Glasgow based quintet Trembling Bells are a psych folk phenomenon and all five of their albums have been released to unanimous critical acclaim. Now they bring their psych folk to Liverpool Philharmonic with their brand new album Dungeness. The influences that seeped into Dungeness are perhaps not what you’d expect. Many of the tracks feel like the end of the earth too, their folk rock sensibility acquiring a sweeping, apocalyptic grandness – both in sound and lyrics. Though it hearkens back to the ‘70s psychedelic heyday of Fairport Convention and Trees, it’s also, as comedian Stewart Lee puts it in his sleeve notes, ‘heroically now’. ‘A talent that hops genres and drops jaws’ - The Guardian

Lankum are one of the most talked about bands to come out of Ireland in decades. The Dublin four-piece combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and street-songs, classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish and American dance tunes, and their own original material. Although an acoustic group whose repertoire is fundamentally based on traditional song, influenced by legends such as Frank Harte, Planxty, The Dubliners and the Watersons, subtle traces of the group’s collective influences can be detected, ranging from American old-timey music to krautrock and drone. ‘There is folk that wants to whisper in your ear, and then there is the music of Lankum: urgent, desperate and detonating, full of lyrics and sounds smacking together like waves shattering stones in a storm’ - The Guardian *****

Bruce Cockburn Thursday 8 November 8pm £20, £23 (Premium)
Few recording artists are as creative and prolific as Bruce Cockburn and when he received an invitation to contribute a song for a documentary film about the late Canadian poet Al Purdy; Bruce created Bone On Bone. His 33rd album Bone On Bone presents an prevalent urgency and anxious tone to much of it but, more than anything, the album amounts to the deepest expression of Bruce’s spiritual concerns to date. More than forty years after embarking on his singer-songwriting career, Bruce Cockburn - who recently won the inaugural ‘People’s Voice’ Award at the Folk Alliance International conference - continues to find inspiration in the world around him and channel those ideas into songs.

And if you think the words sound crazy, just wait till you hear the music! Premiered here in Liverpool 40 years ago this month, it’s a modern classic that just won’t sit down and behave – so Ensemble 10/10 has paired it with James Wishart’s equally unhinged 23 Songs for a Mad Woman, sung by the extraordinary Louise Ashcroft, who gave their world premiere in 2006. Bring a sense of humour! Roger McGough narrator Ian Buckle piano ‘What passing bells for these who die as cattle?’ On 4 November 1918, barely a week before the Armistice, the Birkenhead poet Wilfred Owen was killed on the Western Front. 100 years on, internationally famous Liverpool poet Roger McGough (presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Poetry Please) remembers a lost generation. With poetry by Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves and of course Owen himself, plus music by Ravel and his wartime contemporaries, this should be a uniquely intimate commemoration of a tragedy whose scars – even a century later – have yet to fully heal.

Our Principal Guest Conductor, Andrew Manze, has surrounded it with music inspired by the Great War: from Gary Carpenter’s musical memorial to an uncle who fell at the Somme to Le Tombeau de Couperin, the tender tribute to lost friends as well as two additional Ravel movements orchestrated by Liverpool’s very own Kenneth Hesketh.

Brahms Symphony No.3 Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 Vasily Petrenko conductor Simon Trpčeski piano Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra When Vasily Petrenko and the Orchestra meet Macedonian powerhouse pianist Simon Trpčeski, sparks fly (just listen to any of their awardwinning recordings together). So their ‘dream team’ nickname seems particularly fitting for this latest stage in Petrenko’s exploration of the Brahms symphonies.
Brahms Piano Concerto No.1 Brahms Symphony No.4 Vasily Petrenko conductor Simon Trpčeski piano Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Every great journey comes to an end, but Johannes Brahms wasn’t going peacefully into the night, and his Fourth and final symphony concludes with some of the stormiest and yet most uplifting music he ever wrote. As Vasily Petrenko reaches the end of his Brahms odyssey, he’s joined by the phenomenal Simon Trpčeski to glance back at where it all began – with Brahms’s stupendous First Piano Concerto, a young artist wrestling with a hopeless love, in music of radiant calm and volcanic passion. Believe us: when Petrenko and Trpčeski come together, things catch fire!

Gershwin An American in Paris Copland Rodeo: Four dance episodes Dvořák Symphony N0.9, From the New World Robert Spano conductor Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Life, liberty and great tunes! Today’s concert was born in the USA, and every one of these pieces is packed with energy, ambition and melodies that are quite simply larger-than-life. But don’t just take our word for it. Guest conductor Robert Spano was born in Ohio, and whether it’s Gershwin’s young American dancing through jazz-age Paris, Copland’s cowboys celebrating the spirit of the Old West with the mother of all hoe-downs, or the heartfelt melodies and epic drama of Dvořák’s everpopular New World symphony, he knows exactly how to capture that irrepressible spirit.

Conductor Stephen Layton and a team of first class singers will bring out all the energy, inspiration and sheer joy of this true classic.

The old unjust order is crumbling. The British people are turning against a system rigged in favour of bankers, tax dodgers, and low pay bosses. A new society is in reach: one that puts the needs and aspirations of the many ahead of profit for the few. How do we build a new Britain and a new world free of the injustice that currently defines it? In our historic, turbulent times, we must debate it.

John Waters: This Filthy World Saturday 10 November 7.30pm £27.50, £33.50
In the It’s All About Me tour, the legendary Joanna Lumley will tell some of the tales of her 50 years in the business and take us through the random journey that started her career in London in the swinging’ 60s - beginning as Jean Muir’s house model and muse, progressing into fullblown photography modelling, to becoming a BAFTA winning comedian and actress. Talented Canadian actor Charles Ross single-handedly recreates season one of the Netflix sensation; all the characters, dialogue, special effects, music & eggos in one superb, upside-down show. Charles Ross grew up addicted to adventure movies and went on to co-create a number of parody shows, including One Man Lord of the Rings and One Man Star Wars. The human story of Great Britain is a million years old, and counting. The tolerant, easy-going peace we enjoy has been hard won and the places BBC2 Coast’s Neil Oliver has seen have given him a unique view and understanding of British history. Hear in his amusing and entertaining way what it all means to him, and why we need to cherish and celebrate our wonderful countries.
This Filthy World is John Waters’ one-man show, a ‘vaudeville’ act that celebrates the film career and tastes of the man. Focusing on Waters’ early negative artistic influences and his fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy and the extremes of the contemporary art world, this joyously devious monologue elevates all that is trashy in life into a call-to-arms to ‘filth followers’ everywhere.
