The Romance of Rachmaninov
The Best of Bowie
Sunday 27 February 2.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
Monday 7 March 8pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall

Rossini Overture, Semiramide Dukas La Péri: Fanfare and poème dansé Rachmaninov Symphony No.2
Domingo Hindoyan conductor Eva Thorarinsdottir violin
Is Rachmaninov’s Second the most romantic symphony ever written? Let’s just say that it’s got to be a contender: a true Russian epic, swept by storms, glowing with emotion and bursting with the kind of melody that you never forget. Domingo Hindoyan conducts a real Liverpool favourite, first though, he sets the mood in sumptuous style. Rossini’s overture sparkles with Italian sunshine. And then Paul Dukas whirls us away to an imaginary Orient, for a tale of mystery, magic and (of course) love.
David Bowie’s former producer and bassist; Tony Visconti, and drummer; Woody Woodmansey, launch their new Bowie project - The Best Of Bowie, featuring long-time fan and friend Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory and the all-star Holy Holy band.
Thursday 24 February 7.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
Imagine a symphony as vast as Russia itself – a musical journey on an epic scale, swept by storms, bursting with melody, and (of course) glowing with tenderness and beauty. It might sound very like Rachmaninov’s magnificent Second Symphony: one of those pieces that we just adore
Domingo Hindoyan conductor
playing. Domingo Hindoyan conducts a real Liverpool favourite, conjures up Dukas’ fairytale world, and begins with an entirely new adventure: a journey deep into the woods with the brilliant young British composer Grace-Evangeline Mason.
The band will perform iconic hits and cult classics from Bowie’s extensive back catalogue with Visconti on bass. One of the world’s most celebrated producers, Visconti played on Bowie’s first two records and went on to produce ten of David’s albums throughout his career. Drummer Woody performed and recorded with Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust era as one of The Spiders from Mars (Bowie’s backing band). Tony and Woody are joined by Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory as frontman of the Holy Holy band.

Visconti, Woody and Glenn bring the magic of Bowie to life, with an intoxicating mix of adoration and respect for their old friend and fellow band member.

Guitarist and composer Juan Martin plays and introduces his compositions within the forms of the great tradition of flamenco. His exquisite style is enhanced through minimal amplification to capture his very pure flamenco sound.
Come and join the Orchestra and Liverpool Philharmonic Children’s Choirs, conductor Melvin Tay and tour guide Alasdair Malloy on a sensational Symphonic Safari to meet all sorts of exciting creatures!
The whole family is invited to experience the power of a full symphony orchestra at this lively, interactive concert. Fidgeting is allowed and fancy dress is positively encouraged. The concert will last about an hour.
Expect some awesome animal antics as we encounter fur, feathers and fins from far and near with music to match. Come dressed as your favourite animal and bring a cuddly animal toy to join in the fun!
We recommend the family concerts are most suitable for children aged 4-10 years.
Sarah Hicks conductor Ian Buckle piano America: the land of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Cracking tunes too – whether the toetapping rhythms of George Gershwin’s jazz-age Manhattan, the southern heat of Catfish Row, or the supercharged urban energy of Leonard Bernstein, footloose and on the town. But our American guest conductor Sarah Hicks knows that there’s another side to every story, and today she introduces the colourful Gaelic Symphony by the 19th-century Boston composer Amy Beach: stirring sounds, from a very uncommon woman indeed. This performance is made possible by a grant from the Association of British Orchestra’s Sirens programme, whose aim is to advance and promote the understanding of music by women.
February - July 2022
He has recorded 20 albums, which followed his performance in the Spanish film, Donde tu estés at 17, and has since made three films with his dance company. His success and skill led to him performing at Picasso’s 90th birthday celebrations, which in turn resulted in his groundbreaking album Picasso Portraits. Voted into the top 3 flamenco guitarists in the world by Guitar Player USA, Juan Martín has toured the world playing concerts from Shanghai and Melbourne to New York as well as in the Montreux Jazz Festival, which included a performance alongside Miles Davis.

Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony
An Evening with Ni Maxine: An Ode to Billie Holiday
Sunday 3 April 2.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
Thursday 7 April 8pm Music Room
Beethoven Overture, Leonore No.3 Sibelius Violin Concerto Prokofiev Symphony No.5
Join Neo-Jazz singer-songwriter Ni Maxine for an evening of live jazz to honour Lady Day herself, Billie Holiday. On the very day she’d be celebrating her 107th birthday, Ni will take you on a journey through some of her most admired works, with an elegant 21st century twist.
Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
Domingo Hindoyan conductor María Dueñas violin In wartime Moscow, when Prokofiev conducted the premiere of his Fifth Symphony, he had to wait for the sound of gunfire to die away first. This “symphony of the greatness of the human spirit” is forged from iron and steel, but today Domingo Hindoyan will make it catch fire – a thrilling contrast to the icy vistas and elemental power of Sibelius’s hugely popular violin concerto, played by the astonishing young virtuoso María Dueñas. Add Beethoven at his most stirring and – well, hearing is believing!
February - July 2022
With a sense of duty to reflect the times, Ni Maxine presents the story of a Black woman navigating today’s world, with a nod to Billie and Nina Simone. Joined by a full band, this will be a night to remember.
The Sorrows Away Tour
The Unthanks Saturday 16 April 7.30pm Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
After two years off the road, The Unthanks return with the rich and colourful sound of their elevenpiece ensemble, showcasing their forthcoming new album Sorrows Away, alongside favourites such as ‘Magpie’, ‘The King Of Rome’, and ‘Mount The Air’. Sorrows Away is the long-anticipated follow-up to Mount The Air, and as the title suggests, promises to be a blues-buster and a step into the light for a band known more for melancholy and well, sorrow. At the nucleus of a constantly evolving unit is the traditional upbringing of Tyneside sisters Rachel and
Becky Unthank and the arrangements and writing of composer, pianist, producer and Yorkshireman, Adrian McNally. The Unthanks’ approach to storytelling makes easy bedfellows of tradition and adventure, direct social commentary and sophisticated harmony, heartbreaking empathy and glacial minimalism.

Domingo Hindoyan conductor Sonya Yoncheva soprano When the Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva first sang at the Royal Opera House in 2014, critics hailed her as a “rising star”. Now, in 2022, she’s conquered the world’s greatest stages – with one critic describing her voice as “the most beautiful thing that can currently be experienced”. But come and hear for yourself, as she joins husband Domingo Hindoyan in the liquid loveliness of Martucci’s luscious Italian songs: think Puccini, think Verdi, and enjoy emotionallycharged masterpieces by Verdi and Schumann too.
