MIKE SORENSEN ~ SALES 641-745-7949 mike@livestockplusinc.com
Greetings, As I write this, I’m in Watertown, South Dakota in a blizzard, wishing that I was in Iowa. I rode with Dustin Carter to a sale this morning, and I will just tell ya, older folks shouldn’t ride with young folks especially when the young guy has no fear of driving in bad weather. I know exactly who taught Carter how to drive in snow; he is a retired auctioneer that could also scare the crap out of me, but he never missed a sale and never seriously wrecked. Good job Craig, but for the next lesson, teach him slower is better in bad visibility. The food report this month comes from an invite from my eldest of grandsons. Tucker had asked me if I would like to go with him and Matt to a rocky mountain oyster fry. Fortunately for me, I was home. It’s been years since I have had mountain oysters, and my rule of thumb years ago on mountain oysters is if my mother in law didn’t make ‘em I probably ain’t eating them. My mother in law is in heaven looking down on us, and I hope she forgives me
for stepping out on her and eating someone else’s Mountain Oysters, but mountain oysters just sounded good. Our group for this mountain oyster run consisted of my son-in-law Matt, my grandson Tucker, Matt Mensing, and joining us on site was Kevin Tanner. This being my first time to this function, which happens twice a year, I saw more people that I haven’t seen for many years, too many to mention. To all that visited with me, thanks for the short visits. I was glad to get to see ya. Back to the fry; I was so busy visiting, that I really wasn’t paying much attention to what was going on my plate. I got to the end of the line, and patiently waiting for my adult beverage and looked at my plate and wondered what am I going to do with all this food! On my plate was mountain oysters, catfish filets, baked beans, cole slaw, and chips. Believe it or not, I ate the whole thing and enjoyed every bite of it. Hopefully, I will be home for the next mountain oyster feed. Thanks to all that worked this event and cooked the food. Thanks Tucker and Matt for the invite.
And just to keep things straight and on the up and up, that can of beer in front of Tucker is an empty that belonged to the last group at this table. And as you probably have

COMMENTARY
You Are Not Heros by Dalle Justine Rutledge
Dear PETA, Where are you now? In the past week, wildfires have riddled, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Cattle, horses, and numerous other animals are dead or badly burned, not to mention the human lives that were taken trying to save them. So, I ask you again. Where are you now? You’re always there to tell us how wrong our industry is for raising animals to feed the world. I’ve seen you brand yourselves with hot irons to martyr yourselves for cattle. You are always at the truck stops harassing cattle-pots and at rodeos with your video cameras condemning the industry for its alleged mistreatment of livestock. Mistreatment? What a joke, just like your organization. People died this week, PETA, right alongside their livestock because they were trying to save them! Where were you when cattle needed moved out of the way of the engulfing flames. Where were you when a dad had to put down his children’s beloved horses because they were so badly burned or could not breathe? Where are you as thousands of tons of hay are being rushed to the Texas panhandle to feed the remaining livestock?
18
Livestock Plus Inc.
You didn’t rush into immediate danger to save these animals. Ranchers did. The people you condemn with your bullshit propaganda risked their own lives for their livestock, for their neighbors livestock, for stranger’s livestock. One last time PETA, where are you now? Because if it’s still on your high horse when it comes to agriculture, you’re not only mistaken but blindly ignorant. Your organization is no hero, it is the epitome of hypocrisy. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals only care when it’s convenient, or the cameras are watching. Signed, A Livestock Owner

up the show. Since this is the last Angus show on the schedule of the Denver events, more breeders could catch all the shows before starting home on Saturday. There are two ways to solve the problem of six groups in a class, confine classes to five pens or put a gate or a temporary gate in front of the announcers box. This would require two permanent holes in the floor with caps when not in use and with one gate to fasten to the poles when needed to hold additional groups of bulls. However, there is really no reason classes can’t be limited to five pens of three bulls. If you wisely invest in beauty, it will be with you all the days of your life. Frank Lloyd Wright Select Sires is excited to announce the addition of Stan Lock as beef business development manager. His responsibilities will include training and mentoring beef sales representatives to provide turnkey A.I. training programs and reproductive and genetic consultation. Lock will also develop and lead large herd sales and service programs, provide expertise in stockmanship and facility design for low-stress cattle handling, or representing Select Sires Beef at industry events. Lock will be based from his home in Republic, MO. He was previously with Genex. It is easier to stay out than to get out. ~ Mark Twain A new chart from the American Angus Association shows the differences between correct and incorrect hoof structure in beef cattle. Several times I have written in this column about the way the Angus Pen and Carload Show at the Denver Stock Show is conducted. Right now, I am looking at a picture of the show ring, showing five pens of three bulls haltered to the fence and gates in the ring at the show. This picture shows five pens of three Red Angus Bulls from a few years ago. Doing the show this way would allow all the judging all of the bulls in the ring and speed

Iowa Cattlemen Come Together to Help Wildfire Victims Over the past two weeks, as cattlemen across Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas fell victim to wildfires, there has been an overwhelming desire among Iowa cattlemen to help. In response, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation are partnering with DreamDirt Farm and Ranch Real Estate on an online auction fundraiser. The most immediate need has been for hay to feed the surviving cattle. Many Iowans have stepped up and donated hay already, and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association is helping facilitate these donations, matching donations with transportation. Governor Branstad today issued a disaster proclamation lifting restrictions on oversize and overweight loads of forage throughout the state of Iowa, to help facilitate these donations. “Our cattlemen across the state are eager to help brethren cattlemen and women recover from these devastating fires,” says Matt Deppe, CEO of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.
“We are grateful for the governor’s support of our relief efforts.” While forage donations continue to come in, additional needs continue to surface for those affected. Milk replacer for orphan calves, fencing materials, and seed to re-establish pasture are merely a few examples. But as the needs grow diverse throughout the recovery process, cash donations will be important to those affected. Many county cattlemen’s associations and individual ICA members have already begun to organize generous relief efforts. The online auction idea was a result of the same desire to help felt by many in Iowa’s cattle industry. “We couldn’t stand by and not do something. We know how to raise money and the idea of an online auction quickly made its rounds in our office. We approached the good folks at the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association with our idea to give Midwesterners a way to donate to the relief efforts and they were on board from the first contact and have worked with us for days to get this up and running,” says Jason Smith, DreamDirt. The Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation, a 503(c) nonprofit organization, will coordinate the donations and auction proceeds, with 100% of the funds going to help the affected ranchers. Parties interested in donating items to the auction or taking part in the auction should visit www.iacattlemen.org for more information. n

Triangle J Ranch
Darby Line 308-627-5085
Here is a herd sire we have been searching for since we purchased W/C Lock Down a few years ago. When we saw him, we had to have him. He topped the Triangle J Ranch Sale this year. He was bid on by some of the top cattlemen in the nation, proclaimed by many to be the stoutest bull that has been produced in the Triangle J herd. 451D is an all purpose bull who moves out like a cat and maintains a lot of body and mass on the move. He is a sire whose numbers will enhance anyone’s program while still possessing a show ring phenotype that will satisfy the most discriminating cattleman looking to raise eye appealing progeny. He is one of the top herd sires to surface this year that will work on all Lock N Load, Lock Down, United and Dream On females.

One of the most important decisions we make as cattlemen each year is deciding what bulls to use this coming season. I believe it to be one of the most exciting decisions – just ask my wife, I think she was starting to get annoyed with the bull picture text messages 3x a day. While an exciting process, it can be a little nerve wracking as it is a decision that affects genetic progress and the direction of the herd for years into the future. There are so many variables that come into play when deciding on a bull…perhaps the most important is having a goal in mind for the offspring. Are we selling bulls? Raising replacement females? Selling show heifers? Raising growthy/good feeder calves to sell in the fall? What’s the market we are dealing with? When going through sale catalogs, these questions are playing a role in what bulls make the cut. In the past, our breeding decisions have involved going through our current semen inventory, reviewing our cow herd and current calf crop, and reevaluating our goals – then ordering our bull crop on the internet. Tamar and I have been on the “bull hunt” for a couple years now – with the intention of finding a good walking herd sire that would put less pressure on our AI program. Through the coaching of some great mentors (and family), we knew that the opportunity to “get in on a catalog bull” was something we would eventually like to do. We made an agreement, that we weren’t going to push it though, we weren’t going to force something that wasn’t there…when the right one came along, we would just know. This fall I sent a ridiculous amount of bull pictures to my wife – but each one came and went. We were just holding out for that feeling… Well, February came and went, we had gone to look at a couple bulls in person and had decided that our need for another walking herd sire was not something we could put off any longer, so we were going to buy one. Just a couple days after making this decision, an opportunity literally fell into our laps. Maybe 36 hours after the call, Tamar and I were in a car headed on a 13 hour spontaneous (which Tamar doesn’t handle well) road trip to check this bull out. The road trip allowed us plenty of time to get in that “quality newlywed bonding time” but also allowed us a quick visit to Chappell, NE. I had the opportunity to live in Chappell for about a year after I finished college, it was great to finally get back out there and see some great friends! Although it was a quick trip, we had an amazing visit at Coyote Ridge Ranch. The cows and calf crop looked phenomenal (even in the 60+ mph winds). It was a great set that was a pleasure to go through! The bull? Well, we really liked him. The ride home consisted of us getting all the advice and input we could on our next steps – we really liked this bull but knew that it would be a huge COMMITMENT in many ways (not to mention financially…we all know how tight things can be for newlyweds). Well to wrap it up, we bought him! Just as any decision in the cow business, there is a bit of a leap of faith involved. We just have to trust Him with the future of our operation, especially as we enter new waters as owners of a “catalog bull.” While it was an extremely exciting and stressful time for Tamar and I, I would be remiss not to mention that on our drive home from CO, we drove through one of the KS wildfires that devastated so many ranchers. As two midwesterners, we had never witnessed anything like that before. Not a day goes by, that we don’t think about all that was lost and all the families and ranches that were affected. Please join me in continuing to pray for those families. God can work in powerful ways. God bless, Cody

First, I need to give a shout out to my sister-in-law’s (Maria) brother, Mario for his awesome sports bar in Creston, Iowa! Mario’s Sports Bar & Grill is so good and the atmosphere is pretty awesome with all the TVs! Great burgers! Tuck’s favorite is the “Mario’s Special” which is a Greek spin on the burger with feta cheese, olives and tzatziki sauce, like a gyro!! The next shout out is to Tucker and Taylor’s 4H Club, Orient Bulldogs, for volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House. It meant the world to our family, because the RMH sure was a life saver for our family while Treva spent 30 days in the hospital. We are a smaller group in our area but I wouldn’t trade any one of them for anything. Parents and kids showed up and we cleaned and counted pop tabs for the families that follow ours. The plan for the day was that after volunteering for 3 hours we would head to Zombie Burger in downtown Des Moines to eat. Now, knowing our plan for the day, I have to tell you about our car ride to Des Moines. I had all three kids with me and we were having a serious conversation about how amazing our 4-H group is for taking a Sunday to volunteer at such a meaningful place to our family. I was teary eyed as I talked and I had paused a second when Tucker let out this big sigh. I thought he would say something really meaningful. “Mom... do ya think I should get the Elvis Burger? I’m not sure I’m going to like bananas and peanut butter on my Burger.” Seriously, I had to laugh, that kid thinks only with his stomach!!! I am finding myself completely disheartened by the fact that the media has not covered the wildfire disasters in Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas. I was chatting with our Pastor after church and I asked him to please add the victims of the wildfires to our prayer list. His response was, “Oh, I hadn’t realized anything was going on. I knew there were fires but haven’t heard anything else in the news.” My heart just sank. People have literally lost their livelihoods, their homes
and some have even lost their lives trying to save their animals. It seems that the media doesn’t feel our livestock industries are interesting enough for the news. There are hundreds of thousands of cattle these people lost, or had to euthanize, or that may die of starvation because ranchers have nothing to feed the animals that were spared from the devastation! They are depending on donations from their “neighbors” and most people outside the agricultural industry aren’t even aware of the devastation. I’ve spent evenings trying to read the heart wrenching blogs and articles about ranchers losing homes and livestock, and having to put down hundreds of head of cattle that their families have spent decades on breeding and blood lines gone in minutes. We need to thank God for all of the people who have already donated their time, supplies, hay and trucking to the victims. It’s pretty overwhelming to realize the incredible people that offer their support in times of need in the agriculture community. Please take a moment to check out the online sale by Breeders World donating 100% of the money to the ranchers that have pulled themselves up after devastating losses!!! I also need to ask for continued prayers for all involved. God is near us always. wwwbreedersworld.com
Please continue to keep our nation and our military in your continued prayers as well. Enjoy the spring weather that I’m sure is around the corner! Can’t wait for some fun farm pics! God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
