Information for international students Liverpool Community College welcomes international students. You may choose to study one of a range of Level 4 courses which meet Tier 4 visa regulations. These courses provide professional qualifications for the work place as well as progression routes into higher education (HE) further studies.
Our full range of HE courses is listed on page 13 and this also gives you page numbers for more detailed course information. You must check this carefully before you apply as not all courses meet the UK Border Agency requirements for full time study. If we get applications from groups of students we may be able to make special arrangements for discrete HND programmes to meet the UKBA hours of study requirements. International Foundation Pathways For students who have completed high school and other studies but do not have the subject qualifications they need for HE, our International Foundation Pathways provide one year of study alongside British students to gain nationally recognised qualifications. These courses are at Level 3 and include English language and academic study skills support. All courses include IELTS preparation to improve scores and skill needed for HE. Two year Foundation Pathways are also available including A-levels and Extended National Diplomas – see website for further details: www.liv-coll.ac.uk
What qualifications do I need? The qualifications of overseas students are assessed through the organisation called UK NARIC which will confirm what your qualifications are equivalent to in the British education system. You will need subject specific qualifications for HE studies otherwise you will have to take a Foundation Pathway to gain the subject knowledge.

English language qualifications are set by the Border Agency and current Tier 4 regulations state that you must have already achieved a B2 qualification in English language and be ready to study at C1. Examples of being ready to study at this level include the following: • a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 or above • Cambridge PET with Distinction • Cambridge First Certificate • International Baccalaureate
• Pearson Test of English score of 53 or above • TOEFL score of 72 or above • TOEIC score of 1095 or above.
If you find it difficult to provide evidence it is a quick process to take an IELTS Test or the on-line Pearson Test of English for results within 2 days www.pearsonpte.com/PTEACADEMIC/Pages/home.aspx.
How do I apply for a visa? • Complete the college overseas student application form
(certificates and other documents must be transcribed into English)
• Send the application form and all requested evidence to the address on the form
- Proof of financial independence. This should be a bank statement showing that you have sufficient funds to cover the tuition fees and UK living costs for the full year
• You must include: - Copy of your passport showing the number, photograph and expiry date - Proof of your English level at B2 or above (see UKBA list of approved English Language tests in your application pack) - Evidence of your qualifications showing that you meet the entry requirements for the HE course
• When we have all your documents, we will send you an unconditional offer letter asking for your deposit and CAS fee. YOU MUST STILL WAIT FOR YOUR UCAS OFFER • After we receive your deposit we will apply for your CAS number and send you your CAS statement.
What if my English is not good enough? Liverpool Community College can offer full-time English Language study for an academic year or for pre-sessional periods of study e.g. three or six months, in order to prepare for HE level studies or to prepare for an International Foundation Pathway. All studies include academic English and study skills and preparation for an independence IELTS test. If you study English full-time you will have the opportunity to visit course tutors and apply for a course whilst in the UK to ensure you make the right choices. You can also receive academic English support once you have started your course for up to six hours per week, and for as long as you need it.

Higher level qualifications explained Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) If you want to gain a recognised higher level qualification and develop skills and knowledge to do a specific job, a HNC or HND could be for you. HNCs and HNDs are known to focus on 'learning by doing' and can prepare you for a new career, or help you to progress in your current work. HNCs and HNDs are provided by over 400 universities and further education colleges. HNCs can take one year to complete full time and two years part time. HNDs take two years full time and can also be taken part time (which takes longer).
Foundation Degree A Foundation Degree is a Level 5 qualification that combines academic study and work-based learning. It is specifically designed to give you the skills and knowledge to progress to a full Bachelor’s degree. Students unsure of their skill levels can take a Foundation Degree before progressing to a full degree.
Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ) The Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ) has been designed by the higher education sector, and describes all the main higher education qualifications. HNCs are at level 4 and HNDs and Foundation degrees are at level 5, while bachelors degrees are at level 6.
When and how to apply for a HE course at College Full-time higher education course You'll need to apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) for full time programmes. You can apply using the online application system on the UCAS website www.ucas.ac.uk Don't worry - you don't have to complete the form in one go. You'll get a username and password so you can take your time and get it right. There is a fee for applying through UCAS. This is reduced if you only apply for one course. You can also find up to date application fees on the UCAS website.

Learn while you earn Higher Vocational qualifications Higher vocational qualifications cover a wide range of careers and come in five different qualification types. The college has an exceptional range of over 50 individual higher education WBL qualifications. These programmes allow the flexibility to work and study at the same time, giving students, employers and employees the option to efficiently develop and nurture skills within the work place. The qualifications involve several different course related elements/units involving a combination of class room based learning and/or work place assessment. The college provides industry standard facilities and outstanding tutors to ensure you get the very best experience from your chosen programme. Higher education WBL programmes vary in duration but will typically cover a 12 to 24 month period.
Higher apprenticeships Higher Apprenticeships provide a great route into higher education and enable Higher Apprentices to earn a salary whilst studying towards a higher education certificate or foundation degree. The apprenticeship frameworks are structured towards full time employment, with one day per week dedicated to study and learning. The frameworks can vary in length but typically cover a period of between 12 and 24 months. The college has an exceptional range of over 20 Higher Apprenticeship Frameworks, providing career pathways in seven major occupational areas in high demand throughout the region. We work with many employers in the private, public and voluntary sectors and will help to identify apprenticeship opportunities to apply for. You don’t need to get an offer of an Apprenticeship before you apply to study at Liverpool Community College. Entrepreneurship and employability Develop your entrepreneurial skills while studying! Students enrolled on HE and FE programmes at Liverpool Community College are offered many opportunities and support to develop their entrepreneurial skills. Business start-up support, guidance and mentoring programmes and business start-up qualifications are run alongside regular entrepreneurial events in College. Students have the opportunity to take part in entrepreneurial challenges whilst gaining experience working on business plans and researching new business ideas. Entrepreneurial initiatives are offered as part of the College’s Student Entrepreneurship programme, launched in September 2012. It is built on Liverpool Community College’s highly successful Enterprise Club which established a rich variety of enrichment activities that have played an integral part of College curriculum over the past few years.

Building Services Engineering Foundation Degree The overall aim of the programme is to develop knowledge, understanding and intellectual skills appropriate to a variety of roles within the building engineering services sector. The programme will address both building services engineering design and commercial project management practices and as such it is suited to those engaged in the industry in either of these capacities. It is also well suited to people in other sectors of the built environment who are required to interface with the building services engineering sector i.e. facilities management, etc. The programme provides a stimulating and challenging study that accurately reflects the activities of the building services engineering industry to enable students to pursue an effective, productive and responsible career in the sector. There are three different pathways through the programme to reflect the specialist role of the individual; Mechanical Building Services, Electrical Building Services or Commercial Management. The programme is validated by Liverpool John Moores University and as such students have full access to the facilities and resources of the University in addition to those of Liverpool Community College. The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineering (CIBSE) and is recognised as meeting the academic requirements in full for Licentiate and Associate membership of the Institution. In addition the Mechanical and Electrical pathways through the programme are accredited as meeting in full the academic requirements for Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) registration and in part for Incorporated Engineer (Ian) registration. The programme has also been jointly "Endorsed" by Summit Skills (the Sector Skills Council for the industry) and Foundation Degree Forward.

The endorsement process is designed to confirm that the course content matches the skills that employers require from employees working in their sector and meets the requirements of the industries foundation degree framework specification. At present this is the only foundation degree in the sector with this endorsement. Future opportunities, career and progression routes Subject to the availability of places within the university, successful completion of this foundation degree provides articulated progression to the final year of either: *BSc (Hons) Building Services Engineering (Project Management) *BENG (Hons) in Building Services Engineering. Qualification(s) Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Building Services Engineering. This is a level 5 qualification in the National Qualifications Framework.

Entry requirements Students are expected to be employed in an appropriate capacity within the industry. Those not in full time employment in an appropriate environment must satisfy the WBL element of the programme via work placement. The responsibility for obtaining work placement is the student's but the college will assist in obtaining a suitable work placement through its existing contacts with local employers. Candidates will normally need to have a BTEC national certificate or diploma in an appropriate area but non-standard entry onto the foundation degree programme may be possible at the discretion of the Programme Leader. Duration and attendance There are three modes of attendance available: - Block release residential programme of 35 hours per week for 13 weeks for 2 years, requiring a residential component.
This mode is exclusive to companies and their employees under special contract. Companies interested in this ‘closed programme' should contact the College for details. - Day release programme of 10 hours per week for 36 weeks for two years, followed by 6 hours per week for 36 weeks in the third year. - Day release for those with a HNC in Building Services Engineering will usually be 6 hours per week for 1 year. Core subjects include: Mathematics, Health & Safety & Welfare, Building Services Science, Group Design projects. Future opportunities, career and progression routes This HNC in Building Services Engineering has been designed to provide the first of three stages leading to an Honours Degree in Building Services Engineering. Students who complete the HNC can progress directly to the second stage of the Foundation Degree in Building Services and from there to the BSc or BEng in Building Services Engineering.

Construction and the Built Environment Higher National Certificate This course is aimed at people of all ages working in a technical or supervisory position within the construction industry. Design and Fashion Technology Foundation Degree This Foundation Degree is validated by Liverpool John Moores University Design Students will be introduced to a range of design research methods from a variety of sources (galleries, museums, books, websites, etc) as a starting point for inspiration and development of fashion related tasks. Students will also be introduced to lay planning and grading, using CAD. Manufacturing technology The module will have cumulative activities to introduce and build upon technical skills related to manufacturing. The work produced in this module will build sound technical understanding of garment construction techniques with consideration given to fabric types, appropriate joining techniques and the link between cost and profit. Computer applications in fashion Lectures will be delivered to introduce and give a general knowledge of the use and functions of CAD/CAM in the fashion industry. Students will develop the branding of their personal design for a specific market and customer profile. Fashion professional practice This module will give students the opportunity to build an e-portfolio demonstrating their professional development and future career prospects. Work Based Learning Learning within a working environment is central to the learning on this programme. Students will meet challenges and workrelated problems that are central to building their skills within the industry. Preparation for placement and the completion of placement and work-based learning activities will contribute to the fashion professional practice e-portfolio.
Entry Requirements GCSE at grade C or above in three subjects, preferably including English and maths and a textile or arts based subject. Standard entry candidates will normally need as a minimum, and in appropriate subjects, BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma at Level 3 or 2 A-levels at grade ‘C’.

Mature entry is also possible based on industrial experience.

Module Assessment Assessment methods vary according to the nature of each module. There will be some written work required for all modules, which could be in the form of a report or essay, or a different form of written assignment such as a presentation or musical composition or arrangement. The more practical modules require you to keep some sort of log of your activities, and there are periodic exams in music theory and solo performance. Assessment dates and deadlines will be given at the beginning of the academic year, and you will be provided with written and verbal feedback within an agreed period and as soon as possible after each assessment. Work-based element In the first year the placements are education and community music based. We have a number of contacts throughout Merseyside, however students often prefer to organise a placement through their previous or sibling's school or local community centre etc. Second year students may need more help to secure a suitable placement, but the music and music technology departments have a large number of local music industry contacts who are willing to offer placements. However students, particularly in the second year, are responsible for identifying and negotiating their own placements.

Applied Biology Higher National Certificate/Diploma The subject of Biology encompasses studies from the atomic to the planetary - or even extra-terrestrial scale. As such you may be reluctant, at an early stage in your biological career, to limit your studies to a narrow field. The HNC/D at Liverpool Community College provides an excellent grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required for progressing onto further studies, such as a BSc, or into employment. The modules covered on this course offer a wide variety of subjects extending from molecular and cellular biology to biodiversity and cover all of the five kingdoms. With an emphasis on taught modules, delivered through a diverse range of methods that will reflect the diversity of learners' needs and a high level of practical work, you will develop your technical, numerical and analytical skills. The HNC/D integrates apprenticeships and employer involvement via a flexible approach and by seeking partnerships in the work place. Although the emphasis of career development and employment through this nationally recognised course is clearly in the biological field, it is by no means exclusive as the many skills acquired may be applied to other areas in commerce, management, teaching etc. Direct progression on to a suitable BSc or employment in the biological sciences is also possible. Students may go on to careers in biomedical diagnostics, nutrition, laboratory analysis, research and development, ecological sciences, conservation, education and many other related areas. Dental Technology Foundation Degree This is a three year part time course, which develops the theoretical and practical knowledge of each student through set programmes within the department. The students will learn all aspects of dental technology, from health and safety to crown and bridge construction. Early Years Practice (Sector Endorsed) Foundation Degree This is a full time employment-related educational qualification which will provide students with a range of specialist knowledge and skills required within the Early Years sector. The Foundation Degree is awarded by Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). This is a level 4/5 qualification which has been developed in collaboration with Early Years' employers, LJMU and other partner colleges. The Foundation Degree is delivered in a variety of ways, for example: through lectures, workshops, students led seminars, private and independent study. Work based learning will be a key part of a student's learning. Students will be using their workplace, including a chosen mentor and everyday duties, as a key learning resource throughout the programme. The course comprises of 5 modules at Certificate Level, which is equivalent to Level 4 first year degree level; and 5 modules at diploma level, which is equivalent to Level 5 second year degree level. Tourism and Leisure or Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality Foundation Degree The rationale for Foundation Degrees centres on the 'thinking practitioner' by linking theory and practice to produce effective management and operational skills. The delivery of the modules will reflect this. Lifelong Learning Sector Diploma in Teaching This is the required professional qualification for those who carry out the full teaching role in the Lifelong Learning Sector. This role involves having responsibility for the planning and delivery of courses, teaching across different levels and or curriculum areas, delivering courses of different lengths and designing learning resources. The DTLLS is a two year modular programme and is assessed through course work and practical assessment of teaching. During the first year you will undertake four modules – these are designed to develop skills in the following areas: • Planning courses and sessions • Analysing effective inclusive practice and using a range of relevant teaching and learning strategies • Identifying a range of theories and principles of learning and communication and applying them to your teaching • Carrying out valid legislation and initiatives that impact on your role in the classroom and engaging in a process of reflection and analysis to develop your professional practice. Students will also identify their own development needs in relation to literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and consider how they can develop these skills in their students.
