Thanks to major grants from Arts Council England, Liverpool City Council, a number of Trusts and Foundations, and the extraordinary generosity of private donors, Liverpool Philharmonic is almost there in raising the necessary investment for the refurbishment of the Hall.

Arts Council England, who have committed £7.5 million to the project have therefore agreed that work can begin on the project as planned.

Works to the Hall will commence in Spring 2014, with the venue undergoing a period of closure from 24 May until the late Autumn when it will reopen at the start of our 175th anniversary season.

The full programme of works, which will include an exciting new smaller-scale venue for performances and our learning programme will be completed during 2015, the 175th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

You can still support Love Music: The Campaign for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic to make sure we reach our fundraising target. Details are on the opposite page, or visit www.liverpoolphil.com where you can watch a short film featuring interviews with some of our musicians and supporters talking very passionately about what music and Liverpool Philharmonic means to them.

THE NEW SCHEME

HOW YOU CAN HELP

‘I knew as soon as I stepped foot into Liverpool Philharmonic Hall for the first time that it was an inspiring place, and also that it would need investment to meet the challenges of the future. The time for that investment has come. I hope that you will consider getting involved and giving your support to our vision for the refurbishment of our beautiful home. We won’t be able to realise our ambitious plans for our future without your help.’

• New box office and refreshed foyer areas

We have nearly reached our funding target to complete the refurbishment with major support from our Principal Funders, Arts Council England and Liverpool City Council, and from other generous donors.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MUSICIANS ALAN PENDLEBURY principal bassoon

Alan joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 1984, and will retire in April this year. His final concert with the Orchestra, conducted by Vasily Petrenko, will be on Thursday 10 April, and features Mahler’s Adagio from Symphony No.10 and Das Lied von der Erde.

Alan says he learned his chosen instrument “because the school had one and I liked the colour of the case!”

It was attending Hallé concerts “most of which were conducted by Sir John Barbirolli –these were legendary performances” that fired up Alan to pursue a professional music career. “I guess doing Metallurgy didn’t appeal and one year in the Turner and Newell laboratory was enough.” Gary Carpenter dedicated his Bassoon Concerto to Alan, Vasily Petrenko and the Orchestra, who gave the world premiere performance in November 2011.

On Alan’s performance of Michael Daugherty’s Dead Elvis with Ensemble 10/10 in 2012, The Observer’s Fiona Maddock commented: “Dead Elvis features a bebopping solo bassoon as Elvis, who dallies with Las Vegas excess, but has moments of lyricism too. RLPO principal bassoon Alan Pendlebury gave himself up to the part, even dressing in white Elvis suit and wig and managing to play on bended knee. I hope they paid him appropriately.”

Alan will be greatly missed, though everyone in Liverpool Philharmonic and no doubt all our concert-goers wish him well in his retirement. Here are some of Alan’s reflections on a distinguished career.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Listening to a 78 of Policeman’s Holiday in about 1956

If you could play a different instrument, which one would it be?

The cors anglais – even taking the instrument out of the case can tell a story –it is that most characterful of instruments.

Thank you …

What has been your most memorable moment with the Orchestra?

While it is difficult to pin down a favourite performance, I think opening the Prague Spring Festival in the presence of the Prime Minister Vaclav Havel in 1993 was quite something.

What would you most like to do if you weren’t a musician?

I would like to be a successful racing tipster –particularly on the jump courses –naturally the information would have to stay with me to protect the odds! In retirement I’m looking forward to just spending more time doing things like bird watching and racing, crosswords. It will be a novelty not to have one’s entire life ruled by a schedule.

What do you like most about Liverpool?

There are many great things about working in Liverpool –above all though the spirit, humour and interest of the people of the City. It is a City which knows how to party – how to innovate – and how to show compassion – not a bad trio!

What is your favourite Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra recording? Suk’s Summer’s Tale conducted by Libor Pešek KBE.

To Dr. B.A. Proctor who adopts Alan Pendlebury and to all those donors who have adopted musicians in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra through Liverpool Philharmonic’s Adopt a Player scheme. Adopting one of the following musicians will give us a ‘full house’: James Clark and Thelma Handy (joint leaders), David Ruby (viola), Mark Lindley (cello), Simon Chappell (tbass trombone), Josephine Frieze (percussion). If you would like to find out more about how you can adopt a player in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, gain a wonderful insight into the life of Liverpool Philharmonic, with opportunities to meet your adopted musician and others in the Orchestra, contact the fundraising team on 0151 210 2921 or email fundraising@liverpoolphil.com.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

The Heritage Lottery Fund has made an award to Liverpool Philharmonic to support plans to stage an exhibition and accompanying events, based on our archive, that celebrate the organisation’s history during our 175th anniversary in 2015.

Liverpool Philharmonic’s extensive archive is held at Liverpool Records Office in the splendidly refurbished Liverpool Central Library and we will be working with colleagues at Central Library on this project.

The exhibition is planned to run from January 2015 to August 2015 in Liverpool Central Library. After this, a significant portion of it will move to Liverpool Philharmonic Hall where it will be housed permanently.

MARY, MARY – HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? Everyone at Liverpool Philharmonic is grateful to our friend, concert-goer and supporter, Miss Mary Riddoch who has voluntarily and lovingly tended the terrace garden in the Rodewald Suite, including planting a variety of seasonal plants and flowers since 1996. Mary’s green-fingers are much admired by us all at Liverpool Philharmonic and visitors alike. The Hall reburbishment programme will ensure that parts of the open spaces in the complex are planned to be environmentally friendly and encourage birds and insects. ← Miss Mary Riddoch enjoying the terrace garden in the Rodewald Suite

HOPE STREET HOTEL AND THE LONDON CARRIAGE WORKS CELEBRATE THEIR 10TH ANNIVERSARY

Who can remember AJ Buckingham Ltd the furniture manufacturer across the road - the blue railings, the glass canopy and buddleia growing from the top windows? Liverpool John Moores University became Liverpool Philharmonic’s Principal Partner in 2013, joining Investec Wealth and Investment.

One aspect of the partnership has involved working with Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor Nigel Weatherill and his team in establishing ways to welcome students to Liverpool and immerse them in the city’s cultural life.

The Liverpool Philharmonic Student Pass offers the opportunity for 400 LJMU students to attend concerts, with a friend, to every Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra concert in the season. Students are allocated passes through entering a prize draw competition each term, with the competition open to students studying full or part-time on any degree (undergraduate, postgraduate or research degrees) whether they are a home, EU or international student. The student pass scheme is supporting Liverpool Philharmonic’s audience development in encouraging more under 25s to attend concerts.

Gambier Terrace resident Dave Brewitt bought the semi derelict building in 1998, covered it with scaffolding in 2001 and opened Liverpool’s first boutique hotel with restaurant in 2003. The original 1860’s company name was only discovered in the plaster work above the door when the canopy came down and became an obvious name for the restaurant. (We have never been able to find the parent company in London.)

On Thanksgiving Day 2003, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s Principal Conductor at the time, the American Gerard Schwarz enjoyed a private dinner for 30 friends and family; the first diners arrived on December 15 2003 and the first guests checked in on 12 February 2004. Since then we have welcomed the American State Department and Secretary of State Dr Condoleezza Rice with our own Secretary of State, Jack Straw; Hollywood legend Jane Russell; football legend Maradona; legions of pop and classical music stars; and a plethora of Nobel prize winners. As Liverpool Philharmonic’s Hotel Partner, to celebrate our anniversary, we’re offering all audience members a complimentary bedroom upgrade in Hope Street Hotel and / or a complimentary glass of wine in The London Carriage Works. Bring your Liverpool Philharmonic concert ticket with you and we’ll treat you to a glass of wine when you take two courses from our a la carte menu or three courses from our prix fixe menu.

Important Information About Car Parking at Liverpool Philharmonic In April we will begin work on the refurbishment of Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Liverpool Philharmonic car park will be open through to the end of the season on Friday 23 May. To help us manage the construction works Liverpool Philharmonic will be applying to Liverpool City Council for some temporary road closures. Once the road closures are in place (from sometime in April), access to the car park will be from the Catharine Street end of Caledonia Street and the journey from your car to your seat will be longer as you will need to walk round to the front of the Hall via Myrtle Street.
