The effortless virtuosity, directness and humanity of Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy’s verse have made her our most admired and best-loved contemporary poet. “In the world of British poetry Carol Ann Duffy is a superstar” The Guardian Carol Ann Duffy lives in Manchester, where she is Professor and Creative Director of The Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University. She has written for children and adults, and has received many awards, including the Signal Prize for Children’s Verse, the Whitbread and Forward Prizes, and the E. M. Forster Prize in America. In 2005, she won the T.S. Eliot Prize for her collection Rapture.
Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy presents her illustrated children’s book The Princess’ Blankets with musician John Sampson. A magical blend of poetry, music and fairytale for children of 7 and over. The Princess’ Blankets is a powerful new fairy tale of a princess who cannot get warm. Told to a stunning backdrop of illustrations by Catherine Hyde, this is a unique event not to be missed. Litfest in partnership with Live at LICA, The Platform and Shout About Books
How might a performance last an entire year? How do we mark time and how does it mark us? Since October 2009, the Making Time garden has been a continual presence outside the Peter Scott Gallery. Created by artists Elizabeth Willow and Jonathan Raisin, it is their response to a Nuffield Theatre commission to develop a year-long performance. Behind this transformation of a neglected space is an exploration of presence and absence, the nature of performance, and the ways we experience and respond to time. Through the changing seasons, Making Time is a live essay in performance and a uniquely positive take on durational art. At noon on the 21 October the artists will leave the garden. During the weeks leading up to this there will be events to mark the ending of the year. Details will be available on the Nuffield website, and garden visitors are always welcome. The artists are creating a book for publication later in the year; and in Spring 2011 we will host a symposium to consider further the concepts and ideas behind the project. makingtime@liveatlica.org

EXHIBITIONS It’s thrilling as the Exhibitions and Events Officer at an interdisciplinary arts organisation to find the art forms naturally crossing over this Autumn. The captivating film-based works of Ellie Rees and Hetain Patel have clear links with the worlds of composition and performance, while Eduardo Paolozzi’s stunning prints draw on advertising, design, fashion and Hollywood.
Our collections also feature strongly. The unique Chambers Bequest of Pilkington’s ceramics and archive material will appear not only in our dedicated display room, but also in the Manchester Art Gallery exhibition Exporting Beauty: Pilkington’s Tiles and Pottery, which draws significantly on works from the Peter Scott Gallery. You are bound to find something inspirational in our exhibition spaces this Autumn, and we hope you will join us to experience each display and the exchanges taking place in the gallery.

Hetain Patel’s films look at communication, rhythm and movement. In the two films Kanku Raga and To Dance Like Your Dad, Patel takes particular influence from Tabla and inheritance versus imitation. The presentation of Patel’s films will coincide with a performance of his new work TEN, which takes place in the Nuffield Theatre on 4 November (see page 25). Selected works from the Peter Scott Gallery collection will be on show alongside Patel’s films.
A compulsive collector, a jumbler of icons and a pioneer of Pop, Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924– 2005) is equally revered for his mechanistic sculptures and his kaleidoscopic print projects.
Working with the iconic 1982 Sylvester Stallone film Rambo: First Blood, Takeshi Murata has created a sliding, undulating film that grows out of the Hollywood movie, shifting from figural to digital abstraction and back again. A pulsing pink dot takes centre stage as scenes crumble and melt into themselves and each other.

Ellie Rees, stills fromYou Didn’t Call, So I Read Jane Eyre, 2008 Single-channel digital video
Opening 12 October 6pm
Ellie Rees creates carefully constructed performances which employ humour and irony to investigate what it means to be a woman and an artist. Rees is especially interested in archetypes and narrative structures on the subject of gender and love found within opera and Hollywood film. It is the often exaggerated and over simplified depictions of ourselves in these art forms that Rees reflects on, in particular that of women in high and popular culture and the inconsistency between the liberated female role and the romantic views proposed by those cultures. Rees’ work both plays with and questions the nature of performance, particularly looking at
the difference between live and recorded spectacle. Her aim is not to document a live performance event with an audience, but to make a precise performance to camera. Rees has described her work as a quest for perfection that can never be achieved, saying that her quest as a performer could function as an analogy for the quest for perfection in romance.

General Dynamic F.U.N is a series of fifty screenprints and photolithographs created between 1965 and 1970, for which Paolozzi employs the technologies of mass-reproduction and gorges on its idols – the household names and familiar faces of consumer advertising, high fashion and Hollywood. For Paolozzi, the modern age, exposed as ephemera, is a necessarily fragmented collision of visual stimulus and influence. A Hayward Touring exhibition from Southbank Centre, London.

CONCERTS In my first season, I am thrilled to introduce a series of concerts that I know you will find uplifting and inspiring. Great classics stand alongside superb new works by living composers. International artists and household names take their place alongside career-launching performances by emerging young talent. There’s some virtuosic genre-bending by Czech trio Bardolino and a brand new in-house adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker for children.
The season opens magnificently with one of the world’s top orchestras performing a programme that has been chosen by you, the audience. This vibrant mix is what makes our Lancaster concerts so special, personal and unique I invite you to join me in celebrating them this season. To open the concert season we are honoured to present a concert by the internationally famed Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra. Formerly the orchestra of Soviet Radio, they hold a rich and fascinating heritage having premiered many of the greatest Russian works of the 20th Century.
One of the all-time greatest string quartets, the Endellions celebrated their 30th Anniversary with a cheeky and amusing piece by Roxanna Panufnik and poet Wendy Cope. Their new Maconchy quartet also features tonight with some classic Haydn and Beethoven.
Tantalisingly undefinable, Bardolino is a virtuosic fusion of classical, folk and gypsy music. This versatile Czech trio leaps across these genres on a breathless musical journey that will make you fall deeply in love with the spirit of central Europe.
Kazakh-born violinist, Alena Baeva, started her international career at 10 and has claimed an impressive array of 1st prizes such as the Moscow Paganini Competition. The symphony tonight was selected by members of our audience and promises to raise the roof off the Great Hall. An unmissable concert by one of Russia’s most prestigious orchestras.

Musical gems from the UK and USA. This programme showcases an outstanding work by Steve Mackey who has been enjoyed by audiences in previous seasons, Psappha’s own commission Five Fantastic Islands and the groovy and energetic Telephone Book.
Duncan Ward is the 2010 winner of the Lancashire Young Composer Competition. His piece has been specially commissioned for this concert and will be recorded as part of an online collaboration with aspiring young musicians in India and the North West.

Ockham’s Razor The Mill. 12 and 13 November.
THEATRE & DANCE This season's theme of 'crossing the divide' has informed our theatre and dance programme in many ways. Tradition meets the contemporary, technology meets the body, the international meets the local, and cultures intersect. The result is a heady mix of what theatre could and should be: curious, passionate and surprising.
My personal highlights include the awe-inspiring aerial antics of Ockham's Razor, Hetain Patel's beautiful piece TEN (complimented by his film-works in the gallery), the physical inventiveness of Inspector Sands' massive hit If That's All There Is, and the uncompromising personal politics of Pete Edwards' FAT. I hope you enjoy these and everything else on offer.

A jaw-dropping dance theatre spectacle that will have you laughing out loud and holding back the tears.
A new show from Forced Entertainment is a major event in the UK theatrical calendar, so we are delighted to be hosting this important UK Premiere.
For the first time, Ludus Dance and the Nuffield Theatre have together commissioned three new dance pieces. In this electrifying triple-bill, three of the UK’s most prominent choreographers – Nigel Charnock, Yael Flexer and Ben Wright – each take you on a compelling journey of cause and effect, in a pulse-racing mix of energetic dance, theatre and music.
The company’s 25-year body of work reflects an interest in the mechanics of theatre itself, the role of the audience, and the machinations of contemporary urban life. “One of Britain’s greatest theatre companies” (The Guardian), these pioneers of the British avant-garde have an unparalleled international reputation.
Nigel Charnock brings you a thunderously chaotic chunk of dance theatre that explores the effects of order and chaos on our lives, whilst poking fun at the self-destructing tendencies of our fame hungry society. Yael Flexer’s ‘show within a show’ sees the four dancers caught up in the ripple effect of their own decisions as they create a show before your very eyes. Meanwhile, Ben Wright’s choreography calls us to seize the moment… NOW!
In The Thrill Of It All, nine performers in grubby tuxedos play out a comical and disconcerting vaudeville to the strains of Japanese lounge music. Deranged dancing girls swirl, giggle and bicker. Shabby comperes compete for the microphone and the audience’s attention. Dances end in fights, jokes end in confusion, and sentimental stories end in arguments in this unsettling and extraordinary performance.
Suitable for 10 years plus and family audiences. www.ludusdance.org

Winner, Edinburgh International Festival Fringe Prize 2009 Guardian ‘Pick of the Fringe’
UK/Belgium-based theatre company Reckless Sleepers formed in 1988, taking its name from a painting by the Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte. Led by Artistic Director Mole Wetherell, they have become an important and distinctive voice in contemporary theatre, always combining intellectual inquiry with deadpan humour.
Commissioned by the Lyric Hammersmith, If That’s All There Is was a sell-out hit at the Edinburgh Festival before touring nationally to rave reviews. A young company really going places, Inspector Sands follow their interest in the 21st Century mindset using their trademark bold visual theatre style and absurd humour. If That’s All There Is takes shape as a mini-epic of longing, envy and psychobabble that examines our obsession with feeling happy at any cost. A couple are teetering on the brink of marriage. As the happiest day of their lives approaches, the panic begins to rise. And everyone’s watching… ★★★★★ Edinburgh Guide
★★★★ The Guardian
“An acutely observed, often surreal and sometimes painfully funny comedy about the dysfunctional links between modern neuroses and the all-too-human need for love” The Times www.inspectorsands.com
Commissioned by the Nuffield Theatre, Reckless Sleepers’ new show is about time, and travelling, and the rehearsals for the lunar landings. It’s about what happens when performers become moon-rock, re-enact a zero gravity moonwalk, or leave footprints that will never disappear. Dancing to the songs that astronauts sung as they went into orbit, it’s a 40th anniversary trip to the moon. ‘A wry, mischievous, lyrical and perceptive witness to the times we live in’. Starting life as a Nuffield Theatre/Rules + Regs commission, Levantes Dance Theatre’s show Room Temperature Romance went on to win the 2009 Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award and a run at London’s Barbican. Blending dance, video and movement with flamboyant costume and evocative audio, Levantes have a charismatic movement style that playfully explores the perverse aspects of the human psyche. Time Out ‘Critics Choice’, Room Temperature Romance is a charming story about the moments that mean nothing and everything in life’s daily routine. Ockham’s Razor stunned sell-out audiences at the Nuffield Theatre with previous show Arc in 2008. They return laden with awards and plaudits with their new show, The Mill, that has astounded audiences and critics around the country.. Ockham’s Razor create daring physical theatre on specially created aerial equipment. In The Mill, a large wheel made of wood and steel is suspended from a 7-metre high rig, linked into a system of ropes and wooden drums to create an intricate set. Powered by the performers using all their strength and weight, they create a precarious world where small decisions or actions gather momentum and impetus beyond their control. By turns treadmill and pleasure wheel, The Mill is the vehicle for a roller-coaster ride through every human emotion, and its effects are as unpredictable as they are dramatic. ‘a terrifically imaginative and original show, something really special.’ The Guardian ‘aerial artistry... with ingenuity and theatrical flair’ The Times www.ockhamsrazor.co.uk
