EDITOR’S NOTE

Dear readers, It is a pleasure to bring you our July issue of Live Doral Magazine! Summer is now in full swing, the kids are busy enjoying their vacation with their friends and family and/or spending their days at summer camps. There is no doubt that the famous South Florida heat is definitely here! This month we had the pleasure of interviewing culinary sensation Chris Valdes and we couldn’t help but love his charismatic personality and get inspired by his achievements at such a young age. As we suffer seeing our Latin countries clash with economic and political crisis, and no near hope on how it can get better, the author Jonathan D’Oleo, wrote an analogy of a possible scenario on how Latam can learn from the European Union and be able to become the prototype of regional economic integration, this sure will captivate you and leave you a dreaming of a hopeful future for our beloved countries of Latin America. In this issue we also bring you some other cool stuff you can do before the end of the summer, which is to visit the new Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, one of the few museums in the world to have combined an aquarium, a planetary and a science museum all under one roof. If you did not get to experience Miami Fashion Week last month, we brought a #throwback with the favorite designers that hit the runway this year with their cruise collections, plus get to see the kiss that Antonio Banderas (co-founder of MFW) stamped on our dear friend and designer Shantall Lacayo Enjoy the summer! I hope you have all had a great 4th of July celebration and weekend, and most importantly continue to spend time with family and friends this summer season!

12 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E .

HEALTH

WINNING

at weight loss

Losing weight isn’t easy. Two-for-one value meals tempt us on menus, biggie drinks look so refreshing and super-size portions seem really appetizing. And there is no shortage of books, magazines and websites touting the latest and greatest cure for being overweight. It can all seem overwhelming. But there is hope. You can take small, achievable steps to lose weight, and also reduce your risk of developing weight-related health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and some cancers.

Eating too much and being physically inactive results in weight gain. To determine if you are overweight, estimate your body mass index (BMI), which is a calculation of your body weight relative to height. Multiply your weight in pounds by 703 and then divide the result by your height in inches two times. A BMI of 18.5 to 25 is considered healthy; 25 to 30 is overweight; 30 or higher is obese. To maintain your weight, you must burn enough energy to equal the calories you eat. To lose weight, you must use more calories than you eat.

Incorporate exercise into your weight loss program. You don’t have to sweat to get a good workout. Short exercise sessions throughout the day can be just as effective at burning calories as an extended session. Thirty minutes of moderate to intensive physical activity is recommended daily to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight after weight loss.

A weight-control strategy can begin with setting a realistic goal. Losing even a few pounds can improve your health, so start with a safe weight loss rate of one-half to two pounds per week. A successful weight loss plan will include lifestyle changes, not just going on a diet. Cut back on calories eaten and choose foods from a healthy assortment of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Limit alcohol consumption that can be high in calories, but low in nutrients. Read food labels and pay attention to serving size. Don’t be fooled by small packages that look like one serving size, but may actually be two or more.

If you are at least 100 pounds overweight and experiencing difficulties or other medical problems due to your weight, you may be a candidate for gastric bypass surgery. This surgery reduces the amount of calories taken in by your body by either making your stomach smaller or bypassing part of the stomach and small intestines so that fewer calories are absorbed. Patients who undergo this surgery must make a strong, lifetime commitment to a healthy diet and exercise regime to ensure a successful weight loss and avoid complications. Fad diets may help you lose weight at first, but they rarely have a lasting effect. Keep in mind four common behaviors that can help ensure the success of your weight loss program: eat a low-calorie, low-fat diet; weigh yourself frequently; be physically active; and don’t skip breakfast. Remember that losing weight, and keeping it off, requires major, longlasting lifestyle changes.

Gen Z Digital in their DNA HOW PARENTS CAN SUPPORT THEIR 21ST CENTURY LEARNERS Today’s students are digital natives and members of the so-called Generation “Z.” They have grown up with the internet and technology, and social media tools such as Instagram and Snapchat are a part of their daily lives. Sandra Iza of the Doral Huntington Learning Center says that this generation of learners is quite different than the one that came before them. “Parents are aware that their children learn differently than they did in school, but they don’t always know exactly why,” she says. What should you know about your child as a student? Iza offers valuable insight into what 21st century learners are all about and how you can support your child at home: Technology is integrated into their lives. Children today spend a great deal of time online, whether that’s at school or through smartphone devices. They are skilled multi-taskers who need to be engaged with a variety of teaching techniques in the classroom. You can expect that your child will become an efficient and adept researcher as he or she grows older too. Problem solving is active. Children today have grown up in a dynamic, globalized world, and thus, are used to thinking on their toes. When it comes to school, this translates into creativity and deeper thinking. You can foster your child’s learning by encouraging him or her to brainstorm solutions and think through potential ways to improve those solutions. They are being taught essential 21st century skills. In today’s informationbased economy, education researchers have identified the skills that the future generation needs to achieve success in their careers. Those skills include problem-solving in the face of uncertainty, critical thinking and leadership. Your child is certainly media and technology savvy, but he or she is also entering a rapidly changing workforce that requires flexibility and creativity. Nurture those assets whenever possible. 18 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

They move quickly. The classroom today is largely a studentcentered learning environment. Students prefer active learning and projects that engage them in material. They are often selfstarters and very capable of managing ambiguity, yet they seek to understand the relevance of what they learn as well. As you guide your child, keep these tendencies in mind. They are used to working in teams. Thanks to the social networks in which today’s children frequently interact, students are highly collaborative and used to learning alongside their peers. Encourage your child to share what he or she learns with you and others. Doing so helps your child remember and retain, and reinforces the approach of his or her teacher. Your job as a parent is to support your child’s educational journey and guide him or her toward independence and success—a job that is much easier to do when you have a good understanding of what your child is learning at school and how he or she learns best. “If you need help, call Huntington,” Iza says. “We understand the unique traits of students today and have adapted our learning programs to fit their needs and help them flourish.” Whether your child is struggling in school or wants to build skills or get ahead, Huntington can help. Chris has quickly gained a reputation as one of Miami’s youngest top chefs and one whose personality is evident through his creative food presentations. With his charismatic persona and talent he hopes to steal the hearts of many food lovers around the world. Chef Chris’ passion for cooking began at an early age with his family’s restaurant. As a child, he had an insatiable curiosity to learn the ins and outs of the kitchen and questioned the use of ingredients while cooking alongside his mother. Not only did he draw inspiration from his family, he recalls with nostalgia the days he would turn on the TV and see Emeril Lagasse cooking up storms in the kitchen. Emeril’s likable character and simply delicious meals motivated Chef Chris to strive to join the ranks. Chef Chris continued to pursue his dream throughout high school, gaining the recognition of his classmates and teachers. At one point he entered a cooking contest and lost which almost caused him to completely change careers and pursue a career as an attorney. However, as luck would have it, he was unknowingly entered by a supportive teacher in a cooking competition that awarded him a $10,000 scholarship to attend Le Cordon Bleu. Later this month Chef Chris will be putting his cooking skills on display at the prestigious third annual Flavors of Miami Culinary Gala to support and benefit the mission of the American Liver Foundation. WHAT KIND OF PLATES/FOOD WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR A ROMANTIC SUMMER DATE? For a romantic summer date, I would look up the sunset and plan on arriving to the beach an hour before, so around 6pm. I would get a basket and fill it up with a fresh white wine sangria or fresh pre-made cocktail, a nice salad served individually in containers, a light sandwich cut in half and wrapped and some fresh chocolate covered strawberries. In the basket I would throw in a small vase with flowers, a small candle, and I would wrap the basket in a blanket. When I arrived at the beach I would lay the blanket on the sand, open up the basket, and enjoy the light meal while watching the sunset, hearing the ocean waves, with the one I love, on a nice summer day. It’s the perfect romance recipe. WHAT KIND OF PLATES/FOOD WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR A GATHERING WITH FRIENDS & FAMILY? A great BBQ with a few cocktails and beers is always great for gatherings with friends and family. It allows you to chat while the food is cooking, and it even gives you something to nibble on while enjoying the conversation. And since its served fresh off of the grill, most of the time it’s going to taste great. Doesn’t break the bank, and its easier than cooking an entire meal. WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? I am very excited about all of the amazing things I’m working on. I’m gearing up for the Flavors event benefiting the American Liver Foundation at the Loews hotel at the end of July. I am also getting ready to tape season 3 of my online YouTube series “Cooking with Chris”, and I’m also working on a cookbook, which has me filled with excitement and constant hunger.

HOW DO YOU GET INSPIRED FOR NEW RECIPES? I get inspired for new recipes by traveling and tasting new restaurants and dishes. The possibilities in the food world are endless. There is always something new to taste, something new to learn or see. Anywhere I travel there is always a new trend, or an ingredient that’s in and popular at the time. Anytime I eat something new it gives me an idea instantly of how to combine it with my flavors, or something else I have made and suddenly a new dish and recipe is born. HOW DID YOU FIRST FIND OUT YOUR LOVE/PASSION FOR COOKING? As a child, I had an insatiable curiosity to learn the ins and outs of the kitchen and questioned the use of ingredients and how they were used on a constant basis. I partook in daily meals and cooked with my mother often, a habit that I believe strengthens the family and brings people together. My mother cultivated this knowledge and passion - leading me to cook my very first meal for my family at the ripe age of 10. WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST PLACE TO TRAVEL THIS SUMMER? I think its time we go back to spending quality time at the family table again. With day to day activities, online markets making everything easier, always being in a hurry, we’ve sort of lost the traditions, the spending quality time as a family at the dinner table. Family is everything; lets continue making memories with them at the dinner table. Bring back the traditions.

watching mom cooking everyday. I would always ask what she was cooking, what she was adding in the pot, and sometimes I would even ask how I could make it different. Curiosity to recreate the same thing took me to make my first dish all by myself at the age of 10. For those that want to learn how to cook I would recommend watching someone they admire (mom, abuelo, a friend) to see how they get around making a dish, write down some notes, and eventually try to recreate it. I promise cooking is fun, and with a little effort, creativity, and desire, you can be cooking up a great meal in no time. All you have to do is really want to learn. HOW DO YOU KEEP AN OUTDOOR BBQ HEALTHY? First rule, don’t throw BBQ sauce on everything! In fact don’t use it at all. It has tons of ingredients and overshadows the flavor of everything you use it on. Instead throw some shrimp and small cuts of beef on the grill with freshly made seasonings and herbs such as sour oranges, rosemary, and whole garlic, Yumm. Spice it up by grilling whole peppers, sweet potatoes, and pineapple. Lastly, chop up some of your favorite fruit such as mango, papaya, pineapple, add some cilantro, red onion, lemon, and salt and it will give you a flavor booster that will be different, healthy, and fun.

WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE THOSE WANTING TO LEARN HOW TO COOK? I went to culinary school and did an entire course of hardcore cooking. But, to be honest, what helped me the most was

THE UNITED STATES OF LATAM Latin America has a common origin and history. The level of cultural homogeneity between the countries than conform it is significantly higher than that of the nation-states that comprise the European Union. Yet the level of economic and political integration in LATAM is not anywhere near what Europe has accomplished amid the great degree of idiosyncratic, economic and political heterogeneity that characterizes that region. Given this reality,

how can LATAM states learn from the EU to foster regional integration and cooperation? Before answering that very important question, let us point out a couple of historical and philosophical facts about the European Union. To comprehend the nature thereof one must consider what gave rise to the concerted efforts for European continental integration. World War II was the straw that broke the camel’s back in a region besieged by belligerence both within and among its nations. Breaking with strict ideological and nationalistic standards, European leaders designed and carried out a functional approach to integration. One that interlaced economic interests through the creation of a common market. The initial efforts to bring this about were channeled through the European Coal and Steel Community. Following the parameters of this functional approach, the ECSC made its member-states more effective and interdependent. Interdependency, in turn, led to the concomitant expansion of the continent’s production, consumption, investment and trading possibilities. As member-states capitalized on such possibilities, a group of statesmen that came to be known as the founding fathers of the European Union, widened and deepened the institutional infrastructure for European integration. These men were Jean Monnet from France, Robert Schuman from Luxembourg, Konrad Adenauer from Germany and Alcide De Gasperi from Italy. Understanding, as Jean Monnet himself stated, “that nothing is possible without men, but nothing lasts without institutions”, they worked painstakingly to sow and nurture the seeds of what has become and is becoming the European Union. Events in recent history have dealt several blows to European integration. Among them, the debt crisis in Greece and Italy, Britain’s exit from the EU and the unfolding of deadly terrorist attacks across the continent. Despite these setbacks, the EU stands as an exemplary, albeit imperfect, model for establishing unity in diversity to foster social and economic stability and prosperity. Now, if there is one main thing Latin America ought to ascertain from the European experience is the need to build a comprehensive institutional framework upon which its nations can integrate with clear rules and expectations. Moreover, LATAM needs to bear in mind that a successful campaign for regional economic interconnection requires strong and sensible leadership of the kind capable of persuading both the elites and the common citizenry. We need a group of people cut from the same cloth as the European founding fathers to spearhead this urgent effort for the peoples of LATAM to coalesce and harness our region’s riches beyond raw materials and into value-added goods produced at an efficient scale. For this transformation to take place we need a shock therapy 24 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

J U LY 2 0 1 7

of sorts. Europe did not awake to the need to integrate until its countries were about to disintegrate amid Adolf Hitler’s ambition to dominate and subjugate. By saying this I am not at all hoping that a crisis of that magnitude unfolds in our time and in our region in order integrate in the aftermath. Nevertheless, we must impress upon the minds and hearts of our peoples the nature and causes of our current predicament of underdevelopment. One that has materialized as a result of the politics of “divide and conquer” exercised by those that our treasure plunder. We must leave those politics behind and unite in order to realize the power of our might as we proceed as one. Only with the willingness of the people to put aside senseless ideology and sacrifice for the sake of unity, will LATAM’s economic integration be possible. Only with solid institutions, as Jean Monnet would predict, will it improve and last. We should, therefore, put our best effort to integrate our countries now in a time of relative peace. For, as US General Norman Schwarzkopf once stated, “the more we sweat in peace, the less we bleed in war.” May the Almighty give us the wisdom and drive to work now and laugh later. If we do not, I am afraid that there will be a lot of crying and gnashing when our fragmented economies come crashing. Given our great level of cultural homogeneity we could orchestrate a United States of LATAM. Throughout its history, the EU has been trying to do just that; to conform a United States of Europe. Because of the heterogeneity between its nations that has not been possible. They have settled instead for a Europe of United States with an egregious democratic deficit, but functional nonetheless. Because of our intrinsic kinship, in LATAM we could become the archetype of regional economic integration in the twenty first century. Realizing our potential is a matter of mustering the will to do so. So, let us do so. Jonathan D’Oleo is an author, speaker and management consultant. A graduate from University College London and Brandeis University, his articles have been published in many national and international media outlets such as Fox News (USA), La Nación (Argentina), and Listín Diario (Dominican Republic). Rene Ruiz

Rene Ruiz strikes a balance between old world craftsmanship and modern glamour by blending Miami’s sultry sexiness with graceful elegance. Taking night gowns to a different level, making them look so soft and romantic, using metallic yet flowy fabrics, low v necks, belted waists and convenient pockets. Metallic fabrics are seen a lot in this collection, either with textures, or even in soft fabrics such as silk. Electric prints in sheer fabrics are also seen in his runway. We think sheer looks will be a big trend as we have spotted them in major runways, what do you think?

#THROWBACK Starts here!

Agatha Ruiz de la Prada On the final night of the shows, Designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada brought a magical runway full of hearts, bold colors, rainbows, fruit prints and gigantic polka dots. Bringing such a happiness feeling throughout her collection, this pieces should be the essential must haves to have fun spring summer days. The woman who describes her world as, “A place where there is no room for black,” always manifests just that on the runway.

Shantal Lacayo Nicaraguan designer Shantall Lacayo presented a vivid collection full of prints, inspired by one of the works of Nicaraguan poet Pablo Antonio Cuadra, a central figure of the Latin American avant garde. In her designs we saw a lot of romantic elements yet in a modern and bold style, like ruffle skirts, the mix of lace with stiff fabrics, her signature hand-cut leather pieces and bold colors in fun patterns. Her youthful and fun vibes attracted the attention from fashionistas and celebrities like Valentina Ferrari among others.

Custo Barcelona Custo prenseted his “Light Years Cruise” collection, filling MFW with color and shine. He used fabrics like translucent lamé, metallic finishes, laminated fabrics, goffer texture with metallic lining, Lurex nets, and the bright colors of precious stones that were all combined to create modern and feminine silhouettes. Custo has definitely proven, once again with this collection why he has become a true icon in the fashion industry among the big designers, always experimenting with the mixture of fabrics and textures and creating a unique and never before seen fashion concept, that teaches us that to stand out in fashion, it isn’t necessary to play by the classic rulebook, but to carry each piece with personality and originality.

Silvia Tcherassi The Colombian designer Silvia Tcherassi presented a collection emphasizing off the shoulder tops, pastel colors and flowy pieces. Her signature mark were the oversized pants, skits and dresses with accentuated waists, carrying in soft color fabrics making this collection portray elegance, comfort and ideal for the classic woman. Her Latin roots were also felt throughout the runway with the use of accessories, oversized and bold earrings, handbags and hairpieces.

Angel Sanchez Angel Sanchez played an array of sculptural pieces in the runway. He implemented heart shaped tops with feathers, metallic fabrics and pleats with straight-line skirts. Subtle designs with an edgy touch, minimalistic and modern, but feminist and romantic are some of the words we think when we see this collection. He also used sheer fabrics and added ruffles making it playful and sexy. The patriotism for Venezuela was seen, as every model carried a bracelet with the country’s flag. The show ended with ex-Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez walking down the runway.

SMOOTH SHAPE TECNOLOGÍA AVANZADA PARA COMBATIR LA CELULITIES

L

30 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E .

32 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E .

GOT MOLD? MIAMI MOLD SPECIALIST OFFERS COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTIONS FOR MOLD INSPECTION AND MOLD REMOVAL In modern day life, the home environment is considered to be a safe and comfortable area for all of its inhabitants. It is a sanctuary in which individuals and families are able to forget about the outside world and breathe easily. However, there are times when the humble abode in which you reside can actually be harming you and negatively impacting your health. Mold is a natural organism that can be found everywhere; both indoors and outdoors. Although being in contact with mold spores for short periods of time can be harmless for some people, extensive mold exposure can have a variety of detrimental effects on your health. With the help of research and on the field data collection, methods and protocols have been established in order to combat mold growth in homes and assure that normal fungal ecologies are preserved. “We want to spread awareness and let people know what’s really going on,” said Marty Katz, founder of Miami Mold Specialist, a local mold inspection and remediation company. “We have a lot of clients who are very unfamiliar with mold and the process of treating it. They know they have a smell. They know they’re having symptoms. When they call us, we bring them a one-stop shop in which we provide them with the best, most affordable and quickest results possible to eliminate their mold issue.”

In the last 6 months, Marty Katz and his team of state certified technicians have serviced more than 800 residential, commercial and marine properties while utilizing his meticulous 10-step mold inspection process which combines state-of-the-art equipment, eco-friendly materials and time-tested methodologies to provide the fastest, most efficient and affordable mold solutions available in South Florida. But how does Marty Katz offer such affordable prices while providing his clients with a one-year warranty in an industry with such high demand? It’s quite simple; no expenses are spared when it comes to manpower or technology. Because of his strong inclination towards using the latest equipment available and hiring only the most experienced technicians, he is giving his clients the confidence to trust that every job performed will always follow his 10-step protocol. Just a few of the advanced devices used in these inspections include LED Fiber Optic Cameras that go through vents to find out-of-reach mold growth, Infrared Thermography Cameras that locate moisture and condensation buildup behind walls and ceilings, Laser Thermometers that detect cold spots around windows and appliances, and on-site Air Particle Counters that provide readouts of air contamination. “Within a day or two of our assessment, we present clients with a full, detailed report explaining our findings and what treatments are recommended,” said Abby Klein, Miami Mold Specialist’s administrative manager. “We then give clients the option to perform the remediation on-site, at the time of the assessment. Our clients often want the problem to be solved immediately so we send out a full crew during our assessment phase to facilitate that service.” With 196 reviews and a 5-star Google Business rating, it is evident that Miami Mold Specialist’s clients are satisfied with the services they’ve received. “People have an incorrect perception that by hiring a remediation company with a full crew that are all licensed and use state-of-theart technology that the process will cost them tens of thousands of dollars,” said Katz. “We keep our costs low, so that people who previously believed they were priced out of treatment have the opportunity to affordably alleviate their mold problems.” “We’re hard working people who are really trying to make a difference and help the community. That’s how we operate—on referrals, on public knowledge,—and we pride ourselves on being a real company offering an affordable service with strong ethics.”

Marty Katz, an expert in mold assessment, removal, and remediation, has been on the front lines of the industry for close to three decades. Katz owned and operated Five Boro Mold Specialist in New York City for 25 years while also operating several franchises. During this time, Katz successfully mastered the art of mold removal and environmental consulting by dedicating countless hours of research and data analysis to better understand mold life and find the most efficient ways to counter its growth. Katz’s unique purview has granted him exclusive distinction from his peers. His award-winning mold remediation reporting framework and software system has been used in numerous court cases. The fact that such tools are made available to all clients facilitates the process for many people who aren’t familiar with mold and the process of removing it. Katz has lobbied for reform that directly affects the addressing of extreme weather related mold conditions and has also donated his time and resources to assist in the aftermath of numerous natural disasters including Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy in New York City. 34 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . IMPUESTOS A LA PROPIEDAD Conoce tus derechos

E

36 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . RECIPE

SUMMER TIME CORN SALSA WITH PAN SEARED SALMON Olive Oil for drizzle FOR THE CORN SALSA: Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Should the corn salsa need more acidity, add more lime juice. Should the salsa need more sweetness, add more honey. They key is to have a balance between the acidity and sweetness. Using the corn raw will give you a delicious light sweetness and added crunch. FOR THE SALMON Season Salmon to taste.

One of my favorite recipes to share with my followers. Not only is it perfect for summer time, but it is also quick and easy to make. The salsa has the perfect balance of acidity, sweetness, and crunch. Served with the Salmon, it is the perfect combination!

Heat a medium non stick pan, drizzle with olive oil, and place the salmon skin side down. Cook for 3 minutes or until skin is crisp and golden brown. This will give a nice crisp to the salmon. Flip the salmon filet and cook on the other side until fully cooked, about 4 minutes. Serve with the Summer Corn Salsa and a Lemon Wedge.

CORN SALSA: 3 fresh Corn on the Cobb, corn Kernels removed from husk 1 small red onion, diced 1 jalapeĂąo pepper, seeded and diced 1 small red pepper, seeded and diced 1/4 fresh chopped cilantro 2 limes, juiced 2 tbsp of fresh honey Salt and Pepper to taste Pan Seared Salmon: 2 Fresh Salmon filets Salt, Pepper, and Dill to taste
