Carl Clocks Up 250 Concerts Liverpool’s favourite New Yorker, Carl Davis will celebrate conducting the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in Liverpool for a staggering 250 times when he takes to the podium for the Last Night of the Summer Pops on Saturday, 10th July. Carl made his first appearance at Philharmonic Hall in 1965, when the Orchestra teamed up with the Liverpool band The Swinging Blue Jeans (of Hippy Hippy Shake fame) as part of a concert of music of modern American composers. Alongside works by Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Barber and George Gershwin was a brand new piece especially commissioned for the Orchestra from Carl himself, which featured symphony orchestra and pop group. Carl has been a regular
visitor to Philharmonic Hall ever since, presenting concerts in his inimitable style and often sporting a dazzling array of waistcoats and jackets! He founded the Summer Pops concerts and pioneered screening classic silent films with live music, usually composed by himself. As well as conducting the Last Night, Carl also conducts the Summer Pops Battle of Britain concert, a stirring programme of wartime favourites, narrated by his wife, the actress Jean Boht, and with guest vocalist and ‘Forces Sweetheart’ Claire Sweeney. Things To Come Digital Education Project wins Best E-Learning Project at the Big Chip Awards Fresh from fighting off stiff international competition from projects developed by Channel 4, Amazon and Disney to pick up the two prestigious British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) Awards earlier this year, the Phil’s prototype digital education project, Things to Come, developed in partnership with Manchester-based interactive studio, Stardotstar, has added the Best E-Learning Project award in the Big Chip Awards 2010. Funded by the Technology Strategy Board, Things to Come is an interactive computer programme for use on ‘whiteboards’ in schools. The programme, which provides an introduction to the orchestra, is an aid in preparing children for attending the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual schools’ concerts, which in 2010 were attended by 30,000 primary school children from Liverpool and the North West. The Phil is seeking to develop the prototype into a fully interactive exploration of the Orchestra that will be available to all primary schools nationally. 8
