Hospital waste management during the COVID-19 pandemic
Alexios Mavroudis
Summary
Introduction: Hospital waste management is defined as the method of collecting waste from the production site and transporting it for disposal or recycling and reuse.
Purpose: Study of the financial impact on the logistics of hospitals during the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of waste management.
Material: The criteria for collecting information include the hospital, the number and date of the contract or practice with the company, the contract duration, the contracting company, the type of waste, the management method, the unit of measurement, the quantity, the unit price including VAT (Value Added Tax), the total budget and a brief description of the terms of the contract.
Method: Recording of information from the collection of contracts and evaluation of the relationship between the date of execution of the project and the amount of waste the company undertakes to treat, as well as the correlation of the work performed according to the global budget of nursing units and the cost of payment. Waste management treatment is classified chronologically before and during the Covid-19 era.
Results: The period of the Covid-19 pandemic increased the amount of waste in the two years 2020-2022. Hospitals’ finance departments change the annual budget and cost for hiring licensed companies to perform the waste treatment work.
Conclusions: The development of new health care facilities is causing an increase in waste. Hospital administrations increase the budget and the cost of hiring companies to ensure high quality service delivery.

Nutritional management of Rett syndrome in children
Rougeri Irini, Koutsikou Niki
Abstract
Rett syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder resulting from a mutation in the X chromosome and, therefore, primarily affects the female sex, with an incidence of 1 in 10,000–15,000 female births. The symptoms of the disease do not appear until after the first 6-18 months of life and include manifestations in various systems that require multidisciplinary treatment. Nutritional intervention is of utmost importance in the management of manifestations and symptoms, such as dysphagia, gastrointestinal manifestations and low weight. The nutritional plan must be individualized, sufficient in energy and nutrients, with an emphasis on components that are in short supply. Also, a diet of appropriate texture should be chosen, depending on the level of dysphagia of each child, as well as, in case that the energy needs are not met, alternative feeding routes must be considered. In recent years, more and more studies support that the ketogenic diet can help with the management of epilepsy, which affects 60-80% of patients with Rett syndrome. Furthermore, a number of studies support the possible benefits of supplements with antioxidants, such as omega-3 fatty acids. However, more studies are needed to safely administer nutritional supplements and/or special diets to children with Rett syndrome. This article aims to provide a comprehensive guide in Greek language to the dietary management of the syndrome. The data was retrieved from the online libraries pubmed and ncbi, the journal Nature and the science direct database.

The position of day care units in Greek reality
Alexios Mavroudis
Summary
Introduction: Day care units are special health units that aim to limit hospital costs and provide health services to the patient as quickly as possible.
Objective: Understanding the principles and core values of their operation, according to the standards of a defined health policy reform intervention .
Methods: Review of bibliography and scientific articles with internet search tools (pub med), without any restrictions. At the same time, personal experience is also recorded in the context of shaping a modern health network with innovation in the medical, administrative and technological approach to the patient.
Results: Day care units are a dynamic prospect in the health sector, since preventive and therapeutic examinations are implemented in a limited period of time. Medical practices are carried out with absolute success in patients with a healthy history, avoiding hospital stays and at the same time achieving the need to protect the psyche of patients and prevent nosocomial infections in combination with low financial cost, without however precisely determining the provision of quality health care. The question is whether there is a benefit for the health system, because their operation is based on speed and cost. However, a necessary condition for their sustainability is universal health coverage for all citizens in accordance with the principles of equality and income criteria.
Conclusions: Evaluating immediate outcomes is not feasible, while a systematic effort to identify and record expected benefits and corresponding costs can significantly assist in identifying potential outcomes and achieving goals for a healthcare organization.
Keywords: Day Care Units, childhood, cost, benefit, medical environment.
