Well, Thanksgiving 2022 is in the books, and it was a beautiful day to be Thankful. I hope you all had a great day with family and friends. This year, our house was filled with kids and grandkids. By the time this Livestock Plus hits the mail, Christmas will be in the books; also hopefully, with all great memories. I’m guessing this would also be a good time to say Happy New Year. Three holidays in one greeting, things are moving too fast.
We had a great meal for Thanksgiving, maybe a little non-traditional, but it was with family, so all was good. When our illustrious and very truthful news media came out on television with the news of a turkey disease and shortage, we decided we would go ahead and buy a turkey early. We didn’t want to be left out of our usual tradition of turkey for Thanksgiving. So much for truth in news media, there were still turkeys in every store.
I bought some off brand turkey, that was the only thing this store had to offer. Now, talking as an ol’ cow man, I do believe this was a four-year-old poor doing tom turkey that had been pushed back the last three years. Not impressed! Thankfully Heidi scored a prime rib from Champion Show Feeds. I do believe it would have been born south of Creston on the high and dry road, possibly from Champion Steaks. Champion steaks was a life saver and meal saver. Not sure what that beef was as far as breed, but darn good. Preparation of that prime rib was done by our in-house master chef Matt Rohrig. Seasoned to a perfection, prepared to suit almost everyone, just a pinch rare for me, but it sure went down fast and easy. A fantastic piece of meat! On the side, add mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, bacon wrapped green beans, deviled eggs, meat and cheese platter along with chips and dip. Then enough dessert to feed fourteen families. We are so thankful for food and family in no certain order.
Christmas is fast approaching and I’m just guessing that it could be another five-pound gain day. Looking forward to kids and grandkids again. I’m thinking this year is rolling pretty fast when I have three holidays in one opening comment. All of us at LPI hope that you all have the greatest 2023. Happy New Year!!!
We are praying for those families that have lost loved ones in 2022, and for our law enforcement folks, the first responders, and our military and their families.
God Bless

COMMENTARY Hats Off
by Austin Sorensen
Wow, a new year already! How is that possible? First and foremost, I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years filled with friends and family! I always enjoy this time of year with all the new life as calves are being born.
On top of that, Yellowstone is back on TV which always gets me fired up about Sunday nights. Although there is a lot of parts of the show that are definitely not factual or correct, I really enjoy it because there are some parts that are so true. There was a little snippet in the first episodes of the new season where Beth Dutton is talking to Lainey Wilson’s character in that she states that she doesn’t date cowboys as they will always love something more; like the next horse, cow, farm, rodeo, etc. While I truly believe 99% of farmers/ ranchers would rank thier priorities such as faith, family, and then the farm/ranch, it did get me thinking. The more I thought about it, it occured to me how lucky we are in this business to enjoy something we do so much that we would fight for it like we would our faith or families.
This month my hat goes off to all of the cowboys from the true cowboys working stock on horseback every day to the athlete cowboys who provided 10 days of great entertainment at the National Finals Rodeo in Vegas in early December! As always, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of our team for your livestock marketing or purchasing needs.

Decision Making!
December and into the first part of January are when I feel like we all take time to make decisions that will affect the upcoming year. Should we sell? Should we buy? Should we trade equipment? What worked or what didn’t work? How are we sitting for taxes? How was our profit? Should we change anything? What seed should we use? Do we contract forward? Will we be able to get fertilizer? Should we modify our practices? Should I retire? So many questions! The number one question I keep getting asked is this, “Will the land market stay steady?”
Let’s look at the data behind the decision!
Positive factors driving farmland: Good yields, commodity prices, net farm income, equity in the existing land, and a great investment.
Negative factors driving farmland: Interest rates are still on the rise/unstable, 2023 input prices, margin compression, increased volume of farms offered to the market, drought, supply chain, and forging conflicts.
My Thoughts: I, have heard talk that interest rates will drop in the next 8 months. I have seen a slight dip in the medium quality ground and low-end ground. The high-end farmland that has a great yield potential is staying quite stable. I will say that there is volatility in the farmland depending on its location. The price of your farmland is based upon what the buyers are willing to give and as such; if your farmland is in a strong neighborhood, you have strong prices and conversely low prices in a weaker neighborhood. Overall, I am bullish and feel that the market is not going to back down. It has leveled off and I believe we will stay steady through planting season 2023. Then we may just see another increase.

Carcass Challenge steers delivered
On November 21, the Carcass Challenge steers were delivered to the Iowa State University Beef Nutrition farm north of Ames. We are extremely thankful for the generous donors, the Iowa Cattlemen’s Leadership Program class, and the volunteers who hauled steers to Ames.
We are excited for this group to be on feed as well as thankful for the opportunity to house the steers at Iowa State University.
In addition to this opportunity, thanks to the help of Elanco and the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab this year, we did a bacterial analysis on the health of the animals. Donors will receive these results in late December, letting them know if there is anything alarming with the calf to make aware of what is lingering on the farm.
The steers began the data collection period on December 5. Beginning weights and initial scan carcass data were taken thanks to Bonnie Larson with Critical Insights The next scan will be mid-test on February 15. Donors will receive that information by email and mail.
All updates and information about the steers throughout the program will be communicated through email, mail, the Iowa Cattleman magazine, and phone calls from our ICLP program participants. We are excited to have recruited more steers this year and look forward to keeping you updated throughout the program. We are excited to see the outcomes and results as a group.
If you have any questions or concerns through the upcoming months, please do not hesitate to reach out to Madyson Thill.

IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION
Member Services Team thankful for 2022 and looking forward to events in 2023
As we are in the thick of the holiday season we always need to take time to reflect on how 2022 went and look forward to the exciting things in store for 2023. In 2022 we added three new staff to the team and it has been exciting to see them hit the ground running. We now have all four regions of Iowa covered and look forward to continuing to help your local county boards and members.
We are also thankful for our members that continue to renew and support each other. We are stronger together and more powerful as one voice and you all continue to help us be at the forefront of topics and continue to push our leaders in Washington, D.C., and in Iowa to support our Iowa cattlemen.
As we look forward to 2023 we wanted to make sure we were getting to each region for an update and some educational opportunities.
In January, February, and March you will be able to take advantage of opportunities at our 2023 Cattle Forums to listen to an ICA and IBIC update, market outlook, and some different topics pertinent to each region of the state. Please take advantage of the dates, times, and locations listed below in the table to get your cattle industry update this winter. These events will be free to any paying member and will provide a meal and plenty of opportunities to learn and interact with ICA staff and speakers. Please watch your mailbox for a postcard reminder and rsvp as the dates approach in your area.
If you don’t get a chance to catch one of our Cattle Forums, please reach out to your Member Services Team and see if we can get a small producer meeting sched-

uled in your county. Also take advantage of the local Cattlemen’s banquets and auctions that might be happening in you area over the next few months.
For a list of these events please stop by our website, www.iacattlemen.org or visit our Facebook page to find out times and locations.
Thank you again for a successful 2022 and we look forward to talking with and seeing you at one of our events or out in the countryside in 2023. From our team to yours, have a blessed holiday season.

Renew Today! IOWA CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION YOUR FUTURE IS OUR MISSION.
With warmest condolences,
The cattle industry has lost one of the true great cowboys. Myron Benes knew the livestock industry and had a passion to find the next great one. To his family, our deepest sympathies. Rest in peace Myron.
~ Mike Sorensen
Myron Richard Benes was born on January 4, 1953, in Lincoln, NE to Ermin Cyril and Delores Marie (Potter) Benes. Myron attended school at Bishop Neumann in Wahoo, NE and graduated with the class of 1971. Before graduation
Myron enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1970 and was discharged in 1977. He farmed with his family in Valparaiso. Myron and his brother Melvin met a man by the name of Jim Wolf who they would show cattle for. He later encouraged Myron to move to Albion, NE to work for him.
On July 22, 1978, Myron was united in marriage to Karen Stevens at Sacred Heart Catholic in Lincoln, NE. The couple moved to Albion in 1978 where they began their life together, raising their two sons. Myron worked for the Wolf family and Wagonhammer Ranch. Myron’s specialty was in sales consulting with breeding programs. He was a member of many cattle organizations including BooneNance Cattlemen, Nebraska Cattlemen, American Angus Association, Simmental Association, Charolai Association, and Nebraska Elite Beef. In addition to his cattle, Myron enjoyed helping his boys and grandchildren with their show cattle, along with many other kids in 4-H and FFA.
Myron is a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Albion, NE. He is a member of the American Legion Post #371 in Valparaiso, NE.

Feeding for Hoof Health
An animal’s diet has a huge effect on hoof quality and overall hoof health. In particular, protein, fat, calcium, zinc, copper and selenium play very important roles. Supplementation of these key nutrients can help your livestock maintain or improve hoof health.
Late winter/early spring is usually a time of muddy sloppy conditions, which can spell trouble for hooves. From cracked hooves to foot rot, poor hoof health takes a toll on your livestock, no matter what the species. Wet, sloppy conditions just exacerbate hoof problems, softening them up, making them more susceptible to injury and microbial entry. The best way to combat poor hoof health is to grow a strong, hard hoof in the first place.
The Biology of a Hoof Hooves are primarily composed of protein…namely a special kind of protein called keratin. Keratin is composed of amino acids and forms twisted strands (much like a spring) that gives it extra strength and elasticity. Then those many strands twist together (just like a rope). Additionally, they link together by sulfur bonds between sulfur-containing amino acids in opposing keratin strands to give added strength.
The outermost layer contains fats and waxes in addition to the dead keratin. This layer of fats and waxes seals moisture in the hoof when the layer is intact. This layer also gives the hoof it’s shine and smoothness.
How Nutrition Impacts Hoof Health
The quality of the overall diet is often very evident in the appearance of hooves since they are so metabolically active. In general, a hoof will grow out and replace itself in roughly one year (quicker in very young animals!). Since hooves are composed of mainly of protein and fats, it is obvious that animals receive adequate levels of both of crude protein and fatty acids, particularly sulfur-containing amino acids for non-ruminants. But what you may not realize is that mineral nutrition also plays a vital role in hoof health. Calcium is required for activation of the enzyme needed to form keratin. It is also required for the process of creating crosslinks between keratin fibers. Zinc is very important for hoof growth and maintenance. It is an essential mineral in the formation of keratin. Zinc is also influences calcium usage by the body. Additionally, zinc plays a very important role in the formation of superoxide dismutase enzyme involved in antioxidant activity. Specifically, superoxide dismutase prevents the fats and oils in the hoof from oxidizing. When these fats oxidize it breaks the protective seal and causes the hoof to become dry and brittle. Copper is critical for the formation of crosslinks in the keratin that keep the hoof strong and hard. Copper is also a critical component of superoxide dismutase described above. Selenium plays an important antioxidant role in the

Dearest Heavenly Father,
You were there at the creation of the world and you will still be there at the end of all things, but we thank you today because you have promised to be with us through everything in between—both the joys and the sorrows.
As we begin a new year, we ask for your blessings on our country and on our lives. Help us to keep you at the center of all that we do as mothers, as fathers, as community members and as Americans. Show us how we can be a light to others in our jobs and help us share our faith with others in both word and deed. Give us the strength to turn away from our sins so that we might live the fully abundant lives you desire for us. Above all else, help us to resolve to put our faith in your Son Jesus alone. No matter what happens in the coming year, we trust that you will be there with us, but help us to realize that so that we can face everything with courage and hope. We pray all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Slow hoof growth
Soft hooves Cracks
Abscesses Laminitis Thin hoof wall Foot rot/Thrush
Feeding for Hoof Health
The specifics and amounts of what is necessary for optimum hoof health will vary from specie to specie. But in general, all the nutrients listed above are necessary. In general, crude protein and fats aren’t lacking in animals grazing ample amounts of green, growing pastures. Calcium deficiency is usually not an issue for most as well, especially in areas with hard water. However, zinc, copper and selenium are marginal to deficient in most soils across the United States. For this reason, most livestock respond well to supplementation of these three trace minerals (copper is the exception, as many breeds of sheep and Jersey dairy cattle are susceptible to copper toxicity).
Self-Fed Supplement Products
Independent research has shown time and time again that organic, chelated forms of trace minerals are more efficiently digested by the body and retained in tissues for later use. In summary, an animal’s diet has a huge effect on hoof quality and overall hoof health. In particular, protein, fat, calcium, zinc, copper and selenium play very important roles. Supplementation of these key nutrients can help your livestock maintain or improve hoof health. Please remember that the hoof grows relatively slowly, so it may take months to notice an improvement and can take a year or more to obtain full benefits.

Happy New Year and many blessings to everyone! 2022 was definitely a year to remember, many highs and lows including the loss of amazing, influential people in our industry and one that hits me on a daily basis, my Grandma Sorensen. I know, I was so lucky to have as much time as I had with her but I am greedy and want more time for my kids to know the most amazing grandma anyone could ask for! I constantly quote some of the things she would say and the kids think its funny. Little do they know it is my way of keeping her fresh in our minds. Wishing God’s strength and love for all who have lost loved ones.
Kids have been crazy busy and it feels like we meet ourselves coming and going daily. National FFA Convention was a great experience and Tucker came home with GOLD and finished in the Top 12 of the Employment Skills Contest. Football Playoffs were at the same time as FFA National Convention. Needless to say, it made for some interesting logistics for a few days! We are so very proud of Tucker’s love of FFA and his dedication to his teammates.
Tucker is lucky to have a grandfather (some of you know him as Mike Sorensen) that pushes him to learn aspects of the cattle industry that he is not familiar with or super comfortable explaining at times. So with a big push from Grandpa, and his mother, Tucker decided to try his hand at the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation 2022 Beef Scholarship Extravaganza with his friend, Carson Rieck. Beef Extravaganza is 10 stations of Credit/Finance, Seedstock Merchandising, Nutrition, Reproduction, Industry Issues, Marketing, Management, Health, Job Interview and Keep/Cull. Tuck and Carson said it is by far one of the most challenging events they have participated in to date! The boys were sponsored by the Union County Cattlemen and we are so immensely grateful for the opportunity! They finished middle of the pack and I cannot speak for Carson but I know they learned a lot from the experience and we will take that as a win! Next year boys!!! Big thank you to the Iowa Cattlemen’s Foundation and Mary Greiman for her guidance!! Also, we want to thank Casey Purdum for his financial guidance and Brett Henningsen for some nutrition direction.
Taylor is so excited to begin her AAU Volleyball season and with our school having a split season she will be starting basketball after Christmas as well. Taylor loves to come to Champion Show Feeds/Champion Steaks with mom to help out on busy days and it has pushed her out of her comfort zone and hopefully will expand her horizons in the future!
My shy middle T is coming out of her shell, check with me later to see if I’m ready to put her back in said shell.
Treva has been my cuddle bug lately! She loves to snuggle after supper and watch “Bluey” with mom. I stop everything I am doing and accommodate my little T since the older kids don’t have much time for mom anymore. I cherish these moments! It is funny Taylor likes to tease her and she tries to wiggle in the big chair with us and Treva is less than impressed to have to share. Sometimes we fall asleep together. Miss Treva finally had her sixth birthday at the end of November, so now she finally is able to tell people she is six without lying and teasing mom. She is doing awesome with speech and Tuck almost has her saying “T - Uck” now. For the longest time he was known as “Uck”.
Champion Steaks and Champion Show Feeds have been keeping me busy, along with LPI and chasing kids. Currently, Dave Rieck is sitting here trying to “encourage” me to finish this article. I think Dad must have gotten to Dave and encouraged him to be my dad at the feed store! It’s crazy how much they sound alike and especially when trying to keep me on task! At the end of the day, I know I’m pretty darn lucky!! Please keep our military and our nation in your prayers! Be safe and enjoy the NEW YEAR!!!!
God Bless, Heidi Sorensen Rohrig 661-900-6004 heidi@livestockplusinc.com
