Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Review of the Year 2010 | 2011

Foreword

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic has continued to go from strength to strength in what is proving to be a golden period of artistic achievement. The musical vision and leadership of our Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko and the playing of the musicians of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and our associated ensembles, in concerts and on recordings, continues to attract growing audiences, plaudits, critical acclaim and awards.

We have enjoyed one of our busiest ever international touring years. Playing to capacity houses, it has been clear that Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s dynamic musical partnership is ever more widely known and acclaimed. These tours, along with a number of new, critically acclaimed recordings released during the year, together with our increased number of concert broadcasts with Classic FM, and BBC radio and television, have helped to bring the music of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to a world-wide audience. Liverpool Philharmonic's wider programme featured international artists from rock, pop, folk, roots, jazz and comedy, and our extensive Learning programme continues to offer a range of exciting opportunities to get involved in live music-making of the highest quality for thousands of people every year. Taken as a whole, this represents as strong and diverse an artistic and learning programme as any presented by one organisation in the country. It is a credit to the talent, dedication and commitment of our musicians and staff.

2

The support of so many individuals, our audiences, donors, our partners, sponsors and stakeholders has been especially magnificent this year, a challenging one financially as the effect of dramatic cuts to the public sector continue to be felt deeply. Not only have attendances for concerts by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra increased by 10% this year, along with 6% overall growth in tickets sales across the company, our supporters have also responded superbly to the Liverpool Philharmonic Challenge Fund, supported by the Kenneth Stern Trust, enabling us to raise to date over £100,000. Our partnerships with our principal funders, Arts Council England and Liverpool City Council, crucial to our ability to deliver world-class music, remain strong, with Liverpool Philharmonic leading the UNESCO City of Music bid on behalf of the City. We are immensely grateful for such support, loyalty and commitment and we will continue to do all we can to justify it. As our Chief Conductor, Vasily Petrenko has said “We rely on our audiences and supporters sharing our ambitions and we will continue to thrive if you continue to support us.”

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s renowned versatility was once again demonstrated in a broad repertoire ‘This ranks among both Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's finest achievements.’ 5***** for Mahler Symphony No.7

Concert highlights included the continuation, to sell-out audiences, of the critically acclaimed Mahler Edition concluding in December 2011, and the Shostakovich symphony cycle, of which volumes 1 to 5 in an ongoing recording project have met with international critical acclaim. Rodion Shchedrin’s Oboe Concerto commissioned by Liverpool Philharmonic was given its UK premiere by the Orchestra’s long-serving principal, Jonathan Small. A triumphant return to the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall was broadcast live simultaneously on BBC Radio 3 and BBC 4 to a global audience and featured the Orchestra’s award-winning signature performance of Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony, and Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2 with Simon Trpc˘eski. It was The Sunday Times’ Best Concert of 2010. SuperOrchestra provided 70 members of the public with the opportunity to take part in sectionals and full rehearsals with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra culminating in a performance with over 110 musicians on stage at Liverpool Philharmonic.

In August 2011, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Carl Davis, with guest soloist the young Norwegian trumpeter, Tine Thing Helseth, performed a Beatles-themed concert at Liverpool Pier Head, marking the 100th anniversary of the Liver Building and the opening of the Museum of Liverpool.

‘The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra are on a high and demand attention. Their ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ was a knockout… Petrenko looked shattered at the end, overwhelmed by the reception. He exhorted his musicians to play the finale again, converting us all to a spontaneous belief in Mahler and the RLPO in general, and Petrenko in particular.’ Review of Mahler’s Symphony No.8 at Liverpool Cathedral

‘Yeah, it’s been all well and good to have it (Mars from Holst’s The Planets) on my earphones when I’m on the bus or whatever, but I now firmly believe that if you want to hear any kind of classical music, you’ve never heard it until you’ve had nearly a hundred people bang it out right there in front of you. Vasily Petrenko Chief Conductor Our Chief Conductor’s dynamic musical partnership with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, now in its 6th year, is proving to be a golden era in the long history of Liverpool Philharmonic, and a major force to be reckoned with both in the concert hall and in the recording studio. Announced as Male Artist of the Year at the Classical BRIT Awards 2010, Vasily is making a stunning career internationally too, which benefits both Liverpool Philharmonic and the City itself. During the year, his engagements included concerts with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, NHK Symphony Orchestra; Tokyo, Accademia Di Santa Cecilia; Rome, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, L.A. Philharmonic and debuts with the Minnesota and Philadelphia Orchestras.

‘Petrenko “dazzles” Toronto with the Rite of Spring

It made me think again about what it is, exactly, that makes a great conductor. I asked [Lorin] Maazel - what is that special extra something. He paused for a second. It's a good question, and I have no idea what it is. No one knows what it is that makes a conductor special, except that you know it when you hear it. Petrenko has it.’ Sound Mind Toronto Classical Music Journal

‘Slender and boyish looking, Petrenko studied with Esa-Pekka Salonen, and he has picked up some of the qualities of a thirtysomething Salonen, particularly certain hand and arm gestures. Rhythmic incisiveness and a strong forward drive are among his strong suits. And that has worked well for him. He is a popular chief conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic; his Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich recordings are celebrated. Petrenko had the L.A. Philharmonic sounding crisp and muscular, yet in slow, lyrical passages, he was able to entice a vibrating string sound that had both grit and emotion.’

The Los Angeles Times reviews Vasily Petrenko's performance with Ukrainian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk and the LA Philharmonic of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 to an audience of over 7500 at the Hollywood Bowl.

Our contribution to Liverpool Irish Festival included the inaugural Irish Sea Sessions, featuring artists from both sides of the Irish Sea. It proved a winning formula and will be repeated in Autumn 2011, with tour dates in Belfast and Derry/Londonderry, accompanied with a new CD release of the 2010 Sessions.

‘Dancing his way through the opening night of his UK tour at the Philharmonic on Saturday night ... and what a joyful night it was. Hugh Masekela’s music had the audience dancing in the aisles by the finish’. ‘Legendary flamenco guitarist Paco Pena sent sparks into a dank November evening with a fiery fiesta of virtuoso music, dance and song.’

Buena Vista Social Club, Hugh Masekela, Marc Almond and Katie Melua were amongst the many international artists who performed at Liverpool Philharmonic during the year.

‘The visually impressive ranks of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain – five harps, a dozen double basses, numerous trumpets and a phalanx of percussion among the 160-strong contingent – are indeed matched by the power and their playing ability.’

‘The night was fantastic ... and the joy in the venue was almost tangible. The folk club ideal was upheld throughout the night, if you knew the words sing along, if you picked up the chorus - sing along! We were all a part of it and it was such an amazing thing of which to be a part.’

In Harmony Liverpool ‘The achievement is now something they are all proud of. And that will pass on – to other people and to other generations. In time it will change this place. I am so proud of her.’ Parent, Independent Evaluation Report 2011

The recently published independent evaluation of In Harmony and two Ofsted inspections during the year at Faith Primary School in West Everton reported that In Harmony is supporting Faith Primary School to develop a learning community. The children are making outstanding progress in their musical ability as individuals and as musicians in West Everton Children’s Orchestra, and are demonstrating greatly improved educational attainment in all three areas of the curriculum (reading, writing, numeracy) despite 4.25 hours per week being taken from core curriculum time to deliver the In Harmony programme.

Amongst concerts given at Liverpool Philharmonic and in community settings around the City, West Everton Children’s Orchestra also performed at London’s Southbank Centre as part of a national In Harmony event to an audience including Culture Minister, Ed Vaizey MP, Schools Minister, Nick Gibb MP, Cllr Jane Corbett and Luciana Berger MP. A number of associated ensembles have emerged from West Everton Children’s Orchestra including West Everton Junior Strings and Super Strings.

16

In Harmony is playing a central role for children, families, staff and the whole West Everton community in developing pride, confidence, achievement and wellbeing in a neighbourhood that has faced many complex challenges and deprivation over many years. The Department for Education has committed to support In Harmony for a further 12 months to 2012. In Harmony Liverpool is also supported through funding from Liverpool Primary Care Trust, Liverpool Philharmonic and private donors and we will seek to secure further support for the continuation of the project beyond 2012.

Internationally acclaimed violinist Tasmin Little leads a masterclass for some of In Harmony’s young musicians.

‘The project has brought about a cultural change in the school’s wider community, with parents and families placing prime value on music education, willingly and proudly supporting their children’s musical learning and attending performances. Parents and staff speak passionately about the way that involvement in music has changed children’s attitudes and expectations. As one parent said, ‘music has given our children respect for themselves, respect for each other, and respect for education’. Ofsted, February 2011
