REFURBISHMENT OF LIVERPOOL PHILHARMONIC HALL A STEP CLOSER
News
the royal liverpool Philharmonic has submitted a planning application and listed building consent to liverpool city council(lcc) for its proposed £12 million refurbishment of the grade ii* listed liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
Having successfully applied for seed funding of £634,000 from arts council england (ace) in 2012, liverpool Philharmonic appointed architects caruso st. John to lead a team in developing the designs for the refurbishment of the 1939 concert hall, home of the royal liverpool Philharmonic orchestra, and one of the uk’s premier arts and entertainment venues. 2014 is the 75th anniversary of the current Hall opening its doors.
liverpool Philharmonic is now seeking to secure the necessary public investment for the refurbishment of the Hall, including a further £7.5 million investment from ace and a range of other, private funding sources. these will include the launch in september 2013 of a public giving campaign to meet the £12 million cost of the planned refurbishment to the Hall. liverpool city council has agreed a capital contribution of £2 million, contingent on liverpool Philharmonic successfully attracting the additional investment from ace, who will make a decision on liverpool Philharmonic’s
application to its capital grants programme by June.
subject to securing the required investment for the refurbishment, liverpool Philharmonic will commence works to the Hall in spring 2014, with the venue undergoing a period of closure from may 24 until the end of october 2014. the full programme of works will be completed during 2015, the 175th anniversary of the founding of the royal liverpool Philharmonic. ↑ Artist’s impressions of the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall refurbishment.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MUSICIANS 5 QUESTIONS WITH PAULA MULDOON First Violins Paula joined the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2012
What is your earliest musical experience?
my five older brothers and sisters all were required to play piano growing up, and after they would practice, at 2-3 years old i'd sit down at the piano and pretend to play as well (faking not just the notes but also the page turns). i started piano lessons with one of my sisters when i was five but only practiced when i was bribed with ice cream. i had flings with viola (gasp), flute, oboe, and organ, but the violin was always my favourite - no ice cream required.
Who is your biggest musical influence?
i've been blessed to have so many amazing teachers in my life who have all given me so much. i've also been inspired by so many of my students and friends. more abstractly, i really love 18th century counterpoint and could sit for hours writing it. i get nerdily excited when cool chords and nifty voice-leading lines come up in the repertoire. i also really love early music, especially choral music. (Part of my disreputable past includes a stint as a choral director specializing in renaissance music.)
What is your best memory of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra?
live BBc radio 3 broadcasts! i am an american anglophile and grew up holding the BBc in great reverence. to actually be broadcast live on "auntie" (as i have recently learned it's called) is super cool (as we'd say in america). now if only i could understand cricket...
What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
cake! my section loves cake! We have cake for birthdays, cake for fun, lots of cake! i am gradually introducing american desserts (chocolate chip cookies!) into our diet. aside from the cake and camaraderie, i love rehearsing on the stage of liverpool Philharmonic Hall (such a privilege to have our own beautiful hall) and getting to perform absolutely amazing music with lovely and talented people. did i mention cake?
What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you? dress well and smile.
THANK YOU TO…
... all those donors who have recently adopted the following musicians in the royal liverpool Philharmonic orchestra through liverpool Philharmonic’s adopt a Player scheme
