offers a huge range of nationally recognised qualifications, with the extra skills that universities desire built in to the programmes. Whether you choose to do A-levels, a BTEC (equivalent to 3 A-levels) or NVQs that develop practical and industry-recognised skills, you can prepare for further study and progression in your chosen career. Apprenticeships An apprenticeship is an excellent way to earn while you learn. You gain an accredited qualification, while your employer benefits from having a well-trained, relevantly skilled and dedicated member of staff. An apprenticeship can also be a passport to higher education qualifications, such as an HND, HNC or degree at the college or university. Access to HE and Foundation Degrees Often suited to adults looking to return to education, or those wishing to build up specialist skills, these courses – designed in partnership with employers and universities – provide an excellent platform to higher education.

Liverpool Employers Value Their Apprentices
The future of Liverpool’s businesses depends greatly on the quality of the new staff they take on now. For many employers and talented and motivated students an Apprenticeship is the right option to kick-start a successful career. Apprentices earn a salary while learning the skills needed in their chosen occupation. Through the College, apprentices gain nationally recognised qualifications proving their specific skills. For many individuals, the initial starting point is at NVQ Level 2, which is the equivalent of five GCSEs A* - C. In many cases, there is the opportunity to progress to a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship, officially recognised as equivalent to two A-levels. With the continuing support of their employers and in increasingly better paid jobs, many apprentices go on to gain higher education qualifications at the College such as HNC, HND and Foundation Degrees. The College offers an exceptional range of over 60 Apprenticeship frameworks, providing career pathways in nine major occupational areas in demand in the region. We work with many employers in the private, public and voluntary sectors and will help you to identify Apprenticeship opportunities to apply for. You don’t need to get an offer of an Apprenticeship before you apply to study at the College.

Excellent links with employers and universities The College enjoys strong partnerships with universities awarding our degree qualifications. We meet frequently to ensure our higher level diplomas and degrees are constantly updated. Regular consultation with employers also maintains our training at current industry standards. Our university partners are Liverpool John Moores University, Edge Hill University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Liverpool Hope University.

Why study higher education at the College? We provide quality teaching that’s relevant to your career. Students also like our industry-standard facilities and small class sizes, which mean you get the attention you deserve from our dedicated teachers. Many people achieve their Higher Education qualifications through part-time study while at work.
Buy now pay later Our fees for full-time or part-time study are highly competitive. Did you know you don’t have to pay HE course fees until you start work and earn more than £21,000 per year? 3 Higher level qualifications explained Higher National Certificate (HNC) A higher national certificate is a work-related Level 5 qualification equivalent to about one year’s full-time university study. It is designed to give you the skills you need for a particular profession. Higher National Diploma (HND) A higher national diploma is similar to a HNC, but counts for about two years’ full-time university study. It is also a vocational Level 5 qualification valued by employers. Foundation Degree A Foundation Degree is a Level 5 qualification that combines academic study and work-based learning. It is specifically designed to give you the skills and knowledge to progress to a full Bachelor’s degree. Students unsure of their skill levels can take Foundation Degrees before progressing to a full degree.

Live and learn Our multi-million-pound campus facilities, with their pioneering buildings, cutting-edge technology and gleaming recreational spaces, provide inspirational surroundings for study and student life. City centre locations Our central locations mean that transport links to college are excellent (city centre campuses are approximately five to ten minutes’ walk from Queen Square bus station and Central/Lime Street train stations). Advice and support The Learning Exchange is our central one-stop shop to all the services important to your learning. Here, you’ll find helpful advice and friendly support for all kinds of student issues, from finance and fees to equipment, childcare, counselling and travel. Student services can also help you with UCAS or other course applications, and will often identify any extra support you might need.

What makes the Learning Exchange unique is its seamless combination of state-of-the-art learning environment with top-class leisure space. You’ll find everything you need in one place – from Learning Resource Centre and student support services to a well-stocked cafe, spacious meeting hub and fully equipped sports hall and gym. Conveniently located within five minutes’ walk of the city centre, the Learning Exchange offers easy, flexible access to transport and attractions in the city. An unbeatable resource The Learning Exchange is home to a first-class study centre over two floors. Facilities include PCs, an Apple Mac suite, individual and group study areas, Wi-Fi, self-serve booking terminals as well as electronic and traditional reading resources – all aimed at aiding your research.
Enrichment The Learning Exchange is home to the Enrichment team. Check out some of the amazing trips, events and activities organised throughout the year. Onsite Nursery The Learning Exchange has a fully equipped nursery for use by students in the city centre campus.

The Arts Centre, Myrtle Street
The Arts Centre has established itself as the leading arts teaching and learning institution on Merseyside. Providing specialist arts and technical facilities, recording studios, premier dance and drama facilities – as well as first-class photography, fashion and multimedia studios. More than 2,000 students study here. It is a founder college for the National Skills Academy for creative and cultural skills and a lead provider for fashion. Bankfield Road Our refurbished Bankfield Road site offers a wide range of programmes in business and legal/medical secretarial courses, first step return to learn courses. Students can access a fully equipped learning resource centre as well as an on-site drop-in study centre (DISC). Nursery facilities and careers advice and guidance are also available on this site. Bankfield Road centre offers easy access to Queen’s Drive by bus and car.

Clarence Street This centre is for students aged 16-18 years studying A-levels and GCSEs. It is also home to adults studying Access to Higher Education courses. All students have access to well-resourced facilities and modern teaching equipment. Specialist information technology courses are also taught here in purpose-built IT suites. More than 2,700 students attend this centre. The Clarence Street centre is an approved National Skills Academy for Financial Services training, and works with a number of local financial services employers to identify their training and development needs. The college is also working with local schools to develop academic opportunities within the financial services sector.

Duke Street Duke Street is our centre for all service industry courses, including catering, hospitality, travel, tourism and leisure as well as hair, beauty and holistic therapies. This centre accommodates over 3,100 students. The bakery department at Duke Street holds the ‘badge of excellence’ from the National Skills Academy for Food and Drink Manufacturing. It joins an elite membership of providers recognised for expertise in bakery and confectionery training. Academy Restaurant and Salons Duke Street is also home to the College’s Academy Restaurant and Academy Hair and Beauty salons. Both restaurant and salons are commercial ventures providing authentic working environments for students in training. Vauxhall Road Vauxhall Road is a purpose-built facility for all construction and engineering courses. Facilities include fully equipped workshops for a number of trades, including bricklaying, painting and decorating, joinery, plastering, plumbing, heating and ventilation. The site also houses a motor vehicle and motor cycle repair workshops. This centre is a National Skills Academy for Environmental Technologies. It is also the lead hub for the Greater Merseyside and West Cheshire Skills Academy in Environmental Technologies. Students have easy access to a learning resource centre, student services, careers advice and guidance and a drop- in study centre. Situated close to Liverpool city centre, Vauxhall Road offers easy access by bus, car and train (approximately ten minutes’ walk from Moorfields train station).

Personal development During your time in college, you will be supported and encouraged to work hard to achieve success. However, we also want you to be involved in student life. At Liverpool Community College, we offer a wide range of opportunities that will enhance and enrich your learning experience. You come to the College to gain good qualifications but we also want your time here to be interesting, fun, exciting and rewarding. This experience, combined with the knowledge and skills you learn along the way, will prove invaluable as you move into employment or on to university. Our fabulous new Learning Exchange has been built with you in mind. Get active at the fully equipped sports hall, gym or dance and fitness studio, meet up with friends in the amazing social spaces, and unwind at the lively cafe. There are also plenty of opportunities for trips, events and activities organised by our college Enrichment team throughout the year.
Be active. Experience. Enjoy. Feeling adventurous? Join one of the weekly sporting clubs or activities on offer. Or try your hand at one of the many taster sessions, including cookery, cycle maintenance, or the popular First Aid course. You could even find help setting up your own club or group so you can get together with like-minded friends.

Volunteering Why not put your spare time to good use by getting involved in some really worthwhile projects? Volunteering gives you a great sense of achievement and is the perfect way to gain valuable experience. It will make your CV or UCAS application really stand out from the crowd.
In print and on air Are you good with the written word, do have ideas about how things should look, or are you dying to get behind a microphone and talk? Then use your talents to work on the student magazine or our very own radio station. This is the ideal opportunity to see your words, photos or designs in print, and test your broadcasting skills in the studio.
Giving something back As well as all the fun, energetic activities that you’ll want to be involved with at the college, we also organise year-round events that you can get involved with in your local community. Projects include: • • • • •

7 Student Voice Have your say: The Student Union The Student Union acts as the voice of its students, checking that your best interests are always considered by the college before decisions are made. The Student Union also makes sure that all students are represented, and raises awareness around important issues such as student welfare and equality. Building a community: Learning Exchange We listened to what students told us they wanted. The Learning Exchange is our answer. It combines an inspirational learning environment with great social spaces – a one-stop-shop for all your learning and recreational needs (and then some!). Economic Drivers The Future Workforce Liverpool City Region Over the next decade, there will be a shift in training from the traditional skills that were once the mainstay of the region to a new, multi-skilled workforce. The College offers the widest choice of qualifications and career paths for the skills needed to support the four growth areas that are set to transform the economy in and around the city.

Economic Drivers
The Future Workforce
SuperPort It’s estimated that around 16,000 jobs will be needed for building and operating Liverpool’s SuperPort. It’s also expected that the SuperPort will stimulate growth of other business sectors, creating more jobs in professional services, ICT, maritime and tourism. Investment around the SuperPort should also stimulate long-term economic growth in the region, and enable Liverpool to regain its past prominence as an international gateway for goods and passenger transport.
Visitor Economy The Visitor Economy currently supports 37,000 jobs in retail, hotels, restaurants, conference venues, visitor attractions, cultural institutions, transport and tours, and the creative industries. The region’s natural attractions and wealth of culture and heritage sites will help the Visitor Economy grow from £1.3 billion annual turnover to £2 billion by 2020. The Visitor Economy will also link strongly with other key areas for growth, in particular, Liverpool’s SuperPort.

Low Carbon Economy Approximately 8,000 workers are currently employed in the energy and environmental technologies sector. New opportunities have been identified in areas such as renewable energy generation. Low carbon initiatives, including the River Mersey’s tidal energy potential, could generate a further 7,000 jobs in the region by 2015.
Knowledge Economy Liverpool City Region has the capabilities to expand on its science, technology and knowledge based expertise by attracting businesses to the area that are reliant on innovation and excellence in research and development. It will allow the region to compete more effectively for investment, ideas and trade in an increasingly competitive global environment.

Courses and how to apply What you need to know We offer a range of courses to suit all styles of learning. Check out the choices below and let our experienced advice and guidance team make sure you’re on the right track for your future career.
Which route do you choose? Vocational route Vocational qualifications (BTEC diplomas, certificates, NVQs) are great courses with a clear career focus. This route leads you on to Higher Education qualifications at the College or university or into employment. Apprenticeship route Apprenticeships are ideal if you want to combine work with study. You come to college part-time and get the best of both worlds. Your qualifications can also gain you admission to Higher Education at the College whilst progressing in your career or at university. Academic route A-levels and GCSEs are academic qualifications. They can be subjects you’ll know from school such as English, maths and science or brand new subjects such as psychology or media. This route can lead to you gaining higher level vocational qualifications or Higher Education at the College or university or into employment.

If you gain at least 4/5 GCSEs at grade C or above, or have a good BTEC Level 2 Diploma, you can enter directly at Level 3. A good grade at Level 3 allows progression to a relevant Foundation Degree at the college or university.
If your GCSE grades are D-E, you may be able to go straight onto a Level 2 course. These include BTEC Level 2 Diplomas or an Apprenticeship (if you’re working).
If your GCSE grades are F-G you can get started on a Level 1 course that's right for you. These will help to improve your English, maths and IT skills, and prepare you for further study.

How much will it cost? Under 19 Tuition for full-time further education courses is free for most under 19 year olds. And if you’re aged 16 to 18 you may be eligible for support from the college’s Learner Support Fund, depending on your family income. 19+ All courses have a fee attached to them. But the good news is, you may be entitled to help with fees, additional financial support or help with travel costs from college, depending on family income.
