Christmas Cracker! Liverpool Philharmonic enjoyed a bumper Festive Season with 44,539 tickets sold for the seasonal programme compared to 42,575 sold last year and 38,442 in 2008.

A long-established Liverpool tradition, the annual Spirit of Christmas carol concerts are a wonderful opportunity to hear the combined musical forces of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir and Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir. We were delighted to welcome soprano Lesley Garrett this year as presenter, who brought her renowned Yorkshire warmth to proceedings, and treated audiences to her own performances of seasonal music and readings too. These concerts, along with Rudolph on Hope Street, Peter and the Wolf, Polar, Handel’s Messiah, as well as many others suitable for all the family, completed our traditional Christmas and New Year festive programme. ‘Deck the halls with boughs of holly – and with two bow and light-laden trees, then illuminate the whole in seasonal rosy hues. Serve with a large portion of traditional carols (and a wintry ‘wonderland’ outside) and you have an evening Scrooge would be pushed to resist.’ Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo reviews Spirit of Christmas.

News

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra made its first ever tour to China in October 2010. Liverpool’s flag was flown at two of China’s most prestigious festivals in two of its most important cities. Our motto of “playing for Liverpool on the world stage” was well and truly illustrated as the Orchestra played 6 concerts in 8 days; 3 in the Shanghai Concert Hall and a gala concert at the World EXPO, supporting the City of Liverpool’s presence there; and 2 concerts in the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. Concert programmes featured the music of Elgar and Shostakovich with Vasily Petrenko, the John Lennon

Songbook under the baton of John Wilson, and a schools’ concert, conducted by Vasily, and presented by Alasdair Malloy. The tour was a both a critical and box office success and we are hugely grateful to Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Vision and the University of Liverpool whose support was crucial in the tour’s success.

Travel the World with Liverpool Philharmonic

It was a pleasure to see the friendly faces of a group of 22 of our supporters, who had made the epic trip to China to support the Orchestra on tour with Maestro Travel. ‘It was an incredible trip and wonderful to see the Orchestra perform in Shanghai and Beijing’ said group member and regular Liverpool Philharmonic concert-goer, Lorna Dobson. ‘Hopefully, with such outstanding performances, the Orchestra will be invited to return and you can guarantee my support for them there then.’

Silver Song Ian Tracey celebrated 25 years as Chorusmaster of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir at the traditional, annual performance of Handel’s Messiah, which he conducted on 6th January.

He is now an Honorary Member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society. Ian, who has also just celebrated his 30th anniversary as organist at Liverpool Cathedral, has an association with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir that goes back to the age of five when, already learning piano, he was taken to his first concert, (a Carol Concert), by his parents. During 25 years as Chorusmaster, Ian has enjoyed close working relationships with conductors Sir Charles Groves, Vernon ‘Tod’ Handley – who he describes as his mentor, Libor Pešek and latterly, Vasily Petrenko. Under Ian’s guidance, the Choir has performed to acclaim in Liverpool and all over the world, including a fruitful working relationship in the 1990s with Sir Paul McCartney when they sang his Oratorio. Ian says he still loves his role as Chorusmaster. ‘I find it very energising. It’s all so varied, it’s all so different. At the moment I’m working on James MacMillan’s St John Passion (20 April) and it’s very stimulating to rub shoulders with these people and hear their thoughts on music.’ (Extracts taken from an interview with Catherine Jones, Arts Editor of the Liverpool Echo and Ian Tracey, reproduced by kind permission of Trinity Mirror/Liverpool Echo)

Ian Tracey encourages the Spirit of Christmas audience to sing-along.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir has, of course, always been central to the life of Liverpool Philharmonic, and in this current season, their performances have again demonstrated the Choir’s versatility. They sang their usual pivotal role in the Spirit of Christmas concerts and Messiah; earlier in the year they performed in Mahler’s symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 and started the 2010/11 season singing at our annual Open Day in September. Since then, they’ve a performed Carmina Burana and given a concert at New Brighton’s Floral Pavilion. Coming up later this year are performances of Brahms’ German Requiem (10 March), MacMillan’s St. John Passion (20 April) and Elgar’s 3 Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands (10 June).

‘The Choir produced magical pianissimo moments but blossomed into a striking fortissimo which, along with the Orchestra itself, did great justice to this moving symphony.’

Glyn Môn Hughes, Liverpool Daily Post/Classical Source, reviews Mahler Symphony No. 2

What are they talking about?! Andrew Cornall and Vasily Petrenko chat on a sunny day, pre-concert in Southport Victoria Park!

The Leaving of Liverpool

At the end of 2010, Liverpool Philharmonic said goodbye to Andrew Cornall, Executive Director (Artistic Policy – Artists & Ensembles) who has been appointed Vice President, Artists and Repertoire, with international recording company EMI Classics.

Andrew joined Liverpool Philharmonic in June 2004 from Decca Music Group, where he had been Senior Executive Producer since 1995. During six and half years with the organisation he has led artistic policy for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and its associated ensembles, including contemporary music group, Ensemble 10/10. He spotted, and was instrumental in bringing a 29year-old Vasily Petrenko to Liverpool.

Michael Eakin, Liverpool Philharmonic’s Chief Executive commented; ‘Andrew is an exceptional and talented colleague, who has made an immense contribution to the renaissance of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of our Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko. It is a measure of the quality of his work here that he should have been approached for this significant appointment.’ 10

encore www.liverpoolphil.com

‘It has been a privilege to work with so many hugely talented musicians and colleagues here at the Phil as well as with many partners throughout the City’ said Andrew. ‘These years have been a special time in my life and I look forward to maintaining my links with this unique organisation and watching and enjoying its continued successes with great pleasure.’

Ed Smith has been appointed Interim Executive Director (Orchestra & Ensembles), whilst a new Executive Director is appointed. A Liverpudlian, Ed began his career at Liverpool Philharmonic after graduating with a degree in music from Durham University. As manager of Merseyside Youth Orchestra, he first met Simon Rattle as a 15 year-old percussionist. He became Deputy Chief Executive in 1975. At 27, (the youngest orchestra CEO in Britain at the time) he was appointed Chief Executive to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra where he stayed for 22 years. He installed a 25-year-old Simon Rattle as principal conductor and was also instrumental in the conception, design and building of Symphony Hall. Ed has since worked with orchestras worldwide most recently with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra where he appointed Gustavo Dudamel as Music Director in 2006. He returned to the UK after 6 years in Sweden to pursue a freelance career. ‘It’s wonderful to be back working with this great orchestra in this great hall after starting here 41 years ago’ said Ed. ‘It’s an extraordinary coincidence that Deputy Orchestra Manager, Jane Moss recently returned here from working with orchestras in London – she typed my appointment letter in 1970! Liverpool attracts! I’m looking forward to working with Michael, his colleagues and the musicians in ensuring that symphonic music thrives as it always has done in this great city.’ For more about Ed, visit www.edsmithconsulting.com

Virgin Trains employees Sue Patton TM Liverpool and Nicky Baxter CSA Liverpool and their families joined in the festive fun at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s Rudolph on Hope Street concerts. Here they are pictured with brass section musicians Robin Haggart, Simon Chappell, Paul Marsden, Simon Cowen and Brendan Ball after the concert on a snowy Saturday in Liverpool.

Liverpool Philharmonic is delighted to announce Virgin Trains as our Travel Partner, just as the travel provider is set to carry its 250 millionth passenger.

The new deal, which extends to Spring 2012, cements a partnership approach to working together, begun in 2008, when Virgin Trains began providing travel assistance for some of our Learning activities. Most recently, the company’s support helped transport 100 children and their families from West Everton to London's South Bank Centre to see the internationally acclaimed Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra, an ensemble that has emerged through Venezuela's El Sistema, the inspirational model on which In Harmony in West Everton is based.

Virgin Trains is a major presence in the North West, with a significant staff base in Liverpool. The travel provider has doubled passenger numbers to 28 million a year over the last six years and is now set to carry its 250 millionth passenger since taking over the West Coast franchise in March 1997. Key elements in the new partnership include mutually beneficial special offers and value-added promotions for Liverpool Philharmonic and Virgin Trains’ customers; and

tickets packages and ticket incentive schemes for concerts by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra for use by Virgin Trains for customers and employees.

Millicent Jones, Liverpool Philharmonic’s Executive Director (Marketing, Communications & Fundraising) said “Virgin Trains has an important role in the City as a travel provider and also as an ambassador for its cultural offer, bringing many thousands of visitors here to experience it. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Virgin Trains to provide opportunities for the company’s staff and customers to enjoy the great music of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra here in Liverpool.”

‘New Folk may have its place, but as Christy Moore so deftly demonstrated at Philharmonic Hall this weekend, it can’t hold a candle to old folk. 10/10’ Liverpool Daily Post

Growing In Harmony

In Harmony ... Venezuelan Style! In September, the Simon Bolivar String Quartet, which has emerged through Venezuela’s El Sistema on which In Harmony is modelled, joined the West Everton Children’s Orchestra for their regular Friday afternoon rehearsal at the Friary. Later, an informal concert for the children, their parents, wider community and invited guests featured a performance by the Quartet and the West Everton Super Strings (former members of West Everton Children’s Orchestra) of ‘Autumn’ from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Several Super Strings members and their families attended the sell out concert given by the Quartet in St Georges Hall Concert Room to launch the new season of the Rodewald Concert Series. The Quartet’s visit featured in a feature article on El Sistema and In Harmony in The Observer, written by Ed Vuillamy.

The on-going independent evaluation of In Harmony Liverpool is confirming that children at Faith Primary School are continuing to improve their educational attainment while the project goes from strength to strength as we work with partners in West Everton to broaden the reach of the project and engage more families in music.

In recent months, we‘ve launched the West Everton Junior Strings, an advanced level chamber group for primary aged children excelling in West Everton; orchestral percussion sectional rehearsals; a revamped after school programme including composition and music technology; increased engagement of children from Beacon Primary School; performances by the West Everton Children’s Orchestra at Hope Street Feast and at the Cornerstone Festival; and a further round of In Harmony @ Home concerts in children’s living rooms for family and friends. rehearsal venue at the Friary.

In Harmony ... with Tasmin! In November, the renowned violinist Tasmin Little led master classes for both the West Everton Children’s Orchestra and West Everton Super Strings, culminating in a short concert for children and their families in Liverpool Philharmonic’s rehearsal venue at the Friary.

‘Petrenko and the RLPO have achieved a triumph. The orchestral playing is ripe, detailed, lithe, concentrated and intense. Petrenko has full measure not only of the symphony’s overarching architecture but also of the individual facets that make it such a fascinating conundrum. ... This is a terrific performance.’ ***** Geoffrey Norris, The Telegraph; November 2010

‘This version of the Tenth Symphony, the latest in the RLPO’s Naxos cycle, boasts the finesse of a top western orchestra but also the splenetic attack usually associated with a Russian ensemble.’ ****Andrew Clark ,Financial Times; November 2010 "The orchestral playing is superb, even stunning in places, and Petrenko has the measure of this great work."
