Bryn Terfel’s tenure as one of Liverpool Philharmonic’s four Artists in Residence was a memorable two weeks during which capacity audiences at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall enjoyed the virtuosity and artistic generosity of the multi-award winning opera star whose concerts opened the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2014/13 concert season.

A Night at the Musicals, Brahms’ A German Requiem, a lunchtime concert of music by Bach and two stupendous performances of Puccini’s Tosca, during which Terfel reprised one of his signature roles as the dangerously charismatic Scarpia, all celebrated one of music’s great voices.

‘You cannot have Bryn in town for almost two weeks and not have him deliver one of his most indelible creations.’ Review of Tosca

‘To net Bryn Terfel for a two-week stint was a real coup for the RLPO... his appearances in Bach, Brahms and songs from the shows, plus his animating presence behind the scenes, have lived up to sky-high expectations. Petrenko and the orchestra matched Terfel’s five-star quality... nothing short of masterful.’ ★★★★ review of Tosca September 2013

‘... a thing of beauty… should count a major success.’

★★★★ review of Brahms’ A German Requiem

‘A wonderfully, warm, feel-good night of quality music’ Review of A Night at the Musicals

‘...a compelling, uncluttered semistaging with outstanding costars… The choir sound terrific … Petrenko's conducting dazzles and excites.’

REFURBISHMENT OF LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC HALL

News

On 21 September, a full to capacity Liverpool Philharmonic Hall heard about Love Music The Campaign for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic – which is our final fundraising push to raise the £1 million we need to reach our £12 million target to complete the Hall refurbishment programme.

The event included a film presentation; presentations from Michael Eakin and Vasily Petrenko during which Vasily read a message of support from Bryn Terfel; and a performance by a brass quintet from the Orchestra - Tim Jackson, Simon Cowen, Brendan Ball, Robin Haggart and Paul Marsden performing the music of Shostakovich and Gershwin. The event generated universally positive feedback from those who attended.

Our plans will significantly improve the experience of the Hall for our resident musicians, visiting artists and our audiences. Subject to us reaching our fundraising target, works to the Hall will commence in Spring 2014, with the venue undergoing a period of closure from 24 May until late October 2014. The full programme of works will be completed during 2015, the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

The wonderful news is that, thanks to major grants from Arts Council England, Liverpool City Council, a number of Trusts and Foundations, and the extraordinary generosity of private donors, we have in place over 90% of the £12 million the refurbishment is going to cost.

The finishing line is within touching distance. On the facing page, find out more about Love Music and how you can support our campaign, or visit www.liverpoolphil.com where you can watch the a short film featuring interviews with some of our musicians and supporters talking with passion about what music and Liverpool Philharmonic means to them.

‘We are so close to making this wonderful project a reality, and you can help us to raise the rest of the money that we need to make it happen. I hope that when we meet in October 2014 you will sit down in Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and think to yourself, “I helped to make this happen”. There will be no one more grateful for your support than me.’ Vasily Petrenko Chief Conductor

‘What a pleasure it has been to spend some quality musical times in Liverpool over the past few weeks and a treat to work with your fabulous orchestra and chief conductor. Congratulations on getting so far in raising the money you need (for the refurbishment). In these challenging financial times, that’s really a great achievement. Carry on the fabulous work and best wishes for a successful campaign and I can’t wait to come back to see the results and perform with even more gusto!’ Bryn Terfel OBE (extract of BrynTerfel’s message of support read at the Love Music campaign launch)

LOVE MUSIC THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE ROYAL LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC AN INSPIRING PLACE

THE NEW SCHEME

HOW YOU CAN HELP

‘I knew as soon as I stepped foot into Liverpool Philharmonic Hall for the first time that it was an inspiring place, and also that it would need investment to meet the challenges of the future. The time for that investment has come. I hope that you will consider getting involved and giving your support to our vision for the refurbishment of our beautiful home. We won’t be able to realise our ambitious plans for our future without your help.’

• New box office and refreshed foyer areas

We have raised 90% of our funding target of £12 million to complete the refurbishment with major support from our Principal Funders, Arts Council England and Liverpool City Council, and from other generous donors.

Vasily Petrenko Chief Conductor Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra

• Reinvigorated Grand Foyer Bar • New accessible seating in the Grand Circle of the auditorium • New lift linking all foyers and the auditorium • Improved backstage and production facilities for our resident musicians and visiting artists • An exciting new smaller scale venue for performances and our learning programme • Reduced energy consumption

We must raise a further £1 million to unlock that funding. If you are interested in supporting Love Music The Campaign for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, or in finding out more about the refurbishment, please contact one of our fundraising team by telephoning 0151 210 2921, or email fundraising@liverpoolphil.com To make an online donation please visit liverpoolphil.com/lovemusic

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MUSICIANS THELMA HANDY joint jeader Why did you decide to become a musician?

I wasn't really any good at anything else!

What's the one performance from your career that sticks in your mind?

Mozart’s Posthorn Serenade with Christoph Eschenbach in the Swiss Alps. It was wonderful music and played in the most magical setting.

What's the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you on stage?

Having to play a concerto in Liverpool Philharmonic Hall wearing nothing but my pyjamas and barefoot!

Interview

If you could work with one musician, living or dead, who would it be and why?

Barbra Streisand, believe it or not. I would love to have the chance to share the stage with one of the last great larger than life superstars.

Could you give us an example of the downside of the profession, something that the average concert-goer might not know about?

Often, by the time I get home the pub has shut! Also, I find that at the end of the evening my eyes are smarting and a bit pink due to having not blinked enough during the performance.

Does the touring lifestyle bring out rock star behaviour in the orchestra?

All I will say is that an orchestra knows how to let down its hair ...

Have you witnessed any serious diva strops in your time as a musician?

There was one notable occasion when a particular singer had the back of a major concert hall rebuilt so as not to have to see any member of the orchestra. I did think that was a bit much.

What's the biggest challenge facing musicians like you these days?

To make sure that a comprehensive music education is available to all children. Without that there will be no audiences and musicians of tomorrow.

What's the best thing about being a musician?

Music is the ultimate means of communication, and to be able to do this with a group of friends who can feel and respond to every nuance in a fraction of a second is an absolute privilege.

On 1 September, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra returned to the world’s biggest classical music festival, the BBC Proms, and for the first time, with two of our children’s ensembles, Liverpool Philharmonic Children’s Choirs and In Harmony Liverpool featuring West Everton Children’s Orchestra.

The Big Proms Bear Hunt based on Michael Rosen’s much-loved children’s book was presented by the author and included music from the classical repertoire and films all bound together with original music by Liverpool-based composer, Ian Stephens and conducted by Matthew Coorey. Children’s books illustrator Tony Ross, whose credits include the Horrid Henry series, drew pictures LIVE on big screens.

83 musicians of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and 140 children aged from 7 years, accompanied by near-on 50 Liverpool Philharmonic staff and parenthelpers travelled to London on a speciallychartered Virgin Trains Pendolino - dubbed the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Express for the Prom. The trip also included transporting by train and road, 88 instruments and a vast percussion section for the professional musicians; and 48 instruments and more percussion for the children’s orchestra.
