Celebrating Valentine’s Day with the Entire Family hile some might consider Valentine’s Day just a Hallmark holiday, it’s actually a great opportunity to have some fun with your children and shower them with love! Not just for lovers anymore, February 14th is the perfect day to teach your children about the importance of caring for others. Celebrate with a simple “I love you” first thing in the morning and then try out some of these other ideas throughout the day…your children will benefit from the extra attention and the focus on love!

W

TALK LOVE Make it a point to have at least one family meal on Valentine’s Day, whether it be breakfast or dinner. During the meal, talk about Valentine’s Day and love…spend that precious time together telling them how much you love them and how much they mean to you. Talk about what love really is and what it means to you. Talk about the love you have you have for your spouse, your family, your friends…and how those loves are different, but so meaningful and important. Ask them what they love and how they show it, and what ways they like to be shown they are loved in return. You might be surprised with what they have to say! READ LOVE Take some time beforehand and find a few special books about Valentine’s Day and about love. Share them with your children and have a story hour at home reading about love. Or, take them to the library and let them pick out a few books of their own. Either way, keep the focus on reading and sharing the stories about love…the snuggles and the stories about love are worth their weight in gold.

6 | WeAreProsper.com

EAT LOVE Make a special Valentine’s Day treat to enjoy after school or for dinner. You can get creative by decorating heart shaped cookies or making a heart shaped pizza. Or you can keep it simple and make a sandwich and then using a heart shaped cookie cutter to remove the crusts. Again, the focus is on love and finding ways to show that to one another. SHOW LOVE The most important thing you can teach your children is what it means to love others – and the best way to do this is to model that behavior! Make it a point to give your child extra hugs and kisses. Tell your child about your favorite memory of them…the story about the day they were born or the moment you were most proud of them. Or find your favorite photo of them, write on the back of it why it’s your favorite and frame it for their room…it’s a wonderful reminder every day of your love for them. You can also show them how to care for others and the world around them… volunteering to help those in need, being kind and/or donating to causes that are important to your family. Through these actions, your child will learn the value of love and compassion. PLAY LOVE Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to let loose and just have fun with your children! Keep the focus on love-themed activities. Sing your favorite love songs together, play a game of Pin the Heart on Cupid, or enjoy some time together decorating Valentine’s Day cards to give to their classmates, friends and family. These moments will make for some great memories and the love you share will carry over all year long!

Living a Long and Full Life By Mayor Ray Smith

American author Oscar Wilde is credited with the adage, “with age comes wisdom,” and the older I get the more I believe it. I’m not trying to say I’m getting any wiser as I get older, but I do understand the world a lot better than when I was a young man. I understand, for example, that good, old-fashioned hard work will almost always lead to good things. Young folks sometimes seem to think that they can get by with doing the minimum. Truth be told, I remember thinking that way myself. In fact, one of my many favorite quotes from Mark Twain is this one: “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” Aging has its setbacks, of course, but we should never overlook the good fortune that comes with living a long and full life, surrounded by family and friends. February is the perfect time of year when we can do exactly that. This month will give us ample opportunities to express how much we care for our loved ones. Valentine’s Day occurs this month, the traditional day when we set aside time to express our love. And really there is no better way to show how much our loved ones mean to us than to outwardly express our affection. Flowers, chocolates, candies, cards, and dining out are all ways we can say how much we love each other. These are important, of course, but there is another important way for us to show our love. And that is by ensuring that everyone we love, young and not-so-young, is monitoring their health.

8 | WeAreProsper.com

I say that because this month is also Heart Health Month, and as a survivor of a heart attack and stroke, I speak from experience. Monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol levels, body weight, ensuring a healthy diet, and getting plenty of exercise will not only lengthen our lives but will also provide us many days of good health. That seems like a lot of hard work, but it’s actually pretty easy if we take it in small increments. Our tremendous Parks and Recreation Department has developed a number of programs that can help us stay active. The annual Mayor’s Fitness Challenge is one of my favorites. It encourages residents to walk, run or jog for 100 miles or ride a bicycle for 500 miles over four months. The Challenge gains new participants every year, and maybe one day we’ll get most of the Town’s residents to take part. For active adults, the 407 Rec Center on First Street is a great place to meet people, get in a little workout, and encourage each other to maintain healthy habits. I visit it often, and I see how effective it is in making a difference in the lives of our active adult community. And speaking of healthy habits, I want to thank those of you who attended the workshop on the Town’s Hike and Bike Trail Master Plan. Prosper is blessed with some incredibly beautiful natural areas and preserving these nature trails for our enjoyment and the enjoyment of future generations is very important. Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone and remember to show your loved ones how much they mean to you every day.

Life & Luxury Magazine™

BEST OF PROSPER

Congratulations to these incredible individuals, organizations and businesses who work so hard to make Prosper THE place to live and raise our families! We reached out to the community for nominations, and these folks were recognized for the following reasons – some were nominated by multiple people, so we just combined their nominations. Please take a moment to go VOTE for favorite and when you see them around town, take a moment to say THANK YOU for all that they do for Prosper. We’ll be announcing the winner in next month’s issue!

PERSON OF YEAR Seth Ringley: The man behind so many, that never asks for a thing. Have witnessed over six organizations here locally on top of representing our community thru his own nonprofit across multiple states. Jennifer Lutes: Jen serves in so many ways behind the scenes helping people at Cornerstone, church and school. She is a quiet servant leader in Prosper – never wanting “credit” or calling attention to herself. Just simply encouraging, working, listening and helping people who need her. She makes it a family affair, always involving her kids and showing them what it is to love and serve people, expecting nothing in return. Jen’s leadership at Cornerstone has given Prosper residents outlets to serve others, making Prosper a kinder place to live. Sarah Feuerbacher Wells: Sarah has selflessly given to Prosper in so many ways. She owns her own counseling business in Prosper and helps numerous families and individuals through that business on a daily basis. She has helped the community by organizing and leading the panel discussion on Suicide following last year’s events, as well as follow-up events about that topic. She helps the ISD by presenting numerous times for them and going to each school and providing workshops for faculty and staff. She has presented for the Prosper Police department, as well as other area organizations and churches. She is a member of the Prosper Baseball and Softball board as the Communications director and regularly sends out entertaining emails for the league. Finally, she even finds time to help coach her sons’ baseball teams and soccer teams...even pitching some for her youngest’s Coach pitch team. All of these things she does completely on a volunteer basis...free of charge...except of course for her actual business. She selflessly gives to the town of Prosper in so many ways and on a day-in, day-out basis. I can’t think of a more deserving person!

12 | WeAreProsper.com

Mark and Cathy Speed: After suffering the devastating loss of their son in late 2018, Mark and Cathy have spent a tremendous amount of time in 2019 focused on the children of Prosper both officially through the ISD (Hope Squad) and outside (Parents-R-Partners). In addition, they have worked personally one on one with a great many families and their children to help them walk through the difficult subjects of suicide and helplessness. Their prayer is through sharing transparently, God’s light will shine on a dark path many are walking… too often alone. Both Mark and Cathy exemplify a selfless nature in giving back to Prosper despite their immense grief. Truly deserving of being Prosper’s Couple of the Year. Josh Allen: In 2019, the Prosper Baseball and Softball Association launched an Adaptive Baseball/Softball program to allow Special Needs children to play baseball and softball in Prosper. Previous to the launch of the program, Special Needs children traveled to Arlington and Frisco to play baseball/softball in Miracle League. Josh Allen and his Prosper Texans baseball team financially contributed to the new League. In additional to their financial contributions, Josh and his team participated in the program as “Buddies” helping the Adaptive Players.

VOLUNTEER OF YEAR Jason Earp: An organization is only as good as the sum of all parts. As PYSA president, Jason gives his time freely to parents and athletes of all ages. PYSA provides opportunities for children to try new sports for the first time or to progress and grow in their chosen sport. Prosper is fortunate to have PYSA and its volunteers. If you know Jason, family and faith and community are very important to him. We have watched him be a positive role model. Sports are a large part of our community and having volunteers like Jason, show our children dedication, determination and hard work grow your character.

Rebekah Land: Rebekah has been deeply involved with Town of Prosper Parks & Recreation for over 6 years. She is currently on the board. She has represented the growing town and facilitated naming parks, ribbon cuttings and the excitement of Frontier Parks growth. Since 2013, Rebekah has been stage manager of the successful festive Prosper Christmas festival.

WAYNE BARTLEY

Chris Kern: Miracle League, Cornerstone NCT (Board member), Bethlehem Place, Veteran’s Memorial, Lion’s Club and Prosper’s Planning & Zoning Commission, Hope Fellowship Prosper. Chris (and Gina) are invested and involved in many capacities in Prosper and have helped countless people. The town wouldn’t be the same without the Kerns!

BUSINESS OF YEAR Mathnasium: Jenn Sanchez and her staff have passion for all of Prosper’s students. She is a ball of encouragement and promotes each student to achieve progression in Math. She advocates for students and assures parents every day. I think all Prosper kids go to her. Prosper Chiropractic & Wellness Center: Dr. John Perriton loves people and loves Prosper! His chiropractic office is caring, compassionate, and provides amazing services for the people of Prosper- children, teens, adults, the elderly. Dr. Perriton cares about his patients personally, spends time with them, and always does what is best for them. EVERY business should be like this!

WAYNE BARTLEY, REALTOR

®

Bodine Orthodontics: While Bodine Ortho makes Prosper smile with straight and shiny teeth, the business is so much more than that. They generously support so many organizations in Prosper without hesitation. You see them at every community event having fun and investing in the people who live here. Their involvement goes way beyond simply marketing themselves because they do so much behind the scenes as well. They truly care about Prosper and its residents and it shows!

NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR Cornerstone NCT: Helps people in need/crisis get back and stay on their feet. Plus does 2 huge community events - Back to School and Christmas that gives kids what they need to be successful in school and have a great Christmas. Prosper Education Foundation: PEF does so much for the students and teachers at PISD. From giving scholarship money to graduating Seniors to recognizing the efforts of teachers at every campus each month, they are constantly supporting the district. Prosper Ladies Association: The volunteers for PLA are very generous with their time and resources. They do the Angel Tree donations and also host and provide food for the Prosper Police and Fire Banquets. These ladies are always willing to help out when needed. Online voting is available at www.LifeAndLuxuryMagazine. com/Prosper until February 20th!! Please vote and share the Prosper Magazine Facebook page to allow your friends and family to vote as well!

Top Docs Dr. John Perriton Chiropractic care can be a game-changer for countless health challenges. Children, teenagers, and adults alike can experience relief from acute injuries and annoyances as well as serious chronic conditions, often circumventing the need to pursue more invasive and expensive options or medications. Here’s just a sampling of the many areas of health that can benefit from chiropractic care: neck pain, headaches, back pain, strengthening the immune system, improving athletic performance, pregnancy and injury prevention/treatment. Dr. John Perriton first realized he wanted to become a chiropractor while in a college class that required observing various health professionals. When a friend chose to shadow a chiropractor, Dr. Perriton tagged along, not knowing his life direction would be set that day. While watching the chiropractor at work, he saw how this doctor cultivated good relationships with his patients. In fact, entire families came to see the chiropractor, and he was able to help them with many different health issues. From then on, Dr. Perriton knew that becoming a chiropractor was the right choice for him. At Prosper Chiropractic, Dr. Perriton strives to treat patients on an individual basis with state-of-the-art techniques, utilizing spinal decompression, flexion/distraction, cold laser for tissue healing, and physical therapy to support long-term healing and wellness. He strongly believes in the importance of getting to know his patients personally to help them move past their pain or physical limitations to accomplish their life goals. He has successfully cultivated an office atmosphere in which patients feel at home in a supportive and family-like environment. His goal is to unleash the power of the nervous system to give healing control back to the body and provide a more conservative route of care. At the same time, he understands that sometimes medication and surgical intervention is necessary, and he always seeks to develop good relationships with other medical professionals to provide the right care for each of his patients. Dr. Perriton graduated from Brigham Young University with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and completed his doctorate at Parker University. Before coming to Prosper, he worked with a chiropractor in Highland Park specializing in care for athletes at SMU. Additionally, he ran a successful clinic in Allen, and while there, treated many of the basketball and tennis athletes of Collin County Community College. Dr. Perriton is a Certified Sports Chiropractor (CCSP) as well as a licensed acupuncturist. He has been married to his wife Liz for eight years, and they have two rambunctious little boys, Knox(6) and Jace(4) as well as 16 month old twins Tyce and Halle. When he’s not working, Dr. Perriton enjoys serving at his church and participating in a variety of sports.

Top Docs

Top Docs have Top Teams!

At Prosper Family Dentistry, there is no doubt that we have top docs. A quick perusal through our online reviews makes that obvious. Both Dr. Jill and Dr. Cara are experts in their field. Not only do they have outstanding credentials. They each have reputations for being compassionate, thorough, and highly skilled. What you may not know is that we have a top team, and we believe that it is the teamwork between the staff members and doctors that makes Prosper Family Dentistry the best it can possibly be. We achieve our goal of providing excellent, comprehensive family dentistry to every patient only because each person in the office works toward that same goal!

Dentists

Dr. Jill Sentlingar and Dr. Cara Kessler are both graduates of Baylor College of Dentistry (now named Texas A&M College of Dentistry), where they received an unparalleled dental education. After graduation, both have continued to expand their knowledge and skills through targeted advanced education in the areas of TMJ disorder, orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, and sleep disordered breathing. Their comprehensive approach to oral health and how it relates to the whole body makes them stand out among their peers. Patients are often surprised to hear a question that seems unrelated to the mouth, only to find out that Dr. Jill and Dr. Cara have picked up on a health issue through their thorough evaluation of the mouth, teeth, jaws, and gums.

Dental Hygienists

While they perform the task of a professional teeth cleaning gently and thoroughly, they also closely evaluate the lining of the mouth, teeth, gums, and the function of the jaws. Because our hygienists have many years of history with their patients, they are in the perfect position to note any red flags and bring it to the attention of the dentists.

Dental Assistants

Each of our dental assistants is highly skilled and trained in areas outside the realm of typical dental assisting. Over the years of working with Dr. Jill and Dr. Cara, our assistants have received high levels of education in the areas of risk assessment, advanced dental technology, oral surgery, and cosmetic dentistry. Ask any dentist, and she will confirm the truth of this: you can only perform excellent dentistry with an excellent dental assistant!

Business Office Staff

Our business office staff members have an advanced level of knowledge about comprehensive dentistry that makes phone conversations different. They know which questions to ask and understand the answers in a way that provides an immediate assurance and comfort that you will be well cared for in our office. Their great communication with you and the dental staff streamlines the time you spend in our office. They can discern from their time on the phone with you whether you need a quick emergency visit or an hour-long consultation with the dentist. It takes a top-level team with top-performing team members to produce the results our top dentists aim for each and every day!

Dr. Jill’s and Dr. Cara’s passionate pursuit of excellent dentistry and overall health spills over onto each team member. Our dental hygienists do not just clean teeth. They are each highly trained in assessing risk factors for not only dental diseases, but systemic health concerns as well. The genuine relationships they build with their patients helps them catch early warning signs of health changes, often before the patient or his medical doctor are aware of them. 201 N Preston Rd, Suite A | Prosper, Texas 75078

Homefront

Plan the Ultimate Kitchen Upgrade kitchen serves as the heart of most homes, so it’s also one of the first rooms homeowners choose when it’s time to make upgrades. When approaching your kitchen remodel, it’s important to keep your family’s lifestyle at the forefront of your planning to create a space that fits the way you like to live. Get the most livable space and enjoyment out of a kitchen remodel with these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry:

A

Make purposeful changes.

A desire to bring your kitchen’s style up to date is plenty of motivation for a renovation, but to get maximum benefit from your new space, spend time considering what functional improvements you can make, too. Do you need more cabinets for storage? Is there enough counter space for meal prep? Does the overall layout suit your family’s needs? Even if you chose the original layout and floorplan, chances are good that over time you’ve found a few things you’d change given the chance to do it again.

Consider physical space.

If yours is a family that cooks together, or if guests tend to congregate in the kitchen when you’re entertaining, a renovation is the perfect time to make adjustments that accommodate more bodies in the kitchen. You might want more work zones for multiple cooks, or an island or peninsula set away from the high-traffic zone for guests more interested in snacking and chatting than getting hands-on.

Evaluate your shopping style.

You may be in the habit of doing your grocery shopping to fit your

18 | WeAreProsper.com

available space. However, with a larger refrigerator and more pantry space, your shopping habits could change, allowing you to become a bulk shopper or at least increase the time between shopping trips.

Be realistic about mealtime.

If your family’s activities have everyone eating at different times, you may benefit from a feature like a warming drawer that keeps dinner warm until each family member makes it home for a meal. Think about features that would make the table space more practical, such as task lighting so kids can tackle homework at the table or convenient access to power for laptops.

Choose appliances with care.

It’s easy to get carried away with all of the design elements that go into a kitchen renovation, but at the end of the day, remember the appliances are the true centerpiece of the space. Be sure to leave room in the budget to select the best appliances for your needs so you have all the functions, features and space to make using your new kitchen as enjoyable as possible.

Think into the future.

A kitchen renovation can be a costly venture, so it’s a good idea to project years down the road as you consider your needs. Are there features that would enhance the safety if a baby (that soon will become an inquisitive toddler) joins the family? Are there elderly family members may benefit from a lower or higher workstation down the road? Find more expert tips to inform your renovation planning at RemodelingDoneRight.com.

Focusing In on a Great Landscape Design M

y mission this year is to teach others the art of landscaping and I’m on a quest to teach anybody who will listen the five basic principles of landscape design. In previous articles, I have discussed balance, repetition and scale. I purposely started with the easiest ones so I wouldn’t scare anyone away! I’m just kidding, as my goal is to help you learn and hopefully enjoy and improve your own personal space at your house! It is now time to move on to dominance, and in a future article, unity. If you have done your homework, you remember that I believe repetition to be the most important design concept of all. Since your natural tendency is to not repeat elements, you must consciously make yourself be repetitious. On the other hand, the most natural inclination most gardeners have is to put way too many dominant features or focal points in their landscapes.

at me!” Disneyland is usually not the look most are trying to create not to mention you would need half of their staff to maintain it! The ideal landscape is one that mostly permits restful repose for the eye with just occasional excitement, not one that blinds you or makes you a bit nervous gazing upon it. Landscaping is really a lot like writing or speaking. Exclamation points at the end of every single sentence would be way too much to bear. Be extremely careful when shopping online or at your local garden center, as the same features that make eye-catching elements into focal points also make them into habit-forming impulse buys. These items want to be seen.

Dominance is the authority of one element of a design composition to all the other parts. Due to the dominant element’s size, shape, texture, color or location, all other elements of the composition are subordinate to it. It’s important that this principle is used sparingly. As a rule, there should be only one dominant element in each view you look at.

Thoroughly think through your landscape before implementing a final design. Force yourself to come up with a master plan and a theme and then stick with it. Look at your house and garden from all angles, decide what (and where) the focal points will be. Remember; try to limit yourself to one dominant focal point per obvious view.

Notice that I don’t mention landscaping in any part of the definition. As I have said many times before, “Design is design”. The principles are exactly the same whether you are practicing interior design, floral design, and landscape design or even dressing yourself in the morning.

Potential views include looking at the front of your house from the street, looking at your backyard from the patio, looking down both sides of your house and looking out the larger windows into the landscape. Possible focal points to consider are an attractive front door, a beautiful or bold specimen plant, a birdbath, fountain or piece of garden art.

Think about it. You wouldn’t wear all your favorite jewelry at the same time, would you? Nor would you hang every photo and knick-knack on the same wall, right? What makes a focal point dominant is its ability to attract attention and “draw the eye”. This is a very powerful tool and should be used with restraint and caution. It’s very easy to overpower a landscape with dizzying array of bold colors, shapes and objects all shouting at the same time “Hey, look at me! Look 20 | WeAreProsper.com

As a general rule, try to stick with your theme. If your overall design concept features an older home and antique furnishings, perhaps a vintage piece of statuary or rustic garden shed would be a good focal point. On the other hand, if your general theme is more current and flashier, a shiny piece of modern art might be in order. And of course, striking or unusual landscape specimens, whether contorted, weeping or fastigiated, all make great eye-catchers!

Worth area.

Question: Jimmie, can you recommend to me a couple of good hearty lower-tier holly shrubs that do well here for my existing landscape? I’m tired of having to plant too many flowers for the lower area in all my beds and just need something permanent there. Thank you for your time, I really enjoy reading your columns! I feel I am learning something new each time I read them! – Jackie P. in Prosper Answer: Hi Jackie, there are many choices I could give you for permanent second tier plantings depending on what else you have existing in your landscape. If you are specifically wanting holly recommendations then probably your best two would be Dwarf Youpon Holly and Carissa Holly. If you prefer a little more natural look than structured such as those then go with a dwarf Nandina or Giant Liriope, or you may want to consider perennial color that comes back every year that you don’t have to replant. Question: Jimmie, is it too early to put out preemergent or fertilizer on my grass? Is there a specific date to go by or how the grass looks? I know you’re a busy guy and appreciate your time sir! – Johnny L. in Prosper Answer: Hi Johnny, each year can be slightly different however as a general rule of thumb go by these dates: March 1st, June 1st, and September 1st --- Apply Pre-Emergent March 15th, June 15th and September 15th --Apply Fertilizer Until next time…. Happy Gardening! -Jimmie

alentine’s Day naturally brings thoughts of hearts, flowers, sweetness and love. Because it also occurs during American Heart Month, it’s a perfect opportunity to start taking care of your own heart and the hearts of loved ones. Part of the charm of the day’s celebrations is in giving family and friends flavorful foods to enjoy from chocolates and candies to other sugary treats. However, the festivities don’t have to be completely focused on unhealthy bites in order to make someone feel special. This year, it can be easy to share in the fun of Valentine’s Day by serving those you love with sweet, seasonal treats. For example, these Frosted Watermelon Cutouts make for ideal snacks for children and adults alike whether it’s an after-school treat or a sweet dessert with just three ingredients, heart-shaped cookie cutters and minimal time spent in the kitchen. If you’re really looking to impress that special someone, this Watermelon and Chocolate Dessert Board calls for creativity and plenty of tasty morsels like berries, cashews, almonds and dark chocolate. Without any baking or cooking required, simply spread out the ingredients for a platter that’s just as visually appealing as it is appetizing. Both recipes include the benefits of watermelon, which boasts plenty of vitamin C to boost the immune system’s defenses as a cholesterolfree, fat-free and sodium-free food. Plus, watermelon draws its red color from the powerful antioxidant lycopene (12.7 mg per serving), which may help protect cells from damage, and the healthy treat is American Heart Association HeartCheck Certified with just 80 calories per serving, making it the perfect centerpiece for Valentine’s Day recipes. What to Wear for Valentine’s Day

There’s no doubt about it—Valentine’s Day is coming up! Even if you think it’s a made-up holiday or a for-real celebration of all things love, make some plans! Whether you decide to stay in and get cozy or hit the town, your Stylist has the perfect look. Read on for date night inspiration— whether you’re staying in or going out.

IF YOU’RE GOING OUT

It might take a bit more effort but planning a date night can be so rewarding. No matter what you decide to do, use it as an excuse to put on something pretty—maybe something a little more dressed up than your usual look. And, don’t forget, Valentine’s Day is coming up, so you might want to have a look that’s a bit more romantic on hand. Happiest Hour Meeting friends (or that special someone) at your favorite cocktail lounge? Dress up your denim with a flirty top in a bright cherry red, pink heels and a clutch in the prettiest shade of blush. We love that a top like this can be repurposed and worn with a pencil skirt or your favorite work pants. Curtain Call Attending the theater or a concert? Make sure everything is in perfect harmony when you pair a printed dress with a solid moto—black and white as shown here—or in any color palette that lights up your face. Finish the look with pointy-toed pumps for a dressed-up touch, and a clutch in a pop-y color (which will also look great paired with jeans for a brunch date). The Art of Style When gallery hopping or wandering through your favorite museum, opt for denim paired with feminine favorites. A graceful white top with delicate details is a great place to start—so romantic. Add a shoe embellished with a statement bow for even more girly flair, and just to keep things interesting—a clutch in a wild-but-not-too-wild animal print.

IF YOU’RE STAYING IN

There is no rule that says a date (even a romantic date!) has to include leaving the house. Whether you are just getting to know each other, or have been together awhile, doing something together at home can be really special. But, hold the holey sweats. Ask your Stylist for comfy but stylish pieces so you’ll always be ready to hang at home and look great doing so. Super Style Staying in to watch the big game? Score major points in the style department with a sporty look that’s comfy and just happens to be a style all-star. A pair of leggings with interesting detailing is athleisure done right, especially when paired with a tie-waist top in a cool neutral. Finish the look with sneakers in a fun print, and you’ll be set for game day. No Reservations Feasting on a 5-star meal does not have to mean leaving your house—choose a recipe, invite that special someone over to be your sous chef and cook up a romantic date. Prep the perfect look, starting with a comfy-but-stylish pair of pull-on pants, top with a t-shirt and make sure you have a cute cardi on hand in case it gets chilly. Elevate the whole thing with a pair of metallic sneakers, and you are serving up your finest at-home look. Set the Scene Ah, movie night, the classic at-home date. What could be more perfect than curling up on the couch with your favorite action, romance or comedy films along with your favorite person? Keep it fashionable when you pop on a pair of on-trend camo leggings topped with a colorful button-up shirt and denim jacket—and add a sporty-casual touch with a cool pair of kicks. Pop the corn, melt the butter and settle in for the ultimate night at home. Article compliments of Stitch Fix. Ready for date night? Tell your Stylist what your plans are. Visit www.stitchfix.com to schedule your fix!

Mardi Gras in New Orleans New Orleans has everything you need for a quick getaway in February. From restaurants to tours, bars and activities, there is plenty to do this month…but probably the most notable attraction this month in the Crescent City is MARDI GRAS DAY!! No one does Carnival like New Orleans. Beginning on January 6th (Twelfth Night), the city is obsessed with eating, costuming, bead-tossing and parading. A month or so of parties named for just one day…Mardi Gras, otherwise known as Fat Tuesday, the last day before Lent. This year, Mardi Gras Day falls on February 25th. The celebration dates all the way back to 1699 when Louisiana was founded by explorer Pierre Le Moyne D’Iberville and the city hasn’t stopped partying since. Mardi Gras Day marks the final day of Carnival Season. Always the day before Ash Wednesday, Fat Tuesday is a one of a kind experience that embodies the New Orleans culture. Zulu, one of the most-loved parading krewes, is the first parade of the day and they are known for their highly sought-after coconuts – or “golden nuggets”. Following Zulu is Rex, one of the oldest parading krewes. The leader “Rex” acts as the king of all of Carnival. This krewe started the tradition of purple, green and gold, the official colors of Mardi Gras and a “throw” from their float is one of the most coveted. Like most everything else in New Orleans, February weather can be unpredictable. Hot, cold, rainy, dry…layers will be your best friend. Best practice is to keep a light jacket that can be easily stowed away or tied around your waist in case the weather turns. Also a must is to wear comfortable shoes that you won’t mind getting a little dirty. You will find most people wearing festive yellow, green and purple

clothing, and many will take advantage of the opportunity to get into costume! Whatever you decide to wear, just make sure you grab a king cake and a pound or two of crawfish, because they go hand in hand with Mardi Gras! A few favorite places we found to stay in New Orleans…the Royal Sonesta is party-centric and Bourbon Street’s swankiest hotel. Request a balcony room to hear the live jazz music and watch the eclectic parades of people that go by at all hours! Or try a coveted Bourbon balcony room at the Sheraton – located on the site of the historic Old French Opera. Today’s young opera singers often perform in the lobby bar if you want a different kind of entertainment. Or, if you want to escape the revelry and actually get some sleep, try the Saint – a sleek hotel located on the board of the French Quarter and the Central Business District. It boasts a roof-top bar with expansive city views and the sexy Burgundy Bar with live music. Wherever you decide to stay, walking or biking will be your best bet for getting around. While anytime throughout the Mardi Gras season is fun to be in New Orleans…the biggest celebrations and the larger krewes (parades) begin to roll the Wednesday before Fat Tuesday. And in case you didn’t already know it, Mardi Gras is a FREE EVENT! No tickets are needed to view the parades. However, balls are invitation only or ticketed. Truly a citywide celebration, you’ll find everything from quirky, satirical floats to the North Side Skull and Bones Gang! There’s truly something for everyone!
